The six individuals selected for the 2016 Marian Catholic High School Hall of Fame come from every walk of life, but they are united in their commitment to the institution that helped shape their lives, the lives of their children and the students they shepherded. These outstanding members of the Marian Catholic community were recognized for their accomplishments at the 2016 Hall of Fame Awards dinner on Thursday, Feb. 4, at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Tom Zarlengo ’80, Alumnus of the Year Dr. Blase Pignotti ’71, Athlete of the Year Ron Centanni, Spirit of Marian Val and Drew Middleton, Spirit of Marian Nancy Mirocha, Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement The Hall of Fame Awards honor alumni, parents, faculty and friends of Marian Catholic who have distinguished themselves in their chosen field and have upheld the Dominican tradition of unselfish service to others. The awards were established in 1994 to commend those graduates and friends of Marian Catholic who have embodied and exemplified the school’s Continues on page 2 mission of “Teaching Scholars with a Soul.”

Band Continues to Thrive, placing 8th overall at BOA Grand Nationals After hard work, determination, and a 36th consecutive Illinois State Class 3A Champion title, the Marian Catholic Marching Band’s season culminated in excellence at the Music For All Bands of America Grand National Championships. Held November 5-7 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana the band brought their show “String Theory” to life. The show this year told the story of marionette puppets, portrayed by members of the color guard, under the control of the marching band. A struggle for power ensues between the two groups, until it ends with the band losing control to the marionettes. The marching band formed a giant marionette on the field with excellent precision, as they reacted against the control of the color guard. The show ended with the drum major being stolen from her podium, as a marionette member of the band took over conducting, and ultimate control of the group. After stunning preliminary and semi-finals performances, the Marian Catholic Marching Band captured the Class AA Grand Champion title, earning the awards for Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance, and Outstanding General Effect in the class.

The band received a spot in the finals competition, marking the 32nd consecutive year of this achievement. The color guard, dressed in beautifully intricate costumes, accompanied by the bands mastery of music from Stravinsky, Rouse, Daughtery, and Dooley brought forth emotion and a spectacular finals performance. The Marian Catholic Marching Band earned a final score of 90.90 and took eighth place overall, continuing to prove they are one of the nation’s greatest marching bands. The band will continue on their path of success as concert season starts in the spring.

Tom Zarlengo ’80 Alumnus of the Year

Zarlengo’s tasty creations have earned the company much media recognition and many awards. Yet despite the local and national accolades Zarlengo’s treats have amassed, nothing is sweeter to the Chicago Heights native than his alma mater and his “best friends,” the Dominican sisters of Marian Catholic. His dedication to both is apparent in his many efforts to beautify and stabilize the area surrounding MCHS. “The sisters are so much fun to be around,” he says. “When you talk to them you are led spiritually immediately. The relationship I have with them just makes me want to be a better person and to keep giving to the community because all the community does is give to me.” In addition to purchasing and renovating run-down properties near the school and his store (plans are in place to buy the long-shuttered gas station next to the shop as the manufacturing end threatens to outgrown its space), Zarlengo frequently supplies Marian Catholic with icy favorites for its various events and fundraisers.

