MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2019

A Message from Principal Steve Tortorello '04 Legend has it that, on his deathbed, St. Dominic’s final word to his friends and followers was, “Begin.” This simple, single-word command summarizes the spirit of Dominic’s work. There is no time to waste. There’s a whole world out there that needs the Gospel message. So – get started! For our community, that call to get started was answered 60 years ago by an alliance of individuals – lay people from surrounding parishes, priests, bishops, and the Dominican Sisters – when they banded together to found Marian Catholic. As we celebrate this milestone birthday throughout this school year, we are reminded that St. Dominic is still calling on us. He calls us to minister to our students by providing them with an excellent college preparatory education and forming them as people who are ready to do God’s work in the world. He calls us to joyfully spread a message of hope and Truth through all avenues. We have been blessed with many opportunities this past fall to spread our message to the greater community. Sr. Mary Jo became an overnight sensation. She broadcast her message of joy and faith “across the dial” on multiple TV programs and virally across the internet. The ABC 7 Friday Flyover competition gave us the chance to put our students front and center on local news coverage so that the whole Chicagoland area could see the fruits of our ministry. These opportunities and others allowed us to tell the world that the Gospel is being preached at the corner of Joe Orr and Ashland and that all are welcome to join us in hearing it, living it, and preaching it. So, as we continue to celebrate our 60th birthday, we’re happy to share this edition of Marian Matters with you so that everyone knows the good news of what’s going on at Marian Catholic. We have begun the good work. Now, let us continue!

MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2019

Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, OP, is all about being real. She is who God has called her to be, vowed religious, teacher, and, as her now famous pitch last summer proved, skilled athlete. At first, the roles may seem somewhat incongruous, but Sister Mary Jo said ‘yes’ to all of them, believing each allows God to work through her. Even as a pitcher on the mound at Guaranteed Rate Field! Few could have foreseen the media frenzy that occurred after Sister Mary Jo threw out the first pitch at the White Sox game on August 18. Not even Sister herself. When Dan Kozlowski, Marian Catholic’s Vice President for Advancement, first approached Sister Mary Jo about the opportunity, her response was “Really? No way! Seriously? That’s awesome!” Her reaction wasn’t surprising, since Sister began playing softball and volleyball in fifth grade, pursuits that continued through her undergraduate years at Vermilion Community College and the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. Sister’s perfect strike drew the interest of television and radio stations near and far, including outlets in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and Japan! For some, seeing a nun in habit throwing out the first pitch may have appeared countercultural. Sister Mary Jo sees it differently. Embracing religious life doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself. “You don’t have to give anything up,” she said. “God uses your passions.” When asked, “Were you surprised she would do this?” one of her students replied, “Absolutely not. That’s who she is.” Obviously, Sister hasn’t given up her love for sports. She just became part of another team. Sister Mary Jo shares her sports enthusiasm with another respected religious, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, of Loyola University Chicago. As chaplain of the men’s basketball team, Sister Jean became an iconic courtside figure during the Ramblers run to the 2018 NCAA Division I Final Four. Sister Mary Jo and Sister Jean recently had the occasion to meet and discovered they have many similarities in spite of their 50 year age difference. At 99 years of age, Sister Jean is an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. Last September she received the Sword of Loyola, the school’s highest honor. This past November, she was honored with the Stan Musial Award for extraordinary character. Neither Sister Mary Jo nor Sister Jean live for the personal spotlight. Both make it clear they are motivated to do what is good for each of their religious communities and the schools they serve. Like Sister Mary Jo, Sister Jean played sports in high school, basketball specifically, a foreshadowing of her role with the Ramblers. “God took my gift and shared it with people around the world,” says Sister Jean. “Sports is relatable, it’s understood around the world.” Despite the declining numbers of women religious, both Sister Jean and Sister Mary Jo maintain hope for their communities and their respective missions. Sister Jean holds great faith for the Church and young people today based on the number of students she sees completing their Sacraments or participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) every year. Sister Mary Jo sees it every day in her classroom, “So many young people have a hunger for community and Truth.” Whether the call comes from God, the bullpen, or the bench, both of these inspiring women eagerly say ‘yes!’ Perhaps it’s that simple for the rest of us; just saying ‘yes’ to our callings, whatever they may be. Then, as Sister Mary Jo encourages her students, “Do your best, and let God do the rest.”

“Embracing religious life doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself. You don’t have to give anything up. God uses our passions.”

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin!

MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

A FAMILY AFFAIR 60 YEARS

By Josh Ladner

When Marian Catholic High School opened its doors 60 years ago, it welcomed a freshman class that would become the first members of their families to attend the new high school at the corner of Joe Orr Road and Ashland Avenue in Chicago Heights. Over the years, Marian Catholic has seen thousands of students from different families enter its doors, some of whom span generations of the same family, otherwise known as legacy families. By definition, a legacy family consists of students and alumni whose extended family members, including parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and/or siblings, attended, or currently attend, Marian Catholic. Family connections are one of the core strengths of the Marian Catholic community. The continued participation of parents and alumni in the life of the school ensures that the Dominican values and Catholic traditions that make up Marian Catholic live on for generations to come. We had the opportunity to speak with three families that have had multiple generations attend Marian Catholic, two of which still have current students. We asked members of each family to respond to a series of questions about Marian Catholic High School and to share some of their Spartan stories. Rita (Stanfa '69) Rohn has a total of 28 individuals in her family that attended Marian Catholic. In the 60 years that the school has been open, there has only been one year in which a family member was not enrolled at the school. Eileen (Gallagher '78) Daw’s family also has a deep connection with Marian Catholic with 27 graduates, including spouses who are Marian Catholic alumni. Eileen’s parents sent her, along with her six siblings, to Marian Catholic. Her Uncle Donald and Aunt Patricia sent her six cousins to Marian Catholic as well. Eileen’s sister, Jeannie (Gallagher '80) DiLuia, has one child left at Marian Catholic, senior Caroline DiLuia '19. Jim Dee '80 and his three brothers attended Marian Catholic starting with Jim’s freshman year in 1976. Jim and John Dee '88 chose Catholic education for their children as well. Jim’s children, Matthew '07, Meaghan '09, Shannon '11, and Katlynn '13, are all recent alumni. John’s twins, Ryan and Nick graduated in 2018; daughter, Lannah, is currently a sophomore. Rita (R), Eileen (E), and Jim ( J) fielded a variety of questions about Marian Catholic, their days as students, and the importance of Catholic education.

