P R E S I D E N T ’S PERSPECTIVE Greetings members. I hope you had a wonderful year and I wish you great prosperity in 2024! What an honor it’s been to serve as the president of Master Builders’ Association over the past two years. It’s hard to believe we reached the end of 2023, a successful year highlighted by our focus on what we called our “redzone plays” to advance our organization’s mission, and the construction industry in our region. I am proud of the hard working staff at MBA and their achievements in 2023, particularly in the areas of workforce development, educational support for the next generation in our industry, and advocacy for mental health. While you will be able to read more about these endeavors in this report, I’d like to highlight just a few. • Partnering with CAWP, we launched Yinz Good?, an innovative program to encourage conversation, and support mental health and wellness within the construction industry in Western Pennsylvania. • We celebrated the remarkable milestone of 25 years of support for industry-related education, including scholarships awarded to students studying engineering, construction management and safety, representing University of Pittsburgh, Slippery Rock University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Penn State University. • Challenges with labor availability remain a high priority for our industry and our members. This year we updated BuildWPA.org, a one-stop shop for information about rewarding careers in the construction industry. We even added an MBA Career Center to connect those looking for jobs with our members. Over the last year, we provided more opportunities for meaningful engagement of our members and sponsors, introducing new programming formats and topics, and community outreach opportunities. We will continue these initiatives and build on their momentum in the year ahead. It’s impossible to look at our 2023 and not celebrate the service and growth focus from MBA. We continue to invest in the industry and our talented team that has also grown this year. Ellianna Fry and Brandon Mendoza have come into the MBA team and added their own energy and experience to help us engage with members and drive important programs and initiatives. Join us as we keep #BuildingMomentum! Raymond A Volpatt, Jr., P.E. President, Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania

2023 Spotlight

YinzGood?™ Mental Health Education for Our Industry Showing someone that you care can be as simple as asking one small question: “Are you okay?” MBA and CAWP took that idea, put a Western Pennsylvania spin on it, and came up with what they thought construction crews would feel comfortable using – “Yinz Good?” Yinz Good? was founded in 2023 by MBA and the Constructors of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP) to encourage conversation and support for better mental health within the construction industry. Research shows that the construction industry has one of the highest suicide and substance misuse rates. So, MBA staff started working with mental health experts to pull together resources that can help individuals who may be suffering, those with family members that may be struggling, and employers or coworkers who have concerns for someone they work with.

Workforce Development There’s A Job in Construction for You Building Momentum for the Next Generation of Construction Jobs The construction industry is facing a crucial challenge with an aging workforce and declining enrollment in trade schools and higher education. Not only are skilled workers hard to find, but the growing skills gap prevents construction companies from capitalizing on advances of technology to the same degree as other industries. That’s why in 2023, MBA identified workforce development and diversity, equity and inclusion as a priority, and launched our comprehensive campaign, #BuildWPA. Our goal is to help members attract and retain talent, while creating a pipeline of workers for a stable and skilled workforce. Updating our BuildWPA website, and launching our MBA Career Center were key initiatives. Community outreach, sponsorships, trainings, internships and education support for apprenticeships and college degrees helped round out our workforce development activities. MBA’s Director of Workforce Development, Diversity and Equity & Inclusion, Lance Harrell, reached over 24,000 people sharing the message, “there’s a job in construction for you.”

BuildWPA.org Our new and improved BuildWPA website serves as a one-stop-shop for the latest information about MBA training and education programs, career recruitment and networking. The site offers access to an extensive library of resources and the latest in signatory relationships. Those 18+ who are interested in the building trades unions or other jobs will find plenty of resources and a blueprint for how to pursue a rewarding career. BuildWPA also houses the MBA Career Center. See the new BuildWPA website 

NEW MBA Career Center MBA’s Career Center is the place where those seeking a job or in our industry can learn about opportunities that exist with our members. Members post open positions, and jobseekers can apply directly through the site, powered by GrowthZone. Alongside the job openings on the site, BuildWPA includes apprenticeship opportunities. There are many paths to rewarding construction careers. Find the pathway to a successful career on BuildWPA, and sign up for job notifications. See the new MBA Career Center 

Student Architect Gains Real-World Construction Experience During Internship

MBA Scholarship Recipient Launches Career at Mascaro Construction

When Malia Hayes decided to pursue a career in architecture, the Hampton University student drafted a plan to achieve her dream despite what many might consider steep odds. “There are very few African American architects in America, and even fewer Black women architects,” said Lance Harrell, director, Workforce Development and Dversity, Equity & Inclusion. “So Malia is definitely bucking that trend, and forging an amazing path for success that also makes her a role model for other young people of color.”

Before his promotion to Assistant Project Manager at Mascaro Construction Company, LP, Brandon McDermott graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, with a focus in Construction Management and a minor in Economics. McDermott said his MBA/CAP scholarship helped financially, both during and after graduation.

Malia believes her internship with MBA will make her a better architect because it expanded her perspective of what’s involved in bringing architectural design to life. “I think the best advice I can give to another architecture student is to find an internship where you can visit construction sites and talk to contractors. Architectural studies focus heavily on design. Because I was able to visit active construction sites, I experienced how important the collaboration between contractor and architect is.” “Creating an internship for Malia, dovetails with MBA’s strong commitment to supporting education,” said Dave Daquelente, executive director, MBA. We want to get the word out to other students like Malia, that the construction industry offers many different pathways to a great career and excellent income.” Read more about Malia’s internship 

Before landing the job at Mascaro, McDermott was no stranger to construction. His experience working in his father’s residential construction company, McDermott Contracting, gave him an appreciation for what it takes for a successful career in the industry. He believes the technical knowledge from his engineering degree, combined with his on-the-job experience, positioned him to play a critical role balancing engineering theory with its application in the field. “Every day is so different in my job,” says McDermott. “There are new issues to tackle every day in construction. I love to be the bridge between all the various engineering specialties, such as mechanical , electrical and structural engineering and the building trades.” He credits Mascaro Construction for providing great mentorship over the years, and getting him more involved in MBA’s Young Contractors Committee events where he enjoys participating in MBAYC’s networking and philanthropic projects.

