LOVE IN THE BOX

JUST THE TWO OF US

Grab a Bite of Love Sweets and cakes, who doesn’t love them? It is love at first bite with the delightful treats whipped up by the pastry chefs at The Park Lane Jakarta. No matter how you slice and dice it, food and love are inextricably linked.

Romancing Switzerland Snow-capped mountains stand out against a dazzling blue sky, creating the perfect backdrop for green foothills and picturesque mountain lakes. If heaven can be found on earth, it can be found in Switzerland.

The Centre of My Heart Your guests will spend hours sitting at the table during your wedding reception, so why not give them something beautiful to look at.

In the Mood for Romance We visit three of the most romantic resorts in the Maldives to discover the future of the world’s favourite Indian Ocean playground.

Rustic Chic The reception is the pinnacle of any wedding celebration and it has to be perfect, down to the smallest decorating detail. Rustic chic has become one of the most popular themes for wedding receptions. The wooden tables, unfinished wooden chairs and rustic decorations will surely create picture-perfect moments.

Eat, Love and … Sometimes we underestimate the magic of a romantic dinner, treating it like ritual or a requirement. But darling, a romantic dinner isn’t just a romantic dinner. It makes you a better lover, someone who makes the effort to celebrate your love.

EDITOR’S LETTER

Now & Forever “Marry your best friend. Marry someone who you wouldn’t mind waking up to every day for the rest of your life. The one who makes you glad to be alive. Marry someone who drives you crazy. The one who frustrates you. The one who calms you. Marry the one you don’t mind fighting with, because they will be fair about it. Marry someone who makes you the best version of yourself. The one who believes in you, even when you don’t. The one who stands by you, through thick and thin. Marry someone you can’t imagine your life without. Marry the one you are insanely in love with. And the one who is insanely in love with you. Marry the one who knows what you want to say, when you’re too tired to say it with words. The one you can spend comfortable silences with from time to time. Marry your soulmate. Marry your best friend.”

Fair, Flawless Complexion For centuries, a fair and flawless complexion has been the ultimate symbol of beauty and femininity, extolled by poets and celebrated by painters. Inspired by the pure natural whiteness of Reine des Prés, L’Occitane developed the Reine Blanche illuminating programme specifically to enhance the luminous beauty of Asian women’s delicate skin. It helps refine skin texture and encourage renewal, revealing a complexion that looks brighter, fairer, more even and more translucent. Presented in apothecary-style jars with a lustrous finish, five expert formulas, supremely effective and sublimely gentle, make up this unique and luxurious ritual for every day.

Say “Yes” with Cartier Choosing your ring, telling yourself “yes” with Cartier. Text by Melani Semuel | Photos courtesy of Cartier Besides the dress, the ring is the most essential item in a wedding, and also the most difficult to choose. Selecting a wedding ring is a romantic struggle between the bride and groom. Considering that most wedding rings are sold in sets of two, the bride and groom must put their heads together to come up with the perfect rings for the two of them.

“Big girls need big diamonds.” -Elizabeth Taylor

056

Here are several tips to help you find the perfect wedding ring:

8. Choose a diamond ring with a story behind it, hopefully one that symbolizes the love of the couple.

1. Start looking for your rings at least six months before the wedding.

9. A colourless and clean diamond is the best investment. It is recommended that you choose a D, E or F colour with VVS clarity.

2. Give yourself at least 45 working days to adjust the ring size. 3. Get as many references as possible and try on as many rings as you can. Some wedding rings may look nice in pictures but not so nice on your finger. 4. When choosing the shape of your wedding ring, always choose a circle because it is the most comfortable for daily use. Moreover, the circle symbolizes an eternal love that never ends. 5. A classic and minimalist design is recommended because it will stand the test of time. Since your wedding ring is essentially going to be worn forever, choose a timeless design. 6. Avoid complicated diamond settings. Choose a planted diamond setting because it will prevent you from losing the diamonds, and it is much more comfortable for men, who are not used to wearing jewellery. 7. Let the groom choose the ring first, which can help men get more comfortable with the idea of jewellery. And unlike women, men don’t wear rings all that well, so finding one that looks good on the groom will be the main challenge.

When it comes to wedding rings, there is a name that you just have to say “Yes” to and that is Cartier. This is a name that affirms a genuine proposal and guaranteed love. This is what Cartier offers, creating rings made to match each person’s dreams. And Cartier’s made-tomeasure service and unsurpassed expertise allows your very own solitaire to be created in just a few weeks. A dream for two, between the jeweller and you, between him and her, between the diamond and the mounting, the ring and Cartier. A genuine workshop jewel to create yourself, choosing from fourteen exceptional mountings in platinum or yellow gold, to set with a round diamond of 0.18 to 2.99 carats. Creative combinations for capturing emotion in jewellery with stones that meet the strictest Cartier standards. Cartier solitaires are stylish jewellery pieces that compete in creativity and imagination. A large repertory of shapes and mountings, all expressed in the authentic jewellery language of Cartier. Solitaires with a talent for love that follow each person’s wishes to become a unique piece made to order in style, size, and the choice of stone and metal.

Exfoliate From about the eight-month mark to about a week before your big day, you will want to do weekly at-home body exfoliations. Concentrate on your shoulders and arms so that come the big day they are glowing and healthy! Exercise You want to look your best on your big day, and part of that is having that wedding body you’ve been dreaming of. Consider starting a regular fitness regime or getting a personal trainer when you are about eight months away from the big day. Skin Needs Come the big day you want to shine – but not from excess oil on your skin. You know your skin best, but visiting a dermatologist or knowledgeable beauty counter might help assess your skin needs. Start a proper product regimen about six months before the big day and remember that results take about a month to become noticeable. Research Around the five-month countdown mark, you will want to start gathering inspiration for hairstyles and makeup for the big day. Will you wear your hair up or down? Bold or understated makeup? These decisions will be heavily influenced by the style of your dress and theme of your wedding.

Smile It will be the happiest day of your life, so expect to smile all day long. If you are considering whitening your teeth, do so about four months ahead of the big day. Consult your dentist about what treatment is best for you. Get Lippy Many brides-to-be struggle with chapped lips. The stress of wedding planning doesn’t exactly help, and weather can often make matters worse. Unfortunately there is no overnight solution, but from about the four-month mark, you should start using lip treatments to ensure you are ready and pout perfect come wedding o’clock. Deep Conditioning Want shinning, shimmering healthy locks? You need to start weekly deepconditioning treatments for healthy hair. When you have three months to go, visit your hairdresser for professional deep conditioning. Trial Time When you are three months away from the big day it is time to book your hair and makeup trials. With your dress in mind and a headpiece on hand, test out how your hair will look and how you want your makeup. If you are doing your own hair or makeup it would be wise to start practicing. Fresh Scent Your wedding day fragrance may be a bit of a luxury, but scent is one of the most memory- evoking senses, so it important that you pick something distinctive for the big day that still suits your personality.

Brow How Your eyebrows frame your face, so it is worth getting a brow specialist to reshape or correct your brows ahead of the big day. Visit a specialist to make sure you have the right shape two months in advance and then again a week ahead of your wedding day for final tweaks and plucking. Facial With one month to go it is time to book a deep-cleansing facial. It is a great idea to combine this with your hen-do if you go away on a spa break, but you can also just do it as a pre-wedding treat. It is the perfect way to ensure your skin is wedding ready! Ready Locks If you have your hair coloured you might want to refresh the colour two weeks ahead of your wedding. A final trim around this time is also ideal, as it allows your hair to look natural come the big day. (If you are in charge of your fiancé’s grooming schedule, two or three weeks ahead of the big day is the perfect time for a hair trimming for him, too.) The Week Ahead A true indulgence of all things beauty, the week before your wedding day you will want to do a little bit of everything you’ve been doing over the past months. It is time to get that final spray tan, waxing, brow shaping, deep-conditioning hair treatment, teeth cleaning and even a mini facial if you have time. Key to relaxation is also a massage – treat yourself, you deserve it! On the Day Here comes the bride (almost)! Time for a final manicure and pedicure. The beautifying process will be worth it and you will be a beautiful bride! 061

Vietura It’s about you … How you feel, how you look. What you need, what you want. It’s about you and Vietura. Vietura can help you look your best on your wedding day.

V

ie is the French word for life. And here at Vietura Bali, nature breathes new life into your former self. Because Vietura puts the world on pause so you can meet the real you, the one that’s hidden beneath layers of stress, worries and insecurities. Just a few minutes a day and you’ll start thinking, feeling and knowing that you are the most wonderful version of yourself. Vietura understands that it isn’t always what’s on the surface that matters. It’s about finding the interconnection between aesthetic procedures, integrative medicine and lifestyle coaching. It’s taking a complete approach to your health and wellness so you can achieve a holistic balance in your life. It’s about going beyond cutting corners and quick fixes with non-invasive procedures that still present you with results that satisfy and fulfil your goals. This clinical aesthetic realm is located at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort, on the mezzanine level of the main building, and opens daily to provide a

suite of aesthetic services, from skin health and intensive routines, signature natural facelifts, weight management, to acne, cellulite, laser hair removal and skin pigmentation treatments. Vietura teams with the most renowned wellness experts to guide you through every procedure and treatment. Tried and Tested I often get complimented on my skin and always thought I was doing pretty well on that front. Then I visited Vietura and had my eyes opened. Upon arriving, I was taken to a consultation room where my skin was carefully examined using the latest high-tech machine. And the result shocked me. To my horror, I was told that my skin was dehydrated, aged much older than my real age, and that I would develop spots on my face soon due to overexposure to the sun. I listened in disbelief as the therapist explained what I needed to do to save my skin from pre-mature ageing. At first I was in denial, but fast-forward a couple of months and I started to notice spots on my cheek. That made me realise that beauty is not skin deep, and a visit

