“Styles come and go. Good design is a language, not a style.” - Massimo Vignelli Design is a journey of discovery. A good design is not just look and feel; it is a balance of form and function. Design is the silent ambassador of a brand or destination, creating a mental image and conveying a specific message. In this edition, we take you to some of the most inspiring hotel designs and destinations, offering a feast for the senses and an unforgettable journey. This journey takes us from the “Timeless Charm” of Amanjiwo, with a tranquil atmosphere that evokes the past majesty of ancient Javanese kingdoms, to “A New Season in the Capital,” with the glamorous return of Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta to the Indonesian capital with an all-suites hotel that offers impeccable luxury accommodation; from the “Stylish Sofitel” of SO Sofitel Bangkok, which combines modern dynamism with classic wonder in a true meeting of East and West, the result of an amazing collaboration between an award-winning architect and the world’s top designers, to “Heavenly Westin,” the highest hotel in Indonesia and the epitome of comfort and luxury. Check out “Awe-Inspiring World Cities” and discover the magical quality that allows them to inspire creativity. Whether it’s their geographical location, famous buildings, design landmarks, landscape or the lively and artsy people, these are some of the best cities in the world to be inspired. Design is much more than just buildings and country. Head to OKU, the premium Japanese restaurant at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, which offers a modern take on Japanese dishes with a unique philosophy that cooking should reveal the “life story” of what you eat. Each dish here is beautifully designed, pleasing to both your eyes and your taste buds. I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did preparing it for you. Happy reading

Drive de Cartier Instinct, independence, elegance – these are the qualities of the Drive man, an attitude and a mindset that are not just about existing, but about knowing how to live. This is a man who cannot be categorized, who seems natural on first impression, but is more sophisticated than he initially appears. His watch is worn as a reflection of the man, rather than for status; the same applies to his passions, which he steers, as he would his car, appreciating the beauty or the skill involved. The Drive de Cartier is the watch of a man of passion and continues the longstanding tradition of Cartier watches with distinctive shapes. Over and above a strongly defined character, the aesthetic emphasis of the Drive de Cartier watch changes with each different model. Its case, in pink gold or steel, is fitted with a black, grey or white guilloché dial marked by Roman numerals punctuated with sword-shaped hands. The transparent case-back reveals the Manufacture movement 1904 MC, available in two versions: hours, minutes, small seconds and date for the 1904-PS MC; and second time zone, day/night indicator, large date and small seconds for the 1904-FU MC. The Drive de Cartier watch is also available in a Fine Watchmaking version, with a flying tourbillon 9452 MC. Certified Poinçon de Genève, this watch is assembled and set in the Cartier Fine Watchmaking Poinçon de Genève workshops, at the Cartier Boutique at 35, Rue du Rhône in the heart of Geneva. The watch has been created in accordance with the most prestigious of all watchmaking certifications, testifying to Cartier’s excellence in Fine Watchmaking.

Westin Wellness Escape Text by Dennis Latif | Photos courtesy of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacific

O

n 25 – 27 February 2016, Westin Hotels & Resorts hosted an amazing Wellness Escape at The Westin Langkawi Resort and Spa, Malaysia, curated and hosted by the regional television personality, wellness author and speaker Jojo Struys, as the brand’s newest well-being brand advocate. The Wellness Escape is part of the Westin Well-being Movement, a campaign introduced to enhance the well-being of guests and associates around the world through a series of healthy activities, food and workshops. The six pillars of well-being at Westin – Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Well, Work Well and Play Well – are thoughtfully implanted in the itinerary of this 3-day, 2-night Wellness journey to ensure that participants feel their best throughout the escape and by the end of the journey.

Feel Well To feel well, one must understand what obstacles and challenges may distance them from feeling well. Especially in today’s fast-paced, hectic world, stress almost always gets in the way of wellness. The “Manage Your Stress Before It Manages You” workshop with Jojo Struys helped participants understand their stress, its symptoms and triggers. Another option to improve wellness is to experience the Heavenly Spa by Westin signature treatments to renew mind and body. The Heavenly Massage or Malay Traditional Massage will take guests on the most unforgettable wellness journey ever.

28

MAXX-M

Eat Well The journey to a well-balanced body and mind is not only influenced by outside factors but also from the inside. Like old the proverb says, “You are what you eat.” At Westin, guests are treated to antioxidantrich and naturally low-calorie SuperFoodsRx dishes and Westin Fresh revitalizing juices and smoothies curated by the experts at The Juicery, packed with nutrients and energy to help guest meet the daily challenges of life. A 4-course dinner beneath the stars is also available on request, the healthy superdelicious dishes complemented by fine wine for a memorable dinner.

Move Well Guests are invited to soak in the morning sun with some simple yet challenging yoga stretches and breathing techniques overlooking the vast ocean with an experienced in-house yoga instructor. The gentle yoga moves and stunning natural scenery will drive your stress away, leaving only a clear mind and good feelings to start the day.

Work Well Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? This beautiful resort offers six elegant and spacious conference spaces. The Westin Grand Ballroom can accommodate theatre-style conferences for up to 400 guests. There are also four banquet suites – Synergy, Strategy, Vitalize and Recharge – for smaller groups. The Float, a magical venue stretching far into the ocean, is the perfect spot for

Feature

private dinners where guests can mingle and enjoy the setting sun amidst the gentle lull of waves from the Andaman Sea.

Play Well Gunung Raya trail is the perfect spot to experience Langkawi’s famed flora and fauna. The one-hour jungle trek was challenging and interesting at the same time. After a quick warm-up of stretches and energizing breathing exercises with Jojo, participants were pumped to experience everything Gunung Raya trail has to offer. A sunset dinner cruise can also be arranged on the luxurious 70foot Freedom yacht, where guests can sip cocktails and wine over pleasant food, against the stunning backdrop of a setting sun and the emerald waters of the Andaman Sea.

Sleep Well A good night’s sleep is the perfect closure to an extraordinary day. “The Art of Relaxation and Sleeping Well,” hosted by Jojo, took guests through a series of breathing and relaxation exercises to prepare them for a good night’s rest. The event, hosted on Westin Heavenly Beds set by the beach, was truly unforgettable, the gentle movements and soothing breathing combining with the tranquilizing sound of the sea to becalm the mind and chase away busy thoughts.

The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Land of a Thousand Temples Thailand is a land of culture and customs, full of temples and palaces. Thai people appreciate beauty in every form and this is reflected in the design of the buildings and structures throughout the land. 3600 massive water fights. All the celebrants, young and old alike, participate in this tradition by splashing water on each other. It was an exciting opportunity for me to see what locals do on New Year’s Day, while exploring the country and admiring the beautiful palaces and temples. Buddhist temples in Thailand are known as “wats” and the architecture of these wats has seen many changes over the course of history. Although there are many differences in layout and style, all the temples adhere to the same general principles. A Thai temple, with few exceptions, consists of two parts: the Phutthawat (the area dedicated to Buddha) and the Sangkhawat (containing the living quarters of the monks). Multiple roof tiers are an important element of the Thai temple. The use of ornamented multiple tiers is reserved for roofs on temples, palaces and important public buildings. Two or three tiers are most often used, but some royal temples have four. The use of multiple roof tiers is more aesthetic than functional.

