ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Art of All Kinds For centuries, artists in just about every genre have been inspired by Monterey County’s crashing surf, towering redwoods and the fog that comes and goes at will. Today, the county literally abounds with artistic expression, from music to theater to painting and more.

Music & Theater Monterey County has one of the busiest music calendars in all of California. Dance is well served, too, with the SpectorDance festivals and renowned companies such as Pilobolus and Paul Taylor coming to the county several times a year. Many of these performances take place in the historic Sunset Center. This building dates back to 1931, and since then, it has evolved from Carmel-by-the-Sea’s first schoolhouse auditorium to the cultural heart of the Central Coast. Following an extensive remodeling in 2003, the Center became the only theater between San Luis Obispo and San Jose to house state-of-the-art acoustics. Today the facility is enjoyed by locals and tourists as the Monterey Peninsula’s center for the visual and performing arts. Pacific Repertory celebrates 100 years of local live theater, with performances in Carmel’s Golden Bough and Forest Theaters, while The Western Stage in Salinas is the only theatrical school authorized to adapt works by John Steinbeck to the stage. The fine new theater at California State University Monterey Bay offers a wide-ranging program of special events, while SpectorDance’s studio in Marina presents two dance festivals every year.
