A Message from the Director

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express has been carrying passengers from Belen to Santa Fe and all destinations in between for twelve years. Rio Metro’s leadership and employees are dedicated to delivering on our promise of safe, reliable, and customer-focused transportation services, and we continue to strive for excellence. Delivering you safely to your destination is our number one priority at Rio Metro, and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is already an extremely safe way to travel in central New Mexico. In fact, based on an evaluation of accident data between 2008 and 2018, Rail Runner is nearly 7 times safer than traveling on Interstate 25 in Valencia, Bernalillo, Sandoval and Santa Fe Counties. While the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is already extremely safe, Rio Metro will be implementing additional safety measures on the territory over the next two years. These measures, known as “Positive Train Control” will monitor train operations across the territory to prevent certain types of accidents like train to train collisions and high-speed train derailments on low speed curves. While The New Mexico Rail Runner Express has never experienced any “Positive Train Control” (PTC) preventable accidents, the implementation of PTC will provide an additional layer of safety to our operation. The system will not only protect the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, but it will also protect Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight trains and Amtrak passenger trains that operate on the territory. We are proud of our safety record over our first twelve years, and as we move forward, we honor our commitment to you, our customers, and welcome your ideas for how we can serve you better. Please contact us at 1-866-795-7245 if you have suggestions or comments. Thank you for riding Rio Metro! Beer and Chile – A Perfect Pair Chile breathers are not new in New Mexico; the state’s love for green and red is well documented. However, there are those among us who believe the pepper passion is part of the reason the state’s craft beer brewing industry has expanded so widely and quickly. “New Mexicans were relatively early to embrace craft beer and breweries, at least compared to neighboring states such as Arizona and Texas,” says John Gozigian, executive director of the New Mexico Brewers’ Guild. “There are many theories that try to explain New Mexican’s love of robust, hop-forward craft ales, but the one that rings most true is that our palette is already accustomed to the intense flavors of our local cuisine.” Gozigian says every brewery along the New Mexico Rail Runner Express route from Santa Fe to Belen will have beers that can be paired with chile dishes. “Depending upon the time of year and the dish, I would recommend anything from a light lager to an imperial stout.” There are 71 brewery members in the Guild, and if you don’t know where to start coolin’ your taste buds with flavorful suds, the following might give you some ideas.

SECOND STREET Santa Fe’s Second Street Brewery is very popular with devoted beer drinkers, and why not? They brew and serve German-style beer (Agua Fria Pilsner), Vienna-style beer (Rufina Amber), Belgian beer (Diablo Canyon Pale Ale) and American beer (Coffee Porter). The list goes on for something like 60 craft beers, and Second Street was voted as having the Best Beer Brewed in Santa Fe and Best Taproom in Santa Fe as recently as 2015. New Mexican taste buds also can be rewarded with some very familiar flavors. “We do sell a lot of green-chile cheeseburgers here,” says Jack Rosser, the front-of-house manager, “but when it comes to enchiladas, more people do Christmas.” Ah yes, Christmas, that spicy combination of red and green chiles that makes everyone think of December’s decorations. Like chile itself, Second Street is a New Mexico success story. The brewery opened in 1996, with the objective of providing fresh beer to loyal local beer drinkers. In 2003 the brewery at the original location – 1814 Second Street – needed to expand and additional brewing Second Street Brewery in Santa Fe capacity was added. The offers red, green and Christmas to restaurant expanded in 2004. go with beers like the Coffee Porter. In 2010, additional restaurant Photo by Martin Frentzel capacity was created at the 8

