10 things you didn't know about...

1. Francis Scott Key,

composer of the "The Star-Spangled Banner," was Fitzgerald’s second cousin three times removed and was the writer’s namesake.

2. Fitzgerald’s mother

loved to show the little boy off when company called in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was known to wear a Little Lord Fauntleroy suit and recite poetry.

3. Fitzgerald’s first piece

of writing appeared in print when he was only thirteen. It was a detective story published in the school newspaper.

American author (1896-1940) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to an upper middle class Irish Catholic family. He penned four complete novels and various short stories during his lifetime, establishing himself as one of the most celebrated authors of the twentieth century. Together with his wife Zelda, he become an icon of the Jazz Age (a term he in fact coined) and an integral member of the 1920s “Lost Generation.”

He used excerpts from Zelda’s personal diary in the novel.

known title today is The Great Gatsby, during his lifetime it was in fact This Side of Paradise that was best-selling and most critically acclaimed.

last three years of his life as a scriptwriter in Hollywood where he lived with his lover, gossip columnist Sheilah Graham.

They’re perfect for your man or better yet, the tomboy chic Matchbook girl! We chatted with the head of Coach’s men’s division, the ever dapper Greg Unis, for the inside scoop.

What drew COACH to the work of Hugo Guinness?

The team loved Hugo's take on the world and the wit and whimsy he brings

to everything he does.

A boxer, handcuffs, NYC coffee cups -- what was the inspiration for the collection?

Hugo was inspired by a few things--New York, which is his adopted hometown, and the everyday objects we might not pay attention to.

How did the design process work?

The process was very collaborative. Hugo spent time with our men's design team and there was a lot of great back and forth. The team has a lot of respect for Hugo as an artist, so they enjoyed the process very much.

Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?

The NYC coffee cup.

What do you enjoy most about working at Coach?

Obviously, the opportunity to work with people like Hugo Guinness is pretty up there. It's also exciting to be working on the men's business. Men's is a big focus for Coach and it's a growing category. Men are starting to care about style and what kind of bags they carry in a way they never did before.

What fashion trends are you most looking forward to this spring?

I love that color is more important than ever.

We are launching the Bleecker Stripe collection in April and it's a great combination of color, functionality and style.

Some of the bags in that collection are even reversible, like the Hugo totes.

What are three things every Matchbook boy should carry with him?

A proper wallet, preferably monogrammed, a Metrocard and a Swiss Army Knife. And it should all be contained within a great Coach tote. matchbook

n March 8th Matchbook girls around the world will rush to their nearest H&M (or log onto H&M.com!) to scoop up the brand’s design collaboration with Italian fashion label Marni. The collection was spearheaded by Marni’s creative director and founder, Consuelo Castiglioni. Known for its quirky play on pattern and color, the wallet-friendly line boasts everything from

funky silk pajamas suits to lilac gold brocade leggings. As research Consuelo revisited the company’s design archive to create “a true Marni wardrobe” using many of their signature fabrics and prints. Film darling Sofia Coppola was recruited to direct a campaign film for the charmingly offbeat collection.

Set in Marrakech, Morocco it makes the clothes dazzle against lush surroundings.

Our suggestion for March 8th?

by Eowyn Ivey (Little, Brown, and Co., $25) Eowyn Ivey’s breathtaking debut novel is one part Russian fairytale and one part Alaskan nature saga.

A childless couple, Jack and Mabel, move from back East to start their life over in the rugged wilds of Alaska in the 1920s. In their loneliness they build a child out of snow and the next day find the young girl Faina appear in its place.

No one is able to make sense of this child from seemingly nowhere, but her reality is even stranger 28

than fairytales. The couple struggles with the problems of this wild child and Ivey plays the tension of this relationship like a master writer. The Snow Child is a rewarding and engrossing read.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank by Nathan Englander (Knopf, $25) Nathan Englander’s short story collection, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, has been met with a chorus of praise since its arrival and it’s no wonder why. The stories are brave and often funny, whether they are taking on the history of the state of Israel as in “Silent Hills” or an old folks camp filled with elderly vigilantes in “Camp Sundown.”

