Disney Does It Again: Oz Definitely a Must See By:Miranda Rocha

Movie Review

I don’t trust movie critics, they believe their opinion is fact and they usually give all the good movies bad reviews. So, when I heard that movie critics were giving bad reviews to Oz the Great and Powerful, I knew they had to be wrong. Oz the Great and Powerful is a movie filled with a land of color that is just as vibrant and diverse as its people. With river fairies, munchkins, tinkers, and a dark forest filled with man eating plants, The land of Oz is definitely going to leave a lasting impression on not only Oz but on the audience as well. As cliche as it may sound, you’re definitely gonna know that you’re not in Kansas anymore. Although the witches may not be what you expect, you have to wait and see. This is the movie that really shows all the magic Disney is about. The Wizard of Oz was great, but Oz the Great and Powerful is even better. Oz may not

be the type of wizard you’ll be expecting, but he’s definitely the wizard Oz has been waiting for. Oz’s lands that are filled with vibrant color and the beautiful transitions were absolutely wonderful. Each new scene and every character filled me with absolute awe, I’m sure that no one in the packed audience was disappointed. Every little detail was filled with some kind of symbolism. The “china town” was simply brilliant, as well as the description of what a witch was in the beginning of the movie;everything has a double meaning. James Franco made a wonderful

Oz with his “con man” smile, cunning ways and his magician tricks. Mila Kunis is the most surprising witch you will ever believe to see on screen. Every actor, as well as the voice actors made a wonderful job of portraying the characters. This movie

“A wonderful mix of comedy, tragedy, romance, and adventure.”

is a wonderful mix of comedy, tragedy, a bit of romance and a lot of adventure; it might even give hope that even the most cowardly man can have good in his soul. Along with facing the feat of a life time, is the meeting of three people who will definitely help in defeating the wicked witch. But, with no guns, no technology, and villages filled with people who cannot kill, how can you kill an un-meltable witch?

Arts & Entertainment Jiu Jiu (Manga series ) By:Miranda Rocha

Book Review

In the past few years, anime and Manga have been making a bigger hit amongst americans, but I must say, Manga are one of the best gifts asian culture has brought to teenage girls. For all you manga lovers, Jiu Jiu by Touya Tobina is a Manga you definitely need to read. With its tear filled pages and loving characters, Jiu Jiu is defenitely going to leave you wanting more. Takamichi Hachioji is definitely not your normal teenage girl; she’s a dark hunter who hunts any kind of demon or hybrid demon whenever the chance comes. Although she should be taking more care of herself, because after all she is the head of the seven demon hunting families. But, with every

heroine, comes a dark story. Takami’s twin brother was killed by a demon several years back, and since then she has refused to be close to anyone at all, even her Jiu Jiu. Snow and Night, Takamichi’s demon wolve human hybrids, are meant to protect and care for her; after all, that’s what Jiu Jiu are supposed to do. But with Takamichi’s ever evading escapes, how can they? She refuses to get close to her own Jiu Jiu, and she won’t let them protect her either. But, they aren’t going to take no for an answer. Now, at just three years old in wolf years, and 17 years old in human years, they aren’t giving up on Takamichi just yet. With Takamichi’s serious attitude, and Snow and Night’s sweet and innocent nature, it’s impossible to not have a bit of

odd humor mixed up between the pages. One of those moments being an unusual punishment in which Snow and Night are made to lie on the floor and have students trample on them because of a silly mistake they made. Takamich doesn’t exactly take things lightly, nor does she have mercy, at first. But, after a while, she begins to realize exactly how much she loves and cares for both Snow and Night.

