Bison high on pre-season expectations FALL SPORTS 2011

The Nebraska state high school Class B football ranks pretty much pencil in the McCook Bison in the post-season playoff bracket each year. The Bison had what many McCook faithful probably thought was a down year in 2010 with an 8-3 season record. But head coach Jeff Gross watched his team qualify for the playoffs a 10th straight year, and 19 of the last 20. This season, pre-season expectations are again flying high in the southwest Nebraska football hub. The Bison have a host of talented players returning from last year, and several of the state’s publications have McCook ranked among the state’s top Class B teams to start the year. McCook has been one of the dominant teams in the state’s Class B ranks in the past decade. The Bison have won 114 games against just 17 losses total since 2000, with two state championships, three state playoff runner-up finishes and eight district titles. This year’s team boasts eight returning players with starting experience, with a core group of 14 seniors and 20 juniors developing and waiting for their turn to lead the storied Bison program. For McCook to keep its state playoff run alive, the Bison will have to manage a stern schedule featuring five playoff teams from last season, and a rugged first half with three long road trips. McCook opens the year Friday, Aug. 26 with a long trip to Scottsbluff, followed by a grudge match at home Sept. 2 against Aurora, then two more trips to the panhandle to meet Alliance Sept. 9 and Gering Sept. 16. After beating Aurora six straight times from 2001-2008, the Bison have since lost five straight times to the Huskies in the regular season and playoffs. With the three road trips, the McCook squad will put on about 1,600 miles in the first four weeks of the

season. Head coach Jeff Gross said if anyone wants to trade for these road trips, please call. After homes games against Grand Island Northwest and Sidney, the Bison finish with their three district opponents, Adams Central at home and Lexington and Holdrege on the road. McCook lost to Holdrege in 2010 – the first loss to the Dusters since 1996, a string of 15 straight wins for the Bison. Getting back on the right side of that matchup is a priority for the Bison, according to Coach Gross. Strong defense The Bison return four defensive starters for veteran defensive coaches Russ Schlager and John Gumb. The line is anchored by senior Clint Beguin (6-2, 240 pounds) and

junior Mitch Collicott (6-0, 265), both returning starters. Junior Jake Schlager (6-1, 180) returns at linebacker where he recorded 76 total tackles last season and 12 stops for losses, plus two interceptions, two forced fumbles and six sacks. Senior Matt Chitwood (6-3, 175) moves from safety to cornerback this fall to anchor the Bison secondary. Senior Justin Terry (6-1, 220) started at fullback last season, but Terry will be counted on at linebacker also this season. Other players to figure prominently in McCook’s defensive plans will be senior linemen Nick Roberts and Will Burkert, junior end Matt Collicott, senior linebacker Austen Sis, Seniors Alex Broadfoot and Tyson Karr and juniors Austin Cherry, Zayne Gillen and Cody

Wudtke will also be key players in the secondary. Sophomore Kolton Stone also made a push for playing time at inside linebacker, and seniors Spencer Bruntz and Shane Buck plus juniors Javier Beltran, Cade Hiatt and Kyle Stewart will contribute at outside linebacker. n behind some great players the last few years. Collicott has great strength and plays with a good motor. He has all the tools, and Burkert has worked hard to develop some unbelievable technique. Sophomores Kolton Stone will push for playing time. This group will play with high motors and get after opponents. Gavin Harsh, a junior was a key ingredient at linebacker, but he suffered an achilles tendon injury and appears to be out for the season.

Potent offense The Bison offense has a strong veteran flavor with four returning starters and four others that played significant back-up roles in 2010. Coach Gross is looking to use a strong arsenal of weapons to hit some big plays in both the running and passing games. “Athletes – very good athletes at every skill position will be the strength,” Gross said. Chitwood returns at quarterback, matching talent with a year’s experience as a starter. Chitwood rushed for 370 yards and six touchdowns last season. Austin Cherry will back up Chitwood, and Cherry will also be used at running back and receiver. Behind Chitwood, Terry at fullback and Schlager at running back should provide plenty of headaches for Bison opposition. Terry ran for 700 yards starting last season, and Schlager used his speed to gain 250 rushing yards on just 30 carries in limited duty. Schlager should be the featured back this year, and his combination of size and speed could prove deadly. Chitwood will have plenty of targets, with Cherry, Gillen, Wudtke, Broadfoot, Karr, Beltran at wideouts, plus Matt Collicott and Spencer Bruntz at tight end, and Manny Rodriguez also in the mix. Gleason and Mitch Collicott return as starters at guard, while Spencer Skolout, Beguin and Burkert all playing in back-up roles on the offensive line last year. Tackles Nick Alberts, Daniel Best and McConnell will provide depth, and Austen Sis moves from fullback to start at center. Special teams Special teams will be just that for the Bison. Chitwood has been booming kickoffs and extra points in preseason workouts, and Matt Collicott doing the same punting. Schlager and Cherry are expected to be the leading candidates for kick and punt return duty.

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska – The Arapahoe Warriors are looking to fill some big shoes from their strong 2010 Class D-1 (Eight-man) playoff squad. The Warriors lost in the second round of the D-1 state playoffs last year and finished with a 5-5 overall record. Dustin Sealey takes over as head coach of the Arapahoe program. Sealey will need to replace a host of talented seniors from last season's team. "We're looking to replace a large senior class," Sealey said. "We must continue working hard and do the little things."

ARAPAHOE FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

Sealey has five returning lettermen from last season, led by senior Brad Loghry, a 6-0, 170pound back. Gage Schutz, a 6-2, 180-pound senior end, is fast and aggressive, according to Coach Sealey. Patrick Gardner (5-8, 160) is a quick, aggressive back, according to his coach. The Arapahoe line is anchored by seniors Trev Haussler (6-1, 205) and Justin Stagemeyer (6-1, 200). Two non-lettermen expected to make a big contribution for the Warriors this fall include Ryan Gardner (5-10, 165) and Wyatt Anderson (5-10, 170). Arapahoe will compete in the Class D1-9 District along with Gazette area rival Southwest, plus Alma, Elm Creek, Elwood and Overton.

