This home was designed and built by Shad & Kristin Gates of Gig Harbor, WA, completed in 2015. With two young children they wanted to build a home that would not only fit their love for architecture and craftsmanship, but would also be a warm and comforting place for their family and guests for years to come.

To do this they focused on what they call “woodcentric materials utilizing reclaimed fence boards on backsplashes and accent walls, European Oak floors, wall paneling and counter tops, timber frame components on the covered patio and the genuine appeal of barn wood with the Windswept Weathered wood siding. Both Shad and Kristin are passionate about incorporating careful architectural style, simplicity and functionality into their design. A key element to the design is using unique and natural materials, inviting in the surrounding beauty of the Pacific Northwest, which brings comfort and warmth to indoor and outdoor spaces within the homes they build together.

This is the third home the couple has built together and each time they add in more natural wood with the intent of bringing timeless authenticity into their surroundings. This home was designed with farmhouse style incorporating both rustic and modern elements into the finishes for an eclectic mix of styles for a warm, aged appearance, yet still bright and modern. “With kids you know the space is going to get well used and the idea is to make it look like it’s intentional”, they remarked.

Being just outside of the city limits, the property sits amongst other 2-5 acre mini farms of Crescent Valley where people nurture their vegetable and flower gardens and many have chickens and lots of pets. The geese make their yearly stop here to feed on the neighbor’s apple trees and the property itself was a small farm planted in plumb trees around the turn of the century. The Gates family is thrilled to be moved into the home now and they count their blessings as they consider what an incredible place they have to call home.
