Wild Bunch believes in Hayek’s The Prophet Alex Walton
Walton pushes Sea Of Trees in new Bloom BY JEREMY KAY
Alex Walton arrives on the Croisette with his new company Bloom and will kick off sales on the prestige drama Sea Of Trees from Gus van Sant, to star Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. With backing from Waypoint Entertainment head and producer Ken Kao, Walton has taken his Exclusive Media sales team with him and will continue to sell and service all outstanding titles from the Exclusive Media slate at Bloom. Sea Of Trees, described by Walton as “the most amazing cocktail of emotion”, centres on a widower who travels to the eponymous Japanese forest famed for being the perfect place to die. CAA and WME represent US rights. What is understood to be an amicable arrangement with Dasym Media, the chief owner of Walton’s former employer Exclusive Media, nonetheless foreshadows the eventual demise of US operations at the embattled company. All commitments will be honoured before the production and distribution divisions are expected to close.

Wild Bunch has picked up sales on Salma Hayek-produced Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet ahead of its special presentation in Cannes. Based on the inspirational poem by early 20th century Lebanese writer Kahlil Gibran, the adaptation is currently in post-production. Hayek will present a work-inprogress screening in Cannes’ Official Selection on Saturday. The actress also features in the voice cast alongside Liam Neeson, John Krasinski, Frank Langella, Alfred Molina and Quvenzhané Wallis. The animated portmanteau pic-

Wild Bunch will also show five minutes of Terrence Malick’s ambitious, epoch-spanning documentary Voyage Of Time. “It’s the history of humanity from the Big Bang until today,” said Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval, adding that Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are providing the voiceovers. The company will also premiere Abel Ferrara’s Welcome To New York, starring Gérard Depardieu in a role inspired by disgraced former IMF chief Dominique StraussKahn, in an unofficial screening at Nikki Beach on Saturday.
Indonesian action star Yayan Ruhian (The Raid, The Raid 2) has been cast opposite Hayato Ichihara in Takashi Miike’s return to hardcore genre filmmaking, Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld. Billed as the world’s first yakuza vampire movie, the film is currently in production for a 2015 theatrical release in Japan. Nikkatsu is launching sales in Cannes. The Japanese studio already has an Indonesian connection as it recently co-produced Killers, directed by Indonesia’s Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto. Irons, Miller scale High-Rise Jeremy Irons and Sienna Miller have joined Tom Hiddleston on Jeremy Thomas’s anticipated JG Ballard adaptation High-Rise from Sightseers and Kill List director Ben Wheatley. Oscar winner Irons, who will also shoot Batman vs Superman this year, will play a visionary architect while the in-demand Foxcatcher star Miller will play his devoted aide who strikes up a relationship with Hiddleston’s character.

StudioCanal unveils starry slate BY ANDREAS WISEMAN
At a busy buyers’ screening in Cannes yesterday, StudioCanal announced its involvement on a selection of hot new market titles. The French giant confirmed it has boarded Luca Guadagnino’s untitled thriller inspired by French 1969 classic La Piscine, which will star Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Margot Robbie and Matthias Schoenaerts, with a shoot due in Italy later this year. Previously announced bigbudget action film Bastille Day has
now been cast with Idris Elba and Adele Exarchopoulos, and will shoot in Paris this summer with director James Watkins. Legend, Working Title’s Kray twins thriller from writer-director Brian Helgeland and starring Tom Hardy, is due to shoot this summer with Universal on board for a wide US release. Watkins and Helgeland will be in Cannes later this week to talk to select buyers. StudioCanal also recently announced Tobias Lindholm’s A War.

MK2 has picked up sales on Japanese director Naomi Kawase’s An, about the friendship between a baker and an old lady who bond over their passion for traditional red-bean pastries. The Paris-based company has also acquired Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s supernatural love story Journey To The Shore, about a dead man who takes his wife on one last trip; and Masa Sawada’s documentary I, Kamikaze, revolving around the memoirs of Fujio Hayashi, one of the last surviving co-ordinators of Japan’s Second World War suicide missions. The company has also added French director Christophe Honoré’s Metamorphoses — a retelling of Ovid’s classic poem set in contemporary France using a young, unknown cast. MK2 is also handling Kawase’s Still The Water, a coming-of-age tale set on a remote Japanese island, which will premiere in Competition. “We’re thrilled to be following Kawase. She is one of the most talented female directors in the world,” said MK2’s sales chief Juliette Schrameck. Other titles on MK2’s eclectic Cannes line-up include Olivier Assayas’s Competition film Clouds Of Sils Maria and the Taviani brothers’ in production Wondrous Boccaccio. Kawase’s Kumie Inc and longtime collaborator Paris-based Comme des Cinémas are coproducing An, which was presented at Busan’s Asian Project Market in October.

