Welcome: How to Use this Magazine To get the most out of this magazine and navigate it more effectively, use this guide for assistance. Step One: On the next page, you will find some information about life balance with some clarifying questions to assist you in thinking through how balanced your life is (or isn’t)! You will also see an overview of the Intensives that we will be offering this Fall. Step Two: On pages 4 and 5, there is detailed information and guidance about how to use the Wholeness Wheel to measure the balance in your life as well as some indicators about which Intensive(s) might best support your effort to move toward wholeness. Step Three: On pages 6-13, you will find a detailed description of the four Intensives. Read through the information and think seriously about which of the Intensives you want to register and join. Step Four: On page 22, you will find six Spiritual Locations. These are designed to assist you in determining where you are in your spiritual life right now. Read through them and work toward choosing programs and experiences that will support and encourage you right where you are! Step Five: On pages 14-17, are the descriptions of our recurring weekly and monthly programs. On pages 23-29, are the descriptions for programs in September, October and November. Based on where you are spiritually, what experiences would most support you? Choose well! Step Six: At the very center of the magazine (pages 18-19), you will find a listing of Special Services and Events. These are special dates that involve our entire faith community and the greater Saint Louis community around us. Read through these, and be sure to put these important dates in your calendar. Step Seven: If you need a quick glance at all the program offerings, go to pages 20-21 to see them listed by Spiritual Location with quick reference page numbers. Step Eight: After you’ve spent some time deciding what you want to participate in, take the final step and register for the classes and events that you have determined will strengthen your life balance and support you spiritually. There are three ways you can easily register for programs: 1. Visit www.mccgsl.org. On the right side of the homepage, click on the button marked “Register.” Doing so will take you to a page that lists all the available programs. Click on the program you want and follow the instructions from there. If there is a cost, you will be prompted for your credit/debit card information. 2. For all those programs with a cost associated, you may also register and pay by visiting the kiosk that is located in the lobby of the church. 3. Finally, on Sundays following worship, there will be someone in the Engage Room located off the lobby of the church to help you register for any program. If you need help registering or wish to pay for a program by cash or check, someone in Engage Room can help you do that.

ENGAGE! 2

Fall Intensives Our Intensives are based on four of the six aspects of the Wholeness Wheel.

How’s your life balance? Do you feel that you’re spending too much time at work and there must be more to life? Are you always stressed because your finances keep you living from paycheck to paycheck? Are your significant relationships healthy and fulfilling? Are you spending time deepening your relationship to God? If one of these is seriously out of balance, you will likely feel stressed, tired and/or unhappy. Even so, these are important life signals that create opportunities for you to accept where you are, dive in, and learn more about what this place teaches you. If you were to choose just one area to focus your attention and “dive in,” which one would it be? Which area do you believe holds the greatest life lessons for you? Are there patterns in your wheel that you can identify? If so, are they patterns that enrich your life or get in your way? Since we are all on the journey to wholeness, where do you think you are in that journey?

Wholeness Wheel How smooth is the ride of life based on this wholeness wheel? The imaginary person exemplified by the wholeness wheel on the left is having a pretty bumpy ride these days. Overall, things are good in the financial, social, and relational parts of life, but things are pretty rough when it comes to the physical and spiritual areas. Based on that, this imaginary person might seek out some programs in at least one of those categories. Perhaps the physical intensive to get more fit? Maybe a spiritual program or two might help to reconnect with God? Below are some descriptions of each of these categories that make up the wholeness wheel.

Financial – having enough to meet your needs. Do you know how much money you need on a monthly basis? Do you have any large credit card bills or loans? How well do you manage your expenses, investments, and savings? Would you like to have financial independence? How generous are you able to be with your money? What are your dreams that require money? Relational – being happy and fulfilled in all your relationships. Are your relationships with friends healthy and happy? Are you resolved with your family of origin? Is there more you can do in/with your family for those relationships to be healthy and whole? Are you able to communicate effectively in all your relationships? Are you taking time for yourself to do things you enjoy? If you are in a relationship, do you and your partner discuss one another’s needs? Spiritual – being connected to Spirit. Are you actively engaged in your relationship with Spirit? Is your relationship to Spirit going deeper and deeper with time? Are you aware of your own spiritual gifts and talents? Do you feel a sense of spiritual expansiveness or constriction? Do you sometimes feel angry with God? Are there questions you have in your spiritual life that you are afraid to consider?

Your Wholeness Wheel How smooth is the ride of your life based on your wholeness wheel?

Use this wholeness wheel to plot your own place in each of the six parts of the wheel. After plotting the points, connect them with a line. Examine where you have “bumpy spots” and choose which Intensive would best support you in moving closer to a balanced life.

