ou’ve done everything right. Painstakingly documented your plants’ nutrient regimen and growth, ensured pests have been kept at bay, measured and remeasured EC and pH with all the latest high-tech tools, and watered as precisely as possible. Still, something is wrong. Your plants don’t look healthy. They certainly aren’t productive. Maybe they failed to sprout at all. What went wrong? Unfortunately, your beloved plants can’t articulate what ails them, so it’s up to you to retrace your steps and troubleshoot. The unknown can cause anxiety in many gardeners, especially when a season’s worth of work can go to waste. A garden can be a very relaxing place when all is healthy, but it can be a source of concern when things take a left turn and you don’t know why. In her article “Sick Plants: Getting the Diagnosis Right” on page 52, author Sally Nex provides insight on what can go wrong and how to diagnose the problem, as well as words of wisdom. “When you first discover your sick plants, diseases and pest attacks can seem like

mysterious disasters,” says Nex. “Don’t panic, though. Take time to methodically work through the symptoms and figure out exactly what’s wrong. Once you know the ailment, like any good doctor, you can prescribe the right medicine.” Of course, knowing how to prevent problems is important, and Nex provides some tips on how to reduce the risk of being your own worst enemy. The latest technology also helps. Today’s meters, software, and sensors are more advanced than ever, and with some amazing innovation on the commercial side in recent years, that technology is trickling down to home growers. For more on recent grow tech, check out Kent Gruetzmacher’s article “High-tech Tools for Growrooms” on page 34. Whatever you’re growing, there is nothing better than having a healthy crop from seed to harvest. Hopefully some of the insight in these pages can help you achieve that. PROPAGATION

Propagation in the plant world is a beautiful thing. Both a science and an

art, propagation is the delicate and, quite arguably, magical process of plant reproduction. The primary methods are sexual propagation and asexual propagation. Sexual propagation is nature’s way of reproducing a plant. It occurs when the pollen of a male plant lands on the flower of a female plant, fertilizing its ovaries and producing seeds. The seed contains the genetic characteristics of both parent plants. When the seed is planted, or sown, it develops into a new plant, or strain, that displays traits from both plants from which it was produced. Asexual propagation techniques include but are not limited to: cloning, grafting, layering, and tissue culture. Taking clones (or cuttings) from a mother plant has established itself as the most reputable form of asexual propagation amongst growers in the hydroponics industry. Check out Grubbycup’s article on page 30 for more information.

Does it matter if a humidifier is warm or cold air mist? Thanks, Hardy. Thank you for your question. Both warm-mist and cold-mist humidifiers can be used in an indoor garden to increase humidity levels. However, they operate in very different ways. Because of their differences, a grower may find that either the warm mist or cold mist is better suited for his or her indoor garden. A look at the advantages and disadvantages of each type of humidifier will help a grower decide which is best for their indoor garden. Warm-mist humidifiers are designed to create a warm mist from heated water. In fact, most warmmist humidifiers heat up the water to its boiling point, which greatly reduces the likelihood of molds and bacteria. Warm-mist humidifiers will increase the ambient air temperature within the growroom. This can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on a growroom’s current heating/cooling requirements. For most indoor gardens, additional heat is unwanted because of the excess heat given off by horticultural lighting equipment. That being said, many growers prefer to use a warm-mist humidifier during the winter months when the ambient air temperature is naturally cooler. Cool-mist humidifiers are humidifiers that disperse a cool spray/mist into the air. The mist is released at room temperature and is not actively chilled. The two types of humidifiers that fall into the cool-mist category are evaporative humidifiers and ultrasonic humidifiers. Because they do not heat or chill the water, cool-mist humidifiers

EH

20

generally require less electricity to operate than warm-mist humidifiers. The lack of heating/cooling elements also makes cool-mist humidifiers the less expensive option. Cool-mist humidifiers are available in many shapes and sizes, so there is an option for just about any size indoor garden. Coolmist humidifiers will not raise the temperature of the air in the grow space. This is advantageous for any indoor horticulturist battling excess heat. The biggest disadvantage of cold-mist humidifiers is they need to be cleaned and sterilized regularly to minimize the chance of molds or bacteria establishing within the water-holding chamber or within the humidifier’s internal components. Maintaining optimal humidity levels within a growroom can be difficult and the use of a humidifier, in many cases, is a grower’s best option. A cool-mist humidifier is probably the best option for growers who are already combatting excess heat from lighting equipment. Indoor gardens that can handle, or even require, the additional heat produced by a warm-air humidifier can humidify the air with less worry of molds or bacteria forming in the humidification unit. Regardless of which humidifier is the better fit, maintaining humidity levels conducive for accelerated growth will reward an indoor gardener come harvest time. Keep on Growing, Eric Hopper

max FACTS Space Hydroponics: Growing Vegetables for a Trip to Mars

A manned trip to Mars is the goal for space agencies, so scientists are looking at viable ways to grow food for such a long trip. Given it would take a space craft (under ideal conditions) between six and nine months to get there, plus the same return trip, astronauts will need to grow food en route. In a study published in the journal Life, Silje Wolff conducted tests to perfect growing lettuce in space. “We grew the plants and germinated them and then we transferred them to different nutrient treatments and recorded data on everything going into and coming out of the leaf,” says Wolff, who grew the lettuce in a closed hydroponic system. The challenge is hydroponic solutions in space won’t mix as they do on Earth, because density and weight don’t separate cold and warm water in the same way, so a centrifuge would be needed to create some gravity. — insidescience.org

Shortcut for Photosynthetic Glitch Boosts Crop Growth 40 Per Cent The process of photorespiration drastically reduces a crop’s yield potential. So, researchers engineered a photorespiratory shortcut that improves yield by 40 per cent more. Plants convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis, but most crops are plagued by a photosynthetic glitch. To accommodate it, they evolved the energy-expensive process of photorespiration, which decreases yields. A report in the journal Science from researchers at the University of Illinois and US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service details how the engineered shortcut helps plants photosynthesize more efficiently to boost production. “Photorespiration is anti-photosynthesis,” says lead author Paul South, a molecular biologist with the Agricultural Research Service. Researchers estimate 200 million additional people could be fed with the calories lost to photorespiration in the midwestern US alone. Research was done on tobacco: an ideal plant because it is easier to modify and test than food crops. — sciencedaily.com

How Big is the World’s Largest Mango?