Railyard location, and in 2017 a taproom and beer hall fermented at 2920 Rufina St. Rosser recommends teaming the Coffee Porter with a redchile lunch. It’s a combination that’s hard to argue with if you appreciate full-flavored porters and stouts. It is a delicious blend of two popular drinks that deserves your full attention. Whether you order the enchiladas, the New Mexico Farmer’s Plate appetizer, or a Philly Cheesesteak with red, the porter will make it a meal to remember. The Farmer’s Plate has lamb sausage, New Mexico cheeses and chutney made by the Bosque Brewing’s new Bernalillo Second Street staff. The Chicken location offers great views. Cobb Salad is another option Photo by Martin Frentzel which includes Chimayo Chile Pecans. It’s great. Second Street’s Railyard location, 1607 Paseo de Peralta, is adjacent to the Rail Runner tracks and just steps from the Santa Fe Depot Station. The location is as popular as the beer. “We have a decent amount of people coming here, and many people who fly into Albuquerque take the train to Santa Fe,” Rosser says. BREW WITH A VIEW The Sandia Mountains rest against the eastern horizon and the Rio Grande flows south past massive cottonwoods. There are two levels of seating at Bosque Brewing Company’s newest brewery – the old Jackalope Pottery in Bernalillo – and both indoor and outdoor tables make this a lovely spot to enjoy a cold craft beer, food, and the golden scenery of cottonwoods in the fall. Ernesto Caballero, one of the store managers at Bosque’s Bernalillo brew palace, says its popularity is keeping him and all the Bosque employees very busy. “We were packed from top to bottom the day we opened,” he says. Craft beer enthusiasts visiting the Bernalillo location have shown a preference for Elephants on Parade, Caballero says. “It’s a wheat ale brewed with cherries and raspberries, a good summer beer.” The beer is one of six year-round offerings. The others are Bosque Lager (a German Pilsner), Pistol Pete’s 1888 Ale (a thirst-quenching blond ale that’s a tribute to Bosque’s NMSU fans in Las Cruces), an earthy Brewery Boot Amber Ale, Bosque IPA, and the ever-popular Scotia Scotch Ale that packs a punch. Bosque is a great example of the growth in New Mexico’s brewing industry. The company started in 2012 and reported producing a total of 350 barrels in 2013. Since then, it expanded to two locations in Albuquerque, two in Las Cruces and the new Bernalillo location. Bosque brewed 10,168 barrels in 2017.

SOUL BEER Red Beans and Rice, Southern Fried Chicken, and Chicken and Waffles probably don’t sound like the kind of fare one should expect at Oktoberfest in Germany or New Mexico, but they are on the menu at Nexus Brewery & Restaurant, 4730 Pan American Freeway NE. This soul food menu regularly receives high marks and honors from Albuquerque’s craft beer drinkers, and is regularly voted one of Albuquerque’s Top Five bar food establishments. Owner Ken Carson, a member of the Brewer’s Guild boards of directors, started out as a banking executive. When he branched out into brewing he developed a menu for the New Mexico palette: New Mexico Hot Chicken with red chile, cayenne pepper and habanero spices, and the New Mexico Soul Burger with red chile barbeque sauce. Nexus also has taken the guess work out of which beer to pair with your meal. The Scottish Ale goes with the Soul Burger as well as Chicken and Waffles. The Red Ale complements Red Beans and Rice and Nachos, and the India Pale Ale can be matched with spicy food like Enchiladas and Frito Pie. Ask your server. The original Nexus location on Pan American Freeway may be a long stroll from the Rail Runner, but that is about to change. The Nexus Blue Smokehouse & Brewery is scheduled to open at 1521 Broadway SE, just minutes from the Rail Runner’s Downtown ABQ Station. ON THE HORIZON The Canteen Brewhouse, serving craft beer since 1994 under the name Il Vicino, will be the site of the Beer Premiere on Oct. 27. Neverbefore-released beers from New Mexico breweries will debut. The Brewhouse is Felicia Jaramillo Personal Service Representative at 2381 Aztec NE in 6 Years of Service Albuquerque. The annual WinterBrew is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2019, at the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market pavilion. Watch the Brewers’ Guild website, nmbeer.org, for details.

Socorro - You've got Saddle up and head south, partner. The new rodeo arena and sports complex opened last year in the little city that offers something to love for everyone - Socorro. The complex is part of a larger, long-term vision that Socorro city leaders hope will attract athletes, rodeo cowboys and patrons, concert-goers, and others to the area.

Funding for the complex came from a loan from the Lodgers’ Tax, and the other half came from the State Legislature. A future civic center near the Rodeo and Sports Complex is also in the works. Many events are planned for the new facility, including concerts, horse shows and clinics, and rugby tournaments, as well as rodeos and barrel races.

Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex Amenities: Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array The Very Large Array [VLA] is comprised of 27 radio telescopes in a “Y” pattern spread across the plains of San Augustin 50 miles west of Socorro. The VLA has been used by more astronomers and has been mentioned in more scientific papers than any other radio telescope in the world. Each antenna is an 82-foot diameter dish that weighs 230 tons. The on-site visitor center and gift shop offers displays and videos that educate about radio astronomy and the VLA telescope, and are open all year from 8:30 am to sunset. A self-guided tour lets visitors explore the antennas up close.

Rio Metro’s Website Got an Upgrade The Rio Metro Regional Transit District debuted a new, mobile-friendly website in September 2018. The website, which was under development for several months, includes a variety of updated features, making it convenient for passengers to use from either a desktop or mobile device. Some of the updated features include: • Language Translation – Translate the website into more than 100 languages • Metro Spotlight – View upcoming events and important announcements on this new portion of the homepage • Interactive Events Calendar – View events by day, week or month

Rio Metro recently debuted a new, mobile responsive website.

• Social Quick Links – Quickly follow Rio Metro on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more • Alert Center – In the event of an emergency or closure, alert notifications will appear at the top of the homepage and all pages within the site

In addition to these and other great updates, Rio Metro is working with a developer to create an interactive train schedule. The interactive schedule will allow passengers to select their travel starting point and destination, and will quickly generate train times and information based on the selections made. Look for this feature to go live in the next few months.

Meet Melissa Mackel, NM Rail Runner Express Engineer Melissa Mackel is a woman who loves watching wildlife, especially along the New Mexico Rail Runner Express tracks between Santo Domingo Pueblo and the Santa Fe Co./NM599 Station outside Santa Fe. Mackel is an Engineer on the Rail Runner, so she gets to see this part of the rail corridor often. “I am a wildlife and nature lover,” she says. “I have seen eagles and peregrine falcons and a bobcat along those tracks. My father is an avid hunter and farmer, so I grew up with that pretty much in my nature.” Mackel’s father, Ernest, is also a chess player, she says. While raising Melissa at Zuni he taught her to think four and five moves in advance, good training for a 38-year-old engineer who commands Rail Runner trains from Belen to Santa Fe.

INTERESTING FOLKS Herzog Transit Services, Inc., the contractor hired to operate the Rail Runner, is Melissa’s employer. “When running the train, you always have to be vigilant and looking ahead at the whole landscape,” she says. “But I like the challenges that arise when we are delayed; making sure I deliver a smooth but speedy arrival at our destination.” Mackel started working on the Rail Runner in 2006, the year the service started. Her first job “right off the street” was as a conductor assisting passengers, during which she met some pretty interesting riders and colleagues. The elderly riders and the military veterans are among her favorites, including a Navy veteran named Phil who worked around planes during his years of service to the

country. She finds inspiration in his stories of deployment around the world. “I would love to get my aviators license,” she says. “I would love to be a pilot.” As long as she is grounded and held in the engineer’s cab, however, dealing with the people she shuttles along the tracks is rewarding. “I like to think the long-haul commuters are the ones who benefit the most from the Rail Runner. Maybe they stayed up late the night before, and they can rest during the trip.” “But I also think that taking people off the interstate helps to reduce the incidence of road rage. I used to work banker’s hours and I would see people totally lose their composure. It is as if patience, common sense and courtesy are not taught anymore,” Mackel says. She worked retail before being hired by Herzog. Her father instilled those qualities in her and her siblings. “If we wanted something, or needed attention, he taught us we had to wait our turn,” she says. “He was old school; children are seen but not heard, and treat others the way you want to be treated.”

LOBO LEAGUE, TOO Melissa has deep respect for her father. “He likes to call himself a jack-of-all-trades and master of none, but he is talented artistically and mechanically. He has civil engineering skills. He has built things from the ground up that would stump most people, but he breezes right through.” Mackel loved growing up at Zuni, watching her father farm, watching the wildlife and enjoying the success of his hunting. Most of her high school years were spent at Zuni, but she transferred to Gallup for her senior year. “I was also taking classes at UNM,” she says. She is a competitor and played basketball, softball and volleyball when she was in school. She even competed in debate, and continues to compete in volleyball through the Lobo League. Despite the competitive spirit, Melissa Mackle appreciates her colleagues at Herzog, and their willingness to help each other through low periods. “The camaraderie with my co-workers is what boosts your moral and helps you get through.” That, and the lessons she learned from a farming father who thinks four or five moves ahead.

