Courses are offered day and evening, online and on weekends. GateWay is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). COMPARATIVE ANNUALARIZONA TUITIONS

The size of a university can be overwhelming. At GateWay, our campus is small, providing the opportunity to acclimate to a college environment, to understand what is expected and to familiarize yourself with the resources needed to make the most of your educational experience.
LOWER TUITION RATES
Many of our instructors have received the highest degree in their discipline and continue to work in their field, bringing real-world experience to the classroom.

TRANSFER OPTIONS GateWay offers courses, programs and associate degree that are guaranteed to transfer to any one of Arizona’s three state universities (see page 11). Always check with an advisor, as some courses and programs may transfer to other colleges and universities nationwide.
SMALLER CLASS SIZE Most classes average 20-30 students in size at GateWay, whereas the same lower-division class at a university may average 100-125 students. A smaller class size increases the instructor’s opportunity to assist students on a one-on-one basis.

GateWay Community College is centrally located on an urban campus in Phoenix, Arizona. As the only community college with a METRO Light Rail stop on campus, getting here is easier than ever. Our location provides easy access to the Tempe and Downtown Phoenix campuses of ASU. GateWay’s proximity to the main business district of the nation’s sixth largest city puts you close to many of the top employers in the region. The area provides a mix of historic charm with newer housing developments, as well as abundant shopping, entertainment, restaurants and night life that are a light rail ride away.
The METRO Light Rail is a 20-mile system that consists of 50 trains, 28 stations and eight ‘park and ride’ facilities, with one located adjacent to campus. Trains operate approximately 20 hours a day, stopping at stations every ten minutes during regular business hours.

FINANCIAL AID Several options to finance your education exist, with some requiring no re-payment of funds: GRANTS
Funds that do not have to be repaid as long as you adhere to the requirements issued by the grantor. SCHOLARSHIPS

Many departments hire students and are accommodating to student class schedules. Working on campus is a good way to acquire employable skills and begin networking for full-time employment opportunities. LOANS

CHILDREN’S LEARNING CENTER GateWay’s on-campus Children’s Learning Center provides a safe, caring environment for students’ children at a reasonable cost while they are enrolled in classes. Hours are extended to serve students during intersessions and breaks to accommodate students’ clinical, work and study schedules. Afterschool childcare and tutoring is also available for school age children during the fall and spring semesters. The center also conducts a variety of summer camps for children ages 5-12. Summer care is available for children

The AGEC is designed for students planning to transfer to one of Arizona’s three state universities. The AGEC is a block of 35 required credits that satisfies the general curriculum requirements and may be applied to the graduation requirements for the majority of Arizona university majors. The AGEC is further divided into three areas of study to meet your career needs: liberal arts, math and science and business.

Are you looking to complete a two-year transfer degree? GateWay offers the AA, AS and ABUS Degrees that transfer in full to any of Arizona’s public universities. Built into these degrees is the appropriate AGEC transfer block. The AA, AS and ABUS degrees generally provide the core classes needed to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
MARICOPA-ASU PATHWAYS PROGRAM (MAPP) The MAPP is a partnership with Arizona State University that outlines specific courses to be taken at the community college level in preparation for specific bachelor’s degree program at ASU. There are currently more than 80 MAPPs to choose from with more being developed over time. Each MAPP has an associate’s degree built into it along with the desired grade point average needed to enter the advanced degree program at ASU.

The MAPP provides meaningful incentives for students who complete an AGEC and associate’s degree. The AAS Degree is designed to provide students interested in a technical field with the background needed for a specific occupation or occupational program. GateWay has a partnership with Northern Arizona University that allows those graduating with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in certain health care programs to apply their entire degree toward the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences. Prepare for one of the hottest jobs around. Learn to diagnose, repair and perform maintenance on automobiles and light trucks. As an Automotive Technician, you will need the skills to accurately diagnose the source of a problem and demonstrate quality workmanship. If you have an interest in a particular area, larger repair shops often employ specialized mechanics. Areas of specialization include air conditioning, driveability/emissions, front-end, brakes and alignment, transmission and heavy-
line mechanics. You can find employment in car dealerships, independent garages, private companies, government agencies or you can choose self-employment. HOW TO GET STARTED GateWay offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Automotive Technology that includes paid work experience at a local dealership, independent repair facility or an out-of-state repair facility.