Division I recruit Shoff expected to lead Cambridge charge to playoffs STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska – The Cambridge Trojans will hook their football plow behind a big horse in 2011. Senior Mike Shoff, a 6-6, 290-pound lineman, is drawing Division I interest across the country. Shoff played in just two games last year after suffering a knee injury in the spring of 2010. "Mike has the potential to be an outstanding football player this year and beyond," said Cambridge head coach Josh Graves. "His physical tools are very rare and I look forward to seeing him mature as a player this season." The Trojans are loaded with basically the entire squad returning except 2010 All-Stater and Shrine Bowl participant Gus Petersen. Running back Ethan Long (5-10, 165) ran for nearly 1,400 yards last fall as Cambridge reached the Class C2 playoff quarterfinals.

Maywood football looking to improve STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

MAYWOOD, Nebraska – Maywood High School hopes to improve its six-man football fortunes this fall. The Tigers went 2-6 overall last year, but head coach Charles Jones hopes to field a more competitive team in 2011. "We have strong numbers and five starters on both sides of the ball back," Jones said. "If we can stay healthy, then we will be competitive."

The returning letter winner list is headed by a handful of seniors, including Will Moore (5-10, 140), Steffan Peterson (5-10, 145), Spencer Dickinson (6-0, 200), Todd Hansen (6-0, 135) and Brandon Doxon (6-0, 140). Juniors Aaron Doxon (61, 140) and Justin Strobel (5-9, 145) also lettered last season, as did sophomore Jacob Dibbern (5-9, 130). Maywood and Hitchcock County will square off in the regular-season battle of Gazette six-man squads Friday, Sept. 9.

Five starters back for Chase County this season STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

IMPERIAL, Nebraska – The Chase County High School football team will be experienced but young this fall. Veteran head coach Dan Lenners has a long list of returning letter winners from the team that qualified for the Class C-2 state playoffs in 2010. But the Longhorns played a long list of sophomores last year, as only four seniors are included on this fall's roster. Coach Lenners has just five returning starters from the team that went 4-5 last year. The starters include seniors Steven Fish and Brady Mays, and juniors Kale Gockley, Michael May and Brian Bell. The long list of other returning lettermen include seniors Jared Knobbe and Adam Dickey, juniors Hunter Spady, Justin German, Spencer Hartman, Ethan Haarberg and Callin Ledall, plus sophomores David Almanoza, Trey Milner, Dan Sullivan and Justin Wallin. Despite the long list of returning lettermen, Coach Lenners said depth will be a concern.

The Raiders want to earn a berth in the Class D-2 (Eight-man) state playoffs and go one better than last year's team and win a first-round contest. Med Valley dropped a 26-0 decision to Loomis in last year's D-2 state playoffs first round to end the year with a 54 record. Head coach Scott Johnsen has a solid core of six returning starters to build this year's team around. BENKELMAN, Nebraska – There's a little buzz in the 2011 Dundy County-Stratton football camp. The Tigers are coming off a 1-7 campaign last fall, but nearly the entire team is back, giving head coach JC Stroup a solid foundation for the coming season. 'We are very excited for the upcoming season," Coach Stroup said. “We return almost everybody since we graduated just three seniors last year. We have a lot of kids with a lot of playing experience. We also have great leadership and are looking forward to that paying off." Four starters are back in the DCS lineup. Senior quarterback Chris Rotherham (60, 175) and senior running back Paul Downey (5-8, 165) should be key members of the Tigers offensive attack. The line will be anchored by senior Taylor Jensen (6-5, 260) and junior JJ Johnson (6-2, 260). Dundy County-Stratton will compete in the Class C2-9 District with Gazette area powerhouse Cambridge plus Hershey, North Platte St. Pat's and Sutherland.

OXFORD, Nebraska – The Southern Valley Eagles will rely on a wealth of experienced players to try and improve football fortunes this fall. The Eagles went 1-7 last year, but head coach Jeremy Epp has plenty of experience returning with nine defensive and seven offensive starters coming back. Two team leaders will be Dexter Becker and Lucas Robison. Becker is a 6-3, 210-pound senior linebacker who accumulated 110 tackle points in 2010 and earned his third letter for the Eagles. Robison is a 5-10, 210-pound lineman who has also lettered three times. Another senior standout for Southern Valley will be lineman Dillon Noel (5-9, 200), also a three-year lettermen entering his final prep season. EUSTIS, Nebraska – The football cupboard at EustisFarnam High School took a big hit last year, but it isn't bare. The Knights made a run to the Class D-2 (Eight-man) playoff quarterfinals before Sargent ended E-F's hopes. The team was loaded with a strong senior class a year ago, and just one starter is back this season in lineman Shane Robbins (6-1, 240). But many large victory margins last year helped the Knights get many juniors and sophomores valuable varsity experience. Other returning letter winners include linemen Jon Earwood and Garhett Nielsen, backs Dustin Koch, Jordan Wetovick and Hunter Ringenburg, plus end Tyler Green. E-F has a new head coach

this year. Paul Pistulka will operate his first season as a head coach after working as an assistant at two high-profile Nebraska high school programs in Omaha Creighton Prep and Lincoln Pius X. Pistulka thinks his experience at the bigger schools will help him in his new position and help him mold the Knights into a solid team and solid players now and after their prep careers are completed. Pistulka feels his Knights can be among the top half of the Class D2-9 District field. The district is loaded with Gazette area teams, including Medicine Valley, Hayes Center and Wauneta-Palisade, plus Brady and Wallace. The new E-F head coach sees Brady and Med Valley as favored teams in the district. The Knights open the 2011 season at home Sept. 2 against Elwood.