For Tom Zarlengo ’80, success literally is sweet. Zarlengo, the 2016 Marian Catholic High School Alumnus of the Year, owns one of the most successful ice cream companies in the Chicago area, Zarlengo’s Italian Ice and Gelato, which was named in the top 10 frozen dessert retailers in America by Dessert Professional magazine. Started in the small shop on Joe Orr Road where every product still is made by hand – and where long-time customers and new fans eagerly await the store’s warm-weather opening to line up for the popular gelato, Italian ice and soft serve confections – the company that Zarlengo created in 1983 and runs with his family has expanded tremendously. Zarlengo’s products are featured in numerous upscale Chicago eateries such as Tavern on Rush and Au Cheval, at U.S. Cellular Field and Ravinia Music Festival, and are widely distributed by Sysco Foods, “the nation’s largest food distributor,” he notes. They also are a mainstay of Andy’s Frozen Custard, a chain with locations in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and suburban Chicago producing for them 400,000 to 500,000 under their private label as well as Italian ices under the Zarlengo name. He gives much of the credit for Zarlengo’s success to his wife Mary Lou; children Tommy, Todd and Alison; parents John and Sally Zarlengo; and his dedicated employees, many of whom are or were Marian Catholic students. “The business began with a dream my father had to open an ice cream shop,” he says. “With it, we began a journey that no one could predict, a business that is hopefully an asset to the community and one that, even with all of our growth, still remains the heartbeat of our efforts.” Son Todd ’04, the company’s vice president, pitched the idea of getting their treats out to White Sox fans. “U.S. Cellular was a dream come true for Todd,” Zarlengo says. “When he contacted them, they were actually looking for a product like ours, a little something old-fashioned for the fans.” Tommy ’02, a chef, handles much of the company’s sales to restaurants and other venues. “He represents us at events and for Sysco foods” as well, Zarlengo says. Daughter Alison ’92, with four children of her own, also works “tirelessly” in the company, making sure the shop and its orders and deliveries run smoothly, he adds.

Besides enhancing the community, Zarlengo is instrumental in making an impact in the lives of Marian students, says Sr. Santina DeLuca ’62. “He employs many young people,” she says. “He gives them a start in learning to save their money and set goals for themselves. That is a blessing for them as individuals and for us as a community.” Despite his hectic schedule, Zarlengo says in his spare time he “enjoys baking bread and having homemade pizza parties for our wonderful grandchildren: Niya, Michelina, Nino, Sammy, Gia and Amelia.” Surprised to have been selected Alumnus of the Year, Zarlengo says he is dedicating the award to his best friend Eddie Ziltz ’80, an ardent “Marian Catholic supporter and fundraiser” who died suddenly in 2011. “Eddie would totally deserve this award before me,” Zarlengo says. “I feel like I am accepting it for him.”

Ron Centanni

Dr. Blasé Pignotti ’71

Spirit of Marian

Athlete of the Year

In his 29 years at Marian Catholic High School, many things stood out for Ron Centanni, but none so much as the Kairos program. As one of the adult leaders in the program, Centanni, an MCHS guidance counselor who retired in 2010, says he was impressed by the way it affected the students and made them more attuned to their religion. “The Kairos program really instilled a huge amount of faith in some kids,” he says. “I saw them go from having very little faith to a tremendous amount in just three days. It was extremely inspiring.” A 2016 Spirit of Marian award winner, Centanni says the program also enabled him to strengthen and grow in his own faith. “It was really eye opening, and the No. 1 thing that kept me at Marian Catholic for all those years,” he says. In addition to the Kairos program, Centanni also has fond memories of coaching baseball. “I was the first freshman baseball coach at Marian Catholic, then I moved up to sophomore, then varsity,” he says. “I love baseball, and I enjoyed being out there and coaching the games and seeing the kids do well.” Centanni holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in counseling and educational psychology from Southern Illinois University. He also was an Air Force officer who served four years of active duty and 17 years in the reserves before retiring as a major in 1988. His experience in the military made him an invaluable resource for John “Pete” Ladowicz ’95 when he was preparing to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. “It’s a rather lengthy process to get into the academy and Ron walked me through it for the better part of a year and a half,” says Ladowicz, now a commander in the Naval reserves who as a civilian works in legislative affairs for Homeland Security. “He understood what it took to get in and, more importantly, what it took to succeed.” Centanni, Ladowicz says, has a “special gift in that he is able to recognize real potential in students and help them realize that potential. ...Not many folks are blessed with that gift, and there are even fewer who want to showcase it by working with students.” In retirement, Centanni still keeps a full schedule: He is an avid traveler who has been to all seven continents, toured 65 countries and visited every state with the exception of South Carolina and North Dakota. A long-time resident of Tinley Park, Centanni is very active in his community – he even has a park named for him – and has hosted and produced a local cable show in the suburb for more than 25 years. An adept photographer, Centanni shoots with the Foresters Camera club, and his photos frequently appear in a community newspaper, The Tinley Junction. He also is an amateur magician and belongs to the Magic Masters club, where he learns the art of illusion from other club members, a good number of whom are professional magicians, he says.