By:Miranda Rocha

Listen to the words which flow from my lips Remember who I am, not whether I fit in Don’t forget the words I speak today They’re all I’ve ever wanted to say... Look at me, no, not my clothes! See the person into which I have grown You see black make up, a Goth girl, a freak Say what you want! Your words don’t hurt me! Some say I’m scary, ugly, a monster How can you live with all the prejudice you foster? You see black clothes, skulls and chains I see a girl who’s going to live up to her name When I look in the mirror, do you know what I see? I see a girl who’s edgy, and bold; a Gothic beauty But, maybe you prefer a girl who’s normal and sane You can look somewhere else, “normal” will drive me insane! Some people just don’t get it, I don’t care to fit in! I don’t get why they can’t just listen! I’ll never change who I am, or care what you think No matter what happens, I’ll always be me

Love is out there one more time By:Nohemi Alvarez Trying to live Trying to smile happens to everyone

That we are what people think impossible

Sleepless nights Boring fights this is just my life

And that life is a maze when it comes to finding you

But when you appeared out of nowhere bringing daylight to my life

In the end we’re both here never letting go

No one will separate, what we’d been looking for

From the end Start again fearing break up s’on my mind

Together we fight for the freedom of our life

But you are Next to me reassuring not to cry

And so we realize that love-love is out there one more time

Monster By:Miranda Rocha

It was inside you, all along Awaiting the right moment To reveal itself, to take you over. You harbored its strength; You let it survive. You did nothing to stop it, The demon in you. You became a coward, You should have stood your ground. You should have fought. You should have remained proud. It took you over, It flows through your veins. It stole your name, It even wears your face. Are you in there? Someway? Somehow?

Short Story Fiction

I was born with dark blue eyes-the color of troubled waters. Not that I'd ever seen the sea, but sometimes Papa brought the books with color. I'd probably fear the sea anyway, for anything as uncontrolled as Poseidon's world is a stark contrast to the world I live in. That never stopped me from hoping. Nathaniel sits beside me, his back stiff with tension-if they see him here with me, it'll be a whipping for him. He has been with me since childhood, and he came to captivity along with me. Somehow, though, there's a difference in our cages. My clammy hands squeeze his in desperation, but I need to try to get into Papa's office. It holds all the answers I need. “What difference will it make, Delilah?” Nathaniel pleads with me in swift German I gives him a feeting glance, and then I'm on the move, “Maybe I just need encouragement.” Then I will escape. The musty smell of his office emphasizes his constant absence, and even with my wary steps I see thick dust shift in my wake. I ignore the books marked red with “banned” signs stacked here and there; in my past journey's into here I'd read all of them, never realizing that the true answers laid on the colossal desk. Nathaniel pulls me back, but I reach and grab several of the documents. I read them swiftly, their words proving what the servants said just last week. Father is a monster-a villain and murderer who doesn't deserve to live. With a start, I realize the documents are English newspaper copies. England. I shove them away, horrified, for the people my father has killed are just like the boy sitting beside me. Nathaniel looks down at me, his hands nervously playing with the hem of his striped uniform. “What is it, Delilah?” Jews.

I don't wait for Nathaniel. Instead, I run out of my father's office, angry tears streaming from my face. He calls after me, but I can't look at him-not now that I know what I'm the legacy of. As I reach my room, Genevieve, my caretaker, comes out of her ajoining room, her face completely forbbiding. “What is wrong, girl?” She sees Nathaniel running up behind me, his screams dying down as he sees her. “What has he done now? Tell me!” She has always hated Nathaniel, but now I know why. My mind cracks, and, suddenly, I'm screaming, my rage becoming words. “Why does he hate them? Why do Germans kill them? Murderers! Murderers!” I take advantage of her momentary surprise, and run into my room, slamming the door hard enough to shake the walls. You need to leave, my mind whispers frantically. On the other side, Genevieve calls me a disrespectful and ungrateful child. She calls me useless, and I realize she's at least right about the last one. Even though I know the truth, I wouldn't dare run away. Fear eats at me like a virus. Absentmindedly, I hear Genevieve call the other servants to capture Nathaniel. I hear a different edge in her voice. “I hope you'll learn your lesson, my dear!” She screams, talking to me I believe. I ignore her, blindly sinking down onto my bed. Facing the door, I notice that where the door hinges are, a hole has appeared. I quietly creep towards the hole, noticing some items have been stashed within. When I find my mother's things, I feel a deep sense of calm. As I read her diary entries, I realize she was a very determined women. Along with them, a blue dress of fine silk sits magestically-it's beauty slightly tarnished my the hole on its left breast. With a start, I notice the blood stains that almost obscure the golden star of David. He killed her. I force myself to stand, hatred

