Fred Liberatore Fred is no stranger to anyone who has done the Challenge previously – he’s helped and guided literally thousands of people to dramatically change their physiques since the Challenge began. With a lifetime of experience in both bodybuilding and as a certified personal trainer and food coach, he’s probably forgotten more than most people know about training, nutrition and successful body transformation. As those that know him will testify, he’s a man that doesn’t take shortcuts and at times can be a hard taskmaster, but always has your best interests at heart. As a former Australian Masters bodybuilding champion with over 20 years experience in bodybuilding and many years competing, Fred certainly ‘walks the walk’. Fred is as passionate now as he ever has been about the Challenge and helping people meet their fitness goals, and returns this year to lead a brand new team of Challenge coaches in both the MAX’s Muscle-Up Challenge and Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge.

John Delinac John is living proof of how the Challenge can quite literally change your life. As the winner of the inaugural MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge in 2011, John knows only too well what it takes to not only successfully complete the Challenge, but also dramatically change your physique in the process. Since the Challenge, John has devoted his life to his newfound passion for health and fitness and to helping others get the awesome results he achieved. Challenge yourself Welcome to the special ‘Challenge’ edition of MAX’S Muscle News. BY PAUL KIRKHAM, BSC

T

his issue we feature the Top 10 finishers from our 2013 MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge, with a special emphasis on our Top three placegetters, Glenn Black, the 2013 Grand Champion, Jason Kenny, our amazing second place finisher, and Romie Choueiri, who came in a fantastic third. Plus we give you all the information you’ll need if you’re interested in the 2104 Challenge. If you haven’t heard about MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge before, then read on! For many Challengers, it’s been a life changing experience and the results achieved by literally thousands of Australians is truly inspiring. The Challenge has been running for three years now, and in that short time it has grown to become one of Australia’s toughest and most effective body transformation competitions. In 2011, the Challenge had a little over 500 entrants and the Top 10 results were outstanding. In 2013 that number swelled to many, many times the 2011 figures and the standard of transformations is simply amazing, as you will see on the following pages. So what is the Challenge? It’s a 12 week program of hard training and disciplined nutrition designed to achieve dramatic change. Challengers

register online, then have 12 weeks to achieve the best transformation they can. Finishers are ranked by public voting and then judged by an expert panel to a Top 10, from which a Grand Champion is chosen. Best of all, the Challenge is FREE to enter – all we ask is that you use some MAX’S supplements to be eligible for prizes. A bigger and better Challenge Master Coach Fred Liberatore offers his take on the inspiring journey that was the 2013 MAX’S Challenge. BY FRED LIBERATORE // PHOTOGRAPHY CHARLIE SURIANO

T

he 2013 MAX’S MuscleUp Challenge officially started in July when registrations opened. But behind the scenes, the team at MAX’S were doing a lot of planning and preparation, whilst competitors also prepared for their impending 12 week journey. The 2013 Challenge was set to be the best yet, building on the success of last year’s event with more features and additional services, including a new female division. Bottom line, MAX’S wanted to improve on last year’s Challenge, to keep lifting the bar for entrants.

The Challenge officially started on July 29, 2013. As a former Australian Masters Bodybuilding Champion with over 30 years experience in bodybuilding and many years competing, my passion is all about helping people meet their goals during the Challenge, and I was ably assisted by a team of Challenge Coaches and ambassadors who had competed last year.

UPPING THE STAKES

EMBRACING THE MASTER COACH ROLE

So how did we do it, you ask? Well, for one, we got a task team together and I was fortunate enough to head it up again as the official Master Coach. Engaging a full-time Challenge co-ordinator, Samantha Shaw, really helped with organising our systems and procedures and by all accounts there was lots of interest in the 2013 Challenge, from the industry, on social 8 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

posting up content on the forum, and making sure all the team were contributing to the Challenge. I also helped promote the Challenge and attended fitness trade shows. I did an instore ‘meet and greet’ with some of the Challengers in Adelaide, and when the Challenge finished I helped look after the Top 10 men and women during the finalists weekend in Melbourne, and emceed the Gala evening. One of the highlights for me this year was the opportunity to call the ‘blog of the week’ winners, throughout the 12 weeks. I loved hearing how excited they were over the phone, and it was a chance to deliver some good news and check in and see how they were going with their training and nutrition plans, and offer some advice. One of my other tasks was to report back to the Challenge co-ordinator each week and the

directors of MAX’S. I was never short of an inspiring story or tale from our competitors.

