WIGAN borough fell silent on Remembrance Sunday at 11 o’clock to honour the fallen.

Hundreds of people gathered around the borough’s cenotaphs on Remembrance Sunday, to pay tribute to the brave soldiers who died for their country.

The Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Myra Whiteside, and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy honoured the Armed Forces at All Saint’s Parish Church in Wigan. Chief Executive of Wigan Council, Donna Hall, and local councillors, George Davies, Steve Damber, Phyll Cullen Lynne Holland and Rona Winkworth were also in attendance.

Standishers gather around cenotaph to honour the fallen

Councillors, the military, schools and community groups, paraded from the Town Hall to the cenotaph, outsideAll Saints’Parish Church. More than 500 people gathered around the cenotaph to pay their respects. The Reverand Ray Hutchinson led a service at the cenotaph and at the Parish Church of All Saints’, Wigan, which followed the cenotaph ceremony.

In a procession at Standish, war veterans, members of the Royal British Legion, Wigan Council members, church organisations and youth clubs paraded to the cenotaph for a short service and the laying of the reefs.

People young and old congregated around the cenotaph for a service led by the Reverend Andrew Holliday.

Following the short service at the cenotaph, the procession marched to St. Wilfrid’s Church where another service took place.

Bugler, Ian Wilde, of Standish St. Wilfrid’s Church Lads and Church Girls Bridge, played the Last Post and Reveille during both services.

This was a special Remembrance Sunday for the Standish Branch of the Royal British Legion, as the Standish branch celebrated its 90th anniversary in February of this year.

Ceremonys were also held in Abram, Ashton-inMakerfield, Aspull, Atherton, Golborne, Hindley, Leigh, Lowton, Platt Bridge, Shevington and Tyldesley to honour the fallen.

The dropping of poppies from the chancel was very poignant, with one poppy for each name read out of those who died in both World Wars and the recent Afghanistan war. Young people read out the names as other young members let the poppies fall onto the carpet below.

MEMBERS of both the Standish and Aspull Royal British Legion travelled down to London to attend the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday November 10th.

Standard Bearer and Vice Chairman of the Standish Royal British Legion, Chris Velone, represented Standish at the ceremony.

During the fesitval, the RAF Regiment, the band of the Royal Marines, Chelsea Pensioners, and War Widows paraded around the hall.

Singers, Russell Watson, Rod Stewart and Alexandra Burke entertained the crowds with their outstanding vocals.

The Military Wives also performed at the event.

Chairman of Standish Royal British Legion, David Williams, attended the festival. He said: “It was the seventh times the Standish branch has attended the festival at the Albert Hall and it is still moving. It was a fantastic ceremony with a wonderful atmosphere.

“The service on Sunday was very special to the Standish branch because of our 90th anniversary. More people attended the service at the cenotaph than ever before.”

but we should not forget why we where there.

“We should never forget that people gave up their lives to fight for our country so we can enjoy the lives we live today.”

Sir, In these days when we’re encouraged to leave the car at home and take public transport instead, rarely have I seen full buses, other than school runs or full local trains.

Why is that, if it’s seemingly so important? I thought it worthwhile to first look at the benefits of doing so then contrast the differences with using the private car.

Using public transport does have personal and community benefits. There are social benefits of actually talking to other members of your community that you wouldn’t normally see - at bus stops, rail platforms and during journeys.

In addition, a full bus for example could easily take twenty or more cars off the road - relieving congestion; reducing noise; improving road safety risks; also reducing risks for pedestrians and cyclists. A full train carriage has all of these benefits too and, importantly, could also give cost savings compared to the car and bus (dependent on journey distance).

It’s worth remembering though that although using public transport increases the risk of cross-infection of common illnesses, this is easily countered by the improvement in localised air pollution from the reduction in cars, and with the need of walking to the nearest bus or train stop gives our bodies much needed exercise, thus potentially reducing cases of diabetes and asthma. When considered, the bettering of public health will create a saving to the NHS. Taking the car eliminates that benefit.

Using the car is very convenient; very secure because we can cocoon ourselves; very comfortable and probably quickest overall - unless off course you’re stuck in the frequent congestion in Wigan or Leigh. The downside is expense - considering fuel, parking (and fines!), insurance, road tax and the capital cost of owning and maintaining a vehicle. Using the car is therefore probably

the most expensive option, especially on shorter journeys.

On certain journeys however, the car may still be cheaper overall than taking the bus. There’s no room in this letter to compare and average out all distances in Wigan, so let’s look at one example journey example costs for a adult return ticket from Pemberton to Wigan by train and bus: Train £2.80; Bus £4.50. The bus fare for the same journey is 60% higher! - no wonder buses are more often half full, than full. Bus fares do appear to be very expensive in general. How do rail and bus journeys compare where you live, even taking into account the recent threat of 6% rises in rail fares?

So, come on Wigan Council, and all the councillors with a supposed collective community conscience. Find ways to facilitate cheaper bus travel and/or increased train travel if you really want to improve the health and social conditions in the communities you serve.

Wigan venues entered three separate competition categories: Best Bar, Best Pub and Best Club, and an overall winner was chosen from these.

Chris Coutanche from the Revolution paid tribute to his staff for their loyalty and commitment. He said: “It is an honour for Revolution to be chosen for this award. The staff are the engine room and the heartbeat of our business, from the cleaners and the DJs to the door staff and managers. Their hard work is much appreciated.”

