Be a lighthouse. Be yourself.

Come straight to the point – with your message. Unadulterated, clear and without double meanings. Make sure that nothing interferes with your credibility, especially not a message that isn’t suitable. Surprise – above all, yourself. Be as authentic as is humanly possible. And keep in mind: When all are loud, the quieter voice is heard the loudest.

What do you really need? A firm standpoint, nothing is more important. Because it’s not the lighthouse that’s in motion, but the sea. In the heat of general disarray, only directness leads straight to the goal. Good design is important. It is modest, honest, functional and never boring. And, even after several years, convincing and fresh.

Bring sie auf den Punkt, deine Botschaft. Unverfälscht, klar und ohne doppelten Boden. Sorge dafür, dass nichts ihre Glaubwürdigkeit stört, schon gar nicht ein Bote, der nicht zu ihr passt. Überrasche – am besten dich selbst. Sei so authentisch wie es eben nur geht. Und bedenke: Wo alle laut werden, ist es der Leise, der auffällt.

Was brauchst du wirklich? Einen festen Standpunkt, nichts ist wichtiger. Denn nicht der Leuchtturm bewegt sich, es ist das Meer. Im allgemeinen Durcheinander führt nur Gradlinigkeit ans Ziel. Gutes Design ist wichtig. Es ist unaufdringlich, ehrlich und funktional. Und vor allem nie langweilig und noch nach Jahren frisch und überzeugend.

Avoid routines.

Originals always have a history behind them. Like the Swiss army knife or Scotch whiskey. Ours? In the early 1980s we thought: plastic and good design for writing instruments, they belong together. That was courageous, since no one had ever tried it before. And since they were writing instruments, we needed good refills. For us, that was a matter of course, but in combination it was even more daring: design + plastic + writing technology. And then introducing the whole thing onto the promotional products market – which was actually almost outrageous. Originale haben immer eine Geschichte. Wie Schweizer Messer oder schottischer Whiskey. Unsere? Wir haben Anfang der 80er Jahre gesagt: Kunststoff und Design bei Schreibgeräten, das geht zusammen. Das war mutig, weil das niemand bisher versucht hatte. Und weil es Schreibgeräte waren, brauchten sie gute Minen. Für uns verstand sich das von selbst, aber in der Kombination war das noch mutiger: Design + Kunststoff + Schreibtechnik. Und alles dann auf den Promotionsmarkt zu bringen, das war dann eigentlich fast schon fast unverschämt.

That’s right, in all of these three things we express what we’re all about: For the mountains, endurance and tranquillity are required; for chocolate, in addition to artisanship, good taste. And for watches? Precision and passion for detail. All of which basically comes very close to describing what makes us Swiss what we are. And all of this is also in each and every pen we make: A pure bit of Switzerland. Was verbindest du mit der Schweiz? Berge, Schokolade, Uhren? Stimmt, in all diesen drei Dingen zeigen wir, was in uns steckt: Für die Berge braucht es Ausdauer und Ruhe, für die Schokolade neben Handwerk auch guten Geschmack. Und für die Uhren? Präzision und eine grosse Liebe zum Detail. Damit wären wir dem, was uns Schweizer ausmacht, schon ziemlich nahe gekommen. Und das alles steckt auch in unseren Schreibgeräten: Ein pures Stück Schweiz.

Schwingen or Hoselupf, also known as Swiss wrestling, is a type of folk wrestling native to Switzerland, especially popular in German-speaking Switzerland. Schwingen oder Hoselupf ist eine in der Schweiz beliebte Variante des Ringens. Es gilt, noch vor dem Hornussen und dem Steinstossen, als vor allem in der Deutschschweiz verbreiteter Nationalsport.

You know the story about the butterfly in the Amazon that batted its wings and caused a tornado in south Denmark? It’s a similar thing with writing systems: complex and highly sensitive systems with an unbelievably long list of chemical and physical variables. It takes only the slightest change to throw everything off balance. To prevent this happening, a high degree of expertise, experience, knowledge and technology is required. Something our company can claim for 50 years now: our defence against fluttering butterflies when you write (except for those in your stomach).

Why in fact is one product preferred over another? Maybe because it’s noticeable whether the people behind that particular product truly stand behind it. Somehow, things have a way of letting us sense whether they contain blood, sweat and tears – or merely office work. We’ll leave this litmus test up to you. And of course your customers. Warum mag man eigentlich ein Produkt mehr und ein anderes weniger? Vielleicht weil man merkt, ob die Menschen, die hinter ihm stehen, es selbst mögen. Irgendwie lassen uns die Dinge einfach spüren, ob Herzblut in ihnen steckt oder nur Buchhaltung. Diesen Lackmus-Test überlassen wir jetzt euch. Und natürlich euren Kunden.

Du kennst die Geschichte von dem Schmetterling im Amazonas, der einen Tornado in südlichen Dänemark auslöst? So ähnlich ist das auch mit Schreibsystemen: komplexe und hoch empfindliche Systeme mit einer unglaublich langen Liste von chemischen und physikalischen Variablen. Die kleinste Veränderung genügt und schon ist alles aus dem Gleichgewicht. Damit das nicht passiert, braucht es viel Kompetenz, Erfahrung, Wissen und Technik. Seit 50 Jahren haben wir die im Haus: unsere Abwehr gegen flügelschlagende Schmetterlinge wenn ihr schreibt (ausser natürlich im Bauch). 30
