Media Guidelines Credentials Members of the media with valid press credentials will be admitted to the Herd’s three home facilities There is limited space at the official scorer’s table, so seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For games at Appalachian Power Park, please contact Marshalll Sports Information at least one day prior to game to request a credential. lnterviews To set up an interview with a player on non-game days, please contact Marshalll Sports Information. Interviews will either be conducted in person in the Sports Info office or at practice, pending availability of reporter and athlete/coach. Game Day Coach Waggoner and requested players will be available for interviews on the field before batting practice begins, which is usually two and a half hours prior to the game. All interviews must be finished by the start of batting practice. Please contact the sports information office to request players and to confirm batting practice times. MU Sports lnformation The Marshall Sports Information office will provide updated statistics, scorecards, team rosters and gameday notes prior to each game. Final game statistics also will be provided at the conclusion of each home game. For additional post-game information, please contact a member of Marshall’s Sports Information staff.

in remembrance Marshall mourns the loss of Dr. Stephen J. Kopp, the Marshall University president who died suddenly on Dec. 17, 2014 after serving MU for 9 1/2 years . 2014 milestones - Then-sophomore relief pitcher Caleb Ross became the All-Time leader in single season appearances and was in the Top 10 in the nation with 36. - Coach Jeff Waggoner became the second winningest coach in Marshall history, with 177 wins during his tenure. Waggoner begins his ninth season with the program. -Then-freshman Corey Bird became the sixth member of the Herd program to earn C-USA All-Freshman team honors, leading the team in batting avg. (.292), stolen bases (15) and hits (49). Bird was second in C-USA for stolen bases, falling just one bag shy of league-leader. - Marshall opened up league play with a series win (2-1 over East Carolina) for the first time since 2009. The Herd won four C-USA series in 2014: ECU, FAU, Tulane, and LA Tech and a total of 10 conference games. -Then-junior and then-sophomore Kolin Stanley and Sam Hunter also entered MU Record books, tying for 5th in single-season appearances with 29. - Then-junior Matt Margaritonda became the fourth Herd hurler to win C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors after a standout performance against ECU, where he tossed a complete game, recording a career-high 11 Ks and faced just two batters over the minimum. 2015 QUICK FACTS

-Starting pitcher Chase Boster and relief pitcher Kolin Stanley were named to the Perfect Game Collegiate All-America Third Team after their summer performances with the West Virginia Miners, of the Prospect League. Boster posted a 0.74 ERA with a 5-2 record, and Stanley collected ten saves with a 0.00 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched.

Conference USA will field 12 teams in 2015, as the league celebrates its 20-year anniversary: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTSA and WKU. • Conference USA has been ranked as the No. 5 baseball conference in the RPI in all but two seasons since 2006. It was the No. 8 ranked conference in 2014. • C-USA has placed at least four teams in the NCAA Championship nine times in the past 13 years, producing five teams on two occasions. • Rice made its 20th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance in 2013, the fourth-longest active streak in the nation. • Rice spent the entire 2014 season nationally ranked and was joined in the regular season rankings by FIU, Florida Atlantic and UAB. • Seven C-USA teams ranked in the top 90 of the final RPI rankings and nine teams were among the top 103. • Nine Conference USA teams won at least one game against a nationally ranked opponent during the 2014 season. • C-USA teams posted a total of 18 wins over nationally ranked, non-conference opponents during the regular season, including seven against top 10 foes. • Old Dominion defeated then-No. 1 Virginia, 8-1, on April 29, marking the league’s first win over a No. 1 team since 2009. It was the ninth time in league history that a C-USA school has defeated the nation’s top-ranked team. • C-USA played 27 of the teams ranked among the top 50 in the final NCAA RPI rankings, posting wins vs. 19. The 2015 Conference USA Championship will return to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the fifth time in the league’s history. Southern Miss also hosted the 2014, 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format consists of two double-elimination brackets, with a single-elimination championship game.

Pete Taylor Park Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field has been the home of Southern Miss baseball since 1984, when the facility was opened. “The Pete” as it is nicknamed, has seated more than a million fans who have entered its gates. During that time, the Golden Eagles have been regularly among the top teams in the nation in attendance. The stadium features chairback seating for 2,054 fans and bleacher seating for 1,212, after its current renovation prior to the 2012 season. The facility upgrade extended the main grandstand past each dugout to give it a more overall stadium look. The extended grandstands eliminated the bleacher seating that had been utilized down each of the base lines. The stadium also has a popular right field lounge area known as the “Right Field Roost,” which has reserved parking for 40 vehicles and is equipped with barbeque grills.