10 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2019

Q: What about Marian Catholic is special to you and your family? R: The way Marian Catholic is a part of the community and a part of our whole family’s lives. I’ve kept up, of course, with my family, but I have also kept up with many, many friends from Marian Catholic. Some of my best friends graduated from Marian Catholic with me and we keep in touch and they’re all over the country. E: It’s probably the Sisters and the Catholic side of Marian that is the biggest root, they’re at the core of it all. That is the biggest draw for all of us. J: For us, we just really consider Marian Catholic a part of our family. The school has basically helped raise my brothers and I as well as our kids and reinforce all of the things that we tried to teach as a family. It’s kind of nice to have that extra reinforcement at Marian for the 4 years that everyone is there. Q: Why was Marian Catholic the school of choice for your family growing up and why still today? R: They definitely wanted us to have a Catholic education. When my Mom and Dad decided to live in Chicago Heights, they wanted to live near St. Agnes and then of course, later on, Marian Catholic was built and my parents sent the ones that could go to Marian, although three of my siblings couldn’t go because it wasn’t built yet. E: Marian Catholic offers the type of educational environment where an average student is elevated to another level. J: Our parents had always valued Catholic education, so we had all gone to Catholic grade school. It was unnatural for us to not go. I don’t even remember sitting down, as kids do now, and our parents giving us the choice of where we wanted to go. It was just what our family did.

I think the primary motivator was our parents’ belief in the importance of Catholic education for all of the reasons related to growing up with that Christian reinforcement. Certainly the academic side was a bonus, but I think it had more to do with being a Catholic school.

Q: Why do you still remain loyal to Marian Catholic? R: I think it’s a great institution. They promote good values and they have a very well rounded curriculum. And I think they have tons of clubs, anything anybody wants to do, they will find something at Marian Catholic. E: Because I can’t say no to the Sisters!...But seriously, I believe in the Marian Catholic mission and believe that a Marian Catholic education does truly make a difference. J: First would be the friendships and the families that we’ve gotten to know over a couple of generations. It was families like the Zerantes, the Gallaghers, and the Zarlengos that were multi-generational just like us. Marian is just kind of in our DNA at this point. Q: What things have you seen that are the same today as they were when you were a student? R: I was very happy with the teachers I had at Marian and I was very happy with my kid’s teachers and my grandson’s teachers. I think the quality of the teaching is still very good at Marian Catholic. E: The heart of Marian, meaning the teaching of the kids to be responsible and soulful individuals and to truly care about each other, is what I’ve seen has stayed the same. J: The school’s emphasis on getting the kids out into the community to do service activities. Whether that’s the Discovery In Service program or anything else they may do such as fundraising, etc.

Certainly what has stayed the same is the commitment to the Dominican values, even with fewer Sisters that are teaching in the school, they have always made sure to emphasize those values. Q: What things have you seen that are different today from when you were a student? R: I think what has changed the most is that it is larger and has more gyms and more sports. When I was there, there wasn’t a lot of stuff you could join. E: The physical school itself is what has changed the most. When I was there, there were only three halls. You didn’t have Dominican Way; you didn’t have what is now 3rd hall. The theater was there and there was a small band and music room, but that was it. And we only had the East Gym. We didn’t have the West Gym, we didn’t have the football stadium or the tennis courts. J: What’s different is that the kids come from far away. When I was there, almost everybody came from one of the surrounding suburbs. Now you have kids that come from far away and that certainly was not the case in the past. On the positive side, what that also means, is that you’ve got more diversity both in terms of religion and ethnicity. Both of which are being handled well and actually are beneficial for the kids. Q: What do you think makes Catholic education still relevant today? R: I think that when you have a Catholic education you can talk about the morality of things like what’s important and what’s not important. You can talk about doing the right thing, and I think that having that as part of your curriculum and offering kids options of helping people out and doing service work, is very nice to see. E: I think that Catholic education is that moral compass. I think it’s important for kids to see people living out their beliefs. We as parents try to set that example,

Clockwise from top Gallagher Family Front Row: Liam Kroning '12, Christine DiLuia '13, Lizzie Gallagher '12, Stephen Daw '13, Kerry (Gallagher '82) DiSanto, Mary (Gallagher '83) McCann, Katie (Gallagher '96) McClellan, Jonathan Gallagher '04, and Chris O’Hea '85

but the kids can see that every day at a Catholic school. To know who you are and what you’re doing is really important for young people these days and it needs to be reinforced because they have so many messages that come at them from so many different sources. Far more sources from when I was in high school since we didn’t have the internet or cell phones or social media. J: There is a discipline in Catholic education that there isn’t in the public schools. Whether it’s making them attend certain things or even the dress code, it’s all still important and it doesn’t happen in other environments. I think it’s [Catholic education] more relevant than ever because of the things that relate to community service and understanding your surroundings. Kids don’t get as much reinforcement of religious and ethical values at home, so I think it’s important that they have somewhere to go where those things are still important. Q: Can you tell us a particular story that stands out to you when you think about your days at Marian Catholic? R: I like to talk about how much fun we had at the sock hops when I was there. They were always a fun time and I was just very blessed because I really think my class of 1969 was the best class to graduate from there.

