2 GENERAL INFORMATION The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a caseby-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERS

We constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following. TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class. REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process. Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICY

The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

Reserve a park pavilion, pool or community center for your next special event! Perfect for birthday parties, family reunions, weddings, anniversaries and baby showers. Reservations are accepted in person during regular business hours at the following locations:

Celebrate America’s Independence during the annual Main Street Parade. All persons over 17 years of age must have a current TPWD Texas Freshwater Fishing License. Fishing is catch and release only. No casting nets or trout lines allowed.

BOATING GUIDELINES

No motorized boats permitted. Personal canoes and kayaks are allowed. Persons in canoes or kayaks must wear a life jacket at all times.

8 TAAF TEAM SPORTS T.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMS

McAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.) programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level.

GOLF TEAM

Experienced golfers will receive specialized instruction to improve their game play, while working towards regional and state competition within Region 2 of T.A.A.F. Participants must complete a skills test on Monday, June 1. The team will participate in tournaments throughout the summer.

(No putting or chipping due to maintenance)

Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the state Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. McAllen is proud to host the 2017 Games of Texas.

Nikki Rowe High School will be the home of the McFun 2017 T.A.A.F. Track & Field program. Under the direction of Coach Tony Trejo, improve your track and field techniques and compete against participants from across the Rio Grande Valley.

GAMES OF TEXAS PARENT MEETING

Parents of athletes who qualify for the Games of Texas will be required to attend a meeting to discuss expenses and general information. NOTE: The minimum age to travel with Team McAllen is 8 years of age. Additional costs will apply for non-resident athletes.

All Star Sports- Learn the basics and fundamentals of a variety of sports. Arts & Crafts - Explore a variety of art media and create your own masterpiece to take home. Acoustic Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Participant must provide their own acoustic guitar. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination. Dance & Cheer- Explore the world of dance movement and show your spirit by learning the basics of cheerleading such as chants, cheers, jumps, and stunts. Explore Art- Hands on Artwork; colors and fun! Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography. Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques. Keyboard Kids -An introduction to keyboards. learn music. and practice music theory. Kids in the Kitchen - Become a chef! Experience educational nutrition lectures, food preparation and kitchen safety. Food and supplies provided. Painting Creative - Get creative using different painting techniques to make your very own masterpieces. Speed & Fitness Camp - Work on getting faster and quicker for any sport. Sports Fundamentals- Try a little of each sport and see which one is your favorite. Sports include soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey & tennis. Teen Chef - Enjoy cooking independence in this hands on class and learn valuable kitchen techniques and culinary skills. Food and supplies provided. Tae Kwon Do - Learn the basics of self-defense in a safe and welcoming environment Teen Guitar - Learn proper techniques to play, including strumming and chords. Participant must provide their own acoustic guitar. Tumbling - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and basic back handsprings. Ukelele - Great for beginners and fun to play! Learn chords, songs, and more! Ukelele provided. Youth Archery- Series of classes concentrates on range and safety rules, range courtesy, fundamentals of archery, and is taught using compound equipment. Bows, arrows, and targets will be provided.

The most popular swimming program in the entire Rio Grande Valley is back! Join Gus & Goldie to learn important water safety skills. Each participant will receive an official Gus & Goldie T-shirt and certificate of achievement. Advance registration is required and space is limited. PARENT/BABY (6-18 MONTHS)

Designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers are allowed.

PARENT/TODDLER (18-48 MONTHS)

Reinforces skills learned in the infant level class and progresses to learn more advanced skills age appropriate for a toddler. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers are allowed.

PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS)

Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Youth Level 1 & 2. Designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready.

YOUTH (6 - 13 YEARS)

On the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level. LEVEL 1 & 2 Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level. LEVEL 3 Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water. LEVEL 4 Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught.
