Changes For Good

W

elcome to the new Mayo! The significant changes in the school have not only surprised all of us, but have also changed our prospective towards life at Mayo in a big way, and the new look of The Mayo Mail is proud to cherish all these changes. As we are a part of the ‘changing Mayo’, it is our moral duty to support our school, criticize the wrong and appreciate the good. Yes, it is obvious to feel uncomfortable with a new routine to follow, but being a sport is not a bad idea. It was impressive to know that the captains and monitors were called earlier than the school’s opening date, for a training camp on leadership. This week, three people addressed the school - Mr. Ramesh Shah (ex-Vice Principal), Mr. Rajan Munshi (Old Boy) and Mr. Vikram Pant (Old Boy). The classrooms are constantly getting better with a whole new seating arrangement and of course, the projectors which have been installed for a better experience of classroom modules. The IT Centre wears a new look with new systems running with better processors. All of us are gearing up for our examinations and activities. It is now that the CCE System is actually coming into play. The most important thing at present is the acute water shortage that Mayo is facing. The present status is horrible Mayo gets water once in 6 days! Let’s try to save water as much as we can. A little compromise now will definitely reward us later, and in the end let’s hope for the better and shout out loud - GO MAYO!

About Mayo, India and Authority

M

r. Vikram Pant (Batch of 1986), visited Mayo College and spoke to the students of classes 9,10 and 11 on Saturday, July 17. His talk focused on the growth and development of India. He illustrated his viewpoint with many case studies. Mr. Pant advised his audience to stay positive and become a part of India’s growth. He insisted that corruption in India is slowly and gradually becoming extinct and that each one of us could make a big change if we tried. His talk was followed by an interesting round of questions and answers. He patiently answered all questions asked from the student community. Mr. Pant maintained that India could become a better place if people respected the authority and pointed out the laziness that Indians show in voting which later results in undeserving leaders and corruption.

lady bought some bathing soaps from a shop. When she opened one of the packets, she found that it was empty. There was no soap in there; it was just an empty wrapper! She lodged a complaint against the manufacturer and got her claim. That being settled, there was a task before the management of the soap factory. How had this happened? How could they ensure that the incident did not occur again? They had suffered enough bad publicity besides having to pay the compensation to the lady. After a detailed investigation, it was discovered, that during the process of wrapping, it so happened that inevitably, one or two wrappers did get through, having no bar of soap in them! There was no way to make out the difference between a full wrapper and an empty one. The process of handling each one separately for this purpose seemed to be very cumbersome. So, the technical head was given the job of devising a method to overcome the problem. The man prepared a detailed report and proposed the setting up of a computer based system that would weigh and scan each bar, for the empty packs would not get detected by a normal x-ray machine. He proposed an expenditure of a large amount to put this system into place. The management heard him out and passed the order to Contd. on Page 3

ONE MAN SHOW All of us dream of one day when we will watch the Indian Football Team in the FIFA World Cup. Maanav Saraf writes a story of one such dream he saw...The Indian Football Team reaching the World Cup of 2026...

R

avi would often go out in the evenings to play soccer with his friends. They would meet in the Dover Park at 4 pm and play till it got dark. As the sun would set they would return home. Ravi really enjoyed soccer and would dream that one day India would feature in the FIFA world cup. Today Ravi's team had a six-a-side challenge match with the White Tigers' side, the most well known football club of the town. Ravi and his team had practiced very hard for this match and wanted to win at all costs. The time had come to display their hard work on the lush green pitch prepared by the school society. Ravi went out wearing his lucky shin guards and goal keeping gloves that were gifted to him by his Uncle. He was determined to lead the team from the front. The school football coach was declared to be the match official. The whistle blew and Ravi's side was pushed on the back foot. Ravi's team tried their level best to break through the tactical play-style, but without hope. The first half whistle blew with the score as 0-1 in favor of the Tigers. Ravi had made some excellent saves that had encouraged the team but the defense was too easy to break for the experienced team. At the end of the first half Ravi called for a team meeting and told the team that they should not lose hope. He strengthened the team's defense by making a few changes and told the team that this was a great opportunity for them to show their talent. These words acted as a magic spell because the quality of football displayed by Ravi's side was so good that not even Ravi believed he could defeat the tigers by 5 goals to 2.The crowd was thrilled as they saw the White Tigers hang their heads in shame. The White Tigers very sportingly

came and shook hands with the skipper, and his team. They were so inspired by Ravi's team that they suggested Ravi to convert his team into a club. From that day onwards Ravi's team came to be famously known as the Royal Bengal Tigers. Ravi's creative captaincy and great goal-keeping helped the country to take Indian football to new heights. Under captain Ravi's tactics the team was able to qualify for the Euro 2020 but failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA world cup losing to Brazil. It was time that the Indian legend retired as he found it very difficult to manage his fitness at the age of 35. His retirement's announcement shook the nation. This sudden decision by Ravi stunned the Indian Football Federation. There were many suggestions and debates going around in the country but the Federation was unable to make a decision about who would replace him. At this moment Ravi boldly stood up and expressed his willingness to coach the Indian National soccer team. The board was delighted and took him in instantly. Ravi's coaching and encouraging words made the Indian team qualify for the 2026 FIFA world cup. The excitement among the Indians was unimaginable. Ravi's team India went on to defeat great teams such as England and Paraguay to qualify for the knockout stages and later defeating USA, Australia and Ghana, India qualified to play with Brazil in the finals of the 2026 FIFA world cup. India defeated the South American nation handsomely to leave a dejected Brazilian side. The Indian victory was celebrated with great pomp and the national hero, coach Ravi was honored with the Bharat Ratna. He became an international soccer icon.

proposed. An uneducated worker said, “Excuse me Sir, for my impertinence, but I have a solution that shall cost a fraction of what you are planning to go in for. The management hesitated initially. But eventually they heard him out and agreed to try out his proposal. The next day, the worker brought a strong industrial fan. He put it at an angle near the conveyor belt on which the packed soap bars were coming through and switched it on. The few empty wrappers that came through got blown off by the fan! The rest of them went past easily. A simple solution, for a complex problem! This goes to prove that ideas are not the monopoly of the educated. Contributed by Mr. Sandeep Mishra (IT Deptt.)

The Art Called ‘Forgiving’

kindergarten teacher decided to let her class play a game. The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag containing a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates, so the number of potatoes that a child will put in his/her plastic bag will depend on the number of people he/she hates. So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had 2 potatoes; some 3 while some up to 5 potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry with them the potatoes in the plastic bag wherever they go (even to the toilet) for one week. Days after days passed by, and the children started to complain due to the unpleasant smell let out by the rotten potatoes. Besides, those having 5 potatoes also had to carry heavier bags. After one week, the children were relieved because the game had finally ended. The teacher asked: "How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for one week?" The children let out their frustrations and started complaining of the trouble that they had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go. Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game. The teacher said: "This is exactly the situation when you carry your hatred for somebody inside your heart. The stench of hatred will contaminate your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go. If you cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what is it like to have the stench of hatred in your heart for your lifetime???" Throw away any hatred for anyone from your heart. Forgiving others is the best attitude to take!