Korea’s Showbox/Mediaplex has sealed a string of major territory deals for action film Kundo: Age Of The Rampant. Metropolitan has taken rights for French-speaking Europe, while Splendid has taken for German-speaking Europe. The epic action story, about a clan of outlaws who fight corrupt nobles to protect the weak, has also gone to Well Go USA for North America, Kbro Media for Taiwan and PT Prima for Indonesia. Directed by Yoon Jong-bin, the film stars Ha Jung-woo and Gang Dong-won, and is scheduled for release in Korea on July 23. Showbox is also selling Directors’ Fortnight title A Hard Day, an action thriller directed by Kim Seong-hun and starring Lee Sunkyun; and will be showing footage from The Divine Move, a hard-boiled action noir about a professional Go player who seeks to avenge the death of his brother.

Glee star Chris Colfer is attached to lead the cast of the Noel Coward biopic scripted by Bent and Mrs Henderson Presents writer Martin Sherman. Ian McKellen, Vanessa Redgrave and Jonathan Pryce are in talks to join the cast of Noel (working title). The film portrays the early life and influences of the famously flamboyant UK playwright, producer and wit, who penned classics including Private Lives and Blithe Spirit, and who

worked on films including Brief Encounter and In Which We Serve, for which he was Oscar-nominated. The project, which has already attracted sales heat for Metro International ahead of Cannes, is
the second feature from UK director Joe Stephenson, who recently completed Chicken, starring Yasmin Paige, Scott Chambers and Morgan Watkins. Producers are Stephenson with Julia Valentine (The Silent Storm). Executive producers are Colin Vaines, Jane Wright, Jane Hawley, Enfys Dickinson, Daniel Pickering and Andrew Ornitharis. The production is aiming for a late summer shoot in the UK. Colfer is repped by ICM Partners, Coast to Coast and Inphenate.
Luke Evans boards SAS thriller By Michael Rosser
Luke Evans, star of The Hobbit, is to play the lead in an adaptation of Andy McNab action thriller SAS: Red Notice. Nick Love (The Sweeney) will direct the feature, produced by Altitude Film Entertainment, Parabolic Pictures and Vertigo Films. Altitude Film Sales will introduce the project to buyers here today, and will partner with WME Global on US rights. SquareOne Entertainment has acquired distribution rights for German-speaking territories.

criminals in the Channel Tunnel. Laurence Malkin and Chad Thumann wrote the screenplay, based on the bestselling novel by former SAS operator McNab. Malkin, Will Clarke, Allan Niblo and James Richardson are producers, while executive producers are McNab, Mike Runagall, Andy Mayson and Jack Drewe. Daniel Findlay will co-produce. McNab said: “I have admired Nick’s work for years and Luke’s involvement as Tom Buckingham makes this an incredibly exciting project to be involved in.”
Beta Cinema punches with Qurbani’s German riots drama By Geoffrey Macnab
Munich-based Beta Cinema has arrived in Cannes with new pickups including a feature about the violent riots that erupted in Germany in 1992. Beta is launching We Are Young, We Are Strong by young AfghanGerman director Burhan Qurbani. The film, in post-production, recounts the violent xenophobic riots in Rostock from the perspectives of three characters: a Vietnamese woman living in Germany, a young hooligan involved in the riots and his politician father. Devid Striesow, Jonas Nay and Lore’s Saskia Rosendahl head the cast of the
film, which is a UFA Fiction production in co-production with Cine Plus, ZDF and Arte. It marks the follow-up to Qurbani’s Berlinale Competition title Shahada. Also new on the Beta slate is Labyrinth Of Lies, in which director Giulio Ricciarelli delivers a cinematic account of the investigation that led to the first Auschwitz trials in post-war Germany. Beta is also introducing the partly animated English-language family movie Ghost Hunters — On Icy Trails, the adaptation of Cornelia Funke’s bestselling novel that has been translated into 20 languages.

Match Factory strikes for Martel’s Zama By Geoffrey Macnab
The Match Factory has boarded Lucrecia Martel’s new feature, Zama, and will begin pre-sales on the period drama in Cannes. The film will shoot in northern Argentina and Brazil in early 2015. The 2013 Rotterdam CineMartwinning project is based on the 1956 novel by Argentinian writer Antonio Di Benedetto. Set in the late 18th century, it explores the solitary existence of Don Diego de Zama, a highly placed servant of the Spanish crown, who is posted to the capital of remote Paraguay. Zama’s producers are Benjamin Domenech and Santiago Gallelli from Rei Cine, Vania Catani from Bananeira Filmes, and Pedro and Agustin Almodovar from El Deseo, and MPM Film. Martel has established a strong international reputation on the back of her previous features, La Cienaga and Palme d’Or competitors The Holy Girl and The Headless Woman. “Ever since I saw Lucrecia’s debut film La Cienaga in 2002, I have become an admirer of her cinema and wanted to work with her,” said Match Factory managing director Michael Weber. “[She is] one of the most outstanding representatives of ‘New Argentinian Cinema’.”