The record-holding world’s heaviest mango weighed 7.57 pounds and was grown in the Philippines city of Cagayan de Oro. The Florida Keitt variety mango measured a foot long, 19.5 inches in diameter and was seven inches wide — a bit longer than an 11-inch-long NFL football. The previous largest mango was grown in Hawaii and weighed 5.29 pounds. Mangoes are easily the most popular fruit on Earth, and most are grown in India, which provides nearly 50 per cent of the global supply. Production in that country reaches more than 19.8 million tons annually. In India, more than 2.3 million acres are dedicated to mango farming. The mango tree is quite large, reaching 100 feet in height with a canopy of more than 35 feet and leaves measuring up to 16 inches long. However, mango farm trees are kept smaller to facilitate an easier harvest. — guinnessworldrecords.com

max FACTS Three of the Most Profitable Hydroponic Crops

A hydroponic grower could do well cultivating some of the most profitable hydroponic crops. While cannabis is the most profitable crop to grow, many will be interested to know ginseng is right behind marijuana. In 2018, ginseng fetched between $500-600 per pound. For centuries the root has been used for various health purposes. More recently it’s been used in energy drinks. Some will be surprised to hear bay leaves are also another profitable hydroponic crop. Last year a pound of bay leaves was worth $30 per pound. They’re used to add taste and aroma to sauces and dishes. The herb comes in several varieties including California bay leaf, Indonesian bay leaf, and Mexican bay leaf. Also making the list is tarragon, which was worth $16 a pound in 2018. Tarragon nicely complements meats like fish and chicken and is predominantly used in French cuisine. However, it also has and can be used to induce sleep, increase appetite, improve cardiovascular health, and even for pain relief. — igrow.news

How Tomato Plants Fight Bacterial Attacks

New research shows how tomato plants emit an aroma that wards off attacks from bacteria. A finding published in Frontiers in Plant Science shows tomatoes produce a compound called hexenyl butyrate (HB), which has significant potential for protecting crops from infections and drought. “The application of this compound in fields is a new natural strategy for improving crop yields. Treatments will protect crops from biotic and abiotic stress,” says Purificación Lisón, researcher at the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology. The compound closes the stomata, which is the key to protecting plants. Another advantage is that it is easy to use. As a volatile compound, it can be applied by spraying onto plants or by using diffuser devices. Researchers have proven the treatment of the tomato plants with HB causes the closing of the stomata, protecting them from infection by the Pseudomonas syringae bacteria, increasing their resistance to it. — phys.org

Greenhouse Grower Reducing Plastic Packaging

Canadian lettuce producer Inspired Greens has reduced its plastic use by packaging its products in a recyclable sleeve rather than the traditional plastic domed clamshell. Greenhouse lettuce is usually sold completely encased in plastic, but Inspired Greens is changing all that and helping the environment in the process. “Retailers across North America are thrilled with our open sleeve concept for living lettuce,” says David Karwacki, CEO of The Star Group of Companies, which built the Inspired Greens greenhouses. “The beautiful presentation brings the produce department alive, and the massive reduction in plastic has been a home run.” Inspired Greens has produced more than 15 million heads and, according to their calculations, effectively transformed two million pounds of hard plastic to less than 100,000 pounds of recyclable sleeves. “This is just one item in the produce department, but everything helps. Inspired Greens has reduced plastic by 20 times,” says Karwacki. — freshplaza.com

Can Ozone Treat Pathogens in Fresh Produce?

With the recent e-coli breakouts in romaine lettuce, growers have been trying to find ways to remove pathogens from fresh produce. Helmut Leili, a veteran agronomist who happens to be the CEO of Cardinal Fresh, suggests ozone treatments can deal with pathogens and bacteria in produce products. “Ozone is a very powerful and natural oxidizing gas that simply and quickly reverts back to natural oxygen,” Leili says. “The technology of creating ozone is well developed and used extensively in many applications, such as municipal water treatment, hospital sanitation, and medical treatments such as blood transfusion.” Millions of dollars worth of fresh fruits and vegetables are recalled weekly due to potentially deadly pathogens hiding in crevices of produce. Leili has been researching ozone application solutions almost five years and gotten to a point that allows ozone to be applied to exported fruit and vegetables in a safe and effective manner.

UK Funds Major Plant Diseases Research Program

The British government is investing $22.8 million for a major bacterial plant diseases research program, which will be conducted under the umbrella of several UK research councils. The initial aim of the program is to prepare for the possible introduction and spread of the devastating plant pathogen Xylella fastidiosa (Xylella), described by the European Commission as “one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide.” The nasty, insecttransmitted pathogen infects 500 species including crops, ornamental plants, and trees. In Italy, one million olive trees are dying from Xylella in a disease called Olive Quick Decline Syndrome. So far, Xylella has not been reported in the UK. Xylella is a bacterial pathogen transmitted by insects feeding on the xylem tissues that transport water in plants. These bugs include froghoppers in Europe. The common froghopper feeds on a variety of plants, and is commonly found across most of Northern Europe, including the UK.

nic Plant Cloning by Grubbycup

A

eroponic methods are commonly used in vegetative propagation (a.k.a. cloning) by hobbyist and professional gardeners alike. Vegetative propagation is an asexual form of plant reproduction. A section of stem that includes a growth tip is separated from a donor mother plant and induced to produce roots. This effectively allows parts of the same plant to be grown in different locations. Another way of looking at it is the cutting will become a genetic copy of an original plant, which is why they are referred to as clones. Some plants are naturally specialized in exploiting this advantage. For example, the spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a common houseplant that sends out inflorescences (flower clusters on a stem) that include little plantlets (clones) that can take root once in contact with surrounding soil, eventually becoming independent plants.

Meristem Cells are Key for Cloning

Roots can be induced to form along stems due to a plant’s meristem cells. Meristem cells start as undifferentiated cells that can further develop into a variety of specialized cells depending on local need. This is important to note as all meristem cells start out the same no matter where they are located in the plant; a fact which is exploited in rooting cuttings. Growth tips and root tips contain such high concentrations of these cells that they are both called apical meristems. Secondary meristem cells are also found along the stem, trunk, and branches, where they generally develop to increase girth. Under proper conditions these secondary meristem cells can be induced to instead mature into root cells, forming new root tips. Fortunately for many plants this can be as simple as keeping the end of the stem opposite the growth tip moist in room temperature conditions and under moderate lighting. There are many ways to go about rooting cuttings. Some of the simpler methods include placing cuttings directly into a moist growing medium or in a glass of water set on a windowsill.

Aeroponics Made Easy

As an improvement to the basic glass-of-water method, an air stone can be connected to an air pump and added to the water. This adds air to the water, helping it stay oxygenated and preventing it from going stale. While any portion submerged would be better described as a deep water culture (DWC), the above water stem that is exposed to the water droplets propelled by the popping of the air bubbles benefits

from an aeroponic environment. An aerated system such as this tends to perform better and have a higher success rate than a simple glass of water under the same conditions. To take this same method a step further, an air-lift driven sprayer can be used to concentrate and raise the popping bubble effect, allowing the ends of plant stems to stay at a height above the waterline. Since at this point, as far as the plant is concerned, it has stopped being air-pumped into the water and become water-pumped into the air, it can be considered an aeroponic system. At least until the roots grow to the waterline. Almost all aeroponic systems eventually become hybrid aeroponic-DWC systems at some point, as the roots will tend to grow down far enough to reach the nutrient solution. Air lifts function because air bubbles will rise in the “Almost all aeroponic pipe, and water trapped systems eventually between air bubbles will become hybrid rise as well. This principle is commonly illustrated aeroponic-DWC in under-gravel aquarsystems at some point, ium filters. Air is released as the roots will tend at the bottom of a riser to grow down far tube. As the air bubbles rise, they carry some of enough to reach the the water along to be nutrient solution.” returned near the top of the tank. Water from the tank passes through the gravel bottom to replace the water lifted out of the tube by the air bubbles. Air lift sprayers use a similar method. Air is pumped through an airline into the sprayer riser near the bottom. Nutrient solution enters through a hole in the tube and is lifted along with the rising air bubbles. At the top end of the tube, the bubbles burst and spray the accompanying nutrient solution. Plant stem ends are suspended within range of the spray, allowing them to stay moist and get nutrients. To prevent the spray from making a mess of the surrounding area, a lid with holes cut for plants covers the reservoir and sprayer. The bottom end of the stem is suspended below the lid (but above the waterline) by a collar or net pot, with the rest of the cutting above where it can receive moderate light. Cool (but not cold) room temperatures are commonly considered ideal.