STARTING ROTATION Marshall will head into the 2015 season with a starting rotation that not only brings experience, but also some variety.

Junior Chase Boster, a Third-Team Collegiate All-American this past summer, will be looked upon to be one of the anchor’s of the Herd’s weekend rotation. Boster spent time at the beginning of the season in the bullpen as long relief, but transitioned into a starting role after King’s injury. Boster posted a 2-3 record in 2014 and collected 30 strikeouts. Adding more experience is senior Matt Margaritonda. The Freehold, N.J., native started in a team-high 13 games, and earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing his first complete game, recording a career-high 11 Ks and faced just two batters over the minimum. Margaritonda has spent time as set-up man, closer, and relief during his earlier seasons with Marshall before making his first collegiate start at the end of his sophomore season against nationally ranked Rice. The rewarding of another year of eligibility for now-redshirt senior Josh King certainly has the Herd rotation feeling better than expected. King will not throw immediately, but is expected to make a big impact down the stretch once he is 100% healthy. The Troup, Ga., native underwent Tommy John surgery after just six games last season, giving Marshall its most veteran player an unexpected final season. Junior college transfer JD Hammer will also be looked upon to start. The Fort Collins, Colo., native boasted a 1.09 ERA last season at Navarro Junior College in Texas. Redshirt junior Lance Elder will also provide depth in a starting role. The righty spent time as a weekend starter during his rookie campaign, and upon returning to the diamond after missing 2013 due to injury, started in four games while appearing in 11 others. Also thrown in the mix are transfers Callaway Kirkpatrick and Heston Van Fleet, both hailing from Texas’ Paris Junior College.

BULLPEN After a spectacular season, junior southpaw Caleb Ross will lead the relief staff in 2015. The All-Time Leader in Single Season Appearances at Marshall, Ross threw in 36 games last season, allowing just four runs for a 2.29 ERA. The Barboursville, W.Va., native made 25 consecutive appearances without allowing a run.

Senior Clint Wilson will also provide veteran experience out of the pen. Wilson appeared in 26 games last season, and could be the Herdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s go-to arm for long relief. Junior Michael Taylor, after spending his first two seasons as a starter, has moved into the bullpen and could receive ample work on the mound. Redshirt senior Kolin Stanley, another Third-Team Collegiate All-American, will also be called upon, after appearing in 29 games last season for the Herd. The Beloit, Ohio, native picked up 10 saves while in the Prospect League and boasted a 0.00 ERA. CATCHER 2014 Johnny Bench Award Watchlist member Matt Reed returns as the Herdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backstop. The redshirt sophomore emerged as a threat behind the plate, finishing 2014 third in C-USA with 17 runners caught stealing and allowing just eight passed balls all season. Junior Aaron Bossi, who has spent his first two seasons as an infielder, and freshman Tyler Ratliff will serve as additional catching options.

FIRST BASE Big guy TJ Diffenderfer will continue to reign at first base. The senior posted a .990 fielding percentage (highest among position players) and raked in four homers and three triples while at the plate. The Mount Tenn., native needs just three triples to crack into the Marshall All-Time top ten. Junior transfer Ryne Dean will also see time at first. Dean was awarded 2014 Preseason All-American honors during his tenure with Fresno City

College.

SECOND BASE The middle infield position looks to be up for grabs, with four contenders all vying for time at second base.

THIRD BASE After spending his first three years holding down second base, senior Andrew Dundon transitions to the corner bag for 2015. Dundon has started 155 of 158 games he has played for Marshall, and is one of six players in the nation to have started 150 games or more. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native led the squad in runs (21) and was second on the team with 45 hits.

King, who played the position in high school, may see some time at the bag, and quick-gloved Bossi could also get work. Junior transfer DJ Gee, a 2014 All-American first team honoree, and freshman Chad Roberts, are also in the competition.