Ray takes on Secret remake Billy Ray is to direct the remake of Argentinian Oscar winner The Secret In Their Eyes, to star Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gwyneth Paltrow. IM Global hits the Croisette with international sales rights to the thriller, reconfigured as a revenge story focusing on a former MI5 agent haunted by an unsolved case, who discovers a shocking truth. Carlos Carrera, who directed former Mexican foreign-language Oscar nominee The Crime Of Father Amaro, is in production on the Spanish-language story. LatAm Pictures represents Latin American rights to the Lo Coloco Films, Anima Estudios, Alta Vista Films and AG Studios feature. US rights are available. Five Star snaps up Hong Hoon

Thailand’s Five Star Production has picked up worldwide rights to horror thriller Hong Hoon. The contemporary take on a Thai folk tale marks the directorial debut of Kulp Kaljareuk, and stars Ananda Everingham and Thai actress and model Rattanarat ‘Ploy’ Aurthaveekul. A woman believes she lost her father in an accident, but a stranger tells her that he died because he had a wax figure made of himself. The Thai belief — that such figures should never be made until after death — has been explored in radio dramas, TV series and films. According to Five Star, the film is a darker and more stylised spin on the thriller that started out as a radio drama produced by Kantana Group founding father Pradit Kaljaruek. The film, in post for release in June, is produced by Sasisupa Sungvaribud.
Catherine Deneuve has joined the cast of Cannes award-winning director Jaco Van Dormael’s surreal comedy in which God lives in Brussels. The Brand New Testament will star comedian Benoit Poelvoorde as God and Yolande Moreau as his wife. The original story, co-written by Van Dormael and Thomas Gunzig, portrays God as an odious character who is disliked by his family.
His daughter, Ea, decides to run away from home but first hacks her father’s computer and lets everyone in the world know the date when they are going to die. God takes to the streets to find Ea and discovers the horrors of the world he created himself. Produced by Van Dormael, Olivier Rausin, Daniel Marquet, David Grumbach and Frank Van Passel, the film is set up as a Belgium-France-Luxembourg coproduction with a budget of $11.4m.
Ross to run Pantelion
Principal photography begins on July 7 in Brussels and will be shot by Christophe Beaucarne, who previously worked with Van Dormael on Mr Nobody in 2009 and is also known for Mood Indigo and Coco Before Chanel. Le Pacte is selling world rights and will release The Brand New Testament in France. Van Dormael picked up the Camera d’Or in 1991 for Toto The Hero and was nominated for the Palme d’Or in 1996 with The Eighth Day.
Former Lionsgate executive vicepresident of international sales Anne-Marie Ross has been hired to lead the newly launched Pantelion International. The Lionsgate and Mexican broadcaster Televisa joint venture arrives with George Lopez, Marisa Tomei and Jamie Lee Curtis project La Vida Robot. Ross will report to Pantelion CEO Paul Presburger. Jackson, which will have a closed screening for buyers. The company will also introduce buyers to Directors’ Fortnight title Next To Her, the debut feature of Asaf Korman, about a young girl and her disabled sister.
Films Boutique is also selling US film-maker Alex R Johnson’s debut, Texan thriller Two Step; Belgian director Geoffrey Enthoven’s Halfway; and Patchwork Family by Pascal Rabaté, set to be released by Ad Vitam in France on July 9.

Cinéart snaps up Cannes titles By Geoffrey Macnab
Benelux distributor Cinéart has acquired a raft of high-profile titles in Competition here in Cannes. The company has picked up Wild Tales, sold by Film Factory, which this week was also acquired for France by Warner Bros. The US release of Olivier Dahan’s Cannes opener Grace Of Monaco may be uncertain amid rumours Harvey Weinstein is still unhappy with the cut, but it is business as usual in the rest of the world.
Coinciding with its world premiere today, French distributor Gaumont will open the film on 530 screens in France. Lucky Red is putting it out on 350 screens in Italy and SquareOne Entertainment will launch it on
250 prints in Germany. The film is set to hit more than 3,000 screens in China through Content Media while Warner Bros will release it on 250 screens in the UK on June 6. Japanese distributor Gaga has set an October 18 release date.