I

t was the second week of April when I visited Bangkok, when people in Thailand are preparing for the annual Songkran festival, famously known as the Water Festival. The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolism; it is a Thai New Year’s festival after all. Morning begins with merit-making, so visits to local temples to offer food to the Buddhist monks is common. Although Thai New Year’s Day falls on 13 April every year, the holiday period includes 14 - 15 April as well. During this holiday period Thailand attracts tourists who want to experience the festival up close and personal. Songkran is mostly celebrated by young people, with major streets closed for traffic and used as arenas for

In addition to temples, Thailand has a great number of royal palaces around the country. Most Thai palaces were built during the reign of the current Chakri dynasty, which started in 1782 with the founding of the city of Bangkok and the start of the Rattanakosin era. A number of palaces and royal mansions are open to the public, while some are still in use by the royal family and are open to visitors only occasionally. With Bangkok being the capital city and residence for the Chakri dynasty, many of the palaces were built in this city. Traditional Thai architecture, which has been influenced by Burmese, Chinese, Indian and Khmer styles, is very recognizable and has taken centuries to evolve. Characteristics include multitiered rooflines, the use of distinctive colours like red and gold, and very detailed ornamental decorations and murals, often telling stories from the life of the Buddha. Some good examples of traditional Thai architecture can be found in the Grand Palace in Bangkok, which is the first stop in our journey.

The Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha The Grand Palace is a must-see in Bangkok. For 150 years the palace complex was home to the king and also to the entire government, including the country’s war ministry, state departments and the mint. Thai kings stopped living in the palace around the turn of the 20th century. However, the complex still remains the seat of power and the spiritual heart of the Thai kingdom. Wat Arun

Wat Benchamabophit

Palace has an area of 218,400 square metres and is surrounded by walls built in 1782. The length of the four walls is 1,900 metres. The outer court, near the entrance, used to house government departments in which the king was directly involved, such as civil administration, the army and the treasury. Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located in one corner of this outer court. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the most famous Buddhist temple in Thailand, and at the heart of the temple itself is a fabulous Buddha image, carved from a single piece of jade. This image is the holiest and most revered of religious objects in Thailand today. Meanwhile, the central court is where the residence of the king and halls used for conducting state business were located. Only two of the throne halls are open to the public, but you will be able to marvel at the exquisite detail on the facades of these impressive structures. The inner court is where the king’s royal consorts and daughters lived. The inner court was like a small city entirely populated by women and boys who had not yet reached puberty. Though no royalty currently reside in the inner court, it is still completely closed off to the public. Despite the proximity of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, there is a distinct contrast in style between the very Thai Temple of the Emerald Buddha and

34

the more European-inspired design of the Grand Palace (except for the roof, which is very Thai). Other highlights of this complex are Boromabiman Hall and Amarinda Hall, the original residence of King Rama I and the Hall of Justice.

Wat Arun Wat Arun, known locally Wat Chaeng, or the Temple of Dawn, is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. It is easily one of the most stunning temples in Bangkok, with a design that is very different from other temples in the country. Wat Arun is partly made up of colourfully decorated spires and stands majestically over the water. This Buddhist temple is an architectural representation of Mount Meru, the centre of the world in Buddhist cosmology. In the mythology of Tibetan Buddhism, Mount Meru is a place that simultaneously represents the centre of the universe and the single-pointedness of mind sought by adepts. Thousands of miles in height, Meru is located somewhere beyond the physical plane of reality, in a realm of perfection and transcendence. The four-corner prang of Wat Arun, which houses images of the guardian gods of the four directions, reinforces this mystical symbolism.

Wat Lan Kuad

Wat Benchamabophit Wat Benchamabophit is also known as the Marble Temple, for the gleaming white Carrara marble from Italy of which it is constructed. The most modern and one of the most beautiful of Bangkok’s royal temples, Wat Benchamabophit is also notable for its use of European design. Unlike the older temple complexes in Bangkok, the Marble Temple has no central wihaan or chedi (Buddhist stupa). Instead, it has many smaller buildings that combine European influences such as stained-glass windows with traditional Thai religious architecture. The main bot (ordination hall) contains a golden Buddha statue against an illuminated blue backdrop. Beyond the main bot is a cloister containing more than 50 bronze Buddha images in many different styles, representing various Buddhist countries and regions. Behind the cloister is a large Bodhi Tree, bought from Bodh Gaya as a gift to King Chulalongkorn.

Wat Lan Kuad Wat Lan Kuad, or Temple of a Million Bottles, is one of the most unique temples in Thailand. It is located in Sisaket province, roughly 600 kilometres northeast of Bangkok, and is made from more than a million recycled glass bottles. True to its nickname, Wat Lan Kuad literally features glass

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

bottles all throughout the premises, including the crematorium, surrounding shelters and even the toilets. The bottle-collection-turned-building started in 1984, when the monks used the bottles to decorate their shelters. The shiny building material attracted more people to donate more bottles, until eventually they had enough to build the temple standing today. Bottle caps are also used as decorative mosaic murals. Going beyond the use of glass as a sustainable building material, the bottle bricks don’t fade, let natural light into the space and are surprisingly easy to maintain. There is an estimated 1.5 million recycled bottles built into the temple, and as you might have guessed, the monks are committed to recycling more. After all, the more bottles they get, the more buildings they are able to construct.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep The holiest shrine in northern Thailand, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is approached by a steep flight of 300 stairs flanked by green trees and guarded by 16th-century Naga (dragon) figures. An easier, if less atmospheric, route is via an adjacent funicular. This temple is part of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, a richly forested area supporting 330 species of birds. The park also includes Phuping Palace and Mon Tha Than Falls, the latter believed by some to contain evil spirits. Travel & Design

Wat Sri Suphan

Wat Rong Khun

Wat Rong Khun

Doi Suthep Mountain rises about 1,000 metres above sea level, and there are fine views over the city of Chiang Mai to be had from the temple’s lower terrace. The terrace is surrounded by large bells that are rung by pilgrims to bring good luck, and in the northwest corner of the terrace is a statue of the legendary elephant that chose the site of the temple. Enclosed by a frescoed cloister, the upper terrace is home to a tightly packed complex of small shrines, bells, golden umbrellas and Buddha statues. Shoes must be removed and shoulders must be covered before entering this sacred area. In the centre of the upper terrace is the great chedi, a 16th-century expansion of the 14th-century original. The dazzling gold-plated temple is modelled on Wat Phra That Haripunjaya in Lamphun, formerly the greatest temple in the Chiang Mai region.

Wat Rong Khun, better known among foreigners as the White Temple, is an unconventional Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai. This remarkable temple is a bizarre blend of traditional Thai architecture and the surreal. The main building is painted white to symbolise Buddha’s purity and is covered in mosaics of mirrors, sparkling in the sun. All around the complex are intricate sculptures of demons, skulls, severed heads handing from trees and other bizarre objects. To reach the temple, guests must cross a bridge over a moat filled with innumerable sculptures of outreaching arms, apparently symbolizing desire. Once inside, visitors are greeted not by traditional Buddha life scenarios but by contemporary scenes and icons of popular culture. Instead of paintings of gods fighting demons, the artist decided to take rather unusual manifestations of good and evil and put it into a Buddhist context. Murals of Batman, Superman, Predator and even Keanu Reeves as Neo from The Matrix are seen in the interior. One unfinished wall is dominated by an image of a plane smashing into the Twin Towers. On another wall there are paintings of spaceships and a scene depicting a cataclysmic event annihilating planet Earth. Amidst this scene of destruction and chaos, surrounded by golden flowers, sits a peaceful white Buddha in front of an even larger Buddha who is surrounded by angelic deities floating in some celestial kingdom.

