WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL PRIDE 2018 For the last three years, Liverpool Pride has called St George’s Quarter home. However, after a roller coaster ride, we return to our roots – Tithebarn Street is a stone’s throw away from our Gay Quarter, and the site includes Pownall Square, the home of Mersey Pride 1995 (which was the last Pride before 2010!)

The theme for this year’s festival is #AllTogetherNow – in a time where our community is being rounded up in Chechnya, denied our existence in Russia, and being challenged in America; it is even more important we, along with our allies, stand together as one. No matter your sexuality, gender, race, belief or however you identify – we are #AllTogetherNow. We continue to grow with our partners, as we welcome back Barclays as our headline sponsor as well as Manchester Airport, Mayor Of Liverpool and Homes For Everyone as Main Sponsors. Our journey with Barclays knows no bounds as they continue to support us all year round, building on their shared growth ambition to work within our communities and be more than just a bank. Proving that #LoveGoesTheDistance. As always, we start each festival with the Liverpool Pride March, inviting notable keynote speakers to bring their experiences and inspirational words to our march participants – energising everyone before we take our message to the streets. We invite everyone to march with us, to do so visit www.liverpoolpride.co.uk/march-registration. On Saturday, we have three stages lined up to be our most diverse yet, headlined by Sophie Ellis Bextor, alongside International Drag Star, and Celebrity Big Brother winner, Courtney Act, the cast of Kinky Boots and so many more. We are excited to bring the Manchester Airport San Francisco Stage. Curated by the Liverpool Queer Collective, this cabaret stage will bring something different to our programme and is not to be missed!

Liverpool Pride Sundae will see cultural events with an LGBT+ focus across the city, with our hub being centred within the Bluecoat. Expect the return of our youth dance arena that was such a hit in 2017, that we couldn’t NOT bring it back! Tate Exchange will host Liverpool Pride: Producing Equality, from 16th – 22nd July, our Pride Volunteers will be on hand to demonstrate the excitement and commitment with which people across our region create a Pride festival. Art banners from Oliver Bliss, Brian D Hanlon, Sophie Green and Ben Youdan will be on display throughout the week as well as weekend workshops giving you the opportunity to create your own! Also on display will be a selection of photography and moving image captured throughout Liverpool Pride’s history. Come Out of the Shadows returns for its third year with even more iconic buildings lighting up in rainbow colours to display their support for the LGBT+ community and raise awareness for hate crime across the region. The Pride Team would like to give special thanks to the Mayor of Liverpool and Culture Liverpool for their incredible on going support and advice throughout the planning process for 2018’s festival. We look to the future and the growth of that relationship. As always, Liverpool Pride would not be possible without the support of our dedicated team of volunteers, and those who help us in different ways, over the last 9 years. We would be nothing without you! On behalf of the Liverpool Pride team, we would like to welcome you to our 2018 festival, and invite you to have a fan-tabulous, fun and safe time celebrating equality, diversity, and strength for the LGBT+ community locally, and around the world!

Andi Herring and John Bird - Liverpool Pride Co-Chairs Our cover artwork features 10 daisies in memory of the 10 years since Michael Causer’s death.

