SC HOOL C OMP L EX IN PALERMO Stages: 0-1 | Location: Palermo, Italy | Type: Education | Year: 2018 | Status: 2nd Prize

The innovative school complex in the southern area of Palermo creates an new urban centrality which not only caters for the users of the school, but also functions as a civic centre open to the local community for evening activities. Designed as a public structure, the three buildings - kindergarten, primary school and highschool- are integrated seamlessly into the landscape, allowing nature to penetrate them and reconfigure the interior spaces by creating a system of paths, green areas and patios. The new school complex proposes a ‘green pedagogy’ and therefore aims to be a model not only for the dissemination of new educational practices, but also for new learning environments. The concept for the school ultimately aims to evoke an ecological vision to the children by investing in the coexistence between the built space and the surrounding natural environment.

FAR M I N CORNWA LL Stages: 1-2 | Location: Cornwall | Type: Residential | Year: 2018 | Status: Planning

An abandoned farmstead in the Cornish countryside is proposed to be restored and reused, by converting the several farm buildings into dwellings. At the moment, most of the buildings are dilapidated by neglect of the previous owners, with overgrown vegetation consuming large parts of the exterior stone walls. For this reason, the proposal makes provisions for large repair and restoration works, especially because most of the buildings - among which a Grade II listed building - are inhabitable, with collapsed or severely damaged structural elements. In conjunction with the restoration works, the proposal integrates the erection of a small number of wood cabins that can be used as holiday homes, in the periphery of the existing farm. Lastly, new paths and are added to the existing ones made of asphalt or paved with stone, so as to facilitate access and circulation for both vehicles and pedestrians.

C HI P ST EAD STREET Stages: 4 | Location: London | Type: Residential | Year: 2018-19 | Status: Construction

This domestic project concerns the reconfiguration of an existing 3-storey terraced house situated within the Studdridge Street Conservation Area in Fulham. The existing building is proposed to be expanded to become a 4-storey single dwelling, which is accomplished by the excavation of the basement under a full footprint of the house and the replacement of the existing side infill to the rear of the property with a larger one. A central lightwell is introduced, that organises the living spaces around it in the Basement and Ground Floor, while it enables ventilation and brings natural light to the central part of the long and narrow house. Along with the creation of a rear lightwell and the enlargement of the front one, as well as the new roof lights and full height openings, the proposal manages to maximise the potential of the existing building in order to create bright and pleasant living spaces for a family of four.

L UT T R EL L AV ENUE Stages: 4 | Location: London | Type: Residential | Year: 2018-19 | Status: Construction

The refurbishment of this three-storey Victorian house in Putney, is focused on the creation of a large family room at the rear of the property that includes kitchen, dining area and seating area. For this reason, the existing extension and internal partitions are removed and replaced with a new, light filled family space. A large opening of steel frame windows towards the rear brings natural light, while offering unobstructed views to the redesigned garden. Besides this, a washroom and utility room are added inthe ground floor, the two bathrooms of the first floor are entirely redesigned and the loft is converted to incorporate a bedroom with ensuite and a study. Because most of the original building remains as existing, a complex structural design has allowed the ground floor to become largely open-plan and the loft to be converted, retaining the ceilings bearing decorative cornice and the original timber and mosaic tile floors.

SI N GL E FAMI LY H OUSING Stages: 1-3 Location: UK Type: Housing Year: 2018-19 Status: Tender

The project centers around the creation of a housing community of high-quality homes that can appeal to a growing rental demographic of both families with children and the over 65’s. The design, that starts from the unit and expands to the design of the urban realm and the masterplanning of the development, aims to create strong connections between homes and families by offering shared amenities, open green spaces and a thoughtful layout that works to bring people together. The brief asked for three types of houses (2, 3, 4 bed), which are proposed to be comprised by a set of primary and secondary components. These are fully developed, so that they can be constructed using off-site methods and assembled on site. Consequently, each house, will be one variation of these components. The design intent is not only to offer flexibility and scalability, but also to reduce the construction time and waste, aiming at creating a sustainable, built to last development.