Taos Pueblo’s Living Community Has Much to be Admired

Taos Pueblo welcomes visitors

from all over the world. It’s considered the oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States by archaeologists who say ancestors of Micaceous Pottery the Taos Indians lived in the valley Photo Credit: Taos Pueblo Tourism long before Columbus discovered America and even hundreds of years before Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. And the people of Taos Pueblo are happy to share their storied history with tourists. It’s something the Pueblo has been sharing openly since the 1920s. “Take a tour of the pueblo, if possible,” says Ilona Spruce, tourism director for Taos Pueblo. “Some of our guides are college students who were born and raised here and come back to share their perspective of the pueblo. There’s something very special about this because they are truly proud of where they came from and who we are as a people.” Parts of this Northern New Mexico pueblo remain much like they were when the first Spanish explorers arrived in New Mexico in 1540. Those explorers were looking for the fabled Cities of Gold and believed Taos was one of them. Architecture is a big draw of the Pueblo. The structures are made entirely of adobe — earth mixed with water and straw, made into sun-dried bricks. Roofs of each of the five stories are supported by large timbers (vigas) hauled down from the

mountain forests. Smaller pieces of wood, pine or aspen latillas, are placed on top of the vigas. The roof is then covered with packed dirt. The outside surfaces of the pueblo are continuously maintained by “Taking a Tour” plastering with thick layers of mud. Photo Credit: Rima Krisst Interior walls are carefully coated with thin washes of white earth to keep them clean and bright. The pueblo is actually many individual homes, built side-by-side and in layers, with common walls but no connecting doorways. In earlier days there were no doors or windows, and entry was gained only from the top. Today, about 150 people live at the pueblo full time, and another 1,500 or so other families own more modern homes to the north or south of the oldest two structures. “When people visit for the first time, I like to remind them to be mindful that our pueblo is a living community,” Spruce says. “Even though we openly welcome our visitors, we also need to let them know that these are people’s homes and some of the most beautiful and architecturally unique spaces.” Taos Pueblo is a World Heritage Site as well. The pueblo is open to visitors daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except during tribal ritual days that require closing the Pueblo. Late winter to early spring, the pueblo closes for about 10 weeks. Museum Showcases History & Culture of Los Lunas The Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts interprets the rich history of the people and events of Valencia County. The museum is housed in a renovated building that was constructed during the Thirties as a Works Progress Administration project, and in the intervening years it has served many purposes, including as a community center, farm administration offices, fire department, police station, municipal court, and public library. In 2008, the Village of Los Lunas re-dedicated the building on the occasion of opening the Museum of Heritage and Arts to honor long-serving Clerk-Treasurer Agustin Archuleta. For a decade, visitors to Los Lunas have been stopping by the Museum to learn the stories of the Rio Abajo, and we encourage you to visit us during your stay in Los Lunas! Located one-half mile north of the Los Lunas Transportation Center, the Museum is within convenient walking distance when passengers disembark the Rail Runner.

The Museum is located beneath the landmark water tower in Los Lunas.

The Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts

Stretching along the east side of NM Highway 314 is a paved walking path suitable for pedestrians and bicyclists to walk and ride from the train center north to Main Street. A historical marker honoring the memory of Captain Maximiliano Luna (1870-1899) stands near the path’s halfway point, and as you continue toward Main Street on your right is the site where the original San Clemente Catholic Church was erected in 1894. From the intersection of Main Street and Highway 314, the Museum is located two blocks to the east. Ninety years ago when Los Lunas incorporated as a village, Main Street was a stretch of U.S. Route 66, “the Mother Road” linking Chicago to Santa Monica, California, and the Museum stands alongside that historic roadway. Located at 251 Main Street SE and open on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the Museum is most recognizable as the building beneath the water tower at Luna Avenue and Main Street. For information about our events calendar, please call us at 505-352-7720, or visit www. facebook.com/loslunasmuseum. “Our roots are on the route,” as we like to say, and we welcome you to Los Lunas!