Splash Entertainment’s Norm Of The North pits the voice of Rob Schneider against The Hangover franchise breakout Ken Jeong. The story follows a fun-loving polar bear and his three lemming pals in their bid to save their Arctic home from a cut-throat developer. Heather Graham and Loretta Devine also star. Trevor Wall directs from a screenplay by Jamie Lissow. Producers are Mike Young, Liz Young, Nicolas Atlan, Steve Rosen and Ken Katsumoto. Vanguard Animation’s Zorgamazoo is based on the children’s book by Robert Paul Weston about a young girl who escapes the clutches of her governess and stumbles upon a magical world.
Arclight arrives in Cannes with sales rights to A Few Less Men, the sequel to its 2011 comedy A Few Best Men. Kevin Bishop, Kris Marshall and Xavier Samuel will reprise their roles. Wrestling a complex story By Jeremy Kay
“It’s the kind of film that’s very funny until it’s not funny,” says Bennett Miller of his US Competition entry Foxcatcher, backed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures and Columbia Pictures. Foxcatcher has been a nine-year labour of love for Miller, ever since he read a newspaper article about a bizarre true-life episode and tried to make the film the followup to his 2005 narrative directorial debut Capote. “It’s the story of John du Pont, who was the heir to the du Pont fortune, and how he came to murder a wrestler,” he says. “It’s set in the mid-to-late 1980s in Pennsylvania. Du Pont is in his 50s, living on a 500-acre estate in the house where he grew up, with his 90-year-old mother living downstairs. “He decides he wants to get America’s best wrestlers to move into the estate and build them a training facility so he can be their
coach and lead them to victory over the Soviets in the [1988] Olympics in Seoul.” After his early efforts to find backers for Foxcatcher foundered, Miller went off and made Moneyball. Afterwards, on the advice of agents, he approached Ellison, the Hollywood financier who is not afraid of backing challenging fare. The young producer-financer committed quickly. Eventually Columbia Pictures would cofinance with Ellison, but it was she who dived in first and who made Miller feel comfortable about pulling out of the initial world premiere gala slot at AFI Fest 2013. Feeling rushed, Miller heeded his producer’s advice and withdrew from the November festival, some 10 months after production had wrapped in Pennsylvania. The timeline offers a hint about the intensity of post-production. “It’s been a huge editing process,” says Miller, who earned an
Oscar nomination in 2006 for directing Capote. “These films are not made in the normal way. I don’t work from a screenplay. The scenes we decide to shoot, we explore in rehearsal and again on the day with the actors. It makes for a much more complicated editing process.” Steve Carell nails it as du Pont, Miller says, because we don’t expect him to inhabit this kind of character. “Steve has a complexity to him and a strain of darkness, awkwardness and intelligence, and it worked. “I cannot imagine anybody in any of these roles other than the actors in there. Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo play the brothers [wrestler Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz] and all three of them are extraordinary.” The film has its world premiere on Monday in Competition. SPC will release Foxcatcher on November 14 and Annapurna handles international sales.
You throw up some shocking facts about Israeli divorce laws and the treatment of women. Shlomi Elkabetz The basis for our film is the absurd fact that in Israel, a woman can’t decide if she wants to live with someone or not. Her husband must choose to give his wife freedom. Ronit Elkabetz Every day I was in shock working on this. It’s very difficult to understand, in the democratic way we live in Israel, that this is still the law.

Are you hoping your film will open discussions about changing the law? SE This law has been around for 4,000 years and it’s not changed an inch. But I hope it will evoke a serious conversation. It will put it into people’s awareness.
Ronit, you also star as Viviane in the film. Was it a challenge mixing two disciplines? RE It’s a big challenge but the more I know, the deeper I can explore the character. As actors, we try to build real life around the characters. For me, it’s been a reality for 10 years.
Did you always aspire to work together as brother and sister? SE It was always our dream to work together. We breathed the same air as kids, we ate the same food, we’ve seen the same sights and we heard the same music. Many of our memories are the same memories. It was always our dream to work together. Is France still a cinephile nation? France has long been a model of cinema-going culture. But with a box-office drop, a dip in production and cinema audiences getting older, Melanie Goodfellow looks at the future of film culture in the digital age

When news of the plan broke in France some commentators said it sounded the death knell for the country’s media chronology legislation, which is one of the cornerstones of its envied film finance and distribution system.

