HOBBIES Breakthroughs to Longer and Healthier Life Is it possible to run a marathon at 100? Can heart disease, cancer and diabetes be reversed? Is it possible to heal our bodies with our minds? The answer to all of these questions is "yes" according to cases studies. Medical systems from other cultures, including those of India and China, have used natural treatments for centuries, some of which are now directly influencing our own health-care professions. These approaches not only emphasize healing with natural substances, but devote considerable attention to illness prevention and healthful living by considering the whole person rather than just targeting a condition. This program will focus on discoveries of many of the causes of modern diseases and natural techniques that have been shown to help people recover. We will look at evidence from "Blue Zones" where people live longer and healthier than average. We explore energy healing techniques like Qi Gong and healing touch, which are now being used by some health care professionals. Managing Health Care Expenses in Retirement According to a recent survey by Bankers Trust, 57 percent of baby boomers said they had a poor understanding or knew almost nothing about Medicare. Three-quarters of boomers didn't know that most Americans on Medicare pay premiums, copays and deductibles. One in seven thought Medicare was free. Only 14 percent knew Medicare does not cover long term care. A health care crisis is looming in this country and it is essential for baby boomers to understand what they need to prepare. This education workshop will cover the following: how Medicare enrollment periods work, how much you can expect to pay in health care costs, how Medicare works with private insurance, why most people pay too much for private insurance and why you must plan for higher health care costs in retirement. No specific insurance or investment products will be discussed. The instructor is Linda Arena. You'll receive a guided tour to each of the nine grottos which contains a scene in the life of Christ handcarved from Italian Carrara Marble. Covering an entire city block, the Grotto represents the largest collection of precious and semi-precious rocks, minerals, and fossils concentrated in any one spot in the world. Don't miss the Christmas Chapel, located in Sts. Peter and Paul Church next to the Grotto. Built in 1929, the Chapel contains rocks from every country and major rivers in the world. A 300 pound Amethyst adorning the manger of baby Jesus is also one of the famous features of the Chapel along with an award winning hand-carved bird's eye maple alter. The beautiful artistry has to be seen in order to be appreciated, and the message it inspires is beyond words! Make sure that you bring your camera. This charming town of Pella is filled with sights, tastes and sounds reminiscent of Holland. Settled by Dutch immigrants in the mid-19th century, the area preserves its heritage in the still-operation 1850s Vermeer Windmill, one of the tallest in the U.S. The adjoining canal, with working drawbridge, flows through the town center. Pella’s architecture gives visitors the feeling of visiting Amsterdam, along with wooden shoes, delicate Dutch pastries and the musically animated Klokkenspel, a carillion clock with eight four-foot animated mechanical figures that move to music. These are just some of the many unique attractions you will see on this tour which will make you feel Dutch for the day!

Sandhill Crane Migration* Requirement: moderate walking Crane viewing: witness the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes from the banks of the Platte River in south-central Nebraska. Every year during March and early April over 500,000 sandhill cranes along with hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese converge on the Platte River Valley. There will be several opportunities to view the cranes. You'll meet experienced staff guides of the Nebraska Nature Center and Fort Kearny Historical State Park during this tour. Each of these sites are located right in the heart of this magnificent sandhill crane staging area where the birds can be viewed in the fields and in gatherings on their roosts along the Platte River. Your first stop is the Crane Trust Nature Center in Wood River, Nebraska which provides a place where you can connect to nature along the Platte River. The spacious interpretive center offers exhibits on cranes, waterfowl, and endangered species. The center also includes the Crimson Crown Gift Ship and an art gallery highlighting Nebraska's top photographic artist. There's a 35-foot observation tower that offers a commanding view of the valley and the nearby herd of bison. For lunch enjoy a buffet at the Alley Rose with an entrée, several side dishes, salad bar, dessert, and beverage. In the afternoon you'll visit the Museum of Nebraska Arts (MONA), home to the state's only collection of art created solely by Nebraskans. Then experience the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument, a fantastic link to the past spanning Interstate 80, with 79,000 square-feet of exhibits. Eight stories span a distance where trappers, pioneers, and the Pony Express once passed through. Learn about the trials and triumph of their story as told through huge murals, displays, lighting and narration. TripAdvisor.com ranks the Archway the number one attraction in the area and has very high rating reviews. The tour will include one of Kearney's most popular sites, the Classic Car Collection, housed in a 50,000 square-feet space. It's the best public car attraction between Chicago and Denver presenting more than 130 vintage autos from the early 1900s to the 1980s. Included are large video and multi-media displays. There will be a stop for dinner at a fast food restaurant before we travel to the Fort Kearny. View the historical fort which includes a blacksmith-carpenter shop, powder magazine, and split stockade. Next, visit the Historical Campground site for watching the cranes. You'll follow a 1/3 mile trail to a bridge that overlooks the Platte River to hear and see the cranes roosting for the evening at a distance. Requirement: moderate walking Visit the best of Concordia, Kansas during the beautiful month of May. The first stop is the National Orphan Train Museum to meet your step-on guide for the day. The museum takes you back to a forgotten time in our history when many children lived in terrible conditions in eastern cities; 200,000 children, during 70 years from 1853-1929, were relocated throughout the Midwest and Canada with the hope of being given an opportunity for a better live. Several books have been written and a PBS TV special was produced about the Orphan trains. Next, visit a WWII German POW Camp. Learn about the camp's fascinating history during September 1942 to November 1945, including information about the Nazi officers in confinement, how the camp was run, and the life that existed there during the war. Later, view the largest carved wall mural in America. The wall is amazingly put together as a wondrous piece of sculptural architecture. The town's people refer to the wall as the "Exquisite Gem on the Plains." The three dimensional mural measures 140' wide by 15' in height and includes 6,400 individually hand carved bricks. Your guide will provide a story about each of the events depicted on the wall. Marla's Joy Tea House in downtown Concordia will provide a delicious lunch including a sandwich, salad, soup, dessert and beverage. After lunch, receive a guided tour of the Nazareth Convent and Academy. A joyful and inspiring visit, the Motherhouse is a magnificent structure that offer living quarters to retired Catholic nuns. Even if one is not religious, the art and architecture collected all in this one place is a treasure to be seen and appreciated. Perhaps some of the most striking pieces are the beautiful stained glass Windows. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Afterwards, visit the gift shop which includes artwork, jewelry, lace, afghans, quilts, dolls, greeting cards and woodcraft. A special surprise stop will be included that involves, weather permitting, a wagon ride pulled by Belgian horses! A fast food dinner stop is planned.
