A Little About IDoWED I never thought I would be an editor of a magazine let alone two magazines. I am a lover of bridal fashion, good food and I love cheese. I am very passionate and have fallen in love with each of my event professionals. It has been quite a ride this last year. I am so thankful for those who have laughed, learned, and dreamed with me. Brandi Reiland from Soiree, you have a heart of gold and gold goes with everything! Heidi Wight, your integrity reaches to the heavens. Cat Hallock, you need to eat! Thank you my friends for dreaming alongside me. Ian and Sarah Williams, creating and producing this magazine locally here in McCall brings me so much joy. I appreciate you both more than I could ever express. Frannie, you are crazy and ridiculously perfect. I have enjoyed you so much! Eddie Dunn, “The Wizard of OZ!” You are the man behind the curtain. Cheryl Meinzer, you bought a piece of heaven and I am so thankful you share it with me and have become my friend. Tana Photography, Two Bird Studio and Ampersand Studios; you three are a dream. Thank you for always going above and beyond for this project. Lindsay Yeaman from Bliss, my dear friend, you are continually a lifesaver. Laura Bettis, (Clyde and Alice), I cannot begin to express my gratitude to you. From baking cakes, to fixing my spelling errors, to just listening. I have faced many challenges and emotional struggles this year. My friends who have been my rocks—I am forever thankful to you— Alycia Reuter, Shannon Berg, and Rachel Diaz. THANK YOU! You are beautiful! To my parents: I LOVE YOU! Special thanks to Shelley Davis and the staff at Barker, Rosholt & Simpson. We hope this magazine helps you find the best resources and ideas for your event. Here’s to your “I Do” and all the happiness to follow.

Love, Sherry

mcWED came together as a company in February 2014. We published our first wedding and event directory in June of that same year. It has been a blessed year. In June, I dedicated the first issue of mcWED to two precious little souls that impacted our lives. To Gabriel and Eyrran for always reminding me to live, laugh, and love. Little did we know in the hustle and bustle of creating our first magazine that we would be where we are today. On June 18, 2014, the day mcWED launched, Gabriel left his short life here on earth. The months that followed we learned about persevering and overcoming. In November, just as I was preparing for the next issue, Eyrran joined Gabriel. It is with bittersweet thoughts that we dedicate this magazine to these two beautiful angels. LIVE, LAUGH, and LOVE!

Not your parents’ wedding video: the wedding film industry has changed BY JASON & EB BELTS-KAUFFMAN TWO BIRD STUDIO

T

here’s no denying the importance of pausing the special moments of your wedding day through the magic of still photography. Often the moment continues on and you want to revisit the sequence of events that add up to one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

possibilities for capturing a bride and groom’s special day in motion were thrown wide open. In the hands of skilled cinematographers, those tired out camcorder home movies have been replaced by a motion picture experience that truly captures the intensity and drama of the day.

The past six years have seen far-reaching changes in the wedding film industry. With the advent of high-definition video features on handheld DSLR cameras in 2008, the cinematic

So what should you consider when you’re in the market for a wedding film?

film style

When auditioning prospective videographers, make sure their styles match your desires. Are you more interested in a classic storytelling approach that simply documents your day from beginning to end? Or do you desire a more artistically edited feature film? Set aside a date with your fiancé to watch wedding films produced by your list of potential videographers.

coordination

It’s important to communicate the meaningful aspects of your day that you’d like to see captured in your wedding film. Ask your videographer what they need from you to ensure they don’t miss significant moments and details. And finally, make sure to schedule a call with your videographer to talk about day-of schedule, video team needs and anything else that will affect your day.

camera crew

We suggest either hiring the same company for both video and stills or hiring a photographer and videographer who have worked together in the past. Not only does it ensure your photo and video have a similar look and feel, but it also ensures the crew knows each other’s shooting styles. If you do hire separately, ask the two companies how they plan to work and coordinate with each other so they’re not competing for shots and creating a tense atmosphere.

sound of your day

It’s easy to forget that a wedding film is not simply about the gorgeous footage. Also important are the sounds of your big day. Make sure your videographer is prepared to capture professional quality audio from your ceremony, the speeches at the reception and anything else you’ll want to relive in the years to come.

song licensing

You should insist on hiring a professional videographer who only uses licensed music in their wedding films. Most likely you’re going to want to share your film online—doing so with unlicensed music is risky business.

why a wedding film?

