Dear Marylhurst alumni and friends, Over the summer, we crafted a new strategic vision for Marylhurst University, and I’m very excited to share details with you. One aspect of our vision that remains steadfast is our commitment to inspired values — educating students to become leaders of competence, conscience and compassion, who are working to create a more just, humane and sustainable world. What’s new? In addition to being a beacon of academic excellence that serves each student, we are committed to a fully activated campus -- a thriving hub for cultural, artistic and professional enrichment -- serving our alumni, students and the community. Read more about our renewed vision at marylhurst.edu/about/mission-and-values. Another announcement I’m thrilled to share with you, especially with our business alumni: Anne Ruybalid is our new director of the School of Business. Anne joined Marylhurst in 2013 as an adjunct in the School of Business, teaching and developing curriculum in courses such as human capital management, statistics and market research. Anne brings extensive experience and energy to her new role. If you want to know more about how she’ll work to connect Marylhurst’s School of Business to the needs of our community, read a Q&A at marylhurst.edu/ruybalid. Our 125th anniversary year is almost here! Where does the time go? Our big anniversary coincides with the 2018-2019 academic year. We’ll be sharing news and announcements in the coming months regarding events, celebrations and more. Keep abreast of developments via our website and social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram). Thank you for all you do to support Marylhurst University. We’re excited about expanding our role as the region’s academic and cultural hub serving both students and the broader region, and we couldn’t do it without you. Warmly,

Melody Rose, Ph.D. President

The Marylhurst Chamber Choir, the premiere choral ensemble at Marylhurst University, had a wonderful time at the European Choir Games at Riga, Latvia, this past summer. They were the only American ensemble selected to compete. This spring, in May 2018, Dr. Justin Smith will conduct the choir singing large works – the Gloria and Te Deum settings by British composer John Rutter – as part of a series presented by MidAmerica Productions. “Our Marylhurst Chamber Choir performed at Carnegie Hall in 2015, and it could only be described as a oncein-a-lifetime experience, performing to a packed hall in that most revered venue,” Smith said. “In 2018, members of our Marylhurst choirs will again have this incredible opportunity.” events.marylhurst.edu | marylhurst.edu | 5

THE ART GYM’S NEW CURATOR In October, Marylhurst welcomed the new Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Director and Curator of the Art Gym and Belluschi Pavilion, ASHLEY STULL MEYERS. What was the strangest thing you helped ship overseas? Here are a few fun facts about Laura Sequeira. To remember how to spell my last name think ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after Sequeira! My last name is pronounced suh-ker-uh - it rhymes with Peter Cetera. I was born in San Francisco and moved to Portland in 1993. The first 10 years of my career I worked in the international shipping industry. From 2004-2008, I owned Wired, a coffee shop on West Burnside. My first introduction to Marylhurst was in 2005 as a contract employee. I came back in 2008 to work full-time in Admissions. I enjoy cooking, and especially like to make my mom’s fried rice, curry won tons and soy sauce chicken - it has a secret ingredient! I was the chair of the Labyrinth Group at Marylhurst, and helped get the painted labyrinth installed outside of Shoen Library. I am also a trained labyrinth facilitator. I am a Harry Potter fan! My visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Orlando) with my daughter was so much fun. I’m excited to work with our alumni - I remember many of them from admissions. I am a dog person. I have a chihuahua/terrier mix named Rai (short for Raider). I was a typical Marylhurst student, enrolling mid-career while working full-time and parenting. I know the challenges firsthand! My degree is in Communications, with a certificate in Conflict Resolution. Chirp chirp! I’m starting to get into birdwatching; it’s a hobby that my fiancé and I now share.

Alumni Weekend 2017 OUR STORY, OUR JOURNEY Marylhurst was delighted to welcome alumni back to celebrate Alumni Weekend 2017 on October 20 and 21. Consummate storyteller and faculty member Will Hornyak kicked off the weekend with his Friday workshop “Telling Stories, Changing Lives: The Art of Storytelling in the Work of Building Community.” The Alumni Art Reception that followed showcased the works of Art and Art Therapy alumni. The final event of the evening, Marylhurst Alumni Stories (in the style of “The Moth”), captured the spirit of Marylhurst across many generations of alumni. Saturday included opportunities to take tea with the SNJM Sisters, celebrate outstanding alumni, take a historical tour of the campus with Sr. Carole Strawn, SNJM ’69, ’12 and attend Alumni Mass. A new event, the Sister’s Journey, honored the fortitude of the founding Sisters through poignant compositions written by Marylhurst students. NEW VISION FOR MARYLHURST After two years of intensive planning, on June 5, 2017, the Board of Trustees adopted a new strategic vision to guide Marylhurst University through its 125th Anniversary next year and well into the future. Grounded in the educational values of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and propelled by the current and future educational needs of this region, Marylhurst University will focus on two main strategies that will mutually support and reinforce each other.

