Paris

Lady Lavish begins her journey in Paris, France. So many call it the city of lights and she is making it brighter with her infectious style. While fliting around the city she travels through time by visiting the period that began modern style La Belle Epoque. And during that time a King of Fashion ruled his magical kingdom of exotic wear. Paul Poiret heralded in the 2oth century and helped create a style and woman that was luxuriousiously bohemian. Just as the exotic inspired him to create new designs, the 21st Century designers are being inspired by different eras and lands. The Lady casts her magic over Parisians by going to cafes, shopping, fashion shows, cocktail parties and themed balls.

La Belle Epoque ... the feminine, symbolical of the accelerated rhythm of life: everything was in movement - forms and lines, house facades and furniture. Ornaments of naked female bodies and creepers, poppies and lilies spiralled and twined convulsively on cupboards, bookbindings and dress fabrics. The colours were light, transparent, with a gleam of mother -of-pearl and iridescent white. That was the new art, known alternately according to the country of its origin as l’art nouveau, Modern Style or Jugendstil. Anny LaTour, Kings of Fashion pg. 161

Belle Epoque started in 1900 and lasted until the WWI. It was considered the Golden Age in France. A time when Paris entered the future with elegance and lavishness. It was in constrast to the more strict time of Edwardian and Golden Age in New York. France was celebrating when the rest of the world was working. And I believe that is what gives it Joie de Vivre. They celebrate life and art. Fashion is considered ART. Designers are revered as artists making fashion King and Queen. This season the runways of Pret-a-Porter & Haute Couture sent designs down the runway that were in keeping with this history. Some designers harkened back to the past while others looked to the future. Our Lady has appeared on the scene to celebrate life in fashion.

Paul Poiret The man who freed women from the bonds of the corset and captivated with lush colours and fabrics. He introduced into fashion what was taking Paris by storm at the beginning of the 20th Century Orientalism. It was a fascination with things from Russia, China, India, South Seas and so much more. He gave women turbans and feathers to wear in their hair. He believed in the natural form of the womans body without the help of the corset. He was a true French man and ruled haute couture from 1903 - 1914.

Paul Poiret

The Maiden will be attending an event at Les Arts Decoratifs where they hold some of the finest Poiret Gowns of the Belle Epoque period. Recently the Met in New York curated a retrospective of his work and it set off a frenzy of interest in his designs. However, there is a misconception that he was a Flapper Designer. No, he was not. His height of fame was during 1903 - 1914. After the war his designs were seen as outdated for the simple modern woman. However, this season we are seeing a trend towards a true more Poiret look in some of the Parisian Designers color, fabrics and silhouettes.

Maison Michel is a Millinery started in Paris, France by Hat maker Auguste Michel. In 1936 this establishment was set up at 65 Rue St. Anne. Quickly it became a supplier of exquisite millinery for top Haute Couture Houses. In 1996 Chanel acquired this prestigious establishment. In 2006 Laetitia Crahay took over as artistic director. The house has established international fame with the Lace Mask & Bunny Ear headpiece. It set off a trend that has been much imitated. They continue to set the trends in headwear and we are so glad. It has added sensual Parisian Wit to women’s headwear the world over.

While staying in Paris all of The Lady’s formal functions will be supplied by this rising star Couturier. Ulyana has been dubbed a flash in the pan by some as being too fairytale. But we could not disagree more. Her haute designs speak volumes to the needs of todays romantic woman. She wants women to be seen. Ulyana dresses them in a way that encompasses romantic notions and wearable clothing.

London & England Our Lady Lavish has landed in London. She will shop around LondonTown and then venture to The Faerie Ball in Somerset. London is known for it’s Queen, Punk Rock and fashion schools. She takes the time to dress to impress and party. And get in a proper tea. London has fostered a culture of rich aristocracy and gentry in all society. Their history of strick tailoring has always set them apart in the design world. Many famous designers from the 19th-21st centuries have been influenced by a great cut and fit. Queen Elizabeth I was very influential in fashion then and now. Her opulent taste was deemed Elizabethan and has influenced many catwalk looks. However, it was during the Edwardian Period that men’s tailoring influenced women’s wear. The popularity of the BBC Downton Abbey has created an interest in this era of fashion. It happened at the same time as the Belle Epoque in Paris, France. The styles during this time were airy and tight fitting. London is also the place that gave birth to the IT Girl London Look that was much sought after in the 1960s. However, it was Alexander McQueen and his vision that we believe catapulted London into modern chic and design. His historical goth references have influenced so many fashion designers and fashionistas the world over. So take a stroll with our Lady through some of the best of Fall 2013.

She has to get her proper tea while in and about London. During shopping jaunts, she pops into the Chelsea Teapot for tea & treats. And she chooses to stay at Claridge’s, so for a proper afternoon tea she ventures down to the tearoom and joins a few friends for a mad hatter time.

This is the English afternoon tea of your wildest imagination. Situated in the Foyer and Reading Room, everything is perfect from the glamour of the Art Deco interior to the live music and quintessentially English menu. It's little wonder we have consecutively been given an Award of Excellence by the Tea Guild. 29

Faerie Ball & Fayres The Lady Lavish relishes in dreaming about the wee folk or Faeries. Faeries are magical ethereal people that many cultures believe existed and still do. Across Europe and the United States Faerie Costume Balls & Fayres are held to celebrate this folklore. And it’s an opportune time to dress in whimsy dresses with wings and crowns. This movement is happening along the lines of Steampunk. The styles of both are influencing trends in dresses and headwear. Futhermore, Fall & All Hallows Eve are great times to celebrate nature, woodland life and wear fancy costumes.