Wedding films preserve the motion and sound of your wedding day just as it occurred, in its entirety. When you watch your professionally produced video, you’ll be able to relive your walk down the aisle and your first kiss, listen to all of the emotion and tenderness of your vows and the toasts of loved ones, and recall the motion and energy of your first dance. All of this will be preserved for you and your family for years to come. It may even become a family heirloom.

THE GROOM CAVE BY EDDIE DUNN

SENIOR EDITOR

October 4, 2013 changed my life.

your fiancée about ALL the details:

Simply put, it was the second best day of my life. She said, “Yes!” Let the planning begin. Right away, mind you.

Just go with it, dude. Seriously, whatever YOU have planned in your simple, “guy brain,” it’s going to be different than what your soon-to-be wife’s plan will be. And that’s completely okay. That’s the joy of it—it’ll be okay. In the end, “Yes, Dear” goes REALLY far, and having a compromising attitude from the beginning will help you more than you’ll ever imagine. I know it may be tough at first, but all you need to do is have FUN with it.

I hadn’t been engaged before, so this entire process was new to me. And boy, was it an awakening! So many things to do in so little time. And by “little time,” I mean nine months. I mean, gosh, you have the same amount of time to plan for a baby so you can plan a wedding in nine months, right? The easy part was over—getting her to say yes, now came the hard part of putting it all together. Before I go into my unbridled, enthusiastic parable about planning our wedding from my very own blue eyes, I’d like to offer the men out there a little bit of helpful, sophomoric advice when speaking with

14

I honestly cannot remember, for the life of me, what my fiancée and I talked about first. After I finally calmed down about the fact that I would be getting married soon, my mushy brain started to settle down, and I was able to make lucid decisions, once again. Colors! That’s right, it was colors. My favorite color is blue, so I was certain

we’d have it in the mix. We had figured out we’d keep it somewhat simple and just choose three colors. Blue, peach, and white. Navy blue, peach, and white. Okay, let’s try baby blue, peach, and white. Are you sensing a theme here? My point is that we didn’t know what the heck we really wanted. Final color scheme picked: gray, peach, white, and burlap. Wait, what? No blue?! Oh well. I’m a dude and got over it in about 4.5 seconds. That took about a month to figure out. A month, just for colors! After that, I finally started to understand what my life was going to be like for the next eight months. See, when you “plan” for a wedding there really isn’t, well, a plan! Imagine that. You just kind of do stuff. A lot of stuff. And it changes. All the time.