CAREER DESCRIPTION As a General Office Clerk you will have many responsibilities including typing, data entry, faxing, preparing mailing lists, filing, stuffing envelopes, sorting checks, taking inventory, delivering messages and running errands. You can find employment in the public or private sector. Other titles that refer to General Office Clerks are Front Office Assistants, Office Assistants and Receptionists.
Administrative Assistants have greater responsibilities than those of General Office Clerks. You will schedule appointments and meetings, organize and maintain paper and electronic files, manage projects, take notes at meetings, prepare reports, draft letters, train employees, conduct research and maintain basic financial records like payroll. Employment can be found in all areas of the public and private sector. Administrative Assistants are also referred to as Secretaries and Administrative or Executive Secretaries. GateWay Community College is the only school in Arizona to offer programs for these professions and is one of the few community colleges in the nation certified by the National Court Reporters Association. Program offerings include an Associate in Applied Science Degree as well as a Certificate of Completion in Advanced Placement - Broadcast Captioning and Cart, Realtime Reporting - Judicial, Broadcast Captioning and CART. These programs help prepare you for the National Court Reporters Association certification exam and the Arizona certification test.
Captioning of live television programs is done by specially trained court reporters called Broadcast Captioners. Federal rules require captioning of hundreds of hours of live programming each week, creating a surge in career opportunities for people with the right skills.

First-line managers of retail sales workers supervise the employees in specialty departments. These managers train employees and schedule their hours; oversee ordering, inspection, pricing and inventory of goods; monitor sales activity; and make reports to store managers.

When you graduate from our program, you will be prepared for an entry-level position, with skills needed to help you advance to positions of greater

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK The retail industry is changing rapidly, diversifying their inventories and providing a greater variety of services to cater to the one-stop shopper. Larger stores are offering amenities such as dining areas, coffee shops and groceries. CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION IN REALTIME REPORTING - SCOPING
CAREER DESCRIPTION Scopists are hired by court reporters to edit and proofread transcripts while the reporters work in court or take depositions. The Scopists takes a rough copy of the proceeding – whether it is on disk, has been sent as an e-mail file or is simultaneously displayed on a computer connected to the court reporter’s machine – and reads the stenotype-to-English translation to check for any “mistranslates,” which are homonyms (“here” instead of “hear”) or other words such as proper names or technical terms that were not in the court reporter’s computer dictionary. Scopists make any necessary edits, ensure the transcript is in the requested formats and send the transcript back to the court reporter. In the case of simultaneous display, scopists make corrections or highlight any questions as the transcript scrolls on the computer screen. Scoping is an ideal career for a person who needs or prefers to work at home.
All the work is completed using computer software that can easily be transferred via online services.
HOW TO GET STARTED GateWay offers a Certificate of Completion in Realtime Reporting Scoping and is the only community college in Arizona approved by the National Court Reporters Association to offer this certificate. The scoping program can be completed in one year for quick entry into the job market. When you have completed your program, you will be prepared to find employment as a Scopist for court reporters. Credits you earn in the Scoping program will transfer to GateWay’s Realtime Reporting program (see page 31).