Although Dr. Blase Pignotti ’71 came away from Marian Catholic High School with a firm understanding of the expression “you can’t win them all,” the St. Louis-based obstetrician-gynecologist is delighted with one he did win: The 2016 MCHS Athlete of the Year award. Pignotti, who was Marian Catholic’s first four-year varsity basketball player, credits his high school athletic career and his coaches with instilling in him valuable life lessons: “I probably learned more from some losses than I did from the victories. We don’t win everything but we persevere through it all. You still have to get up and try your best the next day.” And persevere he did: Pignotti’s MCHS stats include No. 5 career scoring with 1,083 points and No. 1 career rebounding with 917 rebounds. Additionally, he was No. 1 and No. 5 in season rebounding. “I don’t know too many Marian Catholic athletes who played varsity as freshmen – and for four years,” says former long-time Marian Catholic dean and teacher Mike Goldrick, who was the assistant basketball coach during Pignotti’s high school career. “In addition to being a great competitor and leader, Blase had a number of qualities you would want in an athlete,” Goldrick says. “He had great character. He was unselfish in terms of his teammates and he was academically excellent. There never was a question of him being ineligible or missing a game for not studying or anything like that.” Pignotti, a Chicago Heights native, did not continue with athletics in college, although he easily could have. He chose instead to concentrate on academics in his quest to become a physician, a career choice facilitated by his Marian Catholic education. “Marian Catholic prepared me academically to go forward in learning how to learn,” he says. “In medical school the amount of information is just tremendous, so either you study or you don’t make it. Marian Catholic definitely helped me with that, and gave me a good basis for the sciences and math that I needed in college” at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Marian Catholic’s commitment to service also had a big impact on Pignotti, who graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1982 and is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. An independent physician, Pignotti has the freedom to treat patients regardless of their means or ability to pay for his services. “Most physicians now work for a hospital or for somebody else,” he says. “I don’t. I work for myself and for my patients. I take care of who I want to take care of and who I think needs my help. Serving my patients is what my whole life is about.” He is free to recommend to his patients what is best for them and not what is best for some corporation. Goldrick is completely unsurprised by this: “Blase was not just a player, he was a true leader. He is the embodiment of Marian Catholic’s motto, Scholars with a Soul.” Pignotti and his wife Judy Fagan Pignotti ’71 have five children and four grandchildren. His family is most important to him. Three years ago he was joined in his practice by his physician daughter Laura. 3

Nancy Mirocha

Val and Drew Middleton

Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement

Spirit of Marian

One might expect the first lay person ever hired to conduct the Marian Catholic High School choirs to feel some pressure at the undertaking. But for Nancy Mirocha, the 2016 MCHS Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement Award winner, it was like following in the footsteps of friends. “I never felt I had to meet certain expectations,” says Mirocha, who was a voice and piano teacher at Marian Catholic before taking over the choral program. “The sisters that were there previous to me were good friends. Everyone was very helpful, so I never felt like I was stepping into foreign territory.” Mirocha, who served for several years as the Fine Arts Department Chair before her retirement in 2002, also was responsible for the Marian Catholic musicals, a role she thoroughly embraced. “Musicals are a lot of work,” she says. “Each have their own little dynamic. You’ll think you have it all figured out, then the next year you’ll do another musical and it will be a completely different dynamic. “But I really enjoyed the teamwork. I had some very talented people to brainstorm with and it was wonderful to have such a cooperative working environment. Directors, choreographers, musicians, technical people – it always amazed me at the creativity everyone brought to the table.” One such production was “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which Charlie Misovye ’78 remembers fondly. Misovye, director, producer and group sales coordinator for the Theatre at the Center, Inc. in Munster, Ind., worked with Mirocha on the production. “Nancy always was looking for innovative ways to give the students a vast experience and a variety of musical styles and performance outlets,” he says. “Of course ‘Joseph’ is the story of 11 brothers, so that gave the boys the opportunity to perform and get involved with the choral program.” One of the choirs Mirocha led was the Marian Catholic singers, a performance- based group similar to a show choir that she took to various venues and events “so they got more experience in the outside community.” “Our focus was a 30- to 40-minute program of singing and dancing,” she notes. “We usually did two styles of programs throughout the year, the Christmas show being the big one with a more religious emphasis and the spring show featuring pop music. Mirocha, who is “big on goal setting,” says she found it very rewarding to see the students “working really hard to make sure that they did achieve their goals.” “I would be most excited about seeing them get excited about wanting to achieve. Not just sloughing it off, but doing ‘A’ work as opposed to doing ‘B’-minus work.” Mirocha was very prepared and committed to her students, Misovye says: “Nancy always was on the side of the students, always was there to listen and to work with them in regard to their needs and furthering their education in the fine arts through music and theater.” Since leaving Marian Catholic, Mirocha, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and a master’s degree from Governor’s State University, has taken over the music program at her church, Immanuel Lutheran in Mokena, where she resides with her husband John. The couple has two children, Nathan ’92 and Nichole ’95, and two grandchildren.