After we settled on colors, it was time to go shopping for stuff that was cool and matched our color scheme. My fiancée, Caroline, is a big fan of vintage items. That meant every Saturday we had available on our schedules was spent rummaging vintage stores throughout Boise. I was kind of a grump about it at first, but then I fell in love with looking at old, dilapidated stuff that I’d never own but kinda wanted. We struck out at finding unique treasures the first few stores, but then we discovered all the knick-knacks we were desperately searching for. Oh, and during those relentless searches for stuff we’d use one day and probably throw away the day after the wedding, you must know that we bought more stuff than we needed. If you remember what I said before about our “plan,” then you can imagine what these Saturdays were like. Laugh amongst yourselves. The next few months, honestly, were a blur. Vintage shopping, wedding cake shopping, suit shopping, find the perfect tie color shopping. Shop, shop, shop. For me, I enjoy shopping as much as the next guy but wedding shopping has its own level, man. Yes, there is a skill to wedding shopping. Get engaged and you’ll see. Springtime finally arrived and it’s truly game on. Caroline was cracking down on our checklist and reminded me daily what we had not accomplished. Oh, August 9th, our wedding date, you cannot come soon enough. And speaking of August 9th … A funny thing happened while planning our wedding date. You’d think that would be the easiest thing to do, right? Pick a day and you’re good. Well, our friends Dustin and Kameron became engaged a couple of months prior to us. However, they had yet to announce the date of their wedding. Caroline and I had already picked our date—July, 19th, 2014 and promptly sent out the obligatory Facebook announcement. Exactly two minutes later I receive a text from my friend Dustin that reads verbatim: “Tell me you guys aren’t getting married on July, 19?!?” I laughed hysterically and knew what had just happened. Yep, we had just picked the same date as our friends did! All went smoothly after my beautiful fiancée spent a frantic 30 minutes making the necessary notifications to our friends and family that our new date of August 9, 2014 had been solidified. As early summer approached, the plan, was coming into place. Caroline’s bridesmaids had all their dresses in hand and fit to perfection. Her dress was almost done, and she’s looking like an A student. As for me and my dudes? Not so much. TWO of my groomsmen lived out of state which meant me having to purchase and then mail their suits to them so they could get them tailored—if needed—on time for the wedding. July soon made its way onto the calendar and Caroline ventured off to her bridal shower in San Diego.

but it wasn’t the right shade. Ironically enough, we finally found some shoes online while we were in the store and ordered ‘em up! Thank God DSW had all sizes that we needed. Disaster averted!

That meant I had an entire weekend to myself to get some wedding stuff finalized. As the guys finally got their suits appropriately sized, it was time to find shoes. This was my plan: pick up my best man, head to the mall, find brown shoes, make purchase, leave mall. Total dude shopping, right? That didn’t happen.

It became REAL when I stopped by the venue to see my tireless fiancée and ever-so patient sister decorating and making the rooms look perfect. The rehearsal and festive rehearsal dinner went off without a hitch.

Here’s what did happen: we went to mall, we found brown shoes,

Our wedding week finally arrived and family and friends started to fly in. H-O-L-Y C-R-A-P! All the preparations, discussions, plans, changes, highs and lows, were all coming into place. The food and wine we ordered was way too much, but you can never have too much food—or wine— at a wedding.

Man, can you believe it? I’m getting married in less than 24 hours!

August 9th, 2014: THE best day of my life.

In emails a day and age where we are submerged in technology, social networking, and text messages, there is nothing more personal, thoughtful 18

and refreshing than getting a beautiful invitation in the mail.

A s a graphic designer and custom wedding stationer, every once in a while a potential client will utter the

unspeakable; “Why spend the money on invitations? Everyone is just going to throw them away.” I’ll excuse myself. Close my eyes for a quick second, take a deep breath and try to find that happy place (which coincidentally consists of a paper heaven where I dance on letterpressed cotton clouds, leaping to grasp beautifully lined envelopes with hand calligraphed addresses and vintage stamps) then back to reality. I get to help fellow paper lovers like myself create the perfect piece of correspondence to invite their loved ones to one of the most important days of their lives.

Registry Cards

It’s true, sometimes custom invitations can get spendy. However, even on a tight budget, as long as you stick to some old school etiquette rules, and mix in your personal wedding style, your recipients will be impressed enough to keep it. The wedding invitation is one of the few traditions we’ve kept around and in keeping with that tradition, we’ve got a cheat sheet to make sure you don’t accidentally send out 150 faux-pas; instead beautiful and tasteful invitations that are sure to impress.

Wording

Registry cards are generally a no-no and the biggest taboo in the proverbial wedding etiquette handbook. However, there is a tasteful way to include your info. We suggest a simple statement directing people to your wedding website where they can find travel info, accommodations, and of course a direct link to your bridal registry. If you do have an information card with other information on it, we think it’s acceptable to sneak it in on there - as long as it doesn’t get its own card. Just please, regretfully decline when the department store where you register offers those little business cards to insert into your perfectly planned out invitations!