A QUALITY CHALLENGE

There are many differences that separate this Challenge from other body transformation competitions. One example is the real time replies competitors receive via the help and support forum section of the website, another is the level of experience and expertise Challengers have at their fingertips. I also like the fact there is a mix of ambassadors who are able to provide feedback based on their own experience in previous years. These ambassadors have walked in the competitor’s shoes, so to speak, and are a great resource for all Challengers. This year, we also added some cool features to the website including mobile upload and easy downloadable links for training and nutrition programs.

MAGIC MOMENTS

Looking back on the highlights of the Challenge, one of the most inspiring things to hear is people’s stories of how they handled setbacks, and still conquered and completed the 12 weeks. Every year I look forward to calling the Top 10 and this year was no exception. When they answer the phone, most people think I’m having them on, but once they realise it’s really me, they’re gobsmacked! There are many great things about the Challenge but one of the most profound is that people use the experience as a catalyst for change – be it their job, lifestyle or fitness routine, they have chosen to be fitter, active and happier. When they started they were average and now they are extraordinary. The Gala evening was a great night, there was a magnetic energy in the room, and hearing about people’s stories and journey was a heart-warming experience. It was fantastic to catch up with Challengers from all over Australia. 10 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

LIVING YOUR TRUTH

This year’s Challenge ticked all the boxes for those thinking about entering in 2014. If you chose to do it, remember that you are unique, with your own special beauty and value to give to life. What a shame it would be if you let that beauty be hidden behind your fears. As a Master Coach I learnt a long time ago that when you worry you’re not good enough, you allow others to control you, and their domination will soon make you miserable. Or when you fool yourself into thinking you’re superior to everyone else, you deny yourself the exquisite joy of offering your own special gifts to life. It takes courage and faith, effort and initiative to be who you are. It is so worth the effort, and what better platform to enter the Challenge to conquer this. Make no mistake though, no one else can do it for you – you have what it takes to be successful at being you. We will of course help you along the way, but I believe every bit of

t was during week four of the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge when Glenn Black felt his motivation take a dive. After keeping to a strict diet and tough training regime, he was hoping to see more results. And the thought of pushing through another two months of hard work seemed like a huge hurdle. “I started wondering if all the training and dieting was worth the effort,” he says. “I guess it was a time when the results hadn’t really come through and there was still a long way to go and you start to doubt what you can achieve.” www.maxs.com.au // MMN // 19

Glenn entered the Challenge as a way of motivating himself to get physically and mentally fit. His amazing new body is an added bonus.

Avoiding alcohol, pizza and other enjoyable foods in favour of chicken, vegetables and water was proving tricky as he says, “old habits die hard”. “Social occasions such as dinners, parties, happy hours, work lunches and weekends away were tough times. “Unfortunately the Australian culture doesn’t look favourably upon water-sipping blokes when you’re on a fishing or camping trip and there were many, many times where I got sick of saying ‘no thanks’ to the offer of a beer, glass of wine or slice of pizza!” However Glenn mustered up his determination and pushed on, dropping from 101.7kg to 84.3kg over the Challenge and emerging as the overall men’s winner. Before the Challenge, Glenn was appalled that he had let himself get so unhealthy through poor eating, binge drinking and lack of exercise.

“At the start of the Challenge I had set a goal to lean up and get back to my old footy weight, and never dreamt I would go so far beyond that.”

“Finding out that I had high cholesterol and rising blood pressure also made me realise it was time to act. I really wanted to improve my health and get back to a point where I felt good both physically and mentally.” Glenn saw an advertisement for the Challenge on MAX’S Muscle TV. He was inspired by the transformations of Guillame Gerbert and Peter Venz from the 2012 Challenge and was “amazed” at what they had achieved. 22 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

“This ignited a spark regarding my old passion for fitness and weight training and I loved the idea of having the support of the forum and coaches.” His wife, a friend and his sister all encouraged him to take part, which helped him immensely when he needed extra motivation. The training program proved to be straightforward, he says, with lots of variation to prevent boredom.

