Creative Thinking

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” — Maya Angelou

For this issue, our Annual Kitchen Edition, our theme is “The Dedicated Kitchen.” We asked interior designers: What does the dedicated kitchen mean to you? How do you design the space to meet all the needs of your clients? How does it become a place where imagination and functionality reach new heights? Learn what our industry peers revealed to us on the subject.

You might notice something different about our cover this issue. We decided to step out of the box by choosing one of our featured designers and doing a cover shoot. This is not something normally done in a shelter publication, but I said, what the heck—it’s time to have some fun. So I reached out to esteemed photographer Amy Vischio, whom I recently met here in Naples, FL, and trusted her to deliver a beautiful cover photo—and she did. And, of course, we cannot forget to say congratulations to our cover man, L.A DeRiggi, principal of Hudson Park Interior Design.

Look for more creative covers to come!

And, to our cherished readers, we hope you enjoy and are inspired by this issue!

Woodbine Rectangular Chandelier

Tom Caldwell’s inspiration for the design of the Woodbine Rectangular Chandelier was to take a natural style story and make it modern. He envisioned the utilitarian linear brown chandelier with a decided modern farmhouse feel as perfect for hanging over a bar or a long kitchen island. The wood slats of the handsome chandelier gain their u-shape from the horseshoe-like metal bands that fasten them together. The warm chestnut finish on the wood and brass finish on the metal bring this long, narrow chandelier an industrial vibe. curreyandcompany.com

French Riviera finesse meets mid-century modernism in the Azar pendant. The large drum shade is wrapped entirely in Bleached Abaca cord, allowing light to shine through. Finished in Vintage Gold Leaf, the angular frame takes its cues from vintage iron lighting as it peaks out from under the shade. Available in two sizes with either 4 or 6 lights, Azar provides a sophisticated lighting experience. hvlgroup.com

ASK THE EXPERTS

Where to Get Whimsical Wall Inspiration

The walls of our homes establish and define our spaces, creating cozy intimacy or majestic grandeur. But these reliable structures can do much more than create privacy—a beautifully styled wall can take your breath away. Interior designer Christopher Michiels of Haute Living Interiors offers his expertise on a variety of wall treatments that can excite any room.

Best of all, unlike a new bulky furniture piece, these spectacular wall ideas require no additional space—your walls are already there. Whether your wall backdrop is sweet and subtle or intensely dramatic, dressing up your walls can create a fun mood and stir emotions. “Wallcovering is an absolute must when you are looking to make a dramatic statement,” Christopher says. “This can be hand-inlaid water hyacinth reeds formatting a parquet pattern, genuine mother-of-pearl brick patterns, or stunning vinyl capturing the beauty of precious metals. Here are some of my personal musthaves for 2024.”

Wallpaper

Christopher encourages homeowners to explore today’s incredibly diverse wallpaper options that beg to be touched and admired. The vast choices for wallpaper knows no bounds. These include a kaleidoscope of color selections, including striking modern metallics, sophisticated patterns and textures that mesmerize the senses. Today’s wallpaper has come a long way from the green-ivy patterns, teddy-bear borders and horse-and-carriage prints to spectacular works of art that will enliven any space.

Tile

It’s not just for your shower floors and walls. Unlimited variations and pat-

terns of tile have adorned every imaginable space in the home and outdoors since 4,000 B.C., and its charm has lasted. Christopher notes some of the latest decorative innovations in luxury tile decor. “Hand-carved backlit marble tile foyer walls are popular, as are glass and marble waterjet-cut patterned vanity walls,” he says. “Metals, stone, glass, porcelain, ceramic and more are being used to create fabulous new innovative patterns from modern to traditional, to set your home apart from more pedestrian paint applications. Check out some of the rocking applications we have installed.” Indeed, Christopher and his team have thrilled their clients with creative and exquisite tile art, invigorating a routine space to elevated luxury.

Wood

Today’s attractive wood wall treatments venture far beyond adorning the typical Swiss chalet or humble winter cabin. Lavishly sculpted 3D wood design on walls can range from mellow and earthy to abundantly sumptuous, creating an atmosphere for the space. The variety of patterns and tones allow you to turn up the volume to make it dramatic, or soften and subdue an environment for the ultimate in relaxation. “3D-sculpted real wood patterns add the warmth of Mother Earth’s natural elements and more dimensions and sculpture to a wall than you can imagine,” says Christopher. “Almost any shape, size, color and wood species are available to ‘floor’ anyone with your fab wood walls! Forage through my design forest of wood options that will stun even the least adventurous.”

Murals

Forget cherubs, clouds, columns and grapevines. Contemporary murals are more akin to original works of fine art. Painted murals bring modern artistry and personal authenticity to your home. Did you fall in love with the

lush jungles of Belize on your last vacation? Professional mural artists can recreate enchanting, picturesque wonders in the theme that thrills you.

Christopher urges homeowners to let inspiration open the door to stimulating possibilities. “Use true artistry to tell your story via your walls with the gifts of a talented painter,” he says. “Consider a Deco living room, Bombay-themed dining room, Dr. Seuss-inspired kids’ room or tranquil Zen yoga studio. Let the scene transport your spirit elsewhere for the experience. Local artists and wallcovering companies offer some stunning options, depending upon your vision. Get your whimsical wheels whirling.”

3D Wall Panels

Who said only hotels can have them? Mimic the glamour of a lavish resort with astounding 3D wall panels that befit the finest presidential suite. Never thought of wall panels as playful? These spirited wall treatments play with shadows and the movement of light on their surfaces as the sun meanders across the sky, offering an ongoing visual performance.

“Oh, the drama!” says Christopher of this awe-inspiring option. “Sculpted wall panels are easy to apply and inexpensive, and can be painted or finished in any color. These products give everyone a chance to create that exclusive boutique hotel vibe to fit you and your budget. Don’t be scared to try something outside the box.”

Walls define our rooms and offer the opportunity to bring additional delight to our homes. Even the most perfectly designed spaces might feel tired after a while, and need to be uplifted with new wall treatments. Ranging from inexpensive to luxurious, the choices are limited only by your imagination.

warm glow, especially if the light provides the whole spectrum of color, rather than some LED options that do not. Thoughtful home and office lighting can help define spaces, create instant comfort and make a room feel inviting. When lighting our homes and offices, how can we think more like a lighting designer? Where do most homeowners go wrong with lighting? “Lack of vertical surface lighting,” says Justin. Many of us forget to light the walls and window coverings. Our rooms radiate a fantastic glow when light gently comes through the curtains, yet in the late evening, when the window dressings go dark, the space loses some measure of comfort and aesthetics.

Christopher Michiels of Haute Living Interiors in South Florida is a wall treatment expert, having worked with all the latest in exciting wall design possibilities. Whether you want to incorporate fine artisan tile, stunning wallpaper, earthy wood or dramatic 3D wall panels, you are guaranteed to find the fabulous wall treatment you need, giving you an ambience that will bring you joy.

The Ultimate Florida Kitchen: Tips and Trends to Elevate the Heart of Your Home

Your kitchen is more than just a cooking station—it’s the heart of your home and the expression of your personal style. If your kitchen is ready for a refresh and you want designer elegance, you’re in the right place. We spoke with local leading experts about the latest trends in appliances, countertops, backsplashes and more to help you elevate your kitchen.

Backsplashes

What products do you carry and are seeing in the market for backsplashes?

Antonio Sorhegui | Ruben Sorhegui Design

For backsplashes, it’s quite diverse. We do glass, marble, subway tiles, porcelain and glass slabs. One of our most popular lines is our mosaic marbles. The patterns, colors and finishes are all interchangeable, giving the client the ultimate set of options. What’s more, the scale of the pattern is customizable—clients love coming in with an inspiration image, and we can recreate and customize it to their preference. We use 3D renderings to ensure the clients know what they’re getting and to make the process go smoothly.

Loretta DeMarco | DeMarco Tile

We offer a wide range of products in our showroom. The majority of our products are imports—most are from Italy, but we also have options out of Spain and England. One particular line of handmade tiles from England is very popular right now.

Lizette Candela | GC Flooring

We carry a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, glass, stone, vinyl and wood.

What dopamine colors are you seeing on trend for backsplashes?

Antonio Sorhegui | Ruben Sorhegui Design

Given our location in the Naples area, blues and greens can be quite popular. We also see a lot of mid-century looks, so the amber and orange hues are a

fun pop of color we are seeing.

Mario Valle | PBS Contractors

Because many properties are waterfront, blues are big. It’s about bringing that water color from outside their home into the home. Homeowners pay a premium for the location and, psychologically, it brings them into this indoor/outdoor experience that is meaningful.

John Whitman | JMDG Architecture

Everyone has seen enough of the white Shaker cabinets with glass display shelves above—color is in! Full-height backsplashes are big right now—the color and pattern become the “artwork” of the space with a clean surface. Deep, moody colors are definitely trending in kitchens right now.

Loretta DeMarco | DeMarco Tile

We’ve never seen it before, but people are asking for…orange! We have some options, but most are special order because we didn’t stock it previously, since it wasn’t used often. Bright gold is another really big one, too. We’re seeing a lot of green in the bathrooms and accent areas, but not as much in kitchens.