While his stories often revolve around Jeweish identity, the themes and heart of the work are universal. Pain and confusion abound in this collection as Englander proves that the once dying art of the short story is definitely back.

I can even make the conference calls from R29’s New York office sound a little clearer.

Instagram, Free We cover a good amount of new apps on R29 SF, but there’s nothing I’m more addicted to than the locally based Instagram. I think after producing so many words each day, it’s much more relaxing to just flick through my friends’ pretty and personal in-the-moment pictures than read through their Twitter feeds. SportWatch GPS, Nike, $199 Although I wish most of my time was spent hitting the S.F. pavement looking for story leads, a lot of my work happens plopped firmly behind my desk for hours and hours...and hours...on end. To help make sure I’m at least attempting to meet my fitness goals, I like fancy tech-savvy watches like my Nike+ SportWatch with GPS that reads my sneakers and charts my runs.

Retro Handset In Blue, Yubz, $50 I’m definitely a little scarred of how much time I spend with my iPhone glued to my head. Therefore, investing in one of these retro-cool handsets in my favorite color — blue! — helps ease some of that fear. Alice’s Tea Cup LUNCH BOX

lice’s Tea Cup, the tea and pastry chainlette founded by sisters Lauren and Haley Fox, was created in a poof of glistening fairy dust--fitting for a shop named after famous children’s fairytale Alice in Wonderland.

During their first week of business in December 2001, Haley and Lauren took to “dusting” their customers both big and small with glitter as they embarked on their journey “down the rabbit hole,” as Lauren affectionately calls teatime at Alice’s.

“We wore sparkles all the time. Everyone who worked

describe the experience as “very pinky up.” At Alice’s the girls pay homage to the pomp and ceremony that accompanies a hotel tea.

Customers at Alice’s can opt to receive a Mad Hatter tea platter and big parties can choose from a panoply of palm readers, tarot readers, face painters, and even a live Alice in Wonderland (Lauren has been known to fill in in a pinch), who will sit and share your meal with you while reading excerpts from Lewis Carroll.

That said, there are no white tablecloths here and the teatime sandwiches at Alice’s are not of the crustless cucumber variety. The menu, designed to satiate, boasts hearty helpings of food inspired by the girls’ favorites teas, such as lapsang souchong smoked chicken breast and chopped tea-egg salad (the eggs are infused with mate tea). Delightful and whimsical as the meal options may be, Alice’s is most famous for scones.

Make sure you don’t leave the restaurant without one.

They’re cakey and delicious and more like a perfectly crafted muffin-scone hybrid than anything typically associated with “scone.”

On any given day there are five to six different varieties.

The day we ate there, the menu offered Alice’s famous pumpkin scone, a mixed berry version, as well as buttermilk, ham and cheese and chocolate and salted caramel. It was Lauren who first discovered the scone recipe. She then passed it along to their founding chef and sous chef, Julie Taras and Tasha Garcia, who refined and adapted the recipe for the restaurant. Taras and Garcia later moved on to

found cozy downtown eateries Little Giant and Tipsy Parson.

Alice’s, like every good children’s fairytale, has a fairy godmother. New York Times editor Florence Fabricant took an early interest in theshop during the buildout stage, and the day Alice’s doors opened for business the New York Times ran a half-page story on the front of its Metro section. The store opened with a line out the door and around the

“We had to get through the holidays,” Lauren says, recalling their early success.

“And I remember going through one insane day and I was cleaning up and I was alone here. There was music playing on our stereo.

The Cat Stevens song “The Wind” came on. I started to smile and dance around the room. I realized ‘wow, we did this.’ We created something really big that we didn’t even know we were creating. It was an incredible feeling. Just that this is ours.”

In 2010 the girls developed a cookbook published by HarperCollins, allowing Alice’s ardent fans and regulars to create many of the well-loved recipes in the comfort of their homes. The two are working on a second cookbook proposal that they’ll submit this year.