Enhancing Academic Programs to Serve our Students Marylhurst University will build upon its quality academic programs to continue to be a beacon of excellence in graduate and undergraduate education. We will serve our savvy, self-motivated and diverse students and will make everything easy BUT the classes. Undergraduate degrees will be rooted in our liberal arts heritage, but will embed professional development skills into every program. All undergraduate degrees will have direct pathways to graduate degrees, lowering the cost and time to degree completion. A focus on graduate and professional studies will bolster all academic offerings, and the development of more low-residency graduate programming will allow students from a broader audience to choose Marylhurst. These programs will bring students to campus to work together with their professors at least twice a year and will foster stronger connections between students and with Marylhurst.

Capital Projects Multi-year planning is underway to shepherd the new vision for Marylhurst to reality. The first steps toward this exciting new future are recently approved capital projects that will support our main strategies. By January of 2018, all critical student services will be relocated to the B.P. John Administration building, including advisors, student accounts, financial aid, veteran’s affairs, career services and admissions. A facelift is creating an inviting and accessible space on the main floor and a “one-stopshop” for students who are often coming to campus in the evening before classes. By fall of 2018, Marylhurst will renovate its Villa Maria residence hall to be used for fulltime student living, as well as rooms available for shortstay programs. We are excited to share more about these projects soon.

Activating our Campus to Serve the Region Marylhurst’s beautiful and scenic campus has been underutilized for far too long. Our vision will activate campus to become a thriving hub for cultural, artistic and professional enrichment and a place where our students can live, participate in short stay programs and congregate. Revitalized academic spaces will provide performance venues for a broad range of arts and cultural institutions and leased spaces will house these institutions creating opportunities for shared resources and unique collaborations. Year-round enrichment offerings, including workshops, conferences, lectures and non-credit courses will attract community members and tourists.

Villa Maria will be renovated for student residence by fall of 2018. The dorm will be used for permanent student housing as well as short-stay housing to support low-residency graduate programs.

Elizabeth “Beth” Brownlie Crocker ‘65 Elizabeth “Beth” Brownlie Crocker ’65 remembers her time at Marylhurst with immense gratitude, saying “my time at Marylhurst was extraordinary — the stellar education I received at Marylhurst University prepared me completely for my thirty-three years as an educator. Every day of teaching was an honor and memory I cherish!” The extremely high standards and expectation of the teachers, alongside their dedication, knowledge, teaching techniques and classroom management left a deep impression upon her. The camaraderie and connections with other students and teachers provided a close-knit community in which to flourish. These were gifts to her and her students as she strived to model her own teaching practices after her teachers. After graduating from Marylhurst, Crocker left on a Greyhound bus to her dream come true — a classroom in Medford, Oregon, full of 47 precious third graders. Years passed since that first class, and she taught K-6 graders, and worked with Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian and Vietnamese refugee and bilingual Spanish students in Oregon with aplomb thanks to her education. The gift of the Sisters’ education is certainly one that has come back around to bless her. Despite the decades that had passed, when her dear husband Bill died in 2013, one of those precious third graders from her very first class in Medford sent a gift. It was the book “A Grief Observed” by C. S. Lewis. With the gift was an inspiring letter that she will keep forever! This is the kind of impact a Marylhurst education inspires. Crocker ruminates on her education, saying “how can I begin to thank my university for the gift they gave me and continue to give? I find the Legacy Society provides a perfect way for me to express my profound gratitude. God Bless the Holy Names Sisters! God Bless Marylhurst University!” If you are interested in joining the 1893 Legacy Society, or have questions about our planned giving services, please call the Office of University Advancement at 503.699.6251.