The supplied training program worked really well for Glenn, enabling him to build muscle and strip fat, especially during weeks nine to 12.

“This also ensured muscle groups were worked in a variety of ways which resulted in continued improvement throughout the Challenge.” He watched the program’s videos to help with his exercise technique, making it easy for him to perform the moves properly. While week four was mentally taxing, in weeks nine to 12 it was the exercises that were the biggest challenge. “This was probably the most physically taxing part of the program but it definitely stimulated muscle growth and provided great results.” MAX’S supplements proved useful for Glenn, and he used MAX’S SuperSize for 10 weeks to gain strength, MAX’S Cell Repair to aid recovery after workouts, and MAX’S SuperShred over the last few weeks to build lean muscle and burn fat.

He says the experience was “life changing” and he wants to keep his confidence shining. “I certainly have a much more positive outlook on life now and can’t wait to start each day. The Challenge has also given me the opportunity to meet likeminded people and build new friendships which is fantastic.” The change in his eating and exercise patterns has rubbed off on his family and friends, with many taking a keen interest in his approach. “This will continue to have positive impacts for so many others and it’s great to know I played a part in getting the ball rolling.” Glenn has become the “goto” expert among his friends and colleagues who ask him for advice on diet, training and supplements. 24 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

As a finalist in the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge, Glenn felt a little apprehensive at first as he didn’t know what to expect from the final weekend experience. “My apprehension soon turned to excitement after chatting with Samantha (Heron) whose friendly nature really put me at ease,” he says. “She did a fantastic job organising flights to get us to Melbourne and nothing was ever too much trouble.” The final weekend proved to be “undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life”. “I still remember Fred’s words when he called to let me know I was in the Top 10 – ‘This is going to be the ride of your life.’ Well, he certainly hit the nail on the head!” Glenn flew to Melbourne and had the chance to meet the other finalists, who he found to be friendly and welcoming. He arrived at the hotel to find a goody bag full of MAX’S products, and realised he was in for a taste of celebrity life. A personal trainer took him through a gym session to work on his technique, which was followed by a cameraman and a photographer. “It was hard to fathom that anyone would want to take footage of me! It was a really humbling experience and the guys made you feel very relaxed.” Glenn says the photoshoot was great fun, and he even had to get make-up applied for the first time ever. “It was so well run and went like clockwork from the first shutter click to the last. I would love to do it all over again!” He enjoyed roaming Melbourne for some good coffee before his on-camera interview. “Once again it made you feel a bit like a celebrity to be sitting in front of a camera – a great experience.” The following day his wife arrived, and they prepared for the Gala dinner. “We were treated like royalty from start to finish.” Making the Top three was a big surprise, he recalls, and after a nerve-wracking 30 minutes he was announced as the men’s winner. “It was definitely a very special night and one that my wife and I will remember for the rest of our lives.”

A

family health scare prompted Jason Kenny to sign up for the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge. His brother Nathan had just been in hospital for a month due to an englarged heart that was only functioning at 20 per cent. “With this frightening incident fresh in my mind and with my own health and fitness declining – I was weighing 130kg – I realised that starting

the Challenge was essential not only for myself, but also as an example for my brother,” he says. Being an inspiration for Nathan was a priority, as was getting his training and eating habits back on track. His health was at an all-time low, and he was upset about it. “This was the perfect time, with the guidance and support that the Challenge offers, to get into the best shape of my life.”

After eating too many fast foods, he had to learn to manage his nutrition, but resisting was hard. He had to discpline himself not to go through a drive-thru whenever he wanted a snack. “The most difficult aspect of the Challenge was definitely changing my diet for the better,” says Jason. “The first three weeks I really had a constant battle, resisting the desire to head to the drive thru on the way home from a long day at work, or to grab something quick and unhealthy for lunch.” He stuck to the training program diligently, but was able to tweak it to suit his fitness levels as the Challenge went on. “The supplied program was always the backbone to my training, and I just added a few more exercises here or there or changed the rep ranges to get what I thought would benefit me the most.” He supplemented his training with MAX’S SuperShed, which helped to kick-start his fat loss. 30 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

