ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)* Brockton & Canton Campuses

Massasoit’s ESL courses are advanced college-level courses. Potential students whose first language is not English must be assessed for English as a Second Language rather than for Introduction to Writing, English Composition, or Preparing for College Reading. Students must register for an ESL evaluation. Students will be placed in College ESL courses, if appropriate. Students desiring financial aid assistance must be accepted into a program of study (matriculated), and carry at least 6 credits each semester. We recommend students apply at least 2 months in advance of the beginning of the semester, and earlier, whenever possible. Students not ready for Massasoit’s college-level ESL classes will be directed to alternative ESOL programs for further development of English skills. The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education requires all students attending public colleges in Massachusetts to take a series of placement tests that assess skills in writing, reading, and mathematics. The tests are not evaluated in terms of passing or failing. Rather, the tests are used to decide which courses should be taken at the beginning of a student’s college career. It is further recommended that you consult Massasoit Community College’s course descriptions for any testing pre-requisites. Testing may be completed at any of our campuses/sites and would be accepted for all classes offered by Massasoit Community College. Coaching Sessions to prepare for the placement tests are offered for free to students applying to Massasoit Community College. COACHING SESSIONS FOR ACCUPLACER TESTING Coaching sessions are designed to help students perform to the best of their ability on Massasoit’s placement exams. Each one-hour session offers strategies for taking the mathematics or reading test. The sessions will include practice materials and an overview of the courses students may place into per their test scores. Also, a brief review of essay-writing will be included in the reading session. This coaching is free to Massasoit students who may attend one or both of the subject-area sessions. Massasoit Community College, through its Senior Center, encourages older adults interested in educational, cultural, and social issues to participate in a special weeklong summer program. Each day includes academic classes and discussions, as well as experiential opportunities for integrated learning. Students may register in the Brockton or Canton Registrar’s Office beginning April 1, 2013. Mail applications will not be processed prior to 4/1/2013. Learning Summer 2013 Massasoit offers two types of online learning courses: Fully Online courses and Blended courses. Fully Online and Blended courses provide a way for you to customize your learning experience to match your educational goals, learning styles, and scheduling constraints. ONLINE COURSES: Online courses allow students to take courses anyplace they have access to a computer connected to the internet. Each course has a site on the World Wide Web, where assignments and communication with the instructor can take place. Students are required to have regular access to a computer with a working internet connection for online courses. With online classes, students meet online during the semester. This gives students the opportunity to experience the individualized, student-centered attention for which Massasoit Community College is known, without having to leave home or rush from work every week.

Blended Courses on the Brockton Campus - Summer Session I 2012 Blended courses are a combination of online and face-to-face instruction. Each course typically has a course website, where assignments and communication with the instructor can take place. Approximately half of the class sessions are conducted faceto-face to further explain course material. Students are required to have regular access to a computer with a working internet connection for hybrid (blended) online courses. Blended courses allow students the opportunity to balance the best of two worlds: faceto-face interaction with an instructor and classmates combined with the opportunity to experience individualized, student-centered attention while accessing campus resources from home or work. Summer Science Exper ence The Summer Science Program provides students entering 4th through 12th grade with an engaging and handson science and math experience. Participating students use creativity and teamwork to solve interesting design challenges. In a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere, students interact with college professors who are committed to making learning science and math both rewarding and fun. Summer Science Experience will run July 8-August 16, 2013, offering 6 weeks of summer experience in the STEM fields. The weeks will run Monday-Friday 9:00am-2:00pm. Community Education Course Descriptions ARTS AND MUSIC – NON CREDIT CSAL015 One-Stroke Painting for Adults Learn how to paint even if you have never painted before. You will learn the hottest new techniques of decorative painting, which could be incorporated into a thriving business. Additional material fee payable the first night of class. CSAL016 Advanced 1-Stroke Painting Now that you have learned the One-Stroke basics, take it to the next level and master your skills with more advanced strokes! From the shell stroke to reverse and wiggle strokes, you will learn to create the more difficult flowers such as the iris and rose. Additional material fee payable the first night of class. CSAL111 Acting for Beginners This class is for those new to acting ages 16 and up. It is an introductory course designed to get students up on their feet and teach them some basics about acting through the use of acting techniques, tools, improv and scripted exercises. Students will develop an understanding of what acting is, what it is not, confidence, and acting skills in the areas of imagination, concentration, focus, listening and reactions.
