“Welcome” to Okinawa Living

The Most Magical Time of the Year

April showers bring May flowers…this old English proverb may hold true in the United Kingdom, but on the beautiful island of Okinawa, April customarily heralds the beginning of beach season with many already open and others fully prepped for swimming and water sports. As the end of this month approaches, be prepared for a stampede of beachgoers slathered in sunscreen as tourists flock to the island for Golden Week.

Some islanders (and veteran residents) ruefully state that springtime on Okinawa— with its mild and pleasant temperature and cool breezes—only lasts for a blink of an eye before the rain and humidity begin in May, followed by the hammer-strikes of the summer sun starting in June. While this is not far from the truth, it does make this magical time of the year even more special and appreciated.

Urizun, which means “spring” in Uchinâguchi (the native language of Okinawa), is when many locals head outdoors to enjoy the pleasant spring weather before the first big rush of tourists hit Okinawa’s shores.

Make sure that you also take this opportunity to get out and about to enjoy Okinawa before the rainy season begins. Have kids? Start by flipping to our special “Parks in Paradise” edition of Out + About on p. 8, followed by our “Month of the Military Child” edition of Kids + Parents for information on upcoming events. Got a furry family member that barks? Turn to p. 56 for a list of “Okinawa’s PAWfect Places,” followed by a montage of a few of the canine members of our community at their favorite spots.

Our main feature this month will introduce you to basketball royalty—the reigning B.League champion Ryukyu Golden Kings. But for those looking for a bit of healthy competition for themselves, the April issue features tons of events to participate in including basketball tournaments, triathlons, powerlifting and much, much more. If you’re feeling more laid-back, and your idea of springtime should absolutely involve fields of flowers, rejoice! Book a trip with Tours+ to visit Ie Island and attend their annual Lily Festival starting on April 27—learn more about this tour by turning to p. 37.

With so much to do in April, it’s almost enough to give one a joyful affliction of spring fever (the kind of fever you want to get)!

As always, we thank you for picking up this issue of Okinawa Living Magazine. Now, time to turn the page and let your journey begin!

feedback from the ICE Program and Facebook

The staff at the Courtney Typhoon Motors are really helpful. I recently bought a car from someone but had no car maintenance knowledge. Apparently, I needed a new air filter and power steering fluid, but I had no idea how to put power steering fluid in my car. Typically, when I go to car places, I feel like I’m getting laughed at for not knowing anything about cars, but I did not feel this way at Typhoon Motors!

When I came back to order, pay for, and pick up an air filter I continued to have a great experience. Every single staff member was super helpful. Thank you to Courtney Typhoon Motors; I will be coming back by if I ever need help with my car!

I went to the Sip and Paint on February 15, on Camp Foster. It took me awhile to submit this comment because my husband and I have been going back and forth about the instructor’s name and I ended up being right—it’s Lawanda [Thrower]! I want to say Thank you to Lawanda and Mark [Pate] for the wonderful event. The class was fun, engaging, interactive and didn’t even feel like a class to be honest. It was interesting to learn that my color temperament didn’t change, and my husband’s did. This helped us understand how we can better interact with each other. We discussed communication tactics and a lot more.

My husband and I have taken Four Lenses before but this time we learned a lot of new information. Although we were sipping on our wine, Lawanda and Mark kept it professional, fun and very lighthearted. They constantly walked the room, engaged in conversation with us and made sure we were entertained the entire night. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and I appreciate MCCS for their talented trainers. Thank you very much Mrs. Lawanda and Mr. Mark!

I am so very grateful that my kids got to experience the blessing that is EGA. We’ve been with them since 2022, and Coach Tiffany [Mills] has built an incredible program with phenomenal staff and class options.

My girls have graduated through the programs, participated in the no-school camps and my oldest had her 5th birthday at EGA. It was the smoothest and most exciting birthday party that I’ve experienced for one of my kids.

I love the environment, responsiveness, patience and excellence this program offers. I’m sad that between schedule shifts and an upcoming PCS we won’t be able to continue. But I’m so very grateful that our family can look back on this experience as a positive core memory of our girls during our time on Okinawa. I wish there was an EGA at every duty station!

