PRÓLOGO Y EVOLUCIÓN DEL FESTIVAL ES/El 981Heritage "SON Estrella Galicia" cumplió en 2014 su 10ª edición, un festival que nació en La Coruña como un evento único, se ha convertido una década después en festival itinerante que pasea sus más de 10 fechas anuales por 3 ciudades españolas (La Coruña, Madrid, Barcelona) y una internacional, Londres. Un evento por el que han pasado en estos primeros 10 años algunos de los nombres más importantes de la escena independiente y vanguardia internacional como Crystal Fighters, Swans, Wild Beasts, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Tinariwen, Austra, Youth Lagoon, Mount Kimbie, Pantha Du Prince, Lindstrøm, Holy Other, Gilles Peterson, WhoMadeWho, Nathan Fake, Iceage, Peter Hook, James Holden o Andrew Weatherall entre otros muchos.

Podríamos hablar de que el 981 es uno de los pocos festivales de España que cuenta cada una de sus ediciones como sold out, que su crecimiento ha sido constante desde el año de su creación, pero lo realmente importante del 981 no son los números sino que es un festival de sensaciones, de búsqueda de un producto nuevo, un evento que propone lo que otros no hacen, una apuesta por artistas que ofrecen algo diferente y por la vanguardia musical de cada año.

We could say that the 981 is among the few festivals in Spain which counts each of its editions as sold out, that its growth has been steady since its creation, but what really matters at 981 is not the numbers but the fact it is a festival of sensations, a search for a new output, an event that proposes what others don't, a commitment to artists offering something different and the musical leading edget of every year.

El festival 981Heritage anuncia las primeras fechas de su nueva edición, una muy especial, la décima. Lejos quedan los inicios en Galicia que posteriormente vieron como la cita abría franquicia en Madrid, más tarde en Londres y este año una nueva en Barcelona. Alfons acumulaba sold out tras sold out en sus giras por Reino Unido y la Europa continental. Con su última visita a Madrid aún en la memoria de los que asistieron al concierto, llega "Joyland", la continuación de su aclamado "TRST". Donde el debut marcaba claramente las bases del oscuro psicodrama característico de Alfons, el nuevo material se aventura en nuevas y variadas direcciones. EN/Emerging from a dense cloud of smoke and synths, "TRST", the debut album of the Canadian TRUST is a collection of dark and shining gothic electro, a volcanic gem blackened with fragile desires and sexual melodrama that captivated both audience and press in 2012 and that plays in the same league as Depeche Mode, Crystal Castles or Austra. Desde su vuelta en activo son, además de uno de los grupos que proporcionan uno de los espectáculos en directo más contundentes del mundo, auténticos clásicos que se conjugan en presente. Su anterior trabajo THE SEER copó todas las listas de mejor disco del año. Ahora, con su nuevo trabajo TO BE KIND (MUTE, 2014) -otras dos horas de tormenta perfecta marca Michael Gira- revalidan título y vuelven dispuestos a revitalizar un aquelarre que hay que haber visto como mínimo una vez en la vida. Dentro de 20 años, todavía recordaremos a estos SWANS... Margaret Chardiet, aka Pharmakon, es una neoyorquina que durante su adolescencia ensayó en varios grupos de punk-rock y grunge. Con el paso de los años se fue interesando cada vez más por las teorías de la Musique Concrète, la experimentación y el ruido como un instrumento más. En 2005 decidió fundar su propio proyecto y desde entonces ha editado un álbum y 4 EP’s. Sus performances en directo son un auténtica demostración de salvajismo, ruido y nihilismo.

