KathrynMarkelFineArtsispleasedtopresent,“TheMermaidinthe Hospital,” curated by Maeve D’Arcy and featuring work by Sabra Moon Elliot, Emily Noelle Lambert, and Maíra Senise. It will run concurrentlywithD’Arcy’ssoloshow,“Ogham.”

This exhibition brings together three artists who explore the in between:figurationandabstraction, thephysicalandtheintangible, poetry and prose. The title is borrowed from a poem by Nuala Ní

Dhomhnaill written in Irish and translated into English by Paul Muldoon. Translation is an art form full of interpretations. The process allows elements to be lost, gained, and filled in. Language can exist as an act of resistance and rebellion—especially languages stifled and violently suppressed by colonization. Ní Dhomhnaill’s poem encompasses the dualities explored in the artists’ work. The showcelebratesthethinveilbetweenversionsofselfandplace, real andimagined.

Sabra Moon Elliot is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice engages with the relationships between, structure, color and larger cultural and social phenomena. Her geometric forms subvert the traditionallinearstructureofthegrid, clashingagainstoneanother to create fragmented quilt like shapes. Working across sculpture, installation, paintings, andceramics, sheisinspiredbytheinherent structures, forms and colors found in nature as as well as outsider Americanquiltmakingtraditionsthatareleftoutofthecanon. Her work attempts to bridge those gaps or at least ignite a dialogue aroundthembyexploringnotionsofvisibility.Alwaysfollowingher intuition, her process is driven by improvisation. At times she physically disrupts the rules she employs to make her work, deployingdifferentstrategiestointerruptthesurfacethroughvarious gesturesfrompokingholestodeconstructingthematerial.

Emily Noelle Lambert createsabstractpaintings, totemicsculptures and installations that echo an evocative interrelation between color and form. Inspired by automatic drawings and plein air painting, Lambert’s gestural compositions reflect different aspects of her surroundings. Robust with geometric and biomorphic flat planes of color, eachcanvasexpressesauniqueportrayalofnature.

Tethered to her paintings are her sculptures that function as a metaphorfortheenvironment.Utilizingfoundobjects, andceramic vessels Lambert’s precariously stacked totems reveal a sense of temporalityandimpermanence.

Both celebratory and introspective, Lambert’s work invites the viewertolookbeyondthescopeoftheirsurroundingsandintothe realmofpossibility.