Shivering in the stands while their children battle it out during a bitter cold fall football game or early spring lacrosse match, Marian Catholic parents have one woman to thank for that steaming cup of coffee warming their frozen fingers: concession stand coordinator Val Middleton. Middleton, who shares the 2016 Spirit of Marian award with her husband Drew, was instrumental in extending the stand’s operation to include many of the school’s sporting events. “I think what my wife felt is that these kids are entitled to refreshments. Their parents too, because they are there supporting their children,” explains Drew, a substitute teacher and college basketball official. “Over the years, Val has expanded the stand and made it into something that people look forward to.” As coordinator, Val shops for the food and beverages the stand sells, stocks the items, organizes the schedules and works the counter. And while her volunteering is in itself admirable, the fact that she has been doing it well after the last of her four children graduated in 2007 and while facing a serious illness makes her efforts inspirational. “I just enjoy being around the school and being around the kids and the faculty,” Val says. “It’s uplifting. It’s just a fun place to be.” Drew, who also has spent many a volunteer hour at Marian Catholic, says they feel compelled to give back because the school has been the “foundation for everything” in the lives of their sons. “We were so blessed to be able to send four boys to college on athletic scholarships,” he notes, adding that Erick and Derrick played college football while Roderick and Cedrick played basketball. The Middletons, of University Park, credit the Marian Catholic coaches with having a huge, positive impact on their children. “I felt very comfortable knowing that my boys were being guided by Christian men,” Drew says. “I have been around a lot of coaches and I know what some of their vocabulary is like. I was just thankful that the Marian Catholic coaches were always uplifting. The boys enjoyed sports so much because they never felt the coach was browbeating them.” The Middletons agree they are “humbled” to be selected for the spirit award. “Our kids did a tremendous amount of work in the classroom. We are so proud of them and we are accepting it for them, because they were the ones who really did all the work,” Drew says. “It’s a very nice honor to have someone recognize you for doing something that you enjoy doing,” Val adds. Jim Dee ’80, a Chicago Heights resident who serves as treasurer for the town, has known the family for more than 20 years and says the Middletons truly embody the Spirit of Marian. “It’s one thing to get involved when your children are going through school, but they both have continued to volunteer well beyond that time, which says that it means more to them than just watching out for their own kids,” he says. “They always are engaging with the students, they are not just showing up. They are actually interested in the new kids that are there each year.” 4