bel Ferrara’s Welcome To New York — starring Gérard Depardieu in a role inspired by the downfall of former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn — is one of the most anticipated films of the year in France. Yet this buzz won’t be building in cinemas. Wild Bunch announced in April it will premiere the film on VoD in France. The move challenges the territory’s media chronology law that demands a four-month window between cinema and VoD release (and 36 months between theatrical and SVoD). It also means the picture won’t be in cinemas. “France is one of the only countries in the world where it’s against the law to show it on VoD and in the cinema at the same time,” says Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval. “The French media chronology laws are idiotic. They were created prior to the internet age and are anachronistic.” The company plans a $1m promotional campaign, kicking off with an event on the fringes of Cannes Film Festival attended by Ferrara and Depardieu, followed by the VoD

Other challenges But the move comes at a tough time for the French film industry on a number of fronts. “The cinema industry is always going through change and you just have to keep adapting but there’s been a perfect storm of two economic factors and one structural one over the last 12 months,” says producer Marie Masmonteil of Paris-based Elzevir, who is also president of France’s Syndicate of Independent Producers (SPI). The economic challenges, she says, comprise last year’s 10 million dip in spectators at the box office, to 192.8 million from 203.6 million, and the introduction of a collective
labour accord for crew that has upped production costs at a time when funding is tight. “A number of commercial French films flopped last year, which has made distributors wary of investing in local productions,” says Masmonteil, noting the French share of the market fell to some 31% in 2013 against 41% the year before. “Added to this the ‘collective convention’ has bumped up costs on lower-budget films by $278,000 (¤200,000) to $416,000 (¤300,000). It’s unlikely we would have green-lit any of our recent films under the new accord,” adds Masmonteil, who produced Un Certain Regard opener Party Girl alongside Elzevir partner Denis Carot. French production is down by 50% year on year, adds Masmonteil, who predicts there are 180 to 200 local films to be made this year against some 270 in 2013. Media chronology is also an issue, although she notes it is not so much VoD as SVoD, which is her syndicate’s chief concern. “We’re not so worried about transactional »

VoD but rather SVoD. We’re lobbying hard for the 36-month window to be retained, rather than reduced to 18 or 24 months as some are suggesting,” she says. “It’s vital the broadcasters come before the streaming services.” Not least, she notes, because pay-TV operator Canal Plus, state channels and private stations such as TF1 and M6 provide some $485.5m (¤350m) worth of finance, while the likes of Netflix and Amazon put nothing into French content. Cinema’s draw Veteran distributor and producer Jean Labadie of Paris-based Le Pacte, meanwhile, doubts Wild Bunch’s initiative will radically change media chronology. “It works for that film because it’s a very particular case and doesn’t involve any French broadcasters,” he says of Welcome To New York, which is produced out of the US. He also holds that the French still love to see films in theatres. “Yes, last year the boxoffice figures were bad but this year they’ve come back. You only need to look at the annual box office which regularly comes close to 200 million spectators to understand we still love cinema,” he says. French cinema has already bounced back this year with a series of hit comedies including Dany Boon’s Superchondriac, which drew more than 5 million spectators, rom-com Serial (Bad) Weddings (Qu’est-ce Qu’on A Fait Au Bon Dieu?), revolving around the theme of multicultural marriages, and found-footage caper Babysitting, which has sold more than 1 million tickets after a slow start. “It’s a $5.5m (¤4m) film that will make $27.7m (¤20m) and we’ve also managed to sell it in a number of territories,” says Olivier Albou of Paris-based sales company Other Angle, which is handling the latter title internationally. “It’s an example of a small, sincere film that has captured the audience’s imagination.”
Babysitting
A bigger cause for concern, says Labadie, is that younger generations are less likely to go to the cinema than they were a decade ago. Studies by the National Cinema Centre (CNC) on audience evolution show cinemagoing in the under-24-year-old demographic is on the wane. In 2012, the six to 10-year-old age bracket went to the cinema on average 3.1 times in the year, against 3.5 in 2011 — this compared with a national average of 5.4 times. Under-25s accounted for 31.5% of the market in 2012, against 43.9% in 1993. The 50-plus demographic increased its share of the market in the same period to 33.2% from 18.2%. “The cinema audience is an increasingly greying one,” says Labadie. “The real challenge for the industry today is how to get younger audiences into the theatre. There are so many distractions. How do we get their attention?” It is a complicated issue to address. The