Talks of starting a professional basketball team on Okinawa began in 2005, coinciding with the founding of the independently operated Basketball Japan League (bjleague). This six-team league was based on the American franchise system of professional teams and meant to compete with the already established Japan Super League, run by the Japan Basketball Association, where large corporations employed players. In 2006, the Okinawa Basketball Corporation was established and at the end of the 2006–2007 season, it was announced that the Ryukyu Golden Kings would join the bjleague the following season.

“Every team, every new franchise goes through their forming [stages], then their building [stages] and that first season, there was a lot of forming and a lot of learning,” shares Ryukyu Golden Kings assistant coach Keith Richardson. In the beginning, the team played at small facilities that held 2–3,000 spectators. They

did not have their own practice facility and instead relied on renting local gyms to practice. Richardson said that whenever they could not get an off-base gym to practice, they would ask permission from MCCS to practice at one of their Semper Fit basketball courts. “We were lucky to have that relationship where we could go and use their facilities. It helped us a lot. If not, we would not have been able to practice,” he divulged.

The bjleague grew exponentially from a six-team to a 24-team league in the ten years it was active. The Kings dominated the playoffs four times in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2016 and won the most titles.

In 2014, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) grew concerned over the division and disorganization of the sport within Japan, which caused both leagues to be suspended from international competitions. As a result, in 2015 the competing leagues merged into what is now the B.League.

Richardson mentioned that going from the bjleague to the B.League caused big changes for the team over the past 6–7 years. One of the biggest changes he attributes to the work they have put into building the team’s culture, which encompasses their values, attitudes and beliefs when it comes to stepping onto the court and competing. “What is special about our team is the culture that we have instilled in this organization, but also, we are all about family. I am a former active-duty Marine, I served five years in the Marine Corps, and I see a lot of comparison [in the] camaraderie within our team. Everybody has everybody’s back and [they are] really supportive of each other,” the assistant coach shared proudly.

Ryukyu Golden Kings star player Jack Cooley added, “We all play for each other and I think it’s why we have success over other teams, because our team style is more as a unit. We don’t have as many individual big names whereas we get success

through a team level, rising together. I think that’s what King’s basketball is [all about], it’s being great together, […] we all lift each other up and I really think that could be our secret weapon.”

Something you might not know about professional basketball in Japan is that teams have rules when it comes to imports; they can only have three foreign players and one foreign-born player who is a naturalized Japanese citizen. There is also a limit on how many foreign players can be on the court at a time, which is two each quarter, not counting the naturalized citizen.

When it comes to the way the game is played, according to Jack Cooley, it is more point guard oriented compared to leagues outside of Japan that are what he referred to as “big man oriented.” In the B.League, foreign players (with their height advantage) take on the role of wings, and they mostly play center and power forward positions.

Notably the biggest change for the Kings came in 2021 with the opening of the Okinawa Arena, Japan’s first Western-style sports arena and the Ryukyu Golden Kings' new home venue. This six-story state-of-the-art structure can accommodate over 8,000 people—making it the second largest venue in the B.League. The design allows spectators to have an unobstructed view of the court, no matter where they are sitting, and the average number of spectators per game is close to 7,000, double of what it used to be during the team’s bjleague days.

“The audience has changed in so many different ways, there are so many more Americans coming,” Richardson commented. The opening of the new arena, promotions

on and off-base, accessible ticket purchasing and the addition of a bilingual announcer have resulted in a wave of American spectators joining in on the fun.

The team behind the Ryukyu Golden Kings has put together such a captivating production that it keeps everyone, especially newcomers, on the edge of their seat waiting to see what is coming next. “It’s basketball, but in my eyes it’s in that realm of sports entertainment as well, there’s always something going on,” added Richardson. During timeouts and halftime, there are events big and small featuring cheerleading performances, appearances by different iterations of the team’s mascot Gordy, free-throw challenges and other surprises that you will have to experience for yourself!

APRIL 2024 | OKINAWA LIVING 29

American fans have certainly influenced Okinawan fans, as noted by the assistant coach. Kings’ fans are rowdier than those at away games, with lots of clapping, cheering, “defense” and “Ryukyu Kings” chanting, finger whistling and even some booing like you would hear at any stateside game—with an added Ryukyu flair, of course.