When my father passed away after I graduated, I remember very distinctly all of my friends from Marian coming to the wake and funeral. It was such a good outreach for me and such an amount of caring that I think was instilled in us through our families and through Marian. E: My very favorite story is when we won the Foghat concert at Marian. We won a contest sponsored by WMET radio station. We all worked very hard and collected signatures in order to win the contest. An added plus was that the concert was on my 18th birthday. J: My junior year, I played football and was also on the Mathlete team with Sister Blaise. We would have tournaments between the schools in our conference for math contests. She convinced me that I needed to be on the team even though I didn’t really have time. So, I can remember playing in a JV football game on a Monday, right after school, and then coming back to school to change and hop on a bus to Joliet to take math tests at night with the Mathlete team. Feels Like Home To Me 60 YEARS

By Allen Marazas '64

When Thomas Wolfe famously wrote, “you can’t go home again” in the title of his 1940 epic novel, he was obviously unaware of the relationship between Catholic school teachers and their alma maters. Heather Gossart, Senior Consultant at the National Catholic Education Association noted in a recent article in NCEA Talk, “While there are no national statistics on the number of students who return to teach at the schools they attended…as many as one in ten Catholic school teachers are themselves graduates.” In this, once again, Marian Catholic exceeds the norm since one-third of our professional staff are Marian graduates. Marian Catholic began hiring alumni in the mid-1960’s. The first Marian alumnus to be hired as a full time teacher and coach was John “Terry” Flanagan '62 who taught English to freshmen and sophomores during the 1966-67 school year. Flanagan was quite well known throughout the Marian community when he was hired, primarily through his athletic achievements while a student. In his senior year, he was named All-State by the Chicago American and Associated Press, MVP in the All-Catholic Metro Conference, and Chicago Heights Star Player of the Year. Flanagan’s record for the highest single game score (62 pts. v. Maryville) still stands. Flanagan was Marian’s first super-star athlete. Terry came back to Marian Catholic after teaching at St. Giles grade school in Oak Park. He said returning to Marian was not at all awkward. Several of his former teachers and coaches “took me under their wing” and being back at Marian “just felt right. It was like coming home.” The idea of “coming home” is a common theme among many of the alumni who have returned to their alma mater. Marian Catholic President Vince Krydynski '81 asserts, “I never really left. I was reunited with Marian Catholic around 1990 through Vice Principal Jack Heneghan.” Vince joined the Marian Catholic Advisory Board in 2004, remained when the board became a full Board of Directors in 2009, took a full time position as Vice President of

Institutional Advancement in 2013, and became the first Marian Catholic lay President in 2016. Theology teacher Jen Pasyk '92 said, “I came back to Marian because I believe in what we do here. I know as a member of the faculty that my aim is higher than my content. My students can forget everything I said that they could read in their textbook, but they’re not going to forget that I loved them and that I humbly tried to show them what it means to put their faith into action. I could have gone to any school and taught a curriculum, but to affect change in the world I had to go somewhere that believes there’s something better that this world has to offer and demands that I teach that perspective so I had to come home. I had to come back to Marian. It’s that simple.” Math teacher Erin Russell '02 also hopes to touch her students beyond curriculum. “When I look back at my time at Marian as a student, know that it was definitely a turning point in my life. I developed in ways that I know would never have been possible in a public school, specifically in my faith in God and in forming leadership skills in the band program. Coming back to teach at Marian, my hope has been that I can help my students to develop into the persons God is intending them to be during this critical turning point in their lives.” Dean of Women and science teacher Jennifer Clifford '88 had to come a long way to make her return to Marian. “My return to Marian coincided with my return to Illinois after many years of going to school and teaching in Maine. My return allowed me to continue to grow as an educator in a learning community that shares my values and my family’s Marian Catholic history.” Giving back some of what they gained from the school is another motive frequently expressed by our alumni teachers. “I returned to Marian in fall of 2010 because I wanted to ‘pay forward’ all of the great things Marian had done for me,” said Marian Catholic Principal, Steve Tortorello '04. “We’re really proud of the fact that so many alumni have answered the call to return to Marian Catholic. Right now over one-third of

the teachers are alumni and if you add in parents of alumni that number balloons to nearly half of all teachers. As we know, teaching in Catholic schools is not a lucrative profession, so the fact that so many individuals have made the sacrifice to serve in a Catholic school speaks volumes for the impact that Marian Catholic has had on them.” Several teachers expressed the idea of community as their reason for wanting to return to Marian Catholic. According to Guidance Counselor Katie Bluhm '95, “You aren’t just an employee and our students aren’t numbers. Every person in this building matters. When you walk through the doors at Marian you feel like you are ‘home.’” Math teacher Lisa (Yock '87) Denty said, “I wanted to share my Marian experience with other students. It [Marian] is a big part of our family. My brother and sister-in-law went to Marian Catholic. My cousin’s three children are here as well. Finally, my own children are receiving the education that I have provided for so many over the years. Our family doesn’t know high school any other way.” Family connections are not at all unusual at Marian Catholic. Science teacher Ben Zerante '02 and English teacher Nora Zerante '11, his sister, now work together as faculty members. Their uncle, Vince Zerante, recently retired after teaching science at the school for over 40 years, many of which he also served as department chair. When social studies teacher Brian Iggins '08 returned, Marian Catholic already had another Iggins on staff, his mom, theology teacher Denise. Don’t misunderstand, that’s not why Brian is here. He says, “The reason I came back to Marian is the family that the Marian faculty becomes with their students. The bond between me and some of my teachers when I was at Marian was so strong, and it is not found in every school. Marian has that family feel between students and faculty, and I wanted a chance to engage in that kind of relationship with the students here; to pass along the gift that I received during my time as a student.” Director of STEM Education, Becky (Marazas '94) Bosco readily admits that her parents did