Wat Suthat Thep Wararam

Wat Rong Khun is still a work in progress and will be for years to come. It is planned to comprise nine buildings including the ubosot (chapel), pagoda, hermitage, crematorium, monastery hall, preaching hall, museum, pavilion and restroom facilities, which will be built on an area of about three acres.

Wat Sri Suphan Located in Chiang Mai province, Wat Sri Suphan, or the Silver Temple, is one of the oldest temples in the area. Built during the Mangrai dynasty in 1500, the temple has been renovated and redesigned a number of times. In 2004, under the abbot, Phra Kru Phithatsuthikhun, rather than using standard temple renovation techniques, utilized the skill and knowledge of local silversmiths. This is most evident in the design of the main ordination hall. The result is a silver-coloured building that shimmers in the sunlight and is full of intricate details. The architecture is Lanna style and most of the work was carried out using alloy and zinc, with precious silver being reserved for the holy images. These three-dimensional images portray stories of Buddhism, Dharma puzzles and the history of the temple.

Wat Suthat Thep Wararam Wat Suthat, famously known for its towering red giant swing that stands at its entrance, is one

of the oldest and most impressive temples in Bangkok, a royal temple of the first grade, one of 10 such temples in Bangkok. It features an elegant chapel with sweeping roof, magnificent murals and exquisite hand-carved teakwood door panels. Wat Suthat is perhaps more famous for the giant swing than its impressive interior architecture. Standing at 21.15 metres between Wat Suthat and Bangkok City Hall, the swing’s two towering red pillars and elaborately carved crossbar are unmistakable from afar. As for the temple, the cloistered courtyard, surrounding the main chapel, boasts 156 images of Buddha along the outer walls and four entry gates individually handcarved with intricate details. The wall frescoes inside the main chapel, detailing the previous 24 incarnations of the Buddha, employed Western painting technique with perspective science, which is unique to this temple. Lining the outer walls are Chinese stone sculptures and eighttier hexagonal pagodas, believed to have been shipped as ballast with the Chinese trade junks. The exquisite detail, architecture and beautiful design of Thailand’s temples and palaces are truly a feast for the eyes. For anyone who appreciates art, culture and religious and royal history, this particular destination is definitely for you. After all, Thailand is the land of a thousand temples.

I

was captivated by Tokyo from the time I landed at Narita International Airport. After a red-eye from Jakarta, I landed in the morning and continued the journey to downtown Tokyo, which took another 90 minutes. My hotel was in Akasaka and it became my base to explore Tokyo. So, come with me and discover the city formerly known as Edo.

Iconic Shibuya It’s not officially a trip to Tokyo if you don’t visit Shibuya. This famous intersection, with its cool spectacle of giant video screens and neon, includes Shibuya Station and the iconic Hachiko

Near the intersection is Shibuya Station, a terminal for a number of rail lines, including the JR Yamanote, Saikyo, Tokyu Toyoko, Den’entoshi, Keio Inokashira, Tokyo Metro Ginza, Hanzomon and Fukutoshin lines. This is a prominent downtown area of Tokyo rivalling Ginza, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Asakusa. Shibuya is unique, with every street having a completely different atmosphere. Shibuya

Centre Street is crowded with a multitude of shops, including youth fashion shops, fast-food restaurants and game centres, and it is famous as the place where new trends are born and quickly spread among youth nationwide. It is always crowded day and night, mostly with teenagers, and you can get a feel for today’s Japanese fashion trends here. Not to be missed is Hachiko Square and its statue of the loyal dog Hachiko, who spent nine years waiting for his master outside Shibuya Station. His inspiring story brings many visitors to the square for a picture in front of the statue. Near

the statue is a small museum about the statue and Shibuya Station, including a series of photos that show the construction of the station.

Sacred Sensoji Temple Tokyo is home to numerous temples that are not only places of worship, but also tourist destinations. Sensoji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple and one of the most visited spots in the city. Located in Asakusa, Sensoji receives almost 30 million visitors each year. As you approach Sensoji, you will pass along a street called Nakamise Dori, which stretches from the outer gate to the temple’s second gate. This street is lined with shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, snacks and trinkets. In the surrounding neighbourhood, you can find man-powered vehicles called jinrikisha, or pulled rickshaw, which are ideal for exploring Asakusa.

Day Trip to Kinugawa Kinugawa, a city outside Tokyo, is famous for Edo Wonderland and Tobu World Square, which transport visitors back to the Edo era, with its typical villages and depictions of ninja life. To reach Kinugawa, you can catch a trail from Asakusa Station, with the trip taking about two hours. From Kinugawa-Onsen Station, you can take a shuttle bus to the tourist sites.

Entering Edo Wonderland, there is a path to the wooden traditional houses, restaurants and souvenir shops. There are street performances and live performances in a special arena showcasing ninja action, complete with fighting moves and techniques. This park was inspired by the Edo period, or the Tokugawa period. The Edo period was between 1603 and 1868, when Japanese society was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. Another attraction in Kinugawa city is Tobu World Square, about 10 to 15 minutes from Edo Wonderland. Tobu World Square is home to the world’s most famous structures in miniature. From Japan there is Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Station, Toshodaiji Temple, Tokyo Dome, Tokyo National Museum Main Building & Art Gallery and many more. There is also the Empire State Building, the Parthenon, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Great Sphinx, Angkor Wat, the Forbidden City and Taj Mahal. Central Asia’s Cultural Crossroads Reopen The ancient Silk Road once ran through Kazakhstan’s mountain passes and across its near-endless steppes. Today, the nation is enjoying newfound fortunes and is proving once again to be a fascinating cultural crossroads for intrepid travellers. By Nick Walton

t’s mid-morning and within the incense smoke-laced confines of Almaty’s Ascension Cathedral worshippers pray silently to gilded saints that tower high above. Resolute against Kazakhstan’s harsh winters and scorching summers, the cathedral, the world’s secondtallest wooden structure, remains a beacon for the faithful of the nation’s former capital, an ancient trading city wreathed by jagged mountain ranges and the emptiness of the Taukum Desert. Almaty is a fascinating place; the largest city in Kazakhstan and home to many of the country’s

18 million inhabitants, the commercial capital is a cultural melting pot like no other. A gateway between the “Stans” of Central Asia and the Far East, Almaty proudly preserves its rich legacy as a vital way station on the ancient Silk Road. The tsarist-era church, also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a multi-generational meeting place. Old, stooped babushkas, bundled in layers of brightly coloured fabric despite the last of the summer warmth, and young couples in jeans and T-shirts worship before a magnificent golden iconostasis painted by Nikolai Khludov,

lighting candles as a bushy-bearded orthodox priest watches from a corner. It’s a serene and timeless scene, save for the occasional chirp of errant smartphones, as residents step through the entrance arch and make the sign of the cross, heads bowed solemnly, before finding a pew or an altar and some welcomed respite from the bright morning sunshine outside. It’s into the sunshine I wander, leaving the faithful to their prayers, emerging into the dazzling colours of the city’s Panfilov Park, one of Almaty’s many green belts. The park is popular with both locals and visitors, who take selfies before the candy-coloured cathedral, wander the manicured gardens and visit the moving, Soviet-styled memorial to the Panfilov Heroes, 28 soldiers who died outside Moscow fighting the Germans. At the heart of the park an eternal flame burns for the soldiers of past battles, their faces depicted beautifully in molasses-hued marble, illustrating in detail the myriad ethnicities that call Kazakhstan home. In many ways Kazakhstan is also emerging into the light of a bright future. A fascinating country of contrasts and contradictions, Kazakhstan has one foot in its rich and often turbulent past and the other stepping towards new prosperity as