“The cutting will

become a genetic copy of an original plant, which is why they are referred to as clones.”

Making a Propagator

A small-scale propagator can be made from a small bucket, a matching lid with cloning collar-sized holes cut in it, collars or net pots, an air pump, airline, and a sprayer. This style of cloner can be undertaken as a DIY project, purchased in parts, or as a complete unit. This type of aeroponic cloning has several advantages. As with most aeroponic systems it is practically impossible to overwater the cuttings. Since it uses an external air pump, the motor and most of the accompanying waste heat can be kept away from the nutrient solution. Air-driven sprayers can have much larger apertures than forced water sprayers, and as such are much less prone to clogging. Since the sprayer itself has no moving parts, as long as there is an air supply, there is little in the way of failure potential unless it’s somehow physically moved, broken, or the openings become completely engulfed with roots.

OMRI listed

As an alternative, a water pump can be placed inside the reservoir to force the nutrient solution through a manifold-sprayer assembly. This sprays the cuttings from below, again keeping them hydrated while they develop a root system. Aeroponic cloning is one of the easier and more foolproof ways to root cuttings. For the impatient or concerned, progress and health of the roots can be monitored simply by lifting the cloner lid for a look. In smaller systems, water changes can be as simple as dumping out and refilling a small bucket. It isn’t uncommon for users of aeroponic cloning techniques to report root development a few to several days faster than with older traditional methods. The same concepts can be applied to both small- and large-scale applications.

commercial vertical farming operation, a top-of-the-line pH pen probably won’t cut it for the daily monitoring of pH levels in thousands of gallons of water. Therefore, while the applicability of high-tech garden tools in certain scenarios is undeniable, their overall value is situationally relative. For those growers looking to ramp-up their garden operations with a modern facelift, or those just curious if high-tech growing is a good fit for them, Maximum Yield put together a brief look at some innovate garden technologies. Here is a short overview of high-tech tools for growrooms in 2019:

Grow Medium/Atmospheric Sensors

The implementation of sensor matrices throughout growrooms are giving modern cultivators a real-time understanding of garden environments. As most experienced indoor growers know, growroom operations are plagued by inconsistencies — these are notoriously difficult to detect in a uniform and intelligible manner. For instance, cultivation mediums retain water in varying capacities in different parts of a room.

“The implementation of sensor matrices throughout growrooms are giving modern cultivators a real-time understanding of garden environments.” Also, many indoor gardens have drastically different environmental conditions throughout a room, as well as “dead spots” in air circulation. To alleviate many of these challenges, tech companies have devised both soil meters and atmospheric sensors that can detect anomalies in the growroom before they start to express themselves negatively in plant health. Concerning moisture meters in grow mediums, they give cultivators a real-time understanding of watering needs in their gardens, helping avoid issues with overwatering. Individual atmospheric sensors give a reading on environmental conditions throughout a growroom and various parts of a garden canopy, which can be proactively rectified to avoid issues with mold and pathogens.

Software

One of the largest tech crazes in commercial CEA growing today has to do with software programs, as computers can utilize data metrics to help streamline production. For example, according to the website Fortune, the vertical farming company Bowery “has developed what it says is a proprietary software system with a robust network of sensors that takes in data in real time to determine outcomes like the quality, texture, color, and yield of its plants.” While it is evident that the sort of software being developed by Bowery is beyond the scope of the hobbyist grower, its efficacy for commercial applications is noteworthy. Because, when used in conjunction with sensors, this software can track and catalogue many fine nuances of CEA growing — a practice that is literally beyond the scope of human capabilities. As such, software programs can provide information on almost every aspect of a garden, providing the most efficient troubleshooting platforms horticulture has ever known.

Shelving

While many people don’t necessarily consider shelving to be high-tech, the use of shelving units engineered specifically for cultivation have literally revolutionized indoor gardening methods in the past decade. Currently, the practice of vertical farming would be non-existent without these forward-looking infrastructures. It’s important to note vertical farming shelf units are engineered to do far more than hold plants; the most advanced units have electrical and irrigation components built into the shelves. Similarly, and in tune with vertical farming’s themes of sustainability and efficiency, these shelves integrate with macro-hydroponics systems and are easily reorganized and moved. Finally, certain brands of shelving units are motorized and can shift different parts of the garden canopy throughout the day to ensure maximized usage of available light.

Robotics

Commercial agriculture businesses have begun implementing robotics to handle some of the more tedious and laborious facets of cultivation, like plant pruning. However, there is an increasing upsurge in robotics designs for the home-based, hobbyist gardener. To illustrate, the company FarmBot has devised a robot that handles most gardening chores for small, raised bed gardens. The design team at FarmBot put together a robot that is mounted onto a frame which is compatible with square or rectangular garden beds. The hardware of the FarmBot is integrated with data analytics software which can program the robot to accomplish most garden tasks, including tilling, weeding, planting, watering, and spraying. While this robot gardening technology is still far from the mainstream and retails for a hefty $4,000, it presents an interesting tech tool for those gardeners interested in experimenting with the cutting-edge of home cultivation.

Sensors (top), robotics (center), and software (bottom), are all advancing in technology and implemetation throughout the growing industry.

36

Maximum Yield

Gardening technology has grown exponentially in its breadth and sophistication. However, it’s also evident that no technology presents a cure-all for all horticultural processes and operations. That being said, a majority of new advancements in equipment and software are more applicable in commercial operations, with a potential trickle-down into home-based tech such as the FarmBot. Looking forward, it will be interesting to see how technological innovations will influence gardening practices in the future.

WEEDS IN MY GREENHOUSE?

Say it ain’t so! by Shannon McKee

When it comes to greenhouse growing, weeds are still something horticulturists must deal with and eradicate. Shannon McKee shows indoor growers how to stamp out weeds and keep them from returning. greenhouse is the perfect environment for growing all types of lovely plants. Some of us use Yourour greenhouses to extend our growing season so we

can grow through the spring and fall, and in some setups, even get fresh crops in the winter. Others use their greenhouse to grow plants that are more exotic than what they can grow throughout the year. No matter how you use your greenhouse, it’s not just the perfect growing environment for the plants you want — it’s also a perfect growing environment for weeds. Some may have this misconception that growing in an enclosed environment means no pesky things like insects or weeds. The truth is you can have problems like weeds. Let’s go over how you can abolish them from your greenhouse once they’ve taken hold, and what steps you need to take to prevent them from getting a foothold again in the future.