Left to Right: Andy DeLaurentis '95, Kerri Evans '96, Carol (Burke '81) Swanson, Becky (Marazas '94) Bosco, Kathleen Mesterharm '01, Ashley Sypole '08, Brian Iggins '08, Justin Thirstrup '08, Nick Rohn '92, Tom Lachcik '96, Sylvia (Sarmiento '77) Cifelli, Vince Krydynski '81, Erin (Falucskai '02) Russell, Mike Carlson '91, George Shimko '03, and Steve Tortorello '04

have something to do with her return to Marian Catholic “So, returning to Marian, long story short, is really a reflection of seeing the loyalty and [sense of ] family my father maintained and was afforded after being at Marian for most of his life. The combination finally inspired me to take a leap of faith and follow my parents’ advice of ‘You should apply at Marian!’ given each year when teaching in a public school weighed heavier and heavier on my heart. My ‘why’ is really a thank you to Marian for both providing a wonderful place for my dad for so many years and to my parents for their unwavering belief and encouragement. My only regret is that I did not listen sooner and have the privilege of working alongside my father in the halls where I grew up.” However dedicated they are, Marian Catholic’s alumni teachers are not without a sense of humor. Director of Network and Computer Science Department Chairman Mike Carlson '91 quipped, “I came back because I wanted to ‘Make Marian Great Again.’” Assistant Dean of Students Andy DiLaurentis '95, always practical and pragmatic, stated, “I work here because they hired me.” The humor fades for a moment as

each describes his commitment to Marian. Said Carlson, “I came back because I believe in Marian Catholic, its community and the education it provided me. I would not be who I am today without Marian. Why not give back to Marian?” DeLaurentis asserted, “I remain here because I believe in the school’s academic standards. The kids are great and work hard, the faculty is top notch, and my bosses know what they’re doing.” As for myself, Marian Catholic has been my life since I was 13 years old seeing Marian for the first time as I, and several friends, got off a Safeway bus at the corner of Ashland Avenue and Joe Orr Road arriving to take the entrance exam. I walked through those front doors and never left. I never wanted to be anywhere else, four years a student, 46 years teaching. I brought my three daughters to Marian Catholic to learn what I had been taught. Practically everything I know worth knowing I learned from a dozen or so great teachers and mentors from two generations ago. Most of them are gone now, but I am their legacy just as I hope my legacy will be the students I taught who will return to Marian Catholic one day to teach future generations of Scholars with a Soul.

Finally, I return to the words of Marian Catholic’s President Vince Krydynski '81 regarding the impact and potential of alumni faculty, “Given my current role at the school, having alumni return to work at Marian Catholic excites me. Working in a Catholic school requires a personal sacrifice. But many return because of what this school meant to them and they want to be part of that for the next generation. As the leader of the school, how can you not be excited about the passion and potential that rests within these walls?... Catholic schools are facing challenges today that were never imagined ten years ago. Marian Catholic is no different. While Marian Catholic is thriving, I want my alma mater to excel. I want to provide the greatest opportunities possible to every student we serve. Marian Catholic has big plans for the future. To continue to build upon what we have and catapult us into the future we need the support of all our alumni, alumni parents, current parents and friends.” Be assured that Marian Catholic’s journey into that future will be confidently led by our present and future alumni teachers. So, it seems, you can go home again.

Fine Arts

By Emily Kaderabek '19 and Nasira Watts '19

THEATER Marian Catholic’s Croarkin Auditorium was filled with suspense and mystery this fall during the Fine Arts Department’s production of Dial M for Murder. The 1952 play by Frederick Knott and later adapted by director Alfred Hitchcock in 1954, was a contrast from the school’s typical upbeat plays, but that does not mean students did not have a blast putting it together! The cast, albeit small – consisting of only seven talented students – kept the audience’s attention through every scene. They were captivated by Angel Alzeidan’s '19 portrayal of the innocent Margot, unsettled by the evil Tony, played by Michael Breslin '19, and intrigued by the blackmailed and failed murderess Lesgate, portrayed by Nasira Watts '19. The crowd was transfixed by Joe Chambers’ '19 interpretation of Max, humored by Gia Mele’s '22 character Hubbard, and engrossed in the performances of Ashley Saul '20 and Andy Vasquez '21. One can only imagine what new and returning cast members will bring to the table in the Theatre Department’s spring musical production of Anything Goes, directed by Laura Hilger '14, musical direction by Claire Jakubisin, technical direction by Sam Sullivan, and choreography by Brandi Brumfield. It may not be as dark and mysterious as the fall play, but it will keep the audience on the edge of their seats all the same.

SPEECH With the beginning of a new speech season comes the fervor of many eager competitors. In a tournament at Thornton, Marian Catholic placed 4th overall, advancing many talented students to finals: Fiona Keating '20, 1st in Prose; Angel Alzeidan '19 and Nasira Watts '19, 2nd in Dramatic Duet Acting; John Hatcher '20, 2nd in Informative Speaking and 5th in Original Oratory; Michael Breslin '19, 2nd in Special Occasion Speaking; Summer Kerksick '19, 2nd in Impromptu; Nasira Watts '19, 4th in Extemporaneous Speaking; Diamond Jones '19, 6th in Informative Speaking; and, Paige Parker '20, 6th in Radio. The speech team, coached by Laura Hilger '14, is a prime example of the diligent, hardworking students celebrated at Marian Catholic; some students stay until 7 o’clock at night practicing their pieces, all in preparation for the early Saturday morning tournaments. As the season progresses, the team is filled with optimism, hoping to advance to the state series. Based on their hard work and dedication, the odds are in their favor!

CHOIR Love was in the air with Marian Catholic’s Fall Choir concert, held in the Croarkin Theater on October 11. The theme, Songs of the Heart, was presented by Choir Co-Presidents Angel Alzeidan '19 and Bria Brunfield '19 as encapsulating love in all of its forms, spanning the love we hold for our families, friends, and most importantly, God. All four choirs (Concert, Spartan, Varsity, Chamber) were highlighted, directed by Mrs. Claire Jakubisin and featuring accompanist Mrs. Vonda Hardesty. The four choirs had been preparing love songs since the beginning of the school year. Popular selections included Remember Me from the Disney movie, Coco, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud. While the mood ranged from bittersweet to affectionate, the energy was never lacking. The spirit of the concert was particularly featured through the song Bless the Lord sung by Chamber Choir, an after school vocal club which has been exploring various genres this year. The Gospel song was arranged by two Varsity Choir students, Bria Brumfield '19 and Nathaniel Martin '19. The concert closed with an electric performance of Baba Yetu from the video game Civilization IV. The song is a Swahili adaptation of the Lord’s Prayer and was sung together by all of the choirs. The fall concert was not only a testament of the choir’s talent, but a demonstration of the many ways love reveals itself in our lives.