to Vietura is important to check on the condition of your skin so you can take preventative measures. So back I went to the Facial Skin Spa. Unlike other facials, this gentle facial treatment really cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates the skin. My facial included a micro exfoliation –
microdermabrasion treatment that uses an alternative to diamond tipped wands to treat skin imperfections, minor acne scars and pigmentation, and revive collagen growth –
and an oxygen infusion facial, a treatment that breathes new life into your skin with vitamins and minerals and bursts of pure oxygen to make your skin plumper, firmer and brighter. The result of the Facial Skin Spa was amazing and I could immediately see the results, with my complexion refreshed, rejuvenated and glowing. ritual, a traditional Balinese experience that leaves the skin looking youthful and radiant. Tried and Tested I tried the Royal Touch spa package, but instead of the Inner Radiance massage, I opted for their signature Ocean Flow massage. The Ocean Flow massage is one of the best massages ever. Unlike most massages that focus on one area of your body at a time, the Ocean Flow Massage focuses on your whole body, from head to toe, at once. The combination of languid, rhythmical strokes and firm acupressure akin to the movement of ocean waves will definitely blow your mind and pamper your senses. With fullhand pressure and aromatherapy it will

leave you feeling relaxed and calm. After the relaxing massage the treatment continues with a lulur exfoliation to get rid of dead skin cells and nourish your pores. It is also good to improve blood circulation. Then it is time for the body masque with natural yoghurt to moisturise the skin. The treatment ends with a relaxing petal bath to soak away the stress, the warm water melting the tension away, while the candles and aromatherapy bring about a real sense of deep relaxation. Tried and Tested The ultimate couple’s treatment and a definite must-try is the Jayaprana and Layonsari Couples Ritual. I chose it because I like the treatments, only later did I find out that this is much more than just a ritual. The Jayaprana and Layonsari Couples Ritual is based on Bali’s own epic love story. In fact, the floral designs and representations of nature throughout Heavenly Spa represent an epic Balinese love story quite like Romeo and Juliet. After reading the love story, my partner and I were eager to experience the ritual. Prior to our treatment, we enjoyed the steam room and salt sauna. My favourite was the hydropool, where I could just relax and let the water pressure massage me. The restorative power of water has been used for centuries as a healing medium. It’s a great way to relax and warm your muscles, aiding the therapeutic benefits of your treatment. After a warm shower, I headed to the

relaxation lounge where my partner and I waited for our therapists. Our 180-minutes loving ritual began with the traditional burning of Balinese incense to bless loved ones. An invigorating scrub using Balinese sea salt was followed by an elemental cleansing wrap with locally sourced seaweed, and while we were wrapped up, our therapists gave us an indulgent scalp massage. After a quick shower, we dozed off under the expert hands of the therapists as they gave us a fullbody deep-tissue oil massage. The ritual ended with a nourishing Dedari facial, said to induce the kind of rapture that overtook Jayaprana when he first laid eyes on Layonsari. Jayaprana and Layonsari’s Love Story In ancient times there was a small Balinese kingdom in Kalianget village. One day the king met a crying orphan. He adopted the boy and called him Jayaprana. Jayaprana grew into a fine man and fell in love with a beautiful flower seller in the market called Layonsari. The couple wanted to marry, which made the whole kingdom happy. But when the king met Layonsari, he also fell in love with her. Obsessed with Layonsari, the king set out to kill Jayaprana. The king’s guard tried many times but could not kill Jayaprana and had to admit to him that they were acting on the king’s orders. Jayaprana was so sad, he loved his father and his wife, but he decided to allow the guard to kill him. He took the flowers he had in his hair and gave it to his enemy with a dagger to end his life. As Jayaprana died a floral smell spread throughout the forest, the animals cried in sadness and a white tiger sprang to Jayaprana’s defence and killed the guard. Meanwhile, Layonsari was told that her husband died to honour the king and she tragically took her own life. Again, a beautiful fragrance spread out across the palace. The king could no longer rule and the two lovers were buried next to one another to rest in eternal peace. They were laid to rest facing the sea in northern Bali and it is said that if you look down onto the ocean from their burial place, the coral will change colour and shine brightly.

eauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. But women know that a healthy body combined with a relaxed mind and soul reflects true beauty. Chocoholics Delight This fusion of techniques from the Philippines restores harmony, health and wellness. After indulging in a chocolate body scrub to remove toxins and damaged cells, you will enjoy a relaxing Jacuzzi bath. Then, warm chocolate mud is applied over your entire body and wrapped in strips of banana leaf laced with pure virgin coconut oil. Complete this lavish treatment with a body massage of chocolate and coconut body butter, protecting your skin with antioxidants and leaving a lustrous healthy glow. You can find this special treatment at Beach Republic Asian Fusion Spa in Thailand. Beer Bath Therapy The beer bath is one of the premier treatments offered by Pilsen Beer Spa & Wellness Hotel in Prague, Czech

Republic. A specially designed bathtub of fine-textured wood is filled with beer from a special batch mixed with other materials and “served” at a relaxing temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. The therapist recommends that you dunk your head and face in the tub to get the maximum benefit. The vitamins and minerals contained in the beer are said to restore skin elasticity, eliminate acne and lighten the skin. If done regularly, it is said that the beer bath therapy is good for your hair. Golf Ball Massage This treatment uses heated golf balls as a massage tool. The surface of the golf ball puts a relaxing pressure on the muscles and nerves as it is rolled over your body by the therapist. The result is a more relaxed and pliable body. Feel the sensation of this therapy at the Evian Resort in France. Gold Facial Who said gold was only for jewellery? This facial treatment using 24-carat gold powder is believed to improve skin

firmness, fight free radicals and brighten the skin, leaving your face “golden”. This unique treatment can be experienced at Gold Dust Beauty Lounge in Canggu, Bali. Caviar Pedicure Caviar is famous as one of the world’s most luxurious foods. But black caviar is also known as an effective tool for pedicure treatments thanks to its high protein content. Black caviar is used for foot scrubs, masks and massages. A touch of green apples adds a pleasant aroma to the whole affair. This treatment can be experienced at the Newbury Street Spa in Boston. Ginger Salt Body Glow This invigorating treatment exfoliates the whole body with sea salt, ginger root and a mixture of rich oils to deeply moisturise the skin. This full-body exfoliation helps revitalize the body, with the combination of products helping to deeply cleanse and moisturise the skin. very girl has dreamt about her perfect wedding, the day she marries her Prince Charming. And on that special day, every girl wants to look her best. One of the most important items on any bride’s wedding “to do” list is to find the perfect makeup artist, to make her look like a fairy-tale princess on her big day. Since wedding photos last a lifetime, and the majority of those photos will show your face, this is no time to mess around. If you are lucky enough to have a trusted makeup artist that will certainly make it easier. For those who are looking for one, here are some tips on how to pick the right makeup artist for your big day. 1. Almost everything in the world of weddings is simpler with references and recommendations. Let this guide you on your search for the perfect makeup artist. Ask friends and family and check with brides you thought looked fantastic on their wedding day. Once you are

080

armed with this information, get in touch with the makeup artist and check them out for yourself. 2. Every makeup artist has her own style. Some are more natural, some are more dramatic and some are just mixed. Find out what your ideal bridal look is. Is it soft and polished? Is it smoky and dramatic? Then do your research and see if the style you want matches the style of the makeup artist. 3. Make sure to look at the artist’s portfolio. Be careful: If a lot of the photos have a plastic or fake look to the skin, that means they’ve been overly airbrushed and you can’t rely on that image to give you an accurate idea of how the makeup really looked. This is a sign that the artist is probably not that good. 4. Make sure the artist is comfortable working with your complexion and will tailor the makeup application to the expected lighting, weather and

even theme of your wedding. 5. Find an artist who not only makes you look beautiful, but makes you feel beautiful. On your wedding day you deserve to feel pampered and to look your very best. So make sure you feel comfortable and secure with the person you choose. Your chosen artist will be a calming influence on the day, ensuring you can sit back and just relax! Choose someone you click with and whose work you love. 6. Before making any decision, have a makeup trial. You’ll pretty much know as soon as you’re done if you are going to like the work of the artist or not. Also, it will give you a chance to see if the products they use work for your face or cause a bad reaction. Now we have given you some tips on how to choose the right makeup artist for your wedding. In the next few pages, we show you how Mimi Kwok, one of Indonesia’s most popular makeup artists, transforms her clients on their special day.

The Perfect Wedding Suit “The groom always smiles proudly because he’s convinced he’s accomplished something quite wonderful. The bride smiles because she’s been able to convince him of it.” Judith McNaught, A Kingdom of Dreams When it comes to the wedding, most of the talk is about the bride and what she’s going to wear. But guys also have to put some serious thought into their appearance if they don’t want need to embarrass themselves and their new wives during that walk down the aisle. S

o the wedding plans are in full swing. The bride is busy picking out decorations and trying on gowns, making sure everything is just so. In all of this the groom’s main job is to make sure he doesn’t make the bride look bad. There are a few important things grooms need to consider when putting together their wedding outfit.

The do’s and don’ts of choosing a suit for grooms: 1. Go to a good tailor and make sure your suit fits you just so. Don’t rent or borrow a suit for the big day. 2. Select a classic colour such as black, navy blue, broken white or grey. Don’t pick an unusual colour, because the groom should look like a prince in a fairy tale not a clown in a circus. 3. Pick a classic suit model that will never go out of style. If you dress according to the latest trend, chances are you will look at your wedding pictures ten years from now and wonder what you were thinking. You want the kind of suit your son could wear one day to his own wedding. 4. Be careful when deciding on accessories. The wedding ring is mandatory. You want a watch that is nice but not too fancy, a good pair of cufflinks and a pocket square for a bit of decoration. 5. Don’t overdo it with the ornaments. Unless it’s a traditional outfit with a lot of embroidery, just keep it simple. 6. Wear black leather dress shoes. Grooms, all this wedding stuff can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Remember, keep it simple and keep it classic, and you can’t go wrong.