38

“The most optimal way

to handle greenhouse weeds is the old-fashioned method of pulling them out completely using a weed puller.”

HANDLING A CURRENT WEED ISSUE

Your first impulse may be to purchase a weed killer and go whole hog on killing off all the weeds in your greenhouse. This attempt may be the quickest way to kill the weeds in your greenhouse, but it could also damage the crops you’re intentionally growing. The most optimal way to handle greenhouse weeds is the old-fashioned method of pulling them out completely using a weed puller. You’ll definitely want to make sure you pull them out roots and all as they can come back if you don’t get the entire root. This effort can be backbreaking work, but the result is worth it.

HERBICIDES — NATURAL AND CHEMICAL

If you do turn toward a natural or chemical solution, be sure to find one that fits your needs and carefully follow the directions. Some herbicides are specially formulated to be used inside a greenhouse, so it can be helpful to find one that’s labeled for this purpose. Spraying it all around your greenhouse will probably result in other plants being hit by the weed killer. There are some weed killers on the market that are intended to be used against specific plants where you apply a gel to the leaves of the plants you want to be eliminated, and this may be a better option for your greenhouse if you’re being overrun.

STOP WEED SEEDS BEFORE THEY START

You want to try eliminating greenhouse weeds before they go to seed. If the weeds have gotten to this point, you’ll have to deal with weeds a lot longer than just handling the visible ones.

PREVENTING WEEDS IN THE FUTURE

There are several things that you can do to prevent weeds from taking hold down the road. One of the key ways to prevent weeds in your greenhouse is to keep track of everything that comes into your greenhouse. You want to use clean media that’s not going to be contaminated with weed seeds. Taking soil from other areas of your garden or yard may mean you’re introducing seeds into your greenhouse. It’s also important to control any weeds in the surrounding area of your greenhouse. Having tons of weeds outside will eventually cause their seeds to make their way into your perfect growing environment. Keep in mind that if you use herbicides outside of your greenhouse to handle this growth, be sure to protect the plants inside of your greenhouse by closing vents, windows, and other openings to prevent it drifting inside. You may even find it helpful to use weed barrier cloth inside of your greenhouse. If you have a dirt floor, apply it to the floor in addition to your growing beds. A weed barrier may seem like overkill, but it can be helpful. You’ll want to monitor any newly potted plants you bring into your greenhouse in the future. There’s the possibility they may be harboring weeds. As soon as you notice anything additional growing with your new plants, you’re going to want to take care of it. Additionally, you’ll want to wash anything that had dirt in it if you’re planning on reusing at a later date. This washing will remove any weed seed residue in addition to other potential problems that were in the soil. Stop the comeback before it starts. Don’t stop at just washing your pots and other growing containers. You should also be cleaning and sanitizing your gardening tools, as well. Maximum Yield

“It’s also important

to control any weeds in the surrounding area of your greenhouse.” VIGILANCE IS KEY

No matter how you work to prevent weeds in the future, there’s always the possibility of them making their way back into your greenhouse. If you become lax in checking for weeds, they will take the opportunity to start thriving again. Haven’t you ever noticed that where there was a single weed one day, several more appear in no time? You want to catch weeds early on, so vigilance is key to keeping them out for good. Weed control is something you can’t neglect in your greenhouse. You don’t want to end up having to deal with weeds when you could be doing what you love and just growing your favorite plants. Take care of the weeds you have, and work towards preventing them in the future.

CO2 Enrichment, Acclimation, and Efficiency in Hydroponic Growing While many commercial growers use carbon dioxide to boost crop quality, yield, and growth rates, Lynette Morgan explains how home hydroponic horticulturists can also take advantage of CO2 enrichment.

C

arbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential requirement for photosynthesis and can be somewhat overlooked by newer growers. Being odorless, invisible, and only a small fraction of our atmosphere, CO2 often doesn’t get the same attention as nutrients, lights, and other plant-growth factors. The use of CO2 enrichment to boost yields, quality, and growth rates under hydroponic production is, however, widely used in commercial greenhouse horticulture and has an even greater potential in enclosed growing spaces. While simply pumping in some additional CO2 may seem like a straightforward option, the use of this technology is a little more complex if its potential is to be maximized and problems minimized.

CO2 Enrichment

Ambient CO2 levels in air are a little more than 400 ppm (or 0.04 per cent by volume), however, plant tissue contains an average of 45 per cent carbon that comes entirely from CO2. By boosting CO2 levels surrounding the leaf surface, above ambient levels, the rate of photosynthesis increases up until the point where some other factor, such as the speed at which plant enzymes will work, is reached. Essentially, the transfer of CO2 from the surrounding air to the reaction centers in the leaf chloroplasts depends both on the concentration difference between the air and these sites, and the intervening biochemical resistance in various leaf tissues. This means that while CO2 enrichment will boost photosynthesis, there comes a point were further increases will not occur and plant damage becomes a possibility. Determining this optimal level of CO2 enrichment for a particular plant or stage of growth is where the application of CO2 needs some careful thought. Carbon dioxide enrichment has become more popular in recent times with hydroponic growers using a range of lowand high-tech options to boost CO2 levels. The most common methods of generating CO2 include burning hydrocarbon fuels and the use of compressed, bottled CO2. Smaller growers with a very limited growing space may use dry ice (solid, very cold CO2) which releases CO2 as it “melts” under warm conditions. Fermentation or the decomposition of organic matter (composting and fungi) are still effective but less accurate ways of boosting CO2 levels through natural processes. Whichever method is used to generate CO2, levels should be regularly monitored, either with a hand held CO2 meter or as part of the environmental control system in the growing area.

“Determining this optimal level

of CO2 enrichment for a particular plant or stage of growth is where the application of CO2 needs some careful thought.”

Top: Tomatoes, a crop with a high sink strength, benefit the most from CO2 enrichment during the fruit development stage. Bottom: CO2 enrichment is highly beneficial for heavy fruiting crops such as eggplant, tomato, cucumber, and capsicum.

Enrichment Levels

If CO2 enrichment is to be applied, then determining the correct level is as important with this gaseous element as it is with nutrient levels. The benefits and levels of CO2 enrichment is crop dependent, but most plants respond well to levels in the range of 500–1,500ppm. Below 200ppm, CO2 begins to severely limit plant growth, but more than 2,000ppm of CO2 becomes toxic to many plants. More than 4,000ppm is a risk to humans. An excess of CO2 will cause crop damage in the form of CO2 toxicity, which is often misdiagnosed as mineral deficiencies or disease symptoms. Mild CO2 toxicity can cause stunting of growth, or leaf-aging type symptoms, while excessive levels may cause leaf damage such as chlorosis (yellowing), necrosis (death of leaf tissue), curling and/ or thickening of the leaves. There is much debate over which level of enrichment is ideal for each crop, under various different growing conditions, however, the most economic use of CO2 is in enriching crops to above ambient levels, but not more than 1,200ppm. Most commercial growers enrich to within the range of 600-800ppm where an increase in growth and yields of between 20-30 per cent are common.