The way that your invitations are worded tells people a lot more about your wedding than just the who, what, when and where. It should also tell your guests how formal the wedding will be, and, if it’s a religious ceremony, how they should dress. The way you have things worded also implies who is hosting (paying for) the wedding. There’s a little too much to dive into in this article, but be sure that you credit dear ol’ dad in the right way if he’s shelling out big bucks for the big day. If you are paying for it yourself, a simple “Together with their families” will suffice. Visit our website for a more in depth guide with examples on how to choose the perfect wording for your invitation at www.paperieandpen.com

Addressing Envelopes

Timing

There was a day in our not too ancient past where hand writing was an art. It was a sign that one was well educated and it was something that people spent their lifetimes perfecting. Today, some schools aren’t even teaching [script] handwriting so it’s important that we enjoy the art form while it’s still around at all. Budget permitting, you can hire a calligrapher to beautifully letter your envelopes. However, not all wedding budgets have the wiggle room for such a luxury itemso just be sure that your invitations are hand addressed. Even if you don’t feel you have the most beautiful handwriting, it’s more personal and traditional than printed addresses or labels. If you must do digital addressing, print it directly onto your envelope and use matching fonts and design elements to your invitation.

If you’re not having a destination wedding and the majority of your guests are in the area, 5-7 weeks ahead is an acceptable time to send out your invitation. If you are having a destination wedding or have a lot of people that will need to make travel arrangements, look more into the 7-10 week area. Consider sending out a save the date as soon as you get engaged and set a date. It’s never too early for this, but the most common time frame is 8-15 months before the big day. Save the dates can be much less formal and only need to list the date and city. Do not include specific locations or times.

Honeymooning In McCall When it comes time to choose where you’ll be honeymooning, you have so many choices; from exotic beaches to sunset safari excursions. But sometimes, the most relaxing of locales is closer than you think. McCall is well known for its array of mountain adventures, water activities, and home to one of Idaho’s best resorts. With its cozy small town comfort there is something for every vacation style. It’s the perfect destination whether you crave the outdoors or luxury at its finest.

Where To Stay There are so many options in and around this mountain town to stay and play. The most well known would be the iconic Shore Lodge; nestled right on the Payette lake, guests have the view and all the amenities right on site. From the Narrows Lounge to lakeside noshing at the Lake Grill, the food and atmosphere won’t disappoint. Shore Lodge offers many packages and rate options to choose from. Their stellar concierge service will help you with reserving the perfect room and activities bundle for you. If you’re more of a woodsy vacationer, reserving one of the many cabins or condos available year round are a great choice. Choose from lakeside with private docks or nestled further up in the mountain amongst the trees for the vibe you’re looking for. McCall Vacations is a perfect place to start in your search for lodging; they can help you with dates, styles, size, and reserving your stay. When planning your vacation in McCall, remember to think about what you’ll be doing each day. If you’ll be in the great outdoors from sunup to sunset, you might opt for lodging that will allow you to walk right out the door and into your activity of choice. Bear Creek Lodge is a perfect example- located just off Highway 55, the property is near trails for hiking and biking, close enough to the lake for water sports, and is serene and quiet enough for you to relax on your private deck at the end of the day. You can even reserve your own private 3 bedroom home for even more comfort and privacy.