Accepting the Readers’ Vote award of the Inn The Bar’s Tony Callaghan said: “I’m absolutely thrilled on behalf of all my teams because it’s testament to their hard work and commitment that our

venues have been recognised in this way. I have always been a huge fan of the Best Bar None scheme. It’s good for business, for our partners

and customers and most of all it‘s good for Wigan. I hope it continues into the future and goes from strength to strength.”

The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Cllr Myra Whiteside, who opened the

ceremony at the Orwell on Wigan Pier, said: “I applaud those premises

that have demonstrated that they already meet the stringent standards in operational management required for accreditation to Best Bar None.

“And I hope the scheme continues to attract support for many years

to come, with more licensed premises across all our town centres signing up to show their commitment to community safety and public protection.”

MRF recently explored the impact of the diseases in our project ‘Counting the Cost of Meningitis’ and estimated that the life-long costs to the UK Government of medical treatment and ongoing care for a person seriously disabled by the disease are around £3 million.

There is currently no vaccine for meningococcal B disease, which is responsible for the majority of cases of disease in the UK and Ireland, so the public needs to be aware that current vaccines do not prevent all strains of meningitis and septicaemia.

Our advice to the public is to trust your instincts and if you think a loved one may have meningitis or septicaemia get medical help immediately from a GP or the nearest hospital.

One year on for Hospice Chief Executive 5

TAKING over the reigns as Chief Executive at Wigan and Leigh Hospice just over a year ago, Dr Alan Baron seemed the perfect candidate for the job, after working there for 12 years.

Starting his working life in the commercial, retail, banking and financial world, Alan was appointed Director of Corporate Service at the Hindley based Hospice in 2001. Working in the hard nosed world of business before taking on this role, Alan experienced a huge culture shock.

He said: “It’s very different working in the Hospice compared with my previous work.

I was working in a world where profit was king. I came here and saw the outstanding commitment and dedication of the hospice staff and volunteers, who had one main focus, to provide excellent care.

“What surprised me most was how my preconceptions of what I thought a hospice was like were completely different to what a hospice actually is. I had this idea of a hospice being a very dark, foreboding place, but instead I was greeted with smiling faces and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.”

Changing people’s perspective of a hospice is one of Dr Baron’s priorities. He encourages local community groups from across the borough to visit, maybe holding one of their meetings there, in order to learn more about what the hospice is and what it does.

“We need to get more people through the door so they can see for themselves the friendly atmosphere here. School children have worked with the patients on art projects, we have held garden parties and exhibitions here, to try and show the public what a hospice is really like.”

A flagship hospice in the UK, Wigan and Leigh Hospice is well respected within the hospice movement and it isn’t hard to see why.

A recent CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspection found the hospice to achieve an excellent rating across all areas. Some of the comments included that the hospice made visitors welcome at all times, staff and volunteers were in attendance at all times to meet people’s needs and this was conducted in a very caring, polite and dignified manner and the atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed.

The inspectors also commented that the rooms were comfortably furnished, very clean and fully equipped to meet the needs of the people who stayed there, and all the people who spoke to the inspectors said that their was dignity maintained when staff supported them with personal care.

The hospice faces some uncertainty in the future. Around 40 per cent of its running costs come from the local Primary Care Trust which is being replaced by a new Clinical Commission Group from next April as part of a m a j o r restructuring of the NHS. However, Alan is confident for the future and feels that existing relationships can be maintained and built upon.

Alan said: “We are so fortunate to have such wonderful support from our local community. The majority of our income comes from donations of one form or another from people across the Borough.

Often this is because we have cared for a loved one but sometimes it is simply that they wish to support their local hospice. I feel confident to say that people trust us to spend their money wisely on local people who are going through the most difficult time in their lives. Over 90p in every £1 raised goes directly on patient care and support.

“Wigan & Leigh Hospice is now in its 30th year. We do recognise that times are hard for everyone but I feel confident that the hospice will certainly be here in another 30 years time.”

The hospice is currently trying to secure some capital funding for a state-of-the-art outreach centre to be built within the existing hospice grounds. This new project, with the working title of the Woodland Centre, will house the therapy, counselling and out-patient clinics together with providing a home for our expanding community nursing team including a new Hospice at Home service currently under development.

“The new development will have the add-on benefit of freeing some space in the existing hospice that will allow us to consider opening more beds in the future. Planning permission has been applied for and we will find out whether our bid to the Department of Health has been successful in March 2013. We still have to go through a few hurdles before we get there”, said Alan, “but if we are granted the funding and the planning permission this will be a fantastic new facility, which will free up some much needed space and enable us to develop new and responsive services.”

Many people think of the hospice only in terms of in-patient beds. In fact the majority of hospice patients

receive some form of care and support in their homes, with a team of nine specialist nurses currently supporting patients across the borough.

Developing the community and outreach services is something that Alan is keen to do.

He said:”I want to really push our work in the community. Most people wish to be cared for in their home at the end of their lives so our aim is to provide a high quality service in a patient’s home surrounded by familiar things and the people they love. By spreading our reach in this way we are able to support more people.”

With the hospice’s 750 voulnteers, hopsice staff rely on the dedication and commitment of the voulnteers and Alan cannot praise them enough, saying: “The volunteers are amazing at what they do. So many people, from all walks of life, are giving their time to help keep the hospice running. We have a diverse range of volunteers from students to people who are retired. This is a unique feature of the hospice bringing a connection between people across our community and making the hospice such a friendly and welcoming place.”

