Thank you for your interest in the 2017 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) GAMES OF TEXAS! The City of McAllen, in collaboration with the McAllen Convention and Visitors Bureau is preparing to host the GAMES for the second year. The 2016 Games held in McAllen were a success, recognized as the largest amateur sporting event in the state of Texas, with over 7,000 athletes and 10,000 spectators. With the help of our corporate partners, we hope to exceed our attendance goals and provide the best experience for visitors to the area and City of McAllen residents.

Demographics of visitors are broad and diverse, with guests from all over the State of Texas. The City of McAllen offers several sponsorship opportunities to companies/organizations of all types and sizes. TAAF was established in 1925 with a mission of creating and maintaining the highest ideals of amateur sports in the State of Texas; by promoting the development of physical education and encouraging the standardization of all amateur athletics, games, and competition rules. TAAF is made up of 140 organizations with over 210,000 individual participants. Members include parks and recreation departments, individuals, and organizations who contribute of their time and effort to this endeavor. From the first San Antonio 1986 Games of Texas, the popularity of this event has grown steadily. The GAMES OF TEXAS provide a wholesome avenue for positive, personal development through sports and physical activity for Texans of all ages and skill levels. Patterned after the Olympic Games and the U.S. Olympic Sports Festivals, the Games of Texas provides a forum for training and competition
In 2017, the GAMES will be held in sports facilities in McAllen, Edinburg, Harlingen and Brownsville. One of the showcase events that will help celebrate the GAMES is the OPENING CEREMONY EXTRAVAGANZA to be held at McAllen’s Convention Center.

THIS EVENT IS DESIGNED TO FILL A NUMBER OF VITAL NEEDS IN AMATEUR SPORTS INCLUDING:
•
Encouraging athletes to enter organized competition, mindful of the Olympic creed that “…the important thing is not winning but taking part”
•
Providing a “world class” stage upon which these amateurs can display their varied talents
•
Enabling the more gifted athletes to take their initial steps on the long, demanding road to the Olympic Games
•
Promoting visibility of all amateur sports - not just the more popular Olympic sports
•
Promoting the Olympic ideal at the grass roots community level
The Games of Texas is an amateur sports festival created for athletes from throughout Texas. The Texas Amateur Athletic Foundation, a nonprofit organization representing amateur athletes throughout the state, governs the Games of Texas.

HISTORY
— TAAF is proud to have been recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as an Official State Games Program Participant every year since 1991.
— The 2017 Summer Games of Texas will take place from July 27 to the 30th, and will host athletes in 16 different sporting events.
— The first Games of Texas were held in the summer of 1986 in San Antonio and consisted of ten sporting events.

THE PITCH
LOCATION
— Three years ago, McAllen beat Houston and Waco to host the Games with a group presentation to TAAF voters in New Braunfels.
— Typically, cities just have the Convention and Visitors Bureau provide bids. McAllen was represented by its CVB, independent school district and city officials who pitched it as a home-town event.
— This is the furthest south that the Games of Texas have been held. Events will take place in McAllen, Edinburg and Brownsville.