Mixed Berry Scone Recipe 3 CUPS ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR 1/3 CUP SUGAR ½ TEASPOON BAKING SODA 2½ TEASPOONS BAKING POWDER ¾ TEASPOON KOSHER SALT ¾ CUP UNSALTED BUTTER, CUT INTO ½-INCH PIECES ½ CUP BLUEBERRIES ½ CUP RASPBERRIES ½ CUP BL ACKBERRIES ¼ CUP STRAWBERRIES, QUARTERED 1¼ CUPS BUTTERMILK 1 TEASPOON VANILL A EXTRACT ¼ CUP HEAVY CREAM (FOR BRUSHING) ¼ CUP SUGAR (FOR SPRINKLING)

Preheat the oven to 400º.

In a large mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients.

With clean hands, work the butter into the dry mix until it is thoroughly incorporated and the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add all of the berries and combine well so the berries are evenly distributed throughout the dry mix.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the buttermilk and vanilla extract into the center. Combine the ingredients until all dry mix is wet, but do not knead!

Turn the mixture out onto a floured surface and gather the dough together. Gently pat into a rectangle about 1½ inches thick. Using a dough cutter, cut the scones into wedges about 3½ inches by 4 inches by 4 inches and lay on a non-stick baking sheet. Lightly gather remaining dough together to cut out more scones, but don’t knead the dough too much.

Brush the tops of each scone liberally with heavy cream and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake at 400º for about 12 minutes. Yield: 10-12 Scones matchbook

A

t first glance C. Z. Guest may seem like any other WASP-y blue-eyed socialite, but dig deeper and you’ll quickly find the perfectly-coifed blonde was in fact proof that looks can be deceiving.

Born in 1920 to Boston’s prominent Cochrane family, Lucy Douglas grew up with four siblings on the family’s North Shore estate.

Her brother Alexander took to calling her “sissy,” which eventually became C. Z., and over time the nickname stuck. After her society debut in 1937, the spirited Miss Cochrane took a less conventional route than her fellow debs and became a showgirl.

Though her stage career was short-lived, the pretty C. Z. did appear on Broadway in the 1944 revival of Ziegfeld Follies.

About this time the young New Englander also traveled to Mexico City, where, in keeping with her taste for rebellion, she posed nude for legendary Mexican artist Diego Rivera. (Later she would model for Dali and Warhol.)

Rumor has it Rivera’s painting hung in a Mexico City bar until her future fiancé’s

family bought it for safe keeping. Oh, the scandal!

And who managed to win the heart of this daring debutante? His name was Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, and he just so happened to be a polo champion and heir to a vast steel fortune. In 1947, C. Z. and Winston tied the knot in Havana, Cuba at the home of Winston’s best man, Ernest Hemingway.

Though she clearly excelled in fashion and entertaining, C. Z. most notably dedicated her life to two great passions: horses and horticulture. She was an avid equestrian and it was while recovering from a riding accident in 1976 that she began writing about gardening. Her words evolved into her first book, First Garden, which included contributions from close friends Cecil Beaton (illustrations) and Truman Capote (the forward). A horticulture enthusiast, C. Z. went on to pen several more titles on the subject as well as a weekly gardening column that was published nationwide.

Life for the new bride was just getting started. In no time C. Z. established herself as an internationally admired hostess. Lunch guests included Estée Lauder, Elsa Maxwell, Babe Paley, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (who became the godparents of the Guest’s two children, Cornelia and Alexander). C. Z. received praise for her classic American style, snagging several highly-coveted spots on Eleanor Lambert’s International Best Dressed List and a permanent place in the Hall of Fame in 1959. She favored tailored looks by the likes of Mainbocher and Givenchy that flattered her pale complexion and sporty, trim figure. Never one to succumb

When C. Z. passed away at home in Old Westbury, New York at the ripe age of 83, she had created a new standard of American style and class. Here was a woman equally at ease digging in dirt as she was dining with the Maharaja of Jaipur. Hers was a life of passion, curiosity, and purpose. Though she acted with grace, C. Z. Guest was never afraid to flirt with adventure.