The Marian Catholic Band recently closed out another successful marching season with their show, “Triptych” featuring music from Stacey Garup, Samuel Barber, Béla Bartók, and Dave Holland. The program 5 presented three one-act plays with distinct themes, each of them connected almost “by accident” as director Mr. Greg Bimm stated in an interview with FloMarching. Blistering cold and strong winds did not stop the band from taking first in their class at the Illinois State University Invitational Marching Championships, held on October 20. The victory marked the continuation of their 39 year streak as Class 3A Champions. The band additionally came home with captions in both Music and General Effect within their class. At the Bands of America Grand National Championships, held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Marian Catholic advanced to the semifinals and placed an impressive 15th overall to conclude the marching season. “This marching season was honestly one of the most emotional out of my four years at Marian,” reflected senior Julian Wiggins, Band President for the 2018-19 school year. “The responsibility was a role I never even fathomed to hold, but it was an honor.” This winter, the band also took their talents on the road to various grade schools in the area, spreading holiday cheer to hundreds of youth with selections such as “Deck the Halls” and “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Recognition for Marian Catholic’s renowned band program didn’t just take place on the field. Bands of America named the Finalist Directors Meeting Room after Director Greg Bimm honoring his commitment to excellence in music education. A few weeks later, Prairie State College President Dr. Terri L. Winfree presented Mr. Bimm with its Pioneer Pillar of the Community Award, in appreciation for his contributions to the college and the community it serves. The Marian Catholic Band continues to display P.R.I.D.E. in each project they undertake, never failing to make the school community proud of their efforts and continued dedication.

VOLLEYBALL Build a new trophy case? With the success level of Marian Catholic’s women’s volleyball squad in recent years, the amount of hardware has nearly warranted a new trophy case. Highlighted by the 2016 IHSA Class 3A state championship, Marian Catholic seniors completed an incredible run this fall. During the last three campaigns, the Spartans compiled an impressive 99-24 record, the most successful three-year run in history. During the recently completed season, Marian Catholic posted a 32-7 mark, including a fourth straight IHSA Regional crown, third straight LincolnWay Central Invite title and second consecutive Rich East Tourney championship. The Spartans claimed opponents from five different states. In the last two seasons, only postseason setbacks to eventual state champion Marist prevented more hardware. “Arguably, this is one of the strongest squads in Marian Catholic history,” assessed Head Coach Ryan Summers, who has compiled a 204-105 record in eight seasons. “Three years in a row, we’ve had single-digit losses and half of our losses were to state champions. “We played one of the toughest schedules around, including last year’s Florida state champion and last year’s Kentucky state champion, who was ranked number-one in the nation. Our Lady Spartans stepped up to the challenge and I am very proud of them.” Highlighted by Under Armour All-American Temitayo Thomas-Ailara '19 (Northwestern) and two-time ESCC all-conference selection Lauren Hatch '19 (South Florida), the senior class featured great talent and leadership. That group also included Caroline DiLuia, Jaya Hall, Erin Kelly, Gabriella Tumacder, and Jessica Walton. “The seniors were the heart and core of our team,” Summers praised. “Talent has a lot to do with team success, however, leadership and the right tone in practice are often set by a team’s senior class and that is what makes the difference between performing and out-performing. That sort of experience and leadership really helped us start off on the correct foot.”

DIVING Freshman diver Isabel Correa followed up winning the Lincoln-Way East Sectional with a score of 174.10 and 27th place at the IHSA State meet.

Ignited by two state-qualifying entries, the Spartan women’s tennis team earned second place in its own IHSA Sectional. Sophomore Samantha Brassel (left) notched a 3-2 record in singles at the IHSA State tourney and the sophomore doubles duo of Lilli Hansen and Taylor Trojan (right) also made the grade at the state level.

The Best Popcorn in the Conference… Maybe the State! That’s just one of the compliments you often hear about Marian Catholic’s concession stands, efficiently managed by Marian Catholic alumni parent Valerie “Val” Middleton. After years of dedicated service at the concession stands, and serving as hospitality representative for Spartan events, Marian Catholic named the concession stands in honor of Val and her family during halftime of the men’s basketball game on November 30. Since Val and Drew Middleton began sending their four sons – Erick '98, Roderick '01, Cedrick '03, and Derrick '07 – to Marian Catholic in the mid-1990s, Marian Catholic has been fortunate to have the service of Val and her family. “It’s amazing how many compliments we receive about the food and hospitality Val provides at our concession stands,” Athletic Director Kevin Kelly '80 praised. “We know that’s always one part of our hosting operation that runs with a tremendous work ethic and efficiency. So many people have been accustomed to her friendly face and great hospitality.” Like son Erick, who now serves as Marian’s head football coach, mom Val devotes just as much time and effort to making the Marian Concession stands the best they can be.

Highlighted by several athletes who led Marian Catholic to state tournament competition, the Spartans had 10 athletes commit to continued student-athlete careers at the collegiate level during the November “signing” period. The group included former IHSA wrestling state champion Travis Ford-Melton (Purdue University) and several athletes that sparked Marian to a berth in the 2017 IHSA Class 3A Baseball state title contest. Seven baseball athletes making commitments included Michael Bohlen (Northern Kentucky), Cameron Bufford (Grambling State), Angelo Cantelo (Lewis), Pierce Jones (Northern Illinois), Chandler Kerr (Concordia), Julian Ledezma (North Park) and Jordan Smevoll (Webster). Invest in Kids Act Benefits Marian Catholic Students By Sister Judine Hilbing, OP A great wellspring of hope and anticipation rose up and flowed into all the activities surrounding the newly approved Invest In Kids Act and the subsequent Illinois State Tax Credit Scholarship Program. During the fall semester, Marian Catholic High School conducted workshops, set up email communication groups, trolled Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) websites, and engaged in every possible means of helping parents submit their applications and upload their documents as soon as the process went live on each of the SGO websites. The two largest SGOs available to families were The Big Shoulders Fund and Empower Illinois. Administrators and technology personnel opened the doors of Marian Catholic to parents who would not otherwise have access to a robust computer and internet service. Staff members assisted parents with completing their applications and uploading the required documents.