So after a busy year in his in role as Chief Executive, Alan has faced many challenges, none greater than the challenge over the coming years as he seeks to ensure the hospice is responsive to the rapidly changing world around us. But one thing is for sure the proud Wiganer who is steering the hospice ship will have the incredible help and support of an invaluable team of staff and volunteers.

WIGAN Mayor, Councillor Myra Whiteside hailed the achievements of Wigan Borough Environment and Heritage Network at their annual awards ceremony.

Six heritage groups, run by volunteers, were awarded for the hard work and dedication by Coucnilor Whiteside, who presented the groups with a glass trophy.

The award winners included Leigh Ornitholgical Society, Stubshaw Cross Project , Better Education Training for Adults (BETA), The Bridger’s, Richard Sivell and Ken Jones.

Councillor Whiteside said: “It is a privilege to see the work of the voluteers. The borough wouldn’t be what it is today, it has improve the quality of life, and has made the borough a better place to live, work and play. I salute them all.”

Chairman of Wigan Borough Environment and Heritage Network, John O’Neil chose the heritage network award winners.

He said: “Heritage network is an umbrella organisation thats give strength in numbers to help heritage and environmental groups, who do

a fantastic job in preserving the borough’s landscape and history.”

Three competition winners were also presented with awards.

John, along with Yvonne Webb from Wigan Leisure Culture Trust, ran a competition asking people to write a 1,000 word document about the borough’s heritage.

Mr Max Finney was awarded third place and win £50, Mr PJ Tyldesley came second winning £75 and Mr J Heyes was awarded first place winning £100.

Mayor Whiteside added: “Heritage is an important link between our past and our future, and it is important to preserve our heritage for our children. The network’s strong collective bond of environmental and heritage groups maintains our rich and diverse coutryside and local history.”

PLANS for a new council depot, bringing together teams from three separate sites, moved a step closer following an approval by Wigan Council’s planning committee.

A deal has been agreed to bring back to life a disused former Asda warehouse in Ince. The project

will also bring together teams from a range of council operations into one new ‘hub’ helping to improve services, reduce the council’s carbon footprint and save an estimated £1 million per year in maintenance, transport and other running costs.

The council and its partners currently operate three main depots for core services such as waste collection, storage and maintenance of the vehicle fleet, highways department and Leigh Building Services.

Cllr Kevin Anderson, the council’s cabinet lead for the environment, said: “This project means a disused depot facility can be brought back to life. It is a much better option than spending significant sums on a brand new site, as well as saving money, the new depot will also ensure that 1,500 staff have much more suitable working conditions.”

The works will cost £3m and pay for itself within 4 years. The new depot will be operating by the middle of 2013.

community group has grown from strength to strength and now has an impressive 160 members to its name.

A vital part in the establishment and growth of the group is the committee, made up of ten members, including Chair John Hulme, Vice Chair Philip Davies, who is an artist at at Haigh hall Stables Art Gallery, Secretary Dawn Galletly, and Treasurer John Burns.

Members of the non-politcal group are determined to transform of Friends of Haigh Country Park. the hall and park into the facility it once was.

“There’s no other place in the borough, Haigh Hall and its grounds Edna Hulme, member of the community group, said: “It’s a shame what the park has become, the zoo, the mini railway and cray golf are unique” he continued.

Haigh Hall and park has certainly captured his passion, enthusiasm and have all gone.

“I was brought up with the park, my grandmother would take me, drive and it is spreading.

Since the establishment of Friends of the Haigh Country Park in March, I would have school visits here, and then I took my children and when 40 people attended a meeting about the future of Haigh Hall, the grandchildren here and so we want to restore the park to make it a better facility for the community.”

And true to their word, the group have recently tidied up the crazy golf course and opened eight holes to the public during the October half term holidays. It proved very popular amongst local residents as 200 people passed through the gates of the crazy golf course.

Dawn Galletly, Secretary of Friends of Haigh Country Park, said: “We had no funding to get the crazy golf back up and running, volunteers tided up the course, we even had one lady from America come to help us!

“This is not the finished product, only the beginning. The obstacles from the course have been taken away and local apprentices are restoring them. Hopefully the obstacles will be placed back on the course in time for easter next year.”

need the funding to make this great place a real success.”

Idea after idea, the group ooze enthusiasm and they want to community to get involved.

STEPS, a Community Interest Company which helps to develop the skills and learning of people with disabilities through making garden furniture and garden maintenance work, have made wooden planters, bird houses and bat boxes for the park. Bat Conservative Trust are examining the park’s bats to find the most suitable place to put the bat boxes.

Friends of Haigh Country Park are also working with people who are visually impaired to review and improve the sensory garden situated in the grounds.

Not only are they working with community groups they are also encouraging schools to get involved too by planting bulbs around the grounds.

Dawn said: “The great thing about the park is that it is very much a community place and so it’s great that the community are getting involved with the restoration and improvement of their facility.”

Austin Moss, member of the community group, runs his own business in steam trains, and with the help of Wigan Model Engine Club, is hoping to get the steam train back up and running on the original track by Easter.

The group is also working closely with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT). John commented: “Close links with the WLCT is essential to make the hall and the park the best possible facility it could be. We are working with a number of people from the trust and we need to continue the close work to ensure a bright future.”