running through my veins like fire. I pull her dress over me, and tuck her diary entries in its recesses. Burning tears run down my face as I throw clothes into a rucksack. The rational side of my head asks me how. How will you manage to escape with Nathaniel? But I can't think about that, so with a last fleeting wish to have stayed in the dark about all this, I wrench the door open. Ready to take my first step to freedom, I trip slightly on the crumpled heap that is my best friend's body. Blood pours from his slashed throat. So much blood.... “No. No! NO!” I kneel, and take his limp hands in mine, hopelessly wishing for him to respond, not caring that my mother's dress was getting soaked in his blood. I am not crying anymore; he wouldn't have wanted me to, but I lean over and kiss his cheek and close his lifeless eyes. “Get away so they can remove him.” I hadn't seen her there, but Genevieve looks down at me in disgust, probably because I was touching a “dirty, filthy” Jew. Bile rises in my throat. Hate screams for me to grab the knife they have left unattended next to him. Even though I don't want them to touch his body, I know I won't ecape if I fight. He isn't there anymore anyhow. I hid the rucksack behind me and begin to edge towards the backdoor of the house-it is not too far. Through a window I see the thick lining of forest that I will have to traverse, but I am no longer afraid. Reaching the door, I sprint out with a speed I didn't know I had. I hear the screams behind me, but I am faster than the guards arethey are Jews as well, weakened by malnutrition. My mother's dress dances with my legs as they take flight amongst the greenery. I am free to do whatever I wanted now, maybe even destroy my father. If Adolf Hitler could be so immoral, then, his daughter, Delilah Hitler, would be the picture of humanity. Without bonds and with the blue dress, I would be indestructible.

The Fault in our Stars By:Violet Rivera

From the bestselling author, John Green (Looking for Alaska), comes a story about life, love, and cancer. There is no doubt that a cancer story is sad, but using the voice of an impassioned girl,The Fault in Our Stars puts this story into whole new perspective. Hazel Grace has been in an “inbetween” status for a long time, depending on a miracle drug to keep her alive for some more years. She is anything but depressed though, indeed, it’s her intensity that makes the story more accesible to the reader. Hazel has settled for going through the motions, never allowing herself to hope or make new friends. Then she meets the eccentric and perfectly imperfect Augustus Waters who just might break all her barriers through his captivating way of being. Although the love story is toetingling, do not be mistaken; this is more a journey than a love story. As Hazel gets to know Augustus, she is unknowingly being prepared for her greatest tragedy (beware of plot twists!). With such “raw bursts of humor and tragedy” (Jodi Picoult), this novel will have you gasping and sighing till the last word.

The Blue Dress

By: Isaias Ortiz

Short Story Fiction

I am jealous of her. As I sit here in the doctor’s lounge I can see a young girl combing her hair with the reflection of the clerk’s window. When she finishes she goes up to her mother and ask if she looks pretty of course the mother says “yes and you’ll always be”. How nice it is for a mother to allow her daughter to believe in something that may not be true just so she can feel beautiful. Eventually that same girl will be like the rest of us girls and boys (whether they deny it or not) attentive to their image ,obsessively or minimally. I don’t know when it begins ,but I know it won’t completely end I will just get used to it as I age. For now I follow the routine of waking up in the morning with my biggest worry being how I will look. It takes me ten minutes to figure what I will wear first and regret after I put it on. Another five minutes to look at my clothes and wish I had something new because nothing I have is good enough. I hurry and put on an outfit that I know someone has given me a compliment on and I haven’t worn in a month. I don’t hurry because I worry that I will be late ,I have to put my makeup,so I can have something in common with the models in the commercials, that will be the only thing we have in common, our looks are at opposite ends. By putting my make up on I can make changes to my appearance, make up is a substitute to me, it provides the change I cannot have without surgery. I know that I cannot make cheek bones higher, my lips plumper, my nose smaller, my eyes more mesmerizing or blue