What To Do McCall is the ideal spot for both play and relaxation, year round. Every day can be a new adventure; from renting a boat or jet skis for a day on the water to hiking or biking the trails to just enjoying live music over dinner and drinks. Reserve a dinner cruise on the Idaho for an amazing night on the Payette, or book a guided adventure for tubing, white water rafting, or even horseback riding. Spend the day golfing on one of McCall’s many courses, and stop by to eat and enjoy the view at places like Jug Mountain Ranch. Even in the winter boredom is at bay with snow skiing at Brundage Mountain.Skiers will be left speechless as you plow your way through knee deep powder while enjoying the scenic, towering pines all around you. You can even enjoy ice skating, and snowmobiling. When it’s time for a day of just pure relaxation, be sure to leave room in your schedule for a spa day at The Cove at Shore Lodge. Immersion pools, specialized services ranging from massages to facials to full spa day packages with healthy snacks and lunches, it’ll be just what your body ordered. Another way to relax and enjoy the mountain views is to visit one of McCall’s hotspring pools, both Gold Fork and Burgdorf are just minutes outside of town. With everything there is to do and explore in McCall and its surrounding areas, we always recommend you plan for at least a week so you can truly enjoy what this little gem in Idaho has to offer.

Where To Eat With all there is to do in McCall, eating here is one of the top must-dos. While there are more places we could mention than this article allows, some of our favorite go to spots will always make the list. Iconic and even famous eateries include My Father’s Place and Ice Cream Alley. Bistro 45 is one of the coziest spots in McCall where you can enjoy a glass or two of wine over great food and conversation, and stay for a board game or a game of Bocce Ball. Rupert’s at Hotel McCall is a fine upscale restaurant located in downtown McCall, and the Sushi Bar is one of the best we’ve ever been to. Take our word for it! If you’re a craft brew type of person, take yourself on a little tour of McCall’s local breweries- both McCall Brewery and Salmon River Brewery have it all- beer, food, and atmosphere. Or if south of the border is your flavor, try Southside Grill near the airport. Shore Lodge also offers the best of both worlds; cozy, comfortable setting, gorgeous views, and out of this world fare- whether you’re dining in or ordering in room service, count on an extraordinary meal. The resort offers 3 dining areas to choose from; The Narrows is known for their unforgettable Northwest menu, while the Lake Grill and Narrows Lounge are perfect for gourmet sandwiches, burgers, and upscale pub fare. Whatever type of adventure you’re after you can find it in McCall. From luxury to the rugged outdoors, there really is no better way to experience Idaho!

     ? Think about the reasons why you have chosen this person to spend the rest of your life with. Bring some personality into your wedding. We suggest keeping a notepad with you and every time you find yourself laughing about a little inside joke or maybe a pet name that you have for each other- write it down. It will come in handy while thinking of one-of-a-kind wedding ideas. In our wedding inspiration design, we featured sugar donuts perfectly placed on each place setting. They serve as a favor, a decoration, and a thankful sentiment to your guests with loads of personality. Each glass dome over the donut has a tag that says “We Love you More than Sprinkles.” Followed by the couple’s names and wedding date.

Are they prints or solids? What kind of fabric? Is your most favorite thing a formal little black dress, or is it jeans and a T-shirt? Your personal fashion sense is something that your friends and family will identify with you. In my opinion, the biggest compliment you receive from a loved one is that your wedding is just “So YOU!” Plus, who says you have to buy the bridal party clothing from that section of the catalog at the bridal shop? Some of our favorite looks for maids are dresses that you find at your favorite clothing stores.

From your invitations to placecards, menus, programs and signange- paper goods can be an inexpensive and beautiful addition. If you hire a professional designer to take care of your wedding invitations, ask them if there are any perks to buying a full wedding paper suite. Chances are you can get each little card down to quite an affordable price for a personalized wedding-like-no-one-else's that will give your photographer tons of details to take pictures of. If you’re hoping for a published wedding, paper goods are a must.

Give them a role and they’re sure to please.

I’    . Once you pick a color palette and style for your wedding, do what you came here to do... commit. This will make it easier for all of your vendors to deliver on your vision. design and if you have a certain style in mind, make sure to choose a venue that compliments it. Choose a venue that fits your personality as a couple. Are you the outdoorsy type, or city folk? What do you do together, where did you fall in love, where do you like to vacation? Those specific places might not be an option for your wedding day, but you can look for a venue that has the same charm and features as the places you love most. If you still can’t find anything, private residence weddings are one of the best ways to ensure a personal touch with a venue that is not available to the masses. Ask a family member with a beautiful estate or think about your own home. Another thing to think about when picking out your venue is where you’ll be taking photos. It’s always a good idea to talk to your photographer if you’re not sure about this. They’ll let you know if the venue has great locations for pictures, and if not it might be a good idea to warrant for extra time so that you can go off site for portraits.