W

hen I was in college, I dreamt I would be married by the time I was 24. Now I’m 29 and I still haven’t had a man say, like Jerry Maguire to Dorothy, that I complete him. When I get together with my girl friends, the talk often turns to our wedding dreams. One friend, a climber, wants her man to propose to her on the summit of some soaring peak. Another friend has turned 30 and her desire to get married is beginning to turn to desperation. My mom got married when she was 23. Most women of her generation married young. More women of my generation are putting off marriage as they focus on their education and careers. “When will you get married?” It’s a question we women are used to hearing once we reach a certain age and our family and friends think it is time we settled down. And it is a question that can make some women rush to find a boyfriend or, if they are already in a

094

relationship, to start dropping hints to their boyfriends that it is time to tie the knot. But is it a good idea to get married because you are tired of the questions, because you are afraid of being alone, because you are in a relationship and getting married is what people in a relationship do? I have been thinking about this a lot and I don’t want these to be the reasons I get married. I want to get married because I am in love with someone I want to spend the rest of my life with and build a family with. I want to get married because I have found someone I can’t imagine my life without. I guess it no longer really matters who proposes to who. Ladies, if you think it’s time to take the next step, just say so without sending weird signals to your man and hoping he gets the message.

If you don’t know how to start the conversation, here are some suggestions to help you ask your man to start the next chapter. • Firstly, you must assess the situation. Don’t raise the topic when he is in a bad mood or distracted by work or family matters. • Don’t issue threats or ultimatums, telling him the relationship is over if he doesn’t marry you soon. • Saying that all your friends are getting married, so it is the right time for you two to take the plunge, is not the best way to ask your man to marry you. • Make sure you and him are in a serious relationship and that marriage is something you have discussed before. • Make it happen with his parents’ support.

T

he reception is the pinnacle of any wedding celebration and it has to be perfect, down to the smallest decorating detail. Some couples prefer simple and minimalist, others ethnic or elegant. How newlyweds end up decorating depends on the venue and their personal taste. Rustic chic has become one of the most popular themes for wedding receptions. The wooden tables, unfinished wooden chairs and rustic decorations will surely capture picture-perfect moments.

Bloomz is one of the best wedding decorators in Bali and is an expert in rustic chic. Exclusively for MAXX-brides, Bloomz has created a rustic chic look at the beautiful beachside venue at The Ritz-Carlton, Bali.

Bloomz On Kerobokan Bloomz opened its doors on 18 December 2007 with a block party for friends and well-wishers. Since opening in 2007, Bloomz has provided flowers and decor for more than 350 weddings.

process often happens long-distance with many late-night phone calls and reassurances. Bloomz becomes the client’s psychologist, event specialist and dream-maker.

Known for consistently high standards, bespoke creativity and excellent execution, Bloomz is a committed partner in the creation of sensational weddings for its diverse range of clients. The process begins with the bride appraising Bloomz on the Internet or with a referral from past clients or wedding planners.

Many brides come and visit the Bloomz showroom in person to be enchanted by the eclectic mix of antiques, period furnishings, candelabras and chandeliers — juxtaposed with tables brimming with garden bouquets. Bloomz guides the bride through the workshop, which looks like a French flea market chockfull of decor props, vases and decorative objects. The team at Bloomz has great fun going through the warehouse selecting items that attract the bride’s imagination. Then they take that creative direction and add to it custom elements that give each event a unique flavour representing the personalities of the bride and groom. If you can imagine it, Bloomz can make it happen in Bali.

Images of flowers and wedding paraphernalia are then exchanged at a rapid pace between Bloomz and the client. This “getting-to-know-you” phase is key to a successful event. It’s a combination of listening to the customer’s desires, intuiting their needs and offering creative, detailed plans for the event. The review

The Centre of My Heart Your guests will spend at least a couple of hours sitting at the table during your wedding reception, so why not give them something beautiful to look at. Text by Melani Semuel | DĂŠcor and photos by Steve DĂŠcor

I

t’s no wonder we call them centrepieces. Not only are these arrangements anchors for reception tables, they also command a huge amount of attention and create a dynamic space. Modern table centrepieces have moved on from simple flower arrangements and are designed to truly reflect the style and tastes of the newly married couple. Centrepieces are a major part of the decorations for a wedding reception, with flowers being the most popular centrepieces. Centrepieces help set the mood and bring together all the decorations around one central theme. Here are some helpful tips for creating your dream wedding centrepieces: 1. Instead of using one centrepiece style for each table, place two or three designs throughout the room for a

visually dynamic space that’s still consistent. This creates a ton of texture throughout the room. 2. Static formal centrepieces are being replaced by arrangements with flow and movement. Floral centrepieces are being designed to cascade across the table and down onto the floor, and tall arrangements are constructed to allow the tallest parts to sway if there is a breeze. Asymmetric centrepieces are currently very popular. 3. Although mostly made from flowers, centrepieces can also be made from candy, fruit, candles and more. It just takes imagination. 4. Couples are looking for quirky objects to put their flowers in, such as flowers and vines twisted around a vintage musical instrument like a French horn

or white roses placed in an oversized pink tea cup. While flowers are still the primary feature of many table centrepieces, more emphasis is being placed on the container they are displayed in. 5. Bring some attention to those fabulous centrepieces with creative lighting such as pin spots. What good is a gorgeous centrepiece if your guests can’t see the beautiful details? 6. In some cases, the vessels are as equally important as the blooms that fill them. If you’re having a vintage wedding, go for antiqued décor. If you’re having a beach wedding, keep your centrepieces light and airy.

Simply Poetic A wedding invitation does not have to be thick and heavy. And a souvenir doesn’t necessarily have to be big. Finding the perfect combination will give your wedding party extra charm. “From this day forward, you shall not walk alone. My heart will be your shelter and my arms will be your home.” What kind of invitations do you need? Different couples look for different things when it comes to their wedding stationery, be it fresh designs, convenience or the quality of the paper and print. Some creative couples who know exactly what they want will look for a company they can work with to make their vision a reality. There are also couples who need a little more guidance and advice on what invitations best suit their needs and budgets. At the end of the day, approachable and flexible designers who can work closely with couples and make them feel at ease make the whole process fun and easy. Usually the first thing that couples like to discuss is their wedding theme and colours. Here are some guidelines for couples to make sure they get the best invitations for their specific needs: 1. The purpose of the invitation is to convey the important message that the couple is getting married, the date, the venue and other necessary

information such as accommodation and travel plans if the wedding is out of town. 2. The style of the invitation should take into account how to best communicate the information clearly. For instance, will every guest be invited to the wedding ceremony or to the after-party? Do couples need to make separate invitations for a “family-only” event such as a rehearsal dinner or tea ceremony? Sometimes it is easy to get carried away with the fun of designing invitations, but you have to balance that with the need to deliver your message. More people are also starting to appreciate the beauty of letterpress-style printing using thick cotton paper and clean, understated design. In the digital era, when every message is delivered via email or by mobile phone, traditional stationery is an art form. It is a culmination of different ideas and personalities poured into good quality, thick paper.

LOVE IN THE BOX

Cake by Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers

Layers of Love Wedding cakes are more than icing and chocolate: they are also filled with tradition and meaning. Wedding cakes have been present at wedding ceremonies for centuries. The wedding cake was originally known as the bride’s cake, therefore the colour white became common because the cake needed to reflect the bride. The cutting of the cake is a task full of symbolism. The cake-cutting ceremony is more than just a standard, expected part of a wedding reception. Its symbolic meaning is crucial to the newlyweds because they are not just eating together; it is the first task they are actually performing together as husband and wife. This is one tradition that most of us have witnessed many times. The couple’s action of feeding each other the first piece of cake represents their desire to care for one another.

Now and Forever

He’s mature and a man of his word. She will be a good wife and mother. Adelia Wangsa and Johan Hermawan promise to love each other now and forever. Love comes from seeing daily. Just ask Adel and Johan. They were classmates at Shanghai Jiao Tong University while studying Mandarin, and then they were so much more. After dating for two years, the couple decided to get married. On 9 January 2015, they threw an engagement party at the Bali Room of Hotel Indonesia Kempinski Jakarta for 1,200 guests. Because this was an engagement party, they wanted something a little more casual, a garden party theme with pastel colours. For Adel, there’s one thing in particular that she will always remember, the moment Johan sang “Now and Forever” by Richard Marx, her all-time favourite song. Her childhood dream was coming true. After almost a year of planning their wedding, Andri and Liv finally celebrated their big day at the Ritual Chapel in Uluwatu, Bali, on 16 February 2014. From the beginning they wanted an intimate vintage wedding party. That’s why they only invited around 40 guests to share in their sweet moment. Even the universe seemed to smile down on the happy couple, giving them gorgeous weather all day, from the ceremony to the reception. On top of that, Andri did his part too, reciting his vows with nary a mistake. The wedding dance and the first kiss, with fireworks lighting up the sky in the background, capped a day that was perfetto.

mad about you

Love Is a Verb Love is a verb. It’s something you do and something you show. The newlyweds Herman Kemp and Marlieke Janssen are proof of this. While helping Herman Kemp and Marlieke Janssen plan their wedding, we could see how deeply in love this couple was, and how much they loved their families overseas. They wanted to share their happiness and their special moment with the people they loved. They designed their own hand-written wedding invitation for their friends and families. And they planned their wedding for a time and place where everyone could enjoy the party. A couple of days before the wedding, Herman and Marlieke flew from their home in Bali to Bandung. And voilà, the magic happened. In October 2015 the big day finally arrived. The decorator CDC Corp. magically transformed Sheraton Hotel into a kingdom of love, the beautiful decorations serving as a witness as the couple said, “I Do.” Surrounded by the people they love, Herman and Marlieke shared their beautiful moment. Joy, laughter, tears, hugs and kisses coloured their special day. They had their wedding kiss under fireworks and witnessed by hundred of eyes. And all of these beautiful moments were captured by I-DO Photoworks. At the end of the day, we could say that we saw something called Love become real. It became a verb. Love has a magical way to make everything believable and beautiful. Text by Pride Organizer

Rustic Intimate A simple yet intimate affair, that was Vera and Helmy’s dream wedding. Rustic elegance was the perfect theme to celebrate their love story. After a year of preparations, Vera and Helmy tied the knot. Their love was celebrated in a sacred ceremony in front of 150 guests. Only family and close friends were invited to the wedding, because from the beginning they planned a simple and intimate ceremony, with a touch of rustic style. Asked the best thing about their wedding party, both Vera and Helmy would no doubt answer that their wedding felt like a short holiday with their loved ones. There was no rush, everything was relaxed and everyone had the opportunity to bask in the love and joy of the special day. Vera and Helmy will also tell us that the most special moment was their first dance and during dinner, when guests came to the bridal table to sit and talk with the happy couple. It was miraculous!