TRENTON, Nebraska – Déjà vu may be the phrase of the year for the 2011 Hitchcock County High School football program. The Falcons had a solid year in the state's six-man ranks in 2010, finishing with a 7-2 record and advancing to the state playoff semifinals. Head coach Jarod Albers has a long list of veterans returning, fueling hopes for another strong campaign. "The bar has been set pretty high after a great 2010 season," Albers said. "We return some key talented players, and if our younger talent can step up to the plate, we look to have another successful year." Three key players for the Falcons are seniors in back Cale Brown (5-7, 160), lineman Alex Pollmann (6-2, 260) and back Gabe Ware (5-9, 145). OBERLIN, Kansas – Decatur Community High School is hoping to improve on last year's three-win football season. The Red Devils compete in Class 2A in the Kansas high school ranks. Head coach J.D. Johnson will field a relatively young squad this fall, with just five seniors listed on the early-season roster. "We've been playing a lot of younger kids," Johnson said. "But the kids have worked extremely hard in the off-season and are very enthused about this season." The returning veterans are

BARTLEY, Nebraska – Aggressive play will hopefully make up for a lack of size for a successful 2011 Southwest High School football campaign. The Roughriders advanced to the Class D-1 (eight-man) state playoffs last fall and dropped a wild 60-50 decision to Elgin/Pope John in first-round action. Southwest ended the season with a 4-5 overall record.

Several key players graduated last year, but head coach Les Roggenkamp still has a wealth of experience players coming back. "We're a smaller, quicker team than in years past," Roggenkamp said. "We will need to be very aggressive on defense to make up for a lack of size. We will throw more on offense and will utilize quicker linemen to pull into spaces. We will work hard to be competitive." Three all-district performers return in seniors Tanner Teel (5-10, 165), Sam Osterman (5-10, 165) and Tommy Slater

(5-10, 165). Seniors Zach Herrman (5-9, 160) and Zach Riley (6-0, 150) also return along with juniors Devin Sughroue (6-0, 180), Dylan McConville (5-10, 185) and Justin Daffer (6-2, 180). Seniors Michael Brodd (6-0, 160) and Chase Downey (5-11, 180), plus sophomore Andrew Conway (6-2, 180) will likely also be key contributors. Southwest and Gazette area rival Arapahoe are in the Class D1-9 District along with Alma, Elm Creek, Elwood and Overton.

WAUNETA, Nebraska – Wauneta-Palisade is looking for a better football team in 2011 with a fresh start at the top of the roster. Justin Bernhardt takes over as head coach of the Broncos this fall in his first year of coaching. Bernhardt inherits a team that won just one game in 2010, but W-P has a strong group of seven returning letter winners. The new W-P head coach said the team will rely on the leadership from a senior trio including Bo Fanning (5-9, 180), Reese West (5-8, 160) and Keagan Haarberg (5-11, 190). Junior letter winners include Logan Bischoff (6-1, 190) and Weylin Davis (5-9, 150), and two sophomore vets return in Wes Anderjaska (5-10, 150) and Hayden Pollmann (6-0, 175). The Broncos also inherit Connor Kayton (5-10, 170), a transfer from Holdrege. Bernhardt said it's been a learning process for him and his team, learning new schemes from a new head coach, and also adjusting to Class D-2 (Eight-man) football for him. "It it hard for me coming from college ball to get a gauge on not only where we are at, but also the rest of D-2 football," Bernhardt said. "However, we may be short on numbers but we have great hard-working kids, so we are excited to see where measure up."

In high school sports, experience is a valuable commodity. The McCook High School volleyball team is hoping a wealth of returning letter winners will spell dividends on the court this fall. Head coach Krystal Weber begins her ninth year as head of the Bison program. Coach Weber has a long list of players returning who saw extensive varsity experience last season. With all that experience, note that the Bison have just one senior on the veteran list. Very little experience last year “We were an extremely young team last season with very little experience,” Weber said. “We lost only one regular starter from last year’s team to graduation, so we will be returning many kids with a lot of varsity playing time from last season. “We will still be quite young, with only one of our returning letter winners in the senior class. However, because we have so many kids returning with the potential to contribute at the varsity level, we anticipate having a lot of competition for varsity positions when the season begins.” The Bison will aim to improve last year’s 430 varsity season record. The lone senior veteran is Amanda Fuchuck, a 5-8 outside hitter. Weber has six junior letter winners returning, anchored by three players with two years of varsity experience. Brooklynn Trew is a 5-7 setter, Sydney Clapp is a 5-8 outside hitter and Kassidy Gillen is a 5-10 middle hitter. The other junior vets include 5-8 outside hitter Riley Allen, 5-9 middle/outside hitter Rachel Goltl and 5-10 middle hitter Miranda Holliday. Players battle for varsity playing time Several other players will be in the battle for varsity playing time, including juniors Hollie Eiler (5-5 libero) and Khyla Krepcik (5-8 rightside hitter). Sophomores in the mix include 5-5 libero Brenleigh Daum, 5-9 middle hitter Danica Liess and 5-11 middle hitter Kira Johnson. Johnson transfearred last year from Dundy CountyStratton. Coach Weber said many of her hitters are versatile and can play several positions, giving prime targets for Trew’s sets. “We will have the flexibility of moving our hitters to a position that will help us the most, as many of them can play multiple positions,” Weber said. The Bison head coach is looking for a more consistent effort this fall.

Athletic Conference, with the GNAC meet scheduled Oct. 29 at North Platte. The Bison will battle for a state meet ticket at the Class B-6 District meet at the Ogallala Auditorium Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1. McCook, host Ogallala Alliance, Gering, Scottsbluff and Sidney will comprise the B-6 District field.