32

On that note, if you want your photographs to be as unique as your wedding you must trust your vendors to do what you’re paying them for; especially your photographer. Don’t get your heart too set on copying poses from your pinterest board, they won’t turn out the same because you’re not at the same place on the same day in the same light and of course because that’s not a picture of you. Choose a photographer because you love their work, then be surprised when you get your one-of-a-kind images back.

A Note from the Bride

My romance with Jimmy was not instant. We met our first day of high school and even defaulted to attending Homecoming together when each of our first choices was unavailable! We became close friends, seeing a lot of each other between classes, through mutual friends, and becoming skiing buddies. In retrospect, having built a foundation on being best friends is the reason our relationship survived dating for eight years through high school, college, study abroad programs, internships, and work. We held true to our “Guys in Ties, Girls in Pearls” theme beginning with our large wedding party. Our bridesmaids wore cornflower blue formal gowns with small bow details and pearl accessories, while the groomsmen wore formal tuxedos with sear-sucker bowties and cummerbund sets from Collared Greens. I found a gown I was absolutely crazy about from Theia. The alluring silhouette with a full skirt and long train was perfectly crafted in a stunning, English netting. I had my new monogram embroidered onto the base of my mantilla-style veil for a special detail I would always cherish. Our ceremony was held at St. John’s Catholic Cathedral in Boise, Idaho, the church I have attended my entire life. My father walking me down the aisle as the organ played “Trumpet Voluntary,” surrounded by all of the people we love, and seeing my groom at the other end, is one of my most favorite memories from our wedding! The ceremony was nothing short of perfect, especially when Jimmy and I kissed to the thunderous applause of our three hundred guests. We felt the absolute support of each of our witnesses and knew that they were ready to party! The reception was held at a family friend’s private estate on esteemed Warm Springs Avenue, where my two sisters and I each celebrated our bridal showers. The garden itself is a work of art, having been designed by the same firm who created New York’s Central Park. Seeing umbrella-donned tables draped with bold, blue patterns and golf-style trivia cards, I knew the event could not have been more suited to our personalities! It was the perfect venue for the preppy, country-club meets Kentucky Derby garden party that Jimmy and I had envisioned. I absolutely loved the idea of the “Bow-Tie Bar,” which allowed guests to deck themselves out in costume pearls and bow ties, fitting again into our theme. We even had a preppy photo booth, complete with themed props like croquet mallets and Derby style hats, which was a huge hit with our guests. Grand centerpieces of delicate, white flowers and lounge areas scattered throughout the grounds helped with the garden party feel. Custom made pillows complimented the patterned table linens made especially for the day. Our tailored bride and groom chairs even embraced our theme, with a tulle skirt/ pearls and hand-tied bow tie.

You would never have known that just ten days earlier, Bliss, my family, and I were in hyper-drive securing a new caterer, bar service, pastry chef, and adapting the rentals and decor due to an unexpected change of the reception site. Miraculously, all three hundred guests were successfully notified of the venue change via custom postcards. As guests entered the gardens and gasped in disbelief, we knew the perfection I had strived for from the beginning was achieved. Just three weeks before our wedding, we were informed that Jimmy was being relocated for work to Helsinki, Finland, due to begin just ten days after our wedding! All of a sudden, our special day was going to mean so much more because it would function as a reunion, celebration, and going-away party. With the expert dedication and vision from Bliss, combined with the diligence and decisiveness of my mother, Jimmy and I were able to put our focus toward moving arrangements. Even with a major venue change just a week and a half before our wedding day, Bliss Events seamlessly produced the single, most beautiful wedding and reception, true to our original vision! We had the most spectacular time, dancing into the night beneath a giant tree and suspended chandelier. It was the happiest, most fantastic day I have ever had, made complete by every little detail. It was the perfect send off for us as we would begin our next great adventure abroad!