It was second nature for me to never leave the house without my ventolin inhaler as I was constantly wheezing and randomly gasping for air.” He says he was “never a fan of cardio training”, but now he can’t get enough of it. “I couldn’t wait to get up bright and early and smash an hour of brisk walking or HIIT training. I know getting so cardio fit has been the contributing factor to eliminating my condition and it feels brilliant.”

omie Choueiri has a history of keeping in shape, and four years ago he was the fittest he had ever been. He had been training hard for six years and was proud of his achievements. But then he completely dropped off. “For the last four years I had slacked off my weights, stopped my cardio completely and my diet was pretty bad,” he says. “I was facing a few of life’s challenges, and training wasn’t important to me anymore.

I stacked on the weight and not in a good way. I had never previously tilted the scales over 81 kilograms until late last year, and in 2013 I hit 91 kilograms.” With more than 10 extra kilograms to fight off, and having lost his motivation, he knew a big overhaul was needed to get his body back on track. “I knew I needed a change, and I decided in 2013 I would train harder and try to put on some muscle, and then lean down during the summer.”

“I knew I needed a change, and decided this year I would train harder and try to put on some muscle, and then lean down during the summer.” He got back into the gym, and a fellow gym-goer called Dave told him all about the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge. “After a few attempts at trying to convince me, I finally decided to use the 12 week Challenge as motivation to get back into shape. And I haven’t looked back since.” Romie set out with the goal of reaching a weight of 75 kilograms, but found he hit that mark much faster than he first thought, so he pushed harder towards 69 kilograms. For Romie, the first two weeks and the last two weeks of the Challenge were equally the biggest hurdles. 36 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

“The first two weeks were hard because I was trying to adjust to a new diet and lifestyle, and the last two weeks were hard because I went really strict with the diet, and I felt depleted and couldn’t train the way I was used to,” he says. One of the unexpected difficulties was confusion and negativity expressed by some family and friends, who didn’t understand why he was putting himself through such a focused regime. “But I learnt to be patient, and learnt to use their negativity as motivation to keep going, and to go harder,” he says.

Like every Challenger, Romie had his moments throughout the 12 weeks but he always managed to push through and worked even harder in the gym.


Despite these battles Romie really enjoyed the training. He admits there were times during the three months when he felt “weak and tired”, but he pushed through with determination. He turned to MAX’S products to supplement his diet overhaul, and was a fan of MAX’S SuperShred protein. “I tried all the flavours – caramel nougat, chocolate and moccachino. Some were inspired to start getting into shape and are looking forward to the 2014 Challenge so they can take part in it. “It feels good trying to help others achieve their goals.” He says if anyone is considering the Challenge for 2014, they need to give it their all and remember 12 weeks is a short time. “Have a real crack, it’s only 12 weeks and if I can do it anyone can. Also, don’t let anyone put doubts in your head, and if you stumble throughout the Challenge don’t let it bring you down, just get back on track and have another go.” He recommends that everyone try the Challenge “at least once in their lifetime”. “It’s a great way to get motivated to get into shape, and there is plenty of help and support along the way.”

eeking fresh motivation and focus following some personal struggles, Ashley Purvey turned to the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge to get him back on track. Ashley says he was in the worst shape of his life and hadn’t trained for around 10 months when the Challenge began. He set out with the goal of getting as lean as possible, but he also wanted to make his two young sons proud of his achievements. “They were both awesome during the Challenge, telling me about changes they could see in me and helping me train,” he says. In the last four weeks things became a lot harder. Ashley had made so much effort with good nutrition and training, but he wasn’t seeing enough change. He didn’t give up, and soon found his “mojo” in the gym and looked forward to each training session.

raig Williams started the 12 week Challenge with a burning desire to build a muscular physique. He’d been training in the gym but couldn’t quite get the results he was after. “MAX’S offered a structure that I incorporated into my then current program,” he recalls. “When I mixed the two it gave me variety and the results followed. What I didn’t expect was to be blown away by my new physique! ollowing in his cousin Guillaume’s footsteps was not easy for Didier, who entered the Challenge whilst battling some serious personal demons. “I started the Challenge because I wanted to be a healthier and happier father to my two sons and husband to my wife. It came at the right time, I was battling depression, and had lost drive and motivation. I needed to prove to myself that I was sill able to succeed at something.” And succeed he did. Aside from Didier’s new lean and toned physique, it’s the emotional benefits that stand out the most.