No Coincidence, Just Love There is no coincidence when it comes to love. Everything will happen just the way it should.

Enggar Dwi Ammy and Aristianto BS met in high school. Their parents were long-time acquaintances but they didn’t play matchmaker. No, the love between Enggar and Aristianto developed on its own over time, just the way it was written in the stars. They picked a wedding theme as bright and vibrant as their love. From pretty pink to tosca, including marvellous gold, every last detail was beautiful. In the end, the wedding party of Enggy and Aris was a dazzling success and the happy couple rode off into the sunset to begin their new life.

Sacred Moments,Batak Traditions Meta and Ronald felt blessed when family and friends showered them with well wishes and ulos, the traditional Batak cloth and a symbol of love. Meta Christy Saragih and Ronald Ricky Barus had known each other less than a year when they decided to get married. And when they decided to get married, they decided to get married right away. The couple had a month to take care of all the details involved in organizing two parties. One was the traditional Batak wedding and the other was the reception at the hotel. Meta and Ronald loved the Batak ceremony, even if they had to sit for hours while family and friends showered them with ulos, the traditional cloth of the Batak people of North Sumatra. They received about 600 pieces of ulos, feeling blessed to know that each ulos they received was a sign of love. The couple was showered with love and wishes for a blessed future and a love that would stay strong no matter what the future held. The wedding reception was built around a rustic concept, with minimalist colours and materials creating the overall look, vibe and dĂŠcor. There were plenty of splashes of green such as leaves and branches, creating a magical garden. What’s Up with Commitment, Guys? 0192

Are men really afraid of commitment? Dona McMeredith finds out what makes men turn cold when it comes to commitment.

L

et’s be honest, when it comes to relationships, women are often on their own when it comes to dealing with problems. We should get special health care benefits for all the stress. And one of the problems we often run into in relationships is commitment. Or, more precisely, the man’s fear of commitment. Having been blessed with loving friends and family who have taught me much, I have concluded that men by nature do not like boundaries. Guys just love their freedom. When I was asked to write about men and their fear of commitment, my excitement fairly burst from me. This is unquestionably a subject close to my heart. Many of my friends will agree that I am the person to turn to for advice on men and relationships. So, why exactly is it that men fear commitment? My answer to this eternal question is “insecurity.” In the name of research, I sent out a series of questions to approximately 100 of my male friends and relatives on the topic of commitment. The majority of the answers that came back pointed to a lack of confidence. I would sum up the answers as: Financial concerns, loss of freedom, religious beliefs, cultural background, parents’ consent, society’s opinion, change of habits, compatibility. These are all examples of the answers men gave about why they are reluctant to commit to a relationship. As mentioned earlier, it all reflects a lack of confidence, or in other words, “insecurity.” What insecurity am I referring to? 1. Don’t have enough money to be in a serious relationship = Insecurity about his ability to make more money. 2. No more freedom = Insecurity about potential changes.

3. Religious beliefs, cultural background, parents’ consent = Insecurity that conflicts might arise. 4. Society’s opinion = Insecurity about not being liked. And we can go on and on. The point here is that men are more vigilant about making decisions that will affect their life. When they have doubts and insecurities, they will hold off on making a decision. No matter how much we women may want them to make the decision, no matter how hard we try to convince them, men need to feel that they have somehow earned the right to make the decision. I wholeheartedly believe that in the commitment department, men need to feel like they have won the prize. In this case, the prize is YOU. Winning means that he earned it. Earning requires effort and as men are hunters by nature, they need to feel like they have accomplished something to escape the insecurities and doubts. Forcing them to commit will just make things worse. In some cases, men will just run. You have to let them develop a sense of ownership over what has been attained, which again is YOU. This will allow them to overcome whatever doubts and insecurities they might have. Of course, aside from letting your hunter hunt its prey, pulling back and giving men the space and time to get over themselves is also good for women, letting them let go of their anxiety. No woman likes to be under a cloud of uncertainty, but always fretting about where the relationship is headed will only take its toll on you emotionally. And we all know that men are attracted to women who are strong and mature, and not always on the edge of hysterics. My suggestion is to practice living in the present with a positive visualization

of yourself. What do I mean by this? Live your relationship as it is, without being troubled by what the future may hold. Enjoy his companionship without always trying to find hidden meanings in every moment. At the same time, believe that only good things will come from the relationship, even when the commitment from the man is not yet clear. Take the positive out of what is happening and it will most likely result in a positive outcome. In a nutshell, when you encounter commitment concerns, remember: 1. Let the hunter hunt, allowing him to overcome his insecurities on his own terms. 2. Enjoy his company without trying so hard to find meaning in every little thing. 3. Maintain your emotional stability by always visualizing positive outcomes from the relationship. Now, of course, the question is what can you do when you are caught in a relationship where no matter what, he just can’t commit? When all efforts are exhausted and there is no progress on the commitment front, then its time to get real and explore your options by dating other men. This may help your man realize that his insecurities are just unreasonable fears that are holding back his true feelings for you. And in the end, we all like to think that we deserve a man who is willing to put it all on the line for us, right? Someone who understands how awesome we are without us always having to remind them. Someone who wants to see us every night and will never make us wonder whether we are the one, because they know we’re IT and they know they are 101 per cent ready to COMMIT!

Set Your Brain

New Method

A Lil’ Help

Share Your Thoughts

The main organ that must be stimulated is your brain. There is a reason people say it’s all in your mind. Start to stimulate your mind by creating sexy fantasies. Related to the point above, sometimes we need some help to stimulate our desires. Watch a sexy movie or read an erotic book.

Be Sexy! Be Confident!

Sure, you can wear sexy lingerie, get a Brazilian wax or put on some shocking red lipstick. But remember, be confident in yourself and the sexiness will follow.

Treat Yourself

Do what you love! Get a massage, luxuriate in a hot bath or take a yoga class. You know exactly what to do to pamper yourself.

Zzz…

Consider taking a 30 to 60-minute nap, perhaps completely nude. Trust me, everything will be different after that.

0194

Explore your sensitive body parts. Masturbate more. Do not hesitate to add sex toys. You need new movements to get new experiences and results. Expectation sometimes leads to disappointment. To avoid misunderstanding, share your thoughts. Don’t keep your desires to yourself. Share what you want in sex, from how many times a week you want sex to the positions you want to try. This could be an uncomfortable conversation at first, but it’s one you must have for a satisfying sex life.

Visit Your Gyno

The last thing to do is make an appointment with your gynaecologist to see if there is a medical explanation for your trouble getting in the mood. Have an open and honest discussion with your gynaecologist if you truly want a solution.

Every bride glows on her wedding day; why not capture that natural beauty with a gorgeous portrait session on your big day. Embrace your femininity. Let yourself be swept away in the romance and sentiment. Choose lingerie with delicate vintage lace, corsetry detailing and subtle jewels for a refined elegance that will never be dated. The sweet underneath is about unexpected and fresh emotional connections, and raw beauty. I’m reminded of what a fun surprise this will be for the groom.

Romancing Switzerland Suspended between heaven and earth, Switzerland is blessed with natural beauty, from towering mountains to picturesque lakes. Snow-capped mountains stand out against a dazzling blue sky, creating the perfect backdrop for green foothills and picturesque mountain lakes. riting about Switzerland turned out to be one of my most challenging assignments. The sheer beauty of the country often left me at a loss for words. I struggled to find the right words to describe the beauty of the snow-capped mountains, the dazzling blue sky, green foothills and picturesque mountain lakes; views so gorgeous that no postcard could capture the true beauty. Switzerland is one of the few countries that neither pictures nor words can truly capture. When people ask me about Switzerland, my answer is: “It is so beautiful that you have to see it to believe it.” And if you ask me about the perfect honeymoon destination, my answer will be Switzerland. Though small in size relative to most European countries, Switzerland possesses exquisite natural beauty, picturesque villages, sophisticated cities, a rich cultural heritage and a stunning backdrop for your honeymoon. Beneath the veneer of its squeaky-clean streets, super-efficient transport systems,

rigorous banking principles and holierthan-thou Alpine churches lies a country that is ready to surprise at every turn. The country is blessed with natural beauty that will take your breath away, from scenic Lake Geneva to the towering Swiss Alps. There is much more to Switzerland than the chocolate, the watches, the cheese, the Alps, the bank accounts, the army knives and the precision.

Old Town, New Charm Fribourg Founded in 1157 by Duke Berthold IV of Zähringen, Fribourg is a treasure trove of Gothic architecture. The Old Town, with Switzerland’s best-preserved fortifications, is under a preservation order and there are still more than 200 Gothic-style houses to be admired. In addition there are aristocratic town houses, monuments, St. Nicholas Cathedral and numerous churches. Fribourg is known for its cultural plurality,

university and bridges over the Sarine River that link the French-speaking part of Switzerland to the German-speaking part.

Walk through Old Town

The Old Town of Fribourg is better known as Basse-Ville and offers narrow winding streets to churches, fountains, ancient bridges and medieval buildings, with more than 200 Gothic facades dating from the 15th century. There are also many cosy cafes and warm restaurants throughout the area. Old Town is easy enough to find, just look for the 76-metrehigh tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral. Other sights worth noting in Old Town are the Town Hall, the Church of NotreDame and the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

Enter St. Nicholas Cathedral and be awed by the grandeur and grace of the Gothic architecture. Be inspired by the artistry of the builders, stonecutters and craftsmen who created it over the centuries. Climb

the 365 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the cathedral tower, where you can gaze out over the Old Town and listen to the chimes of some of the cathedral’s 13 bells, amongst the oldest in Switzerland.

