MCHS ALUMNI & FRIENDS GATHERING

FT. MYERS, FL

From the Class of 1964, Pat (Wujcik) McHenry, Bob Westenberg, Barbara (Cowing) Dixon, and Dr. Linda (Gooley) McPheron. The 2011 Marian Catholic High School Hall of Fame Awards Dinner was held on February 17 at Olympia Fields Country Club where a crowd of approximately 300 Marian alumni and friends gathered to honor this year’s awardees: (left to right) Tim Swanson ’86, Athlete of the Year; Sr. Dorothy Marie Solak, O.P., Spirit of Marian; Dr. Adam Brennan ’82, Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement; Michael Bruni ’86, Alumnus of the Year and Michael Goldrick, who was also honored for his 50 years of service to Marian Catholic High School.

The St. Charles Yacht Club, located in a beautiful, secluded natural harbor near the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River in South Fort Myers was the backdrop to the February 22 gathering hosted by Pat and Bill Wiggenhorn, and Pat and Jim Knepler. Host Pat (Macready) Wiggenhorn’63 welcomed guests explaining that she has never had occasion to return to Marian Catholic, but was warmly reminded of her connections upon reading the class of ’63 e-mail reunion postings by classmates chronicling their journeys, then finding her high school friend, Pat (Pignotti) Knepler’63, living just a few miles away in Ft. Myers. For the “Pats,” the gathering was an extension of rekindling their friendship and providing the same for others in proximity to Ft. Myers, Florida. Remembering her neighborhood and family ties that gave her a sense of belonging during her teenage years, Pat Knepler enjoyed bridging her class reunion experiences back in Chicago Heights with her Florida residency by welcoming Sister Judine and guests to visit on behalf of Marian.

MARIAN ANNUAL FUND Phonathon Connects to Thousands, Will Exceed Goal of $60,000!

Having a great time during the Phonathon are parent callers Kathy Brzeszkiewicz, mother of Kyle ’14, and Robbie Ratkovich, mother of Erica ’03, and Shane ’14.

Vivian and Steve Payne, parents of Nick ’09 and Kristen ’11, have been Phonathon volunteers for several years.

Student callers included members of the Women’s Basketball team Britta Hanson ’12, and Uzoma Nwabara ’11.

Over seven days of calling at the end of January, over 200 parent and student volunteers gathered in the MCHS Library to contact alumni, current parents, and alumni parents. The goal of the Marian Annual Fund Phonathon was $60,000; $59,473 was pledged, with over $49,000 collected to date. Coordinated by Marian Fund Director, Peg Massucci, and assisted by the entire Advancement Team, even alumni got in the act by participating in student calling sessions. Cassie DiGiovanni ’06, Peter Kroner ’05, James Murphy ’05, Louise Packard ’06, Caitlin Padula ’04, Steve Tortorello ’04, and Meghan Welsh ’04 provided a lot of added fun for our student callers! It’s been said that “friend-raising” and fun are major factors that make the Marian Catholic Phonathon the ever-popular volunteer phenomena it is each year. “We are inspired by the MCHS community who, even in these economically challenging times, ‘answer the call.’ They are responding to the needs of the school, as well as many being extremely generous with their gifts to help others,” said Massucci. While the Marian Annual Fund impacts all aspects of school life, the following have been targeted as this year’s priorities: • Unrestricted gifts – augment school operations at the discretion of administration and Board • S r. Simeon Fund – offers tuition assistance to families with demonstrated need, disbursed to families throughout the school year • Campus Enhancement – provides funding for ongoing maintenance and updates of campus, building, and technology Those we were unable to reach during the Phonathon still have the opportunity to participate. Gifts are fully tax deductible, can be paid in installments, or charged to a credit card. Online pledges/gifts are also an option: www.marianchs.com “Invest in Marian.”

Pictured with Phonathon Coordinator, Peg Massucci (front), are alumni parents Sue Dawson (left) mother of Katherine ’03 and Amanda ’06 Dawson, Tim (center) and Nancy Hathhorn (right) parents of Vince ’02, Eric ’04, and Kaitlyn ’09 Hathhorn who, after 13 years of co-chairing the Phonathon, have stepped down. They cannot be thanked enough for giving so much of their time to MCHS, including the many years after their students graduated.