SHORTSTOP After hailing at short for nearly his entire Herd career, senior Sergio Leon returns to the position for his final season. The Miami native recorded 10 multihit games in 2014 and boast a .242 career batting average. Leon is coming off his best year in the field, committing just seven errors and boasting a .966 fielding percentage. Freshman Andrew Bladt will serve as Leonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backup. LEFT FIELD The corner outfields once again present some competition, as the combination of redshirt junior Robert Fajardo, sophomore transfer Billy Sager, and freshman Austin Norman will all split time at the spot. Fajardo appeared in 42 games last season, starting 33 of them in left. Another Miami product, Fajardo was second on the 2014 squad with a .264 batting average and 20 runs scored. Sager comes to the Herd from Potomac State Junior College, where he hit .390 with four home runs and 33 RBI with the Catamounts. Norman, a Fairmont, W.Va., native, posted a .417 batting average his senior season, supplying 50 RBI and 12 home runs while leading his high school to the state title game. CENTER FIELD After a standout rookie campaign, sophomore Corey Bird will again anchor the outfield at center. The C-USA All-Freshman selection was second in the league with 15 stolen bases and led the Herd with a .292 batting average. Another in-state outfielder, Bird also led the squad with 49 hits and posted a team-high 16 game on-base streak. RIGHT FIELD Another combination ensues in the right field position, with Norman, Fajardo and sophomore Cory Garrastazu all looking to receive time. Garrastazu emerged as a top contributor during his collegiate debut, coming off the bench in opening weekend going 4-for-8 with four RBI, a run, and a double. The Miamian posted a .321 average, collecting 17 hits in 53 at bats before going down for the year with an injury. Once fully healthy, Garrastazu could get the most time at right. DESIGNATED HITTER In the event he is not filling in for Diffenderfer at first, Dean will take over the role of DH this season after a .305 batting average, seven homeruns, 43 RBI season at Fresno City. Sager could also see time at the position when not in the outfield. UTILITY Gee and Bossi will both certainly be utilized for their abilities. Gee could play multiple positions in the infield and outfield, with Bossi serving as an option in the infield or behind the plate. Roberts could also see some utility work.

jeff #30 waggoner Head Coach Ninth Season Cleveland State â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;98 Head coach Jeff Waggoner enters his ninthseason at the helm of the Marshall baseball program. In eight seasons, he has compiled a 177-256-1record along with a birth to the Conference USA Championship in 2008. His 177 victories are the secondmost in program history. After the 2013 season, Waggoner saw two Thundering Herd players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. A total of 12 players were selected over the last three seasons, while 26 of his student-athletes have received an opportunity to play professional baseball under his tutelage. Aaron Blair (first supplemental round - 36th overall - to the Arizona Diamondbacks) and Isaac Ballou (15th round to the Washington Nationals), the 2013 draftees, became the 14th and 15th members of the Herd to be selected after serving on one of Waggoner's teams. One year prior, pitchers Joe Church (17th round to the San Diego Padres) and Mike Mason (24th round to the Colorado Rockies) were selected. Waggoner's last three teams have produced All-Conference performers, with Blair and Ballou garnering All-Conference USA first team honors in 2013 after Blair and Sergio Leon were named All-Freshmen in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The 2011 season featured eight players who would go on to be drafted by MLB teams and two players who were signed as free agents. Greg Willams (Texas Rangers), Mike Mason (Texas Rangers), Joe Church (Los Angeles Angels), Isaac Ballou (Pittsburgh Pirates), Kenny Socorro (Chicago Cubs), Arik Sikula (Toronto Blue Jays), Shane Farell (Toronto Blue Jays), Rhett Stafford (Oakland Athletics) were each drafted in the 2011 MLB, marking the most drafted players in a season in Marshall baseball history. Victor Gomez (Atlanta Braves) and Ian Kadish (Toronto Blue Jays) were also picked up by big league teams as free agents. Along with the most drafted players in a season, Waggoner's club had four players earn Conference USA honors. Kenny Socorro was selected to the All-Conference USA team as an infielder and freshman, Aaron Blair, was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team. Kyle Blank and Arik Sikula both earned academic recognition through the conference, after being picked to the Conference USA All-Academic team.

