Congratulations to each of the winning builders in this year’s Master Builders Bankwest Building Excellence Awards for the South-West region. It is a tremendous achievement to be judged to-be the best in your field by your peers. Once again, the sole criterion for our awards was the quality of workmanship demonstrated through all aspects of the building project such as brickwork, plastering, painting, tiling, cabinet making, glazing and carpentry. With over 150 entries, our two (2) registered builder judges had a difficult time in deciding many of the winners and finalists. Entries this year came from towns within the area of Wandering in the north, Manjimup in the East, Augusta in the South and Bunbury/Busselton in the West. In addition to special sponsors’ awards, entries were judged in the following categories: - Contract Homes under $200, 000 to over $2 Million - Residential Alterations and Additions under $250,000 to over $500, 000 - Display Homes under $200,000 to over $400,000 - Multi Residential Developments under $500,000 to over $750,000 - Framed Construction under $400,000 to over $700,000 - Commercial/Industrial Buildings Under $1 Million to over $6 Million - Commercial/Industrial Buildings Alterations and Additions Under $5 Million to over $10 Million - Civil Engineering Works ‘Open category’ - & Trade Awards The total value of projects entered this year equated to over $225 million covering an area of over 85, 000m2 of construction which highlights the breadth of this region. Master Builders Awards showcase the best the building industry has to offer clients. To each builder, their project is a “winner” as it reflects many months of
planning, coordination of specialist trades and attention to detail in delivering the finished product. As these awards provide an independently assessed benchmark of standards, the real winners are, of course, homebuyers and corporate clients who benefit from builders striving for continual improvement from one year to the next. I trust you will admire the award winning builders and their incredible homes and other projects in this impressive feature produced by the South-Western Times. For those young people thinking about their future, why not consider a career in the building and construction industry? Job prospects, remuneration and career opportunities are very exciting as the housing industry is growing rapidly in response to increases in our population. The Building Industry is no longer seen as the domain of men, more to the point the industry is keen to absorb, recognise and encourage the valuable contributions of women. I find it exciting that the roles being embraced by women are as diverse as grass roots trades with our Alicia Hodson recently being awarded the female apprentice of the year for Western Australia to Entrepreneurs and role models such as Geraldton based Serena Guidice accepting the coveted National Young Builder of the year award, in Canberra. ARAVINA ESTATE & WINERY The renovation and extension to an old winery into a new entertainment and dining venue was a real challenge, dealing with old services and blending old with new and making the final product look like it was one wholly planned and built venue. We have achieved this by using panels of weather tex and open light colours, structural elements, clad in quality materials and open plan building, the latest in technology for the kitchen and front of house dining and function areas. The kitchen was gutted and doubled in size, the shed at the back of the building was converted into a car gallery and a new wedding and reception area was added. A new alfresco dining area was also included in the build, landscaping was completed to create a 5 star destination.
BUNBURY REGIONAL ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE The project consisted of the Design & Construction of an expansion to the existing Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre providing a new 250 seat theatre, function rooms, foyer/bar area, commercial kitchen, administration offices and back of house facilities along with external works incorporating a new undercover carpark. The project also included an expansion of the existing main Entertainment Centre foyer to provide additional breakout space; and breakthroughs between new and existing to provide access and allow both buildings to function as one complete building.

The project involved the expansion of the Sub Acute Care facilities in two stages. The first stage is the construction of a new Sub Acute Care building comprising 24 beds around a staff base and the extension of the main existing gym room, additional equipment store and extension of the existing group therapy room. The second stage followed after completion of the stage 1 and occupation of the new Sub Acute Care building, this works comprises of refurbishment and alterations selected rooms in the existing Sub Acute unit which provides additional services required for the new Sub Acute facility and also the refurbishment of selected rooms in the existing day therapy to achieve staff / patients segregation and enhance the day therapy unit management.

SOUTH WEST EXPRESS OFFICE Purpose built to accommodate the needs of a growing transport company, this concrete tilt up building has an appealing contemporary design and modern appointments throughout. The design is accentuated by a feature sunburst wall with matrix cladding, and prefinished plywood linings. Internally, a brushed aluminium reception with Tasmanian Oak trims and suspended cedar wood bulkhead, create an impressive entry. Raking ceilings and industrial concrete floors complete the picture. The project involved the construction of a new classroom block required for the relocation of year 7’s into the Bunbury Senior High School. The new facility is built on a sloping portion of the overall school premises next to the existing amphi theatre and offers spectacular views over the ocean and Bunbury city centre. The building is split over three levels and accommodate 4 learning areas. All construction works was carried out with the school being fully operational.

GEORGIANA MOLLOY ANGLICAN SCHOOL EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE Georgiana Molloy Anglican School, Yalyalup is a rapidly expanding academic facility with construction of stage 7 recently completed. Innovest has successfully completed 5 stages at the school. The Early Childhood centre is a colourful light filled building, constructed from Structural Steel, tilt panel and rendered brick. The design has an aesthetic feel with windows in the roof line for additional light into the building. The building comprises of Kindegarten and Pre-primary rooms with all amenities to facilitate successful operation of day to day activities.
The Perkins Head Office building was the culmination of years of planning, construction experience and intuitive design. This project showcases the quality and high standard of work Perkins is renowned for whilst utilizing the latest building innovations and technology throughout the construction process. Each level of the three storey building was designed with a specific function in mind, with the forethought to allow for future expansion. The ground floor features a spacious reception area, meeting room, as well as dedicated print, mail and IT server rooms. The first floor boasts an open plan work station layout with library space and staff room. The second floor showcases the stunning ceiling centerpiece, contains a spacious boardroom and large balcony as well as combination of open plan work stations and private office spaces.

BANKSIA STREET, BUNBURY Originally a small dwelling incorporating the main living area under a skillion verandah, the residence has been transformed into a contemporary four bedroom, two bathroom home with study, open plan living and alfresco deck area. The existing dwelling was enlarged with additions to the rear, in a traditional heritage style with dado cladding, jarrah floors and high ceilings. The new additions have been seamlessly integrated by matching the construction style of the original house, and reflective of numerous heritage properties in this locality. An excellent example of a successful heritage renovation/addition project, completed in under 16 weeks, for much less cost than anticipated for projects of this type.
CROWD RD, GELORUP The design called for a roofing system with a low profile, clean lines, good insulation, and low maintenance properties while being suitable for a pool environment. The butterfly roof design using polystyrene/colourbond panels, provided the required span with smooth top and bottom finishes. Quality, reconstituted limestone walls provided a low maintenance finish while acting as a thermal mass. They also matched the existing premises and provided the necessary retaining. An elevator was installed to overcome mobility issues.

The overall winners from each of these regions competed for the title of Country Home of the Year. This year the South West was represented by Zorzi South for a magniďŹ cent home built to perfection in Eagle Bay. During the last 7 years 6 South West projects have taken home this prestigious award, conďŹ rmation that quality trades working together are constructing some of the best projects in the state right here in the South West.
