HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET

A

s I am writing this the world, as we know it, seems to be changing moment by moment. Yet life for my cats, Max & Bailey, remains the same as they nap all afternoon without a care in the world. Oh, to be a house cat with only food, snuggles and the opportunity for treats to occupy the mind. As I considered that thought, I realized I could learn Bailey & Max from these things as well, and learn the Co-Publishers lesson to turn my own focus to live in the present, letting the fog of uncertainties of the future dissipate, if only for a few minutes trusting that I know all is well. Bill and I watched a movie some time ago called “Bridge of Spies”. In it there is a character that is up to his neck in alligators, as the saying goes. When asked if he was worried, he responded, “would it help?” It’s a great line and something of a motto for us. Being aware, taking precautions, and planning for eventualities is all fine but worrying is probably not going to gain you anything but stress and anxiety. This month we have some outstanding, timely editorial, including “Breaking the Worry Habit Before it Breaks You” by John Koenig and “Holding Firm in a Storm” by Susan De Lorenzo. Both are local practitioners who will add insight to your life experiences. It is heartwarming to see so many coming together and helping each other in so many ways in this unprecedented time. Just this morning, I added two different daily, remote local group meditations to my calendar to be sure and stay connected. I’ve had a friend who is a neighbor of my parents reach out to me to see if they needed anything. I’ve heard stories of folks bringing flowers to nursing homes; it’s a whole new world out there from one minute to the next and we are all in it together. Please take advantage of all of the opportunities that arising with new technologies, and find different ways to connect and build the community we need. Stay well, hug (or elbow bump!), the ones you love, remain connected in the new ways that technology offers, find the blessings and gratitude for as many moments as you can, continue supporting small businesses and your fellow humans in whatever way you are able and most of all, hold to the belief and understanding that this too, shall pass. Be well my friends

New Compost Drop-Off Program in Providence The Urban Greens Co-op Market, in Providence, has introduced a new drop-off program for composting kitchen scraps. Collection bins are placed in front of the store all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Plastic stickers must be removed from produce and staples must be removed from teabags. Dairy can be included, however, no meat and no seafood scraps at this point in time. Each household is limited to three gallons per week, and Urban Greens can refer people to the best options for larger quantities. The service is free for co-op members and costs $2 per drop off for non-members. A yearly pass is available for $59, which guarantees finished compost in the spring and fall for gardeners. Compost cards at the cashier help participants track how much they are saving from the landfill. The store sells 5-gallon bins and compostable bags at the store, however, any unbleached paper container full of scraps is acceptable, or compost can be emptied from a re-usable bag. Monthly compost workshops are listed on the website events page. For more information, visit UrbanGreens.com

Therapy on the Mat Dr. Jorge C. Armesto is now offering individual yoga therapy sessions by appointment in Providence. With its foundations in ancient yogic philosophy, meditation, psychology and contemporary body-mind approaches, yoga therapy offers an opportunity to practice embodied present-moment awareness to enhance physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. No prior yoga experience is needed. All abilities are welcomed. Inherent in yoga therapy is a deep respect and appreciation for listening to the ways in which our bodies hold our past and current experiences. To honor this process, Armesto works within a trauma-informed approach that emphasizes going slowly, being attuned to our nervous system, cultivating self-compassion and offering momentto-moment choices as we reconnect with our body in a more spacious manner. If currently working with a psychotherapist to manage grief, anxiety, depression, addiction or to process traumatic experiences, yoga therapy can be an ideal complimentary treatment to traditional talk therapy by helping the body release difficult experiences. All yoga therapy sessions last an hour and are personalized through focused awareness, assisted postures, exercises, breath work and non-directive verbal cues. This state of embodied presence facilitates a pre-verbal emotional and mental processing that can bring new awareness and clarity to our lived experience. Cost: On donation basis (give what you feel moved and able to offer). Online sessions available. For more information, call 781-724-9007 or visit GoSlowly.com. Many people with anxiety worry excessively about everything. They are restless, find it hard to get motivated and can’t seem to make decisions, often feeling like there’s an elephant on their chest making it difficult to breathe. Neurofeedback can help when anxiety is interfering with our quality of life. Neurofeedback recognizes what our brain is doing and identifies whether our brainwave patterns are not acting as they should. Using a cap with small metal discs called electrodes, trained specialists are able to track and record brain wave patterns. The electrodes analyze the electrical impulses in the brain and send signals to a computer that records the results. As a result, brainwave patterns can be observed to see if there’s any dysregulated brainwave activity that is causing anxious feelings or causing the brain to become unfocused or race needlessly. The goal of neurofeedback is to transform an unhealthy, dysregulated brainwave pattern into a normal, healthy, organized pattern. Neurofeedback is based upon the principle that there is a normal pattern of brainwave activity and that the brain regulates itself based upon this pattern. The result: an improvement in the brain’s ability to regulate itself and perform better. This in turn can reduce or eliminate most neurological symptoms caused by the original irregular brain pattern. Unlike many other treatments that address the symptoms of neurological disorders, neurofeedback therapy trains the underlying source to alter the structure and function of the brain. As such, many patients report permanent positive changes to their behavior months and years after ending the therapy. Neurofeedback has helped thousands of people to improve their cognitive ability. The results are proven by science and have been used for more than 60 years. BrainCore, at the Chiropractic Neurology Center of West Greenwich is located at 16-A Noonseneck Hill Rd, West Greenwich, offers neurofeedback therapy. Take Echinacea to Reduce Anxiety Echinacea extract may be helpful for situationinduced anxiety, indicates a new study from Hungary’s Institute of Experimental Medicine, in Budapest. The researchers tested 64 middle-aged people that had scored high on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. They were given either 80 milligrams Echinacea angustifolia root extract or a placebo every day for seven days, followed by a threeweek washout period during which no pills were taken. Those taking the echinacea started experiencing less anxiety than the placebo-takers by day seven, and scored significantly lower in “state anxiety”, marked by arousal connected to specific dangers or threats. Measures of “trait anxiety”, in which anxiety is an ongoing personal characteristic, improved slightly compared to the placebo group. Improvements were maintained even during the washout period.