Lakeside Murten The next day, we went to the little medieval town of Murten, on the southeast bank of the lake of the same name. Its original appearance has been preserved, with the picturesque alleyways of the Old Town and pleasant, shady arcades. Situated on the language border between French and German, the town has a lovely lakeside promenade and offers a wide range of water sports, cultural activities and other excursions. While in Murten, you have to try one of the best desserts in the region, Nidelkuchen, a very unique cream tart. This pastry is produced exclusively at Aebersold bakery, in the heart of Murten. For three generations, this family has refined the taste, quality and simplicity of this wildly popular and delicious tart. 0209

Picture-Perfect Gruyères A picture-perfect medieval town on a small hill with a castle and three totally different museums, Gruyères offers visitors 800 years of regional history and culture. Gruyères stands in the midst of the Fribourg green pre-Alpine foothills. The castle, one of the most prestigious in Switzerland, towers majestically above the medieval town. Castle tours offer a walk through eight centuries of architecture, history and culture. The crane (in French, “grue”) – its heraldic representation – inspired the name Gruyères. Despite the importance of the House of Gruyères its beginnings remain quite mysterious. Nineteen counts are accounted for in the period between the 11th and 16th century. The last of them, Michel, had been in financial trouble almost all his life only to end in bankruptcy in 1554. His creditors,

the cantons of Fribourg and Bern, shared his earldom between them. From 1555 to 1798 the castle became residence to the bailiffs and then to the prefects sent by Fribourg. In 1849 the castle was put up for sale and sold to the Bovy and Balland families, who stayed at the castle during summers and restored it with the help of their painter friends. The castle was then bought back by the canton of Fribourg in 1938, made into a museum and opened to the public. Since 1993, a foundation ensures the conservation as well as the highlighting of the building and the collection. While you are visiting the town and its castle, you should also stop at La Maison du Gruyère cheese dairy. No visit to Switzerland would be complete without some cheese. At La Maison du Gruyère, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about cheese and see first-hand how they make their cheese and sample a few varieties.

Estavayer-le-Lac From Murten, we went to Estavayerle-Lac, settled in prehistoric times, colonised by the Romans, plundered by barbarians, coveted by barons. Thrilling traces of the civilisations that have shaped this region can be found, for example, in the reconstructed Neolithic village of Gletterens and in the nearby Roman museum. In Estavayer, you can see many signs of its rich history: Savoy Castle from the 12th century, the Gothic abbey church and the cobbled streets. You can walk along the former town walls, where you will enjoy glorious views of the town. It is from Moudon Square that you have the finest panorama over the Jura Mountains to the north of the lake. Numerous rural inns and bars serve regional specialities. There are many footpaths and cycle tracks so you can discover the rural surroundings of Estavayer. The gentle hills in the hinterland form the backdrop for an enjoyable excursion by covered wagon that will ultimately take you to Portalban, a fishing port.

0212

What to Do at Estavayer-le-Lac •

Old Town – A well-preserved Old Town with beautiful medieval buildings.

Frog Museum – Yes, you read it right, a frog museum. I was surprised when I first heard about it too, but it is a must-see, stuffed frogs arranged in satirical “human” scenes, dating from about 1850.

Lake Neuchâtel – The largest lake situated entirely within Switzerland’s borders, well provided with ferries that also carry bicycles.

Grande Cariçaie – Switzerland’s largest wetland area and a unique paradise for birdwatchers. One of Europe’s finest nature reserves, it extends all the way along the south bank of Lake Neuchâtel. This damp habitat is home to 1,000 plants and 10,000 species

of animal, about a third of all the flora to be found in Switzerland and a quarter of all species of animal known in Switzerland. Viewpoints have been set up along the paths, and there are special observation huts in the woods and on the moorland areas for watching birds. You can learn more about them in the two nature centres – BirdLife in La Sauge and Pro Natura in Champ-Pittet. •

Water-Ski Lift – One of the highlights of the water sports paradise that is Estavayer, with its yachting marina and two bathing beaches. Sailing, surfing and pedalo boating are all popular at the Nouvelle Plage (new beach). One special adventure is to try the water-ski lift: the whole family, including children who can swim, can go water-skiing.

Simply Swiss 1. The country has four official languages: Swiss German, French, Italian and Romansh. Although English is widely understood in major cities, learning to say a simple “Hi” and “Thank you” in the city’s main language will be highly appreciated. 2. There’s really no need to rent a car when traveling to Switzerland. Swiss Travel System is one of the most perfect transportation systems in the world. The system combines trains, busses, vessels and even cable cars around Switzerland, from the big cities to the countryside and even to the mountaintops. Simply buy a Swiss Pass and it will give you access to wherever you want to go in 48 cities around Switzerland. 3. Fly with Swiss Air and enjoy its chocolate for a taste of Switzerland even before you set foot in the country. Trust me, it is really good. 4. A shopping list in Switzerland should include chocolate, cheese, Swiss Army knifes and Swiss-made watches (there is one that suits every budget, from Rolex to Swatch).

JUST THE TWO OF US

The City of Art and History Saint-Maurice is located at the entrance of a pass leading to the upper part of the Rhône Valley. Washed by the Rhone River, this little town full of charm and character spreads out at the foot of a majestic cliff. Deep in the heart of the rock strange secrets lie hidden, buried over time by men and nature. This year is an extra special time to visit Saint-Maurice as the town celebrates the 1,500 jubilee of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice, which dates from the sixth century. It is situated against a cliff, between Geneva and the Simplon Pass, and is best known for its connection to the story of the martyrdom of the Theban Legion, its original practice of perpetual psalmody and a renowned collection of art and antiquities. The abbey is now the centre of the picturesque village, which was vacated in the mid-20th century and is wholly owned by the territorial diocese. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The abbey has been built and rebuilt over the centuries. Excavations on the site have revealed a baptistry dating to the fourth and fifth centuries, a series of four main Carolingian-era churches built over one another dating from the 5th to the 11th century, and crypts built between the fourth and eighth century. The current church was first built in the 17th century while the tower dates to the 11th century. The Romanesque tower

was reconstructed in 1945 to repair damage caused by a massive falling rock. The newly installed carillon is the largest built to date in Switzerland. Pilgrims and travellers have been stopping off at the Abbey of SaintMaurice d’Agaune for 15 centuries. Founded in 515 by Sigismund, king of the Burgundians, the abbey is celebrating its 1,500th anniversary in 2015. It is the oldest abbey in the West to have been in constant use. Today, its walls still shelter a community of Augustinian monks. A long series of events and innovative projects will punctuate the anniversary year in 2015 to help celebrate this big birthday with the support of UNESCO. The visitor trail is based on light and imagery, the symbols of knowledge and faith. It tells an extraordinary story: that of a miraculously preserved, living religious community that bears sole witness to a spiritual and cultural activity that is not found anywhere else in the western Christian world. The visit starts from the current basilica, which dates back to the 17th century and was restored and enlarged in the mid-20th century. After the archaeological site, the visit continues with the catacombs and then the abbey treasure. It was once the spiritual centre of the Burgundy Empire and houses one of the richest ecclesiastical treasures in Europe. Military Fort of Cindey Adventure-lovers will thrill to visit the Military Fort of Cindey. It was my first

experience visiting a military fort and I was eager to explore every nook and cranny. Fort de Cindey is a component of Fortress Saint-Maurice, which is in turn one of the three principal fortified regions of the National Redoubt of Switzerland. Fort de Cindey was built between 1941 and 1946 in the Scex cliff face immediately to the west of SaintMaurice to complement the existing Fort du Scex, built earlier in the same cliff. With Fort du Scex, it comprises a fortress complex encased in rock high above the strategic Saint-Maurice valley. The fort was deactivated in 1995 and is now open for public tours during the summer months. Fort de Cindey is arranged along a mined gallery paralleling the face of the Scex escarpment at a distance from the rock face of about 25 metres, with side galleries extending to the cliff face for observation posts and artillery positions. Lateral branches to the interior of the mountain lead to troop accommodations, the command post, ammunition magazines and utility areas. The fort was planned as a mixed artillery and infantry position that could provide supporting fire to the anti-tank barrier across the Rhône Valley at Lavey. Cindey is connected to the adjoining Fort du Scex by the natural caves of the Grotte aux Fées. Routine access to the fort for supplies was provided by an aerial cableway. Although the port has been deactivated, some of the weapons remain in place.

Four Reasons Switzerland Is a Honeymoon Haven The only thing better than the perfect wedding is the perfect honeymoon, and here are four reasons Switzerland is the perfect destination for your honeymoon. 1. Picture-Perfect Paradise comes in the form of lakeside towns and beautiful mountains, sometimes in the same place. Wherever you go in Switzerland, the view will amaze you. Honeymooning in Switzerland means a lifetime of pictureperfect memories. And your photos will look amazing on your social media feeds. 2. Sweet Taste of Love While in Switzerland, eat chocolate. I am sure you all know that some of the best chocolate in the world is made in Switzerland. It is also famous for its wine and cheese. Wine, cheese and chocolate – sounds like the perfect honeymoon. Swiss food is simply delicious. Favourite traditional dishes include Rösti (the Swiss version of hash browns) and Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (slices of tender veal smothered in a sauce made with white wine, cream, onions and mushrooms). Other popular traditional Swiss dishes include fondue and raclette (a local cheese that is grilled and then served hot over potatoes, onions and pickles). 3. Nature Lovers Nirvana Switzerland has some of the most incredible scenery in Europe, thanks to the majestic Swiss Alps. And even if you are not into skiing or hiking, nature lovers will find lots to do here, from taking a dip in a crystal-clear lake, picnicking in the mountains, trekking in the Swiss Alps to biking in the green hills. 4. All Year Round There is no bad time to visit Switzerland. You will either be dazzled by summer’s jewelled sky and emerald meadows or winter’s majestic snowcapped mountains and cosy chalets. Spring is just as beautiful with snowmelt waterfalls and wildflowers and fall has some of the most awe-inspiring changing leaves on earth.

here is only one real way to do breakfast when you’re in the Indian Ocean, and that’s seven meters below the surface of a stunning turquoise lagoon in SubSix, the underwater restaurant and event space at Per Aquum Niyama, one of the Maldives’ most contemporary hideaways. As clown and parrot fish swim by, my wife Maggie and I are treated to a champagne-laced mid-morning soiree, one of several enchanting encounters the resort plans for visiting lovers.