Love, Amy

Ben, being born and raised in Mountain Home, brought his beautiful bride Kara away from her city life for their intimate nuptials. Both living in Las Vegas Nevada, they invited their very close family and friends to share their special day. The ceremony took place outside, facing the city of Boise, with the festivities moving inside the Historic Boise Train Depot.

Ben cared more about the design of the ceremony and reception which included a mixture of glass and wood, farm tables and benches, and the 15’ structure of floral and Edison bulbs above their dance floor. Kara, being more passionate about her color, included a palette of deep purples, blacks, and blushes that matched her amazing and unique Vera Wang dress perfectly. Ben and Kara offered their guests a unique southern style chicken and waffles or a choice of salmon omelette with potato hash, biscuits and gravy, and fresh fruit. Followed by their personal coffee cake, a large variety of donuts, pastries, and maple bacon cupcakes, would complete the large spread of breakfast themed desserts. Kara, being a sister to an entertainer, (lead singer of Panic at the Disco), started the entertainment by showing her own talents by performing a Hawaiian ceremony. During the ceremony, Kara and her family welcomed Ben’s family by presenting them with beautiful flower leis from Hawaii. The ceremony came to a conclusion with Kara giving Ben a beautiful Polynesian dance.

In snowy December 2013, Bry and Matt were married in front of family in McCall, but they knew they would celebrate with all of their closest family and friends almost a year later. Held at Matt’s family ranch in Nampa, the two invited their guests to take a peek into their lives together — from Bry’s southern background to Matt’s childhood in Idaho surrounded by horses.

The reception was held in early fall, and Bry chose the loveliest shades of pinks, purples, and navy to embrace the season. Southern touches included mini gold jockeys, cotton centerpieces, and our favorite — mini passed chicken and waffle appetizer bites! Gold horseshoes and an elaborate mashed potato bar, along with the ranch as the setting for the entire event gave guests a grand Idaho welcome. The most memorable piece of the event was a replay of the entire ceremony and the couple’s vows. It was the perfect way to include the guests that couldn’t be with them at the actual ceremony, as well as a beautiful way for the couple to remember their wedding day.

Emily &Wally It was only fitting this couple gathered friends and family under the river birch tree in the English garden at the Idaho Botanical Garden last Spring. Emily’s father, Don Belts, developed the master plan for the entire garden and did the specific design on the garden where Emily and Wally exchanged their vows in a ceremony they wrote. Each member of their immediate family had a role in the ceremony, including their three nephews. After the ceremony, guests weaved their way, following the newlyweds, through the gardens for tapas and a flamenco dancer and guitar performance in the meditation garden. Keeping with the theme, guests were treated to acoustic guitar during dinner created by Open Table on the main patio under the new structure.

“Because the garden is such a beautiful and romantic setting, we chose decor and details to enhance that sentiment. We worked with vendors who we knew could bring that to fruition. We chose a watercolor accent for all of our paper goods, including the painting my dad did that lined the invitation envelope. Flowers at Will designed all our flower decor. Will knew my favorite flower and he knew we wanted a very organic feel with a pop of bling. What he came up with surpassed my wildest dreams. Our wedding truly captured what is most important to us as a couple.