It came at the right time, I was battling depression, and had lost drive and motivation.” “To leave my family for a week and spend it in Sydney with Guillaume, just focussing on myself and finishing the last stage of the Challenge strongly was difficult. My family is everything to me and not being by their side was a challenge of its own.” Like Guillaume before him, Didier’s journey has inspired a lot of people. “I have friends and family who now exercise and eat cleaner from seeing my results. Old colleagues have asked me to help with a training program and nutritional plan. And I get feedback from people I don’t even know who tell me they have been following me through the Challenge and ask me to send them information about getting involved.” As a newbie to the gym, Didier followed his training and nutrition plan to the letter, and was rewarded with results. “It definitely doesn’t come easy though, as you are continually giving another five-to-ten per cent every time 50 // MMN // www.maxs.com.au

you walk through the door. I’ve never really trained before so it was a good learning experience for me.” he says. One of the highlights for Dider was the finalist experience in Melbourne, including the Gala dinner. “Spending time with other finalists, ambassadors and MAX’S staff was amazing. We were treated so well. I felt like royalty! Being able to train at an iconic gym like Doherty’s was a huge compliment. Having our stories told and meeting everyone on the Gala night was mind-blowing.” When pressed for a final word on the Challenge, Didier has only good things to say: “To anyone thinking of entering the Challenge, there’s so much more to gain than to lose. The only thing you lose is your old self. It only gets better and there’s nothing out there that works better than the MAX’S Challenge. It is so well-planned and the support is second to none. The results speak for themselves. It’s genuine and so are the staff at MAX’S.”

t was going to be all or nothing for George Hazouri when he signed up for the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge – he was after a “permanent lifestyle change”. “I have been training on and off for the past seven to eight years, but it was never at the intensity it should have been,” he says. George noticed he was putting on weight, and thought it was “ridiculous”, so he determined to do something about it. He had the support of his girlfriend who did the Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge, and fellow Top 10 finalist Romie

Despite breaking his leg in a serious car accident just months before the Challenge, George had a certain body image in mind, and was keen to see how close he could get in just 12 weeks. “I also wanted to be the fittest I could possibly be, to get as much definition as I could, drop my body fat percentage and to make healthier choices as part of my new lifestyle change.” Getting into the habit of preparing food was a big challenge, to make sure he had nutritious options to hand.

George set himself several goals for the Challenge: to get fit, to get lean and to clean up his diet. He succeeded on all fronts.

The fact George is a part owner in a fish and chip shop didn’t help with resisting temptation! He learnt to stock up on vegetables and meats for the week, and loved MAX’S SuperShred in chocolate. “Not being able to eat out at most restaurants or go for a drink with friends was a hard thing to give up for a while, but things did change and it was the best decision I’ve made.” George focused on training one body part each day, following different programs to keep challenging himself. He enlisted a personal trainer at the gym and also did long cardio walks on the weekends. He’s “extremely happy” with his transformation. “Looking at my before and after shots…it was like looking at a different person. I had achieved that image I had imagined and reached a goal I never thought possible.”

The sacrifices George made throughout the 12 weeks were all worthwhile, especially when the final reward was a ripped new body.

ai Warwick has always had an interest in fitness, but confesses that in recent years he let himself go. He decided to challenge himself to get in shape, and to set a good example for his young son. “My main objective prior to entering the Challenge was to get as lean as possible,” he says. “I wasn’t really concerned with a specific amount of weight that I had to lose.” Jai focused on completing every weights workout, every cardio session and getting his nutrition in order. The first two weeks, and the final few days of the Challenge threatened his determination to succeed, as things got tough. “The first two weeks were a bit of a shock in regards to the nutrition. Being quite a large eater and previously having a carbohydrate dense diet, I initially struggled with the new, healthier way of eating.”