Mea Culpa! Three students from the class of 2010 achieved National Merit Finalist status, but were listed as National Merit Semi-Finalists in the 20092010 Marian Catholic Annual Report. Our most sincere apologies go to Sam Kirschenheiter ’10, Jaime Patriarca ’10, Sean Woods ’10, and their families. The Marian Catholic community is very proud of your accomplishments and wishes you success in your college years and beyond. Sam Kirschenheiter ’10

BOARD OF DIRECTORS JANUARY 2011

BEFORE

ENHANCED CENTER AT MARIAN CATHOLIC COMING SOON One of the last priorities of The Courage to Lead Capital Campaign will come to fruition in 2011-2012. Beginning this summer, a redesign of the current computer lab in third hall is planned, with architectural drawings being reviewed, and allocation of “person power” for this aggressive, short time-frame endeavor. Joelyn Carlasare, Director of Technology, explains. “This is an opportunity to enhance the technology resources for our students and faculty,” she said. “By redesigning the space, allowing for future expansion, and incorporating new equipment and software, Marian Catholic will remain on the cutting edge of educational technology.” Some PCs will be relocated to stationary positions in the study hall (formerly the cafeteria) to allow for use by students. The everexpanding number of MACs will be corralled into a MAC-Lab area, where graphic design and video editing can occur in an open, collaborative environment. While the funds from TC2L will help to support media enhancements, additional funding of the Technology/Media Center will be invited through the Marian Annual Fund next year.

Marian Grads Elected to ESCC Hall of Fame Marian Catholic High School alums Rodney Harrison ’91 and Kerri Evans ’96 were inducted to the East Suburban Catholic Conference Hall of Fame at a ceremony held March 10. They join former Marian Catholic inductees Dave Mattio ’66, Mickey Griffin ’93, Kathryn Gleason ’92, Terence Marable ’94, Kevin Kelly ’80 and Jerry Verde ’95. Harrison is well-known for his performance in the National Football League, as a broadcaster with NBC, and was inducted into the Marian Kerri Evans ’96 Catholic Hall of Fame in 2010. (See Fall 2009 issue of Marian Matters for Harrison’s complete bio.) Evans gained selection both as a high school and collegiate softball player, and now as Marian Catholic’s winningest softball coach of all time.

Rodney Harrison ’91

Evans currently owns a 272-92 overall coaching record at Marian, leading the Spartans to six ESCC titles, five regional championships and two IHSA sectional crowns. From her playing days at Marian, Evans still ranks in career top 10 pitching categories for wins (fifth with 34), earned run average (seventh, 1.11), strikeouts (third, 381) and innings pitched (fifth, 338). Evans played collegiately at Bradley University under former Marian Catholic coach and MCHS Hall of Famer Stefanie (Guillen) McAllister ’85, where she still ranks in the top 10 for five career pitching categories and was named a First Team Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete in 2000.

our table. We walked in not knowing anyone, and left feeling that we just had a very nice brunch with old friends.”

Geri (Mytych) Biggs ’63 welcomed South Carolina resident Pete Korn’63 exclaiming, “What a wonderful day!” Meeting up with classmates, Geri thanked the hosts and Marian team for planning the gathering and will “look forward to more of them in the future.”

Moffatt agrees. “The interest to remain connected is gratifying and we invite the alumni, parents and friends in Florida to find your place in support of the Marian Catholic education mission.” Swanson encouraged all the 45 guests “to consider being distance mentors, class liaisons, long-range planning participants, and benefactors supporting the education mission that has benefitted them.” She then presented a framed Alumni Association Logo to each of the hosts.

The energy and ambiance of the gathering was noted by Renee Kennedy-Edwards ’86 who had been out of touch with her Chicago roots and Marian Catholic. She was thrilled to attend the Ft. Myers event noting, “My husband and I had the greatest time meeting fellow alums, sharing stories about our connection to Florida. What a cool idea to get us all together.”

While the camera failed to store pictures of the day, the warmth of the memories will remain for all and perhaps will come again...with another invitation to get together extended, Sister Judine, Carol and Mary can only respond, watch what you wish for!