Breathe Cleaner Air to Help Bone Health Air pollution has long been linked to lung cancer, stroke and respiratory disease, and now research has found that it can lead to osteoporosis, as well. Researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health studied the bone mass and density of 3,717 people living in villages near Hyderabad, India. These were compared to fine particulate air pollution levels, which averaged more than three times the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The researchers also surveyed in-home cooking over wood, coal and other biomass sources. The results showed that exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with lower levels of bone mass, and that cooking over fires did not have that effect. “Inhalation of polluting particles could lead to bone mass loss through the oxidative stress and inflammation caused by air pollution,” says lead author Otavio T. Ranzani.

Mycorrhizae Make Plants Grow Naturally by David Jones Mycorrhizae is a symbiotic association between a fungus and a plant. The term mycorrhiza refers to the role of the fungus in the plant’s rhizosphere, its root system. Mycorrhizae play important roles in plant nutrition, soil biology and soil chemistry, however, most soil lacks abundant mycorrhizae because of chemicals that have been added and by construction, the weight of buildings, roads, traffic and mechanical interference by our daily lifestyles. Adding mycorrhizae to our gardens and yards will restore the natural biological balance to the soil of organisms that allow the transfer of nutrients from soil to plants to occur naturally. Plants supply the mycorrhizae with food obtained from the sun; in turn, the mycorrhizae supply the plant with nutrients obtained from the soil, derived from decaying organic material as it occurs in our woodlands and forests. Reintroducing this biology will restore the balance naturally and give plants a more natural and sustainable appearance without the use of chemical fertilizers which can run off, causing pollution and water bloom. Biodegradable Cooler Keeps Food Cold and Dry The ice chests we haul to picnics are typically made of Styrofoam, Dow Chemical’s trademarked name for extruded polystyrene, but it is a highly flammable source of greenhouse gases that animals can mistake for food and won’t degrade for hundreds of years, leading thousands of landfills to ban it. Now, Igloo, the top global cooler maker, has introduced a new, less-destructive alternative made out of paraffin wax and recycled tree pulp called Recool. The 16-quart, water-resistant cooler, sold at REI and other stores, keeps 75 pounds of contents ice-cold for up to 12 hours and goes up to five days without leaking water. The coolers can be stored and reused many times and then recycled, composted or used as a dry storage container. It’s also less likely to break or chip than Styrofoam.

Mexicans Return to Old Ways After Ban

A new law bans popular plastic bags in the Mexican capital, and grocery stores are poised to sell reusable synthetic fiber bags. The same law will ban handing out plastic straws, spoons, coffee capsules and other single-use items by 2021. Claudia Hernández, the city’s director of environmental awareness, says, “We are finding that people are returning to baskets, to cucuruchos [cone-shaped rolls of paper].” The old ways are present in other aspects, too. Many residents still use wheeled, folding shopping baskets and some vendors still measure out bulk goods in discarded sardine cans. Grocery stores that give out plastic bags will be fined, so most will opt for reusable shopping bags made of thick plastic fiber for about 75 cents. For hygienic reasons, the law leaves the door open to using plastic bags for such items as perishable deli meats or cheese.

Climate Change City Index for 2050 Temperature changes, water shortages and rising sea levels will impact some of the world’s most populous cities during the next 30 years. Apartment rental hub Nestpick.com commissioned researchers to comb through data and determine how the ongoing climate shift could impact specific cities to help people choose where to live and add to the debate about procedures that can be put in place to ensure the longevity and livability of cities. Bangkok faces the highest risk of flooding from rising sea levels and a projected temperature increase of 3° F. Nairobi may move from a temperate humid warm summer climate to a tropical-type savanna wet summer climate due to rising temperatures. The demand for water is projected to be double the supply in Melbourne. Ho Chi Minh City and Amsterdam are also very high on the list.