Their previous work THE SEER topped all lists of best album of the year. Now, with their new job TO BE KIND (MUTE, 2014) -other two hours of perfect storm by the brand Michael Cira – confirm their title and they are back willing to revitalize a coven to be seen at least once in life. FOREST SWORDS + DANIEL VAN LION JUEVES, 9 OCTUBRE/22:30 H/SALA EL SOL, MADRID 14€ ANTICIPADA/17€ TAQUILLA ES/El gestor de este proyecto es el británico Matthew Barnes, de Wirral (localidad cercana a Liverpool), que entrelaza ritmos inspirados en el hip hop, sampleados atmosféricos y guitarras oníricas. Que evoca lo ancestral a través de lo moderno. Hay muchos más productores de habitación ahora que en 2010, cuando el llamado “witch-house” (house de hechiceros/embrujado, si nos ponemos literales) empezó a sacar la cabeza y se convirtió en uno de los géneros hipsters por excelencia. Un nuevo trip-hop, profundo y reconocible: con drones perturbadores, guitarras complejas (que llegan del postpunk), un bajo abisal, percusiones que vapulean. Y todo eso combinado con voces brumosas. Posiblemente, la mejor réplica a esas muescas urbanas tan desoladoras de Burial. Daniel Van Lion es un claro ejemplo de filosofía DIY. Sus inicios se remontan a 2012, cuando Daniel Mesa consigue atraer la atención de medios nacionales e internacionales con su mixtape "Day Two", siendo comparado con artistas como Boards of Canada, Pantha Du Prince, Autechre, Apparat o Ulrich Schnauss. Desde ese momento, el artista gaditano afincado en Madrid ha girado sin parar por nuestra geografía, siendo en 2013 una de las piezas claves del puzzle Valle Eléctrico, plataforma 'clubbing' con la que participó en el vinilo "Pelea de Gatos" junto a los daneses Battlekat, entre otros. 50/51
EN/The manager of this project is the British Matthew Barnes, from Wirral (a town near Liverpool), interweaving rhythms inspired by hip hop, atmospheric samples and dreamy guitars. It evokes the ancestral through the modernity. There are many more producers of room now than in 2010, when the so-called "witch-house" (house of sorcerers/enchanted, if we are literal) began pulling his head and became one of the quintessential hipsters. A new trip-hop, deep and recognizable: with disturbing drones, complex guitars (coming from the post-punk), an abyssal bass, percussions that beat up. And all this combined with misty voices. Since then, the artist from Cadiz settled in Madrid has toured endlessly through our geography, being in 2013 one of the key pieces of the puzzle Valle Electrico, a 'clubbing' platform with which he participated in the vinyl "Pelea de Gatos" with the Danish Battlekat, among others.

TINARIWEN JUEVES, 13 NOVIEMBRE/20:00 H/SALA BUT, MADRID 25€ ANTICIPADA/30€ TAQUILLA ES/Tinariwen son una de las mejores bandas del siglo XXI en explotar la guitarra como instrumento. Habrían sido los favoritos de Hendrix, pero a cambio lo son de Robert Plant o Flea, entre otros. Damon Albarn los sitúa entre los mejores músicos del mundo y Thom Yorke asegura haber copiado sus riffs de guitarra. Han recibido elogios de U2, Brian Eno o Tom Waits y han colaborado con Robert Plant y Herbie Hancock. La banda surgió en 1982, con las rebeliones tuaregs de finales de los 70. El grupo forjó su hipnótico estilo en el exilio argelino y libio entre la música tradicional, el pop norteafricano (chaabi, rai) y distintas variantes del rock occidental, inventando matices nuevos para la guitarra eléctrica. Su nuevo disco, Emmaar, fue grabado cerca de Joshua Tree, en el sur de California, debido a los problemas políticos y la difícil situación que sigue viviendo el norte de Mali. En él han colaborado el guitarrista de Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Josh Klinghoffer (ya sabíamos que Flea es fan del grupo desde hace tiempo…), el multiinstrumentista Fats Kaplin (pedal Steel, mandolina, guitarra, violin…), sideman habitual de Jack White, Saul Williams y el guitarrista Matt Sweeney. Un elenco de lujo para un trabajo que cristaliza la esencia del Stone rock y el assouf (la nostalgia) de los tuaregs. Blues del desierto, rock subsahariano, alma bereber... Entre canciones de lucha y cantos de esperanza, TINARIWEN continúan renovando la cultura tuareg. 52/53
EN/Tinariwen are one of the best bands of the XXI century to exploit the guitar as an instrument. There would have been Hendrix’ favourites, but instead they are Robert Plant’s or Flea’s, among others. Damon Albarn places them among the best musicians in the world and Thom Yorke assured to have copied their guitar riffs. They have received praise from U2, Brian Eno and Tom Waits and have collaborated with Robert Plant and Herbie Hancock. The band emerged in 1982, with the Tuareg rebellions of the late 70's. The band forged their hypnotic style in the Algerian and Libyan exile between traditional music, the North African pop (chaabi, rai) and different variants of Western rock, inventing new nuances for the electric guitar. Their new album, Emmaar, was recorded near Joshua Tree, in Southern California, due to political problems and the difficult situations still lived in northern Mali. In it, they counted with the collaboration of the guitarist of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Josh Klinghoffer (we knew that Flea is a fan of the band since some time ago...), the multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin (Pedal Steel, mandolin, guitar, violin...), regular sideman of Jack White, Saul Williams and the guitarist Matt Sweeney. A great cast for a job that crystallizes the essence of Stone rock and the Assouf (nostalgia) of the Tuareg. Desert Blues, sub-Saharan rock, Berber soul ... Between fight songs and hope songs, TINARIWEN continue to renew the Tuareg culture.