Richardson commented that at home games, courtside season ticket holders have been known to attempt to get into the heads of the opposing team players—especially the foreign players—because many fans here speak English, something they have not heard at other arenas in Japan.

Cooley boasted, “I don’t say it lightly that we have the best fans in Japan and the world, we really do. They are

extremely dedicated. No stadium gets louder than ours, no fans cheer louder.” He had a lot to say about the fans’ passion, but also emphasized that they truly embody the politeness Okinawa (and Japan) is known for, and added that having such an uplifting fan base backing the team makes going out and playing 60 games a season all worthwhile.

The team has been working extensively to “Bring Okinawa to the World” by carrying the pride and passion of Okinawa on their shoulders. The Kings strive to represent the island and its people the way they deserve—not only in Japan but throughout the world.

APRIL 2024 | OKINAWA LIVING 31

The Ryukyu Golden Kings have consistently brought their ‘A’ game to basketball arenas nationwide, winning four bjleague championships and making it to the playoffs every year in the B.League. In 2022, they came in second place. But all of the hard work they put in that following summer paid off because in 2023 they were crowned champions!

Jack Cooley recalled, “The way it felt to be crowned B.League Champions last season was incredible, it was such a rush of emotions because we worked so hard. […] It was a lot for us and I am very proud of the way we handled it.

It was a feeling that I am really looking forward to trying to experience again this season.”

The 2023–2024 basketball season ends the first week of May, so be sure to visit MCCS Tours+ to purchase your tickets for one (or more) of the team’s six home games happening this month. Help us root for our home-away-from home team—the Ryukyu Golden Kings! Information on ticket prices and seating will be provided at Tours+ during the time of purchase. 3v3 Basketball Tournament

Gather your Trio and Shoot your Shot!

Born in parks in the late 1980s, 3-on-3 basketball soon ruled the streets and backyards throughout the United States. It was popular in urban areas, where there was often only one basket and a half-court available. There was no need for a referee and teams were formed on the spot.

In the mid-2000s, the International Basketball Federation organized a 3-on-3 basketball trial for the Asian Indoor Games and it was so well received that it made its

official debut as an Olympic sport at the Tokyo Summer Games.

Gather your team of three and shoot your shot at the 3v3 Basketball Tournament taking place at the MCAS Futenma Fitness Center April 27–28. This event is open to all participants (SOFA & non-SOFA) 16 years and older. Register via Eventbrite by April 22 at 1 p.m., for $125 per team. For more information, email adultsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs. org or call 636-2672 / 098-970-2672. 

April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness on alcohol abuse. The impacts of alcohol abuse can be devastating and lead to alcohol poisoning, chronic diseases, kidney failure and poor mental health. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in the United States alone, more than 140,000 people die per year from alcohol misuse—deaths that can easily be prevented. Abusing alcohol opens the doors for over 200 diseases and injury-related conditions, all which are avoidable. The Single Marine Program (SMP) will be hosting an open house tour at SACC (Substance Abuse Counseling Center) throughout the entire month beginning on April 3. April is Sexual Health Month

Foster a Healthy Sex Life

Sexual health entails family planning and reproductive health as well as sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

According to the CDC, the most commonly reported STDs in America are chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. If left untreated, STDs can hinder your daily life resulting in complications with procreating, chronic pain, HIV and even death. To keep you and your partner healthy, get screened regularly.

During the month of April, MCCS Health Promotion will be raising awareness

Wear Denim with a Purpose Denim Day

about sexual health at fitness centers on Camps Kinser, Foster, Courtney, Hansen, Schwab and MCAS Futenma. Information along with resources will be provided to help you understand the risks associated with unprotected sex, such as unwanted pregnancies and life-threatening viruses. For more information and accommodations call 645-3910 / 098-970-3910 or email mccshealthpromotions@okinawa.usmc-mccs. org. Visit okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/semperfit or facebook.com/semperfit to find out more.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month (SAAPM) and the last Wednesday of the month is Denim Day. The non-profit Peace Over Violence has been running this campaign since 1999 as an opportunity to practice solidarity and support survivors of sexual violence. But why denim? The campaign began as a response to an overturned conviction by the Italian Supreme Court where the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have aided her attacker in the assault. On April 24, the Sexual Assault Prevention & Response team invite you to be an ally and wear denim with a purpose to commemorate SAAPM.