“I felt hungry, especially during the day at work, and with this came a feeling of lack of energy and fatigue. What helped me overcome this was the knowledge that it was just my body adapting and it would pass, and that the nutrition plan was complete and providing my body with the nutrients it needed, even though it didn’t feel that way,” Jai recalls. He soon adjusted and came to enjoy the eating plan and his appetite was satisfied. Jai used MAX’S SuperShred and MAX’S Nitetime Protein throughout the Challenge. He lost around 16kgs and dropped his body fat to around six per cent – beyond his “wildest expectations”.

“The most pleasing thing for me though was the mental transformation that I achieved. I have formed new habits in regards to training, nutrition and lifestyle. And I am much more motivated for life in general.” Jai’s efforts impacted his wife, who is now also eating better, and he plans to pass on what he has learned about healthy living as his son grows up. His advice for those contemplating entering the Challenge in 2014? “Don’t go in half-hearted. Promise yourself that you will do everything you can to complete the training and nutrition to the best of your ability and you will be amazed by the results.”

ohn Shilton’s advice for people contemplating the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge is to jump right in. “Do it! It will be tough sometimes, but it’s only 12 weeks and it will transform your life,” he says. Indeed, it transformed his. John considered himself fairly fit but overweight before entering the Challenge. A long distance runner, he lacked the discipline that a structured weight loss program provides, and the Challenge was just the ticket. “After watching the 2012 Challengers on MAX’S Muscle

TV, I made the decision to take it on. I’m also good mates with last year’s Top 10 Challenger Peter Venz, so his achievements inspired me to give it a go,” he explains. With his main objectives being to gain muscle and get lean, John was able to do most of his gym workouts from the convenience of home. “I loved the training program. All of the hard work of actually developing a program was done for me. It was very straightforward and I could do all of the exercises on the

And now that I have a six-pack, I want to keep it.” Since the Challenge ended, John has been working hard to maintain his new body, and in the process has been inspiring all those around him. “I wish I had a dollar for every time someone told me how good I looked and asked how I did it. couch and to start training hard and lose weight. It’s made me feel much better about myself which has improved my life in all areas.” It’s a common sentiment, that witnessing a person go through the Challenge and achieve amazing results often prompts another into action, it’s really true. For John, though, the Challenge wasn’t always a smooth ride — he just had to tough it out. “Cutting out sugar was hard at the beginning, but after a few weeks I became used to it. The hardest stage was probably weeks nine and 10 when I was away on holidays with my extended family. Everyone was relaxed, eating and drinking what they pleased, whereas I had to stick to my eating and

training plan, rather than eat takeaway food and drink beer. That was pretty tough.” John’s transformation speaks for itself. Whatever sacrifices he had to make were worth it — and part of the reward was the finalists weekend in Melbourne, an experience he says he’ll never forget. “The finalists weekend was like a dream. I had to keep pinching myself because I couldn’t believe that from thousands of people, I was in the Top 10 and was being treated like a star!” What John also won’t forget is the results that came from his hard work and steely determination. If he gets distracted, there’s always the six-pack staring back at him in the mirror as a reminder.

I

n 2012, Neil Cahill undertook the MAX’S Muscle-Up Challenge and lost 33kg, so in 2013 he wanted to take it to the next level. He had fallen short of reaching the body fat percentage he hoped to achieve, and wanted to get some “serious abs”. “This year I was flat out with my new business and my wife and five kids. Old habits were coming back, so I needed to do it again to teach myself how to incorporate training and good nutrition into my now hectic work and family schedule, before it was too late, no excuses!” he says.

In the 2012 Challenge, things were different for Neil. He had been in a downward spiral, was depressed and had quit his job in town planning to look after his wife as she recovered from complicated openheart surgery. As a result, food was comfort – but he was determined to break the cycle and be a good role model for his children. “My self esteem was nonexistent and I was disgusted to see pictures of myself weighing 135kg. After some soul searching I realised that my health and my obesity problem was the one thing that I could change.”

He heard about the Challenge on MAX’S TV, and liked the idea of weight training. “I wanted to be proud of my body and of course, swim shirtless for the first time in my life. I also needed to show my kids that you don’t give up on something even if you aren’t successful the first time.” Around week four of the Challenge, fat loss slowed down, so he had to get stricter with his eating and incorporate a third training session in each day to add cardio. He’s confident he won’t slip back to his old habits again. “This is how I’ll live now,” Neil says.

