Welcomes you Show Low is the commercial and tourism hub of the White Mountains of Arizona. Our rural progressive community was established in 1870 and incorporated in 1953. It is located at an elevation of 6,400 feet in the midst of the largest forest of Ponderosa Pine trees in the United States. And it all began with a card game. Marion Clark and Corydon E. Cooley, a famous Indian Scout, were partners and homesteaded their land in 1870, fencing off some 100,000 acres with barbed wire. Part of their ranch is the present town site of Show Low. Some years later, the two partners had a disagreement and decided to dissolve the partnership with a game of cards called “Seven Up.” The winner would buy out the loser. As the story goes, the partners played all night. On the last hand Cooley needed just one point to win. At that moment, Clark is reported to have said, “You ‘Show Low’ and you win!” Cooley cut the deck and came up with the Deuce of Clubs, thus winning the game and the land, and providing the name for the future town of Show Low. Today, the main street is called Deuce of Clubs.

Show Low is the most populated community in Navajo County with 12,400 year-round residents. Yet it attracts thousands of visitors and seasonal residents. All enjoy our moderate four seasons, beautiful outdoors, abundant water supply, nearby forest lakes and streams and a community full of friendly people.
Show Low offers panoramic views, good fishing in mountain lakes and streams, and miles of wilderness for hiking, camping, cycling, horseback riding and downhill and crosscountry skiing. It also features unique shops, a newly-constructed library, and fine, as well as casual, dining at many restaurants.

Cultural and entertainment events are various and numerous, including local farmers’ markets, mountain bike races, performances by White Mountain Symphony Orchestra and White Mountain Chorale, arts & crafts exhibits, fashion shows, community picnics, Forest Service presentations, bake shows, art shows, rodeos, gem and mineral expositions, car shows, community 6
dances, parades and concerts. Show Low also features eight parks. Amenities within the parks include a mile-long walking path, dog park, a BMX track, skateboard park, Frisbee golf, softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and an indoor family aquatic center. Imagine camping among tall pine trees beside a quiet Alpine lake watching osprey swoop down and catch fish. Year-round recreational opportunities make the Show Low area a true “vacation destination”. The area is famous for world-class hunting and fishing. Show Low sits within a 2,000,000-acre National Forest playground. These forests produced the current worldrecord typical elk. There are over 50 lakes and streams in the area that have produced the current state-record fish for six different species. In fact, the state record 16 pound walleye was caught within Show Low’s city limits at Show Low Lake. Show Low also boasts over 180 miles of trails in the vicinity for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The White Mountain Trail System is among the best in the Southwest. FOOL HOLLOW LAKE PARK Year-round camping, fishing, picnicking, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities make Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area a popular place for residents and visitors. Operated by the Arizona State Parks, located on the City’s northern border, this Recreation Area was created by a private/public partnership in 1988 between the City of Show Low, U.S. Forest Service, Arizona Game and Fish and 10
Arizona State Parks and private entities. This 800-acre recreation area surrounding a 150-acre lake includes 92 recreational vehicle/camper hook ups, 31 developed tent sites, five shower buildings with rest room facilities, two handicapped fishing piers and a contact station. In addition, a fully functional sanitary dump station (seasonal), a fish cleaning station, and 4 fishing docks are available. Other amenities include a program area, picnic

SHOW LOW LAKE PARK Located on the southern boundary of the City is Show Low Lake, operated by Recreation Resource Management under contract with the City of Show Low. Show Low
Lake is located adjacent to Show Low Lake Road about 1 mile from Hwy 260. This 100 acre lake sits at an elevation of 6,500 feet. Adjacent to the lake is Show Low Lake Campground, offering 75 campsites, some with electric sites. Also available are a dump station, shower facility, and small convenient seasonal store which offers boat rental, fishing licenses, bait, tackle, drinks and snacks. The campground also offers a playground, day-use ramadas and

WOODLAND LAKE PARK Woodland Lake is a small lake but has been called the “Crown Jewel.” It is convenient to both residents and vacationers to the Show Low/Pinetop Lakeside area. It sits at an elevation of 6,892 feet which makes for ideal temperatures during early spring, summer and early fall. The lake is part of Woodland Park which closes at 8:00 PM daily. The lake’s water surface is 18 acres with a maximum depth of 20 feet. Since it is part of the local irrigation district, it is sometimes drawn down to 10 acres of water surface. SHOW LOW HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM The Show Low Historical Society, a city funded agency and non-profit entity, was founded in 1995 and holds archaeological, cultural, and historical materials related to the White Mountains of Arizona. In the heart of the museum is a 1912-2012 exhibit designed by Carol Grossheim, Assistant Director. The theme is “Show Low Past, Present and Future.” In June of 2002, Show Low experienced the worst scare in its history. The Rodeo Chediski Fire began to bear down on our community. The museum honors this event and the men and women who worked tirelessly to save our town. Everyone loves the jail cell. Because the building was formally used as a police department headquarters, it housed a holding cell. Hiking throughout The White Mountains is a year-round experience. From the rugged terrain of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to the White Mountains Trail System, there are trails for all levels and ages. The White Mountains Trail System consists of 200+ miles of trails. It is a series of 25 to 30 interconnecting, multi-use trail loops. Most trails are also inhabited by watchable wildlife, including elk, bear, mountain lion, antelope, deer, javelina, turkey and quail, as well as rabbit. FISHING With more than 50 Lakes and Streams many species of fish inhabit the waters, but trout are the big draw. From brook, rainbow, brown, and cutthroat, our lakes are also home to bass, walleye, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and northern pike.

HUNTING The White Mountains are known for their abundant stock of wildlife. In accordance with Arizona Department of Game and Wildlife, game hunts are planned and monitored throughout the year. The primary game stock is elk and the area has become legendary for world-class hunting. Bear, mountain lion, antelope, deer, javelina, turkey, quail, rabbit and waterfowl are also found in this area. The White Mountains offer virtual year-round hunting experiences.
BIKING One of the fastest growing recreation activities is mountain biking in the White Mountains. The region is primarily forest, with some high desert elevations. Throughout the White Mountains Trail System, as well Show Low Area Guide & Directory 13
as the miles of Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Service roads, mountain bike enthusiasts can travel for great distances without interference from motorized vehicles. It has been estimated that within the Trail System and connecting trails, a bike rider can travel for more than 120 miles without interruption. MEDICAL SERVICES
Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center A major medical center and numerous privately-owned healthcare clinics and professional medical offices form our “medical district” on the south side of the City. An urgent care and rehabilitation clinic on the Deuce of Clubs and several managed-care facilities are components of Show Low’s health services industry. Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center is a notfor-profit healthcare facility that is community-owned and governed by a seven-person board. It is the only public fullservice hospital in Navajo and Apache Counties. Summit Healthcare is one of the first rural hospitals to be certified within the Arizona Perinatal Regional System and was the first hospital in Arizona to have a designated Level IV Trauma Center. A five-story expansion was dedicated to provide for an ICU and Medical/Surgical unit on the first floor, a Medical/Surgical unit on the second floor and an obstetrical and women’s Happy Patient health unit on the third floor. The unit houses an observation nursery and 20 private rooms for couplet care. The fourth and fifth floor will be shelled in as we anticipate further expansion as our population grows. In addition to the Summit Healthcare facility, a number of assisted living facilities, Solterra Senior Living, The Carriage House, and Bannon Springs Ranch are located in and around Show Low as well as a Community Counseling Center, and the White Mountain Hospice Foundation.