or change to be more like my definition of beautiful. As I put on the foundation that Doutzen Kroes wore, the lipstick that Barbara Palvin had on ,and the eye shadow of Claudia Schiffer I gain the confidence that they seem to have; the type of confidence that doesn’t come with beauty, however that confidence doesn’t last long. During the car ride to school my vanity level is low probably because it is the last time I will feel comfortable in my skin. It ends when I shut the door of my mother’s car. Throughout the day I will look in my compact mirror any chance that I have and I will worry about what others will think when they set their eyes on me. Every day I live like this it will only stop when I’m dreaming the only time it seems I can ride freely ,but it begins all over when I open my eyes. I need to hurry up again. A lot of time has been wasted. I know I’m not beautiful it is unnecessary for people to feel pity when I say this aloud, it is only the truth. There will be some girls who don’t feel beautiful, but are, and then there will be those who don’t feel beautiful and aren’t. It isn’t something that can be pre-programed; I’m not gonna wake tomorrow with my family’s best genes. It may sound like I have low self-esteem ,but at least I m not trying to fight the inevitable. Everyday I just need to grow a little more comfortable with my body coping with the solutions that best fit me and realize stuff like, people can think what they want etc... ,so my possibilities of enjoying the luxuries of life will come at a greater chance.

Viral videos new path to stardom By: Alexia Puente With the start of a new year comes new ideas and innovations. Social media has made it possible for these ideas to gain spread faster and gain fame from others online. YouTube, as well as other video sites, make names for internet celebrities hoping to make themselves known. Music videos, shock videos, and comedies all the like are gaining views every day and even earning money. “They’re in search of

getting discovered by a producer and hope that one day everyone will know their name,” sophomore Joseph Esquivel said. “It’s what they want to do for a living.” While certain viral videos serve to entertain and put a smile on faces, there are others that shock the viewers and leave them with feelings of fear of disgust. Some people feel the need to post disturbing antics online

for attention, and curiosity is enough reason for others to watch. Those videos are quick to get taken down, but with enough determination they are reloaded and found on the web once again. “Some people do it to get attention; even though some comments are mean, the acknowledgement of mentioning them is enough for attention seekers,” sophomore Nayelie Lopez said. The more negative

videos tend to spawn reactions and follow ups. Jealousy ensues and causes more videos by those hoping to swipe some of that fame for themselves. Meanwhile, the viewers remain entertained by each retaliation and give them just what they want. “It amuses audiences, but the fame only lasts a short time. Those methods are usually not good,” junior Erika Elizondo said. While those types of

videos remain on the dark side of the internet, there are others made for light entertainment. Music videos are either pleasant to the ears or humorous enough to start a dance trend, such as the Harlem Shake. Other prefer to upload skits or rants for the sole purpose of laughter. “A lot of famous videos that went viral were music videos. Gangnam Style became very popular,” Lopez said. Celebrities easily earn views based on their name alone, but a few people use YouTube as a way to make a name for themselves. All it takes is one video to earn the title of YouTube celebrity, and they continue to offer entertainment not only to keep the title, but to entertain viewers and perhaps inspire others who hope to go viral as well. “Usually what attracts attention is a person’s talents or something out of the ordinary, like a dolphin doing tricks,” Esquivel said. “What catches the user’s eye is the fact that the video is unique.”