Per Aquum Niyama is an island that’s always reinventing itself; in fact it’s technically two islands, Chill, home to the resort’s original villas and restaurant, the Lime Spa, and SubSix, located below its own pontoon 500feet off the white sandy beach, and the recently opened Play, an island that adds new restaurants, activities and accommodation options ideally suited for families and the active. For couples looking for romance but who don’t want to while their days away by the pool, it’s ideal.

Once upon a time, a visit to the Maldives was all about enjoying the destination’s captivating beauty and doing as little as possible in the process. While there are still plenty of guests who arrive at Per Aquum Niyama, a 45-minute seaplane ride from the international airport at Male, with that intention, making the most of their beachfront or overwater villas, the spa, or the serene little corners of the island that are ideal for curling up with a good book, an increasing number want to balance out all that relaxation with activities that excite, inspire and even educate.

The day before we had checked in to our Beach Pavilion with Pool as the sun hung low, signalling the end of another day in paradise. Our room is spacious and modern without being flashy; there’s a separate master bedroom, an elegant garden at the back complete with outdoor shower, a spacious bathroom with deep soak tub, and a cavernous lounge that looks out across the sea. The pink sky was captured in a reflection that ran the length of our private plunge pool, the mirror-like waters of the lagoon only metres away across a pristine, deserted beach. There was time for a dip and a chilled glass of champagne before we made our way, guided by our Thakuru

butler Milo, to the Tribal restaurant and a chance to learn African Latino cooking techniques. Chef Ken Gundu, named best chef in the Maldives twice, is from Botswana but spent many years in Belize, and Tribal, one of the innovative restaurants at the resort, allows him to blend the influences of Africa and Central and Southern America. During the cooking class we learn the different spices and herbs used in Tribal’s dishes, many plucked straight from the resort’s organic gardens, and then attempt to recreate the likes of shrimp salbute tortillas and fluffy escabeche fish under Ken’s watchful eye. During the dinner which follows we’re served by a towering Maasai warrior, a final touch complemented by African music and phenomenal food that whisks guests far from the usual resort buffet. After breakfast at SubSix, which not only features the underworld venue below but also a chic restaurant and cocktail lounge above called Edge, we cruise back to the main resort pier to don flippers and masks before heading out, this time above the water, to Niyama’s own private picnic island, for spot of guided

Huafen Fushi snorkeling and a romantic picnic lunch on a deserted shaded beach. We race across the mirror-still lagoon and watch as couples and families start their day under the sun, taking a dip in the lagoon or breakfast at BLU, the resort’s new Mediterranean-themed all-day dining restaurant that’s wreathed around one of the most beautiful infinity pools in the Maldives. Under the Indian Ocean sun the colours of the island – red and yellow umbrellas, brilliant white sand, lush green canopies and impossibly blue water, and the yellow of an arriving seaplane – are intensified as they can only be at the heart of the Indian Ocean. It makes every return to the Maldives like a first encounter. The perfect counter balance to a day spent on the beach is a treatment at the resort’s LIME Spa, which was hosting a photo shoot for famed South African model Jessica Buchanan when we visited. The key here is wellness heritage and innovation in equal measure; you can try a host of signature treatments using island coconut oil or Maldivian sand, align your chakras in SubLIME, a serene garden with sauna and steam rooms and pools; or fight off the jetlag with one of

the After Dark rituals that promise to send you directly to a tropically inspired Cloud Nine. That evening we head to the trees and Per Aquum Niyama’s newest creation, Nest. This unique restaurant features a menu packed with Asian flavors; there’s a teppanyaki hot plate downstairs but for a true experience, ascend the stairs to the canopy walkways which link the separate dining areas of the multi-level treehouse. Each private pod is suspended six meters above the lush island jungle and offers an enchanting and utterly romantic escape amongst the treetops. It’s a quick seaplane flight and speed boat transfer to one of the Maldives’ most revered hideaways, the tiny, unassuming and utterly indulgent Naladhu, a tropical oasis by Anantara. The beauty of Naladhu is that not only does its spacious and beautifully-appointed beach and ocean ‘houses’ offer unparalleled privacy (enough even for the late Saudi King as well as a raft of millionaires and celebrities who regularly visit), but you also have all the facilities and restaurants of Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli just across the lagoon.

We’re welcomed to the pint-sized island with the ringing of a traditional gong as Zahid, our shy but charming butler, leads us down manicured paths and through lush gardens to our beachfront abode. This isn’t my first visit to Naladhu and it’s reassuring to see little as changed; our Beach House with Pool, one of just 20 retreats at Naladhu, is perfect for sun lovers and beach bunnies. With the décor of a sophisticated summer home, complete with elegant hardwood touches, exotic art, walk-in wardrobe, a full wet bar with private wine cellar, and cutting-edge technology, the bungalowstyle suite is ideal for couples looking to retired from the world beyond. French doors open onto a shaded sala with swing seat, a private 35squaremetre plunge pool and a path that leads to a 30-meter stretch of idyllic sand. The bathroom is semi-open, with a deep soak tub, and outdoor wall shower. That night we dine under the stars at The Living Room, Naladhu’s sole restaurant, which has the ambience of a tropical private members retreat, complete with its own glass-lined wine cellar. Long lingering breakfasts at The Living Room are a highlight of any Naladhu escape.

Niyama But it’s not all somnolent living. The next morning, we meet with the team at TropicSurf at their centre at Anantara Veli. After a quick briefing we’re hitting the sun-kissed beach, practicing our ‘chicken wings’, our ‘lizard legs’ and finally our ‘pop’; within ten minutes we’re riding surfboards on the tranquil waters of the lagoon. Maggie proves a natural, and with a push from our South African instructor rides all the way into the beach. Even if I’m no Kelly Slater the experience is exhilarating and TropicSurf offer everything from beginner classes right through to seaplane surf safaris on remote breaks. After all that exertion we spend the afternoon in the cool of the Ocean Retreat, Naladhu’s intimate wellness retreat and certainly the most exclusive spa in the Maldives. With just one treatment room – a sumptuous Ocean House with Pool converted into a soleuse spa – the Ocean Retreat offers a range of half-day spa rituals, single treatments that include soaks, scrubs, massages and wraps, and even spa cuisine. Take a dip in the private pool, serenaded by the thundering surf that hammers against the sea walls (making the ocean-facing villas the most private of all) as the therapists prepare, and then surrender to signature treatments like the Elemis Deep Tissue Massage or the Ocean Signature Massage, which uses a blend of oils to stimulate circulation and promote deep relaxation. That evening, positively floating through the coconut palms that wreath the tiny resort, we are led to the end of a pontoon where Zahid has prepared a candlelit dinner for two. Surrounded by the tranquility of the lagoon, we watch stars emerge from the indigo skies and dine on locally caught lobster as if we were the last people left in the world. If you’re looking for a destination dining concept that’s bound to set hearts a flame, this is it.

0222

Our final stop on our romantic Maldivian escape needs little introduction. Awardwinning Per Aquum Huvafen Fushi, also in the North Malé atoll, is legendary among the luxury resorts of the Maldives. If Niyama is the modern face of the Indian Ocean and Naladhu is the best of tropical escapism, then Huvafen Fushi is the Grande Dame, a resort that regularly welcomes power brokers, captains of industry, international celebrities and travellers with a taste for the finer things in life. Home to just 43 private bungalows and pavilions, as well as the world’s first underwater spa, Huvafen Fushi has welcomed everyone from George Clooney and Kate Moss to Stefano Gabbana and John Galliano. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes had their honeymoon here, and for good reason; the resort offers intimate, personalized luxury without the hype of city hotels. Chinay, our shy but ever-smiling butler, has been at Huvafen Fushi for seven years and explains the resort’s amenities as he serves champagne during a sunset cruise on one of Huvafen Fushi’s traditional Dhoni yachts. It’s a magically romantic experience as we circumnavigate the island, the sky above turning a fiery peach hue before the inky darkness of night consumes it. That night, under a canopy of stars that reaches to the horizon, we sip cocktails at Raw, a super-sexy lounge with al fresco seating, before dining at Salt, an innovative seafood restaurant with tables perched above the lagoon, open kitchens and an enviable caviar selection. The next day it’s hard to draw ourselves from the luxury of our Ocean Bungalow with Pool, one of 12. Thoughtfully appointed, spacious and supremely private, the overwater villa faces the infinity of the Indian Ocean rather than the lagoon, ensuring no unwanted visitors as you might find at more crowed resorts. The main bedroom is cathedral-like, with soaring ceilings and polished wood

floors, while the bathroom features a Jacuzzi bath that could fit a cricket team. Outside, on a three-tiered private deck, is an infinity plunge pool and a duo of sun loungers. We eventually emerge, if only to replace solitude with solitude, firstly with a spot of luxurious pampering at the Lime Spa’s breathtaking underwater treatment room, which is wreathed by a vibrant house reef packed with inquisitive tropical fish, followed by a private champagne picnic on a secluded sandbank. Chinay and his team ferry us to our private white sand retreat by Dhoni and leave us in the shade of an umbrella with a sumptuous lunch in the most indulgent and romantic of Maldivian escapades. That night, our last in the Maldives, we celebrate in subterranean style, first with a private wine-paired dinner at Vinum, the resort’s unique underground wine cellar, home to 6,000 bottles and a dedicated sommelier, and then with a return visit to Lime Spa’s underwater spa suite for a private exploration of the resort’s reef systems with the knowledgeable resident marine biologist. Donning goggles so that we can capture the fluorescent brilliance of the coral under UV lights is a mesmerizing experience and just one of a beautifully curated collection that lovers can look forward to at three of the Maldives’ most iconic and innovative retreats.