Since 1936 both style and comfort have been integral to the company’s memorable designs. To find out how they accomplished this pairing, we sat down for a chat with the company namesake, Jacques Levine, and his grandson, Sam Calvino. It’s the legacy that drives me. When I saw that Schiaparelli’s design house had selected us to make their footwear, it made me immensely proud. It also motivates me to think of where we can go in future collections. I have old designs and samples from the Schiaparelli line, and while they aren’t right for us at the moment, I can’t wait to start reintroducing styles from that period. matchbook

Your family’s company was also among the first to import espadrilles from Spain.

Have you always been trendsetters?

I don’t think the company was driven by a sense of finding the next trend, but by a passion for making and designing new shoes. My grandfather tells me that some of our company’s best years were actually during the depression. While other footwear manufacturers were operating very conservatively, we were experimenting with colors and sandal constructions that the market hadn’t seen.

What do you admire most about your grandparents, Jacques and Florence?

I think it’s their sense of purpose and balance. Everything they did had such intent. There was a way to dress, a way to host a family dinner, a way to operate within your community.

And yet, despite their high expectations, there was still a deep appreciation for trying your best. They were also both great story tellers.

Your brand has many loyal customers. How 48

We snapped the San Francisco style maven in a few favorite springtime looks and sat down to discuss classics with a twist, day trips along the coast, and that impressive shoe collection...

How did you fall into personal style blogging?

Falling is certainly a great way to put it! I started This Time Tomorrow almost three years ago on a whim. At the time, I was attending college and working at a local newspaper as a reporter covering daily news and writing feature stories for the Arts & Entertainment

section. I've always loved the pace of a newsroom and how it forced me to write on a daily basis. So when my internship was almost up and with college graduation looming, I knew I needed to find another writing outlet. Since fashion has always been a huge interest of mine, starting a personal style blog seemed like a natural fit (and one that might help justify my growing shoe collection!).

I typically struggle with this question because I like to think I'm continuously defining my style as I go. What do your coworkers at Google think about your often vibrant outfits?

I work with some pretty like-minded and stylish ladies, so my five-inch heels aren’t out of the ordinary in our office. In general, Google is a very easy-going and accepting place to work, which is one of the biggest reasons why I love my job.

What are you most looking forward to about spring?

Perhaps what I love most about living in the Bay Area is our proximity to so many great scenic destinations, from wine country to some great hiking trails. On the first sunny spring weekend, you can find me heading out for a drive along the coast, making sure to duck into some quaint restaurants along the way.

Which spring trends are you most anxious to try?

So many to choose from!

Top of my list? I'd have to say bold f loral prints, matchy-matchy pastel suits and, although it's been going strong for a while, pajama dressing.

And maybe a peplum top thrown in for good measure.

Did you grow up in a big family?

I’m the youngest of five and my husband is the second oldest of seven, so we knew we wanted a lot of kids. I probably didn’t register being the mother of all those kids is a lot of work!

And did you always want to work in design?

Thinking back on it, I was always rearranging my furniture. Even before my husband and I bought our first building or got married, we were buying architectural windows and doors--things we knew one day we would build into something. We have that shared passion.

And how many years have you and Robert been together now?

Twenty-two years. We’ve been married for sixteen years.

Impressive to say the least. Between your career and your family, you have a lot going on at once. How do you manage to stay so calm and collected?

My husband--it helps to have a good partner. I have amazing help, support for our business, and babysit-

ters. There are hard days, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I enjoy waking up every day because I enjoy what I’m doing. It keeps evolving. Our core is doing what we love. Nothing has been so devastating that we can’t overcome it.

You seem so at home here in New York. When did you first move here?

In 1992. We have been here over twenty years.

Quite some time! What do you love most about it?

I feel like I was born a New Yorker. I love everything about the city even on a bad day because you are fully living. The city streets, the people--I get inspired every day. There is an energy here that is like no other place.

You also like to travel.

You have another home abroad, right?

We ended up buying a house in Brazil, which we rent out. Or we will house swap and go somewhere else, like Italy. We come back refreshed and realize that New York City is big, but small at the same time.