Lizette Candela | GC Flooring

For starters, beige is back. Earth tones are in, too, along with light green and blue tones. We are noticing more clients are open to using black for accent walls, bars and outdoor kitchens, too. Beyond color, textured tile is a big hit as well.

Aside from the backsplash, where else would you put the same tiles used in the kitchen?

Antonio Sorhegui | Ruben Sorhegui Design

A lot of the backsplash tiles are interchangeable with the bathroom—particularly subway tiles. We’re also seeing a gravitation toward Zellige, which

IN THE FIELD 28 www.dd-mag.com Mullet’s Appliances

is a handcrafted Moroccan tile aesthetic. The handmade look is really popular; it gives a look of bespoke design and craftsmanship.

John Whitman | JMDG Architecture

Most of our clients still change finishes between rooms, but will stick with the same theme or color range. The powder room is always a standout and unique space, and the master bath is starting to truly become a destination in design, too.

Loretta DeMarco | DeMarco Tile

Not particularly the same tile, but clients are choosing to tile the supporting wall beneath their bar tops again, and using a coordinating tile to work with their backsplash, so it all feels connected.

Lizette Candela | GC Flooring

We are installing accent walls in mudrooms, bar areas, butler’s pantries, powder rooms and indoor/outdoor kitchens. Adding tile to the face of the kitchen island is a place that used to be popular for accent tiles, and is coming back.

What finishes are trending now?

Antonio Sorhegui | Ruben Sorhegui Design

The handmade look is a big one—that artisan, bespoke vibe really catches the eye. Polished finishes are always popular; they have a classic, timeless aesthetic that holds up over the years.

Mario Valle | PBS Contractors

Using the countertop material and bringing it up the wall as a backsplash is popular right now. It minimizes grout and simplifies cleaning, plus it’s a nice aesthetic. Most people realize they’re already paying for the full slab and can use the remnants for their backsplash, so it can become more cost-effective, too.

Loretta DeMarco | DeMarco Tile

Large-format tiles are trending a bit—especially the three-dimensional and textured aesthetics. We have a popular “fabric look” line that is three-dimensional looking, but flat to the touch, so you get the aesthetic and illusion of texture, with an easy-to-clean, smooth surface.

Lizette Candela | GC Flooring

Porcelain and large-format tiles seem to be popular lately. There is a trend toward large-format tiles for shower floors, instead of the small mosaics that have forever been the standard.

Please share your thoughts on rainbow terrazzo, rustic stonework and antique tiles. Antonio Sorhegui | Ruben Sorhegui Design

We haven’t worked much with rainbow terrazzo, but we are seeing a lot more terrazzo in general, particularly at the exterior. The organic quality it brings to the design is unique, and it’s nice to see it used in locations other than just the fireplace. When it comes to antiqued tiles, this is really popular, with glass tiles in particular.

Loretta DeMarco | DeMarco Tile

We haven’t had a lot of requests for the rainbow colors in terrazzo, but terrazzo is coming back, with people asking for the terrazzo look. There are a lot of options we’re using to get that natural look without the maintenance of natural stone. There’s also a line of small, hand-molded tiles that are gaining interest for accents in backsplashes or decorative walls.

Lizette Candela | GC Flooring

Rainbow terrazzo is a lot of fun and can elevate spaces in the home where clients want to be a bit more creative. The laundry room, mudroom and even playroom are great places to integrate fun tiles. Rustic stonework is great for bringing in natural elements,

Design + Decor 29
Ruben Sorhegui Design Fuse Specialty Appliances Miele

and we’ve noticed a lot more in exterior accent walls, too. As for antiqued tiles, detailed, colorful ceramic tiles add a cultural feel and an artistic touch to any home. With all the patterns, colors and options, they are a unique solution.

Appliances

What are the latest, most popular trends in kitchen design and gadgets?

Kim Schiller | Fuse Specialty Appliances

We’re seeing a lot of manufacturers introducing colors and metal finishes for accents to their knobs, handles and hardware. The brass accents tend to be most popular right now, alongside custom colors, which allow the kitchen or bar space to stand out within the home design.

Mario Valle | PBS Contractors

The interplay of cabinetry and appliances is more important than ever. Open concept living means that they need to be equally utilitarian and elegant in their approach. Manufacturers are keeping up with this by offering a better array of built-in options, where the panels are seamless with the cabinets.

John Whitman | JMDG Architecture

Color is big in kitchen design—not just in cabinetry, but in appliances, too. Appliance manufacturers are giving homeowners options beyond black, white and stainless steel in response. The range hood has become a designer’s playground: La Cornue, for example, offers a range hood that can be wrapped in genuine leather; it’s a showstopper and a feature in the kitchen. We’re also seeing a lot of beverage stations—whether it’s for coffee, smoothies or wine—creating a personalized beverage experience that fits the homeowner’s lifestyle.

Scott Mullet | Mullet’s Appliances

The design that is being integrated is one of the most popular things right

now. GE Café introduced matte white and matte black a few years ago, but it’s caught on, and other brands are following suit. The accents, like brass handles and knobs are also big. They add a touch of elegance.

Shae Wilder | BlueStar

People are interested in mixing metals on their appliances, and bringing in both color and nature—green is the new blue in kitchens. Green with Envy was BlueStar’s color of the year in 2022, and it’s not losing momentum. BlueStar’s first-ever color collection, Alison Victoria x BlueStar, includes 10 versions of green that are highly specified. We’re also seeing curving and radiused edges coming back, as well as dark and moody colors, like black green, black blue and black brown, just to name a few.

What is the latest in beverage stations?

Kim Schiller | Fuse Specialty Appliances

Two things really stand out: first is the Zip Water system, which is installed near the main faucet or bar sink. It provides instant cold, hot or sparkling water from one tap—an ultimate convenience. The second is beverage dispensers. Most people assume they’re just for beer, but the accessories allow us to use them for wine and cold brew coffee, too. These two units together give an amazing blend of drinks available for the homeowners’ family and friends.

John Whitman | JMDG Architecture

The Zip system has everyone’s attention right now. It offers boiling water, chilled water and even sparkling water out of a single tap.

Scott Mullet | Mullet’s Appliances

Coffee and water stations are still the most popular that we see. There are a

30 www.dd-mag.com
DeMarco Tile

few brands in the undercounter refrigeration market that are changing the game for designing small beverage stations in the home. Perlick has a great undercounter refrigerator with a beer tap that can be converted to serve cold brew coffee; others have models that are half keg with a tap, and half wine or beverage storage. It’s really innovative.

What is the leading manufacturer for appliances with app connectivity? What features do you look for?

Kim Schiller | Fuse Specialty Appliances

BSH has great connectivity with its appliances—including Thermador and Gaggenau. The induction cooktops have a connection option from your phone to a small accessory that connects to your pan on the cooktop. This allows the pan to talk to the cooktop and essentially cook for you, even adjusting the temperature. All of the company’s appliances connect to its app—from the oven to the dishwasher and refrigerator.

Mario Valle | PBS Contractors

We’ve found that one of the best aspects of the app connectivity is that manufacturers can use it to remotely diagnose and address any issues. Bosch, Thermador and Miele all offer products with this feature.

John Whitman | JMDG Architecture

We’re not seeing a lot of it, but for those who go in that direction, homeowners are wanting a “simple remote,” not a complicated interface.

Scott Mullet | Mullet’s Appliances

Almost every brand has a product line that offers app connectivity. At this point in time, GE is really excelling. The appliances aren’t just connected to the app for convenience, they are connected on the service side. The technicians can diagnose, upgrade and even reset a part of the appliance remotely. Instead of going in and replacing a control panel, they can often reset it remotely, and it solves the issue.

Besides the kitchen, where else do you see clients using multifunction tap faucets?

Kim Schiller | Fuse Specialty Appliances

Multifunction tap faucets are popular beyond the kitchen, particularly in wet-bar or back-pantry spaces. The instant hot is amazing when used for a cleaning tool for those tough, dried-on foods, and for making morning tea or oatmeal. They are popular in the bar because they minimize the need for all the bottles of sparkling water or fresh, filtered cold water—it’s all at your fingertips!

PRETTY IN PINK

A modernist house in Miami has a feminine charm. Story by Meryl Siegman | Photography by Brett Hufziger

Don’t be fooled when you pass the driveway to this house overlooking Biscayne Bay in South Florida. From the street, the home appears quite unassuming, resembling a modern bungalow at first glance. In fact, there was a modest single-story cottage on the property when the current owners purchased it 10 years ago. But step inside today, and the sheer beauty and grandeur of this three-story, 6,000-square-foot home with stunning panoramic views will take your breath away.

The Perfect Choice of Interior Design Firm

It wasn’t long after purchasing the property that the new owners decided to replace the original house with a four-bedroom home that would bring their wildest dreams to life. They selected MS2 Design Studio, a design firm that Pacheco Architecture had worked with on many projects in the past.