The hype of activity surrounding the park is astounding, considering the group has only been established for seven months, and it is hard not to feel enthusiastic too.

The park that holds so much history, and is part of the childhood memories of many local residents, is to be restored to its former glory.

John and members of Friends of Haigh Country Park are determined to polish that jewel, to make it to sparkle with pride.

The next meeting is held on Tuesday November 20th at St. David’s Parish Hall, Copperas lane, Haigh at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome.

ST. WILFRID’S Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade celebrated the 20th anniversary of the band’s success at the 1992 British Youth Band Association final.

The band came second, just five points off first place, at the finals held at Wembley Arena.

The red rose county will be blossoming with pride as Lancastrians celebrate Lancashire Day.

From Liverpool docks to Coniston Water, the Pennines to Blackpool Tower, Lancastrians will be toasting the Queen and the Duke of Lancaster on November 27th to mark Lancashire Day. Lancashire Day celebrates the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by King Edward I of England to attend, what later became know as The Model Parliament.

Many Lancashire towns celebrate the history and heritage of the Lancashire by reading the Lancashire Day Proclamation and Standish is no different.

Standish will be marking Lancashire Day with the official opening of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Monument and garden (pictured) , situated on the junction of High Street and Grove Lane, by Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Warren J. Smith, at 12noon. Reverend

Church raises money for Derian House A CHARITY evening organised

by Christ Church, Parbold in aid of Derian House C h i l d r e n s Hospice has raised £1,130.

The evening was a charity night at Briars Hall at Lathom,

organised by Clare Glynn, the wife of the parish priest at Christ Church and All Saints Appley Bridge the Rev Simon Glynn, with the help of Viv Smith, Kay Baybut and Julie Barlow.

Some 75 guests enjoyed a ‘flower chic’ themed night: guests were asked to dress as extravagantly or modestly as they wished, and a superb buffet, live entertainment, disco and raffle were the highlights of the night.

Clare and other members of the Christ Church family decided to help Derian House, as they were touched at all the support from the hospice for the family of a local youngster during and after the youngster’s illness and passing.

Around 75 people joined in the fun and set about raising the fantastic total.

One of the highlights of the evening was the ‘auction of talents,’ where volunteers were asked to offer their talents free of charge to raise funds for the evening.

This included gardening, DIY, cake making and cooking. £1,130 was raised and the cheque was presented to Derian House on October 31st. Busy Autumn for All Saints’ Church Courier

Pearl of Africa Choir perform for pupils

With two successful events happening at All Saints’ Church, Appley Bridge, it’s been an action packed autumn for the church.

The Big Idea, a project which involves all groups of the church to work together on the same theme, and the visit of The Pearl of Africa Choir made for a busy autumn for the church.

Autumn’s Big Idea, launched with a live show called Animate at All Saints’ Primary School, focused on self-control.

The church groups learnt about types of behaviour which some people find hard to control and were thought of as ‘the monster within.’ The Big Idea project helped people identify and, with God’s help, learn to control our ‘Monsters.’

The three week programme explored themes of controlling our speech, actions and thoughts were in church services, school, junior church and house

After the fun-packed three weeks of the Big Idea project All Saints’ Church, in conjunction with Christ Church Parbold, prepared for the visit of The Pearl of Africa Choir.

The Ugandan choir gave a lively performance of singing, dancing and drumming as well as selling original hand made crafts, to raise funds for the charity Pearl of Africa Child Care, at Christ Church Parbold. A staggering £2,800 was raised from the event.

The charity aims to improve the health, education and welfare of people suffering through disease, war and poverty in Uganda.

The choir also visited All Saints’ Primary School were they sang and led a music workshop for the pupils.

ST. MARIE’S Primary School was presented with a one hundred pound cheque from Standish 4 Youth co-ordinator, Councillor George Fairhurst and Standish 4 Youth Volunteer, Angela Bland.

This summer Standish 4 Youth organised a BMX and skateboard ramp on St. Marie’s Primary School playground and as a thank you Cllr Fairhurst presented the school with a cheque.

A range of finished and incomplete work was displayed from paintings to sketches, installations to textiles.

Artist of Cross Street Arts, Steven Heaton, said: “The open days allow the public to look behind the scenes and see our work in progress far than the finished work you see in exhibitions.”

Cross Street Art gallery are also holding a Christmas exhibition on Thursday December 13th from 7pm9pm.

The exhibition will display paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, textiles, collages and mixed media for sale. Refreshments will be available.

The children of Shevington are going on a sheep trail around the village. The story starts when one of the shepherds in the Christmas story looses his sheep.

From the December 1st to December 20th the children from the village will be going on a Nativity Sheep Trail round the local shops and businesses trying to find the sheep and their names.

Each business and shop in Shevington will be asked to put a knitted sheep somewhere in their premises, the children will go and try to find the sheep and enter their names on a leaflet which tells the Christmas Story.

TRAVELLING with Children just got a Little Easier with Steady Eddie World!

Travelling with children is about to get easier as Steady Eddie takes to the road with a new Kids Club from the Stobart Group.