A “green” sunscreen has been synthesized from discarded cashew-nut shells by a team of scientists from South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania and Germany, reports the European Journal of Organic Chemistry. Using xylochemistry (wood chemistry), the scientists produced new aromatic compounds that show good UVA and UVB absorbance, which can protect humans, as well as polymers and coatings, from harmful rays from the sun. The research was published in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry. UV rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging and the development of lethal melanomas in humans and animals, and are also damaging to most materials, causing the discoloration of dyes and pigments, weathering, yellowing of plastics and the loss of gloss and mechanical properties.

Breaking the Worry Habit

Before it Breaks You by John Koenig Almost half of us worry more than we wish and a large percentage of those will admit they are even worried about worrying. Typical worries include problems with finances, health, relationship issues, work as well as topics like the national political scene, global warming and the coronavirus. The cost of worry includes health issues, difficulty sleeping, loss of productivity and general unhappiness and lack of joy. The common thread among most topics of worry is that they are about the future, either immediate or distant. Worry, by definition, is an answer to the question “What if…?” and is usually not “What if I win the lottery?”, “What if I get the girl or guy of my dreams?” or “What if the future is even better than the past?” Rather, worry is a particular kind of fear—a ruminating dread of the future.

THE WORRY HABIT Though the act of worry is completely unproductive, it gives people the illusion of being in control. A worrier thinks that by worrying they are either preparing to deal with a situation or, as if through magical thinking, the worrying will somehow erase the problem. Planning, on the other hand, is a very different activity. Planning is productive and adaptive. Planning leads to action, and action may make a difference in our life; worry won’t. Ridding ourselves of the worry habit starts by acknowledging that the habit itself is as much, if not more, of a threat to our well-being than whatever we are worried about. Worry leads to high blood pressure, sleepless nights and, at its worst, a feeling of impending doom. Worry is worse than a waste of time—it is a destructive use of our time. When you are ready to break the worry habit before it breaks you, apply these five simple principles to your most pressing worry: n Start by considering (ideally write down) the worst-case outcome of your worry. Then accept it. This may sound counter intuitive. It may even sound a little crazy and insensitive. But worry is often an attempt to avoid something. By accepting the worst possible outcome, we begin to connect with our 18

Rhode Island Edition

RINaturalAwakenings.com

power to deal with life on life’s terms and may actually start to feel a sense of peace. n Consider (ideally write down) alternative outcomes that are less severe than the worst case you have been picturing. Perhaps even think of possibilities where nothing bad at all happens and things turn out well. n Accept that right now you literally do not know what is going to happen. Train yourself to live in the present instead of a negative and terrifying future fantasy of your own creation. n Then instead of wasting energy in worry, plan (ideally in written form) on how to take action to avoid the problem, minimize its effect or develop ways to handle it effectively. n Put a “stop loss order” on worry. Some people find it helpful to even schedule a time for worry with a beginning and, importantly, an end. Other anti-worry measures include talking to a friend or therapist, exercise, prayer and meditation, focusing on another’s needs, watching a comedy or just going for a walk. One of the best books on the topic of worry (and how to not worry) was written more than 60 years ago by Dale Carnegie. Carnegie’s bestseller, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, lays out simple principles designed to help the chronic worrier stop the habit of worry. He begins by suggesting that worry itself is the problem, not whatever topic the worrier thinks is keeping him or her up at night. These principles are simple, yet powerful, but work only when—and if—they are applied, so start implementing them today. Holding Firm in a Storm by Susan De Lorenzo When life as we’ve known it is shaken to the ground and we find ourselves in a hailstorm of worry and despair, we are often faced with uncertain decisions and choices as we navigate an adversity that has no exact end date. The change in our circumstances can feel surreal, causing us to exclaim, “This is not my life!” Even with the belief that there is a seed of good in every adversity, we still need the strength, mindset and skills to sustain and support ourselves while the havoc plays out. We can’t deny the distressing facts coming at us when upheaval enters our lives, but we can learn to manage our thinking and practice calming techniques to keep worry and anguish from overtaking us and our well-being. Adversity demands something new of us that may not have been accessible in calmer circumstances. Not having a choice but to deal with our monster can raise our game. Accepting our circumstances and making the empowering decision to not see ourselves as a victim sets the stage for facing each new challenge in the days ahead. It won’t eliminate worry, exhaustion and anguish, but there is a place inside all of us where we can find calm. Like a storm out on the sea, deep down below the surface of the stormy waters, a calm can be found. It requires practice, but we have the capacity to leave our troubles at the surface and go deep into the comforting calm through various means, some of which are shared below. Breathe: Big, deep breaths into the belly. Fear creates shallow breathing, but with our awareness and focus, we can bring ourselves back into deep cleansing breath. Journaling: Use journaling to record feelings and fears, as well as prayers and affirmations. Visualization: We’ve been conditioned to prepare for the worst, so it takes practice to create a vision of what we would prefer

rather than what we fear. Meditation: There are many terrific sites and apps such as YouTube or the app Insight Timer that can take you from a beginner to an established meditator. Meditation places our focus on calming, life-giving mindsets, like a mini vacation from stress. Read spiritually supportive literature/ watch uplifting movies: Take comfort in reading uplifting scriptures, poetry and watching movies that lift us up or make us laugh. Ask for and accept help from others: Once we bring ourselves to being able to