46

MAXX-M

its many natural resources are tapped and hard currency begins to chase away the shadows of the Soviet era. This new era for the country can be seen all over Almaty, where new hotels and commercial towers reach for pale blue skies and the streets are packed with Land Rovers, Mercedes and Porsche SUVs. There are luxury country clubs and housing developments, and a sleek new Ritz-Carlton hotel will soon be joined by other big brands as investment flows in. The new-look Kazakhstan can also be seen in the national carrier, Air Astana, which has already reached the coveted heights of the Skytrax four-star airlines, joining the likes of Air New Zealand, British Airways and Qantas as it opens up the country to the world beyond. Not that Kazakhstan is a stranger to visitors, both voluntary and otherwise. From the days of the Silk Road to Stalin’s forced relocations, Kazakhstan has offered welcome respite to people from across Asia and Europe, from ethnic Russians and Chinese, to Ukrainians, Uighurs, Bulgars and Tatars, and Almaty’s diversity is best seen at its Green Bazaar, a fascinating food emporium at the heart of the city, where the vital ingredients of many regional dishes can be sourced direct from the producers.

3600

Surrounded by stout, Soviet-era apartment blocks and tree-lined boulevards (Almaty is one of the greenest cities in the world, with expansive green belts like the Park of the First President breaking up the urban crawl), the market has the architectural ambience of a Communist-era public swimming pool, with green-hued tiles and beams of bright afternoon sunshine reaching from high skylights to concrete floors polished with the passing of generations of hungry shoppers. The sprawling market is divided into various sections; there are butcher aisles where horse steaks, a national favourite, are prepared alongside fresh lamb sausages, and deli counters where cured meats and caviar are presented in towering piles. In the vegetable section pomegranates and the largest apples I’ve ever seen gleam in the sunshine (Almaty is the ancestral home of the apple), and in the dried goods corner nuts from Persia and Afghanistan are piled high next to dried figs and apricots from the steppes. There is also a long line of Korean stalls selling authentic delicacies, from vibrantred kimchi to ddukbokkie rice cakes, evidence of the many ethnic Koreans who have called Kazakhstan home for generations. Nearby spice stalls are ablaze with colour as the flavours of the Far East continue to migrate west as they did on

the Silk Road. For the intrepid, the Green Bazaar is also a great spot to try some of Kazakhstan’s more daring delicacies, from kymyz, fermented horse milk, to shubat, fermented camel milk. As the sun begins to settle in the sky and the lights of the weathered Ladas and gleaming new Land Rovers come on, I head to Gakku, one of the city’s leading Kazakh restaurants, to see how all that mouthwatering produce can be employed. Seated in a traditional Kazakh yurt, I’m protected from the evening winds, which whip down from the mountains as the light drains from the sky. It’s the perfect chance to feast on a host of authentic local dishes, from beshbarmak, slow-cooked mutton and horse meat with long silky noodles,

the national dish, to assyp, a lamb’s heart, lungs and rice, wrapped in fat and steamed in a Kazakh take on haggis, and chiburekki, parcels of pastry stuffed with beef that proved the perfect snack for ever-moving nomads. For a better perspective on Kazakhstan’s new fortunes, I head the next morning to the Zaiilisky Alatau mountains and the Shymbulak ski resort. We climb steadily away from the city, the suburbs of Almaty quickly replaced by dense forests, the towering peaks growing larger in the windscreen. The modern cable car that climbs the peaks soars over the top of the Medeu, an iconic outdoor speed skating and bandy rink located in the valley below the resort. First built in 1949, the stadium, as well as the alpine resort high above, was revitalized in time for Kazakhstan’s hosting of the 2011 Asian Winter Games. The Medeu also welcomes the annual Voice of Asia music festival during the summer months. Two-thirds of the way up the craggy peaks, Shymbulak could be in the Italian Alps or on the flanks of Canada’s most popular runs. There are chic international restaurants with fusion menus and old and new world wine lists, and clutches of well-heeled locals and tourists basking in the sun at al fresco tables, enjoying views that reach far down to the new skyscrapers of Almaty.

48

Despite the flow of new money into Kazakhstan, or perhaps because of it, preserving the region’s traditional culture is in vogue. In the alpine valley below the resort, Kazakhstan’s rich nomadic hunting culture is maintained at Sunkar Falcon Farm, where Pavel Pfander, a Kazakh-German falcon trainer, thrills visitors with the hunting displays of his falcons, griffin vultures and massive golden eagles. He explains the breeding and training process, and the traditional use of birds of prey by the nomads for hunting, before unleashing the birds, some the size of small children, on a series of mock hunts, the birds taking turns to swop from the heavens, their feathers dusting the heads of the crowd as they pass. Further down the mountain I stop in at Alasha, a traditional Uzbek restaurant capped with glistening blue domes favoured during the day by the city’s idle rich and at night by its power brokers. We dine on horsemeat salad and plov, a traditional dish of rice, lamb and raisins cooked over open fires, amidst beautiful Timurid architecture that smacks of Arabian Nights. With billowing curtains protecting us from the afternoon sunshine, teenage girls with raven hair and dark brooding eyes drink tea, smoke shisha and gossip in hushed voices in the booths that line Alasha’s terrace. It’s a far cry from the perception of Kazakhstan abroad,

3600

one of a backwards nation that’s still mired in its Soviet past while struggling towards modernity. But that’s the beauty of Kazakhstan; it’s balancing its rich culture while navigating rapid progress, and much of that new prosperity can be seen in Astana, a short flight north. The city, which was renamed and thrust from town to capital status in 1997, couldn’t be more different from the mountain-ringed trading city of Almaty; miragelike, there is the shimmer of new commercial towers and apartment blocks; wide, proud boulevards planned by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa that stretch towards the horizon; and grand palaces and monuments, including the Norman Foster-designed pyramid-shaped Palace of Peace and Reconciliation and yurt-shaped Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre (home to an indoor beach), as well as the Central Concert Hall, one of the largest in the world, designed to resemble a dombra, a traditional Kazakh instrument. Everything is shrouded by the hesitant silence of a newly minted park. A City of Peace recognized by UNESCO, Astana is preparing for its time in the spotlight; the city will host the 2017 World Expo, welcoming

an estimated three million visitors, many from far beyond Kazakhstan or its surrounding Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) neighbours. The theme of the expo will be Future Energy, with a focus not only the future of energy, in which Kazakhstan will play an increasingly important role thanks to vast oil, natural gas and coal deposits, but also on the energy of this emerging, captivating destination. From the top of the Bayterek, an observation tower at the city’s centre themed on the mythological Tree of Life, it’s as easy to see how far the city has come as it is to imagine how far Kazakhstan’s ambitious first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, whose palm print is set in gold within a giant gilded orb atop the tower, might take it. At the nearby world-class National Museum of Kazakhstan, visitors can journey through the country’s often tumultuous past before watching Astana grow from the floor in a fascinating light and sound display. But for now, from the city’s highest point, billiard table-flat steppes wreath the sparkling new city and sprint into the distance, bringing a sense of Kazakhstan’s nomadic heritage to its bright new future.

ituated between the royal capitals of Solo and Yogyakarta, just a few minutes’ drive from the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world, Borobudur Temple, nestles Amanjiwo, a luxury resort where the artistic traditions and spiritual legacy of Central Javanese culture resides. With the Menoreh Hills rising up behind it and no less than four volcanoes punctuating the horizon, including Mount Merbabu and Mount Sumbing, this remarkable resort lies in its own natural amphitheatre offering its timeless charm to guests.