“The use of CO2 enrichment to boost

yields, quality, and growth rates under hydroponic production is, however, widely used in commercial greenhouse horticulture and has an even greater potential in enclosed growing spaces.”

CO2 Efficiency

To make the most of CO2 enrichment, other growth factors need to be considered and manipulated. Carbon dioxide enrichment will produce the best results in terms of plant growth, yield increases, and shortening the time to maturity where there is high light to power rapid levels of photosynthesis. If light is insufficient or below the light saturation point for the crop, then boosted CO2 levels cannot be fully utilized by the plants. Temperature also plays a role in the efficient use of CO2. Under conditions of high light and CO2 enrichment, temperatures can be run higher than they would normally, and this maximizes the effect of additional CO2. Studies have shown that for tomato plants, a threefold level of CO2 enrichment will increase net photosynthesis by about 50 per cent in both dull and bright light, but if leaf temperature is also raised (to 86°F), the increase in net CO2 fixation can be as high as 100 per cent in bright light. This means that while boosting CO2 in an indoor hydroponic system will boost growth rates, consideration should be given at the same time to manipulation of the other environmental factors of light and temperature if the valuable CO2 is to be used with the highest degree of efficiency. Top: CO2 assists with root development on cuttings and clones in many species. Bottom: CO2 introduced to a growing area needs to be thoroughly mixed and distributed through dense canopies for maximum uptake.

While CO2 enrichment is largely used on fruiting crops such as tomatoes, capsicum, and cucumber, it can benefit a wide range of plant species. Indoor gardens with ornamental, potted, and flowering plants also respond to CO2 enrichment with increased rates of growth and leaf area, increased rates of flowering, more lateral breaks, earlier flowering, greater flower number, reduced flower drop, and increased flower diameter as well as improved leaf color and reduced time to maturity. Carbon dioxide also assists with root development on cuttings and clones in many species and may be applied via enrichment of the air or through the use of carbonated mist.

44

Maximum Yield

“Carbon dioxide also assists with root development on cuttings and clones in many species and may be applied via enrichment of the air or through the use of carbonated mist.”

Another often overlooked factor is CO2 distribution around the plants. Simply releasing or generating CO2 for enrichment into the growing area is often not sufficient to get the maximum rate of photosynthesis unless this is directed and circulated over leaf surfaces. A stale boundary layer of moist air, depleted in CO2 due to photosynthesis, can form directly around the leaf surface and this needs frequent removal and replenishment. Whatever source of CO2 generation is being used, it is vital that the enriched atmosphere is thoroughly mixed so the valuable CO2 is delivered to plant surfaces for uptake and assimilation. Small mixer fans can be used to gently circulate the air away from the source of CO2 generation and toward the crop. To monitor this process, hand-held CO2 meters are useful to check levels in and around the canopy rather than just at the point of CO2 release. Keeping a check on CO2 levels inside a small growing area is vitally important, no matter what the source of CO2 used. It can be difficult to judge how much CO2 the plants are taking up and in tightly sealed growing environments, CO2 accumulation can occur and cause plant damage.

CO2 Acclimation

CO2 enrichment is undoubtedly a great growth-promoting tool for hydroponic growers, however, it has its limitations and risks. Plants have the ability to adjust and adapt to increasing CO2 levels, so that over time, acclimation occurs. When CO2 enrichment is first introduced to a crop, there is a rapid increase in photosynthesis and growth, but as plant growth continues, the effect of the increased CO2 levels becomes less and less so that by the time the crop is completed, overall yields were not as high as the increase in early yield. Numerous studies have reported this effect with plants grown continuously at high CO2 levels having a photosynthetic rate that tends to decrease with time. If a crop grown at elevated CO2 levels is suddenly given only ambient CO2, it will recover back to normal rates of photosynthesis within five days. Some growers have attempted to prevent this acclimation of crops to high CO2 levels by only supplying CO2 intermittently, or avoiding the use of CO2 enrichment until a vital stage of development, such as flowering or fruit set, has been reached when the boost in photoassimilate is most valuable to yields. Studies have shown the problem of CO2 acclimation can be reduced or eliminated if the plant has strong “sinks” for the assimilate produced in the leaves. These sinks for assimilate include rapidly developing tissues such as buds, flowers, and fruits. Plants with a low sink strength often end up with carbohydrate accumulating in the leaves under CO2 enrichment, which in turn triggers acclimation and a reduction in photosynthesis. Despite the issue of plant acclimation to high CO2 levels limiting the overall potential boost to growth, CO2-enriched plants still produce photosynthetic rates higher than those grown at ambient CO2 levels.

CO2 enrichment to levels of 500-1,500ppm is common for hydroponic crops, but is species dependant.

46

Maximum Yield

Carbon dioxide enrichment is a worthwhile tool for indoor and greenhouse growers which is well proven in a wide range of crop species to increase growth rates and yields. However, as with most high-tech techniques, it requires monitoring, attention to detail, and careful consideration of the effect on biochemical processes. If CO2 is to be used at maximum efficiency, correct rates of application, adjustments to light and temperature, timing of enrichment, and consequences of CO2 acclimation all need consideration.

LOW COST SENSORS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS:

by Lee Allen

If you’re a home horticulturist and are looking for some low-cost automation to help with your small greenhouse, there’s no need to spend a ton of money, as Lee Allen explains.

W

hile many automated agricultural control systems are expensive and geared towards commercial operations, a little Raspberry Pi is perfect for home growers. A single-board Raspberry Pi (originally developed to assist in computer technology needs in poor countries) works great as a controller for a bunch of single program operational micro-controllers like Arduino’s that can be looped indefinitely and will do simple and repetitive tasks. The device is perfect for a hobby greenhouse. “I call these folks micro-culture growers,” says Brian Little, agricultural and biosystems engineer and systems administrator at the University of Arizona. “Sophisticated environmental monitoring and control systems like those found in commercial controlled environment cultivation can often be cost-prohibitive, but a single board Raspberry Pi is inexpensive and works great as a controller that can be connected to a bread board and a ton of sensors.

“It’s a cheap way to monitor lighting, irrigation, It’s a cheap way to monitor lighting, irrigation, water quality, humidity, temperature, wind speed, hydration water quality, humidity, temperature, rates — all kinds of applications to help the small wind speed, hydration rates — all kinds of grower. You don’t need scientific accuracy just to grow some tomatoes in your backyard, and slaving a bunch of applications to help the small grower.” Raspberry Pi’s together will do the job needed without any bells and whistles.” Little explains further that a home grower can easily build a redundant system with more than one control in operation, should one happen to malfunction. “Build yourself something small to accomplish your needs. Don’t be afraid to try something new, because when your price point is less than $50, you’re less afraid of frying or bricking one of these devices and because of the limited dollars involved, it allows for a redundant system. The beauty of this is you can have several controls and if one goes down, it’s not going to take out your whole system.” Billing himself as a pioneer in heuristic engineering, Little is a proponent of building an urban microculture entity that would target urbanites with a blockchain-based app to allow them to get started on growing their own food more efficiently. Based on local information, it would provide recommendations on what crops to grow, how, and when — kind of a socially motivated data base of information that easily accessible for anyone. A single board Raspberry Pi works great as a controller that can be connected to sensors.