Originally founded in 1998 in New York City by principal Michael Scigliano and named after his adored grandfather (“MS1”), the full-service interior design firm opened its offices in Miami in 2002. It specializes in high-end residential design that includes project management, built-in cabinetry, innovative furniture design, lighting systems, and wall and floor coverings. The firm offers comprehensive white-glove service, from design conception to final styling, handling every detail along the way, down to the fresh flowers, lit candles and perfectly made beds. MS2 couldn’t have been a better choice for the owners, who were thrilled to put their complete trust in Michael and

Design + Decor 35

let him take the reins.

“These clients were an absolute dream to work with,” Michael says. “During the four years this project went on for, they remained easygoing and lighthearted while trusting our firm with the entire process.” MS2 was brought on board at the very beginning of the project. Already familiar with the architect and the contractor, Entek Construction and Michael were pleased to join the team. “I’ve been in the industry since 1995, and have never had so much fun working on a project,” he says. “We started when the original house was still standing. We worked closely with the team to execute the clients’ desires, doing the space planning and interior architecture, including the pool area, floors, glass, finishes—just about everything.”

Feminine and Fashion-Forward

“From the beginning, the clients gave us carte blanche to do what we thought best; we had a lot of leeway,” Michael continues. Working with photos provided by the owners to represent their desired look and feel, Michael put his signature touch on every aspect of the design to create something truly exceptional and special. The comprehensive work included every single detail that went into the house, from archi-

tectural design to the selection of furniture, accessories and finishes.

To complement the home’s modernist architecture, clean lines and expanses of glass, Michael designed open closets and incorporated light wood accented with darker features, finished with a distinctly feminine look highlighted by shades of pink.

“The clients love fashion, and their home needed to reflect that in subtle but prominent ways,” Michael explains. The design team selected colors and textures influenced by haute couture, such as velvet, mohair and leather. Hermès throws, buttery lambskin and hair-on cowhides by Kyle Bunting are on full display. Another element of the design concept was sparked by the clients’ love of jewelry, resulting in a selection of finishes and fixtures that evoke sparkling gemstones and dazzling bijouterie.

A Stroll through the Space

Once inside, you are greeted by a sweeping staircase, soaring windows and a curved second-story balcony, all accented with shimmering metallic finishes. The four bronze pendants from Holly Hunt suspended from the high ceiling remind you of bangles, reflecting the jewelry

gray leather. The champagne sink at the end of the island is testament to the owners’ love of entertaining.

Take a peek into the master bedroom, and you’ll make note of the distinct feminine and fashion-forward accents that run through the home: the faux-fur throw pillows, lush velvets on the chaise lounges and bed, and buckle-shaped Paul Mathieu pendants with a burnt orange leather topstitch strap detail. The fanciful boutique-style, glass-enclosed cabinet handbag display in the wife’s closet will induce a smile. Custom Creations

To add to the home’s fabulously unique design, Michael brought in items from Europe, such as the hand-carved natural alabaster Oslo chandeliers over the dining table, by Parisian designer Atelier Alain Ellouz, and the Vladimir Kagan swivel Wyswiyg chairs in the living room. He also commissioned items made by hand specifically for the space. “A big part of what we do is create a story behind what is inside the house,” he explains.

An example of this is the polished bronze coffee table base within the hand-carved walnut Vessel table by Caste, in front of the fireplace. “This is last piece we purchased for the project,” Michael says. “It’s more of a piece of sculpture than a coffee table. The pieces this company creates are unique and sophisticated.” Another custom element is the handmade couture Vahallen wallpaper that was chosen for the headboard wall in the guest bedroom, the elevator, the cabana and the master suite. “We actually sent the clients a video of how the wallpaper is made,” says Michael. “It is consistent with what we love to do—give our clients a story, something that they can talk about.”

Before exploring the cabana and pool area, you’ll want to check out the third-floor rooftop. Exit the elevator and you’ll be wowed by the 360-degree view, with Downtown Miami visible in the distance, as well as Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the islands dotting Miami Beach.

Back downstairs, you’ll enter the cabana bedroom, about which Michael says, “The pink pillows from Morada in the cabana bedroom set the tone for the entire house.” Outside is a sunken pool with an integrated hot tub and jacuzzi. All the outdoor furniture, with the exception of the dining table, is from Brown Jordan. Even from ground level, you can take in the sweeping views of Miami.

In its transition from a simple bungalow to a breathtaking, three-story getaway, this Miami modernist house on Biscayne Bay represents a magical incarnation, infused with feminine charm and adorned with jewel-like accents. From the grand entryway to the playful pink accents, every room evokes elegance and flair, leaving everyone who steps inside utterly enchanted.

The Designated Kitchen

Kitchen design evolves, trends come and go, and technology advances in products like appliances. Each year we like to tap our kitchen designers, interior designers and architects to see what lies ahead in design and products for the next year.

SHERIE WEIDNER CLIVE DANIEL HOME

Acclaimed interior designer Sherie Weidner enjoyed a thriving career in Chicago, Dallas and Naples, FL, before providing her expertise to the lead design team at Clive Daniel Home. A graduate of Michigan State University in East Lansing and DePaul University in Chicago, Sherie is a sought-after designer due to her consistent production of fine luxury work. A true professional and master of interior design, Sherie offers a wealth of design knowledge and brings a deep appreciation of culture and the arts to her clients. She travels to perfect her craft and gain inspiration and creativity for her design projects; recently, she toured the beautiful castles in Spain.

Here, Sherie shares an outstanding home she designed with builder Curtis Gunther of Imperial Homes of Naples. Curtis and Sherie have a history of awardwinning collaborations. This 5,076-square-foot California Chic home in Bonita Bay is just as luxuriously detailed and warmly personalized as their previous works of refined construction and beautifully

innovative home design.

Sherie leads us through the substantial gourmet kitchen that hearkens back to mid-century modern with stirring Japandi inspiration. “Japandi” refers to a style that combines warm and clean Scandinavian aesthetics with the grace and sophistication of Japanese designs. The results are invitingly calm, fresh and uncluttered, allowing uncomplicated elegance to take center stage.

This kitchen is also wonderfully customized to serve as the ultimate culinary sanctuary for the enthusiastic home chefs. “Every kitchen needs to be designed for the people who will be living there,” Sherie says. “It’s all about the end users. If they need a butler’s pantry or double dishwasher because they entertain a lot, it needs to be personal to them. Do they want a feeding station for their dog? Do they want dual-prep islands? Would they like a place to sit and eat in the kitchen? The designated kitchen is truly the end user’s wish list.”

As a top interior designer with Clive Daniel Home, Sherie thoughtfully considers her clients’ particular wants and needs and how they live in their space. She personalized this kitchen in unique and exciting ways by listening closely to the homeowners and then drawing from her extensive professional experience and creativity. The stunning results offer a perfect balance of elements and color—a signature of Sherie’s design talents.

50 www.dd-mag.com

Culinary comfort and space were seen as top priorities during the design process. Since the homeowners enjoy cooking, the kitchen features two generous islands. Sherie and the homeowners didn’t just settle for the typical two-tone cabinetry; they selected three beautiful colors for the cabinets: soft white, warm green and rich walnut. “I chose Cosentino’s Silestone in Ethereal Glow for the kitchen’s countertop surface due to its subtle movement, white background and occasional umber shading,” says Sherie. She knew the color would serve as a subtle backdrop and an ultraclean contrast with the earthy, organic-inspired mahogany cabinetry.

Another way Sherie thoughtfully infused creativity and functionality to this space was by adding a solid walnut strip off the second prep island—the perfect place for dining-height seating. “I think that’s really gorgeous,” says Sherie. The leather seats at the island are wonderfully spill-friendly though still luxurious.

Beautiful yet highly functional, this gourmet kitchen seamlessly houses a Sub-Zero refrigerator, freezer and wine storage tower with beverage drawers. Two Bosch dishwashers and a Wolf eight-burner range offer additional culinary delights to the busy homeowners who enjoy entertaining.

How did Sherie incorporate mixed material and fixtures to provide a unique look for this mid-century Japandi kitchen? The gold and black hardware adds soft contrast to the fine cabinetry, and the long, slender contemporary LED lights are highly functional, with the ability to dim or brighten the space.

One of the kitchen islands has a welcoming nook for the beloved family dog—a dedicated feeding station complete with its own water tap to make fresh water as accessible as possible. Sherie and Curtis have certainly thought of everything, as the dog’s water tap has a nearby valve for a simple shutoff, should curious toddlers be visiting. Indeed, interior designer Sherie Weidner and builder Curtis Gunther have succeeded in meeting their clients’ needs and going above and beyond aesthetic expectations with this elegant California Chic kitchen.

KRISTIN LYONS

KDL INTERIOR DESIGN

When it comes to luxury reimagined, Kristin Lyons and her successful company, KDL Interior Design, are on the short list of leading South Florida design firms, with hundreds of incredible upscale projects completed to perfection. Originally from Fort Myers, Kristin has always had a keen interest in art, design and creativity. KDL Interior Design’s portfolio includes beautiful and luxurious residential and commercial properties, with the firm specializing in expert management of all large-budget design projects. Kristin and the elite KDL team pride themselves on executing each project with efficiency and the utmost attention to detail, as we can see in these four spectacular kitchens that Kristin shares with us.