Fundados en 1975, y con la figura reverencial de David Thomas como faro y única constante, los de Cleveland lo dejan claro desde el lema que preside su enciclopédica web: Ars longa, spectatores fugaces (el arte perdura, el público viene y va). Toda una declaración de intenciones que viene rigiendo su monumental carrera, y que explica la desprejuiciada apertura estilística de un discurso que, aunque aceptaría infinitas etiquetas, podemos resumir como art punk rock o, de manera más justa, rock a la Pere Ubu. Ese perfil de outsiders natos les ha privado del éxito comercial, al tiempo que les granjeaba un papel de culto que hace enmudecer al de otras divinidades underground coetáneas como Swans, The Residents, Red Krayola (el propio Mayo Thompson formó parte de Pere Ubu), o Faust. Aunque sus directos son conocidos por su demoledora intensidad, David Thomas y los suyos no se han prodigado en nuestros escenarios, así que marquen en rojo el 29 de noviembre.

EN/Pere Ubu is one of the best examples of artistic integrity that has given the history of rock. Founded in 1975 and with the reverential figure of David Thomas as lighthouse and only constant, the Cleveland band make it clear from the motto that presides over their encyclopedic web: Ars longa, spectatores fugaces (Art lasts, the audience comes and goes). A declaration of intent that is ruling their monumental career and explains the unprejudiced stylistic opening of a speech that, although will accept infinite labels, can be summarized as art punk rock or, more fairly, rock in Pere Ubu style. This profile of born outsiders have deprived them of commercial success, while provided them a cult role that silences other contemporary underground divinities like Swans, The Residents, Red Krayola (Mayo Thompson himself was part of Pere Ubu) or Faust. Although their live shows are known for their devastating intensity, David Thomas and his men have not been very frequent on our stages, so marked in red the date November 29.