Little recently returned from the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture in Abu Dhabi, where he presented his research on low-cost technology His message was: “Recent advances in technology, like Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and other off-the-shelf products, have made a plethora of options available for low-cost sensors and controls to assemble do-it-yourself systems that will facilitate crop optimization.” Little has built units that will sense low light and open a shade for more sun, or gas sensors that will monitor air quality, or note the presence of methane. He’s used the simple technology to rig a small container farm with integrated systems, everything from water quality monitoring to measuring pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, adjusting humidity, and even a fogger application to keep mushrooms moist. He’s rigged drones with a cheap camera system to automatically pollinate date palms. In Glendale, AZ, he’s working on solving a bird problem at a dairy. “It’s biblical,” he says, “so many birds they blot out the sky. We created a bank of Raspberry Pi cameras and a control module that implements computer vision to detect the birds — and emit some sort of deterrent to send them on their way.” Bottom line for Little is the DIY way for smaller-scale growers can be a viable alternative to commercial systems but, he adds, “By no means is a DIY system on par with a Hortimax controller.” The old adage “size doesn’t matter” really does apply in this case with Little conveying the caveat he’s promoting the inexpensive, do-it-yourself approach “for small- and medium-scale food production.” Bottom line? If you’re a small grower who likes to experiment, you belong to the group of backyard pioneers, the Carpe Diem group — seize the day. If your operation is larger, to the point where any sort of a process malfunction could damage crops beyond the required market quality condition, you probably belong to the Caveat Emptor sector — buyer beware.

SI CK PL AN TS

getting the diagnosis right

by Sally Nex

52

Maximum Yield

As in humans, the symptoms of one plant problem can look a lot like another. Here are a few tips on how to make the right diagnosis and how to avoid issues altogether.

A

s any doctor will tell you, the symptoms of one disease can look a lot like another. A patient complaining of headaches could be suffering from stress at work, poor eyesight, migraines, or a brain tumor. An aching knee can be caused by overdoing it at the gym, tendonitis, arthritis, or brittle bone disease. It’s the same when you’re trying to figure out what’s wrong with your plants. Yellowing leaves can be a normal sign of aging or something more sinister like iron deficiency. Without knowing what’s wrong, you won’t know what to do to put it right. Worse yet, you might administer the wrong medicine entirely. To make the right diagnosis, growers need to dig a little deeper, ask the right questions, and weigh all sorts of clues. It’s a sleuthing exercise Columbo would be proud of.

Making the Right Diagnosis

“WITHOUT KNOWING

Diseases can be fungal, bacterial, or WHAT’S WRONG, YOU viral, and they can affect leaves, stems, or roots. Pests attack all parts of a plant, WON’T KNOW WHAT TO eating away tissue or tunnelling holes DO TO PUT IT RIGHT.“ that then develop secondary fungal infections. Then, there are cultural problems, the plant equivalent of malnutrition or heatstroke. These physiological ailments caused by less-than-ideal growing conditions. Regular patrols of your plants allow you to spot problems quickly, so spend a few minutes every day just assessing what shape your plants are in. That way you’ll notice every hole, puckered shoot tip, or browning leaf the moment it appears, and you can swing into action before a pathogen takes hold. Even the slightest delay can dramatically worsen the problem you’re dealing with; aphids, for example, reproduce so fast they quintuple their numbers every 24 hours, while blight can destroy a previously healthy tomato crop in as little as 10 days. Deciding which you’re dealing with is a matter of detective work. Arm yourself with a good reference book on pests and diseases before you start so you have all the information you need at your fingertips. The American Horticultural Society’s Pests and Diseases is among the best. It’s a complete guide to every kind of plant ailment with advice on prevention and treatment, as well as identification. Be methodical in your inspections and try to keep an open mind. It may not be the obvious sign that tells you what the problem is. It could be something much more minor and difficult to spot, so look closely. Turn the leaves up and look at the undersides and inspect tender new growth like shoot tips where pests like to gather. Take note of cultural conditions such as weather and when the plants were last watered. Also remember many pests and diseases stick to just one family of plants. For example, stunted growth in brassicas like cabbage and cauliflower could be caused by clubroot, a nasty fungal disease that only attacks this group of plants. However, if your cucumbers are also stunted, the cause is more likely to be a mosaic virus. Gradually, you narrow down the field to just a few possibilities and, eventually, a firm diagnosis. Then, treatment can begin.

Prevention is Better Than Curing

They say an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, and that is so true with plants. By the time you’ve spotted signs of a pathogen, some damage is already done. So, grow disease-resistant varieties where you can, and pay attention to hygiene. Take the few seconds to disinfect pruning shears between plants and spend half a day cleaning the greenhouse properly at the end of the season to evict overwintering pests; these small tasks make all the difference in keeping your plants healthy. Just as important is growing your plants well. Keep them growing as vigorously as you can by feeding and mulching regularly and providing just the right amount of water, light, and humidity, and they’ll shrug off pest and disease attacks with ease.

FIVE EASILY CONFUSED PLANT PROBLEMS

TWO

BLIGHT OR DROUGHT STRESS?

Late blight (Phytopthora infestans) is a devastating fungal infection whose name strikes dread into any vegetable cultivator growing in a mild, damp climate. Once rain washes late blight spores onto your plants, they spread voraciously, reducing potatoes and tomatoes to rotten mush within a few weeks. Alarm bells should start ringing as soon as you spot tell-tale brown patches on the leaves. However, brown spots also turn up on tomato and potato leaves after prolonged spells of drought. Plants usually recover from drought, but blight is always fatal. Telling Them Apart: At first glance, the browning caused by drought damage and the lesions of late blight look quite similar. But look closer and you’ll find the brown patches on drought-stressed leaves are just dry, dead leaf. Blight lesions, by contrast, are fuzzy with spores. They also sometimes appear on the stem.

ONE

RED SPIDER MITE OR MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY?

Imagine a greenhouse full of cucumbers whose leaves gradually begin to turn yellow. At a glance, you could easily diagnose the problem as a lack of magnesium, an essential mineral that plants need to produce healthy leaves and photosynthesize. However, look closer and you may notice tiny specks clustering under the leaves and fine web-like threads. These are the tell-tale signs of the red spider mite, a tiny but voracious sap-sucker that attacks most greenhouse crops from mid to late summer. Telling Them Apart: Red spider mites tend to cause finely mottled leaves, while a magnesium deficiency causes leaves to be blotchier. Also, unlike with red spider mites, the veins of magnesium-deficient leaves stay green. To make sure what you’re dealing with, turn the leaves over. Red spider mites appear as tiny yellowish-green specks on the undersides. As infections build, they also produce a fine silk webbing much like cobwebs. Treatment: Red Spider Mite: Keep numbers down by releasing a biological control such as the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, or spray with insecticidal soap. Magnesium Deficiency: Spray leaves with a foliar feed made of a solution of Epsom salts two or three times every two weeks.