These extraordinary kitchens include the Crisp Modern Elegance kitchen that’s clean in its fine design details, with a little modern industrial feel for maximum visual interest. The second showstopper kitchen, the Sanibel Coastal, has a smaller footprint, yet feels wonderfully welcoming with fresh whites and a sophisticated balance of navy chairs and charming navy lantern lighting. The third spectacular kitchen—with its Organic, Soft Bronze tones, sandy-colored walls and a natural woven shade on the kitchen window—evokes a soothing atmosphere while elegantly reminding you that the beach is nearby. The fourth kitchen beauty is a Coastal Modern Sophisticated space, with a gorgeous dolomite island and backsplash so magnificent that they are exquisite standalone art pieces in themselves.

Kristin is the ultimate professional in South Florida interior design,

with hundreds of delighted clients across the coast enjoying the personalized spaces she has designed for them. When asked to divulge some of her secrets to creating a truly designated kitchen, Kristin says it’s all about the client. “Making the kitchen function perfectly for the client is the most important aspect,” she says. “Are they chefs, or are they using the kitchen mostly for entertaining? Do they need a butler’s pantry? It’s all about making the kitchen optimally functional, and cleverly disguising the function, because it’s so beautiful.”

Kitchens are beloved gathering spaces that dutifully meet our culinary and entertainment needs. We asked Kristin how she ensures that no inch is left behind when designing a dream kitchen for her clients. “The first kitchen, the Crisp Modern Elegance kitchen, isn’t very large but was designed with ample storage,” she says. Indeed, with its large, picturesque windows, this kitchen exudes grace while being a storage wonder. “The ceiling is very high, and this kitchen has lots of elegance, with generous hidden space for all kitchen essentials,” she continues. “The large island houses lots of storage on both sides. Everything within the cabinetry is thoroughly planned out with rollouts and dividers. To the left and right of the cooktop are spice nooks and utensil storage where the client needed them most.”

Which of these kitchens required the most creativity when drawing up the designs? “The Sanibel Coastal, with the navy-blue chairs and navy lighting over the island,” she replies. “It’s a smaller area, so we concentrated on the storage and pantry. This family has three children and a very busy lifestyle. They wanted everything to be easily

Design + Decor 53

accessible to all of them, yet look beautiful at the same time. The complete pantry even houses their wine storage. The homeowners love cooking, so for convenience we included a pot filler above the range, double ovens and a coffee nook neatly hidden away. We seamlessly designed it so all these things don’t take over the space.”

What are Kristin’s thoughts about the kitchen work triangle? “It’s okay to put aside the triangle if it works better for the client’s workflow,” she says. “The third kitchen, the Organic, Soft Bronze, is a great example of reimagining the kitchen triangle to suit the needs of the client. Your sink doesn’t necessarily have to line up with your range. If it turns out you need more space on your kitchen island, we can change the placement of the sink so you have this nice open island to work on. This client wanted the island for enjoying company.”

As we can see from these kitchens, Kristin has a gift for creating a luxurious look using a mixture of superb materials. In the Sanibel Coastal kitchen, “the colors on the dolomite backsplash and countertop are very neutral, but in person you can see whites and creams—it’s like a piece of art,” she says. “The hardware has a very soft gold, pulled from the backsplash and countertop. The floor is a lovely white oak, cut in large planks, and it’s just beautiful.”

Indeed, all of Kristin and KDL Interior Design’s kitchens have her signature note of exquisite refinement. Her thriving business consists of new clients who have heard glowing reviews of her elegant work, and repeat clients who would trust their special homes to no one else. Once clients experience the wonders that Kristin creates, they know they have a designer for life.

L. A. DERIGGI HUDSON PARK INTERIOR DESIGN

Celebrated designer L.A. DeRiggi has won many honors and much critical acclaim since opening his interior design studio, Hudson Park Interior Design, in Naples, FL. But L.A.’s exciting career has only just begun. L.A. was selected in 2023 for the Gulfshore Business “40 Under 40” exclusive list, which spotlights young business leaders who have also made important contributions to their communities. L.A. is known for transforming everyday spaces into livable works of extraordinary art and immaculate fine design. What sets him apart is his humble approach to the design craft he loves. He believes that achieving effective interior design is a personal and intimate service, which means getting to know his client’s lifestyle.

For a design project to be successful and well executed, a designer needs to understand how each client uses the space and then apply the “form follows function” approach. Here, L.A. shows us an inspired and sophisticated beach-town kitchen design that flawlessly marries contemporary practicality with vintage charm. The kitchen is beautiful in its simplicity and exquisite in its functionality—a departure from the typical coastal home aesthetic. “Naples is a coastal town, and we wanted to reflect that lifestyle,” L.A. explains, “but we added a timeless cosmopolitan feel to the design, to best represent the client’s taste.”

We asked L.A. to share his thoughts on what a designated kitchen means to him. “I see it as the epicenter of inspiration and indulgence, where every detail elevates the act of cooking to an art form. It’s a

space that seamlessly blends top-tier functionality with sophisticated aesthetics—think chef-grade appliances and sleek countertops, set amid a layout that celebrates an elegant yet practical flow.” Indeed, this kitchen is a gourmet dream and optimally functional, with each area thoughtfully considered.

Every homeowner uses his or her kitchen slightly differently. How does L.A. design a kitchen space that perfectly fits the needs of each unique client? “Designing a kitchen goes beyond creating a visually appealing space,” he says. “It’s about sculpting an area that anticipates and fulfills the client’s every need. At the heart of my design philosophy is a commitment to functionality tailored to the unique patterns of the homeowner.

“Whether my client is a culinary novice or a seasoned chef, I consider everything, from their workflow—be it left to right or vice versa— to the very kitchen items they need,” he continues. “Every cabinet is designated to make room for their lifestyle. Large appliances don’t just fit—they belong where they serve them best. This personalized approach ensures that the kitchen isn’t just a backdrop, but a vibrant, coherent part of how the homeowners experience and enjoy their home. The goal is to forge an inviting and efficient hub, curated to the rhythm of their daily life.”

With its daring black snack top on the island and eye-catching marble and limestone backsplash, this kitchen brings bold excitement and unmatched elegance to the sophisticated space. Far from being predictable or boring, these visionary color choices invite the guest

Design + Decor 57

to cozy up and stay a while. L.A. shares his thoughts on breaking the rules of kitchen design. “The credo ‘form follows function’ remains sacrosanct—preserving the synergy between aesthetics and practicality,” he says. “For me, the very idea of rule-breaking is less about defiance and more about innovative adherence to this fundamental design truth. Accentuating with bold hues or creating dynamic focal points does not breach the realm of functionality but enhances it.”

L.A. always honors the client’s needs and personality when creating a kitchen. “In one of our most recent projects,” he recalls, “we rejected the traditional layout in favor of a more dynamic, zone-based design that truly reflects the homeowner’s culinary passion. By incorporating three contiguous islands, each designated for a specific task— preparation, table setting and preservation—we crafted a culinary environment that encourages seamless co-cooking experiences.” In many homes, it is rare for only one person to be working in the kitchen. In this case, L.A. beautifully accommodated a side-by-side work experience.

“The incorporation of high-end appliances—such as a La Cornue range for the dedicated cooking station, dual refrigeration systems, and a built-in, undercounter beverage center—raises the bar for modern kitchen functionality,” he says. “Additional specially curated features included integrated coffee machines and a vacuum sealing drawer, demonstrating our commitment to merging sophisticated design with the practical necessities of life. Our aim was to create a space where form meets function, allowing for an elegant fluidity

58 www.dd-mag.com

between cooking, entertaining and living—a design ethos that resonates deeply with Hudson Park Interior Design.”

L.A. is a proponent of the art of leaving no inch behind—utilizing every space in the kitchen to make sure there is a place for everything that should be hidden. “With each project, I take a detailed inventory of what’s essential now, and I also anticipate future needs and desires.” Understanding the homeowners’ current and future needs is one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets for delighting his clients.

The maximization of efficiency and aesthetics is foremost in L.A.’s designs. “Integrating innovative storage solutions and space-saving techniques, we ensure that even the coziest kitchen becomes a bastion of functionality, without sacrificing that touch of sophistication,” he says. “Our commitment is to a design that serves as an inviting canvas for life’s daily routines and special moments, woven together with the threads of personal taste and practicality, culminating in a space that feels both timeless and intimately personal.”

Spirited in its glamorous eye-catching color palette, this kitchen comes together beautifully with a delicately selected mix of vintage materials. “By artfully merging contemporary with vintage elements, my approach ensures that every kitchen becomes more than just a functional space—it evolves into a symbol of sophisticated, timeless

design,” says L.A. “Mixing timeless materials like natural stone, rich woods and elegant marble is key. These materials don’t just echo the aesthetics of bygone eras; they also meet the demands of modern utility, embodying a sophisticated design ethos that stands the test of time.”