ask for and accept help, it can feel like grace pours over our life and situation, and we have more energy available to us. Prayer and affirmations: Prayers, a ffirmations and feelings of gratitude have a different energy than prayers that plead and beg. We were born worthy. We truly are spiritual beings in a human body. Understanding and connecting with our divinity puts us in a position to feel loved and empowered. Keep negativity and negative people at a distance. Some negative people may be under the same roof; do your best to limit your exposure. The fewer people amplifying the dark time, the better. This is the time to pull in a positive team of supporters. Music: Listen to all kinds of uplifting and peaceful music, especially when sleep is needed. No matter what the adversity, there will be time for re-building when the dust has settled. For now, put yourself in a place that brings peace and support.

PLANET RESCUE Grassroots Strategies Combat Climate Crisis by Julie Marshall

ike most kids, Azalea Morgan loves polar bears. “They’re fluffy and cute,” the 8-year-old says, and after watching a documentary on how climate change is affecting these Arctic apex predators, she badly wanted to help. Her mom, Molly Morgan, suggested she do something big, because the problem of global warming is monumental. For nearly three weeks last September, Azalea pedaled her bike alongside her mom and 9-year-old sister, Ember, setting out from their hometown of Andover, New Hampshire, en route to New York City to attend the United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit, where Greta Thunberg and other global youth leaders marched for change. The trip was a fundraiser to put solar panels on their school and for future projects under KidsCare4PolarBears, a Facebook page that documents their ongoing efforts.

While not everyone has the time or inclination to ride 250 miles and camp—some of it in the rain—or as Thunberg did, sail across the Atlantic in a zero-emissions yacht, there are steps individuals can take to combat climate change on a grassroots level, experts say, because the crisis is undeniable, as seen most recently in the catastrophic bushfires across Australia. There are peaceful protests taking place worldwide scheduled throughout 2020 at FridaysForFuture.org and other organizations, but a growing number of individuals that want to do more are using their imaginations and creative endeavors, inspiring others to take unique action. Students at a school in Spain wrote and performed a play and illustrated a book to raise climate change awareness, while a teen from California used her artistic skills to raise thousands of dollars for wildlife. On March 28, people around the world participated in

I love to see what young people are doing, because if we collectively use our voice to amplify the facts about climate change, we can work to find solutions. ~Elan Strait the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour by collectively turning off lights at 8:30 p.m. while holding eco-events, and others are joining in the global tree-planting campaign of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Reversing course may seem insurmountable, but individuals have a lot of power, says Dan Shepard, UN global communications officer: “The choices we make, the things we do, collectively matter and can have a huge impact on the world.”

STEPPING UP FOR BIODIVERSITY “I wanted to inspire other kids,” Ember says of her bicycle trek for polar bears. “I love animals and they deserve to not die.” According to a 2019 UN Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, more than 1 million species are threatened with extinction, and one of the main reasons is climate change, say experts, including Nikhil Advani, director of Climate Communities and Wildlife at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Protecting large predators is one key to enriching biodiversity, Advani says. “The top of the food chain has a significant impact on prey species and the ecosystem.” But predators are suffering because of humans that are feeling the impacts of climate change, Advani says. Long droughts have forced many Kenyan pastoralists to enter protected parks and compete with wildlife for water and grazing land, resulting in lion deaths as retaliation for killing livestock. In the Himalayas, as the Earth warms, snow leopard habitat is being encroached for pastureland. In Zimbabwe, farmers have turned to chopping down trees for wood as an alternative economic opportunity. “Everybody is stressed and competing for resources,” Advani says. “It is a very severe result of climate change.” Advani and researchers are working in tandem with local

societies in 30 countries across Africa, Central America and Asia to fund novel projects under the Wildlife Adaptation Innovation Fund. For instance, they are piloting a rainwater harvesting project to help farmers get through the dry seasons and are constructing concrete and mudbrick nests to help albatross breed better in Tasmania. These special projects are based on available levels of donations that are sometimes crowd-sourced. Raising funds for innovative projects, as well as increasing awareness of what’s happening, is an important grassroots strategy, says Elan Strait, WWF director of U.S. climate campaigns. It can be as simple as sharing updates, tagging social media influencers and instigating a rallying cry. WWF has its own program called Panda Ambassadors in which conservation activists of all ages can get tips and tools to promote specific projects they feel most passionate about. “I love to see what young people are doing, because if we collectively use our voice to amplify the facts about climate change, we can work to find solutions,” Strait says. “And we need facts to get out there because, at least in the U.S., some people think climate change is still a controversy and are afraid to talk about it, but we should have that conversation with friends and family so we can find solutions.”