For more on how you can step forward and prevent sexual assault, contact the Installation Sexual Assault Response Coordinator at 645-2134 / 098-970-2134. For those that are in need of assistance themselves, the 24/7 Sexual Assault Support Line is 645HOPE (4673) / 098-970-4673 and the DoD Safe Helpline is 1-877-995-5247. 

Elevate Your Poetry

The first of April embarks the month-long celebration of National Poetry Month. Whether it be a haiku, limerick, free verse or anything in between, poetry is an expressive outlet celebrated for hundreds of years. Ranging from strictly structured verse to loose interpretation of concepts in a seemingly wandering fashion, poetry illustrates a story for your audience (or yourself) through words. The beauty of poetry stems from its ability to be delivered through different tones, dramatic long pauses (or the lack thereof) and creative freedom.

The celebration of poetry reminds us of the importance of written words, the emotions they convey and keeping traditions alive so culture can thrive.

Camp Foster Library will give its ode to National Poetry Month (with a twist) by hosting their fourth annual Jazz & Poetry Night—a magical evening combining poetry and music. The evening involves literary aficionados (and appreciators) getting together to hear live poetry readings as live jazz music is performed by the talented III MEF Band.

Does reading your original poetry out loud accompanied by a live jazz band sound like a bucket list idea? Then mark your calendar for April 26 at 5 p.m. to check that off your list! Open to all SOFA status members of all ages, this special evening is just one of the many unique programs the library has to offer.

Only 10 slots are available for those ready for the spotlight; to reserve yours, send an email to foster.library@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org or call 645-7178/098-970-7178. For more information, visit okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/libraries. 

VolunteerCeremonyRecognition

Thank You for Giving Back

Giving back without the expectation of getting something in return is one of the most selfless things an individual can do. Volunteering your time within the community often goes unnoticed as there isn’t special pay or boisterous recognition—in fact, most things are willingly done quietly and behind the scenes. MCB Butler wants to express their utmost gratitude to the benevolent individuals who make the extra effort to volunteer their time and give them the recognition that they deserve.

On April 19 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Butler Officers’ Club, 180 individuals who have collectively contributed nearly 11,000 hours of volunteer time will be celebrated. In addition, the Single Marine Program will shine a spotlight on six outstanding Marines, representing each camp on island, who will receive the Single Marine Program Award in recognition of their exemplary service.

The 2024 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony will be a prestigious event featuring the presentation of esteemed awards, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Volunteer Service Award. These awards recognize exceptional service members or civilians nominated by their respective commands for their outstanding contributions to the community. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is based on hours completed, while the Volunteer Service Award is by selection from the individual’s unit.

Let’s come together to celebrate the selfless dedication and commitment of these exceptional individuals who embody the spirit of service and community.

Okinawa Living Magazine extends our heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients and expresses gratitude for their invaluable contributions to our community. If you’re inspired to join the spirit of volunteerism and make a positive impact, call 645-3749 or email volunteernow@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org. 

Connect with Your Baby Infant Massage Class

The bond between a parent and child may be one of the strongest and most important human connections, but it’s not always something that is easily felt. That’s why nurturing a secure bond between you and your infant is essential. Creating moments where the two of you can feel safe and connected is crucial to the healthy development of your baby’s sense of self and security in the world. Infant massage involves the most important elements of bonding and teaches the ideal interaction to build trust and love.

During the Infant Massage Class, home visitors—who are counselors and nurses—will teach parents massage techniques that can have many benefits such as relief of gas or colic symptoms, promotion of brain development for babies, reduction in postpartum depression for mothers and reduction in stress and improved sleep for all parties.

The class is offered as a four-part series once a week on Thursdays of each month on Camp Foster from 10 to 11 a.m. Registration is required and can be done by emailing NPSPOkinawa@usmc.mil or by calling 645-0396.

Additional services offered by the New Parent Support Program team include home visits, Parents In Uniform, Baby Boot Camp classes and the interactive group Play Morning. You can learn more about these offerings at okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/npsp.

The Calif Kitchen

Come as you are and bring the kids!