A highlight of the season will be the McCook Invitational at the Senior High gym Saturday, Sept. 17. The Bison will also have a tough test with next-door neighbor Southwest on the McCook home court Tuesday, Oct. 11. Another Gazette area team, Chase County, comes to McCook to meet the Bison Tuesday, Oct. 25.

ARAPAHOE, Nebraska — Teamwork and experience will be keys to success for the 2011 Arapahoe High School volleyball team. The Warriors will look to improve on last year's 11-14 record and runner-up finish in sub-district tournament play. Katie Wenz takes over at head of the Arapahoe program. Wenz inherits four returning veterans, led by 5-3 senior Ashley McCoy, plus juniors Alyssa Downey (5-5), Melinda Eichenburger (5-4) and Alexa Whipple (5-4). Seniors Jess Jording and Rachel Koller, junior Rylee Miller, sophomore Hannah Hanke and Carley Polston, plus freshman Kaylea Watson are other players likely to vie

for varsity playing time. Coach Wenz said the Warriors have focused on development of fundamentals and defense in early-season drills. "This year's team should show strong improvements and be a challenge on the court," Wenz said. "Returning letter winner's experience will be crucial on the court, especially from Alyssa Downey. Playing together as a team will make this season very successful." Arapahoe will enter the Class D1-10 Sub-District Tournament Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Southern Valley High School, with Gazette area rivals Cambridge and Hitchcock County plus Elwood and Overton. Also on the schedule is the annual Republican Plains Activities Conference (RPAC) meet in mid-October.

CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska – Competitive practices during the opening days of the new year will hopefully hone the Cambridge girls volleyball team into a competitive unit as the season progresses. Head coach Katie VanWesten has just four returning letter winners from last year's group that went 13-15 overall and lost in the sub-district tournament finals. Brooke Juhl, a 5-5 senior, recorded 96 kills, 23 blocks and 59 digs last season. Senior Tori

Garcia had 38 aces, 15 kills and 216 defensive digs, and fellow senior Breezy Huxoll leads the returning vets with 441 digs. Garcia and Huxoll both stand 5 feet 6 inches tall. Jordin Wasson, a 5-8 junior also lettered last fall. Coach VanWesten said sophomore Rachelle Carpenter and freshman Sloan Johnson are two promising newcomers. The Cambridge coach expects tough competition all season, but she feels if the team continues to focus and improve passing and defense, the Trojans can have a

successful season. "We have very little returning experience and a number of girls competing for starting positions," she said. "So there is a lot of competition in practice. Hopefully we will find the right mix early on. We will have a lot of different players contributing." Cambridge will compete with Arapahoe, Hitchcock County, Elwood and Overton in the Class D1-10 Sub-District at Southern Valley High School Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The Trojans also will enter the Republican Plains Activities Tournament in mid-October.

Chase County taking the 2011 volleyball season ‘one day at a time’ STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

IMPERIAL, Nebraska – It's one day at a time for the 2011 Chase County High School volleyball program. Head coach Jodie Schuller has six returning letter winners, and she is pleased with her team's effort in pre-season drills. "So far, a great effort in practice," Schuller said. "We'll just take it one day at a time." Three seniors return for the Longhorns, including Shannon Liewer, Chantal Heathers and Shayla Dinnel. Junior Bethany Sorensen is another letter winner back, along with sophomores Kristen Jussel and Bridget Langin. Schuller expects Mindy Castle, MaKenna Ketter, Paige Spady and Aubrey Fisher to compete for playing time. The Longhorns, members of the South Platte Valley Association, finished last season with a 15-13 record. Chase County will enter the Class C1-11 Sub-District Tournament Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at North Platte High School. Other schools in the sub-district include Cozad, Gothenburg, Hershey and Ogallala.

CURTIS, Nebraska – The Medicine Valley High School volleyball squad will be relatively young this fall, but head coach Teresa Ruppert has a long list of returning letter winners. The Raiders finished the 2010 season with a 5-16 overall record. Coach Ruppert has seven letter winners back, but no seniors included in that group. The veterans are anchored by returning starters Taylor Sandoe, a 5-10 junior, and 5-6 sophomore Shaylee Schroeder. Med Valley will have a big mark at the net in 6-1 juniors Sierra Schmidt. Other letter winners back include a trio of sophomores in 5-3 Kylee Heinzle, 5-6 Regan Garey and 5-6 Starla Henderson. Rupeprt has a host of freshmen who could also contribute, including Grayce Jorgenson, Kayla Wiles, Kathryn Schick, Andie Chapman, Matti Nickelsen and Amanda Peterson. "We are working very hard and are looking forward to a new season," Coach Ruppert said. "We have some experience returning but will still be young." The Raiders have just one senior, McKenzie Pyzer, listed on the pre-season roster. In addition to the Republican Plains Activities Conference Tournament, Medicine Valley will enter the Class D2-10 Sub-District Tournament Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Perkins County High School in Grant. Other teams in the sub-district include Hayes Center, Maywood, Wauneta-Palisade and Wallace.

BENKELMAN, Nebraska – An interesting girls volleyball season is on tap for the Dundy County-Stratton High School squad. The Tigers compiled a 15-9 record last season, losing to Perkins County (Grant) in sub-district tournament play. DCS finished fourth in the always-competitive Republican Plains Activities Conference. Head coach Stephanie Williams said good-bye to several standout seniors from last year's team, but she has a solid cast of returning veterans. "We graduated a lot of experience and talent last season, which is always hard to replace," Williams said. "But this year's team has a great attitude and have worked really hard. "We have more depth than we've had since I've been here and I think these girls will push each other to keep playing as hard as they can.”