54

Treatment: Blight: Remove affected foliage to slow the spread. Pick off tomato fruits straight away. For potatoes in which the infection covers about a third of the plant, cut away the top growth and harvest early. Drought damage: Prune out affected growth and the plant should recover. Also take the steps to improve water delivery. A compost mulch over damp soil locks in water, and irrigation channels alongside each row make sure none is lost to evaporation.

ONION FLY OR ONION WHITE ROT?

You’ll probably never see an onion fly. It’s small, grey, and unremarkable. You’ll notice the damage its larvae cause, though. They work out of sight, munching through onion, shallot, and garlic bulbs to reduce entire beds to soft, rotten mush just as they reach their peak. However, onions can also rot mid-season from another, more sinister cause. Onion white rot is one of the most persistent fungal diseases. It produces pinhead-sized black resting bodies known as sclerotia, which survive in the soil for 15 years or more, reinfesting and ruining each successive crop.

FOUR

SLUG DAMAGE OR DAMPING OFF?

Telling them apart: The first symptoms are superficially the same: leaves wilt and turn brown and the top of the bulb begins to rot. Dig up an affected bulb, though, and look closely. White rot begins at the base of the bulb, spreading upwards from the roots. Onion fly maggots, however, start at the top and work down. You’ll sometimes also see them wriggling in the top of the bulb. Treatment: Onion Fly: Lift the damaged bulbs and burn them to kill the maggots. Rotate crops into clean ground each year, and plant under mesh to prevent adults laying their eggs. Onion White Rot: White rot is almost impossible to get rid of once established, so prevent it by buying seed and sets from a reliable source. Good garden hygiene helps too. If you have infested ground, grow onions in containers instead.

A gardener never tires of that magical moment when new seedlings unfurl from the compost for the first time. So, when your seed trays stay resolutely empty or produce just straggly patches of weedy, sorry-looking shoots, it hits you right where it hurts. Your local slug population may have discovered there’s a fine new meal to be had, munching away your new shoots the moment they poked their heads above ground. Or your babies may have succumbed to damping off, a vicious fungal pathogen capable of destroying a tray of healthy seedlings within hours. Telling them apart: Slugs leave a tell-tale trail of slime wherever they go, so this is your giveaway for a slimy mollusc attack. Damping off, on the other hand, is a fungal disease. When it attacks seedlings after they emerge, you’ll see their remains on the surface, often covered in white, fluffy mold. Pre-emergence damping off happens below compost level, so your seedlings simply fail to come up. Treatment: Slug Damage: Check your seed trays daily, especially when it’s damp, to search out and destroy lurking slugs. Wildlife-friendly ferrous phosphate slug pellets also help. Damping Off: Use sterilized seed compost and clean containers, and sow seeds sparingly to allow lots of air circulation between the resulting seedlings. Don’t water with rainwater, which can carry disease, and keep trays damp but not soggy.

“REGULAR PATROLS OF YOUR PLANTS ALLOW YOU TO SPOT PROBLEMS QUICKLY, SO SPEND A FEW MINUTES EVERY DAY JUST ASSESSING WHAT SHAPE YOUR PLANTS ARE IN.“

FIVE

DOWNY MILDEW OR POWDERY MILDEW?

These fungal diseases are both bad news, turning up as fluffy fungal growth on foliage and fruit that spread rapidly through your plants and turn your crops to mush. That’s where the similarity ends, though. Downy mildew is a damp-conditions fungus. It likes the cool, wet conditions of spring and autumn, and it turns grapes, lettuces, peas, and spinach to white, moldy rot. Powdery mildew prefers dry conditions. It turns up in the heat of summer on zucchini, squash, and cucumbers, weakening plants and bringing the harvest to a sudden, early stop. Telling them apart: The climate and time of year tells you which of these two nasties you’re most likely dealing with. They look different too. Powdery mildew is obvious, appearing on the upper surfaces of leaves as a dusting of white. Downy mildew is more difficult to diagnose. It can cause leaves to develop pale yellow or green blotches. Turn them over and you’ll find a corresponding patch of fluffy fungal growth.

“TO MAKE THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS, GROWERS NEED TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER, ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS, AND WEIGH ALL SORTS OF CLUES.”

Treatment: Downy Mildew: Pick off affected leaves to slow the spread. In greenhouses, open vents whenever possible and water at the feet of plants to avoid wetting their leaves. Powdery Mildew: Keep plants well-watered, as dry roots make them more susceptible to the disease. Pick off infected leaves to slow the spread. Also, look for resistant varieties to grow next year. When you first discover your sick plants, diseases and pest attacks can seem like mysterious disasters. Don’t panic, though. Take time to methodically work through the symptoms and figure out exactly what’s wrong. Once you know the ailment, like any good doctor, you can prescribe the right medicine. With the right prescription, and a little luck, your plants should bounce back and make a full recovery.

THE FUTURE OF F A RM ING Named for 17th century Dutch farm plots where Manhattan now sits, Bowery Farming is named as a nod to the past but is clearly focused on the future of farming. Maximum Yield’s Alan Ray sat down with Bowery Farming CEO Irving Fain to discuss the future of food security and how modern farming is changing to meet those challenges.

Those Bowerijs are what fed the city and served as the inspiration for the creation of Bowery Farming and growing food for a better future.” — Irving Fain

T

he Bowery of New York has an infamous and storied past. This notorious district in southern Manhattan was synonymous with destitution and debauchery in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Admittedly, when I hear the word Bowery, it conjures an image of flop houses, back alley bars, and dangerous derelicts. A vespiary of seedy activity. I certainly don’t think of farming. Well, I didn’t used to. Rewind to an earlier time, however, and you’ll find rich farm land being cultivated by Dutch farmers beginning in the 17th century. During that period of history, the fertile expanse of land was called the Bouwerij, the Dutch term for farm, and the landscape was dotted with a great many of them.

THE NEW BOWERY

Bowery Farming in Kearny, NJ, is not only reshaping that old, negative image of the Bowery, it is changing the agricultural paradigm to reflect a more realistic approach to growing enough healthy food to feed a hungry and growing population. Within its closely guarded walls work an array of sleepless sensors, mini monitors, and cameras that watch over and control every aspect of every plant throughout the growing process. The greens produced at this facility are setting a new standard of excellence in taste and nutrition, while secret technology works to reduce the facility’s environmental impact through advanced farming practices. The Bowery website states “(our) post-organic produce is the next evolution in farming.” After interviewing Bowery’s co-founder and CEO, Irving Fain, the future of farming seems bright indeed.

Left to right - Bowery co-founders Irving Fain, Brian Falther, and David Golden.

