“At 5th and Western, we used to have an office. I’m a contractor and our association office was there, upstairs, and I came quite a bit then. Of course, the street was very different and there have been a number of changes over the years, but it’s still an interesting street. I think some of the best furniture in the world was on this street.”

“(I like) the different ways and and different places to shop and to eat- the spirit of it, (there’s) some liveliness ”

“I live in Koreatown. I was born and raised here so I know all the ins and outs. I grew up on Western because my parents had a business here. As a kid, I used to walk down (Western) everyday- it’s a part of my childhood. I would love to see a lot more businesses come in, more street friendly businesses, like food and hip stuff. It’s already happening and I’m happy to see the change.”

Design Workshop #1 On November 8th, LA-Más organized the first Design Workshop for #WelcometoWestern. We developed and presented initial design ideas based on the feedback from our Community Open House. 60+ community members shared their opinions and voted on their priorities for Western Avenue improvements. This is how they voted.

Community Priorities Overall Strategy

For Example...

1

Better pedestrian experience (44)*

2

Adding Landscape to Under-utilized Spaces (40)*

Crosswalks

“Crosswalks! They should be lit (w/LED’s) and should be designed in such a way that they should encourage pedestrians to cross and promote pedestrian reconnection/visibility.”

Mini Parklet

“More people and families will want to walk and explore the areas around them if there are friendly, welcoming, and engaging spaces on the streets - more people on the street is good!”

3

Bus Stop Programming (19)*

New & enhanced bus stops

“This is nice for people that are waiting for the bus so they don’t get wet if it rains. Many people are riding the bus.”

4

Small Business Supporting Amenities (16)*

“Benches and seating make the street feel more welcoming and makes for opportunities to meet and talk with neighbors.”