First year impressions of MHS By: Kayla Maldonado, Rebeca Gomez, Heather Garza

Another school year has passed and the freshmen share their thoughts on their first year in high school. “I really enjoyed my first year because I got to make new friends and I learned many new things, like how to play better tennis and how to use many new programs in Microsoft,” said Freshman Chelsea Martinez. A whole new school environment can be overwhelming, but the freshmen have found some teachers that have left a memorable impression. “My favorite teacher is my choir teacher because we sing, which I love doing , and the teacher is really nice,” said Freshman Isabel Altiano. A lot of freshmen also have favorite classes as well. “My favorite class would have to be French because I learn something new every day,” said Freshman Rebekah Montes. A student’s life at school doesn’t always revolve around grades, school work, and homework,

it’s also about the extracurricular activities they participate. “Next year I plan on being in Choir, FBLA, and Environmental Club,” said Freshman Yvette Cazares. First impressions are always important because it could impact your whole school year experience, some of the freshmen share their thoughts on their likes and dislikes. “I like that the school is big and the fact that you have opportunities to get college hours started, But, I don’t like that their isn’t much nature like flowers, bushes, and trees to brighten up the school,” said Freshman Maxine Rodriguez. At the end of the year, the freshmen look back and reflect on their first year at MHS. “This year was totally different from how I expected my first year here to be. But, it was a good year overall,” said Martinez.

Rocking to the Stomach Location: 1801 N Conway Ave Mission, TX. 78572 Rating: 4 out of 5 stars By: Blanca Guerra Although strange to the Mission area, Rockin’ Burgers and Dogs has become the new burger place for Mission. Being next Wingstop the competition is tough. The atmosphere is sociable; it’s a place to chill with your friends. Haily Hernandez, a junior, called it “the new after school hang out place”. Even though the food is not as cheap as McDonalds or Yums Yums, the burgers there are still very delicious and at a decent price. If you want to try something new and out of this world Rockin’ Burgers and Dogs would be to place to go. If you do go there, I recommend you to try the quarter pounds, and if you have an appetite the half- pounders would be the best for you to try.

Jitterz Coffee Bar

1625 N Conway Ave Mission, TX Rating: 5 out of 5 stars By: NyKea Salinas A small and local coffee shop, Jitterz is a great spot to hangout with friends and enjoy some great music and live performances. They roast all of their coffee in small batches daily. They also brew amazing teas, but they don’t have much to offer in terms of food. They do however have great cheesecakes, cookies and muffins. The muffins, I might add, are made by MHS’s own Penny Womack, secretary to the Dean of Instruction (Mrs. Ada Castillo) and Mr. Womack’s wife. The service is wonderful and can make some of the best drinks, I think most of them are better than Starbucks.

La Fruteria

1410 N Conway Ave Mission, TX Rating 5 out of 5 stars By: NyKea Salinas Close to school and a great place to enjoy not only fresh fruits but ice cream, snacks, and variety of salads and sandwiches. A calm and serene environment with quick and kind service, it is very enjoyable and is a great place to go after a tough workout or before church the way my friends and I do. The food is amazing and the produce is always fresh and tastes wonderful, each fruit cup is freshly made and has no frozen fruits in it. I highly recommend this place especially if you need a quick snack to refuel or don’t want a heavy lunch/dinner.

Loads of fun and food Location: 2140 E Business Highway 83, Mission, TX 78572 Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Not only known for their entertainment but their food as well. Valley Bowl, family oriented place to go to when you’re seeking to have some fun with your family and friends. The alleys are filled with colorful lights to guide your ball. They play lots of genres of music, from Spanish pop to English hip-hop. The food is not on the cheap side, but it’s still very good. The wings are the best! If you’re looking to enjoy yourself and your family while you munch on some great food, go ahead and go to Valley Bowl. I recommend this place; it’s one of the few places in Mission where you could actually have some fun and not get bored.