A total of 41 records have been broken under Waggoner, including 23 team and 18 individual marks. Waggoner has also posted victories against 13 ranked opponents, including knocking off then No. 1 Rice in 2009. In 2010, MU defeated No. 17 Ohio State and No. 25 Rice during the regular season. In 2012, Waggoner led Marshall to a senior day victory over No. 13 UCF. In 2013, his squad topped No. 19 Houston in games one and two of a three-game series. In 2007, during his second season at Marshall, Waggoner led the Herd to 30 wins, the most in program history. The Herd notched a 30-30-1 overall record and finished sixth in C-USA with a 10-13-1 mark, and a berth in the 2008 Entergy C-USA Baseball Championship tournament hosted by Tulane. At the tournament, Marshall defeated third-seeded Tulane twice, and second-seeded Southern Miss twice, before falling to Houston in the championship game, 3-2. All three of those teams were NCAA Regional participants in 2008, while the Herd finished one run shy of its first NCAA Regional appearance since 1978. For his efforts, Waggoner was named All-Pavlovich Team Coach of the Year in "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper. During his seven seasons with the Herd, 24 Marshall players/signees have been given a chance to play at the professional level. In the 2010 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, Kevin Shackelford, Ryan Kiel and Aaron Blair were selected. Other notable players drafted include Steven Blevins, Tommy Johnson and Nate Lape in 2008, while Eddie Rush and Dan Straily were picked in 2009. Straily is one of a dozen currently playing at the next level and has made his way into the Major Leagues. The right-handed arm spent two seasons at Double-A Midland before being promoted to Triple-A Sacramento during the summer of 2012. Straily ultimately received a call from the Oakland Athletics and pitched in 39.1 innings over seven starts at the conclusion of the 2012 season before becoming a regular member of the A's rotation in 2013. Prior to the 2010 campaign, the Herd placed three players (Blevins, Lape and Gomez) on All-C-USA teams, while two (Lape and Gomez) were named to all All-Mideast Region squads. Adam Yeager, Gomez

and Lape have all played summer ball in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. In his first season with the Herd, Waggoner led the squad to a 21-32 record which included a 15-11 mark at home. The Alliance Ohio native helped lead Marshall to a 5-18 record in C-USA picking up series wins against both Memphis and Houston, and picked up a win against UCF. Before taking over the head coaching position at Marshall, Waggoner spent two seasons as an assistant with the nationally-ranked North Carolina State University Wolfpack.

Cleveland State. Waggoner received his master's degree in Educational Psychology from St. Rose in 2001. He has two daughters, Kacee and Madelyn.

Before his arrival in Raleigh, Waggoner spent two seasons at Kent State University. The Golden Flashes captured the 2004 MAC Tournament Championship during his tenure and also had seven players selected in the Major League Baseball draft, including first round draft pick Emmanuel Burriss who played for the San Fransisco Giants.

He was also an assistant coach at George Washington University from 2000-02, where he helped guide the Colonials to a school record for wins in a season (42) and the Atlantic 10 championship in 2002. George Washington led the A-10 and was among the national leaders in both batting average (.326) and home runs (91) that season. The Colonials posted a two-year record of 80-45 during Waggoner's stay, and five GW players were selected in the MLB draft.

Before his two years at George Washington, Waggoner spent the 2000 season at the College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y., helping St. Rose earn a berth in the Division II College World Series in 2000. Waggoner has worked with two collegiate summer baseball teams. He was the head coach of the Arlington Senators of the Clark Griffith League in 2002, guiding the Senators to a 32-10 regular-season record, the Clark Griffith League championship, and the All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) national championship. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach for the Schenectady Mohawks of the New York Collegiate League in 1999 and 2000. Waggoner lettered two years as a catcher at Cleveland State University, and graduated with a sport management degree in 1998. He played two years at Crowder College in Neosho, Mo., prior to transferring to

tim #27 donnelly Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Ninth Season Hardin Simmons ‘04 Tim Donnelly worked as an assistant coach at Marshall for his first six seasons before being named the program’s Head Recruiting Coordinator during the fall of 2012. Now in his ninth season, Donnelly continues to serve as an assistant coach, working primarily with the infielders while coaching third base. Donnelly has played a vital role in player development at Marshall and has prepared numerous infielders for the next level. Notable players include Emmanuel Burriss, who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round (33rd overall) of the 2006 amateur draft, Drew Saylor, a 13th round draft pick by the Florida Marlins, Andrew Davis, 12th round pick to the Giants, and Kenny Socorro, 44th round pick by the Chicago Cubs. Prior to coming to Marshall, Donnelly spent a year at Kent State as an assistant coach and helped lead the Golden Flashes to the Mid-American Conference Regular-Season championship. During that year Donnelly was responsible for the infielders, assisted in hitting, and was the first base coach. He also handled field maintenance and camp duties. In 2005, he was an assistant coach at Malone College for head coach Tom Crank, where he handled the infielders, hitting and recruiting. His father, Rich Donnelly, has been a Major League Coach for over 25 years and is currently in his first season as the third base coach for the Seattle Mariners.Rich also worked with various MLB teams including the Texas Rangers (1980, 83-85), Pittsburgh Pirates (19861996), Florida Marlins (1997-1998), Colorado Rockies (1999-2002), Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2005), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2006-2007). Donnelly’s two brothers both played collegiate sports. Bubba Donnelly played four years of basketball at Robert Morris College, while his brother Mike was a four-year kicker on the Cumberland College football team. Donnelly earned a bachelor’s degree in sports fitness and leisure studies in 2004 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. There he lettered two seasons on the baseball team under head coach Steve Coleman. He received his associate’s degree in arts and science from Northeast Texas Community College in 2001, and lettered in baseball two seasons for head coach Chad Tidwell.