You have to see how other people live to come back with new ideas. So we check out and go overseas for a month.

When you’re traveling do you shop? What are your favorite things to shop for?

Usually if I go to a thrift store I buy vintage jewelry along with a vintage chair.

I really like jewelry--not necessarily diamonds, but something that has lived before.

Well put. How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is pretty relaxed most of the time just because I have seven kids. I don’t like to be over done, I wear more fun necklaces as opposed earrings because the little ones will pull on my ears. I don’t get too dolled up, but I do like to be girly and feminine.

I love your bracelets.

Is there a story behind them?

My bracelets are from Brazil. They are called wish bracelets. You put them on when a store keeper gives them to you or you go to a dinner party and someone puts them around you, and you make a wish. When they fall off your wish comes true.

Let’s shift gears and chat about the new show. What are you loving most about it?

That HGTV is letting us do what we want, which is exposing people to art. An art collection isn’t just for wealthy people. We’re letting people realize that they can have an art collection whatever it is--a cool funky chair or a photograph or a painting.

Do you tend to follow design rules or go with your gut?

There are no rules. We never even went to design school, so if they are out there we are breaking them.

It is your house so decorate it the way you want to. Buy unique pieces--if it speaks to you somehow then it will look good in your home.

And you’ve designed a lot of homes! How many places have you lived in here in New York?

We have built twelve homes in lower Manhattan, but we have lived in between in temporary apartments, maybe twenty times, adding children along the way.

I can’t even imagine. So you are always looking for the next place?

Yes, the house we are in now is on the market; if it sells we will do it again.

We have a couple places in mind...We just try not to overextend ourselves.

Last but not least, care to share one of your secrets to living a charmed life?

I think people should entertain more--have people over.

If you think you can’t have live music, you can afford it. If you are in the city, get a subway player, feed them dinner and give them some wine, and you have live music at your party. We have done that. Think differently. Do potluck dinners and have your friends bring great dishes. I’m not a great cook, but my friends are!

This spring she and her husband George are moving to Atlanta in time for the arrival of their first baby. Pardon our stating the obvious, but you have killer maternity style.

What advice do you have for the stylish mommy-to-be?

It’s kind of counter-intuitive, but the tighter the better! It’s such a fun time to show off your little bump. I have short shift dresses in my closet that I used to think I had to be in great shape to wear and now I can wear them with conf idence! I don’t want to dress completely differently from how I normally would, so I’m pulling out my maxi dresses and making it work!

Pearl is great. And I always go to Cynthia Rowley for something fun for an art event. They’re my go-to for something a little more funky! And then I always go vintage shopping when I’m out of town. I’m in New York three times a year and I have lots of cute and stylish friends there who keep me on top of my game!

You were raised in Atlanta, moved to Charleston to attend college, and now plan to move back to your hometown in May. What do you love most about both cities?

Charleston is just so quaint; I love the size of it and the fact that you can walk everywhere.

Everyone here is young; Charleston has become this little southeastern mecca for creative businesses. Moving to Atlanta will be a new chapter.

There’s so much we’re going to miss, but it’s time to try something new. And we’re really excited to be closer to my family!

If you’ve got it, f launt it! Do you like getting dressed up or is your style more laid back?

I always try to have one good quality piece mixed with whatever is most comfortable. I’m always looking to Celine and Chloe for inspiration—my style can be very nude on nude on white on nude. I like to have special occasions where I can really have fun and get dolled up, but I don’t do it on a daily basis—that’s just the nature Just in time for your new baby! of what I do.

food and art scene in Atlanta. A lot of my good friends are in the restaurant business or into organic farming and I love to be part of that culture.

Being a bigger city, Atlanta has a great art scene, which is def initely stimulating for me.

Speaking of the art scene, we are absolutely enamored with your work! Tell us about some of your creative inf luences.

Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, all the color f ield painters...oh, and photography! Massimo Vitali, I just absolutely love him. Photography is def initely starting to inf luence me a lot more.

