egan dining in Rhode Island just got a whole lot easier. Local vegan entrepreneurs Karen Krinsky & Chris Belanger have recently published the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide to compassionate & healthier dining in the Ocean State at www.veganri.com. Their goal is not to endorse or review restaurants, but to let people know about the places that “get it” – restaurants that make the extra effort to make vegetarians & vegans feel welcome and have creative choices. The guide features places with separate vegetarian/vegan menus, menus with more than one clearly marked vegan item or offer regular vegan specials. Many places perceived as vegetarian friendly are not actually vegetarian friendly at all; many ethnic restaurants include fish products and meat broths in their dishes, even when they are listed as vegetarian or in vegetarian specific sections of a menu. “When restaurants have clearly marked vegan items, it sends a message that the wait staff, kitchen staff and ownership are all on the same page, and are truly serving food that can be trusted by their diet conscious clientele,” says Belanger. In addition to restaurant and store listings, the guide also lists upcoming vegetarian events, local vegetarian groups and a guide to locally owned vegetarian businesses is being developed. The pair are also in the process of organizing a RI chapter of Vegan Drinks – a bi-monthly gathering to foster social and professional ties amongst like minded people.