Physical – being fit, healthy and well. Are you a healthy weight for your height? How physically active are you? Do you have a healthy diet? When was the last time you visited the dentist, got your eyes tested, or checked your blood pressure? Do you find yourself disconnected from your body? Are you happy with your clothes, your style, and your physical identity? Are you sexually active in a way that you feel good about? Internal — being connected to yourself. Is there a difference in how you see yourself and how others see you? Are you taking steps to grow and learn about yourself? Are you self-reflective? Are you able to find your own voice and express yourself in appropriate ways? Can you sit quietly with yourself without having to be doing something? Are you a life‐long learner? Social — being connected to others and having fun. Are you making an effort to meet new people and try out new things? Do you share fun times with others on a regular basis? Do you make a distinction between personal and work socializing? Is it hard to find ways to connect with others socially?

Internal Intensive: “Loving What Is...Whatever It Is”

Internal

Facilitator: Bryan Wagner Overview of the Content: Growing up in a religious family, we are told to “love thy neighbor as thyself.” This is one of Jesus’s two great commandments. It sounds all well and good, but how do we do it? What if our neighbor is a cheating spouse, an erratic ex, a judgmental parent, an annoying boss, or a disrespectful child? How do we love them then in that moment? How do we love them when they hurt us, anger us, frustrate us, scare us, or betray us? Best-selling author, Byron Katie has found a way. It is called The Work. The Work is a way to find peace with whatever is happening and to love what is, whatever it is. To be clear, this is about “Loving What Is,” not simply “accepting what is,” “tolerating what is,” or “putting up with what is.” It is loving what is, as it is. This Work isn’t about pretending to love what is or trying to love what is. It is a way to undo our stressful thinking about any given situation so that love happens naturally, without being forced or contrived. Loving is easy, and our natural state when we are not believing stressful thoughts that argue with reality. As Katie often says; “When we argue with reality, we lose—but only 100% of the time.” What will you get from this course? 

Learn The Work—a powerful, practical tool to eliminate suffering

A way to find peace with whatever is happening in your life

A way to heal relationships

A way to overcome trauma, abuse, regrets and/or hurt from the past

More self-awareness and self-love

A kinder, clearer world-view

A way to forgive deeply

This is a practical course. Once learned, The Work is something you will have to help you find peace in any situation. You will have the ability to identify and effectively question any thoughts that are causing you suffering.

My experience with The Work has been life transforming. It has brought me to an acceptance, peace and celebration of life I haven’t been able to achieve in any other way. About Your Facilitator: Bryan Wagner Bryan Wagner is a Certified Facilitator of The Work of Byron Katie who has given numerous workshops, retreats and presentations on The Work. He is an insightful, compassionate facilitator of The Work and an engaging and humorous presenter. Bryan has personally used The Work to question stressful thoughts around relationships, death and dying, dementia of an aging parent, homosexuality and internalized homophobia, God and religion, gurus and cults, and addiction. He has experience working with others on issues around divorce, children, parents, rape and incest, abuse, self-esteem, cancer, and career. He hasn’t yet found an issue that is too dark, difficult, or scary that can’t be relieved and healed with The Work and a willing mind. He finds that however dark the mind gets, with The Work that very darkness provides the stepping stones to light and freedom.

“Bryan is an amazingly gifted teacher that lightens the room with a sense of humor and yet at the same time supports the space with a depth of pure presence, that which is open, honest and compassionate. Bryan has done his own work, which opens the gateway for others to feel supported and safe as they do the work on themselves.” —R. Buck 7

About Your Facilitator Rev. Wes Mullins Rev. Wes Mullins is the Senior Pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis (MCCGSL). He began serving the congregation in November 2013, brining a new vision and energy to the life of our church. Pastor Wes has been refining the materials he shares in this class for over a decade as he has presented these materials in churches and classrooms across the United States. Rev. Wes is an avid reader and a lifelong student who is well-regarded as an engaging teacher. He believes that all people of faith are capable of learning the same kinds of lessons and truths that have previously been reserved only for those who venture into the hallways of a seminary. This class is an excellent example of Pastor Wes’s passion for meaningful spiritual teaching in churches as he will explore truths about the books of the Old Testament that many preachers and teachers have refused to bring from the seminary classroom into the hearts and minds of congregants. You will see how Pastor Wes makes the complex seminary ideas relevant and accessible to all members of our church and community.

About Your Facilitator: Dave Ramsey

Starting from nothing, by the time I was 26 my wife Sharon and I had a net worth of over a million dollars. I was making $250,000 a year. That's more than $20,000 a month. We were really having fun. But 98 percent truth is a lie. That two percent can cause big problems, especially with $4 million in real estate. I had a lot of debt — a lot of short-term debt — and I'm the idiot who signed up for the trip. The short version of the story is that debt caused us, over the course of two and a half years of fighting it, to lose everything. We soon learned that we were not the only ones at the bottom. Barbie and Ken (you know, the couple who appear to be perfect— perfect clothes, perfect car, perfect house) are broke, and I don't take financial advice from broke people anymore.