Then I’m inspired by blogs—all the inspiration boards, the fashion!—and textiles and travel. We’ve traveled to Florence (I was a total Renaissance art history dork in college!) and Mexico. There are so many sides of inspiration for me: happy tropical places, girly francophilia, ‘70s rock and roll, and a preppy side. I wish I could be in all of those places at once. That’s why my art can be all over the place!

your proudest moment as an artist?

I’m most proud when I’m by myself in my studio and I f inish something that I really love. If I spend money to frame something, that’s a proud moment. It means I’m committing to keeping it, and I don’t keep a lot of things!

I love that! Are you able to paint every day?

My typical day starts with sleeping in a little, answering emails with a cup of tea, wearing my robe, and loving life. My studio is walking distance, but I always drive because it seems I’m constantly lugging things around. Then from there it’s pretty unplanned. I listen to music

and I’m usually working on a couple paintings in the same room. I sit and stare at them a lot, prop them up on the mantel, and live with them for a little. I’ll go meet my husband for lunch, then I’ll read a little...I’m running in and out all day!

They do say variety is the spice of life. Are you mostly painting for clients or for yourself?

It’s all about balance.

Sometimes I’ll have clients who fell in love with a piece that sold two years ago. I want them to have a piece they love, but it’s hard to go back to that place! But it’s really fun to see the f inished product; it makes it feel like

a team effort. It’s important for me to do my own work in addition to commissions or else I’d lose my ammunition, my creative direction. Working for myself is more freeing, more loose.

Last, but not least... this issue is Matchbook’s field guide to spring. What do you love about this season?

Def initely the wardrobe change! The weather in Charleston is just insanely beautiful. It’s boating weather! And we go to the beach all the time. The start of the year is always tough for me—spring is like pulling off the bandaid!

From what she would have worn to Truman Capote’s iconic Black and White Ball to her career’s greatest motivation, we got the full scoop.

This place is stunning!

Did you grow up in a mid-century modern home?

My parents had Danish modern furniture, but I wouldn’t say they were hardcore modernists. My mom is Japanese and we definitely had a lot of Japanese things in our home.

That aesthetic obviously has a lot to do with mid-century modernism. Even this house, I think, has a really Japanese feel to it.

To whom or what do you attribute your wildly colorful aesthetic?

Growing up in California in the ‘60s and ‘70s, aesthetically it was a colorful time.

People wore a lot of color.

There was a lot of color in interior design as well. I don’t think I was aware of it as a kid, but it definitely seeped in. My mom was an extremely creative person and made everything. She made all of our clothes, she made drapes, she even made Christmas decorations. My dad was kind of a culture snob. He would rather have gone to a national park than to Disneyland. So, we took a lot of family trips involving nature, and that’s where the best colors are--particularly in California, where you have close access to the 114

mountains, the ocean, and the desert.

I think it was finally realizing that I wasn’t getting any younger, and so I had to go for it...

I was inspired by the notion of, “Can I really pull this off?” I’m still inspired by that idea every single day.

What is on your decor wish list?

I saw a prototype of an hourglass-shape brass table while at Jonathan Adler’s house in Shelter Island, New York. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to produce it! So, that’s one thing that I’m currently coveting. But most of the time, we just find stuff. You’ll never find the brass table for your library when you go out in search of one. You’ll find it on the day that you’re searching for, say, a lamp.

Since we didn’t work with a decorator at our house, our home has been an evolution.

Is there one interior that you can’t get enough of?

My favorite home is the Irwin Miller residence in Indiana. The architect was Eero Saarinen, and Alexander Girard designed the interior. It’s a mix of cool, modernist architecture, ethnic textiles, and objects and splashes of color that add up to an amazing space. It’s perfection! I’d love to move right in.

You took a big leap of faith when you began your company in 1995.

What made you take the plunge?

At the time, I had been working for twelve years as a designer at various companies. In the back of my mind, I always wondered if I should try to start my own line. My husband, Jonathan, was so sick of hearing about it. He would always say, “Just quit your job and do it!” I think it was finally realizing that I wasn’t getting any younger, and so I had to go for it. I thought, "Worstcase scenario it won't work out, but at least I’ll have something interesting to put on my resume!" Also, I was inspired by the notion of, “Can I really pull this off ?”