As illustrated by this contemporary chic kitchen, L.A. and his firm, Hudson Park Interior Design, know how to create a mood that is timeless and unforgettable. Incidentally, the name of the company was inspired by L.A.’s two companions, Parker and Hudson— Miniature Australian Shepherd brothers who are bursting with personality. Originally from Pittsburgh, L.A. DeRiggi has found Naples to be a warm and welcoming place, an ideal location from which to create stunning luxury spaces for both residential and commercial clients.

TINA MARGRANDER

TINA MARIE INTERIORS

Celebrated interior designer Tina Margrander is an accomplished professional who thrives under pressure and succeeds in creating spectacular designs for every client, every time. Just as remarkable as the graceful interiors she produces is her ability to resourcefully collaborate with top architects and leading contractors throughout South Florida. Tina’s outstanding organization skills and dedicated work ethic ensure superior workflow for all parties involved, resulting in the inviting, magazine-worthy interiors that have become her signature.

Tina started her design firm, Tina Marie Interiors, after she graduated cum laude from the University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning with a bachelor of design in 2003. Here, she shares one of her fabulous creations: a warm and welcoming kitchen that touches on modern while anchored with fresh transitional brilliance and a murmur of clean midcentury.

After admiring the beautiful design projects of Tina Marie Interiors, the homeowners connected with Tina and trusted her completely to work on this ground-up construction. The clients had a detailed wish list of what they wanted in their

kitchen and, thanks to Tina’s expertise, the final result is creative, luxurious, highly functional and tailored perfectly to the family. Tina took the time to understand the homeowners’ lifestyle, which enabled her to make the home stunning, completely authentic and personalized. With its amazing vistas, the space is ready to serve a fun-filled gathering, yet keeps all bulky appliances out of sight. How does she ensure maximum storage while maintaining a fresh, clutter-free and organized aesthetic? “You have to have a lot of hidden storage,” Tina says.

“It’s a big house,” Tina continues. “The client has a big family and wanted to make sure there was enough room for everyone. It required fine-tuning with the architect, meetings with the builder and all the different tradespeople, and documenting all the specific selections. It really helped for all of us to be looking at the plans at the same time, because we were able to offer suggestions and make recommendations,” she says, explaining how the project became a remarkable showstopper home in less than two years. “Finding a balance of functionality and beauty was important. The kitchen is a central space that the family likes to enjoy; it’s probably filled with so much love when everyone is around.”

Indeed, this is a fine kitchen to appreciate and love. Tina and

62 www.dd-mag.com

the hardworking team labored to engineer the cooking station so the exhaust hood floats perfectly above the window, while maintaining the unobstructed view. The client wanted to enjoy cooking and seeing the spectacular beach views at the same time.

Bravely breaking design rules, the team oriented the sink not at the large picture window, but rather at the inviting island. The sink at the island features two faucets for ultimate usability, enabling two people to work side by side while washing or prepping. The generous island is also a storage masterpiece, with ample room for the large family to store both kitchen essentials and holiday decor.

The mixed-material kitchen is attractive and functional. The combination of warm wood and soft white, the graceful glass pendants hanging above the island, and the translucent chair backings keep the space wonderfully light and sophisticated.

“The client wanted a mix of materials, but not too modern or heavy and traditional looking,” says Tina, explaining how she created this classic look that expresses so much personality.

“We tried to find elements that brought all those finishes together. We mixed the cabinet hardware—some are a matte black finish, some are satin brass. It’s the same profile, but two different colors to bring out the cabinet colors.”

The kitchen came together magnificently and is truly a work of art. Tina’s 20 years of design experience and commitment to treat everyone on the jobsite with respect and kindness make her a favorite with both collaborators and clients. The client’s budget and deadline are the first priorities for Tina Marie Interiors, which is always undertaking exciting projects, including new construction or compete remodels. Check out the firm’s website to see the team’s rich portfolio of wonderfully styled interiors that are perfectly tailored to suit each client.

AUDREY L HEALEY EBL INTERIORS & CONSTRUCTION

Interior designer Audrey Healey is a rare jewel in the interior design world. Her function-first approach pays homage to the often-misconceived practice of interior design. EBL Interiors & Construction of Naples, FL, is fortunate to have made her a team member more than six years ago, and the firm has been creating bespoke interior spaces for its clients ever since.

Audrey’s interest in interior design began when she was a child. She recalls her first taste of the profession at age nine, when her grandparents enlisted the help of an interior designer for their Indianapolis home. “I am still inspired by that home today,” Audrey warmly recounts. “My grandparents also instilled in me an appreciation for art. Their art collection intrigued me from a young age. I am grateful to them for fueling my passion for interior design.”

As the years went by, Audrey’s love for interior design strengthened. She attended Indiana University, where she studied interior design and completed an interdisciplinary liberal arts and management training program. She later went on to earn her NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) certification, making her an invaluable member of the EBL team. Today, she enjoys the technical side of interior design, including functional analysis and creatively reinventing spaces to better suit the needs of her clients.

Audrey shares with us a renovation that began with her usual function-first approach but, unlike previous projects, was for the benefit of clients close to

her heart: her grandparents. “It was a full-circle moment for me,” she says. For Audrey, this kitchen is much more than its warm and contemporary aesthetic.

“The most important component of kitchen design is functionality,” Audrey explains, discussing her approach. “This kitchen was no different. I began by meticulously surveying the use of my grandparents’ existing kitchen. How was the space organized? What could be improved upon? How will this kitchen live? Designers often forgo this step, assuming they know best. But I’ve learned to never assume—even with my own grandparents! This careful calculation paved the way for a successful kitchen.”

Next, Audrey reworked the space plan in the condo to ensure that the kitchen would reach its full potential. “This took some convincing,” she says, laughing. “I can remember standing with my grandparents in their demolished unit, taping out the future details to help them better visualize. We stood at the future kitchen sink, and I said, ‘Look left, now look straight, now look right. You will have three water views from this vantage point.’” These views, she explains, were not visible in the previous configuration.

Condo renovations can be limiting in many ways,” she continues. “You are working within permanent boundaries—the building envelope, existing plumbing locations, columns, etc. It’s a beautiful thing when you find a way to optimize those limitations.” She identified the cladded focal point of the space as one of those limitations. “At first I was disappointed at having to

Design + Decor 65

work around this column,” she says.” I was worried it would be an eyesore until I found a way to optimize. What was at first a disappointment instead provided a concealed home for the ovens and an additional storage opportunity. It also furnished a visual boundary, drawing a line between the foyer and the kitchen, and creating a warm welcome for family and friends alike.”

When asked about the aesthetic selections made in this kitchen, Audrey explains that her grandparents were not looking for a traditional beach vibe. “I wanted to design a space that allowed my grandparents’ art collection to be the main character,” she says. “With that goal in mind, we stayed neutral in the hard-surface selections, allowing for small doses of color in the soft-surface selections. These small doses of color, such as the mustard-yellow barstools, play nicely with the artwork throughout the unit. The result is a warm, contemporary space.”

Though Audrey approached this project as she does others, the experience was unparalleled. She says she will forever cherish the memories she made with her grandparents during the project. She is grateful to have had the opportunity to do what she loves with those she loves most. Indeed, this warm, contemporary condo created by the EBL team and designer Audrey Healey is an excellent example of what this creative crew can accomplish.

LYNDSEY DAVIS NICKLAS

L DESIGN STUDIO

The successful interior design company L Design Studio is proud to be owned and operated by women. Led by awardwinning designer Lyndsey Davis Nicklas, the firm is celebrated both locally and nationally for creating exquisite spaces for its luxury clientele. Lyndsey’s impressive portfolio showcases an assortment of stunning design styles that have delighted clients over the years. A specialty service of L Design Studio is the exciting transformation of kitchens and bathrooms, which Lyndsey and her team colorfully illustrate for their clients using a state-of-the-art 3D rendering program. Clients can take a virtual tour of their newly designed home before on-site production even begins.

Design + Decor spoke with Lyndsey about a stylish, organic, modern kitchen that her firm

Design + Decor 69

recently designed. Lyndsey and her team crafted every inch of this space, which has a slightly smaller footprint than most kitchens. It perfectly demonstrates the magic a top designer can bring, intelligently maximizing a space to be both functional and picturesque, while being uniquely tailored it to the needs of the client. “As designers, we learn about the work triangle, but designing a kitchen has become so much more,” says Lyndsey. “It’s less about a specific triangle and more tailored. We ask, ‘How does this client use the kitchen?’ We ask about children and who in the home cooks. Do they like to bake? Do they entertain? We design kitchens that are multifunctional and can handle multiple people doing different things at the same time.”

Lyndsey tells us about the remarkable island in this sleek, modern kitchen. “The island design is one of my all-time favorites,” she says. “It’s clad almost entirely of stone. It took multiple stone slabs, and we worked with a very meticulous stone fabricator to create it. We aimed for the look of a seamless block, with the sections appearing to be cut out for the sitting area and the cabinetry. The mitered edge countertop took eight pieces of stone, fused together perfectly.” A mitered edge countertop refers to a continuous, 90-degree edge that joins the vertical counter and a horizontal stone surface, boosting the beauty of the countertop material.