The number of families throughout the State of Illinois who submitted applications was staggering; only a small percentage of eligible families actually received a scholarship through the Illinois State Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Here at Marian Catholic, only 31 of 343 qualifying students were granted full or partial scholarships. Collectively, the students received a total of $309,616 in tuition assistance. For these 31 fortunate students, this new scholarship program has been an unbelievable blessing. Approximately 300 Spartan parents, however, remain hopeful for the 2019-2020 academic year.

SAVE THE DATE

20 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2019

This hope is predicated on a variety of circumstances, including: ■ Graduating seniors will not be in the application pool for year two. ■ Current freshmen who registered in a public school because they did not receive a state scholarship are less likely to reapply and transfer schools. ■ Year one was a learning curve for many parents and they will be better prepared for year two, especially in understanding how critical the time stamp on the application is to the award process. ■ Parents will be watching the websites of all SGOs to be ready to apply as soon as applications become available mid-January. ■ Individuals and businesses who donated to the program in year one will find the process much easier in year two. ■ The Advancement team continues to publicize information that will make it easier for those who pay Illinois state taxes to take advantage of the opportunity to direct 75% of what they owe to the State of Illinois to the Scholarship Program.

Marian Catholic staff remain committed to doing everything possible to support families in accessing tuition assistance from the Illinois State Tax Credit Scholarship Program, from other scholarship granting organizations, from private and corporate resources, and from endowed accounts. More detailed information about the Illinois State Tax Credit Scholarship Program is available on Marian Catholic’s website at www.marianchs.com. Jamie Hickey Manahan

1981

By Brendan Diamond Jamie (Hickey '81) Manahan didn’t always see herself as a leader in the field of fundraising and development. A mother of four born within three years of each other, Jamie’s career path zigged where she expected it to zag, until she found herself taking over the role of Executive Director of Development at Purdue University Northwest this past fall. After graduating from Loyola University Chicago, Jamie went to work in the hospitality industry, which was about as far as one could get from the world of development she would later inhabit. “I started at the front desk at the Chicago Hilton and Towers,” Jamie explained, “and I worked my way up from there.” Jamie’s twelve year career with the Chicago Hilton and Towers allowed her to prosper in front office supervision, staff training and development and human resource management. When she realized her young family needed her at home more, Jamie applied for a job at Saint Xavier University near her residence in the Beverly/Morgan Park area. Starting in the Career Center, and with some community fundraising experience behind her, she eventually moved into the development office as the Associate Director of Development and soon after as the Executive Director of Alumni Relations. After fifteen years at Saint Xavier, and with her children grown, Jamie found herself desiring a new challenge. She found that new challenge two years ago with an opportunity at Purdue University Northwest (PNW), as the Major Gifts Officer. This past September, she was promoted to Executive Director of Development. She said her favorite thing about her new job is how easy it makes getting out of bed in the morning. “When you really love your job,” she explained, “it’s easy to brave the traffic and the longer commute.” Jamie’s job now encompasses developing, leading, and executing fundraising strategies for Purdue University Northwest that effectively support the priorities and strategic goals of the university. She is also responsible for the daily operation and supervision of the fundraising programs and development team. “I love Purdue University Northwest because it has so much to offer our students and the community,” Jamie said. “We have a reduced out-of-state rate for Illinois residents, which is a great way to draw students in from surrounding cities and towns in Illinois. We have so many great programs to boast about at PNW. Our Engineering, Counseling, Education, and Technology programs are strong and our Business College is AACSB Accredited. We have a stand-out Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) program too. Our Nursing program is a Center for Excellence, one of just a handful in the country. We are also in the process of building a state-of-the-art Bioscience Innovation Building, which is opening in 2020. A lot of great things are happening at Purdue Northwest and I am delighted to be part of it all.” Jamie credits Marian Catholic for much of her success. “I was a transfer student my sophomore year,” Jamie recalled, “So I missed out on a lot of experiences freshman year. But everyone was so warm and inviting, that I was easily able to become a part of the community.” She made good friends with people in her class like Carol (Burke '81) Swanson, current Marian Catholic Director of Engagement & Stewardship, and Vince Krydynski '81, Marian Catholic President. To this day, she noted, her best friends are the same people with whom she met in high school. “Marian Catholic allowed me to meet my dearest friends and laid a valuable foundation for the person I am today,” she said. Jamie is a proud Spartan and will be for life!

Paul Martinez

1983

While his mother envisioned him as a veterinarian, life took Paul Martinez ˈ83 in an entirely different direction. After graduating from Marian Catholic, Martinez spent four semesters at Illinois State, including one semester in France at the University of Grenoble through a foreign exchange program. After realizing his interests lay in mass communications and TV broadcast production, Paul transferred to Columbia College Chicago, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting and Telecommunications in 1987. At Columbia, Paul attended information sessions with recruiters from CNN. It was around that time that the broadcast network was looking to open new bureaus and expand their news operations. Instead of working on his Master’s as he had planned, Paul took a leap of faith and moved to Atlanta where CNN’s headquarters is located, for an experience he describes as “irreplaceable” (both professionally and personally, since he met his wife at CNN!). Within two years, Paul knew he wanted to be a cameraman, but given the very long wait for a chance at field rotation, he and his wife decided to make the move to the ABC affiliate in Santa Barbara, California where he learned to be a skilled TV cameraman. Two years later, they left The Golden State for positions with the Tulsa, Oklahoma CBS affiliate. With the advent of local 24-hour news ventures came an opportunity at Chicago’s CLTV. Paul interviewed, was hired, and returned home to the Windy City where he has lived since 1992. After five years, Paul was offered a position with ABC7 where he was hired an Editor/Cameraman. He not only captures newsworthy moments, but edits them as well, using the same software as students at Marian Catholic!

2000

Erik ‘EJ’ Ramos '00, a member of the elite U.S. Army Band, played at the Capitol Rotunda as the casket of former President George H.W. Bush was brought in. The band, also known as Pershing’s Own band, was founded in 1922 by Army Chief of Staff General John J. Pershing to emulate European military bands heard during World War I. The band plays an important ceremonial role in the nation’s capital, playing for returning veterans and at the inauguration parade. EJ, who credits his time in the Marian Catholic band for shaping his love of band performance, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Valparaiso University, a master’s degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University, and a doctorate from the Catholic University of America.

