Coach’s Thoughts: • We have some experience there with Brooke Bourbonais. She got a lot of playing time her freshman season. • We have two freshmen coming in, and they are young but they have a lot of experience and have played in some high level games. • We are hoping they are able to challenge each other, and with the way it is going in drills, it will be a dog fight. • Brooke has a lot of experience, and is very strong with quick reactions. • Alex Latham has played at a very high level. Her team played for a national championship, and has had some great coaches. I think she will be a young player coming in with a lot of experience. • Cadence Starr has an unbelievable work rate, and is one of the ‘blue collar’ type of people. She has had a lot of success with that.

Coach’s Thoughts: • One thing that is very good is getting Yanci Johnson back. She is very determined and has a big work rate. She has scored a lot of goals in the program, and we are excited to have her and the experience back. • Brooke Eastburg is someone who made some noise and did some good things last year. She has really come in focused, and that is something we are excited about in her. • Both Esdenia Gonzalez and Caché Haley have a lot of speed and are dynamic. • Payton Roney and those two (Haley and Esdenia) should give us speed and help us spread other teams out and expose them a little more.

Coach’s Thoughts: • Cassandra Briscoe got a lot of playing experience this summer in Canada, and has come in determined and focused. She is a great threat in the attacking part of it, and I think that is where she will be most dangerous for us. • Nikki Saunders continues to get better and better every year. We expect a big senior year from her. • Defensively in the middle we have Chelsea Schaefer and Shelby Balmer. Both are very strong in the air and very physical. Both are willing to pay the physical price. • Julia Ranalli is one of our more versatile players. • Camila Ardila has some very positive moments towards the end of last year, and had a tremendous spring. We are hoping she will add on to that.

Coach’s Thoughts: • ‘The Minister of Defense,’ if you will, is Jackie Strug. She takes a lot of responsibility on the back line, and that will be a good thing. • Peyton Rector is someone who has been a defender for us in the past. She wants to go out as a senior with high hopes, and she has shown a lot of promise. • We lost a lot of upper classmen, but we feel like we have some talented players to feel those shoes.

MARSHA HARPER

Assistant Coach

First season at NSU South Florida, 2012 Head coach George Van Linder looked for a former player who was both a leader on COACHING EXPERIENCE and off the field during their career, and he found that in Marsha Harper. Year School Position Record Harper was named as the team’s assistant coach at the start of preseason camp 2014 Northwestern State Assistant Coach - before the 2014 season, and immediately went to work. “We are excited to have Marsha as part of our staff. She came to us highly recommended from the South Florida staff. After speaking with her, we realized she was exactly what we needed to help our program continue to grow,” said Van Linder. The Denver, Colo., native was a student-athlete at the University of Florida before she transferred to South Florida in 2011 to finish her soccer career and earn her degree. While at USF, she was named as the team’s captain from 2011-13, and also served as a member of the Bulls’ student-athlete advisory committee. Listed as a forward and defender, Harper tallied two goals and four assists in 47 games with South Florida. Harper was able to earn both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees as a studentathlete in Tampa, Fla. She earned her bachelor’s in applied science and her master’s in exercise science. “To have a coach who as a player has been to three NCAA tournaments is impressive,” said Van Linder. “The fact that she has her master’s degree in exercise science and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national diploma is also a testament to her work to become a strong coach.” When Harper was at Florida, she earned the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award and the Southeastern Conference Community Service Award. She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll from 2008-10. After her playing career was over, she volunteered as an assistant coach in the spring and assisted with phases of the USF program with a focus on fundraising. During the spring, she also served as a staff coach for the Future 50 Soccer Camp where she helped coach girls in their development and tactical soccer skills. In the summer following, she helped the FC Tampa Rangers Soccer Club as the developmental director for the U13 club and an assistant coach for the U14 and U9 clubs. Harper also has two stints in personal training. The first was in the summer of 2011 when she was a personal training intern at Fitness Solutions Tampa and the second in the summer of 2013 as a strength and conditioning intern at USF. As an intern with the Bulls, she worked with football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, track, cross country and volleyball.