The delightful, eclectic blend of this kitchen is modern, yet warm. Lyndsey walks us through some of the materials selected to create this look. “Matte black is layered into the light fixture; it ties in with the custom-made metalframed cabinets at the bar,” she says. “The fun, large-statement light fixtures over the island help pull everything together, with the brass tones and warmer wood tones in the kitchen.”

Though vital to the construction process, blueprints can be challenging for clients to read and do little to inspire wonder and excitement. So—whether the team is working on new construction, an addition or a renovation—L Design uses “Chief Architect,” 3D architectural software, to bring ideas to life for its clients. The software offers a full-color, detailed walk-through of the newly designed space with vivid details, helping homeowners become part of the process. “We can modify the design in real time with the client,” says Lyndsey. “We can move, change and adjust things to provide a lifelike visual.” Indeed, the software visual tour rivals the final reveal, showing stunning reallife details, such as a soft glow off the hardware or beautiful veining in the marble countertop.

This incredible kitchen space is a genuine balance of the finest natural materials and warm, inviting modern aesthetics, all thoughtfully executed while maximizing the space. A full-service interior design firm, L Design Studio works with residential and commercial clients on new construction projects, renovations, restorations and remodels.

WRIGHT INTERIOR
NAN WRIGHT
GROUP

Nan Wright is the principal designer and CEO of the acclaimed Southwest Florida firm, Wright Interior Group. The company is known for creating sumptuous living spaces made to perform and function perfectly for its residential clients. A design graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Nan has magnificently transformed numerous homes across the sunny south coast with her design vision and mastery of upscale renovations and new home construction over the past 20-plus years.

In addition to her intuitive understanding of fine art and detailed design, Nan brings a substantial business background to her firm. Her experience with large-budget projects ensures she will expertly manage the finances and timelines for her spectacularly designed and uniquely tailored homes.

Nan’s career began with designing and creating for her own home, refinishing furniture and reimagining window treatments. She enjoys hands-on involvement and collaborating with her clients to create a timelessly beautiful home. Here, Nan shows us a stunning light and bright Coastal Modern kitchen that she designed with Wright Interior Group’s design director, the talented Caitlin Heath.

“Our client likes to cook and wanted a place for casual dining in the kitchen,” explains Nan of this amazing renovation. “It started with the planning of the large island, which provides seating for six to eight. We custom created the island in rich navy blue with gold bands, and repeated the gold bands in the hood over the range. These gold bands were created by a local metal artisan, right here in Naples. The client also wanted a footrail for the comfort of guests, as you see at some restaurants and bars. The island is

T-shaped with a natural quartzite stone, which is book-matched in several different places.”

Book-matching means the stone is skillfully fused together precisely to create a mirror image effect. This maximizes the dynamic visual impact and can provide a spectacular statement piece, as we see in this picturesque kitchen island. The surrounding counters are made of quartz to complete the fresh, airy look. Custom-built cabinets boost the sleek aesthetic and ensure the kitchen stays tidy with a thoroughly planned place for everything.

Nan created a U-shaped space rather than a traditional kitchen triangle to produce the functional, yet elegant kitchen this client desired. “It’s not a typical triangle because of the T-shaped island,” she says, “but the layout functions perfectly for the way our client prepares and cooks in the kitchen.” The hand-blown glass-globe lighting fixture appears to be floating above the magnificent island, suspended by a delicate gold chain.

Warm French oak floors add a pleasant cheer throughout the space. Typically featuring a deeper shade of amber, French oak can offer more warmth to a home compared to traditional American oak. Classic gray-and-white marble subway tiles adorn the backsplash behind the range, adding gorgeous visual interest.

Every inch of this kitchen was meticulously planned by Nan and Caitlin alongside their client, who provided a kitchen wish list. “This client was so sweet, wonderful and easy to work with,” says Nan. “We shared ideas back and forth.” While optimally organized, clean-looking and spacious, the kitchen conceals an incredible wealth of storage for both daily and

Design + Decor 73

seasonal items. A mixer and all other kitchen essentials are hidden away neatly. The space also features two dishwashers, which keep the kitchen humming after the entertainment has wrapped up. “These clients requested lots of storage, so we designed the kitchen to meet all their needs,” says Nan. “The frosted glass doors provide a walk-in pantry. Just around the corner is the coffee/beverage bar and breakfast nook.”

The comfortable breakfast nook features a custom-built table and lush banquette seating. A gaming table is just in front of the convenient coffee bar, allowing an ample number of guests to gather and enjoy the kitchen area. “I don’t think people have seen dining in their kitchen the way this kitchen was designed,” says Nan about the intimacy of this chic and cozy kitchen. “It’s more casual dining, which is the direction people are going. I don’t think Naples is a formal dining place anymore. This type of eating area in the kitchen is more comfortable; it’s more beach casual.” Indeed, Nan and Caitlin exceeded expectations with this luxurious Modern Coastal kitchen and home.

Where does Nan find design inspiration? She has a beloved home in Tuscany, Italy, which she visits throughout the year to recharge. This regular trip to Tuscany, with its breathtaking views and gentle rolling hills, keeps Nan refreshed, innovative and ready to create fantastic interiors for her Wright Interior Group clients.

K2 DESIGN GROUP JENNY PROVOST

Principal designer Jenny Provost and the K2 Design Group have assembled a winning team that specializes in expert custom home design, fine interior design and elevated kitchen and bath design. The talented K2 Design Group team is staffed by professionals who have a post-secondary education at a minimum—meaning they complete every project to the highest standards possible. Since its founding in 1994, K2 Design Group has won numerous accolades and awards for superior design.

K2 Design is at the forefront of design intelligence and is an authority on both commercial and residential project management. Keeping abreast of the finest advances in home design, Jenny Provost incorporates the best organizational products and specialty cookware from around the world in her projects. Here, she shows us a few stunning examples of the design artistry achieved by K2 Design Group.

Asked to share her thoughts on a designated kitchen, Jenny says, “While the kitchen is the heart of the home, it is also the most expensive room of any house. Often the epicenter of household activity, it also requires more attention to detail and sourcing than other spaces. Frankly, our kitchens have turned into living rooms. It’s where we make food, have deep family discus-

sions, catch up on email and, especially in our area, host cocktail parties! It’s a lot to ask of one room, but good kitchen designers, and the manufacturers of products that go into those kitchens, have met the challenge!”

Jenny and her team spend considerable time researching the very best in kitchen products, styles and advancements. She explains how she works to meet the needs of her clients. “Right out of the gate, I talk with my clients about what an intimate business we are in together,” she says. “I need to know details about their lifestyle, dining habits, cooking preferences and socialization habits. For some, it’s a lot to ask, but we get there. The more I know, the better I can make sure all their needs are met.”

Clients differ in their anxiety and stress levels when faced with personal questions, but with her years of experience, Jenny has learned to help clients relax in the discovery process. “Sometimes,” she says, “it’s just about knowing the right questions to ask and how to ask them—less prying, more putting at ease. It takes a while to get good at this technique, but it starts with genuinely caring about getting at the heart of what our customers need, which in turn becomes what they want.”

As Jenny thoughtfully considers the homeowners’ unique needs and how

Design + Decor 77

they live in their space, how does she feel about “breaking all the rules” in terms of kitchen design? “I wrote our company tagline 30 years ago,” she says, “and it is still the core of every design: ‘Fearless design for forwardthinking people.’ The only rule is there are no rules. Common sense must be employed, of course, such as keeping everything you need on a regular basis within easy reach. We design a lot of big kitchens, but I don’t want my clients to grow exhausted, running around for the essentials.”

Jenny’s many years of design experience has helped K2 Design Group win more accolades in a season than some firms earn in their existence— and translates into trust, innovation and confidence in their own designs. “Many years ago, I took a test given by a national kitchen and bath association,” Jenny recalls. “They asked how many wall cabinets there should be in a certain room size. I still can’t believe they would actually put that overly ambiguous question on a test. Depending on the design, there could be two or 10 or none! Most of the questions were canned and could be answered correctly only by memorizing their handouts. Needless to say, I flunked the test. Didn’t hurt much, as I’ve gone on to win international, national, regional and local awards for kitchen and bath design, including a Best Showroom design from that same organization! Break the rules—it’s okay! It’s the sound of something special happening!”

Bold and fearless, K2

hering closely to kitchen design rules, including the “kitchen triangle.” According to Jenny, “There is rarely the so-called perfect triangle. These days, in our area in particular, I’m more concerned about serving space, access to drinks and making sure hors d’oeuvre preparation is easy. My clients entertain in their kitchens and adjacent living areas, but that entertaining has turned into serving cocktails and nibbles rather than formal dinners. After cocktail hour, they head to the clubs or restaurants. It wouldn’t play well in many other places, but it’s a way of life in Southwest Florida.”