I’m still inspired by that idea every single day.

When was your first “pinch me” moment?

You know, I think it was when we opened our first store in Palm Springs in March 2002. Up until then, we were only selling to department stores and specialty boutiques. Having the opportunity to create an environment in which to display our clothing and then being able to look at the finished picture--it was incredible. It was like, “This is what it’s supposed to be.

This is how it’s supposed to look. This is what this brand stands for.”

Did you work with any designers when you created your store?

Yes, Kelly Wearstler did our first store. I believe our store was the first retail space she’d ever designed. When I approached her about the project, Kelly was just wrapping up another project in Palm Springs and had spent a lot of time in the area. I had been keeping track of her work, and thought, “if I ever have a store, I want to work with this woman.” Since then, she’s done three of our boutiques. I should say that ten years later, the store still looks great. It doesn’t look dated. That’s definitely a testament to her skill.

What is your dream project?

During Palm Springs Modernism Week, I went to a lecture given by Brad Dunning on Alexander Girard, which is why I’m obsessing about Girard as of late. Part of Dunning’s presentation was Girard’s rebranding of Braniff Airlines in the ‘60s.

He redid all of the airport lounges, the planes, and even dressed the flight attendants in Pucci! I think it’d be fun to do something like that.

Like the Matchbook girl, you’re very much inspired by the past. Which retro person of interest, in your opinion, simply “got” it?

I love Iris Apfel because she goes for it on the jewelry.

She wears jewelry that’s actually meant for camels and horses, and I think that’s completely amazing. It’s sort of a cliché, but Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had really great style. Ali MacGraw in the ‘70s was kind of genius.

Oh, and Millicent Rogers.

She was a wealthy heiress so she could afford those glamorous couture gowns, but then she started mixing it with Navajo jewelry from around Santa Fe, New Mexico. That, at the time, was 120

considered a weird thing to do, but it was fantasticlooking.

Where are some of your favorite places to eat and shop in Los Angeles?

To eat, we love Mozza. We like The Hungry Cat, too.

As for shopping, I find most of my vintage clothing at various shows. There’s the Vintage Clothing and Textile show at the Pickwick Gardens in Burbank, which happens about three times year per. There is the Vintage Fashion Expo at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium about four times per year, as well. When I buy vintage, that’s usually where I buy it.

Pretend that you’ve been invited to Truman Capote’s 1962 Black and White Ball--whatever will you wear?

I guess I would wear something severe and stiff. Like a long column dress, with some sort of graphic color blocking. Or maybe a big, giant, graphic pattern. I would have worn some sort of headdress, too!

Alexis and Wade Negranti The Location...

Holland Ranch in San Luis Obispo, California We met... in ASL (American Sign Language) class our freshman year of college. It’s cute, every once in awhile we still sign to each other.

The proposal...

We went to dinner and then drove around beautiful country roads. I thought, "oh man, he is going to do it!" but then we headed home. We were getting ready for bed, I came down the stairs, and he was on one knee.

My dress...

I wanted a simple, classic dress, and that is exactly what I got. Lace is timeless.

It felt very "us" because...

I wore turquoise cowboy boots!

We honeymooned in...

Janice and Evan Lebon The Location...

San Francisco City Hall We met... at work. He was a temp, and we were assigned to a small project together.

The proposal... was on a bench in Riverside Park, where we spent many afternoons during the brief time we lived in New York. I kept fiddling around and taking pictures with all the different filters on my iPhone while he was nervously waiting for me to stop!

My dress...

I tried on a zillion short white dresses -thank goodness Kate Spade released their Bells and Whistles line a few months before I got married!

It felt very "us" because... we did exactly what we wanted to do, and we met our only goal of making sure all our guests had a good time. And a friend even sweet-talked the guard into letting our dog, Lucie, into City Hall.

We honeymooned in...

Palm Springs. It was the perfect relaxing, stylish, and classic Californian counterpoint to our wedding.