cover story

Heart of Amanjiwo In homage to Borobudur, Amanjiwo’s major architectural motif of circles, squares and crescents echoes the temple’s design, keeping alive the centuries-old patterns of grand temple architecture. The heart of Amanjiwo itself is a spherical limestone monolith topped by a soaring, bell-shaped rotunda. This main building is framed by 36 free-standing suites arrayed in two deep crescents. Domed roofs, lofty ceilings and terrazzo floors lend elegant shape to the suites. Interiors include a four-pillar bed on a terrazzo platform, sungkai wood screens, coconut wood and rattan furniture, batik pillows in classic Yogyakarta style, traditional glass paintings and sliding glass doors, and a sunken outdoor bathtub in a walled garden setting. All rooms include an outdoor kubuk or pavilion, with a daybed, and most suites offer views of Borobudur. Private swimming pools grace 15 of the suites. The remarkable two-bedroom Dalem Jiwo Suite is a discrete compound, complete with a private entrance, an entertainment rotunda and its own 15-metre swimming pool fashioned of pale-green Javanese stone set into the rice fields, and a private butler.

Engaging Activities “The Art of Doing Nothing is also the Art of Amanjiwo,” but for guests looking for something a bit more active, the resort has plenty to offer. Take a splash in its gorgeous 40-metre outdoor swimming pool overlooking the Menoreh Hills and the rice fields of the Kedu Plain, or have a soulful lunch and refreshing cocktails at the colonnaded Pool Club. Afternoon tea is served at the Bar, built within a soaring rotunda, the peak point of the resort, where you can enjoy a delightful selection of traditional cakes and snacks

with hot local tea. A gamelan orchestra performs nightly during dinner at Amanjiwo’s Dining Room, the resort’s all-day dining restaurant that offers Indonesian and Western cuisine in an open-air setting overlooking Borobudur Temple, with its antique-finished and silver-leaf ceiling. The traditional “Makan Malam” is not to be missed, as this set menu allows guests to enjoy an authentic degustation dinner menu of Indonesian traditional foods, including starter and dessert. Experiencing the sunrise at Borobudur Temple is a must. Just minutes from the resort, the inspiring view of the sun rising between Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi amidst the ancient stupas of Borobudur Temple is phenomenal. Follow this with an informative tour and learn the deep meaning behind the Borobudur’s famous carvings, sculptures and architectures. A onehour drive from Borobudur Temple is Selogriyo Temple. This less-touristy area offers magnificent views of lush rice fields, with Mount Sumbing looming in the background, on the way to the temple. Every step on this journey is through a delightfully picturesque landscape that captures the ancient beauty of Central Java. On special evenings, Amanjiwo arranges guest visits to Candi Mendut for semadi, an ancient Javanese form of silent meditation. Culture dominates resort activities and guests can also visit Magelang, about a 30-minute drive from the resort, to experience the city’s mouth-watering local dishes and inspiring galleries and museums. Fire Element settings are located on the lowest floors, designed by Rujiraporn Pia Wanglee. The Fire section is where Red Oven is located, the all-day dining restaurant that features a wide array of dishes reminiscent of market-style food with a contemporary twist. The signature Red Oven stove is the symbol of this element. The Metal Element floors are located above the Fire Element, designed by Somchai Jongsaeng. This element symbolises purity and modernity, with a collage of metals, whites and glasses. Metal Element rooms transcend space and time.

T

he Westin Jakarta, the newest 5-star hotel in Jakarta, has captured the hearts of travellers. Not only does The Westin brand guarantee an excellent stay, but it is where you know that you can relax, refresh and experience total renewal. Known as the highest hotel in Indonesia, The Westin Jakarta occupies floors 50 to 69 of the Gama Tower. My wonderful experience started when I walked out of the lift that took me straight to the lobby on the 52nd floor of the building. The view of Jakarta from this vantage point left me breathless. I have seen Jakarta many times from a high vantage point, but the sheer height of this building gave me a different view of Jakarta. I never realized the true beauty of this city before I stepped foot in The Westin Jakarta. The lobby’s design, as with the whole hotel, is utterly fabulous! Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates, one of the world’s leading hospitality interior design firms, The Westin Jakarta’s interior is inspired by natural, organic forms and textures that interpret the landscape and are translated throughout the hotel through floral patterns, including the chandeliers and artwork. The hotel’s design can be described as contemporary, with elements that hinge upon traditional Indonesian motifs such as ikat patterns in the metal screens. I was appointed to one of the 272 inspiring guestrooms with uninterrupted views of the city. The room was perfect. What made it so for me was the world-renowned Heavenly® Bed. I experienced the best sleep of my life in this bed. Specially designed for The Westin, the all-white Heavenly Bed will envelop you in sheer comfort, providing you with ample body support and lulling you to sleep undisturbed by movements. The 10 layers of bedding consist of a pillow-top mattress, finest quality linen with 250 thread-count sheets, a lightweight goose-down blanket, goose-feather pillows and a luxurious goose-down duvet that transported me to another realm.

Sleep and food – two of the most important things in life! And after uninterrupted sleep, I was ready to pick from four unique dining venues that offer a variety of culinary options alongside the brand’s nutrient-rich and delicious SuperfoodRX menus. Seasonal Tastes, the all-day dining restaurant, presents buffet and à la carte options featuring local and international cuisine with seven live cooking stations. I enjoyed nutritious treats and a gourmet cup of coffee from the Daily Treats menu. After a superb dining experience, I headed to the 50th floor to unwind in the indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and steam while enjoying the exquisite skyline view. This is the perfect spot to re-energize and refresh your senses. Later this year, Henshin, a game changer for the Jakarta dining scene, is going to open. Perched on the top three floors of the building, it will feature Nikkei cuisine with Japanese-Peruvian flavours prepared by specialty chefs. You can also enjoy drinks at the rooftop al fresco bar featuring Crafted at Westin, the brand’s signature beverage program that features a fresh selection of expertly mixed cocktails infused with natural ingredients and local flavours. At The Westin Jakarta, every aspect of your stay has been carefully thought through and designed to help you feel calm, relaxed and secluded from the distractions of the everyday world. Providing travellers with modern, luxurious comfort and the best views of Jakarta, The Westin Jakarta is the perfect oasis in the city. The Westin Jakarta Jl. Awe-Inspiring World Cities

Awe-Inspiring World Cities Few cities in the world possess the magical quality that allows them to inspire creativity. Whether it’s their geographical location, famous buildings, design landmarks, landscape or the lively and artsy people, these are some of the best cities in the world to be inspired.

Berlin Photo courtesy of Wolfgang Scholvien Since German reunification, Berlin’s role as the capital of a united Germany and its openness to the world’s diversity have created the ideal conditions for innovation and creativity to flourish. In 2006, the German capital was officially designated a UNESCO City of Design, marking the city as a booming capital of modern design that attracts creative entrepreneurs from around the globe with its eclectic and vibrant lifestyle. The city offers artistic freedom, extraordinary exhibit spaces and people who are interested in design and open to new ideas. This surely makes Berlin the perfect city to hunt for inspirations.

Cape Town Photo courtesy of City of Cape Town Crowned the focal point for the international design community in 2014, Cape Town shines as a world design capital and the first city on the African continent to be handed the title. Cape Town took over the title from Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Visitors to one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs, Woodstock, can see the busy harbour to the north and the majestic Table Mountain to the south. But most people wandering around the area are not here for the views; with its craft stores, art markets, theatres, artsy streets and award-winning restaurants, Cape Town is a hot address for young urbanities.

