Incidentally, a reciprocal exhibition of eminent American artworks from several of our major museums recently went off to circulate in Korea in order to introduce audiences there to American art and culture. It is interesting to observe that the selections on display in the overall exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art illuminate dynamics of Korean cultural ideals that came into being during the lifespan of an especially long ruling dynasty. Reflections on proposed new Comcast tower The announcement in January that Comcast was planning to build a second office building, costing $1.2 billion, came with pronouncements that tower employees would add 1,600 jobs to the city economy. These would be added to the thousands currently working here for the company. More impressively, the new tower would be the largest building in the United States, other than in New York
or Chicago, when it is completed. Norman Foster, of the United Kingdom, one of the most renowned world-class architects, is the building designer. The tower, which will stand between 18th and 19th on Arch Street, will have about 1.5 million square feet of rentable space. In many ways, this seems to be a good thing. The new 1,121-foot-tall building would be located on a block
between the AT&T building, the first Comcast tower, which is only six years old, the Robert Morris building and the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, a wall of medium and highrise buildings. plan and the way it would affect the surrounding area that made me feel uncomfortable, so I decided to ask one of my favorite professors of architecture, John Pron, who recently retired as a professor of architecture from the department of architecture at the Temple University’s Tyler School of Design. I took a walk near the site of the planned building on Arch Street from 17th to 20th last month, with Pron, who said, “Quite a marvelous, dramatic, exciting addition to center city, but [there are] other issues.”
The first problem is the relationship to the surrounding community, he said. “The present Comcast building generously opens to the south, to sunlight, to a broad view of the rest of Center City, to a public plaza and café on JFK Boulevard, but it is relentlessly insensitive to directions north and northeast — to Arch Street, toward Logan Circle and to the fine intact diverse residential community filling the space between the museums of the Parkway and the office towers of JFK and Market Street.” So, Pron continued, “I’m disappointed in the

sidewalk-level design of Comcast One both in terms of a dearth of pedestrian activities as well as a lack in architectural scale. “If Comcast Two continues that, it will further the setting up of a new, taller ‘Chinese Wall’ [replacing the old Chinese Wall of the railroad line that existed there until the 1950s]. I would wish for some design gestures that invite pedestrians — residents, museum goers, tourists from out of town to feel more invited to move north/south — to live, shop, eat, visit the institutions, and so on. Now, it seems that the glassy wall of Arch Street will continue
marching westward.” Pron said it is not true that the new building would not affect other buildings in the area, ones that are not necessarily located on Arch Street. He said he sees four distinct zones in the area: the Parkway, the residential district, the wall of office towers along JFK and Market streets that stretch [from] City Hall towards 30th Street Station and the river, and the commercial and restaurant area of Chestnut, Walnut, Locust and Spruce that focuses on Rittenhouse Square. “The problem is, they are really four east/west strips,” Pron said. “They don’t easily connect north/south
… and so the Comcast Two is, it seems, increasing that barrier.” Further discussing the design of the new building, Pron said, “I think the reflective glass is handsome, and I do appreciate how it can double the image of the old neo-Gothic Victorian and Beaux Arts buildings on Arch that are made of styles and materials no longer available for modern construction, but Comcast on Arch is barren, totally in shadow and scaleless.” Pron said the main problem is “a second Comcast building that continues the wall-like design will significantly weaken the transition
between high and low, office and residential areas.” He said, “There are two buildings in the city that do a good job of responding to both scales — the 1929 PSFS Building (now the hotel), where the ground-level corner of 12th and Market is detailed for shops (and so the bank space was upstairs) and the Mitchell and Giurgola design for the Penn Mutual Building behind Independence Hall, which maintains the older, userfriendly scale of Chestnut Street (with the restoration of the John Haviland façade of the 1820s) as a screen, while the larger glass office tower rises up above.”

ExhibitionsInSight CULTURe, from PAGE 16 attitudes, socially and aesthetically. At the same time, the exhibition reflects on several external influences that affected significant Korean practices. For example, there was the adoption of Chinese writing several centuries before the arrival of the Current Era. Furthermore, the underlying philosophy of the Joesan outlook on life dates from the adoption of the Buddhist faith and the study of Confucianism. Even later, the introduction of ideas from Western Civilization took place in the late 19th century. Typically, a white porcelain vessel in the show, from the 18th century, standing some 16 inches high and called a Moon Jar, is a decidedly elegant vase.
Presenting an impressively bold sense of dignity, the piece gives considerable expression to an impeccable sense of inspired artisanship and eloquent poetry. Also from the 18th century, the exhibition offers an extremely forceful portrait of the monarch Yi Jae in the form of a hanging scroll rendered in ink on silk. He comes across as an exceptionally authoritative figure wearing a black hat and a highly contrasting white robe. His likeness has been treated in the characteristically crisp fashion you wouldn’t be surprised to see as the “man of the year” pictured on a Time magazine cover. Because he projects such a commanding presence, it is obvious he never ran for public office by appealing for votes to a democratic electorate. Instead, you can’t help but understand that he inherited his title and ran the country by

virtue of an entirely different political system from our own. In no uncertain terms, the picture tells us, during his lifetime, he was perceived as an exalted leader who exerted his will by virtue of an ironbound sense of control that brooked no nonsense from anyone or anywhere. As a matter of fact, the picture lets you know, if he chose to do so, he could probably look right through you without batting an eyelash. Furthermore, you can’t help but feel that the presences of both a soundly prepared intelligence and an unimpeachable integrity have been decisively invested in the royal character. Exhibitions like this one don’t come along all that often. It would be a shame to miss what it has to offer while it’s so close at hand.

This ‘reaching out and exchanging’ is in keeping with the founding members : when founded in 1939 in Philadelphia, the typical print was a black and white etching. A color print had little chance of passing a jury. The first National Color Print Exhibition, staged by the 85 members of the Society was at the Philadelphia Print Club, now the Print Center. Mark works with many themes, from landscape to still life to abstract figurative work. All of his themes will be represented in the show. Prominent among the images in the show are his animal paintings and images of circus performers and musicians.