CAREER DESCRIPTION A love of nature, passion for the environment and concern for how precious water resources are monitored and maintained are just some of the characteristics of Hydrologic Technicians. Managing water in lakes, rivers and oceans requires, among others, requires dedication and skill. Ignorance in the care and maintenance of these water sources can lead to much larger repercussions, making Hydrologic Technicians vital to the health and sustainability of water resources. One great aspect of a career as a Hydrologic Technician is that in order to monitor water, you have to be where the water is. This means many professionals spend most of their time working outside and not a lot of time sitting behind a desk or in a cramped cubicle. Hydrologic Technicians’ primary job duties are to monitor the quality and quantity of surface and ground water, take samples and flow measurements, install gauges and survey cross sections of water ways. Data is then recorded and analyzed to determine if the water meets national and state standards and for historical records. CAREER DESCRIPTION Water quality matters. Whether the water is coming out of the faucet in your kitchen or is the output of a manufacturing plant, human safety and local, state and federal requirements mandate that water be of the highest quality and purity, all the time. Key to this process is Water/Wastewater Treatment Technicians, also known as Wastewater Treatment or Collections Operators, Water Treatment or Distribution Operations or Facilities Technicians. The primary job duties of operators and technicians include responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of a water supply or wastewater treatment facility in order to produce the highest quality water needed for municipal and industrial systems. This means acquiring an in-depth understanding of exactly how machinery and processes work in order to troubleshoot problems, streamline operations, repair or correct breakdowns and in general, make everything run smoothly. This requires operators and technicians to acquire a high level of math and science
proficiency and a thorough knowledge of water quality standards, plant operation and maintenance procedures in order to succeed in this profession. To keep things running smoothly you must care deeply about accuracy, attention to detail and the importance of your work to human life and safety. Working under pressure, often on deadline and many times without supervision, operators and technicians must efficiently manage workflow for superior water quality — without fail.
HOW TO GET STARTED The Water Technologies program at GateWay Community College provides the education and skills needed to become a successful operator or technician. Because employers need experienced technicians, the program provides the theoretical concepts as well as hands-on practical experience. This experience is gained by completing the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Water Resources Technologies with a track either in Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment or one of our Certificates of Completion in Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will assess, evaluate, treat and care for patients with lung and breathing problems, under the direction of a physician. Respiratory Therapists evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants to the elderly. They provide temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema and give emergency care to victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning or shock. They assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures to include: the use of oxygen mixtures, chest physiotherapy, delivery of aerosol medications and pulmonary function testing. Therapists also provide complex therapy requiring considerable independent judgment and the ability to work under pressure, such as caring for patients on life support in the intensive-care units of hospitals. The majority of Respiratory Therapists work in hospitals but employment can also be found in physician offices, home health agencies, clinics, home care delivery services and nursing homes.
Formal training is required to enter this profession and GateWay Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Respiratory Care. Upon graduation you will be eligible to take the National Board for Respiratory Care examinations. Continued education and experience will allow advancement within the field. You may also prepare patients for surgery. During surgery, you need to be able to anticipate surgeons’ needs by passing instruments, retracting tissue and operating equipment. After an operation, your responsibilities may include transferring the patient to the recovery room and sterilizing the operating room.

In this field, you will assist employees in maintaining a safe and accessible workplace. Facilities Technicians provide shortand longterm planning schedules to maintain compliance, a safe work environment and cost beneficial production schedules. You will work closely with safety and health officers, management and administration. You will be required to plan routine maintenance on equipment and systems used to operate physical plants. As an Electrical Technician you will work with the electrical systems of machines and equipment used in business and industry. The majority of Electricians do both construction and maintenance, but you can specialize. As a Construction Electrician, you will read blueprints to install and maintain a building’s electrical system. As a Electrician, you may lay the founding electrical system of a high rise building or perform maintenance on a residential home. Work sites will also vary and may include construction sites, health care facilities, manufacturing plants and warehouses. CAREER DESCRIPTION As a vital part of the health care team, you will help improve the health and quality of life for the physically and mentally ill. Your duties can include helping patients eat, dress, bathe, walk and get in and out of bed. Nurse Assistants also monitor and report changes in patients’ physical, mental and emotional conditions. Compassion is a very important quality in this profession, as many of the individuals you assist are confined to hospitals or nursing homes. Nurse Assistants work under the supervision of the nursing and medical staff. You can find employment in hospitals, nursing or residential care facilities or at a patient’s home. Nursing Assistants are also referred to as Nursing Aides.

provides those interested in a career in Nursing an entry level employment opportunity. ACCREDITATION
Considered an integral part of the healthcare team, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) work under the direct supervision of registered nurses and/ or physicians. LPNs perform many duties including assisting patients with activities of daily living, taking vital signs, observing patients, dressing wounds and administering medications. Individuals interested in becoming a licensed practical nurse should have a sincere interest in caring for people, display professional behaviors and possess sound judgment as it will be their responsibility to provide basic bedside care for patients who may be experiencing substantial alterations in health.
GateWay Community College offers the Certificate of Completion in Practical Nursing through the Fast Track Practical Nursing Program. The design of the curriculum permits an economical and efficient method of education to prepare the graduate to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEXPN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing. Applicants may enter the Fast Track Practical Nursing Program after completing the required prerequisites.

Centro también realice una serie de campamentos de verano para niños entre los 3-12 años de edad. CENTRO DE APRENDIZAJE PARA NIÑOS El Centro de Aprendizaje Para Niños en GateWay provee especial cuidado y un ambiente seguro para los hijos de los estudiantes a un costo razonable mientras se encuentran matriculados en las clases. El horario es extendido para servir a los estudiantes durante el programa entre sesiones y tiempos libres.