Facilitated by the Marian Catholic advancement team of Mary Moffatt, Vice President, and Carol (Burke) Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations, the gathering was the latest in ongoing outreach to distant Marian Catholic alumni, parents and friends. The Florida gathering brought a cross section of Marian people together who were glad to be in the company of other parents and alums from almost every decade. Bernie and Sharon VanEtten, parents of eight Marian graduates, and grandparents of two current students, were impressed with the venue and “…everyone we met. It was amazing to find out how many mutual friends we had just among the people at

MCHS HIGHLIGHTS BASKETBALL FENCING WRESTLING Based on the numbers it produced, you would have to think Marian Catholic’s senior class in women’s basketball probably gave 110 percent most of the time. With two of its members contributing on the varsity from day one at the school, the Spartans’ 110 percent in the last four years produced a staggering record of 110-24, much of that thanks to a senior class of Jamie Johnson, Simone Law, Jasmine Matthews, Maryssa Cladis, Uzoma Nwabara and Devin Green. Making its third consecutive appearance in the Class 4A supersectionals this year, Marian won regional, sectional and the Maine West Classic titles. The Spartans also posted their third 30-win season in history with a final 30-5 mark that included the first outright East Suburban Catholic Conference title for any school other than Fenwick since 1993. Four of the senior group will take their talents to the next level in basketball, including Law at Loyola University, Matthews at Bowling Green State, Johnson at Lewis University and Cladis at North Central College. Nwabara is actually a three-sport standout (tennis, soccer) and Green is an all-state water polo player as well. In particular, Law and Matthews had a huge hand in rewriting some of the Marian record books. Key contributors since their freshmen year, the duo made virtually every newspaper All-Area team this year and earned the nod as McDonald’s All-American Team nominees. Law was named Player of the Year by the Illinois Times and SouthtownStar, while Matthews qualified for the Class 4A Three-Point Shootout finals. Wrestling continued to have impressive news on the postseason level, as junior Nate Jackson posted a 3-2 record at the state tournament to earn a fifth-place finish at 152 pounds. For the campaign, Jackson turned in a 29-7 overall record and added an ESCC championship. In men’s basketball, the Spartans notched a 13-17 mark against one of Chicagoland’s most difficult schedules and freshman standout Tyler Ulis was named to the Big Dipper all-tournament team and earned all-East Suburban Catholic Conference recognition. Fencing took a huge step forward this winter, as five athletes earned medals at the Great Lakes Fencing JV Championships, marking the first time Marian had won more than a single medal at the event.

The 2011 Women’s Basketball Sectional Champions are (front) Britta Hanson ’12, Bri Morrison ’14, Jamie Johnson ’11, and Amber Williams ’12. PROFILE IN PHILANTHROPY

Bob and Dolores Jones…

Marian Catholic Servant-Leaders

With local roots in Crete, Bob and Dolores Jones have served and supported the Dominican education mission at Marian Catholic for more than thirty years. Named 2010 Illinois Retailer of the Year, as reported in The Times (October 19, 2010), Bob Jones Jr. has guided his business as it changed, expanded, and became the area’s home recreation superstore, American Sale. A retailer of leisure products and holiday décor, the business got its start when Jones was in his teens working as a barber in his father’s South Chicago shop. From a small store in Roseland, the business expanded to seven Chicagoland and NW Indiana locations, with headquarters in Tinley Park.

Dolores and Bob Jones

As CEO, Bob continues to take an active role in the family-owned enterprise, visiting each of his stores regularly and working the floor during the Christmas holidays. “With my gray hair, people think I’m like the Wal-Mart greeter,” he said. “But I love to be in the store and love to talk with the customers.” Bob’s philosophy is to do 110% for the customers, “Make the customers happy and they will send other customers.” Bob’s customer-centered attitude holds true for Marian Catholic, “where the focus is on the students first, to give them a great education, to teach them to be good, generous people.” “And when this mission is lived and promoted, it just brings new students who want the same experience,” Dolores added. “It’s not just education [at Marian]. Parents have a lot of influence over their children when they are young, until high school, then their social world expands and pulls them in different directions, so much so that it is very important to have God, religion and the spiritual principles of Jesus there for them to study.” Bob and Dolores have approached their philanthropy from a position of gratitude. “The Lord has blessed us and we want to share as much as we can with our parish, diocese, and the community.” From a perspective of Bob’s Marian Catholic Advisory Board leadership in the 1980’s, as parents of three graduates (Mary Ellen ’77, Sandra ’78, and Bob III ’79) and grandparents to another three graduates (Erica ’04, Kaitlin ’06, and Jaclyn ’09) they have remained in touch with the Marian Catholic community. Having been educated by the Dominican Sisters in grade school, Dolores has “tremendous admiration for the Springfield Dominican order, and finds them a dynamic group of women who live out their vowed commitments and model a very fulfilling life.” Bob found the Marian Catholic Dominican leadership willing to listen and stay in the background during his years on the Advisory Board, allowing the lay members to make By active discernment they see where their gifts will have recommendations. the greatest impact. Bob and Dolores have modeled what it means to become Marian Catholic High School’s good Through more than 30 years of gifting the school, and as customers, active consumers, and committed benefactors. leading benefactors to three major capital initiatives, the “listening” partnership seems to have only grown stronger. The philanthropic vision Bob and Dolores share prompted them, about 15 years ago, to become one of the first enrolled in the VERITAS Society by including Marian Catholic in their estate planning because, “it is important for members of the Marian alumni and parent community to consider and set aside an estate gift for the school.” Humbly commenting that the Sisters and staff “intimately know more than we do about what is needed within the school,” the Jones’ continue to defer the direction of their gifts to the decisions of the school’s leaders. As a result, their gifts have touched all the priorities of the capital campaigns, including most recently, The Courage to Lead, which will close with the completion of the broadcasting priority in 2011 as part of the renovation of the technology labs to accommodate an enhanced technology/media center.