THREE PERSPECTIVES ON THE MARYLHURST MBA PROGRAM

What, in your opinion, is the role of business schools in today’s world? How do they serve the community? “Business has the ability to transform societies, and in educating future leaders, business schools are uniquely positioned to shape the direction of that transformation. As the pressures of our world grow exponentially, the need for ethical, thoughtful leaders who consider the full impact of their decisions is critical. Business schools not only develop community leaders but also have the ability to support the community in a broader way, as partners to help develop a robust economy and support economic growth in a region. The way a business school responds to the needs of its community – for-profit, nonprofit and community organizations – can accelerate the impact of investments and help make our world a better place. Our business school is small, and therefore can be nimble and responsive to student, employer and community needs. I’m excited to get started down this path.” – Anne Ruybalid, Director, School of Business

What is the heart of your teaching philosophy? Why do you teach at Marylhurst? “Teaching in the MBA and undergraduate business program is fulfilling because our students are so motivated! As someone whose own path into higher education was non-traditional and began mid-career, I can relate to our students’ efforts to balance school, work, family and other social relationships. It’s not easy, and once they make the commitment, their time with us needs to count. Working with them entails keeping things current, relevant and rigorous. I strive to help our students sharpen their problem-solving skills and that involves taking risks. My role is to challenge them to leave their comfort zones, embrace a bit more ambiguity than some would prefer, and explore alternate approaches to tackling complex situations encountered by organizational managers and leaders in the 21st century business environment. This requires critical thinking, collaboration, innovation and multi-stakeholder perspective. I’ve noticed as they reach the end of the program, they often express renewed interest in a livelihood that ensures their values align with their work – it’s so inspiring!” – Susan Marcus, Associate Professor, School of Business

What are you doing now, and what are your plans for the future? “Currently, I am pursuing my Masters of Business Administration in Sustainable Business at Marylhurst University. I will be entering my second and final year of the program this fall. I adore this program, from its user-friendly online platform to its reasonable tuition rate. I take every opportunity to suggest it to friends, colleagues, and any stranger I meet that wishes to further their education. In addition to being a full-time student, I am an entrepreneur with a start-up events company called Lyra’s Social Gaming & Events, and a researcher/writer for a socially conscious blog, RelatableStories.com. After completion of this program, I plan to immediately enter into a doctoral program in order to contribute, and hopefully further, the field of sustainable business.” – Ashlan Smith, current MBA student and Miller Scholarship recipient

NEW HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Educating Future Leaders of the Industry By John A. Erickson ’08, Program Director, Hospitality Management Identified as one of the fastest growing industries in Oregon and the United States, the hospitality industry has been underserved by Oregon’s higher education community for many years. Hospitality encompasses a multitude of businesses that everyone encounters wherever they travel, are entertained, socialize, meet, travel, dine or enjoy the outdoors. The people who work in hospitality are more visible than 70% of all workers in all businesses that are not part of hospitality. The least visible hospitality professionals are those in management roles. It is their responsibility to make sure that the delivery of service and hospitality is seamless to you, who are their organization's guests, members and customers. Hospitality management is a 24-hour, year-round business responsibility. To accomplish the task of managing for a profitable outcome takes intelligence, experience, education and some luck. Through this new program Marylhurst delivers the tools necessary for future leaders of the industry to successfully manage a hospitality business. The education provided, combined with our students’ experience, delivers graduates poised to succeed as professionals in hospitality management. Throughout the hospitality industry managers are required to strategically plan, budget, market, train and deliver exceptional experiences while competing in one of the most competitive industries of the world. As we have seen and heard recently, many countries depend on tourism for much of their livelihood. Hospitality managers are responsible for transportation, housing, food production and many other highly respected components of the world’s economy. Hospitality business leaders understand logistics, project planning, execution, cost controls, human resources, analytical thinking and data analysis to provide jobs that drive industrial growth around the world.

16 | marylhurst.edu | events.marylhurst.edu

Hospitality management jobs are expected to grow between 5% and 10% nationally in the next decade and even higher in Oregon. Based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics & O*NET Online

Marylhurst will be educating leaders who have already attained some experience in the industry. Our students have identified hospitality as the profession at which they wish to excel — they aim to become professional managers and leaders in the hospitality industry of the future. By completing a degree in Hospitality Management at Marylhurst, our students will have earned their place at the front of the line for advancement in this exciting profession. Marylhurst’s Hospitality Management program curriculum is designed to add the educational tools necessary for our students to compete at the highest level of professional responsibilities in the industry. Upon entering our program students will have achieved experience in the industry and some level of higher educational credits, but may not yet have achieved a bachelor's degree. Capitalizing on the well-respected and established foundations of Marylhurst’s school of business, hospitality management students will learn from professionals in the hospitality industry as adjunct instructors along with foundations of business from our present faculty. The practical knowledge of the curriculum will be enhanced through intense study and research for applied use in all learning outcomes for each course completed. Gaining specific new skills in ethical decision-making, strategic thinking and application of proven management approaches to human resources and asset management will establish Marylhurst students as highly desired management candidates in this fast-growing industry in Oregon and the world.