Pitching Coach Second Season Ohio State â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;04

Newman enters his second season on the Marshall baseball coaching staff and is serving as the Herd pitching coach. Most recently a volunteer assistant at Ohio State, Newman spent three seasons on the Buckeye coaching staff after being hired in July 2010. The Ohio State pitching staff, under the guidance of Newman and pitching coach Mike Stafford, improved dramatically over the last three seasons. After the staff posted a 4.94 ERA in 2011, the Buckeyes improved to a 3.24 ERA in the 2013 campaign. In 2013, Ohio State ranked in the Top 40 nationally in every pitching category including walks per nine innings (8th, 2.45), strikeout-to-walk ratio (15th, 2.75), WHIP (17th, 1.19), hits per nine innings (33rd, 8.29) and ERA (38th, 3.24). Ohio State had three pitchers earn All-Big Ten honors in 2013. Newman has also helped Buckeyes into the next level as righthander John Kuchno was a 2012 18th-round selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates before Brad Goldberg was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 10th round this season and Brett McKinney's 19th round selection by the Pirates.

In his career, Newman helped the Buckeyes to a 161-84-1 record, a Big Ten regular season championship (2001) and two Big Ten Tournament championships (2002 and 2003). Ohio State went to three NCAA Regional tournaments and hosted an NCAA Super Regional (2003) in his four years in Columbus. Newman was drafted in the 19th round of the 2004 MLB Draft and signed a professional contract with the Colorado Rockies. He

The Wheelersburg High School graduate spent three seasons in the minors before making his Major League debut against Philadelphia on Sept. 12, 2007, and making the Colorado Rockies World Series roster that season. He jumped between Triple-A Colorado Springs and the Rockies in 2008 before being claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals in July. Newman pitched in 14 games over his two seasons between Colorado and Kansas City, making his last appearance in September 2008. He and his wife Sarah currently reside in Wheelersburg, Ohio with their two children - Ayda (5) and Kash (3). A native of Wheelersburg, Ohio and a 2004 Ohio State graduate, Newman ranks third all-time at Ohio State in career wins (32), innings pitched (369.0) and strikeouts (291). He was a freshman All-American in 2001 and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, including a first-team selection in 2004.

Brian Karlet joined Marshall's baseball staff as an assistant coach in the fall of 2012. Karlet graduated with a degree in communications from Georgetown College, where he was named to the Mid-South all-conference team at the end of his senior year. Following graduation, Karlet earned a Master's degree in athletic administration while serving as Director of Baseball Operations at Marshall University. After two years with the Thundering Herd (2005-2007), Karlet returned to his alma mater as the top assistant coach for the Tigers. Karlet worked with the team for two seasons before receiving a promotion to

head coach in 2009. Under Karlet's guidance, the Tigers never finished lower than third place in the Mid-South Conference. Karlet sported a 58-56 record at the helm of the Tigers' baseball program and a 35-21 record in conference play. Karlet resides in South Point, Ohio with his wife, Kelley, and two sons, Jaxson and Cooper.

heath storey Graduate Assistant/Director of Ops. First Season Flagler â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;11 Heath Storey joins the program in the fall of 2014 as a graduate assistant manager. A native of Kennett, Mo., Storey attended Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Mo., and helped to lead Vikings to national rankings in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Storey graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Flagler College, where he completed his collegiate career as a relief pitcher for the Saints. This will be Storey's fourth coaching stop.

He served as assistant coach for Ponte Vedra (FL) High School and head coach at North Pemiscot (Mo.) High School before returning to Flagler this past year to serve as an assistant coach. In the summer of 2014, Storey served as the pitching coach for the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game College Baseball League. The Mohawks won the regular season and postseason tournament with a 40-11 record and held a league-leading ERA of 2.59.