The K2 Design Group understands that way of life and can design the perfect home to suit that lifestyle. Jenny notes some of the more unusual client requests for kitchens. “Occasionally, I have clients with not so run-of-themill appliance choices that requires some creativity,” she says.” A hibachi is a wonderful appliance that augments the cooking area, and a pizza oven can be a monster that takes over the whole kitchen!”

What factors does Jenny consider in her discussions with clients? “There is the ‘resale’ talk,” she says. “A kitchen should last 20 years and, if well designed, even longer. Although I enjoy innovative design, it must be tempered with, ‘What happens if I have to or want to sell my house?’ It’s a challenge to design beautiful, creative and useful kitchens that look and perform great far into the future—then throw in an ambitious wish list with an unrealistic budget. Good kitchen designers are indispensable and worth every penny

Design Group creates kitchen wonders without ad-

because they earn their money!”

Jenny is also an expert in maximizing kitchen space. “Contractors have accused me of trying to use every inch of space, especially in renovations,” she says. “I’d love to know the quantity of extra square footage I’ve ‘found’ just by opening up service chases that were made three times larger than they needed to be, or ceilings that were dropped low in the event the air-conditioning guy might need the space. When I was very young, I designed interval ownership resort units, or ‘how to sleep six people in 400 square feet’! It was excellent training for a kitchen space planner.”

Jenny generously shares some tips she keeps in mind when creating award-winning kitchens. “Using smart and integrated appliances keeps the counters clear and uncluttered,” she says. “My two go-tos are Miele ranges and Miele coffee makers. The ranges do everything: convection, thermal, steam and microwave, eliminating the need for so many separate appliances. The coffee maker, in addition to making extraordinary coffee, builds into the cabinets seamlessly. I stay up on the latest functional cabinet accessories, but they must be sturdy and look great. I tend to use a high-end German brand. I find I can get more into the same space and in a more organized fashion with the help of the products at cleverstorage.com.”

K2 Design Group creates wonderfully clutter-free spaces that are both organized and visually spectacular. Jenny’s latest showroom is a fantastic example of achieving a beautiful look by mixing together materials and fixtures for a unique and enchanting aesthetic. “We’ve combined periods, finishes, textures and colors,” she says. “There are two-tone drawers that are walnut, with an iron-gray center panel with titanium-looking hardware. In the glass door cabinets, we used reeded glass—what’s old is new again! Our bourbon bar is smoky, with a Venetian mirrored backsplash. The island takes a turn towards ‘what’s now’ with channeled cabinets in rich, dark walnut. It was fun to design and is even more exciting to see in the showroom. You must come see it!”

A visit to the K2 Design Group showroom in Bonita Springs will inspire guests to touch and feel the latest in elevated luxury. Jenny knows how to serve every client, getting at the heart of what they need and bringing their wish list to life with an award-winning, refined design.

ADELYN CHARLES INTERIORS

THIES

ALEX

South Florida design company Adelyn Charles Interiors masterfully serves clients both nationally and internationally and continues to earn recognition, one delighted family at a time. The company’s lead designer, Alex Thies, grew up in a world immersed with fine art and design. When Alex was very young, her artist mother introduced her to broad and exciting aesthetic experiences, and her designer/builder father let Alex imagine and create 3D spaces using his AutoCAD design software program. Alex’s upbringing inspired her to earn a master’s degree in architecture.

A home designed by Alex is meticulously planned to the smallest detail—going above and beyond simple decor to become a distinguished, deeply intentional and stunning residence that’s perfectly matched to the client. Alex shares with us a recent project: an inviting elevated Modern Coastal kitchen with fresh white tones, rattan, inky blacks, warm wood and a soft glint of gold that mesmerizes the senses.

Design + Decor 81

The natural quartzite material of the kitchen’s island sets an artistic stage for guests to gather and enjoy the host’s hospitality. “I love that this quartzite brings a bit of a cooler tone to the house,” says Alex. “I really like to mix warm and cool tones. If you go all gray or all brown, the look can be flat and boring.” This dynamic kitchen space is far from dull, with the cool taupe island displaying dramatic veining and beautiful color variations that flow in a statement waterfall to the floor.

The attractive black backsplash tile tells its own story. Each tile was individually hand painted by a specialty craftsman and painstakingly arranged on the wall with careful consideration of the overall canvas, creating a visually appealing tile arrangement. Alex and the Adelyn Charles Interiors team worked to ensure perfection in this kitchen, and the results are simply outstanding, right down to each artisan tile, which is as unique as a fingerprint.

When asked her secret to achieving a refined coastal look that’s exquisitely sophisticated and elegant, Alex explains, “When a lot of people think of beach or coastal homes, they think everything has to be light and airy. We used a lot of dark elements in this space, but it still feels coastal—it still feels like you are on the beach; it doesn’t feel like a dark cave. Elements of dark accent give a rich boldness to the space without making the whole space feel so dark.”

This kitchen was designed uniquely “for a homeowner who loves to entertain,” Alex says. “The clients wanted this space to serve as a hangout area for their guests to be social and interactive, with seating on both sides of the island.” Alex made the homeowner’s wishes come true, creating a gor-

geous kitchen that is ideal for entertainment. A butler’s pantry cunningly hides another kitchen, where food prep and kitchen work can be done while keeping this main area neat and luxurious.

Our beloved kitchens are essential gathering places for family and friends to feel welcome and cherished. That feeling of joy and comfort is central to Alex’s designs. She and her team are masters at creating the exact look and feel desired by the homeowners, whether they use the kitchen primarily for entertaining, or are skilled home chefs, requiring the latest in French cooktops. Alex understands that the sharing and togetherness of a meal is essential for family bonding and happiness.

The owners of this Modern Coastal home are delighted by the kitchen that Alex and her dream team of professionals created for them. What sets Adelyn Charles Interiors apart is its commitment to beginning each project with poignant questions, showing thoughtful consideration to the functional details, and following up with beautiful finishing touches. The firm’s website showcases a lovely range of luxury residences, artfully designed by Alex and the Adelyn Charles Interiors team.

EDGE CABINERTY | INTERIOR DESIGN | CLOSETS

BELLE FORTTE KRYSTAL MATRISHION

EDGE knows how to tell a story masterfully through design, envisioning spaces as interactive works of art, not just as functional setups that meet domestic needs. Belle Fortte is one of the fine interior designers that Edge is honored to have on its team, and her breathtaking designs are quickly gaining notice.

Belle is originally from Argentina, which is warmly known as the “Paris of South America” for its magnificent architecture, sophisticated trends, European flair and exotic charm. She studied architecture at Argentina’s National University of Mar del Plata, and is just as comfortable perusing and amending technical blueprints as she is at selecting the right luxury materials needed to make a statement. Her distinguished experience brings detailed architectural professionalism, fresh and innovative design imagination, and an international influence that EDGE’s luxury clients absolutely love.

This magnificent kitchen Belle shares with Design + Decor invites onlookers to admire and revere its refined splendor. Modern yet warm, the kitchen was remodeled to suit the taste of the clients, who primarily enjoy entertaining in their kitchen space. “They wanted something different—a showstopper,” says Belle. “They mainly wanted a beautiful entertaining space for their guests, with a bar nearby. They were all about the aesthetics, the comfort, the

Design + Decor 85

functionality and the entertaining.”

The clients trusted Belle completely, giving her artistic license to create a jaw-dropping space—and they were ecstatic with the stunning results. The fine cabinetry in this magnificent remodel was also an EDGE in-house accomplishment, crafted by expert cabinet designer, Krystal Matrishion.

When first connecting with clients, Belle dives deeply into their lifestyle and meets their needs based on their wish list. “I ask about their lifestyle in general, not just about the kitchen,” she says. “It helps me create the perfect space for my client if I know, do they appreciate the outdoors? Are they foodies? Do they love to cook? Do they enjoy entertaining? All these questions help. Knowing their lifestyle is the most important part.”

These particular clients preferred not to focus on the cooking factor. Belle cleverly met and exceeded expectations with this kitchen wonder of white, black and warm wood, blended expertly with exquisite natural elements. “The cabinets are painted white oak; the counters are pure white quartz integrated with natural granite to find a perfect visual balance,” she explains. “I wanted the focus to be on the beautiful natural stone granite. We mixed and matched materials for interest, like the white tile backsplash. I wanted to combine the textures, but to have a sense of elegant balance.”

We asked Belle about the fantastic lighting that floats above the island. “It was love at first sight with that,” she says. “We have the same one in a larger format in the dining room.” A perfect fit for clients who appreciate entertaining friends and family, these Hubbardton Forge lighting pendants look like ice cubes lit from within, with their soft, welcoming glow that beckons guests to get cozy and savor their vodka martinis.

“My focus is to create a magnificent kitchen design that is truly customized to fit my clients’ needs—a kitchen to make their lifestyle easier, a kitchen they will really enjoy,” says Belle. Her impressive portfolio includes specialty commercial design as well as high-end residential, as exemplified by this modern dream home that exudes bold personality. “I like to work with architects to share ideas and suggest additional uses for a space,” she continues. “I always try to think about how exactly my clients will use the space, step-by-step. How will they get from point A to point B? How will this space or design be practical for my client? I genuinely consider every dimension of a space. The downfall of not working with a professional is that sometimes a client is left with an awkward space that doesn’t have a purpose.” This gorgeous modern showstopper demonstrates how engaging a professional is fundamental to creating a space with maximum function and picture-perfect impact.