Keeping a child or children occupied during a long road trip has always presented parents with challenges. Constant cries of ‘Are we there yet?’coupled with the need for frequent bathroom and eating stops usually increases the tension in the vehicle. Fortunately, help is at hand. The familiar ‘Spot the Stobart Lorry’ game, well known to most children (and adults) for years is about to be updated for the 21st century as an interactive app (released December 2012) along with a Kids Club and website called Steady Eddie World featuring travel-related games and books for children aged 4-9 years. Steady Eddie World contains premium content for members including: online games, downloadable puzzles, recipes and videos introducing Steady Eddie and his friends! Stobart take education seriously which is why lesson plans in literacy and numeracy, using the Steady Eddie characters, have been devised and are available for download on Steady Eddie World. Together, Stobart’s aim is to make a family’s journey as exciting as arriving at their destination, by invigorating traditional travel games into a form that today’s young person can appreciate and enjoy.

Whilst some may remember an early incarnation of Steady Eddie as an anthropomorphised lorry, Stobart have rebooted Eddie for the 21st century ‘little traveller’ as something more recognisable – a boy. Ably assisted by his

sidekick Tina Towers, Eddie runs Steady Eddie Enterprises (SEE) World Inc. from Greenville…UK. He maintains a close relationship with his fleet of lorries, as they do their best to outfox the nefarious Tycoon Terry – Managing Director of Horrid Haulage.

The app (to be released Dec 2012) – called The Eddie Stobart Tracker – will activate an alarm when a Stobart lorry is coming within range and will be displayed on a real-time map. Once the truck has been spotted the child can enter their sighting onto their account and compare their tally with other ‘tiny travellers’ via the leader board. This new interactive element will create a community of tiny travellers that will entertain themselves – thus relieving the burden from long suffering parents!

Steady Eddie embodies great values of practicality, fun and fair-mindedness with his one fear being he hates to let people down – a great role model for children.

THE PEOPLE'S JUBILEE A Nation Celebrates - Competition

FOR millions of us, the Diamond Jubilee weekend in June was one of 2012's defining moments, in a year full of defining moments.

Friends, families and complete strangers in communities up and down the country came together to celebrate 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.

To commemorate this historic milestone, Haynes is publishing The People's Jubilee, a stunning picture collection which chronicles, in lavish pictorial detail, the Royal Family's activities in 2012 - from the spectacular celebrations to the more low key, but nevertheless important, events which marked six decades of the Queen's dedication to Britain and the Commonwealth.

Written and compiled by Victoria Murphy, Royal Correspondent for the Daily Mirror, who followed the Queen every step of the way, The People's Jubilee features more than 300 colour and black and white images of the Queen and the Royal Family - many previously unseen - taken by Mirror and Reuters photographers during 2012.

Photographs taken at key milestones from the Queen's reign - including the Coronation of 1953 and the jubilees of 1977 and 2002 - also provide a visual reminder of how Her Majesty, and society, has changed over the course of her 60-year reign.

The People's Jubilee beautifully charts June's extended weekend of spectacular celebrations, where the Royal Family took centre stage at the Epsom Derby, travelled down the River Thames as part of a record-breaking flotilla, hosted a picnic and pop concert at Buckingham Palace and attended a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral. Meanwhile, scenes from many of the 9,500 street parties which took place across the country during the long weekend illustrate the positive and galvanising effect the Diamond Jubilee had on the people of Britain.

Elsewhere, readers are treated to pictures that illustrate the burgeoning relationship between the Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge, and are reminded of many of the fashionable outfits and dazzling jewellery worn by the Queen during the year. There is also the inside story on her mock skydive into the stadium at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The People's Jubilee captures a more personal side of the Queen, including pictures of Her Majesty in a moment of reflection at the Service of Thanksgiving and attending the Diamond Jubilee concert while the Duke of Edinburgh was in hospital.

Author Victoria Murphy says: "While the Queen has demonstrated a steadfast and unerring devotion to her subjects for 60 years, she opted to rededicate herself to her people in 2012. In time it will come to be seen as a defining year, with the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games almost bringing ordinary life in Britain to a standstill.

The author Victoria Murphy is the Daily Mirror's Royal Reporter. She provided extensive coverage of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 and continues to travel the world reporting on the Royal Family. Earlier this year, Victoria authored Sixty Glorious Years, a book documenting the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. T y re P r e s s u r e Under- or over-inflation of tyres can cause: l Uneven tread wear l Weaken your tyres l Reduce traction l Impact fuel consumption l Increase wear Eventually, you could have an inconvenient flat tyre or even a dangerous blowout. Over-inflation means the weight of your car is not distributed evenly across the entire tread but is instead concentrated on a thin strip in the centre. Under-inflation means the tyre is soft and the outside edges work harder than the softer centre. The extra rolling resistance makes your car work harder to move and increases fuel consumption.

Be sure to check your tyre pressures regularly, and maintain the recommended pressure listed in your owner's manual. Also, you can usually find this recommended pressure on a sticker posted on the door pillar or in the glovebox.

If you are using an octane grade that is too low for your car, something other than the spark plug can ignite the fuel in the engine. Check your owner's manual to learn about the correct octane for your car.

Don't upgrade to more expensive octane ratings unless your manufacturer recommends it.

This is important because air is just as crucial as fuel in the combustion process that powers the engine. Air is drawn through the air filter, then the air intake manifold and into the cylinders. There, it mixes with fuel to create the small explosions that power your car.

A dirty air filter prevents the cylinders from drawing in enough air, and affects the air/fuel mixture. This can result in poor fuel economy.