HOSPITALITY PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT Marylhurst understands a balanced approach to student and industry needs is a winwin; students graduate equipped with relevant knowledge and experience, and employers are able to hire employees with the skill sets they need. This program and its partners are a reflection of this dedication; three of them have generously offered scholarships opportunities to students enrolled in this program: “Own Every Moment” - Hospitality Management Scholarship Sponsored by Provenance Hotels - $3,000 Has a sophomore, junior or senior college standing U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident Demonstrates financial need Travel Portland Education Foundation Scholarship - $2,500 Culturally diverse student Has a sophomore, junior or senior college standing U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident Demonstrates financial need Oregon Mt. Hood Territory - Excellence in Hospitality Management Scholarship - $2,500 (x2) Has a sophomore, junior or senior college standing U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident Demonstrates financial need Enrolled for at least 8 credits per semester Resident or employee of Clackamas County

IN MEMORIAM

REMEMBERING SISTER JANE ELLEN BURNS Sister Jane Ellen Burns, SNJM ‘48, former Marylhurst College English professor died August 19, 2017. Sister taught in Holy Names Sisters’ high schools in The Dalles, Salem, Portland, Spokane and Seattle. During this time, she completed a B.A. from Marylhurst College and an M.A. in English from Gonzaga University. In 1959, her proficiency as an English teacher led to an appointment to Marylhurst College, and she spent 14 years on the English faculty and serving for a time as department chair. She is well remembered by alumnae as advisor to the Tower, the student newspaper, and the Fountain, the college yearbook. When Marylhurst transitioned in 1974, Sister taught in Hong Kong and in Salem. In 1978 she left the continent for a decade to teach English at Junshin Junior College, Kagoshima, Japan, a highlight of her life. On returning, she went to Mt. Angel Seminary and for 12 years edited Seminary publications and worked with students as thesis editor. She received their highest honor, the Lumen Gentium Award, in 2005 for her service. Upon retiring, Sister continued working with seminary students and became primary writer for Ventures, a Holy

In recent years, Sister Jane Ellen was a regular attendee at the Sisters Tea at Reunion Weekend and other university events. She was recognized in 2013 as a Distinguished Alumna for service to Marylhurst. Most significant to those who knew Sister Jane Ellen was her gift of herself as friend and mentor. Over many decades she maintained close relationships with many of her former students, especially many Marylhurst alums; friendships she treasured to her last days.

Many thanks to Sr. Carole Strawn, SNJM ’69, ’12 for this beautiful remembrance.

SAYING GOODBYE TO JIM SCHMITT James “Jim” Schmitt September 27, 1952-May 24, 2017 A talented and passionate musician and instructor, Jim Schmitt taught voice and kept the pianos perfectly tuned at Marylhurst University from 1989 until he passed in 2017. Jim’s family, who has many fond memories of Marylhurst, are in the process of setting up a scholarship in his honor. “Dad so looked forward to the time he spent on the campus. The music he made throughout the years with his colleagues and friends was something he found immense joy in. And he had a special place in his heart for each of his students. He dearly loved teaching; the excitement and joy in his studio was contagious, and when a student learned something new he nearly busted at the seams with pride. Some of his great passions in life were tuning pianos, singing, and teaching, and Marylhurst was such an integral part of his getting to pursue these skills.

“The people of Marylhurst University are truly the heart and soul of that treasured place, and our family feels that every time we visit. Some of dad’s closest and dearest friends are part of the Marylhurst family. We will never forget how a group of Marylhurst singers, colleagues, and students came to our house to sing for Dad in his last days; it was a gift that we will treasure forever.” - The James Schmitt Family (wife Bonnie and kids Nick, Evie, Nathan, David, Ansu, and Satta) If you would like to contribute to the Jim Schmitt music scholarship, please contact the Office of University Advancement at spittenger@marylhurst.edu or 503.699.6251, or visit www.marylhurst.edu/donate.