HAYES CENTER, Nebraska – There's really nowhere to go but up for the 2011 Hayes Center volleyball team. The Cardinals finished last season with a 3-22 record. First-year head coach Rachel Peter has a strong group of returning players, fueling hopes for a stronger and more successful campaign. "We're returning a lot of height and experience this year," Coach Peter said. "This senior class is proving to be great leaders and our freshman class has a lot of talent. All that together should mix to be a great season." The leading veterans are seniors Halsie Large, Haley Tyan, Annie Deaver and Larissa. ATWOOD, Kansas – The Rawlins County High School volleyball team is looking for improvement on the court this season. The Buffaloes went 12-18 last fall, with tall hopes to improve that mark this year. The Atwood team is centered around 6-2 senior Hillary Chvatal, an All-Northwest Kansas League performer the past two seasons. Other returning letter winners include a pair of seniors, Abbey Wolters and Summer Castens. Head coach Jenni Sramek listed sophomores Brooke Paslay and Katie Withington as promising players. "We have made huge improvements since last season and have more offensive options this season," Coach Sramek said. The Buffaloes open the season with three home triangular meets on Aug. 30, Sept. 1 and Sept. 10.

TRENTON, Nebraska – A talented roster of returning players from a successful team a year ago will have hopes soaring at Hitchcock County High School for another strong volleyball team this fall. The Falcons went 23-6 last season, with four of those losses coming to Wallace and Dundy County-Stratton. Wallace advanced to the Class D-2 state tournament unbeaten but lost to Dodge in firstround state tourney play. "This is a great group of girls with tons of talent," said Hitchcock County head coach

Jennifer Baker. "We are looking to have a very successful year. The Falcons move to Class D-1 this season in volleyball. OBERLIN, Kansas – Another strong volleyball team is in the works at Decatur Community High School in Oberlin, Kansas. The Red Devils lost in the Kansas Class 2A State Tournament finals last fall, and Decatur Community ended the year with a stellar 35-4 record. Southwest’s volleyball squad looks like a contender – again STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

BARTLEY, Nebraska – It's probably a sure bet that the Southwest High School volleyball team will be strong again in 2011. The Roughriders finished fourth at the Class C-2 state meet last year, ending the year with a 26-7 record. Veteran head coach Dennis Troester lost just two players from the 2010 squad, and he has a wealth of talent returning. "We need to find a replacement for the setting position and replace an all-state left-side hitter," Coach Troester said. "If our passing improves, we look to be a very strong team by the end of the season. "We had many young players who played for us last season and we look for them to step in and fill key positions both offensively and defensively."

Two strong seniors will likely play key roles again this year. Allie McConville (5-10) had 311 kills and 34 blocks last season while earning All-Republican Plains Activities Conference honors. Madison Mousel (6-0) was an honorable mention all-RPAC selection last year as she had 196 kills and 67 blocks. Lauren Ruggles, 5-7 junior, contributed 102 kills last season. Seniors Kourtney McConville (5-6), Amber Daffer (5-8) and Jessica Poeter (5-6) also lettered last year, as did Shelby Malleck, Kaleigh Potthoff, Abby Daffer, Kenzie May and Makayla Brooks. The Roughriders will battle in the tough RPAC Tournament Oct. 17-18. Southwest will enter the Class C2-11 Sub-District Tournament at Bertrand Oct. 31-Nov. 1 along with Southern Valley, Alma, Elm Creek and North Platte St. Pat's.

WAUNETA, Nebraska – This year might be labeled as a rebuilding year for the Wauneta-Palisade High School volleyball program. The Broncos have just three returning letter winners from last year's team that finished with an 8-15 overall record. The 2011 McCook High School girls golf team should be among the best in the Class B state ranks this fall. The Bison girls have four players returning from the 2010 edition that finished third at the Class B State Championships at Grand Islandʼs Indianhead Golf Course. The four returning state meet vets include, clockwise from top left, Megan Rokusek, Megan Vetrovsky, Taylor Hanson and Kaylee Samway. All four McCook girls finished in the top 30 individual standings at state. The Bison will take aim at another strong finish at the state meet next October at Grand Islandʼs Riverside Golf Course.

The mantra is probably inscribed somewhere inside McCook High School girls softball head coach Jason Cochran’s home. “To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.” Any media personnel dealing with the Bison coach knows they will hear that phrase at one time or another. Cochran purposefully schedules the toughest competition he can find for his Bison girls each season. His philosophy is to help make the district tournament competition pale in comparison to the tough tests in the regular season. “My philosophy is, ‘To be the best you’ve got to beat the best,’ and so to beat the best you have to play the best,” Cochran said an interview early in fall camp drills. “We definitely have made the schedule as tough as we can. We do go out and see the best teams in the state (during the regular season). Tough schedule “We made the tough schedule and we want the tough schedule. We’ll get to where we want to go. We’re young, and it’s going to take time. As long as we continue to compete every day and get better every day, districts will be a piece of cake by the time we get there.” McCook went to Hastings Monday, Aug. 23 to meet Norris and Beatrice, two of the best Class B teams from the eastern side of the Cornhusker State. Although the young Bison lost both games by lopsided scores, Cochran hopes those

Last year, the Bison won 18 of 29 games. “We lost seven starters – we are very young but very talented,” Cochran said. That “play the best” philosophy will be put to the test in 2011. The Bison have no seniors on the roster

after losing a host of solid fourth-year players from last year’s squad that came within a couple runs of winning a district title. Three returning starters Cochran listed three returning starters back this season, led by junior catcher/infielder Megan Ruppert. Ruppert had a .369 batting average last season with 19 runs batted in.

Versatile junior Madison Chitwood hit .312 last year, including 10 RBI. Chitwood can play several positions in the infield and outfield. Brittany Broomfield, another junior, knocked in 18 runs and hit .217 last fall. The Bison pitching duties will be manned by sophomores Maddie Elder and Alli Sheets, both seeing limited varsity duty last season.