FRANCE’S BOX-OFFICE REBOUND After a difficult year at the French box office in 2013, in which audiences fell by 10 million, or 5.3%, the market appears to be on the rebound. National Cinema Centre (CNC) figures for the first three months of the year showed an 18.6% increase at the box office for the January 1 to March 31 period year-on-year for a total of 56.3 million admissions. But perhaps the most encouraging news for the French film industry is that the local share of the market came in at an estimated 46.7% in the first quarter of the year, against 40.5% over the same period in 2013. The overall share of the market for French films fell to 33.3% in 2013 against 40.3% in 2012 and 40.9% in 2011. The rebound in the French share of the

market has been spurred by a series of successful local comedies, led by Dany Boon’s Superchondriac, in which the star plays a fortysomething hypochondriac. The film drew more than 5 million spectators and marks a comeback for the star after the disappointing performance of his last picture, Eyjafjallajokull, in 2013. Other French films drawing local audiences included multiculturalism comedy Serial (Bad) Weddings (Qu’est-ce Qu’on A Fait Au Bon Dieu? ), The Date Coach (Fiston), starring Kev Adams and Franck Dubosc, and The Three Brothers Are Back (Les Trois Freres, Le Retour), a Superchondriac sequel to the 1995 hit The Three Brothers.
French government recently introduced a scheme fixing ticket prices for children at $5.50 (¤4), against a previous tariff of $8 (¤6) to $11 (¤8). Early CNC figures suggest 2.5 million more youngsters went to the cinema in January and February, against the same period in previous years. But the scheme angered distributors, who say it eats into their profits while exhibitors only stand to gain through increased concession sales. “The tariff has helped temporarily but once people get used to it and the novelty is over, its impact will plateau and in the meantime it’s having a big impact on distributors and producers,” says Labadie, who says in the long run it could well discourage the production of lower budget, independent family fare. Ironically, as France’s 120-year passion for the moving image is undergoing one of its biggest mutations in decades, its famed Cinématheque Francaise is hosting an exhibition marking the centenary of its late creator Henri Langlois, a founding father of French cinéphilia. The Cinématheque’s current chief Serge Toubiana is philosophical about the changes afoot. “Whenever we do retrospectives, young people flock to the screenings to see classics they’ve already seen — on TV or their computer — on the big screen,” he says. “There’s still something sacrosanct about the cinema theatre — the atmosphere, the darkness, the thrill, the strangeness... The ritualistic aspect of seeing a film in a cinema.” He acknowledges, however, that the way people are consuming cinema on a day-today basis is changing. “Cinema technology has made films more accessible, more visible and given them a longer life,” he says. “Of course France is a cinephile country. I’m absolutely convinced of that. It’s just that the s way we watch cinema is changing.” ■

Cannes with Thunder Road and Black Label Media’s action thriller Sicario from red-hot director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Incendies). Emily Blunt plays a special agent on the trail of a crime kingpin who enlists the support of Benicio Del Toro’s shadowy government operative. Lionsgate will distribute in the US. The slate also includes River Road’s The Last Face, a romance to be directed by Sean Penn. Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem will play star-crossed humanitarian doctors in Africa. IM Global is in town with Civilian, an action thriller starring Jackie Chan and produced by Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road. Peter Segal, whose credits include Grudge Match and 50 First Dates, is directing. The company is also handling

Forsaken (formerly Deserted), which Gravity co-writer Jonas Cuaron directs and is producing with his Oscar-winning father Alfonso. Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are set to star in the battle of wits between illegal Mexican immigrants and a racist vigilante. Mexico’s prolific Alex Garcia produces and Lava Bear’s David Linde is executive producer. FilmNation is selling the sci-fi project Story Of Your Life, in which Denis Villeneuve will direct Oscar nominee Amy Adams as a linguist summoned after an alien crash-landing. FilmNation and Lava Bear are co-financing the project. Begin Again director John Carney’s Sing Street is a semi-autobiographical story about a teenager growing up in 1980s Dublin. It will feature original music by U2’s Bono and The Edge, who will also be involved in the film. Voltage Pictures is on the Croisette
with Knock Knock, Eli Roth’s sexy psycho-thriller which started shooting in Chile in April. It stars Keanu Reeves as a home-alone husband visited by two beautiful strangers. Also on Voltage’s slate is Breaking Through, an innovative coming-of-age story set in the world of competitive dance. Hyde Park International is showing footage from Skin Trade, an action thriller in which Dolph Lundgren plays a New York cop who teams up with Tony Jaa’s Thai detective to avenge his family’s murder. Hyde Park is also representing Oscar-winning effects wizard Robert Legato’s thriller The Haunting Of Eloise. Chace Crawford and Eliza Dushku will star, Tripp Vinson is producing. Annapurna International is in town to showcase The Hollars, a drama that John Krasinski will direct for Sycamore Pictures and Groundswell. It follows a New Yorker forced to navigate the dys-
functional ways of his Middle America home town when he returns to tend to his ailing mother. The slate also includes Charlize Theron action comedy American Express. The company’s slate also includes Home, a drama about an estate agent tasked with selling a property that has a dark past. Glee’s Naya Rivera stars with Catalina Sandino Moreno, best known for Maria, Full Of Grace. Visit Films has taken sales duties on Critics’ Week selection It Follows, the second feature from David Robert Mitchell following The Myth Of The American Sleepover. The story follows a young woman plagued by visions and the belief that something is pursuing her. Magnolia International is showcasing Honeymoon, a thriller starring Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway as newlyweds whose post-nuptials getaway is ruined by strange events. Magnolia is also selling Katemquin Films’ Roger Ebert doc Life Itself. It holds US rights to both titles. It is produced by Alex Garcia’s Anima Estudios and directed by Alberto Mar, whose credits include Top Cat: The Movie. New Films International is showing 10 minutes of footage of James Franco’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel The Sound And The Fury, about the decline of a grand Southern family. Franco stars alongside Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and Tim Blake Nelson. The Exchange is handling The Tank, a horror film about a freaky Mars-mission simulation. It is produced by Glacier Films, the Russian-backed outfit set up a year ago by a group of partners including Hayden Christensen. Diamond Pictures is expecting a lot of interest in Jackie Earle Haley’s feature directorial debut Criminal Activities, starring John Travolta and Michael Pitt. The

