General Information Eligibility The Food Science and Industry Undergraduate Programs are open to students who live in the United States or are active duty American military and their dependents. Students residing in the United States or Canada are eligible to pursue graduatelevel distance education food science programs. Prospective students must hold a B.S. degree and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 for regular admission.

Course Delivery Method Courses are offered online using K-State Online, a course management system designed to deliver an interactive, web-based classroom to students. K-State Online enables students with time and geographic constraints to take advantage of the flexibility of learning over the Internet. Distance course communication tools include email, message boards, streaming videos and chat rooms. Students must have access to a computer with a reliable high speed Internet connection to be successful in courses.

What are the computer requirements? Guidelines for computer requirements can be found online at: k-state.edu/its/buying

When do courses start? Fall term begins in late August, spring term begins in mid-January and summer term begins in early June.

What is the cost? K-State’s tuition rates are an exceptional value and are very competitive with those of other universities. Distance education fees are the same whether you are an outof-state student or a Kansas resident. Tuition includes a per-credit-hour charge and additional fees for services such as licensing, technical support and media services. In addition, an administrative fee applies to students participating in the master’s program.

Undergraduate Certificate (Nondegree)

An undergraduate certificate in food science requires the completion of 20 credit hours of food science or closely related courses. With an undergraduate certificate, you will gain more technical knowledge in the area of food science that will allow you to advance professionally. This certificate is for professionals working in the food industry who have some college credit or a bachelor’s degree in another field. Science pre-requisite(s) are necessary for completion of the coursework. The 20-hour, nondegree undergraduate certificate will provide an overview of food science.

How to Apply Apply online at global.k-state.edu/ag/foodscience. In the form you will be asked the following questions, and for the certificate you should answer as follows:

After answering these questions you will have the opportunity to select the Food Science Certificate from a list.

Starting Dates Fall term begins in late August, spring term begins in mid-January and summer term begins in early June. Students must take 20 credit hours of coursework, but they may select courses that fit their elligible educational goals/interests. A minimim of 12 credit hour must come from Food Science Industry coded (FDSCI) courses at the 300 level or higher. The remaining required credit hours may come from additional FDSCI coursework or any of the approved electives. Graduate Programs Food Science Master’s Degree Non-Thesis (course work only) Option – 34 credit hours The Non-Thesis option requires a minimum of 34 credit hours with 20-22 core credits and at least 18 hours at the 700 level or above. The core courses, as outlined below, are to ensure that the student possesses critical graduate level food science knowledge and communication skills. In addition to completion of course work, a final presentation and oral examination is administered on campus (Manhattan, Kan.) during the semester of anticipated graduation. This exam includes a public scientific presentation on a relevant topic followed by an oral examination by the student's graduate committee. This process is described in “Planning for the Final Oral Examination,” which is available on the Food Science Institute website, foodsci.k-state.edu/distancemasters.

Food Safety and Defense Graduate Certificate The 12-credit Food Safety and Defense Graduate Certificate will prepare students to meet the challenges of accidental or deliberate food contamination within the food industry, protect public health and minimize foodborne illnesses. This graduate certificate program is offered through the AG Interactive Distance Education Alliance (AG*IDEA), a consortium of accredited universities offering online graduate programs with online courses taught by the best faculty in the discipline.

Food Safety and Defense Curriculum – 12 credit hours Certificate Requirements The certificate program requires 12 credit hours comprised of core and elective courses, as outlined below. Students must complete the required 12 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and may have no grade lower than a “B” in any certificate program course.

Administrative Fee An administrative per term fee (three terms per year), from start to finish of the degree requirements, is charged in addition to the cost of courses. The fee is paid each term regardless of the number of credit hours taken. For additional information, see foodsci.k-state.edu/students-and-programs/distanceeducation/master-of-science.html. If the fee is not paid, the student is dropped from the program and must reapply to continue.

Deadlines The application packet deadline for fall term admission is April 15 and the deadline for spring admission is September 15.