YOUTH RISING TO THE CHALLENGE Getting involved in grassroots-level strategies is empowering not only for kids, but for adults that need their resiliency and inspiration, says Janet Stringer, manager of donor relations at Polar Bears International, in Bozeman, Montana. “In my work, I hear from so many people who are feeling deep despair about the climate crisis. I draw hope from the children who write to us, sharing stories and pictures about their dreams for a future

that includes polar bears,” says Stringer. “I think we owe it to the next generation to work as hard as we can to come together and make the necessary changes to ensure that polar bears—and all wildlife—are not a species we learn about in the pages of a book, but a wild species that we can see with our own eyes, reminding us of how special our planet is and why it deserves our respect.” One of her favorite examples comes from students at the Daina-Isard school, in Olesa de Montserrat, Spain, and their climate-driven projects with teacher Connie Darilek, who asked the Aquarium of Barcelona to help them grow plankton, an organism threatened by warming seas. “They gave us plankton and jellyfish, and it was really amazing for the students to learn the [Arctic] food chain and how serious it would be losing the polar bear on top,” Darilek says. Students recently published the book Nanuc, a story about a polar bear that they also illustrated, now in its second printing. Josie Martin, 13, of Solana Beach, California, has raised $8,700 for conservation of rhinos, elephants, pangolins, gorillas and polar bears by giving watercolor paintings to those that donate to charities through her PayPal Giving page at Chuffed.org/project/ peace-love-hope-for-rhinos. “Each year, I think I’m getting a little bit better at creating art which sends a strong message,” she says. “The message I try to express is that some of our best-known wild animals might in my lifetime no longer be on the planet. I think the difference I make through art is that I am helping to raise awareness for important animal conservation work.”

EVERY ACTION COUNTS There’s no one solution to climate change, says Catherine Macdonald, TNC director of natural climate solutions for North America. “We really have to try, all of us. It’s important that everyone feel they can contribute, because everything does make a difference, and no action is too small.” For those that are not art-inclined, one of the best things people can do is to plant trees, Macdonald says, whether it’s replanting forests or increasing their numbers in urban areas. According to a 2018 study by TNC published in Science Advances, nature-driven land management could sequester 21 percent of America’s annual greenhouse gas pollution—the equivalent of emissions from all cars and trucks on the roads today. Planting trees emerged in the study as the most significant among 21 strategies to mitigate global warming. One good way to get started is join the TNC Plant a Billion Trees program, Macdonald says; details are at Tinyurl. com/TNCPlantABillionTrees. “Climate change is definitely a growing concern that we are facing, and as more people understand there is a problem and what the solutions are, the more influence we can have on the big decision-makers, whether that’s government or corporations that make our products,” she says. “And being aware informs voters to advance climate action.” While Josie, Ember, Azalea and the students at Daina-Isard aren’t old enough to vote, their message is strong. “I’m worried about the impact climate change will have on our future,” Josie says. “I think people should protest peacefully for the things they believe in and that more people should exercise their right to vote for leaders who care about the youth in our world and the generations to come. I also think people should try to spend a little bit of their time taking action for what they want to see changed in our world.” Julie Marshall is a Colorado-based writer and author of Making Burros Fly: Cleveland Amory, Animal Rescue Pioneer. Students Celebrating Earth Week by Wendy Fachon The Mount Hope High School Environmental Club, in Bristol, has big plans for celebrating Earth Week April 20 to 24. The club’s new co-advisors, Jennifer Alexander and Kristen Duprey, have been teaching science at the high school for two and a half and three years respectively. The club meets before school so students can pursue other activities after school. Co-presidents from the junior and senior classes lead a membership of 20 dedicated students. Each member lends different skills and passions to help achieve the team’s overall goal of promoting sustainable practices within the school community and beyond. Some students are eager to step into organizational roles, while others enjoy direct hands-on projects. Many students are enrolled in AP Environmental Science. Some aspire to environmental law while others aspire to environmental science, journalism or teaching. To honor the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, the club will host events and activities outdoors in the courtyard. In early March, the club began cleaning out the courtyard greenhouse and figuring out how to put it back into use. The students are organizing a plant and seedling sale, to take place during the school lunch period, and will donate some of the proceeds to an environmental

nonprofit while keeping some to fund future club events. Additionally, they will hold a reusable metal drinking straw sale. Club members will also set up information stations and provide snacks and beverages to draw others in and inspire involvement. This effort will help spread the word about recent environmental actions around the state and the nation. It will provide a forum for club members to share their knowledge and educate classmates and teachers about the problems and the actionable steps everyone can take to help make a positive difference for the environment. One example will be a table explaining H7471, the Rhode Island resolution for environmental education, a bill newly introduced at the State House. The bill resolution requests that the Rhode Island Department of Education develop a set of

key environmental and climate principles and concepts to be infused in all subjects for K-12 public school students. Club members will share the details, the reasoning and legislative status of the bill and instruct their peers on how to help advocate in support of the measure. The Environmental Club is planning to use a variety of media channels to share Earth Day and environmental news and facts, including daily announcements and emails to students, as well as public service announcements through the school’s Husky News Network (HNN) that is produced by a video broadcasting class and shown daily to the school community. Of course, the Environmental Club will be promoting itself throughout all these activities as they are looking to grow their membership. They also seek to establish more connections and support from the surrounding community of Bristol and Warren. For more information, contact Jennifer Alexander at Jennifer.Alexander@bwrsd.org. A Home That Heals Creating a Nurturing Space by Marlaina Donato