Dolores and Bob Jones, Jr. are pictured with their three children Mary Ellen (Jones) Griffin ’77, Bob Jones III ’79, and Sandra Jones ’78.

117174 r3_MCHS MM Newsletter.indd 9

Bob and Dolores Jones model a common profile of philanthropy within our MCHS community: people of modest beginnings with a strong work ethic, a belief in the integrity and possibility of the American dream, and grounded in Catholic-Christian practices applied to their personal and professional lives. When translated to philanthropy, these core values become the imperative to support the well being of others. 9

SISTER MARION SITKIEWITZ, O.P. CELEBRATES 60 YEARS AS SPRINGFIELD DOMINICAN Sister Marion Sitkiewitz, O.P., the Marian Catholic High School archivist and the Forensic Fine Arts Program’s cheerleader was inspired by the Dominican Sisters in the first grade at Our Lady of Grace grade school in Logan Square, Chicago. The Sisters’ life-style of prayer, community, study and preaching the Word of God influenced her then and to this day. Like St. Dominic, the Springfield, IL Dominicans live a life centered in Jesus’ message of God’s love for His Son and all humanity. Sister’s parents did not find the idea of her joining this “unknown” community in Springfield something to celebrate. Sister had no trouble with the vow of poverty because every member of the family contributed their pay check and hers would be missed when she left home in 1949. On April 9, 2011, Sister Marion celebrated sixty years since her profession of vows in January, 1951 with Rev. William O’Mara’s liturgy of Thanksgiving in the School Chapel. After Mass, the celebrating continued with a reception including MCHS Dominicans, Sister’s family and friends. Two degrees and many workshops qualified Sister to teach grade school students for many years until she went on to be a Director of Religious Education in several parishes.

Sister Marion Sitkiewicz, O.P.

In the late 1970’s, Sister left the classroom to ministers as a DRE at St. Lawrence O’Toole, Matteson, IL. Her seven years were filled with new joyous experiences. She went on as a DRE to other parishes in Illinois. In the late 1990’s, Sister Marion, previously known as Sister Peter Claver, returned to East St. Louis. This time, not as a teacher as she did in her young Dominican teaching days, but as Librarian for Sister Thea Bowman, the only Catholic grade school in the city. Seven blessed years later, and always finding the Dominican way of life helping her learn the intimacy of God’s loving presence, Sister Marion was welcomed by the Dominicans and Faculty of MCHS. While helping with hall supervision and department mailings, Sister found the earnest efforts of the Speech students working with coaches Tom Sweeney and Mark Donaway inspiring and exciting. After attending a few tournaments, a delighted Sister Marion was named the “Official Speech Sister,” a title she treasures. Sister is grateful for the simple role she plays in this successful Fine Arts program.

This is the archives before Sister Marion reorganized the contents.

Her second MCHS ministry is the challenge of an organized archives, especially for the Marian Megaphone. Past copies of the Megaphone force the adults at reunions to be “young again” as classmates ready about life as it was at MCHS when they were students.

MOTHERS CLUB FASHION SHOW The 2011 Fashion Show was a huge success, thanks to countless volunteer hours and preparation by committee members. Thanks also to the generous sponsors and donors who supported the show with wonderful raffle prizes. All proceeds go to Marian for educational purposes, ensuring that every student benefits. Plans are underway for next year’s show on March 10, 2012, so there’s plenty of time to get involved.

Sister Dorothy Marie models a bright floral jacket added to her Dominican habit.