Newman Mural Hits Home for Herd Coach By JACK BOGACZYK HerdZone.com Columnist HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Josh Newman says he’s “just a smalltown guy.” OK, but he also formerly pitched in the bigs, and now Newman is larger than life. Newman, the Marshall pitching coach, is one of the latest baseball additions to the floodwall murals in Portsmouth, Ohio, where the visages of Scioto County and surrounding community star athletes are featured in addition to the Ohio River region’s history. The second-year Herd coach will be among those honored Wednesday night at the $50-a-plate Portsmouth Murals Baseball Banquet at the SOMC Life Center. The annual banquet attended by numerous baseball “names” benefits Portsmouth Murals Inc., raising funds for new murals and maintenance of the ones that already adorn the floodwall. Newman, from Wheelersburg, Ohio, joins baseball names like Branch Rickey, Al Oliver, Gene Tenace, Don Gullett and Larry Hisle and umpires Larry Craft and Greg Gibson -among others like Roy Rogers and Jim Thorpe -- on the floodwall. Newman’s likeness in his Rockies’ uniform was painted on the wall late last year by artist Robert Dafford. Dafford worked on the Newman mural from last June and finished in early December. The former Colorado Rockies’ and Kansas City Royals’ left-hander is about 8-9 feet tall on the wall. He took his daughter, Ayda, 6, and son, Kash, 4, to see the mural when it was finished. “To have my kids be able to see that was so special,” Newman said Monday. “My little guy, he’s very inquisitive and he’s like, ‘Why are you on the wall?’ And my daughter went up to it – and what really made me get emotional -- is she went up and 62

hugged it and gave it a kiss. “I’ve always been very blessed, having great family and friends, and my kids are very special to me. My daughter got to see me play a little bit when she was a baby. Now, what they’ve seen is clips on the MLB Network of Carlos Quentin trying to charge the mound on me (in a Triple A game in July 2007).” Newman, 32, starred at Wheelersburg High for Ohio High School Hall of Fame Coach Jack Branon, and after his 2000 graduation headed to Ohio State, where he was a three-time All-Big Ten pitcher for NCAA Tournament teams. He signed as a Buckeyes’ senior in 2004, a 19th-round draft pick by the Rockies. In 2007, Newman was recalled from Triple A in September and made his Major League debut on Sept. 12 against Philadelphia. With the Rockies wanting another lefty in the bullpen for the postseason, Newman was kept on the active roster, and he received a World Series ring as Boston swept Colorado. The next season, he bounced between the Majors and Class AAA with Colorado before being waived and he was claimed in July 2008 by Kansas City. In his two big league seasons, Newman worked 17 2/3 innings in 14 games. He then got into coaching at his alma mater and was a volunteer coach for the Buckeyes before moving to Marshall prior to last season. His only previous connection to the Herd – other than being an area native (born in Portsmouth) was being recruited as a football linebacker by Coach Bob Pruett and staff. “When I got the opportunity to come back here to coach, lot of people questioned why I’d leave Ohio State to come here,” said Newman, who starts the 2015 season with Coach Jeff Waggoner and the Herd on Feb. 13-15 at Florida A&M. “This is a special place for me, it’s where I grew up, the Tri-State, where I have so many awesome memories.

I’ve had so many family members and friends help me along the way. Coach Jack Branon, a man of faith, took me under his wing and taught me there’s more to life than just baseball. Now, people go by the floodwall and tell me they saw me up there. That’s awesome. I almost don’t know what to say.”

“The murals that I grew up with in Scioto County, that is kind of our claim to fame, you know? All the steel mills and manufacturing and manual labor have pretty much moved out of the region. It’s still a tight-knit community and that floodwall is something that’s always been kind of a claim to fame for us.” So, just how did Newman get on that floodwall? “When I got the call wanting me to send my baseball cards to them as a sample, it was almost surreal,” Newman said. “We didn’t believe it at first. They first called right after our (Marshall) season ended. My wife, Sarah, went and met with the painter, and he said the City of Portsmouth was looking into wanting to put me up the wall. The (Portsmouth Area) Chamber of Commerce had contacted me. “I’m just a small-town guy. It’s still kind of hard to fathom, growing up there, seeing the murals, the stars on there, the names. It’s pretty cool to be with them. It’s one of those things where you don’t want to believe it.” Initially, he didn’t. “My first thought was, ‘My buddies are pranking me,’” Newman said, laughing. “My thought is, ‘Who’s (phone) number is this? Who’s doing this?’ But they were just persistent and I thought maybe it wasn’t a prank. “We took my baseball cards down there, met with the painter and the Chamber of Commerce. They called me back when it was completed … I get emotional just talking about it.” And he hasn’t talked much. Asked about the Newman mural over the weekend, his fellow Marshall assistant coaches didn’t know anything about the distinction. “I told the people for the banquet, ‘I’ll do anything you want, but I don’t want it to be about me,’” said Newman, who is joined as a floodwall mural newcomer by Tim Maxey, a Shawnee