Wonderful sleep

I am immediately greeted upon my arrival at Alila Seminyak by the genuine smiles of the helpful staff. The lobby is spacious, with a high ceiling and views towards the gorgeous beach of Seminyak. The green wall behind the reception desk catches my attention. This floor-to-ceiling green wall is covered with vertically growing plants, bringing a distinctive touch of cool calmness to the area. The check-in process completed in no time, I am escorted to my room. I am in a spacious Deluxe Ocean Suite, a sprawling space with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and outdoor balcony. The living room is equipped with a very large sofa, a small cabinet with refrigerator and mini-bar and flatscreen TVs. There is a comfortable kingsize bed in the middle of the bedroom, adjacent to the living room, and a floorto-ceiling window facing the balcony and the sparkling Indian Ocean beyond. Separating the bedroom and bathroom is a wooden room divider ornamented

0230

with contemporary straight lines for a modern look that is typical Alila. When the room divider is closed it can be used as a full-body mirror. The spacious bathroom has his/her closets, his/ her washbasin, bathtub, rain shower and toilet. All of the amenities are of course Alila Signature, with natural ingredients and relaxing scents. The suite has a modern and minimalist feeling, with some distinctive touches of Bali, including the Balinese painting hanging gorgeously in the living room and Balinese snacks. Of course, the most important Balinese element in the suite is the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Indian Ocean. It is a priceless view, especially when the sun sets, lounging on the balcony and watching as the sun slowly disappears into the sea. There are eight room types at Alila Seminyak – Superior Room, Deluxe Room, Deluxe Garden Suite, Deluxe Ocean Suite, Alila Ocean Suite, Club Suite, Beach Suite and the sensational 811-square-metre Penthouse Alila.

Everything is perfectly designed and equipped with complete facilities and world-class amenities, so you can spend your holiday with ease of mind here.

Dine for two

The resort’s all-day dining restaurant is located between the bar and the main pool, and has indoor and outdoor seating. The casual atmosphere and ambience invites guests to sit back and enjoy the mouth-watering food or simply enjoy a drink on the sun loungers. Breakfast is served here with a full selection ranging from fresh-made breads and pastries to traditional Western and Asian dishes and local selections. Lunch and dinner menus are served in the open-style kitchen featuring an Asian noodle bar and a grill and rotisserie, offering adventures into authentic and favourite flavours. Another perfect spot to enjoy the sunset besides my balcony is the Beach Bar, a chill-out space perfect for relaxing on a daybed and listening to the beach music while sipping a signature

cocktail. The Coffee Bar serves up your preferred brews or something more interesting such as the Espresso Martini, complemented by breath-taking ocean views from the bar. If you are not in the mood to get out of bed, there is always 24-hour room service with a selection of comfort classics including burgers, steamed buns, noodles, pizzas and pastas, made from the freshest ingredients. Or try the Destination Dining to impress your loved ones, in which the hotel creates a destination dining experience individually for you, from an intimate candlelit affair in your room, a gourmet spread on the sand under the stars, or a champagne picnic amid Seminyak’s scenic locales or at any of the fabulous locations within the resort. Anything is possible.

Remarkable Experiences

There are many activities available at this wonderful property, ranging from a dip in the infinity pool with its superb views towards the sea, a romantic dinner

to shopping in the boutiques around the resort. I decided to experience the onehour Alila signature massage at the Spa.

in the area and chill out with signature cocktails and dine as you desire as the sun sets over the ocean.

There are plenty of activities to choose from at Alila, but it would be difficult to top the one-hour signature massage at the Spa. The skilful hands of the therapist hit all the right spots on my body, unknotting my muscles and soothing body and soul. Alila’s therapists are trained in anatomy and massage, and offer a warm, genuine touch that flows from the heart through the hands, to stimulate, rejuvenate, balance and relax mind and body.

Or you can uncover Bali’s secrets to love and romance. Explore an ancient temple and learn about medicines that have been used for centuries to enhance the loving feeling. Stone Ngaus Temple is a historical temple in Bali that is related to the birth of Cemagi village and is regarded as a temple of prosperity and fertility. Then learn Djamoe, the ancient art of herbal healing and rejuvenation that is said to have an aphrodisiac effect. After trying your hand at making Djamoe, savour an exotic and amorous feast in an ancient four-poster bed set up on the lawn overlooking the ocean. It is really a lifetime experience for two.

Guests can also try Alila Experiences, including the Rom-Antique Roadshow, which takes you on a journey to the Bali’s west coast and its collection of beaches and beach clubs, with a touch of culture and history, all in a fully restored vintage 1980 Volkswagen Kombi. Cruise through rice fields, visit a 17th century fertility temple built on a rock in the ocean, explore the great beach venues

Romantic Bali Getaway A pathway dressed in vines, beautiful sculptured stone walls and traditional Balinese water features that shout romance, plus the smiles from everyone you meet at the Royal Beach Seminyak. Could you ask for a better tropical escape? Text by Angelique Wybier | Photos courtesy of The Royal Beach Seminyak

W

e arrived at the lobby of the Royal Beach Seminyak, Bali and were overwhelmed by the sensations of privacy, tranquillity and comfort. It was a relief to leave behind the commotion of Seminyak, one of Bali’s most popular tourist areas. It is rare these days to find this kind of calming, spacious oasis in the heart of Seminyak. I was amazed by the beauty of the 4.5 hectares of lush Balinese-style gardens and the breathtaking stretch of powdery soft beach. Being an admirer of classic architecture, I appreciated the Art Deco styling of the building and ballroom area, especially the way it blended perfectly with traditional Balinese features at every turn. For a moment I experienced that surge I felt visiting Bali 20 years ago, when I was a child and enchanted by Balinese architecture and art. I was glad to be able to share this childhood Bali experience with my husband on our little getaway.

The architectural features of the Royal Beach Seminyak are not the only aspects that exude Balinese influence; the main restaurant also radiates the best elements of the island through its wooden pillars and thatched roof, not to mention the amazing view of the main pool, lush garden and the beach. As we looked over the lunch menu, we were pleased to find so many authentic Balinese and Indonesian dishes on offer, including Rijsttafel, the famous array of Indonesian dishes that originated in the 19th century as a dining service for royal families. Knowing that this is a rare find in Bali these days, my husband and I agreed to give it a try and booked it for a romantic dinner together. We were staying in a spacious onebedroom villa with private outdoor pool (a real pool where you can actually swim, not just plunge), a beautiful small

garden and a Balinese gazebo with direct access to the beach. The villa radiated the island’s cultural heritage in every sense; it was exactly the kind of villa we were hoping for, charming with plenty of privacy. I eagerly inspected the villa including the fancy coffee machine, which is very important for my morning humour. The only suitable activity after the trip from Jakarta and the traffic was a spa treatment in the privacy of our villa. Accompanied by a gentle breeze and the sound of the waves, we had the most relaxing 90-minute couple’s massage in our villa’s gazebo. I remember thinking during the massage, “No wonder Balinese palm massage is one of the most sought-after massages in the world. When the masseuse knows what she is doing, it is really good.” Feeling very relaxed after the massage, we took a sunset stroll on the beach, which was alive with activity in a classic holiday scene, as children played in the sand and surf, people walked their dogs and a few people trotted by on horses. Accompanied by the waves, the scent of the sea and the sky alight with colours, we walked for over an hour without even realizing it, hand in hand, just absorbing the moment. Finally we were ready for our dinner experience at The Husk, the main restaurant of Royal Beach Seminyak. The restaurant takes a romantic turn in the evening, with dim lighting and live piano tunes. It is the perfect setting for an evening date. We started with a light appetizer of fruit skewers with tamarind and palm sugar sauce and then a very tasty spicy clear soup. Soon after, a parade of nine elegantly Balinese women in traditional outfits entered the restaurant, each

carrying a plate. It was quite the spectacle and I noticed that people at other tables turned their heads to admire the procession. The women then took turns serving us. This truly was service fit for royalty. As we are both food lovers, we were eager to see if the food matched the impressive service. To our pleasant surprise, all nine dishes were perfectly spiced and delicious, especially the steamed fish in banana leaf (pepes ikan) and the minced satay (sate lilit). Unfortunately, by the time dessert arrived there was no room in our bellies for the selection of Balinese sweets. After the sumptuous dinner, we decided to walk around the resort before heading back to our villa. During our walk, we stumbled onto a charming swimming pool, hidden by trees for guests who prefer a more private experience. Then we found a large boutique area just below the lobby with several shops, a gym and a Ping-Pong table. On the second floor just above the lobby, we found the spacious bar and lounge area with a cosy PlayStation corner with giant pillows as the seating area. The resort has much to offer and I was excited to spend the next few days of our romantic getaway here. Not only is the Royal Beach Seminyak perfectly located, but the resort conveys local heritage and a sense of serenity. I knew that we had discovered the perfect destination for a true Balinese holiday experience. The Royal Beach Seminyak, Bali Jl. Cradle of Love We all need the occasional spark to reignite the passion in our relationship, and what better way to fan the flames of love than a romantic escape to Yogyakarta. So book your romantic getaway to Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa and take off on an unforgettable journey of love. Text by Melani Semuel Photos courtesy of Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa

I

f I had to choose just one city in Indonesia for a romantic getaway, it would be Yogyakarta. More than just a cultural heritage centre, Yogyakarta also offers great natural beauty. Green rice fields cover much of the city outskirts and the mighty Mount Merapi looms over everything. This active volcano is one of the poles of a mystical straight line that connects the mountain, the Keraton (royal palace) and the Southern Sea, symbolising the power of ancient Javanese tradition. For those in search of spiritual enlightenment, Yogyakarta’s natural shrines must be visited. Mount Merapi is a popular destination and one you should visit when you are in Yogyakarta; people hike up the mountain to meditate, camp or just experience rustic Javanese life. Often called the “City of Art and Culture,” Yogyakarta is home to a stunning wealth of cultural and artistic treasures. There are magnificent temples, the ruins of palaces and monasteries, cultural events, art galleries, traditional performing arts and so much more. This is all part of the living culture of Yogyakarta and colours the daily lives of its residents. Because of its cultural richness and rich heritage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture. I fell in love

0236

with the city the first time I set foot in it, and couldn’t think of a better destination when it came time to plan a romantic escapade. For our romantic escapade, we book our stay at Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa. Set amidst beautiful tropical gardens with Mount Merapi as a natural backdrop, Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa is the ideal destination for both business and leisure travellers. Close to numerous cultural attractions, including the world-famous Borobudur Temple and the Sultan’s Palace, the resort is a world away from real life and so close to wonderful places just waiting to be discovered. The resort boasts 246 spacious, modern, Javanese-style guest rooms. The rooms offer views of the tropical gardens or Mount Merapi, while the 16 Lagoon Access Rooms on the first floor provide privacy, tranquillity and balconies with direct access to a semi-private lagoon swimming pool. After checking in, we are escorted to our Lagoon Access Suite, which is spacious, designed in contemporary style and furnished with the latest conveniences. Because we are staying in a suite, we are entitled to exclusive benefits and special access to the Sheraton Club Lounge.