Inception Media Group is screening the family animation Almost Heroes, about a mechanic and his robot pals who thwart a robot army. Taylor Kitsch, Jen-

It is also handling Andrea Segre’s First Snowfall, about the friendship between an immigrant and a young local boy in the Italian Alps, which is screening for the first time at Cannes. The company also has footage for Water And Sugar, a documentary about cinematographer Carlo Di Palma. The Open Reel has picked up Argentinian directors Rocio Caliri and Melina Marcow’s Announce Earthquakes, which is set in an Argentinian town hit by a wave of teenage suicides. With Lars von Trier reportedly about to announce a new project and the western Salvation in official selection, Scandinavian powerhouse TrustNordisk is expecting a busy Cannes. The company has snapped up sales rights to Norwegian comedy Here Is Harold, which it will be selling for the first time in the market (the film was acquired at Gothenburg’s Work In Progress sidebar). TrustNordisk CEO Rikke Ennis describes the film, about a furniture salesman battling with IKEA, as a quirky drama in the vein of Hans Petter Moland’s work. TrustNordisk is having a closed buyers’ screening of a promo reel of Susanne Bier’s new drama A Second Chance. Meanwhile, the company is also screening first footage of The Shamer’s Daughter, a $9m fantasy adventure based on Lene Kaaberbol’s bestselling Scandinavian fantasy franchise The Shamer Chronicles. The company is also introducing buyers to Thomas Vinterberg’s The Commune, expected to launch in the autumn. Fellow Scandinavian major Svensk is continuing pre-sales on 1864 — the feature and TV epic directed by Ole
Bornedal and produced by Miso Film. Also being pre-sold by Svensk is comedy Borning, about an illegal car race from Oslo to the North Cape, and Heaven On Earth, the sequel to box-office hit As It Is In Heaven. Svensk’s new, completed films include Colin Nutley’s comedy Medicine and Nils Gaup’s thriller Glass Dolls. LevelK is introducing buyers to topical feature documentary Drone, which looks at the CIA drone programme and explores how pilots are recruited at a very young age at gaming conventions. It is also screening Stephen Lance’s English-language My Mistress, starring Emmanuelle Béart, in advance of its official world premiere at Melbourne International Film Festival later this year. LevelK is also pre-selling Silent Heart, a drama from double Palme d’Or winner Bille August. Also new to its slate is Ben Chessell’s Australian drama Sucker which stars Timothy Spall as a mentor to a Chinese-Australian 18-year-old girl. Yellow Affair is holding closed screenings of Kasimir Burgess’s Fell and JP Valkeapaa’s They Have Escaped, both in post-production. Film Factory is also giving a big international push to romantic comedy Spanish Affair, a runaway local box-office hit in Spain that has racked up 8 million admissions. Meanwhile, Canales is pre-selling action movie Toro from director Kike Maillo and starring Mario Casas and Luis Tosar. 6 Sales is giving a market premiere to 3D horror picture Darker Than Night and to comedy Cantinflas starring Michael Imperioli. Newly active Benelux sales agent T Films, based in Luxembourg, is giving a market premiere to Dick Maas’s genre thriller Quiz and to the new version of US indie drama Syrup starring Amber Heard. Through Asian genre company Elixir, Kevin Williams is selling The Little Match Murder Girl, directed by Naoyuki Tomomatsu, whose credits include Vampire Girl Vs Frankenstein Girl. Williams is also handling pre-sales on Killer Mermaid, the latest title from the same director. Corsan, the producer, sales outfit and Belgian tax shelter specialist, is finally giving a market premiere to Roland Joffé’s long- gestating The Lovers (aka Singularity) and will be continuing to pre-sell Lee Tamahori’s Emperor, now in
pre-production and with Adrien Brody heading the cast. From Germany, Beta Cinema is showcasing local hit family adventure Bibi & Tina, and Michael ‘Bully’ Herbig’s Buddy, “a screwball action romantic comedy” in the words of Beta’s Thorsten Ritter. ARRI Worldsales is in town with the German family film Pettson And Findus — A Little Nuisance, A Great Friendship, which mixes live action and animation, and The Whole Shebang, the latest feature from Doris Dörrie. The Match Factory is on the Croisette with a bulging slate that includes Hungarian auteur Kornel Mundruczo’s White God. The company is also selling Alice Rohrwacher’s second feature, Competition title The Wonders, UK director Andrew Hulme’s debut feature Snow In Paradise, which is screening in Un Certain Regard, and Tribeca success Zero Motivation by first-time director Talya Lavie. The sales arm of the Hungarian Film Fund is introducing buyers to a raft of new titles, among them Szabolcs Hajdu’s neo-western Mirage, Bence Miklauzic’s Car Park, a drama about a feud for a parking space, and Virag Zomboracz’s Afterlife, a comedy drama about a son and his father’s ghost.