Awe-Inspiring World Cities

Rio de Janeiro Photo courtesy of Carentario Rio de Janeiro is a huge city with a vibrant creative industry that offers a perfect balance between bustling urban living and remarkable natural scenery. It is not uncommon to see people biking to work with their swimsuits under relaxed work clothes. If the beach is not your thing, you can always hit the bars for happy hour. People of Rio are known for being hardworking, building some of the most inspiring works in the country while still enjoying life outside of the office. Like locals say, if commuting past mountains, lagoons, beaches and centuriesold architecture every morning doesn’t inspire you, nothing will.

Tokyo Photo courtesy of FewJapan The capital of Japan is a thriving and bustling hub of creativity, fashion and culture, with a particularly edgy art scene. Everyone who has visited this vibrant city will agree that Tokyo is a mix of visual landscapes. The hyperkinetic power and telecommunications cables that snake through the city and permeate every scene; the use of bright colours for public barriers and signs; the beautiful cherry trees in almost every corner of the city; the amazing fashion sense of Tokyo residents; the occasional stunning piece of architecture. Tokyo is a treasure chest that offers no end of inspiration, a place where you can discover something new every time you step out of your house or room.

Melbourne Photo courtesy of Visit Melbourne Though geographically Melbourne is far from the most influential design hubs of the world, its culture, creativity and innovation remain significant and relevant on an international level. The city has a sense of mystery and intrigue about it. Visitors can stumble across Melbourne’s many gems; they are hidden in laneways, rooftops or underground. It is the one of many factors that makes Melbourne such a great place that draws inspiration through its every corner. This coastal capital is home to 19th century buildings and tree-lined boulevards, yet its centre is strikingly modern, with plazas, bars, restaurants and cultural events along the Yarra River. Melbourne surely has a charm all its own.

Exceptional OKU OKU, the premium Japanese restaurant at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta, offers a modern take on Japanese dishes with traditional flair and a unique philosophy that cooking should reveal the “life story” of what you eat. The innovative OKU menu has been carefully crafted by Chef Kazumasa Yazawa. We started with the Karasumi Pasta with Bottarga and Red caviar, followed by Green Salad. For the mains, we started with the Salmon Confit in Teriyaki Sauce, with beautifully crafted pickles shaped as flowers. The beautifully cooked salmon melted in our mouth. For the second course, we had the Truffle Gyudon, the juicy beef complemented perfectly by black truffle sauce in runny onsen egg. Little wonder this is one of OKU’s most popular dishes. On Top of the City The General Manager of The Westin Jakarta, Mr Arun Kumar, spoke with MAXX-M about Jakarta’s hotel market and what the highest hotel in Indonesia has to offer as the newest addition to the capital’s upscale luxury hotel market. 78

MAXX-M

profile

Most of the new hotels in Jakarta in the last couple of years have been in the upscale and luxury market. What about Jakarta is such a draw for such hotels including The Westin?

Jakarta is gaining recognition as a city, but as a market it is still maturing and still has some way to go before it becomes a mature market. There is still a lot of room to grow. Jakarta is still developing and is an attractive investment destination for people. Real estate prices are not yet that high, so it is not prohibitive. What Jakarta has is great corporate business; that is a big chunk of business in the city, especially for the five-star segment. There is a little bit of a leisure business in the weekend, but it seems that this city is not yet a very leisure-driven market. What is your personal opinion of the Jakarta market? What do you think Jakarta needs to grow the leisure market?

As I mentioned before, Jakarta is mostly a corporate market. But of course there is also a leisure market in the city, though it still has room to grow. Some people visit Jakarta for weekend getaways, such as people from other Indonesian cities who come to Jakarta primarily for shopping, which is great. But the price point they set for accommodation is pretty much in the three- to four-star market; very little in the five-star. We can start pitching Jakarta as a leisure destination like other cities, for example, Singapore, which does very well during the week as a very corporate city, and on the weekend people from neighbouring countries go there for shopping. We need this segment of people (leisure-driven) to come also to Jakarta. Everybody, including my kids, wants to go to Singapore because there is a lot for them to do. We need to generate these kinds of things as we move forward. I know there are many development projects going on now and I believe that as these projects are completed the leisure market will start growing. Of course, besides shopping, Jakarta still has so much to do and we still have a lot of room to develop the city as a leisure destination. What is a typical day like at The Westin for guests who come for leisure?

The hotel has a stunning pool and spa, which are big attractions for people who come here for a weekend stay. From The Westin you can easily go pretty much anywhere in Jakarta. It’s easy from here to reach any premiere shopping mall in Jakarta, as we know shopping is one of the draws for people who come to Jakarta. We

also have the Run Westin programme, through which we help guests with their exercise routine. We also have a weekend programme called the Westin Weekend, where guests can stay as a family and when the parents enjoy the spa or any other leisure activity in the hotel he kids can have an exciting experience at our Kids Club. We also provide late checkout for people depending on their needs. Can you explain a bit about the hotel design? What was the consideration in making the hotel so high?

Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates, one of the world’s leading hospitality interior design firms, The Westin Jakarta’s interior was inspired by natural, organic forms and textures that interpret the landscape, and are translated throughout the hotel through floral patterns, including the chandeliers and artwork. The hotel’s design can be described as contemporary with elements that hinge upon traditional Indonesian motifs such as ikat patterns in the metal screens. The flow of energy is what we really thought of when we designed this hotel. We wanted to have the feeling that every room in the hotel is connected, having a kind of synergy. The best reason behind our decision to make the hotel this high was the view. We occupy twenty floors on the top of the building and as we move higher the perception of the hotel might change. The view of the city from these top floors is not something that you can experience every day, but as the highest hotel in Indonesia, we do a really good job of showcasing this beauty. There are floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere in the hotel and guests can always see these remarkable city views from any corner of The Westin Jakarta. How many rooms are open? And what is the highlight of the hotel?

When we opened on 26 August 2016, we had 125 rooms open and we will add more floors as we go forward. The upcoming event will be the Grand Opening of the hotel, and by then all the areas of the hotel will be ready, including Henshin, the star attraction of the hotel, built on the rooftop. Henshin is a three-level Peruvian-Japanese restaurant including al fresco bar, lounge, dining room and private rooms. Henshin is located on the top floor dome-shaped structure of this hotel. If you imagine slicing this dome in half, one side will be for Henshin and the other side is for function space. So that is going to be the highlight of this hotel.

Make Things Happen Vincent Ong, Senior Director, Brand Management at Asia Pacific Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., recently spent time with Dennis Latif to talk about his career in the hospitality industry, the most interesting part of his work and the five different Starwood Hotels & Resorts brands within his authority. tell us about your work?

What do you love most about your job?

My duty overall is about brand management and this brand management involves how do we position the brand and market it to target consumers. So my main responsibilities involve ensuring that the experience that we give to guests is a good one or even a great one. At the same time, we ensure that the guest experience is “on brand” and concretely communicate the brand’s positioning to consumers. An on brand experience means people can correctly identify the brand. So my job is to make sure that happens because nowadays it is about taking a brand to the higher level.

Every day is different. Because right now my job is primarily branding, one day I can be here talking with you and having a great conversation, the next day I could be talking with agencies to plan the next campaign, and the next day I could be talking about the strategy for bringing our brand to the next level in one, two or three years. So what I love most about my job is the flavour of how things change or my work changes day to day. The purpose is how we want people to see our brand or the journey that the brand should take to reach the next few levels, but how we get there is different every day. So I think it is because there is a lot of excitement and unpredictability that makes the job very interesting to me.