COME OUT OF THE SHADOWS CHALLENGING HATE CRIME • 19th JULY 2018 to 2nd AUGUST 2018 Shining a light on diversity, Liverpool Pride yet again illunates Liverpool’s iconic skyline with rainbow colours that cascaded over prominent buildings and structures raising awareness of LGBT+ communities and hate crime. This colourful display promotes unity and acceptance and underpins the 2018 theme; #ALLTOGETHERNOW, sending clear messages locally, nationally and internationally that the Liverpool City Region is visibly LGBT+ friendly and proud to be diverse. Recognising the strength of this approach the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, Barclays Bank and other partners continue to contribute towards the initiative whilst Liverpool Pride engages and invites new organisations to show their support by participating in future campaigns. Supporting Liverpool Pride, Michael Carey explained, “Liverpool Pride Trustee’s again show their commitment to raising awareness around LGBT+ hate crimes through the Come out the Shadows initiative, which creates a highly visible and instantly recognisable public display. By showering our region and architecture in rainbow colours we become a beacon of hope for other countries and send a global message that our region embraces diversity and is respectful of all it’s people. In this anniversary year, we ask people to stop, take notice and for a moment remember, reflect and simply be proud of who you are.” Launched in 2016, last year’s Come out of the Shadows received support from 46 iconic buildings and structures that lit up across the city region including civic buildings, bridges, businesses, advertising boards, bus shelters, museums, theatres and sporting venues. A proud and historic highlight was lighting the Liver Birds in rainbow colours, which for many was a notable and symbolic achievement. Sat proudly atop the Royal Liver Building at the Pier Head, one facing inwards protecting the people and the other outwards looking across the River for prosperity, this radiated acceptance right from the heart of the City. Ultimately, this campaign enables the Liverpool City Region to show itself, both inwardly and outwardly, as inclusive and diverse whilst educating and normalising LGBT+ in all its forms helping to make our region a safer place for all LGBT+ residents and visitors. The approach is subtle, powerful yet unavoidable. It raises interest, attracts news coverage and encourages debate. It equally seeks to embrace and nurture our own communities, especially those who may themselves be victims of hate crime by giving them the strength and encouragement to tell a friend, report it to the police or contact a professional helpline, such as Stop Hate Crime UK (0800 138 1625) who have championed this campaign from the start. It is widely understood that LGBT+ hate crime across the UK often go unreported, which means people could still be suffering in silence and arguably the true depth of this problem remains unknown.

4

Looking forward to 2018 many of the regions most famous and recognisable buildings have already pledged their support again including; St George’s Hall, Liverpool Central Library, FACT, Royal Court Theatre, Everyman, Playhouse, Merseyside Police, all Local Authorities and Barclays Bank. Discussions remain ongoing and the full list of participants will be released through local press and social media channels. This year our lights will shine brighter, stronger and longer in remembrance of murdered teenager Michael Causer who tragically died on 2nd August 2008 following a homophobic attack. Attracting both national attention and local unrest, the city regions LGBT+ community responded by launching Liverpool’s own Pride Festival and the Causer family created the Michael Causer Foundation, which provides supported accommodation for vulnerable LGBT people in the North West of England. So this year our message is delivered with pride and a heavy heart as we respect and remember the 10th Anniversary of Michael’s death. Come out of the Shadows will launch on 19th July and will illuminate the region until 2nd August. Please make sure to keep an eye open for the campaign and as always take photographs and share and tweet them to send our message far and wide. Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “I am delighted to be supporting Liverpool Pride’s Come Out of the Shadows campaign for the third year running. This is a fantastic initiative, which sends out a powerful message that Merseyside is diverse, Merseyside is tolerant and Merseyside supports its LGBTQI community. “It is a source of great pride to see the support which shines right across the City Region when our most prominent and recognisable buildings light up with the rainbow flag – from Anfield to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the Everyman to the Echo arena. It demonstrates that discrimination, abuse and hate will not be tolerated here. I hope this year will see even more venues and organisations join this visible campaign celebrating equality and diversity.” Sitting under the Come out of the Shadows umbrella and premiering this year, Liverpool Pride is also proud to announce the release of two short films produced with Collective Encounters that explore hate crime through the eyes of our community. Working with young people who either identify as LGBT+ or Non-LGBT+ the first film invited both groups to examine and challenge hate crime and bullying whilst trying to better understand their differences. Whilst, the second film provided a platform for the local trans community to express their thoughts, feelings and fears around acceptance and hate crime. Funded by the High Sheriffs, Merseyside Police and Charitable Fund and BBC Children in Need, each film will undoubtedly initiate wider debate whilst providing a unique perspective from often unheard local voices on how hate crime really affects us. Both films will be available over social media during the Pride Festival, before being shared with local partners for wider educational purposes.

#AllTogetherNow for the Liverpool Tritons means that no matter your sexuality, race or size. We are a family that rucks together. Liverpool Tritons

For me, #AllTogetherNow is about a sense of family and community. It is about finding people who you can relate to in the world, who also celebrate every part of you and how you express yourself. As a woman who works in a male-dominated drag scene, it amazes me how accepting and welcoming Liverpool is of me, and that they understand my art. I love my biological family and my drag family, because they are both real family to me. Togetherness is a bond not easily broken, and Liverpool has a history of people coming together when times get tough. We need to celebrate Liverpool’s togetherness, and Pride is one of the ways we can do that.

