What others say about us...

Letter From the E.D. I’m a perfectionist at heart. It has taken me years to overcome my need to be perfect in everything I do. I passed on my perfectionism to my children. Seeing them upset when things go wrong or when they fail reminds me of how I used to be and how hard and demanding I was as a mother.

Kim Harris I had the pleasure of working with some of the women at The Women's Intercultural Center and I must say that they were super helpful and professional! Mary Carter and her team worked alongside members from Project Back to School to help distribute backpacks. They offered their space to us for distribution and then went above and beyond by also providing volunteers for us. Their building was also beautiful and clean, making this an overall AWESOME experience!

It took me a while to realize that it’s okay to fail. When I was younger I was terrified of not being perfect so I did everything I could to never mess up; but when I did...I did it royally. I would fall flat on my face. My mess up or my failure would make up for the other 364 days of the year that I was mess up/ failure free. Now as I’ve gotten older I fess-up. I accept my human imperfection and admit to my mistakes. In doing so, I have gained strength to meet and overcome my frustrations whenever things don’t go my way or when I fail. Fessing up has made me accountable, it has been part of my spiritual and emotional growth. I am continuously growing, gaining insight, and learning from my daily experiences. I’ve learned to accept my failures as my greatest life lessons. I’ve chosen to learn from failure rather than to let it frustrate and crush me. This is why I encourage the participants of the Women’s Intercultural Center to fess up about their messes and failures. Together we find a way to find out what that experience will teach them. We work very hard to help women improve themselves and in doing so we provide fess-up friendship through our peer support network. In doing so we teach them that their mess ups/failures are never final, but opportunities to learn and do better the next time.

Please join us in prayer for Daisy Solis, former WInC volunteer, and her family as her new born son battles for his life.

Psychologist Miriam Rivas de Madrid doing an interactive activity on self-esteem with the girls.

Feminine Fuerza Camp Erin Kelso, former Border Awareness Participant, facilitated the camp during her stay in the El Paso area. Guest speakers presented on an array of topics such as dealing with health issues, self-esteem, planning for college, scholarship applications, and so much more. Presentations favored by participants Psychologist Miriam Rivas de Madrid had a very interesting presentation. Her personality was also very engaging. The girls really liked her. What really worked about her presentation was that she told her own personal success story about working her way through college and starting her own practice. A story the girls could relate to and be inspired. The girls found the nutrition presentation by NMSU interesting and relevant to their lives. The presentation by WInC Executive Director, Mary Carter, about scholarships was relevant to the girls, all of which were of high school age with a majority already planning to go to college. Special thanks to the presenters, interns, staffers & volunteers that help put this year’s camp together.