MBA Partners with A+ Schools Pittsburgh A+ Schools works with partners at the community and systems level to mobilize resources and coordinate supports for students, families and schools so that every child is ready to learn at school. M E N TA L H E A LT H – YINZ GOOD?

We remain focused on enriching your experience as members, adding resources and opportunities to help you and your business grow in our region. Creating dedicated staff alignment focused on membership experiences, retention, and growth is just one improvement you will notice.

The suicide rate in construction is about four times higher than the general population, and the secondhighest rate of all workplace industries. Mental health and suicide prevention will be an even bigger priority in 2024. In the spirit of Yinz Good? I challenge you to find ways to reduce stress and develop better balance in your work and personal life. Ask a coworker, teammate, or colleague, “Yinz Good?” — and then genuinely listen to what they have to share.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT We listen and find innovative solutions to address the shortage of skilled labor and supervisory staff. These issues require new ways of thinking and working. That’s why we’re focused on expanding our workforce development efforts, including leadership training for young construction professionals. Our new BuildWPA website will play a major role in diversifying our recruitment efforts and connecting members to skilled workers. Keep an eye out for new solutions that will bring employers, building trade unions, apprenticeship programs, and interested candidates closer together in 2024.

G O V E R N M E N T R E L AT I O N S To amplify that MBA is the voice of the construction industry and that our members and our issues are front and center in legislative policymaking, we have added depth on our team of external Government Relations and Public Affairs consultants. To lead these efforts, we’re thrilled to bring in Brandon Mendoza, our first Director of Public and Government Affairs.

This is your association. I’m excited to listen and learn how your voice, your experience and your energy will help to shape our staff and committee leadership in the coming year. We want you to join us and become more involved in #Building Momentum in 2024.

MBA’s Affiliate Council has proven to be a force in steadfastly promoting, supporting, and actively participating in its events. With a commitment to collaborative engagement, the committee is a vital link between MBA and its affiliate members, fostering a vibrant community that includes networking, knowledge exchange, and mutual support. Throughout the year, the council also set its sights on growth and expansion, welcoming new MBA Affiliate members, and strengthening bonds within the MBA community.

Our Education Committee endowed a new $50,000 scholarship at The Pennsylvania State University. “The Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania Scholarship in the Department of Architectural Engineering” is MBA’s first endowed scholarship with the university. Scholarships from the fund will be awarded each year to a 4th or 5th year Penn State undergraduate with an interest in construction management. They also presented the Construction Supervision Fundamentals course that provides early career construction professionals with the foundation to develop the skills necessary to become a supervisor in the construction industry, and the MBA Emerging Leadership Series, to facilitate the professional development of future leaders in the construction industry.

AIA /MBA JOINT COMMITTEE The AIA-MBA Joint Committee kicked off the year by sponsoring a free training session in February conducted by the City of Pittsburgh’s Permits, Licenses, and Inspections Department. The training centered on the OneStopPGH program, providing invaluable insights for both MBA and AIA members. The committee’s Prevention Through Design subcommittee kept up momentum by engaging with building owners to develop a comprehensive Playbook. This Playbook provides a set of instructions for successfully implementing Prevention Through Design (PtD) across the planning, design, construction, and turnover phases of a project. They elected two Co-Chairs, Shawn Bell, Turner Construction Group and Jeff Light, AIA, Avon Design Group, LLC, to this group in 2024.

L A B O R N E G O T I AT I O N STEERING COMMITTEE Armed with determination and a shared commitment to building a better future, we’ve been engaged since the last Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) settlement with the Cement Masons in quarterly joint committee meetings about collaboration, recruiting and retention strategies, and training. We have also met regularly with our other labor partners and associations to strengthen our efforts as a union construction industry over the last year. In 2024 the Labor Negotiation Steering Committee will focus on negotiating the CBA with our labor partners at the Cement Masons Local Union No. 526.

L E G I S L AT I V E C O M M I T T E E The Legislative Committee played a key role in recruiting MBA’s first Director of Public & Government Affairs, Brandon J. Mendoza. Brandon earned a Master of Public Affairs with a focus on Urban & Regional Affairs and Nonprofit Management from University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public & International Affairs (GSPIA). They also took a proactive approach with private developers, institutional construction users, and peer associations such as AIA-Pittsburgh and NAIOP Pittsburgh to navigate and support City of Pittsburgh development and zoning fee changes

in Q1 2023. The Legislative Advocacy committee organized a Town Hall in August hosting both candidates for Allegheny County Executive.

The Risk Management Committee presented a course on fall prevention, developed through a grant provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Susan Harwood grant program. The course provided students with the knowledge to prevent workers from being exposed to the leading cause of fatal accidents in the construction industry. As part of MBA’s focus on mental health, the committee played a pivotal role in the launch of Yinz Good? and Mental Health Mondays, and offered courses to support mental health in our industry

YOUNG CONTR AC TORS COMMITTEE The members of the Young Contractors Committee had an amazing year filled with philanthropy, professional growth, and events to benefit our community. They participated in Earth Day Clean Up with the Green Builders Committee, sponsored an axe throwing and networking event that resulted in over 40 toys for the kids at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, volunteered at a local food bank, and capped off the year by raising $9,000 for Austin’s Playroom at their holiday party.
