preface macarthur park, just west of downtown los angeles, has spent its existence encountering change, from a swamp in the mid 19th century to a wealthy resort destination at the turn of the 20th century. after wwii, suburban development and the removal of most of the area’s public transportation resulted in decay and mass exodus. economically disadvantaged populations moved in, resulting in a steady decline and attracting criminals and street gangs. in the 1990s the metro red line was built, passing through the park and spurring an effort to eventually restore the region to its former grandeur. site macarthur park, in the westlake neighborhood of los angeles. the 2 blocks south of wilshire blvd, north of w 7th st, west of s bonnie brae st, east of s alvarado st. existing infrastructure includes a red line/purple line subway station, several commercial zoned multi story buildings, and several parking lots. objective conduct team site analysis. design a transportation hub at the location of the existing subway stop, incoporating local bus/ auto systems, bike, and padestrian interchange. implement healthcare and retail program. produce diagrams, drawings, physical models and renderings. site analysis done in collaboration with: javier badillo, priscilla contreras, blaise freemont, hugo garcia, gordana green, robert panossian individual contribution: hexagonal time-line conceptual idea urban manifold external reference migration

preface the los angeles metropolitan area is home to 13 million residents. it has and will continue to encounter water shortage issues of great consequence. water reclamation measures are inevitable. the river, typically a source of nourishment, now runs through some of the most undernourished portions of los angeles. it is a natural ecosystem existing within a human ecosystem. flood control measures have essentially stripped the river community of it’s give and take relationship. site the frogtown portion of atwater village in los angeles, at the intersection of blake ave, knox ave, and newell st, against the glendale narrows segment of the la river, in a residential and industrial zoned portion of the neighbohood. objective design a water reclamation facility that implements natural “living system” technology. establish an external reference from which to obtain architectural inspiration. conduct proper site analysis. produce diagrams, drawings, physical models and renderings. process in an effort to restore the relationship between the district and the river, i engaged this issue at a neighborhood scale, to reclaim and recycle water, return a portion of the river to a natural ecosystem and a wetlands environment, and educate the public on the processes and potential of these systems. external reference alluvial deposits

spacial sequence study course instructor school term

architectural design 10b coleman griffith pasadena city college spring 09

preface the spacial sequence study is an exercise in understanding spacial types, from adjacent to interlocking and public to private spaces etc. objective select a case study that exhibits a clear use of public and private space. develop diagrams and spacial sequence models that demonstrate the relationships between circulation and the spaces that it intersects. build segments in sequential order allowing circulation segments to unlock public space segments. material walnut veneer_ base, private space acrylic_ public space bass wood_ circulation path

inflatable formation course instructor school term

materials and methods coleman griffith, dionicio valdez pasadena city college fall 08

preface the inflatable formation is a group exploration into the behaviors and potential uses of polyethylen sheeting as an architecture. much like the circulatory system of the human body, the formation consists of the pulmonary or primary circulation, and the systemic or secondary circulation. the primary circulation system is made up of iron welded 4 mil plastic, and acts as the load bearing structure. it is activated at three points by three high velocity fans, and combines at one central point. the excess air is distributed into the secondary circulation system, made up of iron welded 2 mil plastic, and provides the enclosure. the entire formation can be folded into one 7 gallon plastic bag, and will fully inflate in under 10 seconds. when anchored it can serve as an instant emergency shelter solution. research and fabrication done in collaboration with: mitch mckinley, louis boueri, alan chan marissa sherman, jose cruz macias

swell course instructor school term

visual communications 2 kelly bair pasadena city college spring 08

preface swell was designed as a summer-guest-sleeper to be assembled on the sight of the eames house in pacific palasades california. objective work within the scope of either a stranded or a tiled modular system, that was influenced by both a man-made and a natural precedent. the design consists of (customizable) pre-fabricated 2 plates that can be molded to form openings, shelving, stair systems and floor plates. these plates swell upward at 3 points (where required to neccesitate balance and structure) to permit simple stack and fasten assembly.