THE MAN BEHIND THE PLAN

Fain is an innovative renaissance man of respectable note in the digital and financial worlds and is now turning his enterprising eye toward agriculture. At 38, he is currently the visionary behind Bowery Farming, a high-tech hydroponic smart farm that grows greens of the highest quality and supplies them to local markets and restaurants within 24 hours of harvest. My heartfelt thanks to Fain and his assistant, Ali Weltman, for taking the time to answer Maximum Yield’s questions about Bowery Farming.

BOWERY OPERATES LARGE-SCALE, COMMERCIAL INDOOR FARMS that grow leafy greens and herbs,

Please tell us about the Bowery facility. How large an area does it cover and what do you grow there? While we don’t share information about size or output, we’re expanding quickly. Our next farm, which opens this summer, will produce 30 times more than our current operation. Bowery operates large-scale, commercial indoor farms that grow leafy greens and herbs, harvested and delivered locally within a day.

How many people are currently needed to run the farm in Kearny? We currently have 38 people (and counting) working at Bowery, ranging from modern farmers to engineers, software developers, and sales representatives.

Do you clone or is your food grown purely from seed, and what’s the turnaround time from seed to harvest? Bowery produce is grown from non-GMO seeds that are selected for flavor and quality. Not only do we grow more than twice as fast as the field in many cases, but because we grow indoors, year-round, we also grow more crop cycles per year and are more than 100 times more productive per square foot of land than traditional agriculture.

How about water usage, is the water cleaned and reused? Our indoor growing methods save 95-plus per cent of water over traditional farming because we use an automated irrigation system that can measure and maintain optimal levels of water to support plant growth. This ensures that we give our plants what they need and nothing more, and we can recycle the water that’s left over.

Do you intend to expand the menu there to include melons, tomatoes, potatoes, and other crops? Right now, we’re focused on delivering the highest quality and best tasting leafy greens possible, but we’ve already started experimenting with other types of produce and plan to expand our offerings in the near future. Because we grow indoors and are unaffected by seasonality, we’re able to test many different types of crops that are normally tricky to grow in the northeast.

As the produce is continuously monitored by an array of watchdog sensors, would you say your farm is an amalgamation of an Internet of Things platform, machine to machine, and vertical farming? BoweryOS, our proprietary technology system, functions as the brain of the farm, monitoring plants and the variables that drive their growth 24/7, in addition to serving as a workflow management system. BoweryOS can automatically adjust environmental conditions to optimize plant growth, quality, yield, and flavor, while utilizing an extensive network of sensors and cameras to collect millions of data points in real-time. By capturing large amounts of data at each step, BoweryOS can constantly iterate on each environmental input in order to provide all crops with exactly what they need to thrive. For example, if BoweryOS detects signs of stress in a crop based on images from its vision system, it can automatically reduce the light that the crop receives in order to return the plant to optimal growth and quality.

Bowery produce is grown from non-GMO seeds that are selected for

FLAVOR AND QUALITY.

With Bowery in absolute control over the entire growing process to include color, texture, and nutrition, do you believe this “creation to specification” to be the wave of the future in indoor farming? Yes, controlling the entire growing process from seed to store comes with so many benefits. It means our produce is the purest available and food you can truly feel good about eating. It also allows for us to grow with zero pesticides. Because we grow in a completely closed environment, we also drastically minimize the risk of contamination from food-borne illness. We’re uniquely positioned to reduce food waste because BoweryOS precisely allocates the exact amount of resources that our plants need for optimal growth and tells us when to harvest them at their peak to reduce spoilage. Because we grow near the urban centers we serve, Bowery produce is in stores less than a day after harvest, reducing spoilage in transit and extending shelf-life.

Do you believe hydroponic/vertical gardening is the future of sustainable farming? Yes. The global population is projected to reach 9-10 billion people by 2050 (75-80 per cent of which will live in and around cities). To feed a population of that size, we’ll need 70 per cent more food, meaning that more food will need to be produced in the next four decades than has been produced in the last 10,000 years. Bowery is 100-plus times more productive on the same footprint of land. While vertical stacking is part of the increase in productivity, we are also able to grow many crops twice as fast as the field, with more crop cycles per year than the field, and more yield per crop cycle as well.

Is this method of smart-farming something you could see being scaled down to a family-sized undertaking as in a backyard greenhouse or basement? Our proprietary technology is meant for large-scale, commercial farming operations, but we’re really happy to see so much enthusiasm behind various farming methods, at home and beyond. There’s a clear need to improve upon the traditional agriculture industry and we believe in producing food in a way that’s better for us and our environment.

Finding ways to feed an exploding population is one of the greatest challenges facing farmers today and the agriculture world of tomorrow. Producing enough food without exhausting the planet’s limited resources will remain a demanding and daunting task. Enterprises like Bowery Farming are taking up that challenge. While large-scale indoor farming is still in its infancy, smart farms offer a sneak peek into what the future of farming might look like. Changing the way we farm in an effort to better feed the world is a noble and demanding undertaking and Bowery is helping lead the way by growing more food more efficiently in an eco-friendly environment.

FACTS ON

LETTUCE

1

Although there are many varieties, all lettuces grown for food are members of the species Lactuca sativa.

by Philip McIntosh

2

The genus name Lactuca comes from Latin, meaning “milky sap,” and the specific epithet sativa means “cultivated.”

Popular the world over, lettuce, in all its varieties, is one of most common plants seen in hydroponic culture.

Although perhaps not the oldest plant in cultivation,

Many plants possess a milky latex (Euphorbias and milkweeds for example) but there are few edible latex producers, Lactuca sativa being an important exception.

Some sources group lettuce cultivars into five groups,

Known as a cool weather species, lettuce does best if

A combination of shading and cooling of the nutrient solution has allowed lettuce to be grown indoors or in greenhouses year round, even in warm climates.

FREE LAMP RECYCLE PROGRAM

Growlite by Barron Lighting Group understands the needs of your grow site as well as the need to keep harmful substances like mercury, phosphors and rare earth elements from contaminating the country’s landfills and waterways. With those needs in mind, we are pleased to introduce the Growlite Recycling Program. The Growlite Recycling Program is easy, and convenient in just four (4) easy steps. 1. Include the part number GLL-RECYCLE as a line item on your return order. 2. When you re-lamp your fixtures with the new Growlite lamps, use that existing packaging for the old, spent lamps. Please keep the lamps intact and unbroken, it makes the shipping and return much safer! 3. Attach the included return shipping label and the fluorescent green recycle sticker to the packaging that contains the old lamps that are being sent back for recycling. 4. Return the old lamps to Growlite, by either scheduling a pickup or taking the package to a nearby shipping location. DONE! It’s that easy. Once the old lamps are received at Growlite and quantities are verified, a certificate of recycling will be issued and sent to the end user. This certificate can be presented to municipal inspectors as proof that your facility is properly disposing of spent lamps. For more information on how Growlite can assist in your recycling efforts, call 800.533.3948 or email us at recycling@growlite.com.