Lone star Bar-B-Q

Unleash the Sauce Location: 2224 U.S. 83 Business Mission, TX 78572 Rating: 5 out of 5 By: Blanca Guerra Do you love BBQ? If you do, Lone star Bar-B-Q would be the place to go if you do not feel like making your own BBQ at home. Although the décor isn’t great, what it lacks in atmosphere it makes up in high, delicious quality food. The Q is super good and if you’re a fan of fish, the fried catfish at Lone Star is so good it makes your taste buds dance. It’s not a fancy place, but it has a vibe where you feel like if you’re at your own backyard during football Sundays making your own BBQ. The prices are super reasonable and it has plates ranging from all sorts of prices. The service is speedy; you do not have to wait that long for your food. And if you’re looking to try dessert, the banana cream pie is amazing. Lone star BBQ is definitely somewhere I would return.

The prices are fair and are totally worth it, everything you buy is made to order. The people who work there are friendly and happy to serve you. Although, you might find yourself waiting up to thirty or more minutes in line to get what you want. I might add that the Lion King raspa is amazing as are the Fresas con Crema, Maranadas, Fruta con Nieve y Yogurt but I highly recommend the Chamoyadas if you aren’t ready to try something new. This just shows how good Xquinkles is, try it out!

I’m confident we prepared for the battle but the victory rests with the Lord,” said Coach Munson. The girls Cross-Country team which was comprised of three freshmen, two sophomores, one

junior and one senior earned the District Title. The boys team which contained six juniors and one senior got 3rd place in District. “We met our goals as District Champions, at the Regional meet, girls were a bit nervous running against 200 girls. The team is made up of seven girls who areextremely young and they needed that experience of competing at a huge meet. They will be better prepared next year with this under their belt,”said Coach Garza.

Their goal for the summer is to keep in shape and run at least twice a day. “We’ve been working hard since the summer and everyone is dedicated and united as a team,”Michelle Flores said. The Lady Eagles leave behind this season, and focus on next year, and the new challenges they have in store for themselves. “I feel like next season, we’re going to improve our game, strategy wise and make our school proud,” said sophomore Daniela Perez. By: Karen Chapa, Ashley Ponce Completing his second year as head coach, Everardo Castellano can see his athletes believe in what they want to do on and off the court. Things will fall into place if they continue to work hard. “We will build on our overall winning season and take the next step and make the state play-offs since 2009,” said Coach Castellano. The team started their season on a high-note. The Varsity Basketball Team had a tournament in Hidalgo at the State Farm Arena. It was the first Championship Tournament in four years for them. They gave it their all to win the Hidalgo Tournament; winning the tournament, Jerry Barrera was awarded MVP player. “It felt really good, I was proud of myself. That was a big tournament, and I was able to lead my team to victory,” said Barrera. (11) The rest of the season though the boys struggled, they had 19 winning games and 17 losing games. But that didn’t bring their hopes down, they gave it their all on the court and with their fans supporting them with every win and lost. Making them stride higher in basketball for next year’s future games.

“They kept cheering for me even when I was cramping up and couldn’t go any longer, they pushed me to finish,” said Jerry Barrera. (11) The team would also get support from their manager Leroy Vasquez. (11) Leroy would help give the players water in every timeout and “would lead the team in breaks before games,” said Coach Castellano. Another tradition this season was when they would huddle at games they would say the word “Tarantula” because they found two of them in their locker room. The guys tried their best in every game they played. Giving it their all on and off the court; supporting their teammates from the bench. Never letting anyone down and winning games. “It felt great after all the hard work we put in during practice and it paid off once we won,” said Lalo Muñoz. (12) They are losing teammates but gaining confidence and new players for next year’s season. “We started off really good, the team and I made a couple mistakes and ended up missing the playoffs,” said Lalo Muñoz. “The goal every year is to do good in District, once that’s accomplished the goal turns into making it to Regionals,” said head Coach D. Castillo. This year the Varsity girls golf team accomplished their goal of qualifying to regionals. “I couldn’t have been more proud of the team and myself,” said senior Yulissa Sandoval once she heard the tournament’s host announce that the MHS Girls Golf Team was advancing to regionals for placing 2nd in the District Tournament. “I had four of my girl varsity athletes place in the top 10 for individuals and I feel proud of them because they played very well when they needed to,” Castillo said. Senior Jessenia Rodriguez placed 2nd, senior Yulissa Sandoval tied for 3rd place, senior Celeste Vela tied for 7th, and junior Nyssa Castillo placed 10th, and senior Daniela Martinez placed 21st, all advancing to regionals at San Antonio, on April 16-18. All the girls on the varsity team