There are five different Starwood Hotels & Resorts brands within your authority, i.e. Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Four Points by Sheraton, Aloft and Element. Could you tell us the characteristics of each brand? What makes them unique from the others?

We all start with the guests. For Westin, our guests are achievers, people who are really looking out for themselves; they make decisions and choices that will enhance their wellbeing. So, our Westin brand is positioned in such a way that we deliver wellbeing solutions and options for when they travel. The Sheraton guest is someone we call a modern traveller. These are people who really want to make things happen. They are ambitious and have lots of goals, and when it comes to achieving their ambitions or goals, they are the ones doing it themselves. So, Sheraton is positioned as what we call “Effortless Travel,” whereby we provide solutions to give back time to guests so they can experience more of the destination or more of their stay. The Aloft brand was developed to target millennials. It is very focused on design and has a lot of spirit that appeals to Generation Y. For example, in the lobby space everything is integrated, from the lobby lounge, bar and reception, it’s all about flowing energy. We have free and fast wi-fi with seating that invites people to sit and hang out in the lobby. Throughout the entire hotel there is reliable and fast connection, music, technology and design; everything is about providing solutions to meet the requirements of Generation Y. The Four Points brand is for independent travellers, people who do things on their own. That means, for example, it is not about having a butler service; these people prefer to do most things themselves. To them, it is great to come back to the hotel and there is a great bar and beer, and they can just unwind at the hotel after a long day. The Element brand is all about going green, so every single hotel is built green from the ground up, and they all have green certification. It is targeted at guests we call healthy actives, who know that every decision they make will have an impact on the environment. Even though they are not activists, they are very conscious of their decisions. The Element experience is how the entire hotel is built in such a way that we welcome natural lighting, so we have large windows; basically we bring the outdoors to the indoors. We have bikes to rent, every single hotel will

As native of Malaysia, can you share your thoughts on the development of the tourism industry in Langkawi, Malaysia?

Well, in my personal opinion, as a Malaysian, I have seen how Langkawi has progressed over the past 10 to 15 years. It has a certain charm to it. For example, if I compare Langkawi to other Islands in the world, this place has its own characteristics. Langkawi not only has a lot of energy, people enjoying the nightlife, clubbing and partying, but it also has a lot of natural secrets; you actually have to rent a car and drive around the island to uncover all the mysterious and exciting places here. There are not only interesting cafes, bars and restaurants, but also caves, tombs and natural sites steeped in local myths and legends. People can also take a lot of great pictures here without all the crowds because the tourist attractions are so well distributed across the whole island. If you are not planning a long trip, whether for Malaysians or international tourists, this island is the perfect place for a staycation. There are lots of international flights coming in and there are frequent flights from Kuala Lumpur as well. You will have a unique experience because you will get a sense of typical Malaysian culture and cuisine on this island and at the same time it is an international destination. Do you have any favourite quotes?

I wouldn’t quote someone famous but I read this somewhere and I kind of like to use it as my own mantra or motto: “I believe in seeking moments whereby we can inject humanity into the experience.” There is a lot of technology out there today that is taking over our lives. It is good in terms of making us more connected, but finding your own space to get away sometimes is difficult. Plus, the hectic lives we lead can be overwhelming if we let work control all our time. So I believe that with every single moment that we have, like both of us sitting here together, trying to enrich the experience and injecting some level of humanity into the experience. So I am always trying to inject humanity into every single thing that I do, every single interaction that I have, whether it be with friends or family, and I think that quote helps me do it.

Be Impressive Made Suwenten, the Director of Human Resources of The Dharmawangsa Jakarta, opens up about his goals and responsibilities, his passion for Mind’s Navigators and motivating people, and what makes The Dharmawangsa Jakarta so special. profile

As the Director of Human Resources at The Dharmawangsa Jakarta, can you briefly describe your goals and responsibilities?

First is to ensure that the Personal Management in the company goes well, in terms of administration and employment, so all employees are treated well and according to their rights under the laws and regulations that apply in this country. This can happen by applying the principle “treat people as humans” or “humanize humans”. This is how the company treats and honours every employee that works here, so they will do the same to the guests. Second, based on the idea that the company should compete well in the market, we not only rely on the brand, but more important are the people behind the brand. So my role is to develop every employee in this company so they are competent and strongly competitive. This can be done by training and coaching, not only from me but also from every manager in every division/department. I train them to be able to be good coaches, especially for those who have an interest in this field (training and coaching), so that they can become certified trainers as well. When we have developed our human resources, then developing our organization will be easier, because the people are ready for any challenge that comes and any new system or change. My third responsibility is to make sure the image and culture of the company are well implemented, the vision and mission are accomplished and all of the company’s activities are in line with the company’s strategy. Besides that, I am also a business partner of top management in this company by giving them advice related to human resource matters. How do you accomplish the vision and mission of the company and make sure all the activities are in line with the company’s strategy?

The trick is to ensure that each employee has a clear job description and that there is a Standard Operating Procedure for each department. I also developed a Service Level Behaviour campaign consisting of three elements: Personalize Service (treat people as humans), Attention to Detail (be focused), and Be Impressive (competent). These are the guidelines for employees to maximize their potential in this company. You graduated from Udayana University majoring in tourism science. What made you interested to pursuing a career in human resources? How did you get into this field? And how have your Mind’s Navigators abilities and techniques contributed to your journey?

managers and top executives of the company. At that time, my thinking was very simple: “I want to be like them.” Without realizing it, my desire entered my subconscious and made me work even harder. The desire to be a success got stronger and at the time I did not realize that I had implemented a technique called “modelize the success of others.” I was then appointed as an assistant trainer, and two years later I was unexpectedly offered the chance to become Personnel and Training Manager. Before deciding to accept the offer, I imagined what I would do and feel in the position. At that point, I did not know that this was a visualization technique. I was extremely happy in the position to receive my first salary, and felt that the position was an achievement for me. However, I knew that I still had a lot to learn, so I bought a lot of books related to my work. Soon I faced my first challenge in my new position, when the employees at the company where I worked were protesting the management. At that time, because I was not yet sure what to do, I sat down with the protesters (who happened to be my colleagues as well) to find out the reasons behind the demonstration, which I then conveyed it to the company. I realized that the best way to solve a conflict was to mediate and understand the emotions of others. Thanks to these experiences, I quickly learned about Human Resources Management. What is the most interesting part of your work?

It is interesting to see that what I am doing now has a real impact and gives immediate visible results to the company. For example, I heard there were a lot of glitches when I first started working in this hotel, which made guests give less satisfied feedback to the management. But now we have noticed that there is much more positive feedback from guests. Aside from that, I always thought that what makes someone a great person is if he or she can make other people great too. From that point of view, I started to take an interest in how we can synergise with other people, and without realizing it I started to teach people. The most interesting thing is seeing that what I give to others can make other people better. So when I accepted the position as personnel and training manager, I could make myself a facilitator for them, and many of them succeeded, making me happier. One last question, what is the best feature of The Dharmawangsa Jakarta, in your opinion?

The Dharmawangsa Jakarta excels in every aspect of hospitality, from beautifully design building, prime location and excellent service. But what I love most about this hotel is its sense of elegance and homey feeling. The soul of The Dharmawangsa Jakarta shows in every element of the property. The design is very local, classy and everlasting.