BECKY’S WARRIORS

and Marian Catholic Team Up to Help with the Fight Against Cancer Becky’s Warriors is a 501(c)(3) organization that was created to honor the memory of Becky Eaton Lopez ’95 by inspiring hope and courage to Marian Catholic families who are fighting cancer. Becky Eaton Lopez attended grade school at Infant Jesus of Prague in Flossmoor, IL, and then MCHS from 1991-1995. She then attended Illinois State University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Special Education. She worked full time, dedicating her time and talents to helping young children in need. Becky married Ken Lopez in 2010 and in August of 2011, Drew Preston was born to Becky and Ken. Shortly thereafter, in January 2012, Becky was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Her cancer had spread throughout her body by the time she was diagnosed. By June 2012, the cancer had spread to her brain. Becky continued working and living life to the fullest while undergoing intense chemotherapy, radiation and many procedures and hospitalizations. After a fierce battle, Becky was called to eternal rest on April 23, 2014. Joe Flores ’94 Co-Director of Becky’s Warriors stated, “In honor of Becky, our mission is to help those in financial need who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis and has a tie to Marian Catholic. This could be a current student and/or their immediate family, a Marian Catholic alumnus, or faculty member.” Members of Becky’s Warriors are excited about the future partnership between Becky’s Warriors and Marian Catholic High School. Team members give great thanks to Sister Judine, President, Steve Tortorello ’04, Principal, Vince Krydynski ’81, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Carol (Burke) Swanson ’81, Director of Alumni Relations, Dave Mattio ’66, Athletic Director,

and Jen Clifford ’88, Women’s Dean, for their support of their organization. “Our time at Marian Catholic was special and we are blessed to partner with Ken Lopez, Drew Lopez, and Sue Eaton a highly-acclaimed, Catholic, college-preparatory high school,” said Chuck Hicks ’94, Co-Director of Becky’s Warriors. In their continued effort to inflate the organization and help others battle this disease, Becky’s Warriors will honor a recipient every year to help financial need. “Becky’s Warriors changed my life. Because of the gift and honor I received, every day forward will be better,” stated Julie Ann Villa ’92. The Golf Outing, which was the first event and a huge success, was held in June of 2014, only a few months after Becky’s passing. Since that event, Becky’s Warriors has grown into a government-recognized not-for-profit organization. After such an accomplishment in the inaugural year, Becky’s Warriors decided to make the outing a tradition. Team members are in the process of expanding with new events to raise more funds. Becky’s Warriors is planning their third Outing and first Becky’s Warriors 5K Run and Walk in the fall of 2016.

67 STUDENTS AWARDED “M”

for Achieving a GPA of 4.0 or Higher in Consecutive Semesters Marian Catholic High School awarded 67 Academic Letters to sophomores, juniors, seniors and 2015 grads at the annual Academic Letter Breakfast on October 27. The Academic Letter is awarded to a student who receives 4.0 or higher grade-point average in two consecutive semesters. “It is with great pride that we recognize these gifted students who have earned a grade point average of 4.0 and above for two consecutive semesters,” said Dr. Shirley Morris, Assistant Principal of Academics. “Each student has shown the drive and dedication to perform at the highest academic level. These students have benefited from the numerous learning opportunities extended to them.” Presented each fall, the six-inch “M” Letters have been awarded to more than 1,375 students since the program began in 1994.

Josh ’16 and Ashley ’18 David’s Pilgrimage to See Pope Francis In 1995, Joe and Laura David visited Joe’s grandmother in Norwalk, CT. It was then that they missed out on the opportunity to see John Paul II the Great say Mass at The Aqueduct in Norwalk. Joe went on to say, “I have regretted not going ever since. Once I heard Pope Francis was coming to the United States, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to go on a pilgrimage to see him as a family before the kids leave the nest for college.” The David’s did just that. Josh ’16 and Ashley ’18 David experienced the time of their lives as they set out for Philadelphia on September 22, 2015. “This pilgrimage was one of the most memorable and spiritual moments of my entire life,” Josh said with joy. “I mean, we got to see the Pope! A lot of people can’t say they have done that.” Pope Francis was radiating, his presence was felt in Philadelphia as soon as he touched down in Washington D.C.

The love of God was in everyone; faith was just pouring out of every corner of Philadelphia. This experience was not only enjoyable, but also brought Josh and Ashley closer to God. After much planning and preparation to encounter Pope Francis, the David’s got lucky. They were fortunate to come within 10 feet of the Pope during the parade. The following morning they were among 1,000,000 people who received communion at a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis.