Other players expected to be regular varsity players this year include juniors Rachel Leitner and Marisa Esch, plus sophomores Nichelle Funk, Sam Kalinski, Cassa Broomfield and Becca Sehnert. After competing in the Holdrege Invite Aug. 27, the Bison girls will host the McCook Invitational Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Jaycees Sports Complex. Seven other teams will join McCook in the day-long tournament over the Labor Day Holiday. Bison face Class A teams McCook will face several Class A teams, including home dates with North Platte Tuesday, Sept. 20, and Kearney Thursday, Sept. 29. The Bison also will see three tough Class A foes at the Southeast Classic in Lincoln Saturday, Sept. 24. Half the field in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament at North Platte Saturday, Oct. 1., will be Class A squads. Cochran said he has a deep, talented roster despite no seniors in the lineup. “It’s tough, but we are extremely athletic and we are extremely deep,” he said. “Even though we don’t have any seniors, we have three solid classes that are very good classes. If we take care of business we should be very good this year.” The Bison girls hope to punch a ticket to state in the Class B-4 District meet at Lexington Oct. 6-7. McCook and the host Minutemaids will battle with Allliance, Cozad, Gering and Scottsbluff for a berth in the Class B State Girls Softball Championships Oct. 12-14 at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings.

Bison cross country teams rely on tradition

This fall might mark a little changing of the guard for the McCook High School crosscountry squads. The Bison girls have traditionally been a strong team, while the McCook boys have not matched the girls’ team overall success. But Coach Tom Sughroue is looking for a much stronger boys edition this year, and the McCook girls will be a veteran team despite losing two of the state’s top distance runners the past four years. It was probably strange for Bison crosscountry coach Tom Sughroue to not see Jessa Sughroue and Kelsea Geschwentner at earlyseason workouts when the team started official practices Aug. 15. The Bison standouts graduated last spring, ending two of the strongest middle-distance and distance running careers in McCook High School history. Geschwentner placed 18th overall at last year’s Class B state cross-country meet, and Sughroue was close behind in 21st place. They led McCook to a fourth-place finish in the final team standings. ‘I think we’re probably going to be down a little bit on the girls side,” Coach Sughroue said. “We’re still going to be a very competitive team. You’re talking about replacing the seniors we had last year, but it still early, you’ll never know how our underclassmen will step up to that. Hopefully they’ll step up and fill those voids a little bit. We have the potential to

do that.” The Bison girls have four state meet veterans coming back this fall, led by seniors Emilyne Nichols and Emily Tolliver. Junior Veronica Bair also returns, along with sophomore Molly Sughroue. Those four returning letter winners will be the core of the McCook girls team this season. McCook also finished second behind Scottsbluff in Class B District competition last season.

Boys team improving Last year, the Bison boys did something they had not done in recent years – sent a representative to state in then-senior Jon Solorzano. The Bison boys have shown improvement in the past few years, and coach Sughroue is hoping that will continue. “I think we’re going to be a lot better team that we were a year ago,” Sughroue said. “We have continued to get better over the last two years, and I see us only improving on that this year. McCook has six letter winners returning on the boys team, including a trio of seniors in Brian Calvin, Jake Fahrenbruch and Kyle Gaston, plus underclassmen Trevor Pate, Hunter Felker and Austin Lambing. Pate broke through with one of the fastest 1,600-meter run times in McCook track and field history last spring at the Class B state meet. Sughroue hopes Pate’s momentum carries over through the fall.

CAMBRIDGE, Nebraska – It shouldn't be too hard to keep track of Cambridge High School runners in cross-country competition this fall. The Trojans have just one male and one female runner competing this season for Coach Janice Howell. Seth Cope lettered on the boys team last year, as did Kilah Deaver on the girls squad. "We have a very small team this year so we are working on building a junior high team that will hopefully continue into high schooll," Coach Howell said. Cambridge will host the Republican Plains Activities Conference (RPAC) meet Oct. 6.

MAYWOOD, Nebraska – The Maywood High School crosscountry teams are looking for strong senior performances in 2011 and a quick recovery for a sophomore standout. The Tigers have two veterans returning for each team. The boys are led by senior Tyler Bollish and sophomore Quinton Phillips, while the girls are paced by senior Taylor Stone and sophomore Justine Stone. "Taylor and Tyler are seniors who have had good summers training-wise and hope to improve on their own personal performances," said Maywood coach Thompson Herman. Justine Stone finished 23rd at the Class D state girls crosscountry meet last October. But the talented sophomore is not 100 percent healthy, and coach Herman said he isn't sure when or if she will run this fall. After the Republican Plains Activities Conference meet at Cambridge Oct. 6, the Tigers will compete in Class D Districts at a site yet to be determined.

IMPERIAL, Nebraska – Experience should fuel hopes for a strong Chase County High School girls cross-country team this season. The Longhorns have four letter winners returning from last year's team. Coach Carl Zuege is looking for sophomores Emma Engbrecht and Mallory Coleman. Zuege also is looking for seniors Devon Vaverek and Breanna Krutsinger to have strong years in their final high school campaigns. "Our girls return four letter winners from last season and we look to be much improved," Coach Zuege said. EUSTIS, Nebraska – The Eustis-Farnam cross-country teams should be competitive in both boys and girls divisions this fall. The E-F teams have been joining Medicine Valley from Curtis in a co-op team for crosscountry since 1999, and the two schools will do the same again this fall. On the girls side, the Knights return 2010 state qualifier Bryn Bellamy, a junior who qualified for state as a freshman but battled injuries last fall. Sophomore McKenna Rieker also lettered last fall. On the boys side, E-F has three lettermen returning, led by seniors David Nutt and

Jacob Brennemann, and sophomore Connor Russell. Veteran coach Elroy W. Pierce also welcomes junior Tanner Mickelsen, a transfer from Wisconsin. Coach Pierce said he hopes to have a strong girls team in the Class D ranks, although the Knights will compete against mostly Class D and B schools throughout the season. "Returning letter winners will need to step up, as this is a younger squad than the last two years," Pierce said. "Success of the team will depend on if some of the athletes can avoid injuries." On the boys side, Pierce expects a competitive E-F team. Half of the Knights eight total boys squad members are freshmen.