AUSTRA JUEVES, 10 JULIO/19:30 H/OVAL SPACE, LONDRES £15 ANTICIPADA/£18 TAQUILLA ES/Trío canadiense con base en Toronto (que en directo amplia su formación, hasta doblarla) liderado por la carismática Katie Stelmanis, poseedora de una llamativa voz dramática. De formación clásica y operística, Katie está lista para admitir y asumir cualquier adhesivo del tipo “la nueva Kate Bush”. Antes de este proyecto Stelmanis facturaba en solitario un pop arty y sintético, tenso. Con Austra mantiene su instinto teatral y su querencia por lo sintético, pero haciendo música más cálida y confortable. Puede etiquetarse como electro gótico que bebe de la new wave británica de principios de los 80 (facción Japan, Soft Cell). Por mucho que en su ADN haya mucho de Giorgio Moroder no hablamos de música de baile, ya que sus riffs no golpean ni se ondulan, sino que fluyen y envuelven. Mientras suenan, Stelmanis no canta por encima de la música, prefiere que su voz se exprese mezclada con la trama instrumental. Son las suyas canciones que apelan al “clubber” oscuro que llevamos dentro, al fan de Depeche Mode y al “groove” a lo Studio 54. Quien dude si han sabido traer todo eso al presente solo ha de escuchar su primer álbum, “Feel It Break”, publicado en 2011 en el sello Domino. “Olympia”, su sucesor, publicado en verano de 2013, está producido por Mike Haliechuk (miembro de Fucked Up) y Damian Taylor (este, las partes vocales), más épico y doblando la apuesta para alcanzar el gran pop crossover. 64/65
EN/Canadian trio based in Toronto (which in their live performances increases its members to the double), led by the charismatic Katie Stelmanis, who possess a striking dramatic voice. With classical and operatic training, Katie is ready to support and take any label such as "the new Kate Bush". Before this project, Stelmanis made solo pop arty, synthetic, tense. With Austra, she keeps her theatrical instinct and her fondness for the synthetic, but making warmer and more comfortable music. It can be labelled as electro gothic, drinking from the British new wave of the early 80s ( Japan faction, Soft Cell). Although in her DNA there is a lot of Giorgio Moroder, we are not talking about dance music, because her riffs do not hit or undulate, but flow and wrap you. While they sound, Stelmanis does not sing above the music, she prefers that her voice is mixed with the instrumental frame. Her songs appeal to the dark "clubber" that we all have inside, the fan of Depeche Mode and the "groove" to the Studio 54 style. Anyone who doubts whether they have managed to bring all that to the present, only need to listen to her first album, "Feel Break It", published in 2011 in the Domino label. BLUE HAWAII JUEVES, 10 JULIO/19:30 H/OVAL SPACE, LONDRES £15 ANTICIPADA/£18 TAQUILLA ES/En 2010, Raphaelle tandell-Preston y Alexander Cowan, canadienses y pareja, publicaron el EP “Blooming Summer”, ocho canciones de electro-pop playero que sacaban la inspiración de un viaje de dos meses que ambos se habían pegado por Centroamérica ese año. Una exploración también, en las letras, sobre los interrogantes que se abren con cada nueva relación. Pero más ocupados en liderar su otro proyecto musical, el grupo de orientación más guitarrera Braids, aparcaron Blue Hawaii durante un tiempo. En marzo de 2013 ese parón llegó a su fin con la publicación de su primer largo, “Untogether”, una especie de tratado sobre la desconexión y la alienación surgido de ver cómo se desperdigaba la escena DIY de Montreal de la que provenían. Pop post-moderno de y para una generación que creció obsesionada con la música de baile, con fijación por el lado oscuro e impersonal de la electrónica, llamando a la frialdad y la soledad a través de sus once composiciones con voces distorsionadas y arreglos espinosos.

EN/In 2010, Raphaelle Tandell-Preston and Alexander Cowan, a Canadian couple, released the EP "Blooming Summer", eight songs of beach electro-pop that drew inspiration from a twomonth trip that they both enjoyed in Central America that year. Also an exploration of the lyrics, of the questions that are opened with each new relationship. But they were more worried about leading their other musical project, the band with a more guitar orientation, Braids, so Blue Hawaii was parked for a while. In March 2013 the break ended with the publication of their first long, "Untogether", a kind of treatise on the disconnection and alienation that was created from the fact of seeing the DIY scene on Montreal, from where they came, was being scattered. Post-modern pop of and for a generation that grew obsessed with dance music, with a liking for the dark and impersonal side of electronic, calling the coldness and loneliness through its eleven compositions with distorted vocals and thorny arrangements.

El proyecto empezó a germinar cuando Pell hizo de batería en una gira de We Have Band. Lo que empezó siendo un divertimento, con la voz de Bancroft surfeando los ritmos que lanzaba Pell, ha ido evolucionando y cogiendo pulso y definición con los meses. Su primer álbum, “Ice On The Belly”, que salió a finales de 2013, experimenta con los beats hasta crear inesperados encuentros posibles ("Pass It Down" suena a The Happy Mondays meets Kraftwerk en los 90) y urgencias casi tribales ("Magnets"), con una producción que aporta a todos los cortes un sutil filo industrial, brillo metálico y rebaba urbana.

