Attending the University of Kentucky has been the best decision I have ever made. Despite having fire drills in the middle of the night and hiking up 21 flights of stairs to the infamous Kirwin Tower, the University of Kentucky has been way more than just a school. From attending K-Week as a freshman to now writing for my last issue of KRNL, this is a bittersweet moment. Being an undergrad at UK has given me life-long memories: sledding on a broken cardboard box behind Willy T, witnessing Destiny’s Child reunite at the 2013 Super Bowl, crying over sports I do not play, and rallying on State Street, win or lose. As I say goodbye to UK and hello to my inner #BOSS, I hope that you, the reader, continue to thrive at UK and create memories that will no doubt make you the person you’re destined to become.

With spring comes an atmosphere of change at KRNL. As we say goodbye to the seniors who have been instrumental in making KRNL Fashion what it is today, we also welcome new faces to the magazine, as well as new ventures that will make KRNL Fashion a more diverse and engaging platform. One of these projects is the KRNL Spring Fashion Exhibition, Prêt-à-Croyez, which will feature fashion from local boutiques and art from UK students. The show will take place on March 23rd in the SA\VS atrium, and I do hope you can attend. As we celebrate the spring issue of KRNL, brought to you by our much appreciated sponsor, Thoroughbred Printing, we hope you enjoy each spread featuring content, photography, styling, and design from our fellow students. Our photo shoots at Lucky’s Market and The Village at Richmond Woods allowed us to combine the reality of post-college life with the childlike fun that doesn’t just end when you graduate. So as some remain and some say goodbye, we can all keep learning, keep dreaming, and keep believing.

The 90s Carry On The 90s have made a fashion comeback this season, and they show no signs of slowing down. With denim leading the trend, women are embracing everything from denim miniskirts to oversized denim jackets. The return of “mom jeans” also has many women saying goodbye to their love of skinny jeans and hello to a whole new (or old) era. Style Secrets: Keep the 90s look simple with jeans and a white t-shirt, complete with a pair of stylish sneakers.

Wild West Obsessed With high-waisted jeans comes the need for something to hold them in place. Enter: the double buckle, Western-inspired belt. Leather and antique metal are combined to create the perfect accessory, as younger women (like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner) are recognizing the merits of this newly fashionable belt. Style Secrets: A Western belt can go with any pair of high-waisted jeans, baggy or skinny. Grab a sleek bodysuit to complete your look and you’ll be good to go.

Cold Shoulder Off-the-shoulder tops are ideal for the spring season. With a light breeze in the air, they’re perfect for showing off a little skin whether you’re going for a classy or casual look. Style Secrets: Pair your shoulder-baring top with a denim button-front mini skirt for the perfect spring style.

On - The - Go

Beauty Trends Article by Kayla Pigg | Illustration by Heather Calhoun

As an on-the-go college gal, sometimes it’s up to the contents in my purse to do the trick for the day. Luckily for those on the go like me, there are a few tricks and trends this spring that are just for you. Using your lipstick as blush can be a total lifesaver. Whether you wake up feeling like a ghost or you just don’t have the time or energy to make it to Sephora, using a dab of lipstick on your cheeks is a quick and easy way to get the fresh, dewy glow everyone covets around springtime. If you like a more dramatic look but hit the snooze button too many times, try a bold lip. Keeping the face natural, swipe your favorite shade of lipstick and pucker up. It doesn’t take much to make a statement. As long as you have a tube of lipstick, you can conquer the world (or midterms at least). The next time you roll out of bed and realize you’re late for class, a braid is an excellent way to tame your crazy bed hair. Whether you go for a long, fairytale-length braid like we saw at Valentino’s spring shows or micro braids like at San Andrès Milano, you’ll be right on trend.