NAMING A car after the boss of the company worked out well for Ferrari, with the Enzo – but will it be a similar success story for the Adam? It’s named after the founder of Vauxhall’s sister company, Adam Opel, and it’s predicted that over half of Adam buyers will be new to Vauxhall.

The stakes are high for this car, then – and the competition is fierce. The aim with the Vauxhall Adam was to take on retro rivals like the Fiat 500 and MINI, while offering an i n t e r e s t i n g alternative to the straight-laced Audi A1.

There’s a choice of three petrol engines: a 69bhp 1.2-litre and a 1.4-litre with 86bhp or 99bhp. All come with a five-speed manual gearbox and the option of stopstart – and as a result they emit between 119g/km and 129g/km of CO2 and claim to return fuel economy of well over 50mpg.

Our test model was a top-spec Slam – it sits above the Jam and Glam in the range – and featured sports suspension and optional 18-inch alloy wheels, so it resisted body roll well in corners.

But the biggest surprise was the well weighted steering and brakes, which

Possible rebellion over fuel tax

THE Government faced a backbench rebellion against the planned 3p increase in fuel duty.

Labour put forward a Commons motion on Monday calling for a three-month freeze in the levy, which is already the highest in Europe.

MPs fear the rise – which was delayed from August – will cause outrage as it coincides with New Year rail and bus fare increases and will come a week before cuts in child benefit hit the better-off.

Conservative MPs said: 'This is the number one issue raised by backbenchers with the Chancellor of the Exchequer's team because it is causing so much concern.

John Walker, chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: 'The ever-increasing cost of fuel and utilities is the main cause for rising business costs for small firms.

'We support the call to cancel the 3p per litre duty increase in January and urge the Chancellor to look at this at the Autumn Statement.'

This great-value £275 option is available on all models and brings a seven-inch hi-res touchscreen that allows owners to connect their Android or Apple smartphones via USB. They can then do everything from listen to music to view photos and even watch videos when the car is stationary. As on the new Renault Clio’s R-Link system, there are downloadable apps, too, including a full sat-nav and radio podcast app, with more to follow shortly after the launch. We tried it with an iPhone and the system worked well, with the layout proving intuitive and the screen responsive.

Verdict

THE VAUXHALL ADAM is a smart and funfilled city car. It’s exciting to drive with a bold image that takes in-car customisation and gadgets to new heights for this market – so there’s plenty here to praise. But the cramped rear and lack of a sub-100g/km model could put off buyers who are already spoiled for choice. Still, the Adam is well priced against its competitors if you don’t go mad on the options, and deserves to be a success.

WIGAN RUFC Lions Under 7 and under 8 team travelled to Preston Grasshoppers and played the home side's under8s, coming away with two well won victories.

The first game against hoppers’ Under 8s was won 6-5, and the second was won 65.

There has also been the odd occasion where the lads simply didn’t ‘turn up’ and where we were doomed from the start (think Man Utd at Old Trafford). However, on the whole, it has been a decent start with the club steering well away from the dreaded drop zone and even eyeing up a mid-table position.

A slick passing display against West Ham at the DW secured the first home win of the season, with Ivan Ramis giving the Latics an early lead with a superbly taken volley. BBC Radio 5 Live reporter Stuart Hall was lavish with his praise for the Spaniard, saying it was the best goal he had ever seen!

James McArthur capitalised on a poor clearance, scoring with a 15yard strike and doubling the lead.

West Ham could have gone up to fourth in the table had they won, but failed to trouble Al-Habsi until James Tomkins headed in a late consolation. Overall it was a deserved win for Wigan, and the result never looked in doubt after Ramis’ wonder-goal.

Next up was a highly disappointing League Cup tie against Bradford. There is nothing like a good Cup run to ignite the passion of both the fans and players and you feel Martinez has missed a golden opportunity to make a good season, a great one. We dominated the game, but frequent mistakes by Jordi Gomez and Ronnie Stam meant that our chances were often wasted. Boselli looked vulnerable on his own up front and whilst McManaman made a blistering start with a couple of mazy runs, he faded rapidly in the second half.

The match went to penalties, with Watson and Jones scoring the first two. Maloney blazed over the third, and the pressure was on to score the forth. Guess who stepped up to take

Watson scored the only goal, a close range effort, and the lads created at least three clear-cut chances with their incisive passing and clever movement. We held on for the 1-0 victory, and confidence grew ahead of the next game at the DW against West Brom.

Bowdon 7 Wigan 54 South Lancs & Cheshire Div 1 Saturday November 10th 2012 WIGAN'S indifferent run of four straight defeats in October came to an end with an eight try romp over Bowdon at Clay Lane.

Fielding a much stronger side than of late it was soon apparent that Bowdon would have difficulty containing Wigan's strike runners as they were repeatedly driven back over the advantage line.

Andy Whittle slipped through a gap close to the line for the first. The outside half added a penalty before converting Mike Jones's effort, the full back taking advantage of a break by Mike Rigby and slotted a second penalty for 0-18 at the interval.

The game ended as a contest within 10 minutes of the restart, Jon Hogarth, making his first appearance of the season, proving too strong scattering the defence to touch down twice.

Whittle converted his second effort before Paul Bamber capped an effective debut with a try finishing off a handling move to cross unopposed.