K IN GST ON R ESI D ENT I AL DEVELOPMENT Stages: 1-2 | Location: Kingston, UK | Type: Housing | Year: 2018-19 | Status: Planning

This mixed-used scheme, that is divided in two blocks forming an L shape, provides a development footprint of over 4,700sqm, whilst creating a well-proportioned, centralised public square connecting the major crossing points of the site. The proposed buildings accommodate 400 apartments and carefully considered spaces of residential amenity. The apartments vary between one-, two- and threebedrooms, all of which incorporate an exterior space (terrace or balcony). On the ground and first floor, a new public square is proposed, as an open space for pedestrian relief and urban retreat from the busy road network around the site. The extroverted nature of the ground and first floor The well considered urban realm design is further enhanced by the introduction of new pedestrian and cycling routes and spaces for relaxation for the passer-by.

CO- L I VI N G I N WES T LONDON Stages: 1-2 | Location: London, UK | Type: Commercial | Year: 2018 | Status: Planning

The project concerns the design of the new premises for a co-living start-up in West London. 300 units are offered, varying between the studio type (16m2) and the premium studio type (23m2) as provisioned by the clients. Apart from the accommodation units, substantial amenity space has been provided (2m2 per bedroom) with shared spaces for the guests, such as bar, restaurant, gym, library, laundry, roof terrace, hot desks space and more. Emphasis has been given to the breakout shared spaces of each floor that are designed as double-storey spaces with interior planting and meeting areas. The Ground Floor level with a taller ceiling height, is designed as a meeting space, while at the rear end, complementary commercial space is provided. The development will benefit from a modular method of construction, already applied in the fellow scheme of the co-living start-up, thus reducing the building cost and the time for completion.

L IS T ED BU I L D I NG I N MA RYLEB ONE Stages: 1-3 | Location: London, UK | Type: Offices | Year: 2018 | Status: Planning

The five-storey terraced property within the Howard de Walden estate, currently houses several offices on the lower floors, while the last two upper floors are occupied by residential tenants. The existing layout of the building, that can be roughly distinguished into three phases - the original 1760s building, the1829 addition and the later rear extension - is rather fragmented and inefficient. Therefore, the proposal, focuses initially, on the development of a central core strategy, that can increase the efficiency of the building with cohesive vertical circulation and stacked services. On a second level, key interventions are proposed aiming at maximizing its potential. These vary between traditional and contemporary forms of construction, depending on their visibility from street level. An overarching goal of the proposed interventions is to convert the building into a contemporary office space that among others meets to the best possible extent, the BCO guide’s requirements.

EX P OSED P RIVACY Academic - Final Thesis Project at NTUA 2015 - 2016

Located in the centre of Athens, a public space in a long- established crisis, our study sought to rethink this problematic relation with public space and established a research ground that attempted to find new means for the usersto ‘be in public space’ and at the same time, unknot the potentiality of overlooked and left-over sites under the lens of an intersection of private and public. The project therefore, unfolded as a research process that is founded on the contradiction between public and private, and investigated how the effusion of a private act into the public can overturn, stretch or expand the established limits of social tolerance, which in its turn, led to the invention of a new urban equipment for the city. The designed objects interpret three basic acts that we are used to consider private, but which can also be found in the public space. These had two versions; a set of ephemeral constructions and a set of permanent interventions, developed on scales from 1:200 to 1:10.

The project was developed for the module ‘Theorising practices/practising theory: architecture, art and urbanism’ whose objective is to produce a piece of writing in relation to a site that each student has selected. The site of this particular project is the Duveen Gallery that accommodates the Parthenon Marbles, at the British Museum in London. The project looks at the Parthenon sculptures as a shared cultural object, dispersed among European institutions. Fragments of the Parthenon can be found in eight European institutions: the British Museum, the Acropolis Museum, the Vatican museums, the Louvre, the Nationalmuseet, the Glyptothek, the Martin von Wagner Museum and the Kunsthistorischesmuseum. The particular case of the Parthenon sculptures, raises issues of identity, ownership, heritage, nationality, that are reflected on the structure and the development of the project.

ÉQUI L I BRÉ Shortlisted entry for DOMES Review COOK8 competition February 2018

Équilibré is an architectural device that introduces imbalance as a key factor for redefining the typical dining space. Departing from established cultural codes around cooking and eating, concerning placement of objects and bodies, temporalities, hierarchies and social conducts, Équilibré reinterprets the dining space by means of playful and collaborative interaction. In this context, the different stages of preparation and consumption of food are incorporated into an architectural object that embraces a contemporary hearth and occupies almost the entire floor and ceiling of a square room. The eight users find themselves on an unstable common ground that requires their cooperation and coordination. Although the acts of dining are grounded on the necessity to achieve balance, the design – much like a children’s playground object – encourages intuitive action and play and leaves space for diverse interaction.