When it came time to plan their wedding, Lindsay and Albert, both having had previous marriages, chose to celebrate their union with only their children and officiant by their sides. From the beginning, Lindsay expressed a desire to focus on the commitment they were making to their newly blended family. The result was an incredibly romantic, private ceremony, deep in the mountains of Idaho City. The couple and their children met at the cabin they shared and dressed on separate floors to save the couple’s first look for the aisle. The officiant, the groom, and the groom’s children left for the ceremony ahead of time. The bride and her son followed ten minutes later in a utility terrain vehicle, adding a fun twist. The ceremony was set amidst the woods, a site picked especially for the sound of the nearby, flowing river and because of a grand tree to serve as the backdrop. The tree gave the bride the wonderful idea to surprise her husband-to-be with a custom, stained glass window, which he would see for the first time upon arriving to the ceremony site. An aisle of large wooden stumps, candles, and wildflowers led the bride, escorted by her son, to her waiting family. An ornate rug established a meeting place beneath the tree while the four children (the only guests) sat on large tree stumps brought to the location. The bride wore a stunningly simple dress she found online, and was radiant with a bouquet of wild blooms and sunflowers, chosen to honor a dear friend who had passed. The children wore vibrant shades of purple to celebrate the happy occasion. During the ceremony, aluminum cans and streamers were attached to the back of the UTV. This served as the getaway vehicle for the newlyweds to return to the cabin’s reception site. Meanwhile, an intimate meal was being prepared by a close family friend and chef,

Lindsay & Albert so it would be ready upon arrival. Once at the cabin, the couple immediately headed for the front yard’s zip line and the newly blended family took turns speeding along the wire. After plenty of laughs, a path of stumps and candles guided the family to their private dinner table for six, outdoors, among the mountain views. The bride commented how easy it was to sit together with her family for the first time, focusing on the incredible day and what had transpired. The table décor was personalized with an array of items the bride had shopped while planning her wedding. Vintage plates were chosen for each family member, antique glassware allowed all to join in the celebratory toast, and moss picked from the couple’s property created a lush table runner. Vintage, brass candlesticks held tea light votives and provided the only source of light as the romantic evening progressed. The evening concluded with a family caravan back to Boise so the couple could prepare for their honeymoon trip early the next morning. In keeping with the purpose of the union, the children would join the couple a few days later, making it a family vacation. Lindsay and Albert’s intimate elopement forever united their family, creating a beautiful, shared foundation as they begin their lives together.

CULINARY CORNER

Featuring Chef Steven Topple

introducing a new monthly column on the blog www.idowed.com

By Kyla Sawyer

featuring chefs across the state of idaho

Whether it’s a lavish buffet for hundreds or a plate presentation with an intimate guest list, Executive Chef Steven Topple of Shore Lodge has perfected the art of rustic yet elegant seasonal dishes that highlight local and regional ingredients. “No matter the size of the wedding from 15 to 150 or more, its such a thrill to poke my head out and see everyone enjoying the food,” said Topple, who is best known to his clientele and friends simply as “Chef Steve”. Juicy, handpicked huckleberries. Scrumptious, local Valley County mushrooms. These are just a few of Chef Steve’s favorite seasonal selections that delight the palates of Shore Lodge bridal parties and guests. Fresh salmon and trout, succulent Double R Ranch beef from the nearby Okanogan region of Washington as well as lamb, elk, venison and buffalo are some of the great Pacific Northwest choices Chef Steve has mastered for his bridal party menus. “I love to prepare great seafood and steak items,” said Chef Steve. “My scallop dish is a great crowd pleaser, also the duo of beets with local goat cheese, arugula salad and port dressing is another big hit.” Paring food selections with a couple’s chosen wedding style is priority when Chef Steve first sits down with a bride and groom to plan their menu. “Some want a buffet, some want a 5-star, top notch, plated dinner,” said Chef Steve. “We have a really nice banquet menu with lots of incredible options, but sometimes brides are looking for a little something extra special so that’s when sitting down with them to figure that out works well.” Topple started his delicious career at age 16 and graduated from the culinary school of Highbury College. The Portsmouth, England native gained valuable culinary knowledge cooking for prestigious restaurant properties in London, Scotland, New York, San Francisco and Vail, Colorado before taking over as Executive Chef of Shore Lodge in the spring of 2013.