American Village in Chatan is one of those areas where you could spend hours wandering about and still not see everything it has to offer. There are quirky nooks and crannies to explore, souvenir shopping and (most importantly) endless restaurant options with just about every type of cuisine available.

Parents with children will be overjoyed to learn that some of these restaurants are incredibly kid (and pet) friendly! If you’re looking for the perfect place to dine during the Month of the Military Child, look no further than The Calif Kitchen.

Located on the third floor of the Depot Island Seaside Building, The Calif Kitchen exudes a colorful and welcoming island vibe as you walk through the doors. The restaurant’s interior and exterior blend together thanks to the sliding-door wall that’s often left open to let in the refreshing ocean breeze. The expansive outdoor patio features a stunning view of the East China Sea that can be enjoyed no matter the weather or time of day.

The Calif Kitchen’s extensive menu features everything from shareable appetizers, salads, plus a variety of rice and cast iron skillet dishes. Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy their pancakes, mini parfaits, shaved ice, skillet s’mores and blueberry French toast. Top it off with a coffee, tea or one of their refreshing yogurt-based drinks.

One of the things that makes The Calif Kitchen special is the child-friendly services they offer. Owner Ryo Yamasaki shared that he used to own a café in mainland Japan where he first noticed that parents with children were not able to fully enjoy their meals. Now a father of two, Yamasaki-san wanted to include some amenities at The Calif

Kitchen for the sake of these customers. The goal? For parents to be able to come as they are, without worry, and for kids to be able to have fun while giving their parents a much-needed break.

The Calif Kitchen has a play area (flanked by six high chairs) with books, an assortment of toys, coloring pages and a television with classic cartoons for kids to enjoy while they wait for their meal, along with a nursing and changing room for parents with infants.

And, if that wasn’t enough, they also offer diapers, powdered milk, snacks (for kids of all ages), wipes and hot water free of charge! For ¥220, they offer baby food as well as rice or bread. Their kids’ menu features plates with curry rice or hamburg steak and sausage, a healthy assortment of sides, candy and a toy of their choosing for ¥700. Other stars of the kids’ menu include smaller portions of udon noodles, pancakes or curry rice for just ¥330.

We saw the care and thoughtfulness Yamasakisan has put into his café firsthand as he showed off storage boxes full of snacks and toys kept behind the counter alongside an assortment of bibs, eating utensils and even baby scissors to cut food into bite-size pieces. The restaurant is also strollerfriendly with an elevator that brings you right inside; just make sure to press the button labeled with the name of the café.

The Calif Kitchen is such a great place for kids that we bet they’ll put up a fight when it’s time to leave. And, with this café’s relaxing atmosphere and delicious menu items for adults, we’re equally sure that their parents won’t put up much of a fight!

MCCS Flea Markets

It May be Junk to You…

A wise person once said “waste not, want not…” However, try as we might, we always somehow seem to end up with stuff that we really don’t need (and some items we can’t even remember buying such as that exercise bike now being used as a clothes rack). The best answer isn’t busting your gut hauling it to the curb as garbage; turn your unwanted items into cash at an MCCS Flea Market!

Whether you’re interested in turning some of your belongings into cash, or you’re a glutton for punishment shopping for more new-to-you items, here’s what you should know. MCCS Flea Markets on Camp Foster are held from noon to 3 p.m., while Camp Courtney hosts a flea market from 7 to 10 a.m. To see the full schedule of upcoming dates and maps to locations, visit okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/fleamarket. Booths

Computers, Furniture and More Warehouse

Sale!

for sellers are available to SOFA ID card holders island-wide on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a booth, arrive on-site an hour early and pay the $15 cash fee. SOFA and non-SOFA shoppers are welcome, so sellers should plan to make change in both dollars and yen.

Aside from finding your next treasure or going home to a cleaner closet, flea markets help reduce trash, which is great—especially because an estimated ¥10 billion is spent on waste disposal in Okinawa each year. Flea markets do have certain rules and requirements, so be sure to review these policies at okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/fleamarket. For more information, call MCCS Special Events at 645-5829. 

Did you know that MCCS conducts weekly sales of excess Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) property every Wednesday? Items such as computers, monitors, furniture, sporting equipment, recreational equipment and more are usually available.

