Richard R. Hough III Leader • Mentor • Scouter Richard R. Hough III, a resident of Little Silver, N.J., has been an outstanding model of a "Good Scout." Richard “Rick” Hough is President and Chief Operation Officer of Silvercrest Asset Management Group LLC, and was the founding national program director of the Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF) which raised hundreds of millions of dollars in 1999 to provide pre-college scholarships to help low and moderate income children attend private or parochial schools. Rick also helped develop a new hymnal for the Catholic Church, The Adoremus Hymnal, in 1997. As an Eagle Scout and longtime Scouting volunteer, Rick has always lived by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. He has volunteered countless hours to promote the ideals and principles of Scouting. Rick is an Executive Board member and lead volunteer with Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America. He is the current Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 126 in Little Silver, N.J., was a former Committee Chair for Cub Scout Pack 8 in Red Bank, N.J., and served as an Assistant District Commissioner in the National Capital Area Council. “I never forgot how to say the words for the Scout Oath and Law and they became a loadstar for me.” He added, “I tell my Scouts that it’s not about what rank they achieve, it’s whether they accomplish the aim of Scouting and become good citizens and responsible young men who live the Oath and Law every day.” As Scoutmaster, Rick takes tremendous pride in sharing his knowledge and experience to help mentor and guide the Scouts in his Boy Scout Troop. “My Scoutmaster, Hugo Durand, taught me how to lead and to take initiative. He inspired me to get deeply involved in scouting,” said Rick who became an Eagle Scout in 1984 while with Troop 157 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“What you give to the boys is given back to you three times over,” he explained. “As a Scoutmaster, I follow Baden Powell’s advise: ‘Never do for a boy what a boy can do for himself.’” Rick is now entering his second year as the Monmouth Council Popcorn Kernel. In 2011, he used his leadership skills to coordinate and guide 90 Scouting units through an extremely successful Trails-End Popcorn Sale. The sale raised more than a quarter of a million dollars in commissions to help fund Scouting unit activities and programs that benefit Scouts across Monmouth County. In 2010, he served as Chairman of the Monmouth Council 100th Anniversary Committee and helped develop and coordinate a variety of successful programs and activities to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. Rick has earned his Wood Badge, Wilderness First Aid Certification, and has taken as many opportunities as possible to be trained for the betterment of his Scouts and Troop. Rick is an enthusiastic advocate for the Scouting program. “I don’t think there is any organization more effective at building future responsible citizens and young people who make good decisions for their lives. I hope that by receiving this award, I can inspire people to see what Scouts are doing on behalf of youth and what they are like, and that we can hope for our future because of Scouting.” In addition to currently serving on the President’s Council of CSF, he was a founding board member of the Washington Scholarship Fund. Rick also was a founding board member of the New York Men’s Leadership Forum. He is a board member of the Ridge Foundation which supports the University of Virginia’s National Marriage Project, and he serves on the advisory boards of The New Criterion and Christendom College. Rick graduated with an A.B. in politics from Princeton University, where remains active with the James Madison Program and has served in several class leadership positions. Rick resides in Little Silver with his wife Vera and their four children, Ralston, Sarah, Margaret and Thomas.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). This counsel of Sacred Scripture guides the efforts of Catholic schools and the Boy Scouts of America. It has also been a guiding principle of the life and work of Richard Hough in his support of both Catholic education and the Boy Scouts. Congratulations, Rick, on this well-deserved recognition.
