PICTURE A WORLD WITHOUT HOMELESSNESS

OUR MISSION Plymouth Housing Group works to eliminate homelessness and stabilize homeless and very lowincome people in housing by preserving, developing and operating safe, decent, affordable housing, and by providing opportunities for homeless and very low-income people to improve their lives.

Over the 32 years that Plymouth has provided permanent housing to homeless adults, we’ve discovered that keeping people stable in housing over the long term is as much an art as a science. Yes, core elements like a strong financial foundation, skilled professional staff, and a dedicated Board must be in place for housing non-profits like Plymouth Housing Group to be successful. But homelessness will only end when vigorous community commitment and a collective passion for change are also part of the palette. Now more than ever, we need to not look away as we walk down the street. We must not believe that homelessness will magically go away because it makes us uncomfortable or afraid, or because the problem is so difficult. There is still so much we can do to change the picture. We believe that while we cannot always prevent people from falling into homelessness, we can shorten the time they remain there. To escape homelessness, adults need not just a permanent home, but opportunities to improve their lives as well. They also need us to believe that they are valuable in and of themselves, worthy of our continued support and care. At Plymouth, we pride ourselves on doing just that. 2011 was a good, strong year for Plymouth Housing Group. Although the difficult economic situation our community has experienced is not yet over, our loyal supporters have remained with us. With their help, we renewed our commitment to build more homes and began construction of the new, 84-unit Pat Williams Apartments, slated to open in January 2013 in the South Lake Union neighborhood. This residence is part of Plymouth’s 2011-12 Sustaining Hope Capital Campaign which has brought us invigorating new support. The positive response to the campaign has helped us remain hopeful that our community is not losing sight of the need to work towards a true end to homelessness. To all of you who have shared with us a vision of ending homelessness whether as a volunteer, a donor or a service partner—thank you. Your continued support and partnership is very meaningful to us. Best Regards,

Paul Lambros Executive Director

One of the reasons Plymouth is successful in helping residents regain stability and health is our commitment to community partnerships that provide the tools they need to improve their lives. Using artistic expression to build self-respect

CREATIVE EXPRESSION

Ten years ago, Linda K. would never have imagined that she would be homeless someday. She’s already had several interesting jobs, having supported herself as a legal secretary, a marketing consultant, and a book publisher. But in the background, trouble lurked. When she was in her 50s, depression struck. As her mental and physical health deteriorated, Linda gradually stopped working and she isolated herself from friends and family. By the time she was diagnosed with depression, her condition was so severe that she was disabled. Soon she was homeless, her life a blur of soup kitchens and homeless services. She ended up sleeping in her car and spent her days tracking down free food programs so she could eat. Finally, Linda applied for an apartment at Plymouth and waited. Then the call came in 2011: A studio was available at Plymouth’s new Humphrey House apartments in Belltown. “I’m grateful to Plymouth,” Linda says. “I know I’m one of the lucky ones.” To get her life back on track, Linda needed the kind of daily assistance and support that Plymouth’s staff members provide. “My case manager is fabulous,” she says. “I was having a tough time in the beginning, but she stood up for me.” In Linda’s apartment at Plymouth, her dream of being an artist is becoming a reality. The small studio is devoted to the creation of colorful multimedia works that combine painted backgrounds with photos. She’s been taking classes with Path with Art and is now working with a counselor at the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation on a plan to support herself through selling her artwork. Linda often thinks about the advice given to her by one of her counselors. “She said to me ‘Why don’t you pursue an art career?’” Linda recalls. “That challenge planted the seed for what I’m doing now.”

Since 2009, Plymouth has been working with a vibrant, local non-profit, Path with Art, which offers our residents opportunities to express themselves through many artistic mediums. Path with Art began as a group of local volunteers teaching art classes at a homeless shelter. Seattle-area founders Laurel Doody and Deborah Blake had a dream: use the artistic process as a life-affirming resource for homeless people in distress. The result has been a unique community organization that focuses on helping formerly-homeless people find stability and a renewed sense of self-respect.

Plymouth residents collaborated with Path with Art to create a colorful 10 ft. by 8 ft. mural at Plymouth’s Gatewood Apartments.

Healing partnerships that nourish

BODY AND SOUL Currently, Path with Art offers residents at local housing non-profits a wide selection of classes and creative outings. They also celebrate student work by arranging quarterly gallery events. Classes include instruction in watercolor technique, ceramics, digital photography, Japanese brush painting as well as poetry and writing workshops.

Immediate support for the medically-fragile While groups like Path With Art provide residents with creative outlets for personal discovery, it’s strong partnerships with organizations like the King County Department of Public Health and Neighborcare Health that help Plymouth’s residents improve their health. Many Plymouth residents have chronic health issues that need daily management. Since 2006, Plymouth has worked closely with King County Public Health to provide on-site nursing services for residents. Having professional RNs available has made a huge difference for Plymouth residents, providing them with immediate treatment, wound care, flu shots, as well as consultation and health education.

“Our partnerships with Seattle/King County Public Health and Neighborcare Health have resulted in improved health for residents,” comments Plymouth’s Director of Policy Tara Connor. “Many people who come to live here have multiple chronic illnesses and physical injuries following years of surviving on the streets.”

Out of the hospital into a home, not onto the streets One of the major health issues that homeless adults face is the lack of appropriate housing for those recovering from hospitalization or surgery. Too often, homeless people are discharged out into the streets where they are unable to care for themselves properly. The result is often a return to the emergency room or hospital, resulting in increased health risk and higher costs to our community. Because Plymouth has an on-site nursing care program, we can bring people directly out of the hospital into safe housing where they are immediately connected to medical care and benefits. This life-saving program which began at the Plymouth on Stewart building in 2006 will expand to Humphrey House in 2012. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Who lived at Plymouth Housing Group in 2011? The majority of Plymouth’s residents became homeless due to a perfect storm of personal, medical and economic issues that rendered them unable to maintain stable lives. Most find a home at Plymouth after many years of homelessness. Permanent housing plus wrap-around support services are the key to moving people out of homelessness forever. At Plymouth, residents find the support they need to get on their feet again, receiving on-site case management, access to nursing care, and connection to community services such as mental health and medical care, chemical dependency counseling, and financial benefits.

Cynthia L. slept in shelters or on the streets for years until finally an older sister persuaded her to get medical help. She was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. It was through her treatment program that she heard about Plymouth Housing Group. Cynthia was on the waiting list for nearly a year, but in August 2011 she was told she could move into her own apartment. “I am really grateful to Plymouth,” she says. “Now that I have a safe, secure place, it’s giving me stability and getting me ready to take care of more things in life.”
