V PAVILION CONCEPT

The Cathedral of Hope lies on a 12-acre site 5 miles from downtown Dallas. The late architect Philip Johnson designed two prominent features on the Church’s campus: the John Thomas Bell Wall and the Interfaith Peace Chapel – Johnson’s last commissioned work before his death. The Church asked MESA to develop a campus master plan that will create connections between the separate programming elements, increase parking efficiency, integrate a new community center building, emphasize the architectural interest, improve visibility from the street, and add multi-functional outdoor event spaces. MESA designed a new tree-lined curvilinear entry approach road that brings visitors around the campus and focuses their views through the large Meadow toward the signature architectural features. New signage and landscaping at the entry celebrates the Church and creates a welcoming entrance for visitors while improving the overall curb appeal of the campus. The plan moves vehicular traffic and parking to the outer perimeter of the site, making the inner portion a pedestrian-only zone perfect for outdoor events and ceremonies. A large plaza space with a cloister-inspired shade structure, landscape areas, canopy trees, and seating, connects the main sanctuary with the Interfaith Peace Chapel, Meadow, Memorial Garden, and parking lot.

LAKE & FOUNTAIN

The T. Boone Pickens Hospice and Palliative Care Center, owned and operated by Presbyterian Communities and Services (PCS), will be the first campus of its kind. PCS will offer a comprehensive approach to end-of-life care with five “Centers of Excellence,” including the Inpatient Care Center, Child and Bereavement Center, Resource and Education Center, Spiritual Care Center, and Outdoor Reflection Center. The 9-acre property will be developed as a phased campus and serve as the headquarters for Faith Presbyterian Hospice’s community-care, outreach, home hospice, and training facilities. MESA worked with the design team to create a comprehensive site assessment that led to a holistic outdoor program, final master plan, and Phase I development for the Outdoor Reflection Center (ORC). Private, semi-private, and public areas were created for specialized care to fulfill a variety of patient and family needs. The design of the ORC includes the reformation of an existing lake, the creation of the Lakeside Terrace Gardens, partnerships with both Audubon International and Audubon Texas, and programmed amenities such as an amphitheater, labyrinth, courtyards, salubrious gardens, and trails throughout the site that offer a thoughtful balance of social interaction and privacy.

COMMUNITY ENTRY DETAILS

CREEKSIDE Community Development projects are usually characterized by traditional architectural styles and vernacular influences as they are visually familiar, age well, and are harmonious with the residential architecture typically found within the community. The Client for Creekside seeks to introduce a fresh and contemporary take on the residential product with crisp lines and clean finishes to offer buyers an aesthetic contrasting with the traditional styles prevalent in the market. This vision necessitated a design response for the community entry that was equally bold and fresh, with suitable regard to the uniquely styled homes to be found behind the gates. The concept for the gateway was inspired by architectural cues taken from the Client’s product design, traditional garden arbors, and Asian garden lanterns expressed as the columns elevating the pergola above. As traditional garden lanterns provided offerings of light in the darkness, the gateway columns provide a welcoming gesture to visitors and residents as they arrive at Creekside. The landscape design complements the architecture with strong linear forms and monoculture plantings to give a restrained yet lush setting to the gateway and homes within the community.

INSPIRATION Inspiration is a master planned community on the western shores of Lake Lavon in Collin County, Texas. Encompassing almost 600 acres, it is envisioned as a sustainable lakefront community providing resort-style amenities, design, and value. The site is comprised of rolling topography and wooded draws forming several small watersheds draining into Lake Lavon. The existing site is primarily grazed grassland with stands of eastern red cedar, cedar elm, oaks, and black willow in the lowlands. The land plan takes advantage of ridges with panoramic views as well as lush drainage ways creating a plan that coexists with the native landscape while accommodating development. At the main entry, the central spine road is flanked with lots facing the collector road while providing a social integration that invites visitors into the community. These diverse site characteristics define the neighborhood parcels, predominantly organized around preserved ponds and open space, intermittent streams, passive parks, and community amenities.

Volunteer Work Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue

OVER THE past few years I’ve contributed graphic design & branding to a local Minneapolis-based animal rescue as a way to give back to a cause in which I believe. The organization is currently run by a great group of people who have huge hearts but no graphic abilities. This re-branding of the rescue was intended to give the brand a modern look but keep the human touch very much alive through copy written in the voice of “professional snarky”. Branding needs included general marketing materials, information pages, foster promotion fliers, multiple Facebook campaigns, fundrasier graphics, and website design. By utilizing clean simple font family and minimal color over black and white, the brand has been set up in a way which can continue to be used and modified after my time with the group has ended to ensure Wags & Whiskers lives long and prospers.