Our spaces are not meant to be stagnant, but to evolve through each stage of our lives. ~Bridget Saraka Home, whether a humble studio apartment or a dream house, is a critical facet of well-being, a spiritual headquarters from which good health springs. Everyone in the family, including two- and four-legged children, can benefit from an environment that feels like a sacred space. Creating nourishing corners, along with more open areas that feed the senses and a system of functional ease, can be a deep and rewarding act of self-care. “Our home is by far one of the most significant investments we’ll ever make. Our spaces are not meant to be stagnant, but to evolve through each stage of our lives,” says feng shui expert Bridget Saraka, of Saskatoon, Canada.

Ali English, owner of Eldrum Interiors, in Lincolnshire, England, concurs, “We all need a safe holt to return to, that space where we can be utterly ourselves, utterly at peace.”

SANCTUARY AND MENTAL HEALTH Investing in harmony does not require a high price tag. “It’s important to have a mental vision of what this means, and for me, there are three major components: peace, order and beauty,” says Texas-based designer Rachel Anne Ridge, who blogs at HomeSanctuary.com.

Like water and wind, harmony within the home should also flow. “Listening to the energies in your home and taking the time to move furniture around until you have a placement that makes your head feel calm is really important,” says English. Feng shui—the ancient Chinese system of creating harmony in personal and professional spaces—prioritizes color psychology. “More times than I can count, I’ve had clients report loss of motivation after painting their homes taupe. They’ve also reported weight gain and digestive disorders,” says Saraka. “It’s best to use colors that reflect light, especially for homes in locations where winter is long and days are short.” Disruptive clutter is another key player in eliciting discontent, especially for children that are sensitive to environmental stimulus. “A space that is cluttered can cause emotional distress, resulting in less-than-desirable behaviors,” says Saraka. “Something as simple as the lines of the furniture can feel sharp, creating anxiety. It all matters.”

CULTIVATING COMFORT Soul-inspiring visuals, satisfying textures and natural, delightful scents are all desirable domestic companions. A small, ambient lamp in a bathroom or a spring-colored sheer in a window can invite the benediction of light. “Step outside the room and then come back in as a guest,” suggests Ridge. “What do you notice with your newcomer’s eyes? What does the room feel like? What smells are you aware of? Do you need to move a cat litter box to another area of the house?

You may delay, but time will not. ~Benjamin Franklin

Would an area rug soften the hard sounds of foot traffic? Pause on each of your senses and make notes.”

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN Incorporating organic elements can boost the vitality of any living space. “House plants are a wonderful way to bring the green world into our homes. Go for organic ones if possible, and if you’re worried you may forget to water them, consider plants like scented leaf pelargoniums; for example, Royal Oak. They thrive on neglect and can also provide some wonderful room fragrances,” says English. She also suggests including natural or quality faux branches and blooms in the home as ways of decorating—berries to provide splashes of rich orange, pine cones dabbed with metallic paint, or even long stems of ivy leaves twisted into garlands. Having live plants in the home also benefits physical health. “Adding a few real plants to a space can help reduce environmental toxins found in paints and manmade products, as well as electromagnetic frequencies—by-products of electronics.” Ridge concurs, “Cacti can be a charming alternative for those of us who don’t have a green thumb, but still want to enjoy a living plant indoors.” In the end, a place of sanctuary comes from a place of love. English sums it up best: “If you pour that sense of love into your home, you will, over time, find that mirrored back at you, and you’ll feel it whenever you go through your front door.” Marlaina Donato is the author of several books and a composer. Five Steps to a Healthier Home by Erica LePore

Spring is the time of year when we often feel a renewed focus on clean eating and clean living. With the warming days, the eagerness to declutter our homes is also an opportunity to improve the health of our living spaces. If our homes are healthier, our bodies will be too. When looking to discard some clutter, these items should be at the top of the list:

FORGET FRAGRANCE Just because it smells good, doesn’t mean it’s good to smell. Many air fresheners contain artificial fragrance that is used to mask odors, not destroy them. Clean doesn’t have a scent. For a truly “clean” smell, open a window and let the fresh air in. Discard/donate: Scented candles, air fresheners (car and home), deodorizers (plug-ins and sprays), potpourri, scented bath products, scented laundry products including fabric softener and dryer sheets, moth balls and scented cleaning supplies. Healthy alternative: Choose fragrance-free alternatives. Some unscented products use masking fragrance to cover up the original fragrance, making it even more toxic. Look for fragrancefree for the cleanest products.