These sales take place on Camp Foster in Bldg. 5600 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the hours of 8–11:30 a.m., the sale is open to SOFA ID card holders only, while both card holders and non-SOFA ID card holders may make purchases from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to warehouse sales, MCCS also conducts sealed bid sales for larger items on a semi-monthly basis. Items offered include vehicles such as sedans, vans and trucks, larger gym equipment and even hard-to-get specialty items such as forklifts. Sales are announced on facebook.com/mccsokinawa at the beginning of the month, and sealed bids are accepted Monday–Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the MCCS Supply Branch in Bldg. 5600 on Camp Foster (behind the Commissary) until bidding is closed.

For more information about warehouse or sealed bid sales, contact MCCS Supply via email at warehousesales@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org or at 645-3954 

If you have a sociable pooch in your hands, a visit to one of the on-base dog parks should be in the books. Along with the newly opened dog park on Camp Foster, there are parks on Camps Kinser and Lester, Chibana and Torii Station. Torii Beach is also pet friendly—owners must follow pet leash policy, owner and pet rules—as well as beaches on Camps Courtney and Schwab. Once a year in October, MCCS hosts a Pet Plunge at the McTureous Aquatic Center, so bookmark it for later this year!

If you’ve got a road trip buddy that lives for sticking their head out of the window why not book yourself a staycation? Both Okuma Beach and Navy Getaways White Beach have pet-friendly rooms at affordable prices. If you’re wanting to maximize your time up north, Okuma Beach is a great location (although dogs are not allowed on the beach); you can bring them along to explore Okinawa’s northernmost areas. Daisekirinzan offers great hiking under cover of trees with a lookout point you won’t want to miss! Navy Getaways White Beach does allow pets at the beach and campsite, if a night under the stars is more your vibe.

Speaking of escapes, did you know that most of the ferries to Okinawa’s outer islands are dog-friendly? Ferries to the Kudaka, Tsuken, Ie, Izena, Iheya and Kerama islands all allow dogs; they may require your dog to be muzzled. In order to best enjoy your island getaway, we highly recommend reserving a spot on the ferry for your own car, because dogs are not allowed on local buses, taxis or rental cars.

If you have a small dog (up to 15kg/33lbs) and are looking for a lavish island holiday that does not require you to take a ferry, look no further than the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort—they have dog-friendly rooms and even offer a special room service menu prepared by their chef with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Fuu Café is a great dogfriendly option tucked into a corner of Sesoko Island and offers great ambience, delicious food and a large yard for your pup to explore.

APRIL 2024 | OKINAWA LIVING 57

While we are on the topic of islands, let’s chat about beaches. Okinawa, being the subtropical island it is, is surrounded by crystal clear waters, so of course the beach is one of the top places you can take your pup year-round. Public beaches on Okinawa are... dog-friendly but be aware... that Japan has strict leash laws. There are countless... options and some... of the most recommended are Toguchi Beach in Yomitan, Baba Beach in Sunabe and Sunrise Beach in Kin. We encourage you to get out there and find your favorite!

Another thing to note is that most beaches on Okinawa have rough coral sand...so the same way we humans benefit from wearing felt bottom shoes at the beaches here, your dog may need booties to protect their paws. These would also come in handy if you’re looking into hiking alongside your four-legged friend.

If you’re looking for more of a dry outing and want to venture outside your neighborhood, there are lots of fun places to walk your pooch around the island. Dog-friendly walking options are endless—whether it’s a low-impact walk around Peace Memorial Park, Comprehensive Park, Cape Zanpa Park or at one of the local reservoirs including Kurashiki, Kin or Kanna. A scenic walk around Okinawa’s historical castle ruins—Zakimi, Katsuren, Nakijin, Nago Castle, or a more challenging trek like Katsuudake are great for more active pups.

River hikes in northern Okinawa are constantly recommended but beware: cases of leptospirosis in dogs are on the rise, even among those that are fully vaccinated, as some strains aren't covered by the vaccine. We suggest erring on the side of caution and leaving your pups at home if you’re planning one of these adventures.

MIA COX

If you have a mild-tempered dog that likes to join in on the weekend brunch tradition and doesn’t mind the hustle and bustle, both American Village and the Sunabe Seawall are great areas to walk with your pup on a nice sunny day. They also offer a large variety of food options. Cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating are typically dog-friendly, but always ask!