While in Philadelphia, Josh and Ashley experienced enjoyable activities at the World Meeting of Families, including presentations covering family protections and the values of Catholic faith. However, the Catholic Relief Service activity topped the list. Along with 250 others, the David’s prepared nearly 40,000 meals in one hour, yes...an hour! All of these involvements made this pilgrimage memorable for the David family.

MCHS ATHLETICS Women’s Volleyball

ALUMNI

BOWLERS

In many respects, it was considered a rebuilding season for the Marian Catholic women’s volleyball team this fall. With youth throughout the lineup, the Spartans turned in solid early-season finishes in the Plainfield North and McAuley Preview Invitationals. However, this group soon made it clear that it was not playing for the future. “We had a good, hard-working team right from the beginning,” according to fifth-year coach Ryan Summers. “The culture on the MCHS volleyball team is starting to train younger players what it takes to have a winning program. An example is how well attended our optional day at the Sand Dunes was. It turns into a two-hour trek run/jog/hike up and down sand dunes and is growing in attendance year after year.” “We lost some close ones early and had a few learning experiences, but through all of the challenges, we kept improving and out-improving our peers. Come time for the state tournament we were one of the top teams around. Peaking at the right time and the progress throughout the season led to a regional title (and the fourth winning season in five years).” Indeed, led by East Suburban Catholic all-conference standout freshman Temi Thomas, Marian Catholic’s volleyball squad saved some of its best for last. The Spartans won nine of their last 12 matches and captured second place in the Lincoln-Way Central Invite. Postseason victories over Plainfield South and Lincoln-Way East produced an IHSA regional championship and eventual 21-16 final record.

ABOVE: Members of the women’s

volleyball team huddle up in route to an IHSA Regional Championship RIGHT (l to r): Emma Fleming ’16; Senior Casey Domke - 2A IHSA State qualifier

“We play in what almost everyone considers the number one conference in the state, so having a slow conference start didn’t really seem to faze us,” Summers explained. “We pushed some really good teams, playing teams tight and taking some to three games that were perennial state contenders.” Indeed, the ESCC proved its strength when all eight teams in the league earned IHSA regional titles.

Did you know the alumni have a bowling team that meets for 10 weeks on Sundays at Lakewood Bowl in Richton Park? All you have to do is show up and you bowl with Marian Catholic’s Bowling Club, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. You do however, participate in Beat the Alumni, where the kids, if they beat your scores, win a blow pop (so exciting). Questions? Contact Sue Silander, ssilander@marianchs.com, or visit the Bowling Club’s web page at www.marianchs.com under students, clubs and organizations. We start January 10th and hope to see ya “On the Lanes.”

“We are graduating some talent, but we are returning more,” Summers said. “We had one freshman and two sophomores on varsity in the starting rotation, so that bodes real well for the future. We also have talented kids and a strong staff on the freshman and sophomore teams, so we’re looking to fill in a few holes and have a great season next year. Success is a habit, a habit that is in the process of becoming a tradition, and tradition doesn’t graduate.” Marian Catholic had additional success on the IHSA state level during a successful fall campaign.

Men’s Golf

In men’s golf, senior Casey Domke turned in a 68th-place finish in the IHSA Class 2A state tournament.

Women’s Cross County

Junior Kelly Mindak made the state grade in women’s cross country, earning a 113th-place finish in the IHSA Class 2A state meet in Peoria.

ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC

CONTINUES TO BE A SUCCESS Once again, the 26th annual Endowment Golf Classic was a splendid day. On September 14, 2015 over 200 golfers and friends gathered at Olympia Fields Country Club to take part in this year’s Endowment Gold Classic. With weather that would fit a golfer’s dream, followed by a wonderful evening filled with gifts, a variety of attractive silent auction items and a pleasant dinner, the entire day could not have been better!

For the 26th year the EGC has continued to grow as the schools largest fundraiser. Once again co-chaired by Greg Underwood, Flossmoor, IL, and Mark Peifer, Munster, IN, and the 23 member committee, the EGC was an enormous success. Marian Catholic would like to send a very special thank you to all of the sponsors, donors, committee members and participants in this year’s event, the day could not have taken place without each of these individuals.