My first job was completely unrelated to my major in college or human resources. While I was working there, I met many people who were competent in their fields, managers, general

e Meridien Jakarta has proudly stood in the heart of the city’s prime commercial district for many years and the property is still the preferred destination for those in town for business or pleasure. The timeless, intimate charm and luxury of an international 5-star hotel in a traditional Javanese setting makes Le Meridien stand out from every other property in the city.

Newly Renovated Rooms There are a total of 396 rooms and suites at Le Meridien Jakarta, including the fresh-faced Premier rooms, a new room category at the hotel. There are also Superior and Deluxe rooms, Junior, Executive and Diplomatic suites, Presidential suites and the remarkable Rumah Kudus penthouse. Natural light greeted me as I entered the Premier room, with the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking vibrant Jalan Sudirman, making the room feel more spacious. The newly renovated room features a chic and stylish modern interior, with traditional touches. There is a work desk and ergonomic chair, a stylish lazy chair and small table with a bowl of welcome fruit, announcing that this room was designed to cater to all of your need, whether for work or relaxation. Free high-speed internet, flatscreen LCD TV, iPod dock, laptop safe, media hub, rainforest shower head and extensively stocked mini-bar ensure a pleasurable stay.

Mouthwatering Cuisine Le Meridien Jakarta offers an intriguing choice of dining venues, including an international buffet, Japanese restaurant and authentic Lebanese cuisine. La Brasserie, where breakfast is served, is an all-day dining restaurant offering a sumptuous international buffet in a stylish environment. Le Rendezvous Lobby Lounge is truly a centre of attention, with Indonesian architecture overlooking a natural garden setting; this is a favourite choice for guests to sip a refreshing

cocktail or a cup of coffee. A traditional Japanese restaurant, Ryoutei Aoi Japanese, offers set course and à la carte menus expertly prepared by the experienced chefs, with eight private tatami rooms available. The famous mille-feuille cake is one of many reasons I love Le Meridien Jakarta and it is available at La Boutique Gourmande, a chic cake shop that offers freshly baked breads and mouthwatering cakes. Another dining highlight is Al Nafoura, an award-winning restaurant offering authentic Lebanese cuisine served up in a setting that will transport you to the country. I enjoyed the freshly grilled seafood and meat at Al Nafoura outdoor terrace.

Things to Do All the facilities at the 5-star Le Meridien Jakarta are thoughtfully designed for your comfort. There is much to do and experience, from dining at more than five F&B outlets, swimming pool, 24-hour gym and health club, sauna, complimentary high-speed internet access, to the newly renovated Sasono Mulyo Ballroom with a spacious pre-function foyer to host all your memorable occasions. As for me, I chose the one-hour traditional massage at Le Spa. All the treatments are performed in private rooms; one of the treatment rooms features a large Jacuzzilike bathtub for hydrotherapy sessions. The skilful hands of the therapist and wonderful smell of lavender massage aromatherapy oil eased my sore muscle and relaxed my mind. This short escape to Le Meridien Jakarta truly recharged my spirit to face another busy week ahead. I left Le Meridien Jakarta with a big smile and good memories. Le Meridien Jakarta Jl. Jend. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with a welcome cookie instead of welcome drinks, mouth-watering indulgence of chocolate and peanut goodness. Things were definitely off to a good start. After the satisfying snack, we headed to our room on 12th floor, the Hilton HHonors floor. We were staying in a Deluxe Suite, a large space with separate living room and bedroom. The spacious bathroom is adjacent to the bedroom, dominated by elegant white marble, with his and hers washbasins, rain shower and bathtub. The room also has its own balcony and small pantry adjacent to the living room. We freshened up a bit before heading down for lunch. OPEN Restaurant, the all-day dining buffet restaurant located on the ground floor, offers an impressive selection of food, from Western to Indonesian dishes, including sushi and sashimi, grilled blackpepper crayfish, gado-gado and so much more. After a delicious lunch, we could not wait to plunge into the large outdoor lagoon-style swimming pool. Relaxing on the floats by the pool is just what I needed to unwind and forget about another busy week. You can indulge yourself with a freshly made milkshake or ice cream with choice of toppings from the colourful soda parlour-themed island bar located in the centre of the pool. I chose the cold fresh fruit from the bar to go with the sunny day. After a good splash at the pool, we headed to the Executive Lounge on the 17th floor for afternoon cocktails before dinner. My colleague and I had

a good talk over wine, cocktails and tapas. For dinner, we headed to Sea Grain Restaurant and Bar on the 3rd floor. This modern casual dining venue has indoor and outdoor seating areas and a bar with beautiful views of city skyline, which is perfect as a place to chill after dinner. We had a delicious Octopus Salad and Pomelo Salad for starters, followed by Rendang Lasagne and Steamed Seabass with Buttersauce for the main course, accompanied by fresh sangria. I love how they mixed a Mediterranean-inspired menu with local dishes, all created with super-fresh ingredients, creating a deliciously unique flavour that will make you crave more. The next day, breakfast was served in Open restaurant, with a mix of Western, Asian and local dishes including the Indonesian classics porridge, soto mie and more. There was also an assortment of pastries and fresh juices. We headed to the Spa after breakfast to work out any remaining kinks. I chose the 60-minute Natural Healing Relaxing Spa Massage to ease those sore muscles. The Spa has three massage rooms in total, all with a couple’s bed, bathroom and large Jacuzzi. n 6 May 2016, Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran celebrated its 3rd anniversary after having officially opened its doors to guests in May 2013. In its third year of providing guests the highest quality standard of services and facilities, the resort kicked off the celebrations with several activities and entertainments highlighting and celebrating Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran’s momentous occasion. Amidst a garden of tropical trees and flowers, beautiful mermaids from Mermaid.Inc adorned the saltwater lagoon and the fairy tale-themed sounds of Bali Classical Lounge helped create a magical atmosphere. The opening ceremony began with the release of 50 colourful butterflies, adding to the picturesque beauty of the tropical plants, wooden sculptures and stunning golden sunset. Against the backdrop of the famous golden sunset of Jimbaran Bay, two of Bali’s most talented designers, Air Resort & Swimwear and Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace, showed off their finest creations worn by models from Yongki Model Management. Guests discovered the beauty of some of Bali’s traditional dances including fire dance performances by Dwi & Eka Indonesia Mencari Bakat, while guests savoured the delectable offerings of the resort’s talented chefs and food and beverage professionals. Too light up the evening, the playlist of talented DJ Shissy Bvlgary gave a different vibe to the night.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Director : Ben Stiller Cast : Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, John Daly, Sean Penn

To see the world, experience adventure and confront danger, to see behind walls, find friendship and love, and to feel; that is the purpose of life. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a meaningful story that encourages the audience to dive into the unknown and to be extraordinary. Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) leads a humdrum existence, daydreaming of excitement, when he unexpectedly sets off on a true adventure of a lifetime. Perhaps the true star of the movies is the gorgeous, ethereal beauty of Iceland, whose glaciers, volcanoes, black sands and waterfalls provide a fitting setting for a movie about finding the wonder in life.

The Bucket List

Director : Rob Reiner Cast : Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes Have you found joy in your life? Has your life brought joy to others? These two questions begin the story between corporate billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and working-class mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman), who have nothing in common except their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room, they decide to escape and tick off all the items on their bucket list before they die. For 90 minutes, we see Edward and Carter travel around the world, from Egypt to China, to Paris and Tanzania. Together they see the world, live their wildest dreams and conquer their biggest fears. The Bucket List captures fabulous and famous landmarks around the world that you will want to put on your own bucket lists as places to see before you die.