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall assistant baseball coach and

recruiting coordinator Tim Donnelly has been with the Thundering Herd program for eight seasons. During that time, he’s recruited more than 30 players to the Herd. He’s helped multiple players reach the Major League Baseball Draft. Donnelly’s father, Rich, has spent more than 25 years coaching in the Major Leagues, and has a World Series ring to prove it. To put it simply, baseball is in the Donnellys’ blood. But that’s not what this story is about. Well, it is about baseball, but it is also about a daughter and sister, a saying, and a moment. Tim Donnelly was young when his parents divorced. He and his older sister, Amy, took primary residence with their mother in Texas, while his older brothers stayed with their father in Ohio. Although separated by hundreds of miles, every baseball season the family members found their way back to one another. Tim was in the sixth grade when Amy, then 17, was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. During the summer of 1992, Rich Donnelly was on Manager Jim Leyland’s coaching staff with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Bucs were was entering into the postseason push. Rich had a friend with a private jet and flew Tim, a bald Amy (from chemotherapy), and their mother to Pittsburgh for Games 3, 4, and 5 of the National League Championship Series. Rich coached third base for the Pirates, and could often be seen cupping his hands around his mouth, shouting directions to his baserunners on second base. Nobody could ever really make out what he would say. “It was after Game 5, and we were on our way to the hotel,” Tim said. “Amy just said, ‘Dad, what are you saying to him? The chicken runs at midnight?’” The whole car was immediately filled with laughter at the spontaneous question. “We were like, ‘What are you talking about? The chicken runs at midnight? What?’” Tim said. The family did not understand the statement or where it originated. Amy did not even know, yet it became the motto for the Donnellys. Even some of the Pirates adopted the saying. After Game 5, Tim, Amy, and their mother returned home to Texas with the promise that if the Buccos made the World Series, they would be in attendance. Throughout the rest of the 1992 Pirates’ playoff chase, the saying stuck with them. screaming, “The chicken runs at midnight! The chicken runs at midnight!” But Lind and the Pirates lost Game 7 in Atlanta, and the World Series hopes were doused. Rich promised his children that if he ever made it to the Fall Classic, he would get them there. That offseason, Amy Donnelly died. She was only 18. Tim recalled that her funeral was perhaps one of the biggest he has had the misfortune of attending. The e entire church was filled. Not only were family and most of Amy’s high school classmates in attendance, but Tim’s close friends, his brothers’ close friends, and some of the ‘92 Pirates. Leyland was there, along with other MLB coaches with whom Rich had formed bonds. “After she died, the question was about what to put on her tombstone,” Tim said. “It only made sense to put ‘The Chicken Runs At Midnight.’” After Amy’s passing, the saying faded but never fully went away. It was always on the minds of Tim, Rich, and the rest of the family. The Donnellys went on about their lives, always keeping the memory of Amy in a special place within them. It was 1997 and Rich took a coaching job with the Florida Marlins, sticking with Leyland. The team battled all season, and found itself in the NL wild card spot. Rich flew Tim -- then a junior in high school -- out to San Francisco. After successfully beating the Giants, Tim prepared to go back home and return to school. Marlins Owner H. Wayne Huizenga and Leyland had other plans. The two called Tim’s principal, saying he could not leave because he was the team’s good luck charm. The principal obliged, and the 17-year-old Tim was allowed to stay through the NLCS versus Atlanta. In Game 6 of that series, a spark was ignited in the Donnelly family. The Marlins clinched the World Series berth with their win against the Braves. That win happened to occur at midnight. “Nothing was said about it, but I just knew it was midnight,” Tim said of the encounter. He again planned to return to Texas, and again Huizenga and Leyland convinced the principal that the teenager was too valuable to part with. “I ended up missing a whole month of school,” Tim said, grinning. “My excuse pass literally says ‘World Series’ on it.” He sat in the dugout for every game. Call it a coincidence or call it fate, but the Marlins happened to have one player on the 1997 roster with the nickname “Chicken Wing.” Infielder Craig Counsell was dubbed “Chicken Wing” because