2019 26 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2018

Asked about his more memorable moments, Paul noted covering visits from United States presidents, popes and other dignitaries, Bulls and White Sox sports championships and celebrations, and many natural disasters. This fall he added another memorable moment to his list when he was a member of the news crew who covered the ABC-7 Friday Flyover at Marian Catholic. And while he had a feeling his alma mater would be named the best Flyover for 2018, the final vote tally gave him official bragging rights at the office! For Paul, the upside of his job is the variety; there are no “typical” workdays. On one of those recent atypical workdays, Paul welcomed students from Marian Catholic’s broadcast club to tour the studios and watch a live taping of Windy City Live. Paul and the students shared more than a common career interest – they shared the pride of being part of the Marian Catholic family.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:

John Everson By Brendan Diamond

2017

1984

John Everson '84 always wanted to be a writer. From his early days working as the editor of the Megaphone at Marian Catholic, he knew that the written word was his calling. “Growing up, everything I read – the stuff that inspired me to become a writer – was science fiction,” he said. “I read a lot of 1950s science fiction books, often two or three times, and that made me want to do what they did.” He wrote many short stories, poems, and song lyrics during this period of his life, which allowed him to express himself creatively and hone his craft. After leaving Marian Catholic, John went on to study Journalism at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This led him to a career in the journalism field. “I began working for The Star Newspapers right out of college,” he said, explaining that he wrote the newspaper’s weekly Pop Stops column about popular music. Though he liked being able to express himself through words, it was the idea of being creative with his writing that stuck with him. After his stint with The Star, he moved on to Illinois Entertainer magazine, where he had the chance to write a little more creatively, for the next four years. However, as often happens, he found himself needing a better job to pay the bills, which led him to publication and website management for a medical association. The idea of being an author, of course, still stayed top of mind for John. In the mid-1990s, he began publishing short stories in magazines such as Gaslight, Eulog y, and Crossroads. These stories bore something in common with the 1950s science fiction he had idolized as a student at Marian Catholic, but always with a darker twist. I was influenced not only by the '50s science fiction, but by TV shows like The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone as well, he said. He found he had a knack for writing horror and soft science fiction, and he even won several awards for his work, including an Honorable Mention in famed writer L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future contest in 1994 for his story “Biological Imperative.” Around the turn of the millennium, John began seriously plotting his first novel. The seed of the idea came from a newspaper article a friend at work had shown him. “She said to me, ‘I know you like dark stuff, so check this out!’” John recalled. “As the story went, there was this bar in England on the top of a cliff where people went to have their ‘last drink’ before jumping off the cliff. That image stuck with me, so I started working on a story.” 2019 28 MARIAN MATTERS WINTER 2018

Kordell Norfleet '17, a wrestler at Arizona State University, participated in his first international meet at the 2018 Junior Pan-American Championships in Fortaleza, Brazil. Kordell had huge success, bringing home a gold medal in the 86 kg Freestyle competition with 4 wins by technical fall. As a freshman at Arizona State, Kordell also won the Pac-12 Championship at 184 lbs. and was named Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.

It didn’t come to him all at once. In fact, John noted, it took him nearly seven years of working on the book on and off before he finally got Covenant into shape for publishing. But since then, the writing has become easier and easier for him. Since publishing Covenant in 2004 and winning the coveted Bram Stoker Award for it the following year, John has published ten novels in total. His latest, The House by the Cemetery, comes out of his own past. “It’s the book of my life!” John laughed. “When I was a cub scout growing up in Tinley Park, we’d go camping in the woods near Bachelors Grove Cemetery. The older kids said it was haunted.” “It wasn’t until I was much older, working as a reporter for The Star, that I actually got to see the cemetery after interviewing a ghost hunter. He told me how to find the place. Then a few years ago, I was asked to write a short story for a cemetery anthology, and as I began writing again about Bachelors Grove, I realized something revolving around the cemetery at Bachelor’s Grove would make a great novel. That’s how The House by the Cemetery came about.” John is wholly thankful for his time at Marian Catholic. One of the main reasons is because his extracurriculars gave him the start he needed in presenting to a crowd. “I learned a lot about carrying yourself publicly by doing drama and speech,” John said. “One of my favorite things to do now is to read fiction aloud for a group, and I think I got the foundation of doing that from Speech class with Ms. Farrell.” He’s also thankful for choir, because it’s where he met his wife, Geralyn ‘Geri’ (Bailey '85) Everson. “That alone makes the whole thing worthwhile,” John noted, with a smile in his voice.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:

Tim Huizenga

It seems Tim Huizenga '03 was destined to be a musician. He began his musical studies taking piano lessons at age seven, adding the French horn at age ten. It was mid-way through his time at Marian Catholic though, that Tim made the decision to pursue music as a career. He began the process of fulfilling his dream by attending the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in music in 2007 and a diploma in horn performance in 2008. While at IU, Tim also served as Principal Horn of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. In 2008, Tim won a position with the United States Army Field Band in Washington D.C., serving with The Musical Ambassadors of the Army for six years. Today, Staff Sergeant Timothy Huizenga is a member of The President’s Own United States Marine Band, America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. This fall, Tim and three other musicians from the Marine Band took time from their busy tour schedule to visit with Marian Catholic band students, sharing both their music and encouragement. Who/What events influenced you the most to pursue a career in music? I was both encouraged and cautioned by many people – my horn teacher, my parents, Mr. Bimm, and others. I knew in the abstract sense, and soon learned firsthand, that music is not a field for the faint of heart – it is very competitive and career opportunities are few, but I loved playing and believed that I had a unique musical voice and that I could succeed if I worked hard and dedicated myself to that goal. Being surrounded by other great musicians at Indiana University and having lots of opportunities to perform were instrumental to my success. Spending the first semester of my junior year in Vienna, Austria was also an especially inspiring and influential experience for me. Was joining The President’s Own always one of your goals? What journey did you take to get there? The President’s Own was always on my radar as a place where I would love to be