We wake up early the next morning as we have plenty of activities planned. We start the day by watching the sunrise at Borobudur Temple, a magnificent sight that is worth tearing ourselves away from the Sheraton’s gloriously comfortable beds. It is still dark when we arrive at Borobudur and begin the steep climb to the top of the temple. Breathless, we wait for the sun to begin its journey, breaking free of the horizon to climb across the morning sky in a breathtaking display of golds and yellows. After oohing and aahing over the sunrise, we retreat back to the hotel for some breakfast and to fuel up for our exploration of Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture, and Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa offers an array of interesting activities for you and your loved ones, from Kaliurang ala Madam and the Meneer Tour to Wish Upon a Tree at Alun-Alun Kidul, where you walk through a grove of sacred trees with your eyes closed while wishing your dreams will come true. It is believed that if you can make it through the trees without running into them, your wishes will indeed be answered.

Feeling tired from all the activities, we head back to the resort ready for some pampering. Staying at Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa, a visit to the well-known Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa is a must. The spa is very popular in Yogyakarta and my advice is to book early for your treatment. The royal treatments at Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa provide complete relaxation amidst classic Javanese architecture and décor. Featuring a variety of traditional herbs and spices, the unique treatments were once the privilege of a select few in the Royal Palace. You can also keep on top of your fitness regime at the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, specially designed to resemble the Taman Sari Water Castle ruins.

selection of traditional dishes, complete with notes about which member of the royal family likes which dishes.

The next day, we take a trip to the mystical Mount Merapi then visit the famous Malioboro Street, where we have fun exploring the different offerings while being greeted with friendly smiles wherever we turn. From the famous gudeg to the sweet treat of bakpia, there are so many traditional foods to savour that you can be certain you will never go hungry in Yogyakarta. To experience some of the favourite dishes of the royal family, head to Bale Raos. Located near the Keraton, the restaurant offers a

And, of course, Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa itself is home to a seemingly never-ending range of culinary delights that will suit even the most discerning taste buds. Androwino Bistro offers a fusion of authentic Javanese cuisine and contemporary flavours, set amidst modern décor, natural light and rural views for the perfect setting to enjoy delicious meals and special moments. On the top floor of the resort, Suko Wine Lounge is a unique venue to complete your day with a glass

We also dropped in at Jejamuran restaurant, a vegetarian establishment where all the dishes are based on different types of jamur (mushrooms). I cannot believe all these dishes are made with mushrooms, they are so delicious and filling, and taste like they use real meat. It is definitely a unique experience and something you don’t want to miss when you are in Yogyakarta. We also visit House of Raminten, and as soon as we enter I know this is no ordinary restaurant. But you will just have to visit the restaurant yourself to experience its unique flair.

Enjoy a romantic dinner on a private pendopo pavilion in Sheraton’s tropical gardens, where you’ll receive special treatment as the chef prepares a romantic dinner cooked to your order and made for love. Time certainly flies when you are having fun and our romantic escape to Yogyakarta comes to an end. We loved the city and our stay at Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort and Spa. There is so much to do and experience in Yogyakarta, but best of all is spending precious time with your loved one. We are definitely coming back.

mix of five-star flair and a wide range of Indonesian dishes. With its cliff-top location, Bejana features indoor and outdoor seating on three levels. The upper level houses the Culinary Cave, featuring an open kitchen with three state-of-the-art cooking stations for cooking classes and demonstrations. Go down a level and couples will find a romantic spot complemented by a small garden and bar. For those who enjoy a laid-back atmosphere, head to the last level where an open-air wooden deck with a cosy lounge awaits. Relish Bejana’s mouth-watering dishes from different regions of Bali and Indonesia, such as Soto Pesmol, a spiced coconut and seafood soup originally from Jakarta, and Bebek Betutu, a Balinese roast duck in banana leaf. Bejana’s talented mixologists have recrafted some of Indonesia’s traditional beverages into delicious libations.

Bajigur, the aromatic warm beverage from West Java, is made up of creamy coconut milk, sweet brown sugar, ginger with hints of pandan leaf and lemongrass, with a twist of Myers’s Rum and Malibu. The Culinary Cave led by Chef Made Suriana offers a unique adventure for lovebirds. It begins in the morning with a visit to the nearby traditional markets, where couples will join Chef Made as he picks out the freshest local ingredients. With your ingredients in hand, return to the resort to experiment with the herbs and spices from the chef’s garden before heading to Bejana to learn how to prepare traditional meals. The Culinary Cave concludes with a sumptuous lunch, allowing you and your significant other to sample the dishes you have created. Impeccably designed for the celebration of love, The Ritz-Carlton, Bali’s stunning oceanfront wedding chapel is an ideal venue for beautiful island weddings. From bridal showers and spa pampering to island excursions for wedding guests, The Ritz-Carlton provides comprehensive wedding services, dedicated planners and stunning venues guaranteed to meet your heart’s desires.

Is it wonderful that I should stand as in a dream, and disbelieve—not you—but my own fate?

he Bali branch of the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs (APPMI Bali) was back to host Bali Fashion Tendance 2015, with the theme “Runway to the World.” The event was held at TS Suites Leisure in Seminyak on 9-11 October. It was held to promote the fashion industry in Indonesia, especially outside Jakarta. The three-day event included fashion shows, workshops, modelling competitions and a photo contest.

rose to the challenge of carving out a place for themselves in the Indonesian fashion industry.

Bali Fashion Tendance 2015 included more than 40 designers and 100 models. The designers came from Bali, Jakarta, Medan, Makassar and Surabaya, among others. Among them were Putu Aliki, Tude Togog, Bintang Mira, Ali Charisma, Dwi Iskandar, Oka Diputra, Monika Weber and Neli Gunawan. Also taking part were foreign designers who have lived in Bali and introduced their creations to the island, such as Espen Salberg from Norway, Dominique Tan from Japan, Brazil’s Renato Vianna, and Luca Cavazza and Milo Migliavacca from Italy.

The event is also a platform for fashion designers who want to make their mark on the industry, especially in Bali. The Island of the Gods is playing a larger and larger role in global fashion, attracting both local talent and international brands eager to build their profile on the island. “Bali is already a centre of excellence. There are so many fashion businesses in Bali. So, our target is to make the Bali fashion world even more popular,” said Dwi Iskandar, head of the Bali Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association.

The foreign designers showed creations influenced by Indonesian culture and that made use of materials suitable for wear in the tropical country. They clearly

By holding this annual fashion event, APPMI Bali promotes local fashion and inspires the younger generation to produce more creative works without abandoning the rich culture of Indonesia. The variety of designs on display was as complex and exciting as the archipelago itself.

This year’s event was stunning and festive. It created an unprecedented buzz around town and was truly something of which the organizers and designers could be proud.

INSPIRING PERSON

The Beauty Is You “I believe there is always a dress for everyone,” says Aprida Elita Jananuraga, the Indonesian fashion designer behind the AEJ brand. For wedding gowns in particular, she believes it is essential that there is a connection between the bride and her gown. “A gown should describe the bride,” she says. Text by Ester Pandiangan | Photo courtesy of Aprida Elita

like jeans and a T-shirt, and combine that with an accessory like a necklace. When I go out to dine, I don’t have any particular rules; it depends on my mood and the kind of event. What does beauty mean to you? Every woman is beautiful, but it’s our responsibility to enhance our features and show them at their best. Who is your style icon? I love Taylor Swift. She’s just … bold! Every bride wants to look beautiful on her wedding day, but not every bride has a perfect body. Can you give us some tips and tricks for choosing the perfect wedding gown? There is no such as a “perfect body”. What’s important is that you are aware of what you have rather than what you don’t. It is easier for a woman to focus on the part of her body she likes and maximise that. And the most important thing is to be confident in what you wear.

D

0252

esigner Aprida Elita Jananuraga sat down with Maxx-brides to talk about her passion for fashion, her thoughts on women’s shapes and the quest for the perfect wedding gown.

How long have you been a designer? Fashion is a passion for me. I learned about fashion when I was a student at LaSalle College, Surabaya and then started my business in 2014.

Can you tell us a little bit about your brand? AEJ is an abridgement of my complete name, Aprida Elita Jananuraga. It’s like my signature, so people will know my creations as soon as they see them.

What inspired you to become a designer? People who adore my creations and my ideas keep me going as a designer. What’s your personal style? In my daily life, I prefer a simple style,

Lace is in now but can women of every body type wear it? Plus sizes will look bigger if they wear lace, but I guess it depends on how a designer designs the dress, so it will fit with plus-size ladies. Five fashion items that every woman must have in her closet? Basic black, white high heels, classic dress, clutch and sunglasses.