playing Southern Miss down there, and the groundskeeper came up to me and just said ‘The chicken runs at midnight.’ I was like ‘What?’ because it just surprised me,” he said. Southern Miss coach Scott Berry had showed a TV segment to his entire team and the impact had spread around the Hattiesburg community. Tim said it has always been a motivation for anyone who hears about the story. “Anyone going through problems needs to hear the story,” Tim said. “It was five years later, but it still makes you feel good.” Rich Donnelly is now the manager of the New York-Penn League’s Brooklyn Cyclones, a short-season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets. His last year in the Majors was 2007 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. “It (1997 with Florida) was his only World Series and it is his only ring, and the chicken ran at midnight,” Tim said, proudly referencing his sister. “She was there and she was watching. It makes it a little more special that that is his only ring, and it was so fitting and great that we all got to spend that moment together.” Tim said he was the typical little brother to Amy, occasionally being the pest and sometimes actually being cooperative. “I gave her hell all the time,” Tim laughed. “We had some good times though, and she would always take me places in her car, because you know, she was the cool one with the car.” While he does not bring up his sister in everyday conversation, Tim doesn’t hesitate to share the story and the moment with anyone who asks. “I love talking about it,” he said. “It is a baseball thing, but it’s not. It’s more than that. But anytime I can honor my sister Amy’s memory and share her story, I’m going to.” Rich Donnelly spends the offseason traveling the country, speaking about Amy’s story and the inspiration it brings. During Tim’s first year with the Herd, Rich spoke at Marshall, but Tim said his father’s destinations certainly haven’t been limited to the region. “Last winter, for example, he went out to like Wisconsin and California and Louisiana and such, but it’s just so cool because you honestly never know who is hearing about it,” Tim said. The story lives on today. In New Jersey, a 5K run for cancer research was organized by a father who lost his daughter to cancer, much like Amy Donnelly. The father was inspired by the Donnellys love for Amy and her legacy. The 5K begins at midnight, properly deemed “The Chicken Run.” Every year, Rich Donnelly is in attendance. of his awkward approach to the plate. “His batting stance was just weird,” Tim said. “He held his one arm really, really high, like a chicken wing just flapping.” There were some defining elements about that ‘97 World Series. The Marlins had only been an organization for five years, and, of course, the midnight win of Game 6 that got them there. The series with the Cleveland Indians went back and fourth, forcing a final Game 7. Tim’s older brothers got to attend, and rules limiting the number of people in the dugout posed an interesting situation. “I let them sit in there, because I had gotten to every game before that, and I stayed in the clubhouse,” Tim said. The Marlins fell behind without their good luck charm. “It was the sixth or seventh inning, and one of the clubhouse guys came to me and said, ‘You’ve got to suit up and get back out there.’” The team rallied and forced extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Counsell found himself on third base. A single up the middle by Edgar Renteria sent Counsell home. The Marlins won 3-2 and the entire dugout rushed the field. “There ended up being two dog piles, one at first with Renteria and one at home with Counsell,” Tim explained. “I didn’t know where to go, and my dad, down (coaching) third, was the same way.” What happened next some might call coincidence, but most would call fate. “We just met in the middle, just me and him. He picked me up and spun me around, and I saw the scoreboard. It was midnight,” Tim said, pausing as if still in awe years later. Tim looked at Rich and two stood there, taking it all in. It had come back … the chicken runs at midnight. A 17-year-old Amy started the Chicken runs at midnight, and a 17-year-old Tim was able to see the moment come full circle. The guy we called ‘Chicken Wing’ scored a run ... at midnight. We lost it right there, and it was amazing,” Tim said. “It was so surreal. I love thinking about it and going back to that moment.” Even as Counsell was on third, Tim said the thought never crossed his mind. As the celebrations started, it was fate -- or Amy? -pulling Tim and Rich together on the field. “If we wouldn’t have met in the middle like that, I may not have even seen the time. It was the best moment of my life, and not because of the World Series, but because of all of that happening,” Tim said. It is not a story he will just bring up, but Tim said people usually find out. Several newspapers have told the story, and even television networks have made documentaries on the unbelievable impact Amy Donnelly’s saying has inspired. Tim said he cannot recall the number of times he has been approached by someone who simply says, “The chicken runs at midnight.” “Last year, we were