MOVING FORWARD STANDING STRONG

2015-2016 MARIAN FUND The Unrestricted Fund supports Marian Catholic academics, athletes, and artists. A gift to this fund helps Marian Catholic maintain its high standards held throughout its history, while providing opportunities for our students to move forward and excel. While academics advance, we stand strong in providing the same great education we have for 57 years. With over 40 honor and Advancement Placement classes, students are prepared for a lifetime of achievements. The Unrestricted Fund helps provide superior educational opportunities for students, and faith development, which continue to be the backbone of Marian Catholic. A gift to the Unrestricted Fund will support our facilities that keep our athletes moving forward. A visit from Super Bowl Champion Michael Prior ’81 reminds us of the strong foundation that Marian Catholic athletics maintain. Brett Lilek ’12 continued moving forward after this success on the Marian Catholic baseball team, and was drafted by the Miami Marlins. Tyler Ulis ’14 continues his progression of excellence on the court at The University of Kentucky and their notable basketball team.

The Unrestricted Fund flourishes creativity in the artists at Marian Catholic. The Theater and Choir Departments continue to produce exciting shows and concerts on the stage that is maintained by this fund. Tanya Baker ’05 continued her love of the arts by pursuing a career in the Culinary Arts and being honored as a James Beard Award nominee. The Unrestricted Fund provides resources to the arts that provide a strong background of accomplishments. The accomplishments of tomorrow’s alumni will be rooted in the solid foundation they receive at Marian Catholic, and continue to move forward in the Marian Catholic tradition. Your gift is the foundation for the future. 2015 FALL PLAY

Over the Tavern On October 16th and 17th Marian Catholic’s Monsignor Croarkin Auditorium held a large audience to watch the astonishing act of “Over the Tavern” put on by the Marian Catholic Fine Arts Department. The remarkable show this past fall was a huge success! It is a story of the Pazinski’s, who were a struggling working-class family. Chet and Ellen raise their four teenagers, each questioning family values in their own mischievous ways. With a setting in the late 1950’s, members of the Fine Arts Department prepared a routine to exemplify the Pazinski’s to perfection! “Year in and year out the kids put on great performances, this year was a huge success. The students put a lot of hard work into this show,” said Mark Donaway, Theater Director. The outcome was a hilarious yet touching comedy that looks at the process of growing up, family and God.

SAVE THE DATES The entrance to the new (West) gymnasium, located on the Joe Orr Road side of the campus, is paved with individually inscribed bricks. An already popular idea, commemorative bricks are a timeless way to honor Marian Catholic families, graduates, parents, faculty members, and friends. Physically, it is an inviting walkway, enjoyed by everyone, leading to our new gymnasium. Symbolically, it bridges alumni, parents, and friends to future generations of the Marian Catholic High School family. Each year’s bricks will be in the walkway by mid-May. The Buy-a-Brick Program allows everyone an opportunity to participate at one low cost of $100. ($75 is tax deductible) Each brick investor will be acknowledged for sustaining the proud legacy and tradition of strong community support at Marian Catholic. Bricks will continue to be available and added to the walkway at regular intervals. Future orders will be processed throughout the year(s) and installed annually. CLASS REUNIONS REUNION WEEKEND CLASS OF 1965

1965 • 1970 • 1975 1980 • 1985 • 1990 1995 • 2005 • 2010

Many friends and classmates came together in late October to celebrate their 50 year reunion. The event consisted of 50 class members who came together, shared old memories and visited the place they called home for four years. To kick the weekend off, the class of 1965 gathered in the Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P., Leadership Center for a reception following the Homecoming football game on Friday night. It was here, where old friends had the opportunity to take a look at the updates around campus and catch up with one another. While Marian Catholic’s facilities have evolved over the years, the memories and life experiences alumni gained during their high school years still remain. On Saturday, a reunion mass was held in the MCHS Student Chapel in memory of deceased classmates. A very special moment for all, as each of the classmates who are no longer with us were remembered. After mass concluded members of the 1965 class made their way down the road to Olympia Fields Country Club for a celebration dinner.
