SUCCESS FOR OUR COMMUNITY Minnesota Children’s Museum is pleased to celebrate the completion of an exciting, busy and FUN year! Since opening in April 2012, Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester has served more than 70,000 visitors. In fiscal year 2014 (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014), a grand total of 29,912 visitors experienced the lively programs and exhibits at the Museum. CHAMPIONING THE ESSENTIAL ROLE OF PLAY WITH NEW EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMS Experts are not kidding when they say play is fundamental for kids. The Museum’s work is centered on research that shows play contributes to a child’s cognitive, social-emotional and physical development. This year, children and families engaged in 10 new exhibits. Children picked carrots in Peter Rabbit’s garden during Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites, lassoed cows in Joshua’s Journey: A Black Cowboy Rides the Chisholm Trail, built Humpty Dumpty a wall in Mother Goose Math, rode on a rooster in Framed! Step into Art and plowed a field in Ag Combine. Changing exhibits means the experience is ever-changing, making the experience exciting and engaging for parents and children.

Debuting this year was Mayo’s Big Healthy Fun! for 30 minutes on Thursdays and Saturdays. Children energetically explored ribbon sticks, scarves, scooters, rhythm instruments, hula hoops, steppers, stilts, basketball hoops, a giant parachute and many more colorful and exciting materials. Families were very excited to take this program outdoors during the warm months of the year. Rochester area children and families also enjoyed visiting artists and storytellers who live in Minnesota, including Northfield author, Mary Bleckwell, writer of children’s books including Henry, “THANKS FOR You’re Hungry Again and Henry, BRINGING THIS TO You’re Late Again. ROCHESTER, WONDERFUL TO HAVE IT HERE.”

EXTENDING PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITIES TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FACING BARRIERS

REACHING MORE FAMILIES THROUGH COMMUNITY EVENTS

This past year, Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester particularly focused on reaching families with young children facing financial or other barriers that might prevent attendance or participation in Museum programs. With the support of the State of Minnesota’s Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund, the Museum launched the Play for All access programs. Through this initiative we:

Over the year, Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester conducted a variety of outreach events designed to engage the Museum with the community. Following are just a few of the outreach activities from this past year:

• Offered 415 Free memberships to low-income families in Olmsted County. • Conducted eight Family Night events, welcoming 699 visitors for organizations such as Head Start, Early Head Start, WIC, School Readiness and Hand in Hand. • Opened the Museum to 37 school and community groups, welcoming 1,035 students and chaperones who came to the Museum through reduced admission and bus transportation stipends. • Made family passes available for checkout to Rochesterarea families at community organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, the Women’s Shelter, Boys and Girls Club and the Aldrich Nursery School. As a special community-wide effort, we launched Play Possible this past year to make Minnesota Children’s Museum of Rochester more accessible and welcoming to children with disabilities and their families. With support from the Rochester Area Foundation and individual donors from the Rochester community, we purchased a variety of adaptive equipment including noise-cancelling headphones, weighted blankets and other items that can make a visit to the Museum a bit easier for many children. We also gathered parents and children for special open houses so we could hear their input on what would work best for their families.

• United Way Wild About Reading • Healthy Day at YMCA • Olmsted County Family Resource Fair • Rochesterfest parade and Family Night • Possibilities Ice Cream Social • Olmsted County Fair • Winterfest The Museum also hosted exciting community and member events “WE HAVE REALLY such as October and June’s ENJOYED THE EXHIBITS Superhero Scramble AND STAFF AT THE Obstacle Course, Cardboard ROCHESTER MUSEUM.” Sled Race, Noon Year’s Eve –ROCHESTER PARENT and other events.