After losing everything, I went on a quest to find out how money really works, how I could get control of it, and how I could have confidence in handling it. I read everything I could get my hands on. I interviewed older rich people, people who made money and kept it. That quest led me to a really, really uncomfortable place: my mirror. I came to realize that my money problems, worries and shortages largely began and ended with the person in my mirror. I also realized that if I could learn to manage the character I shaved with every morning, I would win with money. I went back to my first love, real estate, to get out of debt. Along the way, I began another path—the path of helping others, literally millions of others, take the same quest to the mirror. I formed The Lampo Group in 1992 to counsel folks hurting from the results of financial stress. I’ve paid the “stupid tax” (mistakes with dollar signs on the end) so hopefully some of you won't have to. I wrote the book, Financial Peace, based on all that Sharon and I had learned and began selling it out of my car. With a friend of mine, I started a local radio call-in show called The Money Game, now nationally syndicated as The Dave Ramsey Show. We’ve had many landmarks along the way —and we're not slowing down. We want to share these lessons with you!

About Your Facilitator: Rev. Katie Hotze-Wilton Katie has always been active in her life. She grew up playing soccer, softball, and basketball, but one thing that did not come naturally for Katie was healthy eating habits. Pasta, pizza, processed sugars, candy and fast food were normal staples of her diet. A year ago she signed up for a gym membership and went everyday for about six weeks. Then, life happened, and she stopped going. She got busy and stopped taking care of herself. On May 18, two friends encouraged her to start her first round of a 21 Day Fix Challenge. In those three weeks she got serious about her food and daily workouts and began paying attention to her body while also taking time simply to BE still. She felt more alive, had more energy, and could keep up with her three-year-old again. On top of that, she lost 6lbs and 2 inches off her waist in those first 21 days. She fell in love with the program and the ability to change her life for the better. She became a certified BeachBody coach on July 2, and she is offering this intensive as a way to share the blessing of Physical Wholeness with you! 13

SPIRITUAL LOCATION: “Wherever you are is the richest place to be.” Which of the following spiritual locations speaks to where you are right now?

SEARCHING

I’m not sure where I am or what I believe. I’m in a place of questioning my faith… Possibly distancing yourself from faith experiences that no longer fit, or dealing with experiences which have shaken or undermined your beliefs, if you are in the SEARCHING spiritual location you are likely actively questioning the church, Christianity, and God. The SEARCHING spiritual location is all about letting go of old stuff, questioning former assumptions, beliefs or traditions, and experimenting as you sense what does and doesn’t fit with who you are and what you are coming to believe at this point in your life.

CHANGING

I’m experiencing transformation in my faith life. I’m in a place of new God-experiences… Possibly rediscovering longings buried long ago, or discovering whole new possibilities for a life of faith after a significant or life-changing experience, if you find yourself in the CHANGING spiritual location you are often releasing old wounds and reaching for a new way to be in relationship with God. The CHANGING spiritual location is all about beginning to move in new directions, coming to know God differently, or coming to experience a different kind of God, by exploring what it might mean for you to get up close and personal with the Holy!

CONNECTING

I’m finding my faith in community. I’m in a place of exploring my spirituality with others… Possibly alight or “on fire” with new or renewed excitement in your faith journey, or interested in becoming more fully part of a faith community, if you find yourself in the CONNECTING spiritual location you are likely experiencing a strong desire to share your faith-life in relationship with others. The CONNECTING spiritual location is all about small groups “praying and playing” together, learning and deepening your relationship with God and each other and finding your place in a family of faith!

LISTENING

I’m quieting my life to hear God’s voice. I’m in a place of inner spiritual attentiveness… Possibly responding to a challenging or renewed sense of Presence in your life, or a restlessness for more intimacy with God and more authenticity within yourself, if you find yourself in the LISTENING spiritual location you likely desire greater depth, simplicity and clarity in your spiritual life. The LISTENING spiritual location is all about hearing the “still, small voice” within - be it through creativity or contemplation, daily activities or ancient disciplines - you are inviting Spirit to speak in your life!

SERVING

I’m feeling the need to give of myself. I’m in a place of living my faith in caring for others… Possibly inspired by gratitude, compassion or justice-seeking, or by a desire to “get out of yourself” by giving to those in need, if you find yourself in the SERVING spiritual location you are often sensing a need to use your gifts to care for others. The SERVING spiritual location is all about becoming God’s hands, feet and voice through ministry, activism, service, and opening your life to discover the Holy most vividly in yourself and others through service - the heart of faith!

PREPARING

I’m deepening my faith journey. I’m in a place of responsiveness to God’s call in my life… Possibly desiring to personally engage with sacred texts, expand your understanding of theological ideas, or to commit more deeply to your prayer life and spiritual practices, if you find yourself in the PREPARING spiritual location you are often seeking spiritual growth in such things as meaningful discipleship or servant leadership. The PREPARING spiritual location is all about readiness to live out God’s call and your passion by engaging and strengthening the foundations of your living faith and preparing yourself for ministry leadership with others! 22