have been playing together since their freshman year. “I wanted to try something new that not everyone plays,” Sandoval said. “Some of my favorite memories are going to the San Antonio tournaments,” Senior Jessenia Rodriguez agrees and exclaims that this trip to San Antonio will be memorable because it is her and her teammates first time qualifying for regionals. The boys varsity golf team placed 6th at the District tournament. “I feel disappointed about not making it to regionals being that it’s my last year,” said senior J.J. Hernandez, “but there is still a nice group of boys coming in for next season.” Both the girls and boys varsity teams will be losing a few of their team members for next year, due to this year being their senior year. “Every time I lose seniors to graduation it hurts a little but that’s all we get. We only get them for four years,” said Castillo, “but we got a big group of students who joined the team so it won’t be difficult to find people to play golf next season.”

tennis The season has ended, but the rackets keep swinging. The tennis team has had major changes throughout the year and season. New coaches are improving techniques and new players fill the bigger team. Despite these changes, the love of the sport still stands and expands to the new and bigger team. “This was a good first year for two new coaches, the students were very open-minded to the new coaches and very helpful,” said Assistant Coach Pena. Head Coach Perez and Assistant Coach Pena got to work with both new and returning players. “This year, was the year that the coaches had to deal with a larger team,” said Senior Mariana Vargas, Varsity Player. Many other players agreed that this year has seen more people joining tennis than in the past couple of years, especially freshmen. “I was satisfied with my performance and with everyone else on the team,” said Junior Luis Hilario, Varsity player. The tennis team did not advance in the District meet, but Coach Pena said they had some success. They did however, place with Junior Oddalys Guerrero winning 4th place in the JV tournament. Hilario got two medals, one with his previous partner, Mariana Vargas, and another with his current partner, Homar Alanis. “I believe that I have improved a lot on my skills,” said Senior Jennifer Garcia, Varsity player. The team has been practicing year round, competing in tournaments and scrimmages. Every day during class and after school, the team has a determination and a love that pushes them harder into the game. Garcia says the team has worked and put effort to make it a great year. Both coaches admitted they saw a lot of improvement in the team. Even though the team did not advance, they gained two new leaders, which helped them build for the future said Coach Pena. “Coach Perez can relate to the students and has a lot of experience coaching which are both qualities that I think have helped the students improve,” said Vargas.

Wrestling season otherwise known as the time where a group of people known as wrestlers have to cut down to keep in their weight class. From light weight to heavy weight, everybody makes a sacrifice. From running those extra laps to not eating junk food for the rest of the seaon. Not only do the the MHS wrestlers gather together on the mat, they also gather together before the matches start. After they finish warming up as a team, they all gather around the mat and share words that pump each other up to do the best that they can do. In previous years, MHS has never had more than one person qualify for the wrestling state tournament, and this past season, two girls made it to state. Both seniors, Amanda Alvarez (185 weight class) and Valentina Barrera (215 weight class) did great at Austin. Overall, this years MHS wrestling team advanced with Valentina Barrera placing 4th and Amanda Alvarez placing 3rd. This years MHS girl’s wrestling team has been more successful than ever thanks to not only the girls but the whole team and coaches. The girls couldn’t have done it without the support of their team member and the support of the coaches.