If brunch with a view is what you’re looking for, The Calif Kitchen (featured on p. 51) in American Village has a lovely balcony with a view. Besides being incredibly child-friendly they are also dog-friendly! If you need a cup of coffee or are looking for hearty vegan/vegetarian options, Vongo & Anchor is a great spot with outdoor seating and a view. At Sunabe Seawall, Trip Café Harbor Okinawa is known for having Japan’s signature soufflé pancakes with a variety of delectable toppings, and their outdoor eating area is dog-friendly. Seaside Terrace also features a lovely outdoor patio and all the classic breakfast fixings you could need.

There are also quite a few tourist attractions around the island that allow leashed dogs to accompany you. Okinawa World, a theme park in Nanjo, is one of these places. Dogs are allowed to go everywhere but the sit-down restaurant and beer shop—even down to the caves! Just make sure they are able to walk down a long flight of stairs and will be okay using an escalator, as those are the only ways in and out of the cave.

Another theme park that also allows dogs is Murasaki Mura in Yomitan, and they just ask to keep them away from the food area; bookmark a visit for this year’s Lantern Festival. Bios no Oka in Ishikawa is a nature-themed park where dogs are allowed everywhere but the rides. Fukushuen Gardens, a tranquil Chinese garden in the middle of the city of Naha, is also dog-friendly.

A great indoor alternative for those hot or even rainy days are pet-friendly stores. Home improvement retailers Makeman and Cainz are both dog-friendly. Makeman allows dogs to walk around on leash or use their designated dog carts, while Cainz only allows dogs in their designated dog carts. Your doggies will surely enjoy riding around the store while you shop, especially through the pet section where they can choose from a variety of treats and toys to take home.

The most important part of adventuring with your pup is being prepared. You know your dog best, so tailor the activities you include them in that best suit their behavior and temperament. If they struggle with anxiety around people and/or other pets, maybe stick to car rides and secluded beaches. Make sure to bring their leash (and muzzle if necessary), a bowl and enough water for them to drink, dog booties if you’re headed to a coral sand beach or walking outside while the temperature is hhigh, and, of course, bags to pick up after them. Always clean up after your dog and take the waste with you if there are no trash cans around to help ensure others can enjoy the same facilities without worry.

Okonomiyaki

Originating in Osaka, the word “okonomiyaki” basically means “what you like, grilled.” Although there are as many recipes as there are chefs that make okonomiyaki, the following is a basic version that includes many of the more popular ingredients.

3. Heat vegetable oil in a large pan.

4. Pour the mixture into the pan in the shape of a pancake.

5. Cook until underside is golden brown; flip over.

8. Continue cooking until the underside is golden brown.

9. Sprinkle with green laver and bonito flakes and serve.

Shīmī

During the month of April, many new to the island might see a perplexing sight—families gathering at tombs for what appears to be picnics. And while the number of people gathering at graves during this time of year is frequently large, this doesn’t necessarily mean that these locales are the Okinawan picnic site of choice. These families are gathered for Shīmī—an annual ceremonial visit to the family ancestral tomb. Although formally held on Higan, or the spring equinox (April 7 this year according to the lunar calendar), Shīmī is often held on an April weekend convenient for all members of the extended family.

Unlike those found in mainland Japan, Okinawan tombs are strongly influenced by Chinese counterparts. These tombs, which are mostly above ground, tend to be a lot larger because urns containing the cremated remains of all of the kindred from the father’s side of the family are placed inside. Tombs also include an open (and sometimes covered) area in front, so that the entire clan can gather.

On the day of Shīmī, after cleaning up the surrounding area, blankets or tarps (depending on weather) are laid on the open space in front of the tomb. Sweets, fruits and gochisō (a traditional feast inside ceremonial containers called jyūbako) are brought from each family. Although the variety of food inside the jyūbako varies from family to

family, they always come in odd-numbered quantities as even numbers are inauspicious (these rules also vary depending on which part of Okinawa the clan originates). After placing the feast in front of the ancestors’ tomb and “praying” for them, the “tomb picnic” begins, when families enjoy food, drink and conversation with living relatives. 