CLEAN UP CLEANING SUPPLIES According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), ingredients in cleaning supplies are chosen by companies without government review or approval. Because many of the ingredients in these products haven’t been tested for safety or toxicity, they can harm people’s health and are best avoided. Responsibly discard: Cleaning products with an EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning rating of C or worse. (EWG.org/guides/cleaners) Drop off at a hazardous waste location; do not dump unwanted cleaning supplies down the toilet or the drain. Healthy alternative: Replace with EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning products rated A or B, or use simple homemade solutions including white vinegar, castile soap, baking soda and/or hydrogen peroxide.

DITCH DUST COLLECTORS Household dust contains hormone disrupting flame retardants, pthalates and pesticides, and sits atop knick knacks and coats floors, furniture and children’s toys. Wearing outside shoes in the house tracks contaminants into the home. According to experts, lead, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other chemicals can adhere to 26

Rhode Island Edition

RINaturalAwakenings.com

dust particles that enter homes on the bottoms of shoes. Studies have found residues of 45 toxic and potentially harmful chemicals in household carpet dust. Discard: Furniture that is heavily contaminated with flame retardants or any furniture that has been sprayed with toxic and potentially carcinogenic stain protectants. Outdoor lawn and garden pesticides and herbicides that make up many of the chemicals tracked into the home. Healthy alternative: Regularly wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth, wet mop floors, vacuum with a machine with a HEPA filter and regularly change air filters on a forced heating and cooling system. Choose organic lawn care and garden options, and leave shoes at the door.

CHOOSE LESS TOXIC BUILDING MATERIALS Particle board, pressed board, carpeting, new cabinetry, paints, adhesive and upholstery can all emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, and decrease air quality and increase one’s risk for acute and chronic disease. Discard/replace: More toxic building materials with less toxic ones. Healthy alternative: Use no or low VOC paints, adhesives and 100 percent wood products, hard wood floors and products labeled formaldehyde-free.

CLEAR THE AIR Indoor air has been found to be more toxic than outdoor air, even in the most polluted cities. Contributors to poor air quality include all of the items listed above plus tobacco smoke, attached garages, fireplaces and wood stoves, and gas appliances. Avoid: Second hand smoke of all types, and get appliances and fireplaces checked regularly for efficiency. Healthy alternative: Open the windows for 10 to 15 minutes a day year round (even in winter) to improve indoor air quality. Fill the home with houseplants; they are natural air purifiers and have been shown to decrease VOCs such as formaldehyde in the air. The best choices are: English ivy, bamboo plant, peace lily, lady palm, rubber plant, spider plant, gerbera daisy, heartleaf philodendron, Chinese evergreen, elephant ear philodendron, snake plant and pot mum. Purify with two plants in 10- to 12-inch pots per 100 feet of living space or15 to 20 plants for a 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot home.

Rhode Island Health Equity Zones Incorporating Community Resilience by Rachel Calabro

Climate change affects vulnerable, low-income populations the most. Empowering those communities most affected to design their own resiliency programs is what the Climate Change and Health Program at the Rhode Island Department of Health has worked with Health Equity Zones (HEZ) in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Newport to do. Health Equity Zones use the power of community members to channel public support to neighborhoods impacted by health disparities. Through community workshops, HEZ has helped residents to assess their strengths and vulnerabilities associated with climate change and to identify strategies to reduce climate hazards. After the workshops, each team surveyed their own communities to identify strategies and develop a community-led intervention.

RESPONDING TO LOCAL EVENTS In the case of Newport, this meant building resiliency in response to the natural gas outage that occurred during January, 2019. During the gas outage, National Grid was forced to shut down a portion of its gas distribution system to more than 7,000 customers for more than a week. Evacuations forced people from their homes and information was limited and inconsistent. The chaos that resulted was fueled by underlying inequities that are often revealed in times of crisis. While Newport may have a reputation as a vacation destination, it is also an area of widespread poverty. During this time, the Newport Health Equity Zone became an important part of the effort to share information and reach vulnerable community members. They realized a well-defined emergency response plan was missing, nor was there the capacity to carry out such a plan. After the event, community conversations about climate change provided opportunities for residents to receive disaster-preparedness training and supplies and to establish relationships with public officials. 30

Rhode Island Edition

RINaturalAwakenings.com

Today, Newport is in a much stronger position to respond to a potential future emergency. Creating these connections between agencies, officials and communities increases cohesion and leads, both directly and indirectly, to better health outcomes.

STORYTELLING AND AWARENESS RAISING The Health Equity Zone in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence chose to create a film about the historic 2010 floods. The film aims to raise awareness of the dangers presented by the increasing frequency of natural disasters. It works to transform the threat of a major disaster into a tangible reality so that residents feel a greater sense of urgency regarding emergency preparation. The film was screened at multiple events and will continue to be used in schools and with community groups. Ryan Sherwood, director of photography for filmmakers Steer PVD, said it was the first time that he had worked on a story that highlights the impacts of climate change on a vulnerable population. Sherwood states, “It makes a lot of sense that populations already struggling could be impacted in a major way by the climate—even more so than others.”