HOW TO FIND US We recommend using public transport to get to the festival. The main festival site will be located on Tithebarn Street. COACH The National Express coach station is situated in Liverpool ONE bus station. Liverpool ONE bus station is a 12 minute walk from the festival site

PLANE #AllTogetherNow to me means community - the people who make up the LGBTQ+ community and who stand together under the rainbow flag are awesome, talented, kind, mischievous and curious people. They are people from all walks of life. I stand with this community to demand equality for all - especially in these difficult times, when the gains in rights, won by our forefathers & foremothers, could so easily be taken away. #AllTogetherNow

Fly in to Manchester Airport or Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Bus and coach links available from both airports to Liverpool ONE bus station. Train links from the airport’s run to Liverpool Lime Street Station.

FERRY Please visit merseyferries.co.uk Travel from the Wirral by Mersey Ferry or River Explorer Cruise. Free parking available at Seacombe Ferry Terminal. Ferry Terminal is a 12 minute walk from the festival site.

MICHAEL CAUSER VIGIL Thursday 2 August, 6pm Temple Square Gardens Michael Causer was a young man of just 18, whose life was taken just because he was gay. The Michael Causer Foundation was set up by his parents, Marie and Mike, and Merseyside’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. Their aim, to provide education, motivation and accommodation for young LGBT people like their son. Ahead of the tenth anniversary of Michael’s death, the foundation has planted million’s of daisy seeds as a tribute to the teenager described by his family as their “little sweetheart”. The seeds will be planted at Liverpool Parish Church, known locally as St Nick’s. Eventually the foundation hopes the seeds can be planted across Liverpool in tribute to Michael. We are pleased to be recognised and supported by Liverpool Pride in this 10th year since Michael’s death let’s keep making a difference. We will be holding the Michael Causer Vigil on August 2nd on the 10th anniversary - please do try to come along and support against hater crime AND in Michael’s memory.

MESSAGE FROM

MERSEYSIDE POLICE

RECRUITMENT INFORMATION

I am extremely proud that Merseyside Police are part of Liverpool Pride. Our involvement has gone from strength to strength from 12 of us in 2010 to the huge contingent you all saw last year. This is entrenched in our calendar and we look forward to it each year. It is a privilege for me to lead our contingent each year and the experience is always a proud moment for me. To have the honour of addressing the crowds and sharing our key messages with you all is a fantastic opportunity and I look forward to seeing you all again this year. I see it as critical that I stand shoulder to shoulder with my staff and my communities during this celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender lives, especially when I know this is not the case in some other countries Please come and speak to us, ask questions, have a photograph taken, come and see our Police with Pride car and perhaps you may see a career with Merseyside Police as a result. We are involved in the operational Policing side of many large events however Pride affords us a unique opportunity to show our communities that we are proud to be an LGBT+ inclusive organisation, that there are LGBT+ police/staff all proud to serve our diverse communities, but just as important, there are allies who march with us in solidarity and with Pride. It is important that we take this opportunity to show our stance against discrimination, Transphobia, Homophobia and all forms of Hate whilst at the same time I want my LGBT+ staff to know that being themselves is what creates a truly diverse workplace where difference is welcome and valued. Andy Cooke QPM Chief Constable | Merseyside Police

#ALLTOGETHERNOW

MARK MCLANE, BARCLAYS GLOBAL HEAD OF DIVERSITY & INCLUSION. Tell us about your role? Being the head of Diversity and Inclusion is about being able to architect solutions for our organisation based on the changing needs of a more and more diverse colleague community. The only way to successfully devise those solutions is to listen to our colleagues, just like the business runs customer focus groups and then delivers product based on the voice of the customer, we run colleague focus groups called listening groups and then design programs intended to make Barclays a more inclusive employer based on the voice of the colleague.

Why should companies be interested in Diversity and equality? Being diverse and inclusive is key to the success of any organisation. Having a more diverse pool of talent, enables us to grow and learn from people who we might not otherwise engage with, had we been less diverse or inclusive. Having diverse ideas and opinions, often leads to good debate and quite frankly, makes for better decisions. Being part of an organisation that puts D&I at the heart of what they do, enables everyone to feel like an equal at work, which in turn drives confidence, creativity and productivity. For me, this can only be a good thing - it’s certainly good for business.