There’s always one number in the Fashion Show that wows the crowd. Seniors Carl Sterzel, Danny Jameson, Kyle Rich, Jake Bartolomei, Rich Hodge and Brian Kelly stole the show dancing to a Miley Cyrus song.

Jim Dee ’80 shows he can still strut his stuff with daughter Shannon ’11.

ALUMNI ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACCOLADES Katie Healy ’08 was named to the Desert Stinger AllTournament First Team for her efforts during a four- game tournament in Las Vegas in February. The Lewis University junior outfielder went 11 for 16 posting a .688 batting average. Lewis head softball coach, George DeMatteo said, “Katie had a great weekend batting almost .700 and it’s nice to see the opposing coaches recognize her performance.”

Pictured is Michelle (Flamini) DiBitetto ’92, Theresa (Rocha) Flamini ’70, Dana (Amos) Flamini ’95, and Julie (Katula) Flamini ’90. The Flamini Foundation Reaches Out to Critically Ill Children Picture the 50 or so round tables in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey O.P. Leadership Center filled with every assortment of toys, games, and toiletries, along with ribbons and bags. Then picture the room as 120 people swoop down on the tables to create gift bags for hospitalized children. Theresa (Rocha) Flamini ’70 and Mary (Krumb) Lipari ’67 delivered the gift bags to families of the most critically ill children at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital, and the adjacent Ronald McDonald House, to bring some fun and cheer to children during their hospital stay.

Alex Barone ’07 was chosen as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Division I Player of the Week for helping the St. Xavier University Cougars earn a pair of victories. She also achieved a personal milestone. The last basket in her career high 32 point performance against nationally ranked Cardinal Stritch enabled Barone to reach the 1,000 point plateau for her collegiate career. “My four years at SXU have been nothing short of amazing,” she said. “To play college basketball is an opportunity that was made possible to me through my years playing travel ball and at Marian Catholic. Being a collegiate athlete has kept me focused not only on sports but academics too. My advice to those who are interested in playing college sports…GO FOR IT! It’s worth every minute.”

The Flamini family decided to pool their holiday resources to give to those less fortunate. They organize toy drives and assemble gift baskets for families spending their holiday season at the hospital. “We are truly grateful to all the ladies, volunteers, and donors who helped make this year’s ‘Giving Thanks Event’ at Marian Catholic a huge success,” Theresa said. “Making children who hurt smile is the greatest gift we receive at the holidays.” For more information, contact Theresa at flaminifoundation@ comcast.net or visit www.flaminifoundation.com.

Joseph P. Carlasare ’04, a second-year student at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, won the 19th annual Ilana Diamond Rovner Appellate Advocacy Competition, sponsored by the law school’s Moot Court Honor Society. The competition is named for Chicago-Kent graduate Ilana Diamond Rovner ‘66, judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Students in the Rovner competition each prepare a brief in a case that raises an important issue of national concern, as well as oral arguments supporting both sides of that issue. This year, students argued Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association, a case currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. At issue is whether a state law restricting the sale of violent video games to minors infringes on the First Amendment right to free speech. The top-scoring students advance through a series of elimination rounds.

Joseph P. Carlasare ’04 and Ilana Diamond Rovner

Rovner Competition winner Joseph Carlasare is a member of the Moot Court Honor Society and the Trial Advocacy team. Carlasare was a member of the Chicago-Kent team that won the National Institute for Trial Advocacy’s 2010 Tournament of Champions in October. He also won individual honors as the competition’s best advocate. Last year, Carlasare became the first first-year law student in Chicago-Kent’s history to compete both semesters on the trial advocacy team. He was a member of the 2009 National Pre-trial Advocacy Competition team that advanced to the final round and the 2010 National Ethics Trial team that finished as semifinalists. Carlasare graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy with a minor in economics from Loyola University Chicago.

Nick Hlebasko ’10, a freshman at Indiana State University, is in training for a journey to raise national awareness and empathy for people with disabilities. He has committed to a 4,100 mile bike ride that will take him from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, to the Capitol in Washington, D.C. in approximately 67 days. The “Journey of Hope” occurs this summer. Hlebasko was inspired by Push America (www.pushamerica.org), an organization dedicated to spread the message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities. Teams from 32 different states cycle a combined 12,000 miles in an effort to raise $500,000 annually. Nick is on a team comprised solely of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity members. During the ride, which can average 50 to 100 miles a day, riders meet with local groups who support people with disabilities. Riders participate in wheelchair basketball games, and perform puppet shows to educate children, learning life lessons which will impact them for the rest of their lives. “By generating media attention to these events, we provide communities with hope and awareness,” Nick said. Nick has a personal goal of raising $8,000 with all proceeds going back to Push America.