OBERLIN, Kansas – Youth will be served on this year's Decatur Community High School girls cross-country team. Long-time coach Dick Ahlberg has just five girls on the roster, but no seniors or juniors. Ahlberg has a pair of letter winners in sophomores Emma Borton and Kayla Jones. Young Dundy County-Stratton girls will need to step up, says coach STEVE KODAD GAZETTE SPORTS EDITOR

BENKELMAN, Nebraska – The Dundy County-Stratton girls cross-country team will be a youthful group for head coach Scott Lambley in 2011. The Tigers lost a host of standout performers to graduation from last year's squad. "We will have a fairly young and inexperienced team," Lambley said. "With graduating so many last year, we've got some pretty young ladies being forced to step up and take on the leadership roles. We will probably see a huge difference in this team

"This should be a big learning experience, even amongst the underclassmen that are assuming the leadership roles." step up and fill those voids a little bit.” Geschwentner and Sughroue will both run in college this year. The McCook runner open the 2011 season Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Cozad Invitational. The Bison will host the McCook Invitational Thursday, Sept. 15, at the challenging and hilly Heritage Hills Golf Course on the west edge of the city. McCook will also have the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference meet in the backyard. The GNAC meet is scheduled Friday, Oct. 7 at North Platte, followed by the Class B-4 District meet Thursday, Oct. 13 at the West Winds Golf Course in Ogallala. The Bison will compete with boys and girls teams from Alliance, Gering, Hastings, Holdrege, Lexington, Grand Island Northwest and Scottsbluff for berths at the Class B State CrossCountry Championships at Kearney Friday, Oct. 21.

OBERLIN, Kansas – The Decatur Community High School boys cross-country team should field another strong edition in 2011. Veteran head coach Dick Ahlberg has a host of lettermen returning from a team that won the Northwest Kansas League title a year ago and also qualified for the 2010 Kansas Class 2A state meet. Coach Ahlberg has three seniors to build the team around. Dalton Jones and Tyler Shields have each lettered three years, while Nolan Henningson is a two-year letter winner for the Oberlin squad. Other letter winners include junior Matthew Helm and sophomore Caleb Koerperich. The Oberlin boys will try to earn a return trip to state at Kansas Class 2A Regional action Oct. 22 (site to be determined). The Kansas Class 2A state meet is set for Oct. 29 at Wamego.

BENKELMAN, Nebraska – A veteran group of runners should provide Dundy CountyStratton with a strong boys cross-country team this season. The Tigers finished eighth at the 2010 Class D state meet, and four DCS runners return with state meet experience. "This group is loaded with experience and many have shown leadership both here

and in other sports," said DCS coach Scott Lambley. "Four returning varsity regulars and one that saw occasional varsity action last year return, and several greenhorns see to be fighting for that sixth spot. "We have a feeling that we will see some change-up throughout the season regarding placing, front six. The McCook High School girls golf team entered the 2011 fall season with high expectations. If the results of the season-opening competition are any indication, the Bison girls could again be among the state’s best Class B squads. Bison end Scottsbluff streak The McCook girls opened the season by winning the championship at the Sidney Invitational Tuesday, Aug. 23. In the process, the Bison ended a string of 32 straight high school golf tournament titles won by Scottsbluff. McCook carded an 18-hole team total of 362 strokes to beat Sidney by 30 strokes. Scottsbluff was a distant third at the Sidney meet with a 398. The Bison return four players from the team that finished third at the 2010 Class B Girls State Golf Championships played at Grand Island’s Indianhead Golf Course last October. High expectations With high expectations entering this year, head coach Randy Ryser said his players had not talked much about any high hopes for the season. “I haven’t heard a lot of talk about it,” Ryser said. “What I have heard is that they’re looking forward to playing every tournament, and they think that they can be a force in deciding the outcome of each one of them. As far as specific goals, I haven’t heard much talk about it.”

Seven players are on the Bison squad. Kaylee Samway had the best effort at state last season, as the junior finished fourth at the Class B state meet last season, shooting a two-day, 36-hole total of 166 strokes. Senior Megan Rokusek and sophomore Megan Vetrovsky tied for 15th at state last year. Each carded a 36-hole score of 179. Senior Taylor Hanson also had a strong two days at state, as she ended up in a tie for 26th with a 189. Bison return experience The Bison lost one lone senior from last year’s state meet quintet. Shelby Allen finished 13th at state with a 176. Sophomore Breanna Redl moved into the varsity lineup for the Sidney Invite. Junior Makayla Packard and freshman Courtney McBride are the other team members. Coach Ryser knows he has a strong team representing McCook this fall. “There isn’t a tournament out there where we don’t plan on doing well,” he said. “We think that we can compete with anybody. Hopefully we will.” Scottsbluff may have an uphill battle to win a fourth straight Class B state crown. Kaitlyn Krzyzanowski, third at state last season, transferred to Gering. Coach Ryser still thinks the Bearcats will field a formidable team when district tournament time rolls around in early October. The Class B-6 District meet will be played Oct. 3 at the West Winds Golf

Course in Ogallala. The Bison will join the host Indians and Scottsbluff, plus Alliance, Cozad, Gering, Lexington and Sidney in the district competition. The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualify for the 36-hole Class B state meet at the Riverside Golf Course in Grand Island Oct. 10-11. McCook hosts its annual tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Course Fri day, Aug. 26. The Bison girls will also compete in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference at Kearney’s Meadowlark Hills course Sept. 30 in a tune-up for districts the following week. Tons of golf over summer Coach Ryser said his team got ready for the fall prep season by playing a ton of golf over the summer. He thinks the Bison have prepared themselves well for the season ahead. “”I think they actually played about as much as they could and still be a kid,” he said. “I hope that they took some time to do things just for themselves. To be honest with you, I think most of them doing things for themselves probably would have been golf. Kids need to be kids, and hopefully they didn’t overdo it. “They’re coming in in pretty good shape. There’s a certain amount of physical conditioning needed, especially early in the season with all the heat and all the hills they’re going to see the first couple of weeks. I think the kids are ready for that.”