• Falling just short of the Southland Conference Championships, the Northwestern State soccer team put together a season it hasn’t seen in a while. The team won five games in league play for the first time since 2005. • Heading into the final game of the year, the Lady Demons needed a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and losses from Central Arkansas and Nicholls to make it to a league tournament for the first time since 2008. After shutting out the Islanders 3-0, still could not get after both the Sugar Bears and Colonels won. • After Yanci Johnson went down with a knee injury in the second game of the season, the Lady Demons had to look for both young and veteran players to step in. • Freshman Brooke Eastburg along with senior Ashlee Savona led the Lady Demons in scoring with four goals apiece, and junior Nikki Saunders was the leader in assists. • The outset of the season was a tough one, after NSU lost the first four games of the season to teams (two were teams from the Big XII and SEC), NSU took down Jackson State. Its next win was against Prairie View A&M, after a loss to ULM. • The Lady Demons opened the season against reigning league champions, Stephen F. Austin before a draw with Lamar on a rainy, messy night. After a loss to Central Arkansas, NSU won three of its next four against Sam Houston State, McNeese State and Nicholls. • Eventual NCAA participant Southeastern Louisiana opened a three-game losing streak by NSU before the season finale win over the Islanders.

Greg Burke

Director of Athletics The Burke File

AGE: 57 (Born Oct. 22, 1956) • HOMETOWN: Alliance, Ohio • HIGH SCHOOL: Marlington ’74 • COLLEGE: Mt. Union ’78 (cum laude) POSTGRADUATE: Kent State ’86 • BEFORE HE WAS A.D.: Sports writer, Alliance (Ohio) Review, 1972-78; director of news and sports information, Hiram (Ohio) College (1978-85); administrative intern, NSU athletics, 1985-86; director, NSU Athletic Association, 1986-92; director of athletic development, University of Akron, 1992-96. BIG FAN OF: Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers • INTERESTS: Working out, watching ESPN and VH1 Classic, family outings.

Beginning his 19th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted hometown. Burke has been athletics director at Northwestern since Aug. 29, 1996, when his first day included speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon. Burke is the longest serving AD at any Louisiana or Southland Conference institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school’s NCAA Division I sports. Last February, he was presented the “Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Football Award” by the north Louisiana chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. Two years ago, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Burke was the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. He has begun a term on the NCAA Division I Committee on Academic Performance; Burke previously served on the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the national playoffs. Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country’s premiere advocates of FCS football. Burke’s 17 years as athletic director include 37 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 61 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Twenty NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. All of the school’s athletic facilities have undergone nearly $7 million in improvements in the past four years. Burke spearheaded a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues; the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues; and a $500,000 softball grandstand project completed earlier this year. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league’s five decades of history to sweep football, men’s basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It’s been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke’s management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches. In just their second seasons, women’s basketball co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr guided NSU to the NCAA Tournament while baseball coach Lane Burroughs executed the best one-season turnaround in Southland Conference history and tied NSU’s school record. Anchors of the NSU department include current gead coaches Mike McConathy, Louisiana’s all-time career basketball wins leader; 2013 Louisiana softball coach of the Year Donald Pickett; Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman, who just led the volleyball program to its best two seasons in the 31-year history of the program; and Patric DuBois, whose Lady Demon tennis program has two Southland Conference titles in the past four years. Several other Burke hires had great success at Northwestern State that propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women’s athletics under his guidance. Along with the aforementioned volleyball surge, NSU’s soccer program was the first in Louisiana to reach the NCAA Tournament. Softball and tennis made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013, the second in four seasons for Lady Demon tennis, and softball returned in 2014. Burke has established a high standard for NSU Athletics in academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA’s APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10 and has remained at that level. Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation’s Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper’s editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart Association and was 2010 March of Dimes chairman locally. His wife, Susu, is a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and an elementary teacher. Their 20-year-old daughter, Catherine, graduated from St. Mary’s High School in May of 2012 and attends Louisiana Tech. Burke with his wife Susu and daughter Catherine

Jody BISCOE

Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is the coordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and Substance Abuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in that its student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard about higher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties. NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by following the Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Future. This past year, NSU was one of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for low NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’s indoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference. Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who graduated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cum laude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. These accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration. Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center at NSU. He has served on the National Addiction Technology Transfer Center’s (ATTC) - Practice and National Leadership Institute Committee. In addition, he has coordinated five nationally recognized leadership institutes for Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico and a member of the National ATTC Leadership Directors Committee. Recently, he was appointed to the NAADAC - National Addiction Studies & Standards Collaborative Committee.