Buzz titles Taiwan Taiwanese film-makers face the dilemma of whether to target the territory’s strong local market or the burgeoning Chinese mainland audience. Liz Shackleton profiles some of the key titles available at the Cannes Marché
T
aiwanese cinema has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with local audiences turning out en masse to support a wide range of films from the romantic dramas and comedies for which the island is famous to biggerbudget fare such as Umin Boya’s recent hit KANO, a sports-themed drama produced by Wei Te-sheng. However, Taiwanese producers face the same dilemma as their counterparts in Hong Kong — whether to focus on their relatively small domestic market or cater to the vast mainland China market — but with added sensitivities due to the two country’s disagreement about Taiwan’s political status. Some of the biggest homegrown hits are firmly focused on local audiences — films such as Din Tao: Leader Of The Parade, David Loman and this year’s Chinese New Year hit Twa Tiu Tiann revolve around local culture and humour and use Taiwan’s own dialect of Chinese, rather than Mandarin.

Other productions, such as Doze Niu’s Love and Tsai Yueh-hsun’s Black & White: The Dawn Of The Assault, have successfully travelled to the mainland and other Asian territories. Often these films feature mainland stars — Vicky Zhao Wei starred in Love and Huang Bo in Black & White and its sequel. Benefitting from the warmer trade relationship between China and Taiwan, Taiwanese movies can bypass mainland import quotas under the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), but only 10 mainland films a year are allowed into Taiwan. After a strong showing in Berlin, which premiered Tsai Mingliang’s Journey To The West, Midi Z’s Ice Poison and Cho Li’s Rice Bomber, Taiwan does not have any features in Cannes selection. But as the list here reveals, a mix of arthouse and genre projects are in the s pipeline for later in the year. ■
Giddens Ko has adapted his own novel and executive produced this romantic comedy, which marks the directorial debut of Chiang Jin-lin, his assistant director on You Are The Apple Of My Eye. The story revolves around a student who finds love and friendship while working as a waitress in a café. The cast includes Vivian Sung, Megan Lai, Bruce and Marcus Chang, while Vivian Chow makes a guest appearance as the café owner. Dir Hou Hsiao-hsien Hou Hsiao-hsien’s highly anticipated first foray into the martial-arts genre wasn’t ready in time for Cannes, but is now in post-production after shooting on and off for the past four years. Set during the Tang Dynasty, the film stars Shu Qi as an assassin who questions her loyalties when she is ordered to kill the man she was supposed to wed. Chang Chen and Tsumabuki Satoshi also star. Currently in pre-production, Cheng Wentang’s crime drama Silence tackles issues of social justice through the story of a cop investigating the death of a property mogul. Produced by Taiwan’s Joint Entertainment International and Dreamosa Film, the project took part in last year’s Golden Horse Film Project Promotion and is scheduled to shoot this summer. Cheng’s debut feature Somewhere Over The Dreamland (2002) won the Critics’ Week Award at the Venice film festival. His most recent feature Tears (2007) screened at Busan and Karlovy Vary.
The feature debut of commercials director and Edward Yang protégé Wang Weiming, (Sex) Appeal tells the story of a young girl who leaves home to study music and is pressured into becoming the mistress of her music teacher.