W

hat else can I say but, wow! What an experience, privilege and honour it’s been to be part of the most exciting Challenge yet! Seeing thousands of men and women change their lives for the better, and being lucky enough to mentor, coach and guide so many as this year’s Muscle-Up Training Coach has just been incredible. Huge congratulations to every competitor that completed the MAX’S and Maxine’s Challenge. You have not only changed your own lives for the better, but those too of people close to you, and even complete strangers who have watched from afar – not to mention myself. It was a fantastic effort by all, and the level of competition was incredible. As many will agree, the Top 50, Top 10, Top three, right up to the winners, were all very deserving of their accolades and have set the bar extremely high for future Challengers. It’s been a brilliant 12 weeks, an experience I’ve loved re-living with this year’s

competitors. It took me right back to my own Challenge experience in 2011 with the mix of emotions, so it was nice to help guide new Challengers through their ups, downs and uncertainties. I hope to relive it all over again with thousands more, for many years to come.

T

he 2013 MAX’S MuscleUp and Maxine’s Shape-Up Challenge are now ‘in the books’ and what a successful Challenge year it has been. It’s a humbling experience to help others who want to improve their lifestyle and ultimately their long-term health. As the Nutrition Coach, the Muscle-Up Challenge starts a lot earlier in the year and as a lot of Challenger’s know, being prepared is the key to success. Creating nutritional plans, healthy recipes, diet tips and trying to answer questions that haven’t been asked yet take my focus. Being a nutritional coach and personal trainer in my day-today job gives me the satisfaction of seeing my own personal clients work hard and achieve their goals. Add in thousands of MAX’S and Maxine’s Challengers and the emotions of being a proud coach go into over-drive. The online forum has been an amazing tool that helps Challengers with their nutrition, training and motivation. I know from personal experience that when trying to make a positive change in your lifestyle, you are often met with resistance and negative support from those

close to you. The forum provides the exact opposite. It takes on a space of enthusiasm and encouragement when you’ve had a bad day or a rough week. Everyone on the forum is on your side and that’s a nice feeling to have when you can’t have a slice of ‘Susan’s’ birthday cake at work. Everything from how to cook chicken 12 different ways to activating your almonds could be found on the forum. The forum can also be a good place to see some of the real contenders who might take out the win. When it comes to judging time, judging a bodybuilding competition is a breeze compared to judging the Top 50 men and women. When a competitor is on stage, it is easy to see who has done the hard work and who has stayed committed. Now change the setting from 10 bodybuilders on stage to thousands of Challengers who have fought off late shifts at work, their own children’s birthday parties, and the hot pie truck to make jaw-dropping transformations,

and judging becomes a whole lot harder. I honestly felt like ‘The Bachelor’ when judging the women, I wanted to give them all a rose for their hard work and well-earned results. And like always, it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for. Just because someone hasn’t made 10 posts a day on the forum doesn’t mean they won’t make the Top 10. Hard work is what will get you noticed, and we do pay attention, I can promise you that. Finally, the Gala night rolls around and I bet for many of the Top 10, the wait between finishing the Challenge, the announcement of the Top 10 and right until Gala night feels twice as long as the Challenge itself. It’s exciting as a Coach to see everyone in person and it is honestly one of the most energetic weekends to take part in. After following the Challenger’s blogs for 12 weeks and getting to know them almost in a ‘creepy online stalker kind of way’, it’s exciting to finally meet them in person. Secretly, I enjoy meeting the Challenger’s family

who have come in support. More often than not, they have also taken part in the Challenge or have been the backbone to their partner’s success. I love hearing the untold stories about boiled chicken breast tantrums and stinky gym bags and protein shake containers. These are the kind of stories that don’t make the Challenger’s blogs. It’s a great reminder that we are all the same and no-one has had an easier Challenge than someone else. In my eyes, anyone who finished the Challenge should feel like a winner. When we announce the winner on the Gala night, I don’t think you would find a disappointed soul in the place. Everyone is so proud of their own achievements and their new MAX’S friends. It’s hard not to be inspired by the Top 10. Ask anyone who has completed the 12 week Challenge and you’ll hear a common theme. It’s a tough 12 weeks both physically and mentally. But as the saying goes, ‘if it’s worth having, it’s worth working for’.