Vale of Lune 4th 7 Aspull 51 Raging Bull Shield 1st Round Saturday November 10th 2012 ASPULL eased their way into the 2nd round of the Raging Bull shield following a comprehensive 7-51 win away to Vale of Lune 4th.

Chad Boyce crossed for four, Neil Duddy notched up a hattrick with Harry Finch and man of the match Graham Smith over for one apiece.

Aspull have been drawn at home in the second round against local rivals Wigan 3rds on Saturday 1st December. Wigan defeated Preston Grasshoppers 5ths 32-5 at Douglas Valley in their first round match.

Wigan 2nds are drawn against Orrell 2nds defeated Littleborough 2nds 22-11 in the first round of the Raging Bull Trophy, and will play Tyldesley 2nds in the second round at home. Joe Egan dies at 93

Underwhelmed by internationals....

JOE Egan – one of Wigan Rugby League Club's best known players has died at the age appearances for Wigan between 1938 and 1949, and had a fiver year spell as coach, of 93. taking Wigan to championship success in the He was the first rugby league player to receive the Challenge Cup from a reigning monarch when King George VI presented it to him after Wigan's 83 victory over Bradford at Wembley in 1948.

1959–60 season and Challenge Cup finals in 1958, '59 and '61 He was the first player to receive the Challenge Cup from royalty when King George VI presented him with the silverware after guiding his side to an 8-3 victory over Bradford in front of more than 91,000 fans in 1948.

Joe also won two Championships with Wigan, in 1946 and 1947.

He remained a big supporter of the club and attended games well into his 90s.

Call for more Wigan sport volunteers

SKATE SESSION: Champion inline skater Jenna Downing lead Wigan volunteer sessions

VERY MUCH a sporting town, Wigan is aiming to build on the fantastic 150 sports volunteers it has at present to have the highest number of “Sport Makers” in the whole of Greater Manchester.

The 150 people have signed up to carry out a minimum of 10 hours volunteering within their local communities and, with two more inductions due to take place in the next few weeks, Sports Devlopment staff at Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust are hoping to top the 300 mark.

Inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic

Games Makers, the 70,000 volunteers who contributed so much to a fantastic summer of sport in the UK, a national project called Sport Makers aims to continue the Olympic legacy though volunteering and by inspiring people to play sport.

In Wigan and Leigh, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s (WLCT) Sports Development Unit are leading on the initiative in partnership with Greater Sport.

Stuart Murray, Chief Executive of WLCT, said: “Wigan already has a strong voluntary sports club sector but we’re delighted that so many people have already signed up to take part.

“Many of those taking part want to give something back to their club or community but there are also a large number of students looking to gain employment in the sports sector at the end of their courses who also see this as a wonderful addition to their CV.” British Champion inline skater Jenna Downing, pictured, lead two induction sessions at St John Rigby College where new Sport Makers pledged to uphold the Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Councillor Chris Ready, said: “One of our main aims is to create a confident Borough with confident people, and this initiative has a major part to play in that.

Volunteering can increase confidence, creates a closer connection with the community, and can lead to employment.

“We’re delighted how the people of Wigan are leading the way.”

Anyone over the age of 16 can join the Sport Maker programme, which hopes to give those taking part the knowledge, information and connections to help make sport happen.

A FEW FANS have been in contact with me this last few weeks to tell me how underwhelmed they've been by the recent international tournament.

I must admit, it's not been especially exciting. The sight of England - not even the strongest England team we could field, in my opinion absolutely trashing the Welsh and, more worrying still, the French, a non-existent drama played out in half-empty stadia, has hardly got the juices running for next year's World Cup, or even for next season.

By the time you read this article, the tournament will be complete, and working on the basis that the final match won't be much too write home about either (oh, how I'd love to be proved wrong on that!), it may be looked back on as yet another of those international RL disasters that the game seems to specialise in these days.

By contrast, in preparation for its own World Cup in 2015, the Rugby Football Union has announced that it will be investing £26 million at grassroots level to capitalise on the expected surge of interest. England Rugby Union have four scheduled autumn internationals. They play Fiji, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. All are expected to sell out.

To those who know the two sports, and have even half a clue about the disparity in terms of entertainment offered by the average match, this contrast seems like a cruel injustice, but to some extent Rugby League has

PAUL FINCH weighs up the pros and cons of the autumn international series brought this on itself.

International fixtures used to be the most exciting events in the 13-a-side calendar.

Just throw your mind back a few years and try to recall the excitement we all felt when a Kangaroo tour was in prospect. Every club game would be packed out. The Test matches would see venues like Wembley and Old Trafford filled to the rafters.

Fanfare The terraces used to move beneath your feet as the green and gold of the Aussies and the red, white and blue of the Lions marched out side-byside to a fanfare of trumpets.

The belly-roar of the crowd would be deafening.

In 1992, the World Cup Final at Wembley saw an exhilarating, brutally-fought battle between the two old foes, Australia just pipping Great Britain by 10-6 (exWigan great Steve Renouf scoring the only try), in front of 73,631 ecstatic fans. At the time, this particular match, which was screened late at night down under, broke Australia's overnight television ratings record.

But it wasn't just the presence of Australia that used to fire the imagination of British RL supporters. In

This deficit was only temporary as Andy Whittle then slotted one of his own. With the game going into the second quarter Hoylake seized the initiative and their stand off capitalised on some weak tackling to squeeze over.