There are always going to be obstacles for success. The powerlifting team came upon their biggest obstacles during the

They needed to stay consistant with their eating habits in order to maintain their weight. “My biggest obstacle was having to stay after school for my other activities going on at the same time.” Diana Espinoza, junior, said. This year, the Mighty Mission Eagle Swimmers went all the way to Regionals, 16 out of 22 swimmers qualified. Our champions achieved their goals despite not having a water heater, having to train at a pool in Weslaco. The long practices that left an ache all over their bodies was nothing compared to the love they have for the sport. A difficult task that looks so easily done by our swimmers. “All of the competing swimmers this year, I am glad to say, will be returning next year,” said Coach David Colunga. This season has lived up to that exciting expectation as the softball team moves forward into the playoffs. After their staggering 0-1 loss against Mercedes, the team remains positive and still has no doubts that they are worthy of that District Champs title and will continue to play to the best of their abilities. Head Coach, Iris Iglesias plans to remain a solid team and states, “As we approach the state playoffs, its do or die. Winner continues and the loser goes home. We look Back row: Asst. Baseball By: Briana Villareal, Guillermo Beltran “This years 2013 Varsity Baseball team has been more united than before,” Robert Leyja said. The baseball team has been preparing for the season since November and know they have a great chance to advance to playoffs and be one of the top 3 teams. For this season MHS moved down to District 32-4A and had great competition in 5A , yet still qualified for playoffs.

“Our goal is to become District Champions and go far in playoffs, as long as we all work as a team and believe in each other everything will be alright,” Noe Galaviz said. There was many obstacles this season the team had to face together and adjust to the changes. “We lost some keys players that made a difference and could have helped us. Two major players were lost were one of

our catchers , Steven Carrera, and our starting short stop, Eddie Tamez who got injured during the rivalry game,” Guillermo Beltran explained. They came out strong the first three district games until they faced Rio Grande City, that one lost made them realize they need to try a lot harder and be confident at the plate. Throughout the season they have improved and learned that when a mistake is

done to shake it off and be ready for the next one coming. Many of the members for this years baseball team have been in varsity since their Freshmen year and have experienced a lot throughout that time. “I’ve played baseball all my life but these past four years have been different. I learned to stay positive and always have a good attitude. The one thing that I liked best was that no matter what we tried our best to have a spot for playoffs and always came through achieving that,” Aaron Gallegos said. The baseball team has won 3 out of 12 games so far indistrict. “My team this year has improved so much since pre-season and have showed me we are a strong team and can go far. Track By: Lyzeth Vazquez, Georgina Barrera It’s mind over matter; it’s that finish line you focus on, and it doesn’t matter how you are going to get there, but you are. You trip, you fall, you stumble, and it doesn’t matter because crossing that finish line and leaving everyone behind is something you have set your mind to. Track isn’t about following the path; it’s about creating your own and having others follow you, because no matter how hard they try they aren’t getting past you. “It’s a mind set of sport,” senior George Gonzales said. Gonzales a runner for the past four years has accomplished a lot with fellow runners: Sergio Guerrero (12), Edgar Cardenas (11), and Robert Veliz (10), as a team for the 4x100 relay they got recognized third place in one of their meets, but Mission High School’s Track team doesn’t stop there!

Sports/Seniors They have one goal set in mind, and that is to leave everyone in the dust, a goal achieved, but that is no surprise. At the district meet Vanessa Rodriguez, placed 1st for Female Long Jump and yet again for 200 Meter Dash. Michelle Flores, placed 2nd for both the 800 Meter Dash and 1600 Meter Dash, but the girls weren’t the only ones to steal the spotlight. Antonio Salinas took awards home by placing 1st in the Shot Put as well as in the Discus Throw. Sergio Guerrero, placed 1st in the Triple Jump. Jose Garcia placed 2nd in the Pole Vault jumping over many schools and their athletes. Esteban Mungia placed 4th in the 3200 Meter Run. Esteban speaks for many when he says “I feel like I accomplished something not many people can.” It’s no wonder why they wear their maroon uniform proudly, letting the world know they are Eagles.