COMMUNITY PARTNERS In Pawtucket and Central Falls, the nonprofit group Groundwork RI partnered with Southside Community Land Trust and Farm Fresh RI’s Harvest Kitchen for a six-week summer youth program. These community partners employed and trained 24 youth on how to grow, process, and cook their own local produce. The youth also worked to engage residents and gather data regarding climate resilient mitigation strategies. By the end of the summer, they completed 25 green home assessments, planted 21 trees at Baldwin Elementary school, in Pawtucket, installed nine raised garden beds at resident homes

and collaborated with the City of Pawtucket to install and deliver seven residential rain barrels to reduce flooding and utility bills. As a result of these initiatives, residents created the Climate Safe Neighborhoods Alliance to further engage families and youth.

MODELS FOR CHANGE Whether it is building raised vegetable beds, training in emergency preparedness, or filmmaking, the experience of the Rhode Island Health Equity Zones shows that locally-led resiliency projects are the most effective and durable. HEZ believes that these projects can serve as a model for change beyond Rhode Island, as communities seek to engage with climate change. Locally specific responses are the key to demonstrating both how we are affected by climate change today and how we can respond to its effects in the future. Rachel Calabro is the Climate Change and Health Program manager at the Rhode Island Department of Health. In that role, she helps Rhode Islanders prepare for the health effects of climate change through education, research and supporting policy change. Brigit Strawbridge Howard on Rediscovering Nature by April Thompson

Bees have been a portal to the natural world for me ‌ everything is interconnected, and you start to notice the whole web of life. Bee advocate, wildlife gardener and naturalist Brigit Strawbridge Howard was alarmed the moment she realized she knew more about the French Revolution than the native trees around her. Howard’s realization that she had lost touch with the natural world led her on a journey deep into the fascinating world of honeybees, bumblebees, and the often unsung superpollinator solitary bees, chronicled in her book Dancing with Bees: A Journey Back to Nature. Howard writes, speaks and campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of native wild bees and other pollinating insects. She lives in North Dorset, England, with her husband, Rob, where they love to bee-watch in their backyard garden.

WHAT FIRST PIQUED YOUR INTEREST IN BEES? Initially, apocalyptic headlines about bee decline and colony collapse with female worker bees leaving hives and not coming back alarmed me from a human food chain perspective. It happened to

be around the time I realized I had completely lost touch with the natural world I so loved as a child. I started looking for bees and became completely immersed in their world; the more I watched them, the more I lost track of time and the more questions I had. I also began to more worry about the bees themselves than about their decline’s effect on us. Bees have been a portal to the natural world for me. It happens when many people get interested in a specific species because everything is interconnected, and you start to notice the whole web of life.

WHAT MAKES BEES DISTINCT FROM OTHER KINDS OF INSECTS? Bees go out specifically to collect pollen and nectar to feed their larvae; other insects eat pollen and are important pollinators, but don’t collect it for their young. They also tend to visit the same flower species again and again, which other pollinators don’t always do.

HOW HAS YOUR STUDY OF BEES AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY? I dropped out of school as a teenager. Bees are the only thing I’ve truly ever studied; I am self-taught in insect biology and ecology. I have read scientific papers that I would have never thought were for the likes of me in my quest to understand more about bees. Also, when I feel overwhelmed with life, because of my interest in bees I have something else to focus on. I can lose hours and hours walking in the woods and totally forget my problems. I have learned to tune into the tiny things, the fungi and miniscule plants I would have otherwise walked past.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING ASPECTS OF BEE BEHAVIOR? Some years ago, I remember vividly a day on my patio listening to bees with my eyes closed and seeing if I could recognize them by their buzzes. Bumblebees have a deep booming buzz, for example, and I

It’s never too late to reconnect and find the curiosity and awe that you experienced as a child.

recognized this, but suddenly it changed to a high-pitched sound like a dental drill. I opened my eyes, and it was a bumblebee going round and round the sides of a Welsh poppy, sounding really frantic and having a pollen bath. As it turns out, she was sonicating, otherwise known as buzz foraging. This is how bees pollinate tomatoes. A lot of flowers don’t give up pollen easily, but the bumblebee knows exactly what to do. It grasps the flower and continues to vibrate without moving its wings. This produces high-frequency vibrations that trigger the tomato flower to open and explodes pollen out onto the bee.

WHAT ARE A FEW WAYS THAT WE CAN HELP SUPPORT BEE POPULATIONS? Maintain gardens, backyards and balconies with a variety of nectar-rich plants and create habitat for bees to nest in. Plant flowers that will bloom in succession. Stop using pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals, because the bees are taking that cocktail of chemicals back to the hive or nest, and collectively they are more dangerous than the sum of their parts. Also, dare to be less tidy in your garden; grow wildflowers and let flowering weeds like clover and dandelions be. Watch and see what comes. It won’t just be the bees: If we get it right for the bees, it spirals out to other species. It’s never too late to reconnect and find the curiosity and awe that you experienced as a child. It was bees that captured my attention and imagination; for someone else it may be something else, but if you make time to stop, sit and look around you, you will find the wonder in nature.

We need to get angry and understand what is at stake. And then we need to transform that anger into action and to stand together united and just never give up. ~Greta Thunberg