The conversion stretched the margin to 10-3. Though Wigan pressed they then presented Hoylake with a second try as they raced away from deep in their own half having gathered a loose ball put down in the Wigan threequarters.

The second half saw a transformation as the Wigan pack stepped up a gear and dominated the set piece.

Continuity and support play also improved as Wigan subjected Hoylake to spells of pressure. During this period Simon Barton ruled the lineout, the front row

1995, England v Fiji drew an attendance of 26,263 to Central Park, England v South Africa drew 14,041 to Headingley, while 15,385 watched Wales v Western Samoa at Vetch Field.

It all seems like such a long time ago, and yet it isn't in real terms. It's just that such events now feel so alien to us that they can only be part of ancient history. But if nothing else, it shows that the potential is still there for Rugby League to be a happening sport in the British Isles.

In terms of Sky viewing figures, Super League still attracts a very healthy audience. More British players than ever are being targeted by clubs in the NRL - I don't approve of that, incidentally, as I feel it could catastrophically weaken the British domestic competition - but at least it shows that, despite the financial constraints of these difficult times, we are producing conveyor-belt loads of quality players.

But there is still this inescapable feeling that things were once better in the past.

The current play-off system for example, is an absolute joke: the British champions

who will take on Australia's top dogs at the start of next year actually finished fifth in the final table. There are still forces in the game seemingly hell-bent on resisting any raising or modification of the salary cap, even though most top Rugby League players appear to be on target lists for the NRL or Rugby Union.

Struggling Even if the cap was raised, it would cause problems, as, despite its impressive sounding title, Super League still contains several clubs who seem to be struggling to make ends meet, and they're not just the minnows: the unexpected loss of Celtic Crusaders at the start of last season was followed with almost indecent haste by the very embarrassing Bradford Bulls debacle, and now there are unsubstantiated rumblings about Salford and Hull KR. It's perhaps no wonder that a recent summit meeting was held between the various Super League chairmen, at which Wigan boss Ian Lenagan called for extensive changes across the board.

Not every subject that was supposedly up for discussion filled me with optimism.

Some parties harbour a desire for a return to promotion and though I relegation, personally would revile such a move - if Super League wants to be taken seriously as a top-level professional sport, it can't afford to be carrying 'yoyo' clubs. However, other areas of debate sound more promising. Rumours are rife that moves are underway to expand the World Club Challenge. Who wouldn't

G Ex-skipper’s lunch for Joining Jack

FORMER Wigan RUFC captain Danny Barker is organising a festive lunch for the Joining Jack charity at the Douglas Valley club on Saturday December 15th.

The meal will be an opportunity to raise funds for research into Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, the condition that young Jack Johnson, son of former Warriors’ player Andy, has been diagnosed with.

The lunch kicks off at 12 noon in the clubhouse, and will be followed by

the league game between Wigan and Broughton Park.

G Badminton tournament

ON the weekend of 8th and 9th December, Wigan Sports Development will be hosting the Wigan Badminton Tournament (Formerly Badminton Bonanza) at Robin Park Sports Centre. The tournament has separate categories to accommodate Social & League players as well as a Boy’s & Girl’s section for Under 16s & Under 14s.

WINSTANLEY ST. AIDANS FC players are the proud owners of a new team kit thanks to a Brighter Borough Fund (BBF) contribution by local councillor Clive Morgan.

Winstanley Ward Councillor Morgan presented the new kit to club stalwart and Chairman Bob Ledson and team captain Martin Thomas, who acted as team model for the day!

The £1,000 BBF donation was also used to purchase other football accessories for the club.

A keen sportsman, Cllr Morgan was

only to happy to assist and support the club when he was approached by Bob Ledson.

Cllr Morgan said: "Sport is a great way to meet new people, keep fit and healthy and provides an outlet for the talents of our young people.

Robins topple Saints in thrilling derby match

THE FIRST-EVER league derby between Wigan Robin Park and St Helens Town ended in a very comfortable 30 victory for the Robins.

The eagerly-awaited match was given extra spice with 11 of the 16-man Town squad being ex-Robins.

Add in the fact St Helens are managed by Ian Granite - who guided Robin Park reserves to the title last year - then it was a mouth-watering prospect that awaited the Park faithful.

With vital points and bragging rights at stake the game was maybe surprisingly - played in an excellent spirit with both teams respecting each other and looking to play football at all times.

Eight minutes later the Robins doubled their lead when a corner was met by Ian Rowlands: His powerful header was palmed away by Lee Novak but it went straight to Livingston who lobbed it over the stranded Town keeper.

THE Ultimate Football Tournament is a nonprofit event organised by Falling Leaf and ALL funds will be going towards their chosen charities, Joining Jack and Macmillan Cancer Support. Taking place on the Sunday 25th November at the Soccerdome, Wigan, it’s a full day of excitement and competitive football.

St Helens were limited to longrange efforts with their best attempt coming from Shaun Judge whose 35-yard shot stung Jay Foulds hands.

The Robins looked for more goals as Livingston, Howard and substitute James Edgar all went close but the second half remained goalless.

The opposition gave the manof-the-match accolade to the classy Quirk while Livingston picked up the Robins’ supporters award.

WIGAN Sports Development’s Back to Sport programme will be hosting the 2nd GM Back to Basketball Tournament on November 24th at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre.

This follows the success of last years’ tournament which attracted a total of 10 teams from various boroughs in the Greater Manchester area.