BARTLEY, Nebraska – A handful of girls will make history at Southwest High School this fall. The Roughriders are fielding a girls golf team for the first time, with long-time Southwest instructor Linda Clark taking the reins as head coach. "This year is our first year, and we're definitely looking to build up our program," Clark said. "We have a couple of girls who have played some golf who should do well this season." The Southwest roster has junior Emily Fitzsimmons, sophomores Haley Teter and Micah Hinz, plus freshman Ashlea Fitzsimmons. Southwest will enter the Class C-4 District meet at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hastings Oct. 3. Gazette area representative Dundy County-Stratton will also be in the district along with host Hastings St. Cecilia plus Broken Bow, Centura, Gibbon, Gothenburg, Kearney Catholic, Loup City, Minden, Ravenna, St. Paul, Superior and Wood River.

BENKELMAN, Nebraska – The Dundy County-Stratton girls golf team is hungry to improve on success built last fall. The Tigers finished fifth at the Class C-5 Districts, and coach Tim Rettele has several players returning from last season. "We look to be competitive during the 2011 season," Rettele said. "The girls have worked hard during the summer to improve their games. We missed a chance to qualify for state last year, and this close call has made the girls hungry for another chance to qualify." Leading players for DCS this fall include a pair of seniors in Breanna Schillington and Mariah McAfoos. Schillington finished 11th at districts and won titles at two meets last season. McAfoos is battling back from a broken arm suffered last year. Sophomore Jayde Behlke showed great improvement last season, according to Rettele.

IMPERIAL, Nebraska – A young, inexperienced Chase County High School girls softball team is hoping to break a losing streak this year. The Longhorns went winless in 14 games last fall, and head coach Denise Smith thinks her young squad is building toward a brighter future. "We're very inexperienced and young yet," Smith said. "We only have one senior, so we have lots to build and look into the future with. As the year progresses, more experience and confidence will add to a bright future. We're looking to improve skills and teamwork and hopefully get some in the win column." The lone senior on the Chase County roster is a good one. Kacia Smith compiled a .465 batting average last season, with a .628 slugging percentage. Other letter winners returning include juniors Jordan Gibb and Michaela Space, plus sophomores Cassie Burpo, Ally Vrbas, Abbi Vetter and Blair Hartman.

The Eagles compiled a 1314 won-loss record last season under head coach Brad Reaves. Reaves has six letter winners returning this season, including a trio of seniors and three juniors. Bison tennis replaces two-time state champion FALL SPORTS 2011

McCook High School tennis coach Matt Wiemers has a dilemma he hasn’t faced for several years Wiemers will have to find a player to use as the No. 1 singles position for the Bison. For the past four years, Wiemers hasn’t had to make that decision – he has just left Connor Larson’s name penciled in at that slot. Larson lost just seven singles matches during an illustrious McCook career. He won consecutive state championships with perfect records his junior and senior year. Larson graduated last spring and has taken his tennis talents to the NCAA Division I level at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Replacing Larson Wiemers may have a tough decision as to who his No. 1 singles player will be, and that position might change many times before the season is out, as Wiemers has a young but fairly balanced team as far as talent goes. There will be plenty of competition amongst the Bison team members on a weekly basis in battles for the top six spots in the varsity tournament lineup. “That’s what we do every year,” Wiemers said early in fall workouts. “I tell the boys at the (pre-season) meeting that everybody has to earn their spot. They all know there’s six varsity spots open. It’s going to be very competitive to see who those top six players will be for our first meet of the season. “I think it’s going to be up and down, who’s going to be in, who’s going to be out. I would be totally shocked if we start the season with our top six and finish with those same players in our top six. We’re

going to be that even as far as going through probably our top 10 players, at least. While Larson has departed, Coach Wiemers has several other players back from last year’s Class B state tournament team. Wiemers will welcome back varsity veterans in senior Connor Palic (No. 2 doubles last season), junior Cody Jankovits (No. 2 singles state qualifier) and the No. 1 doubles team of Tristan Thomas and Drew Bredvick, both juniors. Sophomore Mack Alspaugh did not letter last year, but he should be among the top players for the Bison. Six seniors return Wiemers has six seniors on the team, including Palic, Lucas Jumps, Marcus Golden, Jake Ruppert, Tate Stang and Spencer Van Pelt. Wiemers said he has athletic players who will compete, but many haven’t had much or any varsity experience entering this season. Another tough part of the season is a tough schedule with only three home meets. “We’re looking forward to seeing what the team can do and how quickly they can improve,“ Wiemers said. The Bison will do it all without their singles machine the past four years. “It will be different, but I think the guys are ready to step up and move on,” Wiemers said. “It will kind of a new era without Connor, but the guys are ready to go, and we have four kids coming back from last year’s squad that participated quite heavily in varsity-level play. Hastings in a dual meet at the Bison Courts just west of the Senior High School and adjacent to the Ed Thomas YMCA. McCook is scheduled to visit Scottsbluff Oct. 1 for the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament.

The Nebraska School Activities Association abolished Class B boys tennis district competition this year, so each should be able to send No. 1 and No. 2 singles players plus No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams to the Class B state meet at Lincoln Oct. 13-14.