Providing a lending hand is not confined within the walls of a school. Matt Liberatore ’96 has been volunteering and traveling the world with Habitat for Humanity for five years. He is a volunteer Global Village Leader, with responsibilities including planning, organizing, and executing international humanitarian builds all around the world. His habitat work has taken him to Guatemala, Chile, India, and to Hungary during this past spring break. Matt explains that his ultimate goal is to build six to ten houses on six continents for Habitat for Humanity. “It was the sense of community I learned while attending Marian Catholic that taught me to leave my footprint on a greater scale.” The trip to Hungary is the fourth house on the fourth continent for Matt, a counselor in the Marian Catholic Guidance Department.

Although an aggressive, but achievable goal, Nick says, “While I will miss being home this summer with my family and friends, I will be making new friends; they will be waiting for us in small towns and large cities across this great country.”

During a recent tour of college and high school campuses in the Chicago area, the Salpointe Catholic High School Jazz Band and String Ensemble took time to entertain local patrons at Hackney’s in Palos Park. These talented musicians known as Jazz Tracks, under the direction of John Anzelmo ’67, also performed at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. John served as president of the Marian Catholic High School Band and followed his love of music into the field of music education. With a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music and a Masters from the University of North Texas, John has continued for seventeen years as the Director of Bands and Orchestra at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to his responsibilities as director, John serves as the Chair of the Performing Arts Department, leading others to share his passion for music and the arts.

Remembering SISTER M. GLORIA HANLEY, O.P. May 14, 1918 – March 12, 2011 – Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67 Sister Mary Gloria Hanley knew how to sing, loved to sing - and she sang! She sang a life of joy and goodness and laughter and presence and faith and more laughter. When Sr. Gloria sang, her whole body moved with her spirit and she pulled us along with her simply by being herself. It was a divine and perfect synergy that her feast day was Christmas, for she responded to every day with grace and was, for those of us privileged to know her, the face of Jesus. By far the most magical music Sr. Gloria made was her laughter. Coaches at Marian Catholic would walk out of their way to pass by where she was teaching just to experience the warmth of life which bubbled out of her - the laughter which was like a rolling song filling the space and lifting the heart...and somehow, it was the laughter which students came to remember, the energy of her: going to athletic contests, cheering, laughing, capturing - even well past the age when such energy should be legal - the very essence of what it meant to be alive, loving, free, young. I have no doubt that she is dancing to heavenly music and has already claimed a primo spot in the premiere heavenly choir. But I also believe we will hear her song in a challenge to live unselfishly and be one with her in the countless gracious acts to which God calls us. Her music will lift us like laughter, enfold us, be a grace to us as we hear its echo in our hearts and beg to be lifted into the profound generosity of God’s love which was her song, her “Gloria.”

Class of ’65 Memorial Fund for Tuition Assistance Leave it to members of the Class of 1965 to accomplish two very important things with one simple initiative. They wanted to remember their deceased classmates in a way that would honor them long into the future, and they wanted to do something for Marian Catholic as a class.

Gifts to the Class of 1965 Memorial Fund are fully tax deductible and will be recognized in the Annual Report, listing our deceased classmates. Tuition is currently $8,300, so our pooled gifts will have significant impact to support tuition–imagine the help this would be to families.

Pat (LePenske) Zieske ’65 explains: Like most of us, I credit the Sisters and faculty at Marian Catholic for helping me get started in life. Whether or not one went on to college, we received solid instruction and discipline in an environment that promoted our family values of mutual respect, sacrifice, and hard work to achieve success in whatever path we followed.

The initiative of Pat and her classmates simply reflects the sensitivity of so many alums who, out of their Marian roots and friendships, want to help meet the needs of current families. That’s truly the Spartan spirit in action! For more information contact the Alumni Office at (708) 755-6579 or gift online www.marianchs.com

Establishing the Class of 1965 Memorial Fund becomes an alumni annual giving option. At the discretion of the Marian Catholic President, tuition assistance will be disbursed annually from the total of what has been pledged and collected. Our class gift would be held in The Sr. Simeon Fund for tuition assistance, and be disbursed in the name of the Class of 1965.