Barclays are a great supporter of Pride, but this year seems different. Why is that? As one of the UK’s largest banks, we have around 24 million customers and support almost one million UK businesses - and many of these are based outside of London. In addition to being the Headline Sponsor of Pride in London, we knew it was important to show our support more widely than that, which is why this year, there will be Barclays colleague presence at over 20 Pride events across the UK, and we will be partnering 5. Taking this approach enables us to spread this positive message beyond the Capital to our colleagues, customers and clients across the UK.

Why Liverpool ? Our relationship with Liverpool Pride has been driven by our colleagues on Merseyside, so we’ve been hearing wonderful things about Pride there. We’re one of the largest employers in the region and we see Liverpool as an important hub for our UK business. Additionally, the city has a range of unique attractions, unrivalled music heritage and famously warm people. For us, Liverpool was a stand-out choice of Headline Sponsorship.

“Love Goes The Distance” is a great theme, what does it mean and why did Barclays choose to create that message this year? To bring our nationwide approach to Pride this year to life, we are running a #lovegoesthedistance campaign across all of the events which aims to celebrate the wealth of significant and ground-breaking progress made by the LGBT+ community over the years, however also to highlight that there is still further to go in driving greater equality. We’ll be bringing our campaign to life at all the Prides we can so look out for us!

One of the first stages to feature men dressed as women was the Rival Theatre, run by Americo Leal, grandfather of the director. They bravely challenged rigid morality at the height of a military dictatorship, and created a defining moment in the struggle for human rights and individual freedom in the Brazil of yesterday and today. LIVERPOOL PRIDE MARCH Theme: #AllTogetherNow YOUR time to shine!

Year on year, the Liverpool Pride march grows and grows, bringing the ever busy streets of Liverpool City Centre to a halt. We invite EVERYONE to march with us - whoever you are, whatever you do, and wherever you come from - let’s march #AllTogetherNow. What does #AllTogetherNow mean for the March? In the past, our themes have given a clear directive as to how attendees can dress up, if they so wish to dress up, #AllTogetherNow is no different. The theme for 2018 allows for every individual, every community, every group, to welcome each other with open arms, embracing each others’ differences, each others’ similarities and celebrate how far we have come, but knowing how far we have yet to climb. Step outside of your comfort zone and celebrate other cultures, identities, passions and ideologies. We want as many people as possible to march on Saturday 28th July - register at www.liverpoolpride.co.uk/march-registration and bring all your families, friends and colleagues!

Meet Natalie. She’s 22. She supports her mum as a carer and we support her. She’s not your average Joe. And this isn’t your average apprenticeship. As a carer, you build qualities any employer should treasure. Empathy. Patience. Determination. But even so, we know that breaking back into work can be difficult. That’s why our Apprenticeships only look for potential – just like we found in Natalie, current Higher Apprentice. Find out how we can help at joinus.barclays.com/apprenticeships

For more about Open Table:

Join Liverpool Queer Collective for an afternoon of storytelling for adults. One thing that many LGBTQ+ people have in common is the moment that they ‘came out’; it’s what sets us apart and brings us together and for many it’s a crucial moment of freedom but also of acceptance or rejection. Be touched and entertained by real stories told by Liverpool’s LGBTQ+ people at this intimate event. Free entry, booking essential at: www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/liverpool-queercollective-16979992713

Liverpool Pride is, and should be, a day for all LGBT+ people and our allies to come together to stand up and be counted. So, for me, #AllTogetherNow is a clarion call for us to do that and then also to carry it forward into our daily lives. We are stronger together.

Claire Rice

All together now signifies not only the LGBTQIA+ community being able to come together for a weekend of Pride in Liverpool but also how important the support from our Hetro and Cis Allies is not just on Pride days but in everyday life. It also encompases how much we have unified as one community and how we have overcome the oppression we have faced over the years to be able to celebrate the now whilst pushing still for a better future.

Mel Underwood, Liverpool Queer Collective

#AllTogetherNow, for us, means that we share the fun, and the fight, the laughs and the tears, we share the history and the future #AllTogetherNow means that we stand in solidarity for equality.Â

Jeneen & Luna Schofield