EN/Electronic duo from London formed by the producer and drummer Marc Pell (Micachu & The Shapes) and the singer and instrumentalist Darren Bancroft (We Have Band). The project began to germinate when Pell played drums on a tour of We Have Band. What started as an entertainment, with the voice of Bancroft surfing the rhythms that Pell threw, has evolved and taken pulse and definition within the months. Directos a una de las más prestigiosas del indie. Buen ojo el del sello: al año siguiente ya aparecían en la lista de las diez bandas que, según 'New Musical Express', estaban destinadas a ser las siguientes en copar titulares y premios. Y así ha sido. En 2008 llegó el LP de debut, “Limbo, Pato" (2008), para abrir el apetito de los medios y arquear las primeras cejas. Luego el empujón definitivo, con “Two Dancers” (2009), el que dejó a esos medios y esas cejas rendidos ante la exuberancia de su dramatismo, liderado por la voz de Hayden Thorpe. Cayeron críticas con muchas estrellas, también alguna nominación a los Mercuy Prize y se confirmó el triunfo de una apuesta valiente, excéntrica y ambiciosa por el rock británico de pura raza. En este caso, uno en el que confluyen los gustos del seguidor de Orange Juice y los del de The Smiths. Uno en el que también se encuentran aristocracia y anarquía. En mayo de 2011 publicaron su tercer álbum, “Smother”, con su gusto por la belleza atemporal expresándose de forma más concisa y directa. Con más desnudez en los arreglos y nocturnidad en el tono. El cuarto paso lo han dado con "Present Tense", este febrero, el más completo de todos, un disco que ríe y que llora, que se detesta a sí mismo y al siguiente segundo se adora. Que ha sido descrito como pop afilado, con carga pollítica, brutalmente honesto, un tratado de once canciones exigentes, sin el barniz de la superficialidad, en las que Billy Bragg y lo mejor de The xx se llegan a dar la mano. PEAKING LIGHTS SÁBADO, 8 NOVIEMBRE/21:30 H/SALA GARUFA, CORUÑA 13€ ANTICIPADA/16€ TAQUILLA ES/Dúo de marido-esposa (él, Aaron Coyes, constructor de sintetizadores; ella, Indra Dunis, batería y cantante, que había militado en Dinasty y en Numbers) que empezó su andadura en 2008, tras coincidir ambos en la banda Rahdunes. A partir de ahí, y con un sonido que procesaba cajas de ritmos, órgano Hammond, guitarra y un bajo de grooves anchos, fueron crearon mantras de mentalidad lo-fi, con el dub, el krautock y el pop psicodélico haciéndose ovillos y nubes de humo, reptando o, a veces, alborotándose un poco, pero nunca en exceso, sin disgregarse demasiado ni dejar de sonar como un paisaje de gelatina. Con la base de operaciones en Wisconsin, dieron su primer paso con el autoeditado “Clearvoiant” (2008), al que siguieron, ya con discográfica detrás, “Imaginary Falcons” (2009) y “936” (2011). Una tripleta donde el amateurismo voluntario era un rasgo distintivo, si bien el último de los tres portaba mayor meditación. Se confirmó esa sensación al publicarse “Lucifer” (2012) -que a finales de ese año dio lugar a “Lucifer In Dub”-, cuyos ocho cortes están más producidos, ya con ojo profesional, y se acercan al dub digital de mediados de los 80, y no tanto a las variaciones del catálogo de King Tubby que habían despachado hasta entonces. Con el inminente "Cosmic Logic", que se publicará a principios de octubre, se prsentan listos para entrar en la lista de descubrimientos a retener de cualquier fan de Massive Attack, Boards Of Canada o The Orb. 84/85
EN/A Husband-wife duo (he, Aaron Coyes, builder of synthesizers; she Indra Dunis, drummer and singer, who had been member of Dynasty and Numbers) began their career in 2008 after meeting in the band Rahdunes. From there, and with a sound that processed drum machines, Hammond organ, guitar and a bass with wide grooves, they created mantras of lo-fi mentality, with dub, krautock and psychedelic pop tangling and creating clouds of smoke, crawling or sometimes disturbing a bit, but never too much, without dispersing too much or stoping sounding like a landscape of gelatin. With their base in Wisconsin, they gave their first step with the self-released "Clearvoiant" (2008), which was followed, with a label behind, "Imaginary Falcons" (2009) and "936" (2011). A trio where the volunteer amateurism was a distinctive feature, although the last of the three carried more meditation. That feeling was confirmed when "Lucifer" was published (2012), which later that year resulted in "Lucifer In Dub" - whose eight cuts are more produced, with a professional eye, and approach the digital dub of the mid 80s, rather than the variations in the catalog of King Tubby they have dispatched until then. With the impending "Cosmic Logic", to be published in early October, they are ready to enter the list of discoveries to retain for any fan of Massive Attack, Boards Of Canada or The Orb.