2003 if I ever got the chance, but I knew how competitive it was and that it would take a lot of hard work and at least some luck for it to work out. After my time at Indiana University, I took several auditions for orchestras around the country, and had both successes and failures, but learned something valuable from each experience. I made the finals in auditions for the Louisville Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the South Dakota Symphony, but the first major audition I won was for the United States Army Field Band, another premier military band in the Washington, D.C. area. When I auditioned for The Marine Band in 2013, it was the first horn opening that they had had in at least 9 years, so I knew that this was a rare opportunity, and I was fortunate enough to emerge as the winner of that audition. How did your experience at Marian Catholic prepare you for The President’s Own? I always knew that Marian Catholic, and in particular the band program under Mr. Bimm, was a very special place. However, I didn’t necessarily realize until much later just how rare a band program like Marian’s is. The values I learned under Mr. Bimm’s leadership have played a huge role in my success as a professional musician, and I know that I am a better colleague, leader, and musician because of my time there. Regardless of how good of a player you are, you won’t be successful unless you can work well with others (both as a leader and a follower), respect the person on the podium, demonstrate good rehearsal etiquette, etc. – all things I learned at an early age in the band program at Marian. What has been your most memorable moment as a member of The President’s Own? It is very difficult to choose one! I performed on one of the final few White House Holiday receptions of the Obama administration in December 2016. Towards the end of the evening a few of my colleagues and I got to meet the President and First Lady. Others include playing for a Full Honors Arrival Ceremony on the South Lawn of

the White House for Pope Francis in September 2015, and playing in the chamber orchestra for the first State Dinner hosted by President Trump in honor of the President of France earlier this year. In your picture that accompanies your bio on The President’s Own website, you’re wearing several medals. How did you earn them? A few of the medals I wear were awarded while I was a member of the U.S. Army Field Band. These include the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal, which were awarded for various individual contributions I made that went above and beyond my duties as a French horn player. In addition, I also earned the Army Good Conduct Medal (second award), The Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians? My biggest piece of advice would be to listen to great musicians, of all instruments, voices, and genres. Even though I am a horn player, I draw musical inspiration from anyone from Pavarotti to Freddie Mercury, perhaps even more so than any great horn player. I believe if you are capable of being inspired by great musicians then you have the ability to inspire others. Yes, you need to spend lots of time working on the technical aspects of mastering your instrument, but it’s meaningless if you don’t seek to touch and inspire your audience.

2017-2018

Financial Summary A Year to Celebrate!

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends of Marian Catholic High School, What a time it is to be a Spartan! Marian Catholic is in the midst of celebrating 60 years as a pillar of Catholic education in Chicago’s South Suburbs. I recently looked up the symbol for a 60th Anniversary and, to my surprise, discovered it is a diamond! I think this symbol is incredibly appropriate to describe what Marian Catholic has been, and will continue to be, as we look forward to the next 60 years. First, a diamond is strong. This is true for Marian Catholic thanks to our wonderful Dominican Sisters and the many benefactors who have made sure Marian Catholic remains viable financially. Diamonds are also very valuable, much like Marian Catholic is to the many families that choose to give their children an education that is unmatched in the Chicagoland-area. Finally, diamonds do not break under intense pressure, and neither will Marian Catholic, even with the uncertainties facing private education. Marian Catholic continues to balance the realities of the increased costs of maintaining our quality programs with our commitment to nominal tuition increases to best serve our families. In order to overcome this growing challenge, we continue to rely on the generosity of many benefactors who believe in the mission of this school. Each year, we recognize those alumni, families, and friends who have answered our call for financial support. These individuals have made the choice to invest in the future of Catholic education and its long-term survival. On behalf of the Springfield Dominican Sisters, and the students, faculty, and staff of Marian Catholic High School, thank you for your unwavering support of our mission. May this New Year bring you and your family continued blessings and peace. In the Spirit of St. Dominic,

Dan Kozlowski Vice President for Advancement

June 8, 2018 - December 24, 2018

The Future Begins Today In 2014, Marian Catholic, under the leadership of Sister Judine Hilbing, OP, rolled out a five-year strategic plan titled 2020 Vision – Next Generation Leaders. It was an important step in including different constituents to chart our future. Thank you to the seventy-eight people who participated in that process. In the spirit of continuous growth and improvement, and in celebration of the school’s 60th Anniversary this year, we rolled out an updated strategic plan titled Every Student, Every Day. By the end of 2016 I was not sure if the 2014 strategic plan still addressed our ever-changing realities. The only way to attain the answer was to ask questions. In February 2017, a Steering Committee of 15 was formed. Next, we invited alumni, faculty and staff, parents, friends, and students to participate in independent focus groups. Michael Bruni '86, a partner with HUB Philanthropic Solutions, led each group. The groups explored questions regarding Marian Catholic’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. As Mike summarized the information he received from each group, common threads began to emerge. Those threads provided the answer that a refresh of the strategic plan was indeed needed. After numerous drafts and revisions, the Marian Catholic Board of Directors approved the revised plan on January 30, 2018. The plan is bold and it will stretch us. It should. Catholic education looks very different today than it did 60 years ago. We have a responsibility to our families, students, and alumni to boldly and decisively respond to our current realities and plan for the future. Marian Catholic’s new strategic plan is rooted in a preamble, which separates us from public schools: “Forming young men and women in and through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

This profession, combined with our mission statement anchored in the Dominican charism, flows into a powerful vision: “To maximize every student’s potential, every day.” When we accept a student, it becomes our duty to understand the strengths and weaknesses of that child, then assist every student, every day, on their personal spiritual/academic/physical/emotional journey to become the person God intends them to be. The vision and future of Marian Catholic is focused on three priorities: we will fortify our college prep curriculum and student experience, we will ensure our financial sustainability, and we will intensify our engagement with all of our constituents. Every year our Dominican Preachers select a school-wide theme. This year the theme is “Begin.” How appropriate as we remember the impact Marian Catholic had on each one of us as we began adulthood. The theme takes on greater meaning as we begin to chart Marian Catholic’s course for the next sixty years. In the Spirit of St. Dominic,

Vince Krydynski '81 President