From the Blog Just over a month after the heartbreaking December death of Vogue Italia editor-in-chief, Franca Sozzani, British Vogue editor-in-chief, Alexandra Shulman, announced that she will step down in the summer. Grace Coddington, the creative director of American Vogue, stepped down last January, and while Anna Wintour is still going strong as Vogue’s iconic editor-in-chief, she is undoubtedly nearing the age of retirement (no disrespect to Ms. Wintour). With massive changes happening in fashion and, accordingly, fashion journalism, one has to wonder: what is the future of fashion? To read the full article, go to KRNLfashion.com. The KRNL Fashion blog provides weekly fashion reviews, updates from the fashion world, and tips for dressing in college. Check it out today!

College isn’t all fun and games – although almost all of us would like it to be. The following spread, shot at The Village at Richmond Woods, features professional clothing suitable for an interview, an internship, or even brunch with friends. Career Women: Proving ‘Pretty’ can be Professional Article by Adrian Swain

As young professionals, it’s not only important to stand out on paper; we must also look amazing in person! The university succeeds in making sure students have the skills and experience to succeed in the workforce. Here at KRNL we want to make sure students look professional and fabulous. Looking professionally chic does not mean you have to spend money on a new wardrobe. Have a pair of slacks and gently worn loafers? Perfect! Now you can

roam your roommate’s closet and borrow one of her button downs (with permission, of course). When it’s warm, pull out your favorite Keeneland dress and pair it with a borrowed blazer. For additional pieces you might need, Wildcat Wardrobe is a new student government initiative that allows students to donate business attire to other students. For college students living on a budget, Wildcat Wardrobe takes stress away from paying for an interview outfit

and allows more time to search for jobs and prepare for interviews. Only accepting apparel that is dry-cleaned, Wildcat Wardrobe makes sure students will look their best in the professional world. If you’ve outgrown certain pieces or no longer need them for your new job, consider donating items to Wildcat Wardrobe. Denim has been a fashion staple for decades, and it’s easy to see why as there are so many different ways to wear it – from high-waisted jeans and miniskirts to oversized denim jackets. If you’re bold enough, rock denim-on-denim (think Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the AMA’s in 2001). The waistline of jeans has slowly risen higher and higher over the past few seasons. In 2017, high-waisted jeans have never been higher, making the 90s comeback official. When the weather starts to warm up, expect to see a variety of denim miniskirts, from light and dark washes to buttons (instead of zippers) on the front.

Lastly, we can’t forget about the timeless denim jacket, an essential piece that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. The style this season is a slight crop (where your high-waisted jeans stop) with the sleeves rolled up. Pair your denim jacket with a lace choker and hoop earrings, and you’ll nail the 90s comeback look.

With this year’s warm winter and early spring, summer is bound to make waves – heat waves that is. KRNL’s summer-inspired shoot at Lucky’s Market is a testament to that expectation, displaying summer clothes that will keep you cool even in the hottest of days. Article by Jessica Torres

Off-the-chart music and off-the-shoulder fashion – what more could you love? Nothing screams summer more than Coachella trends, patriotic fashion and beach waves, so whether you’re on the beach or at a music festival, stay trendy in the summer heat! This summer, you can’t go wrong with classic Boho fashion, but try adding an 80s twist. Throw on a touch of floral or make a statement with a bell-sleeved crop top. Let your accessories take center stage while you keep cool under the sun. Yes, that means bold rings and Boho hats. As for bottoms, does distressed denim ever go out of style? Don’t forget to bring out your overalls and that

vintage tee you have hanging in your closet. Spice up your outfit with a small fringe purse or sew-on patches. You can never go wrong with a pair of round sunglasses and a dainty necklace, so goodbye skinny scarfs and hello chokers! As the holiday approaches, jump into the Fourth of July with patriotic fashion. A classic white off-theshoulder top paired with high-waisted jeans can go casually with sandals or you can dress it up with chic wedges. Whatever your fashion inspiration is this summer, be sure to show it off on Instagram. You can even tag us in it @krnl_fashion!