Belle’s passion for serving clients makes her key to the firm’s select team. “I love doing what I do and, here at EDGE, I get to do more of what I love to do,” she says with enthusiasm. While Belle is busy creating intentional, showroom-worthy spaces for her EDGE clientele, she is also accepting new clients eager to uplift their lives with her innovative, beautiful design.

AN EXPLOSION OF COLOR IN SOUTH TAMPA

A home layered with color and art Story by Meryl Siegman | Photography by Uneek Image

The front door of this otherwise typical, modern home in South Tampa, FL, gives a hint of the visual delights that dwell inside. Painted in a bold lime green, the door is a bright pop of color that can be seen from the street, offering an unconventional way to be greeted and a glimpse of what’s to come when you enter. The couple who owns the house had been living there for some time, never quite satisfied with the white walls, smallish rooms and boxy feel of the interiors. It was time to give their living spaces a major facelift.

An Interior Designer Who Embraces Color

The owners, Kari LaRocco, a well-known financial planner who loves to make personal finances fun, and Eric Hall, a personal trainer with a wide following, hired Lisa Gilmore, the principal designer and founder of Lisa Gilmore Design. Lisa is one of the Southeast’s most prominent luxury residential designers, known for the bold, one-of-a-kind interiors she creates for her clients. Her “livable glamour” sensibility and outside-the-box thinking were irresistibly appealing to the couple.

Lisa says of her clients, “The owners inhabit the art world and have a deep appreciation for art. They have an active, energetic lifestyle. They wanted their home to be a reflection of who they are as individuals, one that would showcase their spectacular art collection. They were okay with their boundaries being pushed.” And push she did, using her fertile imagination and signature love of color to create a daring interior concept for this two-story, four-bedroom house that would make her clients feel totally at home. She also enjoyed the free rein she was given to go all-out in her design work, saying, “It was so nice to be trusted and to take what they loved and run with it.”

Thinking Outside the Box

Lisa likes to start the relationship with her clients with an introductory meeting. “At the very beginning of the project,” she explains, “we talk about functionality and aesthetics, and how they live their lives, so I can get to know them and understand their vision. Then I dive into the design.”

Taking a cue from the owners, who admired the work of interior designer Kelly Wearstler, Lisa set out to create something uniquely tailored to their taste and lifestyle. Wearstler is considered one of the most irreverent and successful designers in the field today, pushing boundaries with her inventive and venturous commercial and residential projects. “Her projects are very bold and provocative,” Lisa says. “I really leaned into that. I naturally work with a lot of color and pattern in most of my projects, so I wasn’t afraid to let my eccentric side come out. My clients loved everything I presented to them right off the bat.”

Transcendent Living Spaces

In this house, an adventure awaits in every room. The home office required a style to fit Kari’s zest for her job as a high-profile financial advisor. Lisa describes it as having a very feminine vibe, saying, “This room had to have flair, yet function as an inspiring place for her to work and feel energized.” Lisa hired Ron Francis, a local artisan, to create a gold-leaf ceiling and hand paint the walls with pink and gold detailing. Ron is known for his artistic installations in residential and commercial interiors using authentic mineral plasters. The scope of his work includes decorative, faux, texture and mural painting, wall stenciling and Venetian plaster.

A leopard print rug from Lisa’s own collection livens up the office’s floor, its shimmery silk color palette of blush pink, champagne and gold adding a bit of dazzle to the space. Lisa speaks proudly of her rug collection, explaining that each piece is custom designed and then hand knotted at a factory in India, with which she has a relationship. “I love to work with patterns and scales, and to mix colors to create exactly what my project needs,” she says. “At the moment, my rug collection is available exclusively to my clients, but my goal is to have an official launch by

the end of the year.”

Kari and Eric wanted the guest bedroom to be fun, so Lisa installed an eye-catching, large-scale portrait of a tiger over the bed. To make the room cozy and inviting, she enlisted Ron Francis to create textured, intricately patterned latticework on the walls. In the den, which is playfully referred to as the “hangover room,” the designer made a statement with an explosion of color paired with a super comfortable sofa where the couple can lounge and watch TV.

Lisa expresses her fondness for using vintage and antique pieces when possible, pointing out the chandelier she chose for the dining room. “It’s really a sculptured piece of art,” she exclaims. “It’s huge for the space. Most people would have been afraid to use such a statement piece, but it’s such a sculptural experience that creates a moment in the house. I am so glad they went for it!” She also chose vintage light fixtures crafted from Murano glass for the entryway, dining room and master bedroom. “Vintage is great in a modern house,” she says. “It doesn’t have to be traditional.”

But the adrenaline rush of dramatic splashes of color ends at door to the master bedroom. Inside, the room is almost completely devoid of color, with only whites, grays and golds to create a sense of luxurious restfulness. “It’s a place for Kari and Eric to unwind,” Lisa says. “But it’s not without the appeal of the rest of the house.” Its calm but compelling look is enhanced by highly hand-scraped textured walls that resemble weeping willow trees, also created by Ron Francis. “In this room,” Lisa explains, “I continued the feeling of art, texture and pattern on a monochromatic level.”

Bold Artwork Adds to the Vibe

The artwork in the home captures the very essence of its owners, with the work of artist Ashley Longshore making up much of this fabulous collection. This Southern-born, self-taught painter and sculptor, known for her engaging pop art, is often called the “feminist Andy Warhol.” Her work is big and bold in its larger-than-life proportions, daring use of color and hot-button subject matter. Her iconic pieces, such as the pink-toned circle in a square in the foyer, are scattered throughout the house. Lisa sourced the brightly hued painting in the den from a Parisian artist whose colorful pieces she incorporates into her design schemes as often as possible.

The creative use of color and layers of texture in this South Tampa home is a reflection of its owners’ dynamic lifestyle and profound appreciation for art. With Lisa Gilmore’s visionary touch, the home is a testament to individuality and positive energy, where each room invites eager exploration and every piece of art sparks lively conversation. It demonstrates the power of design to reflect well-lived lives that are defined by joie de vivre, leaving an indelible impression on all who enter.

Debut Showroom Worth Showing Off

Abodeable opens an exceptional new showroom in Naples.

Southwest Florida is no stranger to interior designers, but it is exceedingly rare to find a full-service firm that has as much experience with the construction and design side of the business as Abodeable. With more than 30 years in the Naples design market, Abodeable prides itself on being able to handle every aspect of a home for its clients. And now, the firm has a brand-new way to meet those clients and display what makes the company so special: its first showroom, Abodeable Home, which opened last fall in Naples. Recently, Design + Decor spoke with Danielle Reardon, principal of Abodeable, to get the inside scoop about the firm’s team and their new space.

Abodeable’s 30 years of success has come in large part from its commitment to forming partnerships with every one of its clients. The firm works closely with clients to ensure that every last detail is suited to their lifestyle. “My goal is always to immerse myself in the client’s aesthetic and lifestyle,” Danielle explains. “I truly hone in on the homeowners and how they live and entertain. I take special note of large families, families with small children, whether the client wants to be able to host large groups of people, and how this relates to the constraints of the home’s architecture. My background in construction facilitates my ability to en -

vision full remodels to better suit a client’s needs, though we often work within existing walls to deliver a space that reaches its full potential.”

Danielle and Abodeable’s vast array of experience and ability to adapt to every client means the new showroom is equipped with a wide variety of truly unique pieces for clients to see. Abodeable Home is “a seamless expansion of the existing business of design and construction,” says Danielle. The expansion not only offers a space that enables clients to view what Abodeable has to offer, but also supports the firm’s projects, as Abodeable can now furnish a home down to the smallest piece, rather than relying on local shopping. “Before the boutique, when it was time to install, we would travel up and down Tamiami Trail, searching for the perfect vase or cashmere throw,” she continues. “Now we can preorder items with specific clients in mind, and showcase these wonderful finds in our store.”

What might you find when visiting Abodeable Home? The company’s head of retail went to great lengths to ensure that the showroom would have unique and personal touches throughout. “I agreed to open the boutique with the business acumen of offering one-of-a-kind bespoke furnishings that are detail- and quality-driven, coupled with home accessories and small gift items so the retail customer can have access to the same pieces that designers source. I didn’t want a store full of neutral upholstery—I wanted to create a space that offers specialty pieces that can be purchased only through a designer.”

Design + Decor highly recommends that you see Abodeable Home’s lovely new space for yourself. The showroom is located in Naples at 4085 Tamiami Trail North, B 105, in the Alexander’s Plaza. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. As the team looks towards future expansions, Danielle is enjoying these early days of the boutique and the opportunity to meet people in the community. “The store has been very well received, and we’ve been very fortunate to have a wonderful clientele!” she says. “We are excited to expand, but are enjoying this moment in time, establishing our foundation within the Naples community and meeting our amazing customers.”
