Coach Filkovski begins third season as head coach

eff Filkovski (Fil-kow-ski) begins his third year as the head football coach at Marietta College in 2010. In his first two years, Filkovski has coached eight Pioneers to All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors and one to All-Region recognition while laying the foundation for his tenure at Marietta. Last season, senior Lamar Hunter was named All-Region second team and All-OAC first team. In addition, junior Adam Tate and senior George Frisch received All-OAC second team honors while junior Cameron Kiger and sophomore Cody Andrews earned All-OAC honorable mention. In 2008, senior Grant Cowell picked up All-OAC second team honors, while juniors Lamar Hunter and Clinton Thompson both received All-OAC honorable mention. Filkovski, who has coached at both the collegiate and professional level, was the offensive coordinator at Heidelberg University in 2007. The Student Princes’ offense ranked in the top five in the league in nine different offensive categories. As a result, Filkovski was named the 2007 Ohio Athletic Conference co-Assistant Coach of the Year. Prior to joining Heidelberg, Filkovski was the offensive coordinator for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. The Centurions had the second-ranked offense in the league and finished 6-4. He began his coaching career as a quarterback coach/ recruiting coordinator at the College of Holy Cross from 199295. Filkovski also spent one season as the quarterback coach at Thomas More College and four years in the same role at the University of Cincinnati. During his time at Cincinnati, the Bearcat

squad earned the 2002 Conference USA title. He started at Cincinnati as a graduate assistant in 1996 and was elevated to tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator in 1998. Filkovski had an outstanding career as a quarterback at Allegheny (Pa.) College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. In 1990, while being named the Football Gazette Division III Offensive Player of the Year and the Associated Press Little All-American Quarterback, Filkovski led the Gators to a 130-1 record and the NCAA Division III National Championship. The Pittsburgh native was also a prep standout in football and baseball at Penn-Trafford. Filkovski, who lives in Marietta with his wife Stacy and daughters Avrey, 6, and Ariel, 4, will have a balance of familiar and fresh faces helping him lead the Pioneers in 2010. Denny Dorrel will be the defensive coordinator and Drew Mohr will be the defensive backs coach and strength coordinator for a third straight season. In addition, Rashawn West (linebackers/defensive backs) and Josh Jones (wide receivers) both return for another season. Joining the staff in 2010 will be Charles Boyd (running backs), Chuck Leierer (offensive line), John Prater (defensive line) and Blake Simmons (tight ends).