Chama: New Mexico’s Mecca for Winter Fun One of the best-kept secrets in New Mexico is the enchanting little village of Chama at the top of the state. It is the western home of the Cumbres & Toltec steam railroad, the home of great trout fishing and horseback riding in its summer meadows.

Oh yeah, and it’s an absolute mecca for winter sports, too! Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snow-shoeing—everything but downhill skiing is abundantly available in Chama’s gorgeous natural open country. Every Martin Luther King weekend, in January, Chama hosts the Chama Chile Ski Classic, a cross-country ski event. There are races and special events occurring all weekend. There’s also a fabulous hot air balloon rally the last weekend in February. Chama, with its lively Western-style business district, several hotels and cozy dining establishments, is located on U.S. 84 (take the “Chama Highway” out of Española) in the beautiful and diverse Chama Valley near the Colorado border. The valley, created and traversed by the Rio Chama, is situated in the southern Rockies at 7,860 feet elevation, with nearby Brazos Peaks offering mountain vistas and scenic gorges. The valley’s human history is rich with stories of toil and innovation, from the indigenous Indian people to Hispanic settlers to trappers and latter-day business people attracted by the varied

resources. Winter especially offers breathtaking beauty in the Rio Chama Valley. Days are sunny; nights are clear and Photo courtesy of Chama Valley Chamber filled with stars. In the valley, of Commerce. the combination of bright sunshine and lack of humidity make for surprisingly comfortable days.

In the surrounding mountain passes, you’ll find a reliable base of snow. The gentle terrain of the mesas makes for perfect crosscountry skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Groomed trails and marked tracks crisscross easily accessible public lands. This area has five yurts available for those wishing to spend the night. In colder years, visitors and residents gather for fine ice fishing on Heron Reservoir. For your safety and comfort, Chama locals warn to always check with the appropriate ranger district before heading out; never travel alone, and make sure you are adequately prepared.

For more information go to Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-477-0149. For yurt information go to www.skichama.com.

Santa’s Village: A Holiday Event for Kids of All Ages Jolly old St. Nick is scheduled to visit the Santa Fe Railyard on Saturday, December 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 6th Annual Santa’s Village, sponsored by the Rio Metro Regional Transit District. You don’t have to be a youngster to enjoy the event and visit with Santa - you just have to believe. “We usually get between four thousand and six thousand guests,” says Coryn Kiefer Helmken, owner of KH Creative Group and coordinator of the event. “Although one year we had a crazy snow storm and attendance was down, but it was still busy.” “We will have arts and crafts materials available,” Kiefer Helmken says. “There will also be opportunities to write a letter to Santa and decorate Christmas cookies.” These are just a few of the activities visitors will experience. Face painting is also on the agenda, she says, and a caricature artist will be on hand. “The artist does really good family drawings, and that’s very popular at Christmas.” “Santa’s Village has become a marquee event for Rio Metro and we continue to be amazed at the response”, says Allyne Clarke, marketing director for Rio Metro. This year’s event also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Santa Fe Depot Train Station, the last stop along the rail’s 100-mile corridor, and we are planning something special to celebrate. Those interested in history will be able to listen to the Fanfare Victorian Carolers, who stroll through the Depot and surrounding area dressed in full Victorian apparel. That’s something kids don’t see very often. “The carolers take you back into a time when things were a little easier,” says Kiefer Helmken. Victorians are credited with creating many of today’s favorite carols, including “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, “Deck the Halls”, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, and “Jingle Bells”. Reservations are not necessary - people can just show up. And they do from Belen to Albuquerque, and right there in Santa Fe.

Guests from south of Santa Fe are encouraged to take the New Mexico Rail Runner Express to the event. There will be a special Santa’s Village train schedule on that day, with additional trains to accommodate passengers. For more information, a schedule of activities, and to view the special train schedule, visit riometro.org. Information will become available mid-November.

There are lots of fun photo opportunities throughout the event.

The interactive model railroad is always a big hit.
